Some IP's (in a range that is blocked) warned me on my Talk page about a user that allegedly was previously "lying" and "discrediting" other users. The user that was under question, removed the info from my talk page. But I presume that it is my talk page and no one else is removing text. While I do not support what the IP's wrote (meaning, that I did not even considered it interesting enough to start an inquiry) I consider it as just a point of view. But the user that is bespoken of, argues it is a personal attack and requests me coercively to remove the text. I would like to know whether someone is free to remove personal attack from other's Talk page. And whether I need to give in to the request. Or what other road would be best to follow. I do not like to hear bad talk about other users, but I can imagine cases where it is desirable that users inform about other users. And I like to retain a level of freedom of speech as well. I would like to hear some advises on this one. Kind regards, Timelezz (talk) 21:26, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

No user names recognized

We created an account, but when we try to login, wikipedia is not recognizing any of the user names we think we used. What do we do now? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.112.63.19 (talk) 01:16, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you created your account recently, you could try looking for your username in the user creation log. If you manage to find your username, you can then try to login, or reset your password if needed. Anon126 (talk - contribs) 01:31, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If it was longer ago and you have an idea what the name started with then you can try Special:Listusers. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:15, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As far as your use of the word "we"... Wikipedia accounts are supposed to be for one person and not a group of people. If multiple people are to be editing something, then each should have their own account. Dismas|(talk) 02:35, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

NM owner changing history for their own profit

Hello I was astounded to come across a webpage for NM church claiming "oldest in america", and came here to see if history has changed. Anyone with an education knows St. Augustines Florida is 1565 Your page says that, but they have been completely REMOVED from oldest list, replaced by the NM one built 1610 (if theyre lucky)!

I'm not here to fool around making accounts doing your work for you nor do i have time -- Im showing you how your system of editing allows for this tourism owner to make your site look silly, and profit off it. Because Oldest in America is a major fact, and theyre changing it...may as well say America and Mexico are now part of USA. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.139.36.188 (talk) 02:52, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I can't help with the issue at present, but "[our] work for [us]" is the job of everyone with accounts and without, because Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and pretty much everyone is a volunteer who just decided to sign up for an account. Some are even IP addresses like your own, and if the article is not protected, you can make the change yourself. - Purplewowies (talk) 03:27, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia has millions of articles and is written by volunteers around the World. The content you refer to may have no involvement from the people you accuse. You didn't name any of the articles you refer to but after searching I guess you refer to San Miguel Mission in New Mexico, Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine in Florida, and List of the oldest churches in the United States. The current St. Augustine church was apparently built 1793–1797, and the original church doesn't seem to satisfy the list requirement to still be standing or have a continuous congregation. List of the oldest churches in the United States#Florida says: "Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine. Originally established September 8, 1565. Abandoned in 1763, but re-built in 1793." Change of picture

My friend Adah Sharma is an Indian actress and has been trying to change her profile picture in the Wikipedia page but unable to do so. help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.97.232.174 (talk) 08:10, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If the copyright holder of the new picture (which may be the photographer or agency rather than herself) is willing to license the picture so that anybody may use it for any purpose, including commercially, then they can upload it to Wikimedia commons using the procedure in Donating copyright materials, and then the new picture can be used in the article. If they are not willing to license it in that way, then the picture cannot be used in Wikipedia. On a related subject, while updating the picture with a properly licensed one would be welcome, both you and she should be very cautious about editing that article, as you have a conflict of interest. --ColinFine (talk) 09:37, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On how to use the help desk

I submitted a question (Feb 19) that has now supposedly been archived some six or seven hours ago (though the archive file apparently does not exist). It got there without any response or acknowledgement. How should I interpret the silence? Evensteven (talk) 08:27, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Probably that there isn't a preference, you cite the source you actually used - See WP:SAYWHEREYOUGOTIT. -- Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:02, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. That one covers my original question. Evensteven (talk) 17:16, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Below the box at top is a link on "Archived discussions" and "Search the help desk archives". It goes to Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives which currently links to Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2014 February 19 where your question has no replies. If the link was red when you posted then the page needed a purge to display the link as blue. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:24, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And thanks. I didn't know about purging, and a refresh hadn't fixed the red link I got earlier. Evensteven (talk) 17:16, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Incorporating information from a different language's Wikipedia on the English Wikipedia

There is fairly significant information about a living person on the Japanese Wikipedia, which appears to be properly referenced there, that is missing from the English Wikipedia. I think it would be helpful to include this information on the English Wikipedia, but all relevant sources appear to be in Japanese. Do I need to read the sources myself to verify them myself, or is the fact that it was referenced on the other Wikipedia sufficient? --Beneficii (talk) 08:29, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is still using a Wiki, with public editing, to support an article. You will have to find other sources or, as you say, refer to the original ones. Britmax (talk) 08:37, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There is a page for requesting help with sources you can't access/read - unfortunately I can't find it right now. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:09, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
What article is this about?
If you want to mention the article on the Japanese language Wikipedia you can simply paste its URL. For example, Hajime Toyoshima: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E4%B8%80
or you can use the format :ja:https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%B1%8A%E5%B3%B6%E4%B8%80 (which comes out as ja:https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/豊島一).
You can always ask for help with translations at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language.
Does this help? Pete aka --Shirt58 (talk) 09:20, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You're thinking of ja:豊島一. Also, there's this template Template:Expand Japanese. If you cannot read Japanese, you could ask for help in some of the places listed if this is something you'd like to do yourself. - Purplewowies (talk) 09:39, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Here: [1]. I would likely be able to understand the Japanese source well enough to be able to verify that fact, but it costs money. What should I do? --Beneficii (talk) 14:56, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You need to be very careful about reliable sources as there are WP:BLP issues involved. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 15:19, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's reliable enough for the Japanese Wikipedia, and I imagine they are at least as strict as we are (if not stricter) about BLP issues, because defamation laws are tougher there. (And in fact, the Japanese Wikipedia would steadfastly refuse to publish the perpetrator's name, and in fact the Japanese Wikipedia had a bot that would remove any linked source mentioning her name, including interwiki links, a fact that encouraged editors here on the English Wikipedia not to use her name.) That statement in question has been on the Japanese article for quite a while. The book in question is published by Kodansha, a major Japanese publisher, so it is published by a reliable third-party source. --Beneficii (talk) 20:12, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Beneficii, what you "imagine" about the Japanese Wikipedia is not relevant unless you can show some actual evidence. They are in any case not subject to Japanese defamation or any other laws as the servers that host all Wikipedias are in Florida. The only laws that are actually relevant are Florida state and US federal laws. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 22:03, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The Wikipedias are so separate that each cannot even trust others' verifications of sources, when they are all under U.S. law anyway? --Beneficii (talk) 22:22, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The law is only relevant to copyright and slander - other than that, article content is subject only to the internal policies and rules of each Wikipedia - separately. That's basically why content from another Wikipedia cannot be trusted at face-value, the sources must always be checked. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 07:19, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You may be able to ask at WP:RX about accessing the source and perhaps even translation help, if it's not something you can easily get ahold of. - Purplewowies (talk) 21:51, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. --Beneficii (talk) 22:22, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

adding a photo to an existing profile of a person listed on Wikipedia

I have successfully uploaded a Jpeg photograph of Sol M. Wurtzel, and would like to know how to get the photo to appear on the biographical page — Preceding unsigned comment added by RexRexRex (talkcontribs) 09:05, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are you using the filename exactly as you entered it, capitals and all? it is File:SOL M WURTZEL.jpg --ColinFine (talk) 09:47, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You can for example add to the article. See more at Wikipedia:Picture tutorial. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:13, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I will note that the licensing of the image appears dubious. Given that he was born in 1890 and the image of him is of a fairly young age, it strikes me as very unlikely that you as the uploader were also the creator of that image. It may be that the image is now out of copyright protection and thus with the correct licensing is proper to post on Wikimedia Commons. Or if you have inherited or otherwise obtained the copy right from the original holder and wish to release it under a free use licensing, you can verify that through the WP:OTRS and you can also post it on Commons. Otherwise, since the subject is dead, you can post it on Wikipedia with appropriate licensing and a WP:FAIRuse claim. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 14:58, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing errors on Prime Minister of Ukraine

Reference help requested. I am unsure what a reference block is and how to resolve this - can someone help? Thanks, Dn9ahx (talk) 11:17, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Dn9ahx. The first reference you altered was given a name (60dcsag) so that the same reference could be used later in the article. You changed the reference, and so there is not now a defined reference with that name. You need to find the place in the article where reference 60dsag was reused, and move the definition (the interfax link) to that reference, so that that later reference will be properly defined. --ColinFine (talk) 11:43, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

My Article : Sudha Jain (abusive/misleading/malafide edits)

I wish to report malafide edits to my article by a couple of users and would like to draw your attention to the same. Please help in preventing such edits and let me know what can be done.

It is unfortunate and highly distressing to find that the article put up by me had been entirely deleted and replaced by another content which is misleading - malafide and rather insinuating. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Triptoroy12041974 (talkcontribs) 15:03, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

So far as I can see, the edits were all improvements. Your edit[2] reversed the changes that turned it into an article more in line with other biographies and written in better English. It used better sources (among other things you used our articles as sources, which we don't do), it cited things according to WP:CITE. Your wording, which violated WP:NPOV was changed for the better. You may be the article's creator but you have no rights over it. I note that you've been given links on how to write a good article and on writing biographies. I'm sorry that your experience as a new editor has been unpleasant for you but you need to follow our guidelines and policies. I've reverted you - if there are any specific changes you want, please discuss them on the talk page first. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dougweller (talkcontribs) 15:17, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And please note that, despite your opening line "I wish to report malafide edits to my article" it is not "your" article - please read WP:OWN - Arjayay (talk) 15:59, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Need help choosing dubious/whom/citation-needed/weasel-words tag for article section

I am having trouble finding the correct template to tag a section of an article. The article on Vikings contains a section on common misconceptions about the Vikings. One of these "common misconceptions" is Viking use of skulls as drinking cups. The section begins by asserting (without any evidence):

"The use of human skulls as drinking vessels — another common motif in popular pictorial representations of the Vikings"

To be clear I have no problem with the statement "Vikings did not drink from skulls." My problem is with the assertion that many people think Vikings drank from skulls and/or that Vikings are commonly portrayed drinking from human skulls. The section then proceeds to offer possible explanation for this misconception. I take issue with the assertion that this is a common misconception. The section does not list any examples of pictures with vikings drinking out of skulls and in a cursory search I could not find any example pictures. I was able to ind other articles "clearing up this common misconception" but most of these third party articles appear to be heavily cribbed from the WP article. I can not find a template tag that seems to fit; Dubious /Citation needed/whom/etc? How should I indicate my disagreement with the section? Personally I would love to be bold and just delete this section but I think that is probably too bold without some chance for people to correct the article. Can anyone point me to the correct template tag? DouglasCalvert (talk) 21:14, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Have you posted your concerns about whether the misconception is common to the article talk page? Robert McClenon (talk) 21:42, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
For the "common motif" statement, (which produces:[according to whom?]) seems the most appropriate. Otherwise, the general (which produces:[weasel words]) could also work. Anon126 (talk - contribs) 21:50, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This page give a reference for the origin of the misconception. It does not say that anyone now believes it. Maproom (talk) 23:31, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This explanation is also the explanation given in the section in question. In fact this page is one of the pages I was referring to when I said the material was largely cribbed from the WP article. DouglasCalvert (talk) 00:31, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing errors on English Council of State

Reference help requested. I have never gotten a message like this before. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:67.162.57.227&redirect=no I don't know what I did wrong or how to fix it. I simply changed 1659 to 1653 because 1659 didn't make sense. I can't figure out what else is different how to reconnect the reference/citation. Please fix -- I guess I won't be doing any simple edits anymore. Thanks, 67.162.57.227 (talk) 23:58, 23 February 2014 (UTC) Joyce Meyer[reply]

Done. In this edit you not only changed a date in the article, you also changed the name of a reference (in the <ref name=XXXX> construct) but did not change the other places that named ref was used, leaving the references out of sync, with some named refs used but never defined. Changing the size of an image

I recently added an image to Pattern Recognition in Physics, however, I wanted to know how I can make it smaller as it seems to be way too big in its current form. Quotation

Can someone please take a look at this? [3] As nobody exactly said "educational purposes", is it okay to include "educational purposes" in a quotation? I would argue that a quotation is used to quote what somebody said, not for paraphrasing. What do you think? Timelezz (talk) 07:19, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, such "scare quotes" should be avoided. However, there is an actual quotation that could be used: "It is a good opportunity to invite our guests to watch. ... Is it possible to see recent changes in pages in a subcategory using Special:RecentChangesLinked or some other tool? Weighting of anonymous contributors' input in RfCs

Is there a policy statement or guideline that discusses how comments made by unregistered participants (that is to say, users posting anonymously from unregistered IP addresses) should be handled in the closure of Request for Comments discussions? I've seen a number of anecdotal comments that say that comments from IP addressses are discounted in RfC closures, but I am not aware that there is any formal rule on which such claims are based. If there isn't any formal rule, is the claim that IP address comments are discounted valid as far as actual practice goes? Dezastru (talk) 15:17, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It depends entirely on what their comments are. If the comment is a well-reasoned argument based in policy, then it counts just as much as if a seasoned editor made it. IPs are human too, and anyone closing an RFC who discounts an argument based solely on the fact that it was made by an unregistered editor should not be closing them at all. Yunshui  15:28, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If a registered contributor makes a poorly-reasoned comment that is not based on policy, then a closer would be expected to discount or ignore that comment as well, so from what you are saying there doesn't seem to be any difference between how registered users' comments and unregistered users' comments are supposed to be handled in closures.
Wikipedia:IPs are human too but that doesn't mean that their opinions count in RfCs, unless there is a policy or guideline (not just an essay laying out someone's opinion) that says they should (or should not). Dezastru (talk) 15:51, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Accessing Wiki's Help Desk and the proposed Wiki Amendment pages

1) Please can you tell me how to access, from scratch, the Wiki Help Desk. (After I have logged in, of course.)

2) Please can you tell me how to find the pages on Wiki's current Amendment proposal: (a) the page where the Amendment appears, and (b) the list of comments about the Amendment. Finding these is always hit and miss.

3) Why can I not find the full list of comments on the Amendment any more? There seems to have been a change today in listing these. Yesterday all comments were listed, with an index. Today some new comments are listed, omitting all the older ones, and with a completely different index, which refers to the new ones only. P123cat1 (talk) 16:43, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You have just accessed the Help Desk. Next time, access it the same way.
As for "Wiki's current Amendment proposal", which amendments are you referring to? All sorts of things get amended all the time. You will have to be a lot more specific to get a useful answer. AndyTheGrump (talk) 17:11, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
There are many ways to get to this help desk. One is to enter "WP:HD" in the search box (any capitalization works). Hi, User talk:User 38 just moved this page to Trumpeldor Cemetery (temp) without giving a reason. I've worked on the page and I really don't understand the new name. I also don't know how to undo it. I was going to contact User 38 on his/her talk page, but there I notice he/she is blocked for sockpuppetry. Can one of your administrators undo this move? Hello Jds319. Your attempt to add a reference was mis-formatted, and had the effect of blanking the rest of the content of the page Wikipedia Talk:Articles for creation/Parviz Kambin, so I have removed it. It is not an acceptable reference anyway, because it is a reference to a work by the subject, not writing about him: it is possible that it could appear in a "selected publications" section of the article, but it does nothing to establish that he is notable by Wikipedia standards, which is what is needed at this point. You need to find reliable sources, independent of Dr Kambin which have written at length about him: major newspapers or magazines, or books from reputable publishers. If you cannot find such references, then there cannot be an article about him in Wikipedia, no matter how you write it. Sorry. Please read WP:NACADEMICS for more information, and Referencing for beginners for how to put the references into the article. --ColinFine (talk) 19:44, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tranquil, Mississippi

Hi there, the article "tranquil" redirects to the article "Tranquil, Mississippi". My concern is that some of the redirects really shouldn't, eg. [4]. Should I remove the redirect? Or remove the wikilinks around "tranquil" in the articles it's used in? I don't think a disambiguation page is needed, as there's really only 1 article about Tranquil. Thanks for your advice. Magnolia677 (talk) 19:29, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the links should probably be removed (except the one from Wikipedia:Avoid using wikilinks because that one is just for humor). I've added a notice at the top of Tranquil, Mississippi just in case. Anon126 (talk - contribs) 20:16, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do that. Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 20:19, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I converted Tranquil from a redirect to a disambiguation page, so if there are any additional articles about things called "Tranquil" (or "tranquil") they can be added to the list on that page now. DES (talk) 20:41, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Birth/death dates in article text of subject's parents

Is there a guideline somewhere that says that we should/shouldn't put birth/death dates in the article text of the subject's parents? Something like "John Doe is the son of Joseph Doe (1934-1994) and Jane Doe (1935- )." I know I can be bold and remove such text if I don't like it, so please don't point me to WP:BOLD. I'm just looking for some guideline that says one way or another is preferred. I thought I remembered seeing something like this but I can't recall where. Thanks, Dismas|(talk) 01:51, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know of any specific guideline on the point. If the dates are cited, or not challenged as inaccurate, then the question would be whether they are relevant to the article on the child. They might well be, if hardly essential. If giving only years they can't possibly assist identity theft, I see no harm that is at all likely. DES (talk) 14:41, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of academic journals

Dear editors: I am trying to help a new editor who is creating an article about a journal, the type in which researchers publish their results. I am trying to explain about reliable sources. I thought that I would use as examples a couple of existing journals. Much to my surprise, after looking at 20 or so articles with titles beginning "Journal of...", I am unable to find even one with multiple sources showing that the journal has been written about extensively in other publications. Am I missing something? How can one tell if a journal is "notable"? And if journals are supposed to have external sources, can someone point me to an appropriate example? Thanks. —Anne Delong (talk) 05:46, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nature (journal) has plenty of sources. Dismas|(talk) 11:17, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Essays Wikipedia:Notability (periodicals) and more specifically Wikipedia:Notability (academic journals) (the latter are a subset of the former) may be helpful to some degree. User:DGG might be able to offer some advice. I note that the article on Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, the oldest and longest-running scientific journal in the world, is distinctly lacking in significant coverage in independent sources.
I guess the page in question is Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/American Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research? Arthur goes shopping (talk) 11:32, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but I wanted to give general advice on notability, so I will refer the editor to Wikipedia:Notability (academic journals). I checked out Nature (journal), and it appears to have plenty of sources, but of the ones that are online, if you discount sources that aren't about the journal, sources that are from the journal itself, sources that are Wikipedia articles, and press releases, there isn't that much left. Thanks, everyone, for your input. —Anne Delong (talk) 14:59, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Nature, being perhaps the most famous journal in the world, has sources, but this is an unusual exception. The GNG simply does not work for this type of material (it also does not work for newspapers and popular periodicals). The usual rule for inclusion is being covered by selective indexes. There is incomplete agreement over which indexes are sufficiently selective, but no journal with coverage in Journal citation Reports has been deleted in the last 5 year sat least. (they are heavily biased against anything that is not a mainstream English language journal from a major science=producing country, and in any case cannot by their very nature include journals with less than two years of publication data, which means that we can not limit ourself to this one criterion.) the journal in question is however very dubious for inclusion on any reasonable criterion: they have so far published only one issue, and are not sponsored by any reputable institution or established publisher. If there were references to it, they'd just be PR. I've commented accordingly. I try to avoid just referring people to our complicated and usually ambiguous policy has if it were meaningful explanation DGG ( talk ) 17:18, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your question though, you could ask discuss the move with the editor who moved the page. Starting a discussion on the talk page for other editors to see would probably be most beneficial. If you can't move the article back on your own, you could ask an admin to do it at Wikipedia:Requested moves. Though the admin is going to want a well reasoned argument as to why it should be done. Not inside a standard thumb. You can try using a template like Image frame. Edokter (talk) — 14:24, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Judging by their edit history, I'm assuming they mean the image here. It looks perfectly fine to me; if it's an issue for other users I would suggest just editing the image and adding some whitespace to the sides and refrain from using unconventional templates in actual articles. Scarce2 (talk) 14:31, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
IMHO a slightly larger image helps - 100px gives 14 lines of text, 130px only 9, so the length is no greater, but the image is clearer and by avoiding one word per line in the caption, the text is more readable. Arjayay (talk) 15:03, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A long time ago, I stumbled across a template that could be used to display content with a border and caption very similar to image formatting. This was not a quote template like quote box, though the formatting was very similar. You could use it around latex, IIRC, though I failed to use it for a clade-based tree (I didn't know of cladogram at the time). Franksaid, you would remove the notice by deleting near the top of the article. However I see that all but one of the added citations are to The Westport Library 1908-2008 Century Report, which looks as if it might not be independent of the library, and the other is to a grant notice from the "Institute of Museum and Library Services". Such notices often draw heavily on the grant applications drafted by the institutions applying for grants. Any additions clearly independent sources would be welcome. Hi Radioriot; so first of all you should know that no one owns any Wikipedia page. Wikipedia pages can be edited by anyone and no one person has control over any article. Since the page appears to be being vandalised by multiple IPs, you should make a request at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection for the page to be semi-protected. This will stop anyone without an autoconfirmed account from editing the page. Currently that would include yourself, but once you've had the account for 4 days and made 10 edits you'll be autoconfirmed. Lastly you should read the Conflict of Interest guidelines, which outline why it's generally a bad idea to work on articles you're related to or being paid to work on. Query re Revision History pages

I notice that although two small edits I made this week to two Wiki articles have obviously been accepted (because the current Wiki articles appear with those edits), they are listed in the Revision History pages for those articles with "(undo)" beside them. Why is this? P123cat1 (talk) 00:13, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Every edit has "undo" next to it. See WP:UNDO CTF83! 00:20, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. And your edits have not "been accepted", in any active sense. It's just that no-one has seen fit to revert or change them. I had a quick look at your edits to articles myself, and found four. Three were, in my view, clear improvements. One I considered a change very slightly for the worse, but certainly not to the point where I will do anything about it. This is, I would say, par for the course or better. I am certainly happy enough myself if three-quarters of my edits survive in the long term. Maproom (talk) 07:40, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for that information, Maproom. I don't know if the practice of putting (undo) beside edits in the list is new. I have made edits in the past, but have never noticed this before. (I am curious to know which edit you found not so good, but if it is difficult for you look it up, please don't bother - you have better things to do with your time!) Two pages I created

Can you look at the two pages I created and tell me what is wrong with them?

The name of the pages are: Raymie Muzquiz and Chris Reccardi — Preceding unsigned comment added by StephenCezar15 (talkcontribs) 00:49, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I fixed the references format issue. You had the reflist template in the right place but you were trying to call a reference after that. All references must be before the reflist. But you still have not provided references to secondary sources which show that the people are notable per Wikipedia's guidelines. See WP:BIO for what makes a person notable and how to show it in the article. Dismas|(talk) 00:59, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Gilbert had 2 daughters from previous marriages Susan Gilbert and Gigi Gilbert.

Hi, I need to edit my father's Wikipedia page....My name is Susan M. Gilbert, I am the first daughter of Paul Gilbert(actor) and Patti Jean Ross, I was born in Denver, CO (Redacted) 1950. I deserve to be added to his information... I can provide proof of my birth-right. Patti Jean Ross was also a famous dancer. They were divorced when I was 1 year old. Paul also has another daughter, Gigi Gilbert, born in 1952. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Srandallink (talkcontribs) 01:28, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You will need to provide published reliable sources that support such claims. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 01:38, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Lauren Powers (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Hi Help Desk. I represent entertainment personality Lauren Powers. And I was asked to look into repetitive forced changes to her Wiki page.

Someone keeps maliciously changing her birthdate on her Wiki page to attempt to reflect her to be 5 years older than she really is. She was born in 1962, and this is supported by her California Drivers License.

Lauren has competitor interests that are trying to keep her from being successful with her own line of National Fitness Competitions, and we believe they are changing the date to sabotage her and adversely affect her TV, Film and commercial bookings in Hollywood.

How can we permanently change the Wiki entry to reflect the birth year of 1962, and NOT 1958 that it keeps getting changed to? Is there a way to verify this and then lock it out from future changes? 1962 is accurate. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Heshion (talkcontribs) 06:22, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you changed her DoB from 1958 to 1962, then changed it again to 1961. What would really help is a reliable published source. I doubt that a driver license qualifies. Maproom (talk) 07:57, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed her birth date info since there is no source for the info. Please see WP:BLP for justification. Dismas|(talk) 08:39, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation/Redirect

I want to change the page The Full English into a disambiguation for that term rather than just a redirect to the page that was there before, now The Full English (album). I can't see this information on any of the disambiguation pages: can I just change the page contents and include a link to The Full English (album) or will this undermine how moving pages works? A template of what I want to make the disambiguation page look like is available in my sandbox. Thanks for your help! RuthSalter (talk) 14:23, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you can replace the redirect by what you've got in your sandbox. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:31, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hi Ruth. The sandbox version you've created looks fine, just move it over the redirect to the new title The Full English. The page history is all at The Full English (album), so you won't destroy anything by putting a dab page there instead. Yunshui  14:32, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Editing

I have tried to make minor grammatical and spelling edits as I find them, persons who are obviously ignorant of English usage keep removing them. I shall no longer waste my time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zarcillo (talkcontribs) 15:45, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry you feel that way. Having checked, I can't actually see any recent instance where your edits have been reverted, though - yours are the last edits to Tajikistan, and are still in situ. Yunshui  15:48, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
In this edit you removed a space after the word "the", reverting your own previous edit, but I have put the space back in again for you. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:56, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Zarcillo: I have examined your recent edits and I'm also unable to find removals. It's hard to say what is happening when you didn't give any example but I wonder whether your browser has cached an old version of the articles and you just need to bypass your cache to see the current version. If that doesn't work then please give an example. Your edits can be seen at Special:Contributions/Zarcillo. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:08, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How do I add information to Wikipedia?

I would like to add some information about technology adoption to Wikipedia...how do I do that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lori McCrae (talkcontribs) 16:12, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

first you find reliably published sources that verify the claims about the subject. then you find the article and you edit it just like you did here, presenting content from a neutral point of view, representing all major academic views of the subject. then you add footnotes so that others can verify the content. then you add an edit summary to help people understand what/why behind your edit. then you save. then you be prepared for other editors to adopt, move, rewrite, remove your content as they assess it against existing content and their reliable sources. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 16:28, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Adding references

I am trying to add reference supporting the information I have edited. But red letters are appearing instead of the references being accepted. Why — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gorri (talkcontribs) 17:03, 26 February 2014‎ (UTC)[reply]

I have moved your question to the foot of the page (which is where new topics go), added a section heading, & signed it for you. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:12, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Each of the red error messages has a blue link at the end of the message to the relevant specific help page. If you read those, they will tell you what you did wrong. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:15, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

• If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Wikipedia's image use policy.
• If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, add to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. See our picture tutorial for more information. I hope this helps.Template:Z40--ukexpat (talk) 17:33, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph of Taiichi Ohno

Returning to a previous point made here, I contacted Toyota about the photograph of Ohno, but they didn’t seem to be interested in donating it. On the other hand I found a photo of him here: http://www.nwlean.net/leandefs.htmLbertolotti (talk) 17:52, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

the image is still likely copyright, but since the subject is dead, Wikipedia (but not Commons) can make a WP:FAIR use claim. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:39, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Finding the culprit on a page with hundreds of transclusions

At requested moves there is one request out of a few hundred that is transcluding one or more ref tags, causing the project page to display a cite error message at the bottom of a missing reflist. If nothing is done it's not that big a deal; within a week or two it will fall out in the natural course as requests are closed. But I was wondering if anyone can think of a way to easily find the culprit – that is, something less stupidly mechanical and laborious than opening up a few hundred requests to find the offending member.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:15, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's Talk:Memorial Medical Center and Hurricane Katrina, I added a reflist, previewed, and clicked the button to go up to the reference. Samwalton9 (talk) 18:19, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I made an edit at Talk:Memorial Medical Center and Hurricane Katrina that hopefully will get rid of the red error message the next time the RMCD bot runs. EdJohnston (talk) 18:31, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I at first thought it didn't work, and attempted to add noinclude tags, but yeah, I would have to wait for the bot to manually refresh (I forgot, these are not direct tranclusions [and now I know or suspect how Sam found this, by just opening up Wikipedia:Requested moves/Current discussions and searched for the ref tags]). Thanks all!--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:40, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My fix doesn't work. Will leave a note for User:Wbm1058 the author of the bot, to see if he understands it. EdJohnston (talk) 19:55, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@EdJohnston: Ah, well the attempt is appreciated. Since /Current discussions is transcluded at the WP:RM main page, I'll just go add noinclude tags around the ref's there.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:08, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, I think it did work. When I search the current discussion page for ref tags I find them in that discussion in noinclude tags, so then I backtracked and saw you did not edit that page but the discussion page, which means the bot successfully incorproated your edits on its run. So, why is the error tag still showing? Lo and behold, when I search current discussions I find that there is a second discussion with a ref tag (conspiring to confound us). Let's see if noincluding that gets rid of the error.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:14, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, fixed. Thanks again.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:18, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

() The bot doesn't use transclusion to create the current discussions list, so hiding with noinclude tags won't work. You can either pull the Reflist-talk inside the proposer's signature, and thus include the refs on the RM/CD page, or pull the citations outside the proposer's signature, so that they are an additional comment by the proposer in support. I think the second option is preferable, so I'll try that. Wbm1058 (talk) 20:37, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Wbm1058: Because /current discussions is transcluded into WP:RM, the noinclude tags will not affect what one sees if viewing /current discussions directly, but it will if viewing WP:RM, which is all we really care about, yes? And it actually did fix that display.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:13, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, yes, I think you're right. Of course we may need to null edit/purge the page to make sure that the latest version is transcluded. Sigh, it's complicated. Wbm1058 (talk) 21:22, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

To rename a page, you need to move it. See WP:MOVE for details. RudolfRed (talk) 20:38, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that you will not be able to move any pages until your account is autoconfirmed, which is an editing threshold that it passed when an account has made at least ten edits (you have) and is at least four days old (which yours will be at 20:06 UTC on March 2, 2014). Please also note the common names section of article titling policy. It appears to me based upon a quick search of Google Books that the common name is "...Company", rather than "...Group". Error 'Search Help'

Something broke? I repeatedly get "There was an error while searching: Timeout at the HTTP-request." Timelezz (talk) 21:15, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What to do?

Kind regards, Timelezz (talk) 21:26, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
