Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
• For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
• Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
• If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
• Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
• For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
• New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

IPblock-exempt?

I notice that there is a such thing an IPblock-EXEMPT status. How does one get such a status. I am spending a lot of time in libraries again and would like to pursue such and exemption.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:21, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As noted at Wikipedia:IP block exemption, it is ONLY granted in cases where there is demonstrated need, and often removed when the need has passed. "Demonstrated need" in this case is that you are currently blocked by a hard block (no editing with accounts or IPs) from an IP address or IP Range where you are editing. It is unlikely you will be editing from an IP address which has been hardblocked. If you are, you'll know, because your inability to edit articles will tell you that. Unless and until you find yourself in that situation, it is unlikely that IP Block Exemption status would be granted. --Jayron32 04:29, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I now realize that I am listed at Special:ListUsers/ipblock-exempt, but that I got blocked at a Chicago Public Library IP address about a week or two ago. What gives?--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 23:56, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No idea. You were given the IPBlockExemption back in 2009; no idea why it didn't work for you a few weeks ago. Maybe there's some kind double secret block that the IP got hit with? --Jayron32 03:57, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki needs an article on InterNACHI

Wiki needs an article on InterNACHI. I can't find one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.33.152.26 (talk) 04:43, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia doesn't need anything. But if you think that InterNACHI meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability of organisations, you are welcome to create the article (I suggest reading your first article or to put in a request at requested articles. --ColinFine (talk) 09:28, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Write Articles

I want to write articles and make a wikipedia page but i am confused. Can anybody help me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Faizankhanlohani1 (talkcontribs) 09:02, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Faizankhanlohani1, try reading Your First Article, and see if that helps. If you are still confused, perhaps you would be able to ask a more specific question at that point. That would allow us to help you more effectively. DES (talk) 09:12, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Because Wikipedia, as an encyclopedia, is a pretty unique creature on the web, it might also pay to read about what Wikipedia is not because a lot of people come in with a serious misunderstanding . -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 13:19, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

high risk merchant account

Hello, My article on High risk merchant account is removed no matter how many times I revise it. There is a huge importance for merchants to know the difference between a merchant account and a high risk merchant account. We have been in the industry for 10 years and everyday we deal with educating people on the differences. I wanted to create a qiki page that explained this. In short, just so you can understand. Typical banks like " Chase bank, Bank of America, wells fargo, ect" will only set up merchant accounts for retial stores that "physically can touch" a persons credit/debit card. Places like, dry cleaners, clothing stores, restaurants, jewelry, ect. They WILL NOT set up merchant accounts for industries such as: Call centers, Diet Pills online, MLM, Hotel discount websites, Coupon sites, Debt collection agencies, credit repair agencies, tech support companies, ect. These companies need a "high risk merchant account" because all of their customers are not face to face with the merchant and there is a higher probability for chargebacks or stolen credit cards. Their rates will be higher and there will be more rules and regulations with these "high risk merchant accounts" That being said, I really would like to create the page to educate the public on the vast differences but it seems that due to the lack of awareness of wiki editors they think it is advertising, so if you could help me better understand I would really appreciate it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bmp17 (talkcontribs) 14:22, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Bmp17: we are an encyclopedia, not a "how to" nor a place to "warn" unwary merchants -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 14:43, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It is actually still located at High Risk Merchant Account it just doesn't cite any sources as to why high risk merchant accounts are notable or verifable. Including those will greatly increase the odds of the articles survival. uhhlive (talk) 14:48, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Aaaaaaand....its gone. If you want to rewrite it, I would highly recommend reading this page on writing your first article and following the style and guidelines there. uhhlive (talk) 16:10, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia projects

I was looking at Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions when I noticed at the top an invitation to take part in a survey on harassment. The first question in the survey was about how often I take part in "Wikimedia projects". I have no idea what these are, so I tried to find out, failed, and abandoned the survey. Is this Help Desk a "Wikimedia project"? How about "Wikipedia:Graphics_Lab", or Wikipedia:WikiProject_Chemistry? If users unfamiliar with this obscure piece of terminology are forced to abandon the survey, there'll be a lot of bias in who can take part. Maproom (talk) 17:27, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to find the survey again so as to provide a link, and got this mystifying page. Maproom (talk) 17:35, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
A Wikimedia project is a wiki-based project run by the Wikimedia Foundation. Everything at wikipedia.org is part of Wikipedia, the best known Wikimedia project. See meta:Harassment survey 2015. meta: is a coordination site for Wikimedia projects. I haven't seen the survey and think it's only presented to a small part of the visitors of Wikimedia projects. The questions are apparently not published until after the survey is over. Based on your post I guess some or all of the questions are not specific to the project the user saw the survey at. You can post feedback at meta:Talk:Harassment survey 2015. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:55, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The bottom of your contributions page has a link on "accounts" to meta:Special:CentralAuth/Maproom. This shows which Wikimedia wikis your account is registered at (currently 131 including language editions), and how many edits you have there. If you view a page at a wiki while you are logged in at another wiki then your account is automatically registered, so the list may include wikis you don't remember. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:09, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. That is fascinating. I am surprised that I have contributed to so many wikis that I had forgotten existed, or are in languages that I can't read! Maproom (talk) 20:25, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What's fun is finding out that you've made changes in wikis whose language character set won't even display in your browser! (And yes, I've done that, in cases where the references mention "John Hopkins University")Naraht (talk) 21:15, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Victims Perth Band, rebuttal on character assassination by David Faulkner & James Baker.

For starters, I was never ever informed to any re releases via 1977 Records Japan, if I was asked I would have declined, because the music at best is moderate to say the least, in fact it sucks, I had let past releases through but again, was never ever consulted if my mechanical rights could be used. The LIVE album, I would NEVER have allowed to go ahead, due to the simple fact its embarrassing for me to listen to what is no more than utter rubbish, out of tune out of time and in general, bad all round.

David Faulkner & James Baker have never ever sought my permission, never called me not texted me via Facebook, in which I am freely available, so for your article to state they disagreed with me is wrong.

I declined on the release of the song "High School Girls" to be used in the movie for the "MULE" because I felt it totally inappropriate a 56 year old man allowing a song about picking up high school girls, especially in a climate were pedophilia is rife.

I would like you to advise me on what in your opinions would be the best forum to contact to settle matters once & for all? as I am sick to death of hearing liable statements from both David Faulkner and James Baker? Finally, I am seeking legal advise toward the consistent liable comments from the two parties concerned. I have taken measures so that no re releases will ever come out again for the next 99 years. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.151.198.244 (talk) 19:43, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect details

The information about Royal Navy ranks at this link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Navy_officer_rank_insignia is incorrect. For example an OF-4 Navy equivalent is a Commander not Lt Commander and an OF5 is a Captain.

2016 NCAA Division I FBS football season

Hey Guys when will the article for the 2016 NCAA Division I FBS Article come out hopefully in a week or 2. 68.102.61.195 (talk) 23:06, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Articles are made and edited by volunteers who choose what to work on. Nobody is assigned specific work so we cannot predict when somebody will make an article. If you click "View history" and then "oldest" on articles from previous years then you can see when they were created, for example 19 December 2014‎ for 2015 NCAA Division I FBS football season.[1] 2016 may or may not be similar. You can submit an article for review at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:24, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

MCQ question about file upload wizard

A user at WP:MCQ#Permission from email asks why the file upload wizard has an trick option for permission on Wikipedia only. (I have wondered the same thing.) The question is obviously not in scope for MCQ, but I don’t know where to refer her. —teb728 t c 05:27, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I guess I didn't actually ask a question: So, is there a good place to ask about this feature of the file upload wizard and maybe request it removal? —teb728 t c 09:38, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard has a navbox with a "Discuss" link to Wikipedia talk:File Upload Wizard. Many uploaders give false license claims to make the upload go through. I guess the option is a measure against that. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:26, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I will refer the MCQ OP to your reply. —teb728 t c 13:55, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Take Ownership Of Page?

Dear Wikipedia Help Desk,

My name is Patrick Mac Manus and I work at Loyola College, Watsonia (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Loyola_College,_Melbourne). I am wondering if companies, such as Loyola College, can take ownership of pages and be given exclusive editing rights to the page so that way malicious content cannot be added?

• @Patmac251188: No that would go against the very foundation that Wikipedia is built on. See WP:OWN. Nobody owns any page. Anyone can make any edit to any page at any time. If you find vandalism you are invited to remove it however nobody will be granted exclusive rights over any page. --Stabila711 (talk) 08:54, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) No, you most certainly can't. See WP:Ownership of content. You are in general the last people who should be editing the page, see WP:conflict of interest, though nobody is likely to object if you were to revert blatant vandalism. - David Biddulph (talk) 08:58, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Patmac251188's only edit to the article was to comment off two "notable alumni" on the suspicion that they were not alumni. This seems reasonable to me, despite his conflict of interest, as he is in a better position to check than we are. However it is now moot – I have deleted them both as they were not notable. New article Bull TV comedy

Hi I have been trying to create a page for a uk tv comedy called Bull (2015 TV series) (there is a same named programme in the USA) and I have received this message below, and I have absolutely no clue how to fix it or what to do.

"This article needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources" SimDiago (talk) 15:11, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@SimDiago: It means that an editor has requested, by placing the tag there, that they think the article would be improved if there were more references to sources such as magazine articles, web sites, newspaper articles, etc. which discuss the show. Dismas|(talk) 16:59, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hello, SimDiago. That is a message which has been added manually by an editor (you can look at the article's history to see who) and may be removed by any editor when they think that the problem has been fixed. The problem is that there are no independent sources. While the references are to reliable sources, and the citations are formatted correctly, both the sources are clearly regurgitations of a press release. Wikipedia has almost no interest in what the subject of an article (or their associates) have to say about the subject: an article should be nearly 100% based on what people unconnected with the subject have published about it. If you can find a substantial independent piece of writing about it (such as a review) then it can ground the article; if you cannot, then the subject is not at present notable in Wikipedia's special sense, and no article about it, however written, will be acceptable at present. --ColinFine (talk) 17:02, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Changing name of page from Denver Montclair International School to International School of Denver

Hello,

I work for the International School of Denver, formerly the Denver Montclair International School. I have made some edits on the Montclair page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denver_Montclair_International_School) to represent this name change; however I cannot figure out how to change the actual name of the page from Denver Montclair International School to the International School of Denver. Can someone help me do this? Or do I need to create an entirely new page, and then somehow have people that search "Denver Montclair" be redirected?

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Callynisd (talkcontribs)

Done - Hello @Callynisd:, I have moved the page for you (uncontroversial rename). Please see also WP:COI for more information about editing Wikipedia with a "conflict of interest". @Flamegang7630: Maybe we can answer if you give a link to the page you want to see in Google, and to the Google search or page where you want to see it. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:33, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Flamegang7630: Right now you have an account here but no user page. So, that wouldn't show until you create it. And your sandbox page, by default, is not indexed by Google. So that won't show up either. That said, Wikipedia is not a web host, so if you're looking to post something about yourself and have Google find that then I think you might have an incorrect idea of what Wikipedia is. We're here to build an encyclopedia. Not to draw attention to our own user pages. Dismas|(talk) 16:56, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Merging pages

If there is a discussion about merging two pages how is a consensus established. The assertion is that the two pages have significantly duplicate comment.

Is it OK to merge two pages for content based reasons, e.g. to merge pages of an organization that one does not like.

Is there a central repository on Wikipedia where suggestions for page mergers can be discussed so that decisions are not content based.

If a person proposes the merger, and another person object, is it enough for the person to say that that person is not neutral for their comment to be dismissed.

How does Wikipedia arbitrate such issues and do administrators get involved and can they be contacted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:BC73:E3B0:A0AA:B4A:AA05:733D (talk) 17:40, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This appears to be about whether to merge Live Action (organization) and Lila Rose. The discussion at Talk: Live Action (organization) appears to be inconclusive. @Naree66: Error messages are about the source code of the page and not the rendered page. The source editor shows five <ref name=Nasdaq> in the infobox code. In VisualEditor you have to edit the infobox to see it. VisualEditor will often be poor to fix syntax erors. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:47, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Omission of Disley Golf club on the Disley page

Hi. Would it be possible to add "Disley golf club" to the page about "Disley" ( Cheshire) There is reference to a golf club that only lasted 30 years but Disley golf club has been a part of the village since 1889 and is still open today. Its address is on Stanley Hall lane.

Below is a transcript from the golf clubs home page. http://www.disleygolfclub.co.uk/home.aspx?i=no

'Disley Golf Club welcomes you to this traditional Club where golf has been played for over 125 years. The Club is situated ten miles from Manchester on the very edge of the Peak District. The views from all aspects are truly breathtaking, and on a clear day over eight counties can be seen. This parkland, moorland course is a good test for all abilities with, some say, the finest greens in Cheshire.

Formed in 1889 this mature parkland golf course is set amongst the stunning countryside on the Cheshire and Derbyshire border . The 6002 yard, par 70, golf course has been self titled “the jewel of the Peak District” due to its well maintained condition and amazing views.'

Kind regards Linda Almeda 86.179.185.169 (talk) 17:51, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Linda. If a reliable source (such as a major newspaper, or a book from a reputable publisher), independent of the club, has published information about the club, then that information could possibly be added to the article, cited to that independent publication - though it would also require consensus that the information was encyclopaedic. But Wikipedia has almost no interest in what an organisation wants to say about itself: normally, only if people unconnected with the club have thought it worth writing about will it meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability. --ColinFine (talk) 18:38, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Resolved

The French article fr:Cassis (fruit) has three "Autres langues" links: en, es, and ja. But when I clicked on "Modifier les liens" to display the Wikidata page, it it displays not a single one. It turns out, the three linked articles all are connected with the French article about the plant, fr:Ribes nigrum; it just so happens that French is the only Wikipedia that makes that distinction. Therefore, three questions:

1. Why does fr:Cassis (fruit) display these three?
2. Why don't these three links get displayed in the Wikidata page?
3. What should be done in a case like this? It obviously is desirable to allow a user to navigate from the French article about the fruit to any other language article that covers that fruit, regardless if that article happens to cover the plant as well. — Sebastian 20:06, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The french article is "doing it by hand", the way it was done before wikidata, and the end of the article in french, it has [en:Blackcurrant]] es:Grosella negra ja:黒すぐり. the Wikidata entry apparently has the english, spanish and japanese articles as well as fr:Ribes nigrum. Given that French splits it, unless the other languages do as well, I believe that is a quite reasonable way to do it.Naraht (talk) 20:37, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, thanks, I didn't notice that they did it by hand there. That answers questions 1 and 2.
So, do I understand you correctly that that's the best we can do? It doesn't show all the other links, and I don't think it would make sense to have only the most common languages. For instance, if Occitan gets a corresponding article, it would be useful for users of the French Wikipedia if they knew about it. Is there no way to allow that, say, with something like a redirect? — Sebastian 20:47, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Corresponding article to which? Cassius or Ribes Nigrum?Naraht (talk) 22:02, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Either, or both, it doesn't matter. The plant and its fruit are obviously closely connected; it will hardly be a problem to talk about both in the same article. That's in all likelihood what a small Wikipedia like that for Occitan would do. — Sebastian 01:43, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My question is actually very general. It's neither limited to blackcurrants, nor to any language. It's simply: When an article A in one language corresponds to articles B and C in another, is there any way to use Wikidata (rather than the "by hand" approach) to link from B to A and from C to A? (With symbols: B←→A and C→A.) — Sebastian 02:00, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No. That is one of the severe limitations of Wikidata. It is a frequent problem, as there is often not a one-to-one mapping of article subjects from one language's Wikipedia to another. --David Biddulph (talk) 04:00, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that resolves the help desk issue. I presume there must already be a Phabricator ticket, given that it's a frequent problem. Is it this one: phab:T54564? — Sebastian 07:23, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If I understand that ticket correctly, it only addresses part of the problem. My impression is that the Wikidata developers don't see it as a problem; it is only the editors of articles that realise that it is. - David Biddulph (talk) 08:36, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Saving edit, please wait

Hello, it's my first edit I made today: I just replaced a link and as I tried to save the change, the system hung up with the information "saving edit, please wait" for about 10 minutes. I interrupted the session, edited again, saved again, and the same problem appears. I'm waiting now since about 20 minutes for the saving of the edit, it seems to be hung up again. I'm working with an iPad. Any hints? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Keahak (talkcontribs) 22:24, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help setting up page.

Hello, we were attempting to set up a page for Mr. Kendal Wade. However, we are very confused on how to set up such a page. Can you please hello. We have all of his information. we began the page and copied some information from another Wiki page to see how it look but we think our page may have been flagged because of that. please help if you can. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theprojectforchange (talkcontribs) 23:59, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. Check out Your First Article for tips and guidance on getting started. You should also read the conflict of interest guidelines. RudolfRed (talk) 00:25, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
"The Project For Change" is Kendal Wade's organization. Regardless of whether we approve of the organization or not, the effort to create an article about your leader, boss, client or self is a violation of our rules on conflict of interest, paid editing, or possibly autobiography. The account with an organization name has been given a causeblock. --Orange Mike | Talk 05:33, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Theprojectforchangte. It might help to realise that "setting up a page" is not what we do here. This is an encyclopaedia, not a directory or social media: what we do is write (neutral) articles about subjects. If an article is created about Wade, it will be required to be based almost entirely on what people unconnected with Wade or with the Project have been written, and neither Wade nor the Project will have any control over what goes on there. Anything the least bit promotional will be likely to get removed. --ColinFine (talk) 13:24, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help with Gwen Stefani "Used to Love You" page

2

Above is link of page I am having an issue with.

I have repeatedly tried, both logged in and out, to add necessary information about the song that is missing (also giving sources), but it has been repeatedly removed. Could someone assist?

Here is what I am trying to edit on the page:

Under list of songwriters, the songwriter Teal Douville is missing from the list.

To verify this claim here is a link to the official song info from Warner Chappell Publishing: http://www.warnerchappell.com/song-details/WW010528486000

As you can see, Teal Douville is listed as a writer on the song.

Help!

Automated archiving of Wikipedia namespace page

Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop has become too large and although archives were previously made, I think it has now ceased. The archive histories would appear to show it was done manually as it was not by a bot. Ideally I would like topics marked with resolved or stale to only be archived, as some very old topics are still being worked on. I appreciate any help or a point in the right direction. Jolly Ω Janner 05:05, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Philg88 (and others) have been archiving this manually, on a somewhat irregular basis, since January 2014. Perhaps they can chime in as to the reason. The bot's (User:DyceBot) page still appears to list archiving of this page as one of its functions, perhaps its owner, Dycedarg can take a look as well. If they don't see this, asking on their respective talk pages would be a good first step. OTOH, I don't see why you couldn't just do a manually archiving pass now, assuming Philg88 can't do it at the moment.. Rwessel (talk) 06:25, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the ping Rwessel. I do sporadically try and tidy up the page and will try to spend more time on it. AFAIK a bot can't archive the page because of the complexity of the date analysis required. Unfortunately, many requesters do not mark their entries as resolved and there are many things that prima facie appear "stale" but actually aren't. Note that there is also a convention that resolved requests are left for a month before archiving. As I say, I will try and keep a closer eye on things.  Philg88 talk 07:39, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Phil, I can help manually archive when I see topics that have been clearly resolved for over a month. Jolly Ω Janner 19:30, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Moving an essay to "Wikipedia:"

I want to move User:George Ho/Ignore all rules? to "Wikipedia:" namespace. But I don't know whether the essay title is accurate. Move it anyway, or are there other suggestions? --George Ho (talk) 05:54, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest rename it when you move it, since the "User:George Ho" part would be dropped off, leaving just "Ignore all rules", and of course that page already exists. Come up with a new name for the essay, then you could potentially move it to Wikipedia-space and list it under the essays section on the main IAR page. Image captions

Is centering the caption preferred? Should a period be used if the caption is NOT a sentence? TY. Buster Seven Talk 07:13, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WP:CAP gives the guidelines for captions. As WP:CAPFRAG on that page explains, no period should be used if a caption is not a sentence. With regard to centering, that's not preferred, and I've seldom seen it in normal thumbnail images, though some forms of image galleries have centered captions as the default. Can I cite a book's introduction for what the book says?

I know that I cannot cite a book as a reference to what that book says – reading and understanding the book would qualify as original research. But can I cite the introduction of the book? specifically, of a later edition of the book?

The case I have in mind is the The Mayor of Casterbridge, where it says "The book implies that Lucette ... and Henchard have a sexual relationship[citation needed]". To me, the book clearly implies it; but other readers may be less familiar with the circumlocutions used by late-Victorian English writers. I find that the introduction of the 1978 Penguin edition, written by Martin Seymour-Smith, confirms it. Can I cite this introduction? Maproom (talk) 12:15, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You could cite the introduction (which i presume is to a particular edition) as if it were a critical article about the book, Maproom. Be sure that you include the name of the author of the introduction, and the exact bibliographic data for the edition you are citing.
It is not correct that you "cannot cite a book as a reference to what that book says". One may indeed cite a book for what it says. Citing it for what it implies, even if the implication is quite clear to most readers, is different and may well be OR. To use a different work of fiction as an example, one could write about The Lord of the Rings "Gandalf says that no one can safely take the Ring to wield it for good purposes." with a cite to Book II, Chapter 2 "The Council of Elrond". That is a more or less direct quote, which any reader can verify. One cannot, however say "Tolkien treats the Ring as addictive." with a cite to the book itself. Tolkein never explicitly says this, although several critics, notably Tom Shippey, have said so. One must in such a case cite one or more of the critics. I suspect the sexual relationship between Lucette and Henchard is in the latter category, but I don't recall the details well enough to be sure. Or to take another instance, one might write of the Nero Wolfe series "The books imply that Archie and Lily Rowan have a sexual relationship." I (personally) think the implication is quite clear, if one is familiar with the circumlocutions used by mid-twentieth century American writers. However, the author never directly says this, so I would think a secondary source would be needed for such a statement. DES (talk) 13:21, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom I misread the signature, and I wrote the above to some extent as if you were a rather less experienced editor. Had I realized that it was you, i wouldn't have included "Be sure that you include the name of the author of the introduction, and the exact bibliographic data for the edition you are citing." You know that sort of thing perfectly well. My apologies. DES (talk) 16:32, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
DESiegel No problem at all. I don't know as much as I'd like about giving references – for instance how, in this case, to cause Seymour-Smith's name to appear as a link, so that readers can see that he's a reputable critic. Anyway, thank you for your very clear and informative paragraphs of explanation. Maproom (talk) 16:49, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom If you cite Seymour-Smith as the author, you could do something like or perhaps even better The second form uses the chapter= parameter to identify the specific part of the book Seymour-Smith is being credited with, but in either case the author-link parameter gives the name of a Wikipedia article about the author, if one exists. Hilton Head Prep issues with vandalism on page.

We are seeing an uptick in students changing, deleting and vandalizing the Hilton Head Prep wikipedia page. Hilton Head Preparatory School The issue is that many edits are coming from students hot spots, mifi's or cell phones. We do not want to block wikipedia from our computers as this will not solve the issue. Additionally we feel that wikipedia is a tool that can be utilized in education but with the uptick of inappropriate or unnecessary edits we are reaching out for a solution. Is it possible to have our page locked even if for a short time? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jhtechguy (talkcontribs) 16:47, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We hare at Wikipedia are very reluctant to fully protect (aka "lock down" ) articles except in quite unusual circumstances. I see less than a dozen instances of vandalism on Hilton Head Preparatory School since July of last year, hardly a torrent. Mosat were reverted quite promptly, although in one case the reverting editor only removed part of the vandalism (I have fixed this), and in another the reverting editor also removed what seems to have been long-standing valid content. We could apply "semi-protection", which means that a page can be modified only by users who are logged in and whose accounts have been confirmed (any account is automatically confirmed if it is at least 4 days old and has made at least 10 edits or posts). However I see several of the valid edits and vandalism reverrts come from users who are not logged in, and this would block such edits also. WE vcould try Pending changes protection, which holds edits from unconfirmed or non-logged-in users until they are approved. This can have problems if not many users with the "Reviewer" right watch the page, as legitimate edits may be long delayed. Anyone may request protection at Requests for Protection, but it is not always granted. Or you may respond here, and I or another admin may choose to act on your request. 1941 ford

Gentlemen , on your Wikipedia page for 1941 Ford car , the photo is WRONG, the photo is of a 1946 Ford car. Again the top photo shows a 1946 Ford, it should be a 1941 Ford as the article is about 1941 Ford cars. Mr. Robert Gouveia @redacted@ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.99.184.50 (talk) 17:08, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I assume this is about the article 1941 Ford. The picture at the top is captioned "1946 Ford coupe". Maybe the title of the article is misleading - the second sentence of the article explains "The 1941 design would continue in an aborted 1942 model year and would be restarted in 1946 and produced until the more modern 1949 Fords were ready." So the article is really about all Ford cars produced from 1941 until 1949. Maproom (talk) 17:31, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Replace image on Wikipedia

How can I replace an image of someone on Wikipedia with a better one? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gburkhar (talkcontribs) 19:01, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Also, informing us of the article you wish to work on would also help.--Aspro (talk) 20:23, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If you are uploading an image to Commons, you need to make sure that it is appropriate from a copyright standpoint. Is it a photo you took yourself? If not, where did it come from? ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 20:31, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
But note that if you want to upload an image that is not already there, the image must be licensed appropriately. If it's a photo you took yourself, you can do that as you upload it; but if it's an image you found somewhere on the internet, its copyright is almost certainly incompatible with Wikimedia, in which case you may not upload it. --ColinFine (talk) 20:33, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2016 NFL Season

When will the 2016 NFL season Article be out I Hope Next Month. 68.102.61.195 (talk) 19:59, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2016 NFL season currently redirects to Super Bowl LI because there's not enough information at this point in time to create an article about the season itself. The NFL hasn't even released the schedule, and won't until April of 2016. So I would venture to say it'll stay a redirect at least until then. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 20:35, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

But you know the article is created in years past in December So that next year's Regular Season Schedule will start on September 8, 2016 in the Super Bowl 50 Champions Home And The Regular season will end on January 1, 2017 68.102.61.195 (talk) 00:22, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What "you know" is not acceptable for Wikipedia articles. Everything should be cited to a reliable published source. If those dates have been published somewhere reliable (not just somebody's speculation) then they can go in. But if they are all that is known, there should not be an article on the subject until more information is published. ==ColinFine (talk) 01:20, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That means we have to wait 5 Months for this information About next NFL season but it might be sooner. 68.102.61.195 (talk) 01:26, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We can't do anything about that. If the information will not exist for 5 more months, Wikipedia can't invent that information out of thin air for our article! It has to exist first! There's nothing we can do about this. If you want the NFL to change how soon it starts to publish information about upcoming seasons, contact them. We can't do anything until the NFL or other reliable sources puts out the information we need to add to the article. It's not our problem... --Jayron32 15:29, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Just FYI, I've created a hatnote for the Super Bowl LI article. We get questions of this nature frequently, and hopefully the hatnote will explain why the redirect exists for now, as it could be a source of the confusion. --Jayron32 15:35, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It all depends on your reason for removing material. In your case, the reason seems to be that you are going to replace the material removed with an improved version, which is a laudable aim. It would be less controversial if you added the improvements as you removed the old section, then other editors will not get the impression that you are just removing material that you don't like. In particular, you should not remove referenced material until you can replace it with better-referenced facts. Dbfirs 22:03, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help with new article

Hello. I'm interested in nominating Lutte Internationale as a DYK article and possibly improving it to GA-class. I think the article meets DYK's basic requirements but I don't understand how the process is supposed to work. I tried contacting members of WP:PW for some advice (I assume I'm supposed to use their formatting) but never got a reply.

I was also hoping to submit a photo as part of the DYK hook. Patric Laprade, a Quebec author and wrestling historian, claims Lutte's television footage is in the public domain. [3] I'd like to add screenshots from its television show (including a DYK image) but I don't know who to ask about this either. Would it be possible to postpone DYK's 7-day time limit so I have time to look for images? 72.74.202.10 (talk) 00:15, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks. I really appreciate the assistance. 72.74.202.10 (talk) 00:33, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As for the images, I think that a statement on a forum to the effect that "All footage from IW is free to use, since the company went bankrupt and nothing was kept as far as master tapes" would not be acceptable as far as Wikipedia is concerned. If a company goes into liquidation, its material assets are not generally destroyed, but are realised as far as possible, to satisfy the creditors: as far as I know, this applies equally to intellectual property such as copyright. So I would expect that copyright survives, even though there may be nobody with an interest in protecting it. And even if I am wrong about this, I'm sure Wikipedia would require a more authoritative source than a comment in a forum. --ColinFine (talk) 00:56, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
ColinFine is correct. The claim that bankruptcy invalidates a copyright is completely false. but even if it were true, a post on a forum board would not in any way be acceptable proof. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 01:36, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If you have information that should be added or corrected, go to Talk: Fairfield Presbyterian Church. Robert McClenon (talk) 03:55, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have had a similar problem with the Captcha. Whether I type it in wrong or right, it still gives me another one to try, as if I had got it wrong (or maybe it thinks I enjoy doing them). Maproom (talk) 08:21, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Pastor Mike Schuelke: You are also triggering an edit filter. I'm not sure of the sequence of events if you both add an external link and trigger a filter with a new account. Try an edit which doesn't add an external link or only adds an external link. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:18, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Watch users' edits

Is there any way to watch a user's edits? —Skyllfully (talk | contribs) 04:45, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

If you are on a user's user page or the user's talk page, you can view their User Contributions. However, why do you want to "watch" another user's edits? If you think that they are a good editor, and you want to learn from them, mentorship might be appropriate. Do you think that they are a bad editor, and that their edits need reverting? If so, read the hounding policy first, and follow the principle of assume good faith. Robert McClenon (talk) 13:48, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You cannot do it on your watchlist. If you want to "watch" multiple users without checking each of their contributions pages then you could make a userspace page with code like this for each user: Skyllfully:. It displays:

Skyllfully:

"Skyllfully" is not registered on this wiki. Please check CentralAuth to see if it is registered on other wikis.

No changes were found matching these criteria.

It shows the most recent edit (limit can be increased). It doesn't work to put the userspace page on your watchlist. The page must be examined to look for recent time stamps. Contents may be cached. Purge can be added to make a purge link. Userspace pages are public so others can see who you "watch" unless you keep the source offline and only preview it. I often get notices that say: X was lInked from Y See all links to this page. But when I go to the links page I find no link from Y to X, and searching the history of Y does not provide an explanation. Can anyone speculate how this happens? via a transcluded template? -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 15:05, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know where you looked in the history, but before this large deletion yesterday you will see this version, which includes the link to which you refer. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:08, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, added in [4] yesterday. I don't have "Page link" enabled at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo. Doesn't the notification have a "View changes" link? PrimeHunter (talk) 15:22, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata discrepancy?

Several Wikipedias have articles discussing various US states' legal definitions of "village". Ours, for example, is located at Village (United States), while the German equivalent is de:Village (Vereinigte Staaten). The latter article has Wikidata-provided links (through d:Q751708) to the English article, as well as comparable pages in Arabic, Italian, Japanese, and Romanian. All of the foreign-language articles have correct links to the rest — but English has none at all. Why are the babel links missing from our article? Nyttend (talk) 16:41, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know why the interlanguage links and the "Wikidata item" link were missing but a purge fixed it. For some reason the page was apparently unaware of the Wikidata item when it was last rendered. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:47, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Having issues SAVING page after making minor changes

Good morning,

Working to create a biographical page for KIM WOOD SANDUSKY (vocal coach/producer) in Nashville, TN, I am having trouble saving the page after my attempt to add citations for her Destiny Child's SURIVOR & OSMOSIS JONES production credits. Here is the current draft of the page in my sandbox: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:RodneyBowen66/sandbox&action=submit&veaction=edit

After I make the updates, I click save and then a CAPTCHA appears. After entering the captcha numerous times, the page still will not save.

Please help. thanks so much! Rodney Bowen — Preceding unsigned comment added by RodneyBowen66 (talkcontribs) 17:10, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

When this happens, it's likely because an external link you are adding to the page in question is listed on Wikipedia's Wikipedia:Spam blacklist, which is designed to prevent abuse of Wikipedia. Please check that your external links are reliable sources as defined by Wikipedia. --Jayron32 17:14, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's the third such report I see today so I wonder whether there really is a software issue in some circumstances. I made a test [5] with an alternative account which has to enter a captcha for external links. It worked fine the first time. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:29, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
