A barnstar for you!

The Barnstar of Diligence
Your diligence at the Teahouse is deserving of something better than a Barnstar. Thank you for your diligence, you have been an inspiration to all of us. Celestina007 (talk) 17:36, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Celestina007 Thank you. You are too kind. In fact I think you deserve a Barnstar for your own contributions far more than I do. Please keep it up - I love seeing you helping people in the way that you do! Nick Moyes (talk) 23:45, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Blaze was typically brief in their reply"

Hey! I noticed that you said this in a reply to a user on Teahouse. Don't worry I'm not here to say "How dare you insult me!" because I actually kinda like that. I don't really mean to be brief honestly, it's just kinda how I work. I'm straightforward and give the answer to the question they asked without going too much into detail (unless I find it necessary as I don't want to bore the new user). If you'd prefer I'd give more detail in the future I can certainly do my best to improve on this. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 03:11, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Blaze. I'm glad you didn't take it as an insult, as it was really just an observation on some of the replies I've seen from you. Yes, yours can be a bit short, and not as directly welcoming as we might normally hope to give for the first reply to someone. But it's not a complaint. (If you can manage to squeeze in a "hello and welcome" that'd save the next person doing it for you, as it's one of the things most of try to add in to make us come across as friendly as possible to newcomers. But, by contrast, I know I tend to be quite a bit verbose in some of my replies! I try to remember that the person asking the question is probably lost and floundering, and knows far less than we do. So encouraging and helping them with functioning links and explanations should make it seem less impersonal. Keep up the good work! Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 17:56, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Blaze The Wolf, Nick is being modest, at the Teahouse if you are a host (are you officially a host?) if yes, then addressing a newcomer with “Hello and welcome to the Teahouse” is in my opinion your obligation and compulsory, even if you aren’t an official host you ought to still say “hello and welcome to the Teahouse” a hurried response doesn’t convey, nor show a “welcoming environment” Verbose is better than a hurried response. Celestina007 (talk) 18:41, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Celestina007: I'm not officially a host (still working on making my answers better and get more experienced before I become one), and I used to say something similar to that but for whatever reason I simply just stopped doing it. I will try and remember to start doing it again in the future though as I do agree it makes the teahouse seem more welcoming to new users. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 18:45, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Blaze The Wolf, great then. Celestina007 (talk) 18:48, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers both - you two contribute really well to making the Teahouse a great place to help people. Nick Moyes (talk) 21:25, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on 2019 MotoGP eSports Championship requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from the article namespace to a different namespace except the Category, Template, Wikipedia, Help, or Portal namespaces.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Seeking help to fix seriously misleading entry

Happy to abandon my username and ability to edit. Haven't got enough time to learn all the Wiki ins and outs. Want to know how to get info to a sensible editor to unscramble confusion about the Speyside Way official website which is at https://www.speysideway.co.uk but I do have a connection with that site so it shouldn't be me, I now realise.

However it is indeed the official website and the .org one featured in your entry is a plausible-looking ripoff site (long history but plenty of independent verification is available). What is best way forward please? ≈≈≈≈ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Speysideway (talkcontribs) 17:14, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Speysideway That was quick! Sure - I'll try and help, but it will still need you putting in the time to break down each issue as you see it into some sort of bulleted list. By clearly highlighting what's wrong, and suggesting an exact form of words/betting citation link to replace it with, it makes the task of fixing things so much easier. Barring the logo, at first sight the Wikipedia article looks OK.
But there's help at hand by making a formal 'edit request' on the article's talk page. There is guidance at Wikipedia:Edit requests and if you're not sure how to see it through, you can drop your list of points you'd like addressing on my talk page first, and I'll try and go through and sort it out for you, if I'm able. Meanwhile don't panic if one of my fellow admins 'soft blocks' your page as a shared account - this happens a lot and is easily sorted. You're not prevented from making a new account with a better name as I suggested, should that happen. Just make sure you leave a note on that new userpage to explain your connection and editing interest. Hoping this all makes sense. Are you OK with replacing the new logo yourself? Nick Moyes (talk) 17:39, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Edit requested: please amend (or ask a suitable editor to amend) https://www.speysideway.org to read https://www.speysideway.co.uk and if possible also amend the logo to match the one used on the true official site

Is it uncontroversial? Probably not - the site https://www.speysideway.org has for many years passed itself off as official and this was easy to do, given that the official (Moray Council-backed and National Park-backed) website was very dated and difficult for Council employees to update. The rogue site looked plausible and appeared more updated so it rose up the rankings easily.

Is the request necessary? In my view yes, because (at effectively cost price) I have helped Moray Council to develop the new, responsive and updatable website, therefore I'd see a conflict of interest if editing it myself (but I've only just learned the first stages of the Wiki protocol, sorry).

Is it sensible? Yes.

Evidence that confirms the official status of the site https://www.speysideway.co.uk can be found at many authoritative websites, e.g. https://www.scotlandsgreattrails.com/trail/speyside-way/ https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/uswalks/speysideway/index.html https://www.ldwa.org.uk/ldp/members/show_path.php?path_name=Speyside+Way and dozens of others, plus a few books that I can pass on refs to, published by various established guidebook publishers.

I do apologise for having accidentally having gone about this in what now appears to have been the wrong way. I'm also struggling with the interface (currently I have 11 Wikipedia windows open and only found out how to respond to you thanks to Tenryuu‬.

Truly I've no desire to edit Wiki entries, but I would like the Wiki entry on Speyside Way to be more accurate. Please help if you can, many thanks ≈≈≈≈ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Speysideway (talkcontribs) 18:16, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Speysideway Thanks for this. Various points I can make:
  • It looks like you've already fixed the .org.uk to the correct .co.uk address.
  • The correct website could benefit from a note to explain it is the correct one, or to ring the staff numbers if in doubt. (I note the fake site does not offer valid contact details)
  • The link from https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/uswalks/speysideway/index.html shows the .org address, but links to the .co.uk address. You could benefit by seeking to get that fixed.
  • Even worse: https://www.scotlandsgreattrails.com/trail/speyside-way/ links to the 'official' website's at https://www.speysideway.org/public-transport/
  • But, as a retired local govt employee I trust .gov.uk websites, so the best link to have given me was the link from http://www.moray.gov.uk/moray_services/page_40302.html which confirmed it as valid.
  • So, apart from updating the new logo is there anything else that you would request to be changed?
  • I tried, but failed, to take the new Speyside Way logo to upload from the official website. It's not sufficiently large for me to fill the transparent background to white without pixellation leaving horrid black edges, and my attempt to overwrite it did not improve things.
  • I recommend that you find a suitable image with a white background from within your team and upload it yourself. This is the one area where the organisation itself is well placed to upload an image they own. Providing you don't try to upload it to Commons, you don't have to release it under a CC-BY-SA licence unless you really want to. But I think something around 15-25kB should be acceptable size for non-free use.
I hope this has addressed all the points. Let me know if I can help further. Nick Moyes (talk) 21:56, 21 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

SSW website update and response

Massive thanks for that thorough set of bullets, Nick: clearly you work fast and smart and have impressive credentials. Responses after ::: to make them show:

It looks like you've already fixed the .org.uk to the correct .co.uk address.

Yes, I did that yesterday morning before I knew I'd stumbled in using an inappropriate username and was not the best person to be fixing it because of possible COI. So I concluded that it might be reverted by the people behind the rogue site and am hoping that by briefing you properly we may resist any such reversion

The correct website could benefit from a note to explain it is the correct one, or to ring the staff numbers if in doubt. (I note the fake site does not offer valid contact details)

Agreed and added to both About sections this morning, but am hoping that the rogue site will gradually fade down the rankings, especially now that Wikipedia no longer points to it. Further advice very welcome, but don't want to impose.

The link from https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/uswalks/speysideway/index.html shows the .org address, but links to the .co.uk address. You could benefit by seeking to get that fixed.

Well spotted! I've emailed them again and will be disappointed if not fixed by lunchtime! [Just checked and it's done, they apologise.]

Even worse: https://www.scotlandsgreattrails.com/trail/speyside-way/ links to the 'official' website's at https://www.speysideway.org/public-transport/

AAAAAAAAAAARGH what a total howler, all my fault!! That dates from the time when even I was confused by the rogue site, I am totally mortified by that, but it was fixed before 8 am today. Thanks so much for spotting that one.

the best link to have given me was the link from http://www.moray.gov.uk/moray_services/page_40302.html which confirmed it as valid.

haven't seen that page before, did you use a clever reverse search? Actually it contains some dubious info so I'll email Moray about it

About the logo, I will obtain a better version and try to follow instructions to upload it only to English Wikipedia (not Wikimedia Commons) under a non-free use licence. I did embark on the Wikimedia Commons route but baulked at the rights issue. Once you had told me my username was non-compliant I stopped all editing activity but am I OK to carry on just for this upload?

Just FYI I am a guidebook publisher (Rucksack Readers) with about 40+ guidebooks mainly to long-distance routes in the UK and Ireland (mainly walking, some cyclable). If you'd like to choose any one and send your postal address I'd be delighted to send one as a small thankyou for your help. About COI, I manage the SGT website but it's not-for-profit and the Moray Council contract was paid – after a fashion (extremely low-cost, I offered to do it because so mortified by the awfulness of its predecessor at .co.uk).

Finally I'm guessing you are the same Nick Moyes that did the brilliant peregrine project with Derby Cathedral? If so, you may wish to know that the links that are broadcast by LinkedIn with your entry (https://www.derby.gov.uk/peregrines and https://www.derby.gov.uk/flora) don't work any more (404), Derby has probably reorganised its website since you set them up. And if you aren't that Nick Moyes then sorry and please ignore me. With all you do for Wiki I'm surprised you have time for consultancy! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Speysideway (talkcontribs) 10:06, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Speysideway Well done for fixing the links so quickly. Finding the Moray link was a simple one. As your non-fake website has the emails and contact names of Moray Council staff, it was logical to go to their website and use their search facility to find pages on the Speyside Way. I'd thought of contacting the trail's Visitor Centre to confirm the co.uk address was correct, but found it is now closed. Contacting VisitScotland seemed unnecessary.
Thanks for spotting my own out of date links. Touché! I'd rather forgotten about LinkedIn. I've fixed a few of them. Yes, that was indeed me you unearthed, although I mostly retired and stopped pushing my consultancy work a couple of years ago, and just dabble now for the fun of it. Thanks for your very kind offer, though I'm just happy to help out. I'll reply shortly to your other post below. Nick Moyes (talk) 13:26, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to bother you again, but I can't get back to a link where you mentioned how and where I should upload the logo which you correctly guessed is not suited to a CC licence and belongs jointly to Moray Council/Rucksack Readers. I am game to have a go, although it would be vastly preferable for me (and conceivably quicker for you than walking me through how to do something that I'll never do again?) if instead I could send you the file somehow? Although small file, it's a scalable vector and we've sorted out giving it a white background and can do a larger one if you need it. Please LMK how to proceed, many thanks.

My intention is to abandon any activity as user speysideway or indeed anything else but perhaps I don't need to actively delete it? ≈≈≈≈ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Speysideway (talkcontribs) 13:00, 22 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Speysideway The original file is here. Just look for the link at the bottom of the 'File History' section to 'Upload a new version of this file'. That should simply let you replace the file (though it partially accepted my upload attempt, but hasn't let it display - possibly because it is far too small. Of course, you can also upload a completely new file with a different name, say Speyside_Way_logo 2021.jpg, as appropriate. If all else fails, you can let me know and email it to me. (I'll send you my details via an internal Wikipedia email which will reveal my home contact address to you, but not show it online to anyone)
I took a look at the range of guidebooks you've published. They look really nice. I'd always half-fancied producing a walks guide to my county myself, and the one thing I'd definitely do is place directional instructions in boldface within the rest of the text for ease of seeing the key instructions whilst 'on the hoof'. I rather liked your Arran Coast Guide as I guess we've done parts of it in years gone by. (In fact, we're still waiting for a postcard to arrive that we sent my mum back in 1999 from outside Brodick Post Office!). As a result of seeing the sample page 44 of that guide, I've ended up updated the article on Hutton's Unconformity. Maybe, if you could persuade the copyright holder of the picture of the marker stone to release and upload it to Wikimedia Commons, it could make a great addition, not least to c:Category:Hutton's Unconformity at Isle of Arran. And, as even more of an aside, have you heard of QRpedia codes? They allow you to embed a QR code into a publication which, when scanned, determines the language setting of the phone and takes you to the appropriate Wikipedia article in that language - or to English by default if there is no such article in that particular language. Thus, a Spanish user of that publication would be taken to this Spanish article, whilst a French reader and and English reader would both be taken to the English language version. At least, until such time as someone writes about that topic in French. It's the kind of thing that, with judicious use, could add to any guidebook - at least in my view. My sandbox

@Nick Moyes Hi, I saw that you made an edit in my sandbox, [4]. Thanks for the edit. Could you possibly explain, how you did it. I copied the same template, but it came as normal text. But yours came as it should look. What excess thing did you do. I would be glad , if you can teach me the process. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 04:06, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Itcouldbepossible Ok. I’ve just got up and am only on a mobile right now. I’ll reply to all your questions later in the day when I’ve access to a keyboard. For this or make sure you’re using source editor. If you don’t see the ‘edit source’ tab, you can change things in Preferences so ‘’both’’ editing tools are offered to you. But you can always always switch between them via the black peril icon shown in the upper right side of the editing window. Let me know when you have understood and practiced both these tips. Nick Moyes (talk) 08:08, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nick Moyes Ok thank you, you can reply to all my messages later. But if would be better if you explain me in a more detailed manner. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 08:45, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nick Moyes And one more thing, while you write something to me, please use the ping command, because I might on be watching each and every page. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 09:53, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You don't need to ping me on my own user page - I automatically get notified. But I will certainly ping you from multiple threads as I work through your questions (which is going to take some time and won't be done in one go). Another tip: If you find complex advice helpful, you could always think about making another sandbox page just for table advice, and either link to the diff that it was given, or copy/paste the reply into your sandbox page, and split it up into different headings. If you do the latter, strip out the persons signature - or at the very least the date/time stamp, but make an edit summary crediting them when you copy it into your sandbox. This is called 'attribution' and helps credit other peoples work. Nick Moyes (talk) 09:58, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes no problem, you can take your time and answer my questions. It is just more than enough for me that you are answering my questions. I created a page called User:Itcouldbepossible/Sandbox Tables and it is here [5]. Please explain me what you mean by If you find complex advice helpful, you could always think about making another sandbox page just for table advice, and either link to the diff that it was given, or copy/paste the reply into your sandbox page, and split it up into different headings. If you do the latter, strip out the persons signature - or at the very least the date/time stamp, but make an edit summary crediting them when you copy it into your sandbox. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 11:37, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Itcouldbepossible I'm not sure which bit you got confused by. Sorry. You've made the sandbox table, so that's great. A WP:DIFF is a unique url that lets you see one edit, and then view the entire page up to that pint on which it was made. Like this one of mine.
But I don't find that as helpful as actually copying in what another editor said. If it was part of a discussion you're copying, you should leave out the date/time stamp or else later on someone will think that person actually wrote that on your talk page/sandbox, or wherever. They didn't, so leaving it in would be misleading to other people. That's why just a credit to them and the source in an edit summary, or as plan text in a page can be helpful.
Now, I think I can't answer any more questions today. I've fixed the two links in rows 15 and 16 of my own sandbox to show you two types of linking. I see your own sandbox table has a faulty link. You've used double square brackets (which is for internal links) but have put them around what is an external link with a full http: url. A single bracket would have worked, though as I said earlier, we don't pout external links in tables (even to other wikipedia pages).
I can do no more than ask you to read Help:Link and maybe experiment in your sandbox with links of various types. If it goes wrong, just analyse the code in source editor until you figure it out. Best wishes for now, Nick Moyes (talk) 12:09, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nick Moyes No NO, please don't over stress yourself for answering all my foolish questions. I know precisely what a diff is, but could not figure out that you said, though I understand it now. You wanted me to link the diff page and tell you that I have created a page - right? And you also gave an option to copy the discussion to one of my sandboxes, and remove the signatures and timestamps and give credit from where I copied it from. Right? I hope I understand you now. Also thank you for explaining me the difference between internal links, and external links. I now know that I have to use only "[]" for external links and "[[]]" for internal links. That is isn't it??? I will obviously read Help:Link, and thanks again for helping me so much. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 13:11, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Itcouldbepossible Yep - that's about it, though you don't actually need to tell the other person if you're copying their posts because you find them useful. One simple way is to use an edit summary when you do. By including their user name in square brackets like User:Itcouldbepossible you automatically send them a notification. So an edit summary like "copying helpful reply from insert username here to my sandbox for future use" would notify them and credit their work sufficiently. I think you're getting it with the links now. One thing to say, finally, is that I'm still learning here. That's what I find so amazing about the place: it is both elegant and highly complicated at one and the same time. And none of your questions have been foolish, which is why I was happy to help you. I found them both technical and interesting. By helping others I also learn a lot, too. Nick Moyes (talk) 13:18, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nick Moyes Thank you, thank you again for clarifying that what I have understood is correct. No, I meant that 'give credit' in my reply means that I would write in the edit summary where and whose reply I have copied for further reference. And yes I am getting the Wiki links correctly, and you know that there was a coincidence. I had figured out how to mask the link of my talk page with "Itcouldbepossibly" before David Biddulph gave me the solution. And then I saw that you had already answered it much before.
And one more thing, I don't think I need to create separate sub pages for the replies that I think are helpful, since after a few days, the Lowercase Sigmabot III will archive the discussion, and the muninn bot will leave a link to my talk page. What do you say? Waiting for your valuable reply. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 13:51, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Itcouldbepossible It's entirely up to you - mine was just a suggestion as I have found doing things that way is quite useful. But relying on links to archived threads is also just as sensible. Nick Moyes (talk) 17:09, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nick Moyes Thanks for the suggestion. For the time being please look here. Why cannnot I make seperate headings for the three archival messages. One already has a "==" heading but for the others I added "==" but those are not coming separately. Please tell me the way of doing it. Itcouldbepossible (talk) 02:49, 25 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

List of best-selling manga (someone changes it even though sources say opposite)

Hello I read both Naruto & Detective Conan sources in the list. Naruto Shueisha (official publisher) source says it has "sold" 250 million copies, Detective Conan one says "it has 250 million copies in circulation worldwide (including copies not sold)" Naruto should be above as of now. But User:Yujoong changing the order. He first removed Mangaplus/Shueisha source (most reliable source) Now both User:Yujoong and Creating User:Cosmo Sentinel changing the order everyday as they want. Can you prevent or warn them ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ruderhymer (talkcontribs) 12:20, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I have no interest in these topics, though you do appear to be WP:EDITWARRING, which is a blockable offense if it continues. Rather than post the same request on multiple administrators' pages, discuss content matters on the article talk page, or take your concerns of editor misbehaviour to WP:ANI. Be advised that your own editing behaviour will be scrutinised just as closely as anyone else. Thank you. Nick Moyes (talk) 14:19, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Serial comma edit warrior

Hi Nick, A couple of days ago you blocked the IP 2600:100F:B047:FA3C:1D7E:E7C9:A259:EF4C (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) for edit warring on serial commas across several pages. The block was for 31 hours, and as soon as it lifted ... guess what? Back on the same range he's now at 2600:100F:B056:8DF5:CDAB:FDA9:2C35:1CF5 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) to do the same thing again. 2A00:23C7:2B86:9800:86F:FE39:5743:782D (talk) 10:01, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ps. I opened a talk page thread when the first set of reverts were going on, but he's ignored that entirely. 2A00:23C7:2B86:9800:86F:FE39:5743:782D (talk) 10:02, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I've block their /64 range for a week. Because your own IPv6 address repeatedly changes (which is often normal), could you link to which talk page you're referring to, please? Cheers Nick Moyes (talk) 10:21, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry - should have remembered that! They were on No Time to Die on the last revert; you'll see the thread I opened at Talk:No_Time_to_Die#Use_of_serial_commas_in_the_lead and the advice and warning I left them last time at User talk:2600:100F:B047:FA3C:1D7E:E7C9:A259:EF4C#No Time to Die. Thanks 2A00:23C7:2B86:9800:86F:FE39:5743:782D (talk) 10:31, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I'd already added that page to my watchlist for the next 3 months, but wasn't sure if it was one of the other articles you were referring to. (I also had a moment of panic as I thought I'd accidentally blocked you instead! There's something about IPv6 address that brings out the dyslexic in me, I think.) Please contact me again if you see this behaviour repeating, and I appreciate you opening the talk page thread, too. Cheers, Nick Moyes (talk) 10:36, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi Nick, what I think is the same IP is back on the same course bit on two IP addresses (both of which are geographically close) and both on pages he’s been around before. One is here and one is here, where the article was finally protected because the edit warred so much. Thanks again for your help on this. 213.205.194.4 (talk) 08:42, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

WikiProject Tables

Sorry for bothering you again. I don't know if I am sane or not, but I wanted to know if there was such a project or anything other thing called WikiProject Tables? I have now grasped the concept of tables, and love creating and modifying complex tables. Is there a place or project where I can hone this skill by modifying tables or by creating tables using the data provided? ― ItcouldbepossibleTalk 13:03, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid the nearest fit I could find is Wikipedia:WikiProject Templates, but that's still way off. Or try browsing through the archives at Help talk:Table for interesting past threads. I know there are places where people can request graphics, but I've never seen one for people seeking help with creating tables. of course, yuu could always ask at WP:VPT, I guess. I've you've done some good ones, feel free to link me to a few of them, though I'm pretty rubbish at doing anything too fancy. Cheers, NM Demo (talk) 13:44, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

AWB

Hi, Nick. I am come here for your opinion, since I find you one of the most valuable administrators of Wikipedia, and also a good decision taker. Do you think, that I will be able to handle the auto wiki browser? I mean depending on my position, will I be capable of handling the Auto Wiki Browser? Seeking your valuable suggestion. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 11:34, 28 December 2021 (UTC) I have already read WP:AWB/MAN and all its related documentation.[reply]

@Itcouldbepossible That depends what you want to use it to do. You would need to explain your need.
I had it installed on my previous PC before I became an admin, but don't have it now. It was scarily powerful, and hard to understand. I only used it for mass-fixing of common typos like accomodation->accommodation, and wouldn't (and probably still wouldn't today) feel I knew enough to use most of the very powerful tools it has to offer. It's hard to say whether I'd recommend it to you at this point in time. On balance, I'd say that you're still seem to be on too much of a learning curve and probably don't need it. It's not a right I'd imagine any admin giving if it was purely to experiment with, and would suggest you first read WP:ENGVAR and then visit WP:TYPO if you wanted it for helping out fixing spelling matters. Nick Moyes (talk) 11:57, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I am going to use it to make categorizing edits, and sort of tedious spelling errors. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 12:09, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Just Another Rev Del Request

Hi Nick. Would you please delete this revision. It is not a vandalism. It is true, but a political edit. It was used by one of the competing prime ministers of India to acknowledge the current minister. You can search by the particular phrase on google for verification. Thanks ItcouldbepossibleTalk 14:32, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't feel that needs revdel-ing. It's been removed from the article and the translation I get is not sufficiently offensive or revealing to merit it. But let me know if I've misunderstood anything. Nick Moyes (talk) 15:40, 29 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please take the right decision after reading this page. Thanks. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 05:55, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks. I’ve read the article on that political slogan, which you’ve asked me to revdel. I stand by my view (admittedly from a different cultural background) that it does not meet criterion 2 of WP:REVDEL. The fact that the edit was removed from the page seems sufficient, and the article on the slogan did not indicate any wider offence caused to a particular ethnic group or religion. Sorry Nick Moyes (talk) 09:43, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I decided to give you a barnstar for you, but as I scrolled through the various options, none of them really applied to this situation, so I just gave you an original. Saulo Oliveira S. again

The creating editor pulled a nasty trick at the AfD for Saulo Oliveira S.. By removing the period after the S in the article title in the AfD notice, all of the AfD vanished, and the creating editor replaced it with a plea to not delete the article. I reverted this, and warned the editor on Talk page that this could lead to an indefinite block and the topic being 'salted.' I have seen editors delete AfD notices, but that shows up in the AfD View history. By changing the name of the article inside the AfD, the AfD View history content vanished. Only after I reverted the change to the article itself did the AfD content reappear. David notMD (talk) 23:18, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Removal of false, libelous, and retracted reference

After becoming more familiar with Wikipedia policies I understand the reasons for your concerns and undoing my edits. I certainly had no intention of creating an edit war. The intention is to remove defamatory content which was discredited and the false claims acknowledged and reversed in writing by the perpetrator. The newspaper article containing the false and defamatory content was linked to multiple Wikipedia subjects. I will gladly locate and provide the substantiating references and documentation to support the need for my edits on the pages of the affected subjects. The statement - which follows - by @ToBeFree on another Adakiko section is directly relevant here: "In most cases, when someone explicitly complains about "defamatory content", that's a good point to stop reverting and to thoroughly analyze the situation. Even if you are completely convinced that the material a) qualifies for inclusion in the article (WP:UNDUE may be a concern), and b) is completely perfectly verifiable: Even then, we should wonder whether it's really worth insisting on keeping the material." Thank you for your attention to this matter CineMG (talk) 02:55, 19 January 2022 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by CineMG (talkcontribs)

@CineMG: I see nothing libellous in that source that would affect Wikipedia reporting the news article. Even if the claim were proven false, the fact that such a claim was made could, in itself, be relevant to the topic. We might simply deem it relevant to then state that the claim was subsequently shown to be false. The issue for us editors would then be to decide if the whole story is relevant to our encyclopaedia.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to cite evidence that person x's claim was subsequently proven incorrect. Even so, claims of libel action can still be reported here (with due care over wording) where those claims, counter-claims, law suits and punishments are relevant to the subject of the article.
What we don't do is censor content because you don't happen to like seeing it, or are kicking up a fuss with nothing to back up your disruptive actions. You need to work with us, not against us, if your desire is to see balance and factual accuracy. BTW: If you have a Conflct of Interest in this matter, you need to declare it on your userpage. Hi Nick, just wanted to thank you for creating WP:ERB. @S0091 That’s very kind of you to say that. I did wonder whether the page with its amateurish video was irrelevant, now that Sdkb, Moxy and others had invested a lot of time in improving WP:REFBEGIN. But glad to know it still has its uses. BTW: I’ve been forcing myself to use WP:VE recently and have only just discovered how wonderfully easy it is to modify and add new fields to an existing inline citation- something Source Editor can’t do. New Category

Hi again. I am thinking of creating a category titled as Category:Alumni of Zurich University, and thought of asking you first, since the last time I created a category in a haste, I got into a lot of trouble. Many notable alumni should be in that category. So, please suggest me the right thing. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 09:14, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your question surprised me as I felt such a category ought to exist already. Sure enough, it does, albeit worded slightly differently. It’s really important to check thoroughly before making a new category. I’m not going to tell you the right answer as it’s a better learning experience to discover some things for yourself. But please pop back and tell me if you’re successful, or if you need further help to find the answer. Nick Moyes (talk) 09:56, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha, finally got it. The category is Category:University of Zurich alumni. But how did you know that such a category already exists. Though I know that you are really experienced, and know a lot, but still, how can one know everything and every category that is there? Please clarify this doubt of mine. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 11:36, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Itcouldbepossible OK - it's actually quite simple. Categories are part of a hierarchy - like roots of a tree spreading down into the ground, getting smaller and smaller as they go, splitting into finer categories. So you feel you need a new sub-category? Then go to a related article - or one higher up - and see what categories are used there. They're shown at the bottom of the page.
Thus University of Zurich is in Category:University of Zurich. Visit that category and see what sub-categories are already there.
That reveals Category:People associated with the University of Zurich - ah- looking hopeful now!
The sub-category list at that page shows Category:University of Zurich alumni already there, so now you can pop it in.
Another way is sometimes to go to the page of an alumnus you know about and look at what has been placed there. But that is not always reliable. Hope this helps Nick Moyes (talk) 12:00, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks but I have some more things to ask you. First of all, am I allowed to contribute to other language wikipedias, along side the English Wikipedia? Is that allowed? I don't know how they know me, but administrators of the Bengali wikipedia, are begging me to contribute there. So, should I say "yes"? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 06:33, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have also created a bot password, but cannot use it, can you tell me how to use it? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 05:48, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don’t know what you mean. You have an authorised bot? I have no experience of that I’m afraid. Sorry I cannot advise you. Nick Moyes (talk) 09:12, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No, actually I have created a bot password from Special:BotPasswords. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 09:16, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've not seen that page before. However, I recognise my quite old password used when I had access to WP:AWB, which I've not needed to run for a few years. Have you requested access to such a tool? if so, that might be why you're seeing something there. But if you haven't, then simply ignore it. I would! If you're still unsure, I'd suggest asking at WP:HD. Cheers, Nick Moyes (talk) 11:52, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 12:35, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Administrator Barnstar

The Administrator Barnstar
I hereby award thee the Administrator Barnstar. You are truly one of the best and nicest administrators I've come across. You are definitely a great Teahouse host too. Thank you for all your contributions and help to make Wikipedia better! We need more Wikipedians like you. Keep up the good work! ― Kaleeb18TalkCaleb 01:09, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kaleeb18 Thank you most kindly. Like everyone, I do have my grumpy moments, but I try to keep them to a minimum and help as many people as I can. It's appreciated. Nick Moyes (talk) 01:12, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I dont doubt you have some grumpy moments like all of use of course, but you do a good job at keeping it to a minimum. You totally deserve this barnstar. ― Kaleeb18TalkCaleb 01:38, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Declined AIV report

You were right to decline this, but it wasn't so much an insufficient warning as a stale one ... the last warning of any level was a week old. You can use "ow" in the AIV template followed by another pipe and the time to indicate this ... it would have saved you some time typing what you typed. Daniel Case (talk) 20:39, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Daniel Case Thanks. I tend to try to communicate with the reporter to explain why their report was declined so they don't repeat the mistake and waste everyone's time. I think I focussed more on the low level caution than on its staleness (which I'd not spotted). I guess either/both are valid reasons to decline. Nick Moyes (talk) 20:42, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Both are, IMO. But sometimes when I see a user recently reported with a first- or second-level who's already had several final warnings amid many warnings over a long period, I think it's time to block. They knew what they were doing and kept right on doing it. Daniel Case (talk) 20:45, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

UrMom1000

Hi, UrMom1000 has edited. However, this user has not changed his username yet, and users may shortly bring attention to it. What actions need to be taken? Severestorm28 00:10, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem. I've repeated my request. This is borderline offensive, yet a name change is for their own good. Nick Moyes (talk) 00:17, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Joseph Vallot

On 28 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Joseph Vallot, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that in 1887, after spending three nights on the summit of Mont Blanc, scientist Joseph Vallot and his party were greeted with flowers by the mayor and all the inhabitants of Chamonix? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Joseph Vallot. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Joseph Vallot), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Two minds ...

.. with but a single thought. Sorry about that – didn't mean to step on your toes (well, on your heels really, as you got there first). Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 22:27, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Justlettersandnumbers No worries. I've done that too. Just a passing question: what would have been involved for that account to have been "created automatically". It had clearly edited, so what does that actually mean in practice? Nick Moyes (talk) 22:41, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I really don't know for sure. I've always assumed that it meant that the user had actually created his/her account on some other project. This account shows as automatically created on Commons too, so my guess is that it has deleted contribs somewhere else too. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:51, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just glanced at Help:Unified login, seems roughly to confirm the above, but not the details. Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:55, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. Don’t worry. I’ll check my email later - I don’t have it on my phone right now. Nick Moyes (talk) 09:17, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Itcouldbepossible I've seen your message - there's nothing to be concerned about. I would prefer to reply to you here, mentioning no specifics, or do a TPS reply elsewhere. Is either OK? Nick Moyes (talk) 11:10, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, what is TPS? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 11:11, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
WP:TPS Nick Moyes (talk) 11:12, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Would you mail me, if you won't mind. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 11:14, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Because I am a little scared about this matter. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 11:14, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There's no issue to worry about. You're doing fine. I don't really wish to use my email address. So it'll take me some time to fire up my false account later today - it will not appear as my name. I'm unlikely to send multiple messages -just one reassuring one. Nick Moyes (talk) 11:32, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok now problem, but just let me know if you do something. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 11:43, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Itcouldbepossible I have now replied to you off-wiki, but have closed my email down. I am unlikely to respond to any follow-up email by the same route unless it is critically important. Stick to on-wiki unless essential, please. Nick Moyes (talk) 20:27, 1 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi ya

thanks for asking good questions here. I appreciate your volunteer efforts! I clarified my question, can you help me please?
