North South University (Bengali: নর্থসাউথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) or NSU is the first private university in Dhaka, Bangladesh^[1] ^[2] established in 1992 under the Private University Act 1992.^[3] The institution is considered as the largest and most elite private university in the country. The university offers a number of undergraduate and Masters degrees in the fields of Business Administration, Computer Science, Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering, Life Sciences, Pharmacy, Environmental Management, Economics, English, Architecture, etc. It also offers several courses for general and continuing education. About 7000 students are currently enrolled at North South University. In its 2007 Convocation Ceremony, 518 students were awarded degrees in undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed, President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh is the Chancellor of the university. Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqi is serving as Vice Chancellor. NSU currently has 146 full-time and 75 part-time faculty members, all of whom, as a requirement, posess postgraduate qualifications from abroad, most of them from the United States, United Kingdom and Canada. A number of professors and lecturers from noted public universities such as University of Dhaka and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology serve as part-time faculty members at North South University.

History

North South University (NSU), the first private university in Bangladesh, was established by a group of philanthropists, industrialists, bureaucrats and academics. The government of people's Republic of Bangladesh approved the establishment of North South University in 1992 under Private University Act (PUA) 1992. The university was formally inaugurated on 10th February 1993 by Begum Khaleda Zia, the then Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The honorable President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh is the Chancellor of NSU.

The first cohort of freshman intake of January 1993 had 137 students enrolled in three Departments: Business Administration, Computer Science, and Economics. Departments of Environmental Studies (DES), English and General and Continuing Education (GCE) were founded later. The Masters Program in Economics was introduced in 1994. The MBA Program was launched in Summer 1997. Masters in Development Studies and Bachelor in Computer Engineering were introduced in 2002. MS in Computer Science has been introduced from Summer 2003. Bachelor in Architecture was introduced in FaIl 2004. Masters in English was launched in Spring 2005. Pharmacy (Undergraduate) and Executive MBA (EMBA) program launched in Spring 2006 and Masters in Biotechnology and Masters in Public Health program launched in Summer 2006. BS in Biotechnology, BS in Microbiology and BS in Biochemistry programs were introduced in Spring 2007.

Academic programs

The University offers undergraduate education in several disciplines such as Business Administration, Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Pharmacy, Architecture, Microbiology, Economics, English and Environmental Studies. Administration

President of the Republic of Bangladesh, currently Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed is ex-officio Chancellor of the university. The Vice Chancellor, currently Dr. Hafiz G.A. Siddiqui is the Chief Executive of the University. Each school at North South University has a dean whereas each academic department has a head or chair. There is also a governing body, the Board of Governors, headed by a chairperson, which overseas the operation of the university and settles matters regarding policy.

Academic system

The academic system of North South University is based on that of major universities in the United States. An academic year is divided into three sessions of terms: Spring (January-April), Summer (May-August) and Fall (September-December). Each session is twelve weeks long and there is usually a two-three week holiday between sessions. Undergraduate degrees at North South University require the completion of 125-130 credits depending on the specific program or department in question. A course is taken over one session and is usually 3 credit hours, i.e. three hours of lectures, practicals etc. per week.

Each course is assessed by the instructor through mid-terms, final exams, assignments, presentations, quizzes, etc. and is assigned a grade (A through to F) upon completion. This contributes to the Cumulative Grade Point Average or CGPA of the student and after completion of the credits required for a particular program a student is awarded a degree based on his/her CGPA. Most degrees require a research project or dissertation to be completed by the student towards the end of his/her program. For some degrees, an industrial placement/internship can be done in place of a project/dissertation.

NSU's curricula. when first introduced, were reviewed by relevant departments of University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and University of California at Berkeley, USA and duly approved by the UGC (University Grants Commission, Bangladesh). The academic programs are continually updated and adapted to meet the local needs.

Schools, departments and programs

School of Business

The school offers degrees in Business Administration having concentrations in the area of Marketing, MIS, HRM, International Business, Business Policy and Strategy, Finance and Accounting. The programs currently offered by the School of Business are:

- Executive MBA (EMBA)

School of Applied Sciences

Department of Computer Science and Engineering

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the fields of computer science, electrical engineering and telecommunications. Course in Mathematics and Physics are also taught by members of the department. The degrees offered by the department are as follows:
- Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BS in CSc.)
- Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BS in CEG)
- Bachelor of Science in Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (BS in ETE)
- Master of Science in Computer Science (MS in CSc.)

Department of Architecture

The Department of Architecture, unlike other departments, offers a professional degree in architecture which takes five years to complete.

School of Arts and Social Sciences

Department of English

The department of English offers the following undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. For MA studies, candidates may specialize in English Literature, English Language and Linguistics or TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

- Master of Arts in English (MA in Eng.)

Department of Economics

The Department of Economics offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in:

Department of General and Continuing Education

Individuals who have not participated in formal education for some time or who do not intend to become candidates for a degree may register for credits in undergraduate courses in this department as non-degree students. Applicants are admitted as non-degree students on a semester by semester basis without any obligation to continue. Such students may apply at any time for transfer to a degree program with/without the credits earned as non-degree students.

Library

North South University (NSU) Library is the first fully automated university library in Bangladesh using self-developed library management software, which supports web-based online circulation system. Its online database provides full access to all users, facilitates navigation and reservation of books and journals from distant work-stations. The users can also check their borrowing status and can reserve books for 48 hours through the Internet. The OPAC is available at http://library.northsouth.edu.

Location

NSU is located in 12 Kemal Attaturk Avenue in Banani, Dhaka. A permanent campus is being built in Bashundhara. The campus in Banani consists of five buildings. They are named Sher Tower, Lifo Tower, Star Tower, BTA Tower and GMQ Tower. The GMQ Tower was named after a late proctor of North South University. The new NSU campus is expected to be open from 2010. The new campus is a milestone for NSU and all private universities. First of its kind, this new campus promises to be the pioneer of both technology and architecture available in any private university to date.

Student activity club

North South University has various student clubs focused on different topics. For example, the Young Entrepreneurs Society (YES) is an organisation for fostering entrepreneurship. The NSU Debate Club is the first student activity club at NSU. In 2007 NSU Debating club won the bid of All Asians 2008 and got to be the first south Asian university to host this particular tournament.^{[citation needed]} AIESEC in North South University is a local chapter of AIESEC Bangladesh. NSU Shangskritik Shangathan, established in fall 1994, organises cultural programs celebrating major national events. North South University Computer Club (NSUCC) which tries to integrate the students with the ICT industry. NSUCC has been working to serve their community and this university for promoting high standards in technical, industrial, professional, public and private endeavors. NSU Wireless Forum (NSUWF) is another club hat mainly deals with Electronics and Telecommunication industry of Bangladesh. Some reknown club activies include Annual Cultural Evening (ACE), Soft Fair, TeleMpiad, Techno Fun Fair, and Club Fair among others.
