How do I publish after my article is revised???

I am working on a wikipedia page as an assignment for a class. I attempted to have to article published but had it returned. I made the revisions requested and am attempting to request publish again, but I cannot find a "publish" button like there was the first time. What do I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eden.graham (talkcontribs) 00:14, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The tv series, in 1960-70 period. There was an island where the people greeted each other saying "we are not thieves".

There was a captain who traveled with his yacht in the Pacific or Indian Ocean, He came to an island where he noticed that the people of the island were greeting each other "We are not thieves"..He was very curious about why the people were greeting each other this way. This is what he found out: In the 18th or early 19th Century, these men and women were descendant of people who were branded as convicts and condemned by the British Government for transport to New South Wales, Australia., Somehow they either survived a violent storm or commandeered the ship they were transported, came upon an island and survived.. Their crimes were petty crimes like stealing shirts, embroidery or just a few pennies. They did not consider themselves as thieves so they were greeting each other by saying "we are not thieves". This sort of greeting persisted. They survived and married and multiplied., But the fear of being discovered and be transported to New South Wales has stayed with them. The leaders of the group prevented any escape from the island lest those who escape may reveal the location of the island, subject being rediscovered and condemned again for transport to New South Wales.. Only the leaders had the knowledge of the use of a sextant and other navigation instruments.. They kept the knowledge of use of those instruments very secrect. They multiplied, they built houses and other dwellings in the architectural models of the old England.. Their language was old English. When the captain arrived with his yacht, they did not allow him to leave the island for the same fear.. But the captain was able to leave the island, convincing them there is no more fear of being transported to Australia as convicts , it was the 20th Century, and they were not considered convicts any more. This kind of story has always intrigued me that it was a possibility.. If I could find the movie I would like to see it again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.249.104.159 (talk) 03:46, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please advise.

You will be able to change the name of a page when your account has been registered for four days and you have made ten edits with it. However, before then please check out WP:TITLEFORMAT, as the usual convention here is that only the "First word is capitalised". We don't "Capitalise Every Word". This applies to section names within articles too. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:54, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Such a format is only allowed when the article title is the official proper name of the subject; such as a personal or organisation name or the title of a book, film, etc. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 08:50, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Expand Autocollapse Table

In the article, alcohol laws of New Jersey, there is a table at the bottom of the page linking to the alcohol laws of other states. It uses the Template:United States topic template which is autocollapsed. In all the other alcohol law series (e.g., alcohol laws of New York, alcohol laws of Missouri), the box is expanded. Because there are other collapsible tables in the alcohol laws of New Jersey article, the table is collapsed. How do I override the autocollapse feature, and made the table expanded even if there are other tables in the article? DavidinNJ (talk) 13:56, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can add |state=expanded inside {{United States topic. And they are known as navboxes not tables --Ushau97 (talk) 15:54, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Two revisions of the nematode article are identical, yet one shows a ref error and the other doesn't

The 11:30, April 29, 2013‎ version (the current version) of the nematode article shows a red error in the "Nematode systematics" section: "Cite error: A set of (see the help page)." But this 16:06, April 28, 2013 version does not show that error, despite having the exact same wikicode. Here is the diff. What's happening here? And how can I fix the error I'm seeing? (If this is the wrong forum for this question, I apologize, and could you direct me to where I can get some help understanding this?) – Quadell (talk) 14:00, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

correction

I Googled "Ambler Borough PA boundary" and clicked on the Wikipedia site. It said on the site that Temple University Ambler Campus is in Ambler Borough when, in fact, it is NOT. It is in Upper Dublin Township. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.225.198.232 (talk) 18:11, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You appear to be right. It looks rather as if the Borough of Ambler is smaller than what people think of as Ambler, and somebody has added the Temple University Ambler campus to the article for that reason (that article does not explicitly say what community it is in, but has an Upper Dublin Township template).
I'm not sure what is the best thing to do. As it stands, the statement is wrong; but might somebody come to the article wanting to know about Ambler, and not knowing or caring that the Borough is only part of what is referred to as Ambler? You could simply remove the sentence from the article (with a suitable edit summary); or perhaps edit it to say that it is near Ambler but not actually in the borough. It might be best to open a discussion on the talk page Talk:Ambler, Pennsylvania, and get consensus. --ColinFine (talk) 22:36, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to edit wiki page?

Hello, When I try to edit page, save it and when i get back to that page everythins is ok but when I load page after few minutes everything is gone.

I don't know what you mean by the last question. Wikipedia (at least the English Wikipedia) does not care about SEO, and if you care about it you shouldn't be at Wikipedia. The last person who reverted your edited invited you to look at de:WP:WEB. --ColinFine (talk) 22:46, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Einzelnachweise means references. It's a list of references for the content of the article. If you click the arrow ↑ next to a reference then you get to the place it's used, where the reference number is shown. References are auto-numbered by their placement in the article. Your link is not a reference and absolutely doesn't belong in a reference section. It also seems inappropriate for the much smaller weblinks section. Wikibooks

I just noticed that http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Category:Recipes could use a new template like Template:Large category TOC which doesn't seem to exist over there. I would try and fumble through it myself but don't want to break anything.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:45, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That seems completely unnecessary. There are only 2740 pages in the category, corresponding to 14 category pages. Most letters use less than a page. Template:Large category TOC would make it much harder to navigate the category when you have to scroll the TOC to get to a letter. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:19, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just tried pages in "C" and they didn't all fit, I thought they were cats.

Disambiguation page vs. set index

What's the difference between a disambiguation page and a set index? Revolution1221 (talk · email · contributions) 21:45, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am not entirely sure what you mean by a set index. Do you mean the table of contents at the top of a typical Wikipedia page? If so, whether to use a table of contents for the multiple sections and subsections or a disambiguation page depends on whether it should be one article, or multiple articles about different subjects that have the same name. Can you clarify? Robert McClenon (talk) 22:28, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Revolution (and, sort of, Robert): Does WP:SETINDEX answer your question(s)? If you still have questions after looking at that, you can come back here with more specific questions. --Floquenbeam (talk) 22:32, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's clear enough to me. Both are lists. A set index is a list of things of the same type, possibly with different names. A disambiguation page is a list of things with the same or similar names that may be of different types. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:43, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For instance, Lake Erie will take the reader to the article about one of the Great Lakes. It has a disambiguation page that lists other things with the name Lake Erie (disambiguation), which include a United States Navy cruiser. A list of United States Navy cruisers would be a set index. Thanks And Regards, S Giri — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bazarsarkar (talkcontribs) 07:03, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Changing username. Dismas|(talk) 09:17, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, Dismas, you've misunderstood what Bazarsarkar wants. They have created a draft article in their user page.
Bazarsarkar, the way to do this is to move the page, but do not do this yet: your article is not ready, and will certainly get deleted if you move it to mainspace now, because it has no references to establish notability. Please read WP:YFA and WP:CORP. However, it will reduce confusion if you first move it to a user sandbox, such as User:Bazarsarkar/Boikart (red because that does not at present exist): it will still be in your user space, but separate from your user page, which is meant to contain information about you as a Wikipedia editor. One more point: if "we" means that several people are sharing an account, please be aware that this is contrary to Wikipedia policy: please create individual accounts. --ColinFine (talk) 11:14, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Dismas misunderstood the request because it wasn't clear. However, if I understand what is being discussed, there may also be conflict of interest issues. Robert McClenon (talk) 11:47, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It wasn't clear because people new to Wikipedia often don't understand a lot of things about how Wikipedia works, in this case user pages (and promotion). Please don't bite. --ColinFine (talk) 12:52, 1 May 2013 (UTC) [reply]
Robert McClenon suggests that you may also be involved with boikart.com, I guess because your draft article says "We". If this is so, you need to read WP:Conflict of interest as well. --ColinFine (talk) 12:52, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pages can be categorized by adding . For example, if you want to add an article to Category:Living people, then you would add to the bottom of the page. Using hotcat is much easier. It can be found at the bottom of every page. To add a category, click the "(+)"-Link at the end of the category line. This will open the input box where you can enter a new category name. --Ushau97 (talk) 16:39, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not too sure where this should go, but I figure this is the best place: I've been using my watchlist a lot recently, especially after getting involved in AfD, AN/I, and such. Requesting a Class C block be blocked for vandalism

Is it possible to request that a range of IP addresses, rather than an IP address, be blocked for vandalism? There is a considerable amount of vandalism coming from multiple IP addresses in a range assigned to a school system in Florida. (Also, am I correct that if an IP address is blocked, that does not block a registered user who is logged on from the IP address? If a teacher at the school system wants to make legitimate edits to an article from her registered account, would that be permitted?) Robert McClenon (talk) 21:07, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In extreme cases, it is possible to block a range of IP addresses. There isn't a specific place to request range blocks, but you might try posting the WP:Administrator's noticeboard. A user using a blocked IP address will be blocked too unless the user requests a WP:IP block exemption. The Anonymouse (talk | contribs) 21:12, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Since vandalism is involved, WP:AIV? Ansh666 21:21, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The templates at AIV are for an IP address and for a registered user. I expect that if I were to put an asterisk in the last octet of the IP address, I would get an error. Also, if it would block the entire range including for logged-on users, it sounds like a more extreme action than is needed against middle-school vandals. If it were a vandal-bot, like Willy on Wheels, that would be different. Thank you. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:25, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
AIV is only for simple cases of obvious vandalism, and also range blocks usually require CheckUser attention since they may affect many other (potentially innocent) users. The Anonymouse (talk | contribs) 21:27, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, didn't know that, thanks. Ansh666 21:32, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That is actually false. Most rangeblocks are soft blocks which allow accounts to edit on them. -- King of 05:18, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't aware of that... thanks for the clarification. The Anonymouse (talk | contribs) 05:24, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, soft blocks are exactly what should be done when there is continuing vandalism from a school system, which will permit teachers or administrators with registered accounts to make constructive edits. Since the vandalism appears to have stopped, I won't request soft blocks unless the vandalism restarts. Robert McClenon (talk) 14:57, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Watch List: Who can have one?

Is the ability to maintain a Watch List limited to confirmed users? I created a legimitate alternate account to test the notification changes, but I can't put pages on its watch list. Do I need to wait until I have replied to the confirming email, or is something else wrong here? Robert McClenon (talk) 21:55, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

All registered users can have watchlists. What happens with the alternate account? You can see a list of all watched pages at Special:EditWatchlist. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:02, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I confirmed the alternate account, and I still can't add articles to the watch list from the page tab. I can edit the raw watch list manually, but that is a nuisance. Is there a setting that I need to set? Robert McClenon (talk) 00:20, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder whether you have changed settings in your normal account and forgotten how it works by default. Do you have a tab with a star in the new account? If yes, what happens when you click it? PrimeHunter (talk) 00:34, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is a tab with a star, and it does watch or unwatch the page. Thank you. However, how do I get a "History" and a "Watch" tab to appear at the top of the page? I did that to my main account a few years ago apparently, and I don't remember how exactly. Robert McClenon (talk) 14:01, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that the default skin was changed at some time in the past after I established my primary account. I solved the problem by changing the skin for the alternate account. Robert McClenon (talk) 20:39, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously Inaccurate (but widespread) Material

I'm currently doing research to update the article on Creagerstown. I noticed that one of the sources that the article currently cites includes the following text:

NOTE: The name of John Cramer as the founder of Creagerstown in other resources is an error.

— CREAGERSTOWN, FREDERICK CO., MD , in x, x, Audrey Shields Hancock

From what I have seen in my research, this statement is accurate. Most of the sources that I have read state that the town was Founded by John Creager; only one book source I have found at the library says John Cramer, and even that source mentions it being John Creager later on. I suspect that this book is where the error stems from as it is widely used for research about the towns in the area.

How should I handle this? Should I just treat it as though the book says John Creager, or should I note that some sources state it was John Cramer? Or would it better to just not cite that particular section of that source? I would like to use some of the other information that is on that page, but I know if someone goes back to check the source they will see the mistaken John Cramer instead of John Creager. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you. Zell Faze (talk) 12:36, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You aren't forced to cite every single source. What makes a source reliable is that its information can be trusted. Where information is demonstrably wrong (preferably with reference to other sources), that calls into direct question the reliability of that source. The whole point of "verifiability" is that something has the ability to have its truthfulness confirmed: truthfulness is a precondition for being verifiable (break apart the word: veri- from "Veritas" or truth, -ify- meaning "to make" and -able "has the ability to"). When you see "Verifiability not truth..." mantra spoken around Wikipedia, what that means is that "Truth by itself is inadequate. What matters is the ability to confirm something is true". If it isn't true, it isn't verifiable, by definition. --Jayron32 12:48, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Jayron, I am saving that brilliant explanation in my clipboard manager and I shall plagiarise it shamelessly! Thanks.--ukexpat (talk) 14:04, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect that the issue in that source is that it is a typo and is thus reliable for the remaining information in the text. Thank you for your explanation. I think then that the solution will be to omit that as a source for the name of the founder, but continue to use it as a source for other information about the town. That is the only spot that I have found that it doesn't match the other sources (except of course sources derived from it, which carry the same mistake). Thank you. John Laing disambiguation page

Hi there,

I am a PR professional (working for an external agency) representing John Laing plc and have an edit I would like to make to the "John Laing" page. The section I am looking to edit is the disambiguation page . At the moment it describes John Laing plc as a "British developer and construction company." John Laing haven't actually built anything for a number of years since they sold their building arm, and so this descriptor is no longer accurate. I would like to change this to "infrastructure asset manager and investor" as per the descriptor found at the bottom of the company's press releases (one example of this can be found here: [1]) - what is the best way of going about this?

References

I have already posted this on the "Talk" page as I understand that is the best place to start, but so far received no response.

I am keen to go about this according to the appropriate guidelines, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards Sdmpwct (talk) 12:45, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First, let me commend you for being prudent here; we ask that PR representatives and others with a conflict of interest do exactly as you are, which is to avoid directly editing the text of articles whose subjects they are directly involved with. It is quite refreshing as an experienced Wikipedia editor to see someone doing it "right". It makes it easier to help you. Now, I'd like to help, but I'm not exactly sure what sort of fixing you need doing. There's two articles here: John Laing, as you note, is a disambiguation page used to point readers to the correct article where a bunch of articles share the same or similar names. John Laing plc is the article about the specific company you represent. Do you need to change something at the John Laing plc article or just at the John Laing disambiguation page? And, most importantly, do you have reliable sources so we can verify the changes you wish to see made? If you can answer those two questions, I think we can move forward fairly easily. --Jayron32 12:55, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The place to suggest changes is on the talk page of the relevant article, so in this case Talk:John Laing. The place where you posted the message yesterday was on your own user talk page, and people interested in the John Laing article won't have seen your message there. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:24, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
... and I think that you intended to provide a reference, so I have taken the liberty of modifying your question accordingly. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:29, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you all for your help so far. The content of the actual John Laing plc page is fine, it's just the descriptor on the disambiguation page. I would like to change the description from "British develop and construction company" to "infrastructure asset manager and investor." The best reference for this would probably be the "notes to editors" at the bottom of any of their press releases. Thank you very much user:David Biddulph for including the full link above - here it is again. [1]
I will raise this on the Talk:John Laing page as suggested by user:David Biddulph. User:Jayron - does my explanation above answer your questions, and if so is Talk:John Laing still the best way of going about this?
Thanks again for your help Sdmpwct (talk) 13:56, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Why not just change the description to "British company"? That would avoid any argument about whether and how to describe its activities; or, indent it under "John Laing (businessman)" and describe it as "the company that he founded".--ukexpat (talk) 14:07, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've just implemented the recommendation of ukexpat, for a couple of reasons 1) Indenting the entry makes it clear the relationship between the person and the company. 2) Being more general seems to be better here for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the phrase "infrastructure asset manager and investor" sounds like industrial jargon bordering on technobabble, that is while to someone working for the company may understand such phrasing, the average reader will not be able to parse that description in a meaningful way. I'm pretty sure that's why the phrase "construction company" was used. Most people understand what a construction company does (A company that builds things). Most people would have a hard time understanding what an "infrastructure asset manager" does, so perhaps having a more detailed descriptor isn't overly helpful. People who search for "John Laing" when they are looking for that company should be able to find it easily on the disambiguation page, and if they read the article they can find out what the company does anyways. I hope this works. --Jayron32 15:06, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
👍 Like--ukexpat (talk) 16:00, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A small point, but you will probably have noticed that your attempt to show the reference above has merely produced [1] without showing the information or an active link. To get the information to show it needs a reflist, or (as this is a talk page) better reflist-talk as I used in my addition to your original question. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:11, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't state the class of your daughter, and it isn't really any of my business. However, it is my opinion that a student in high school should not be citing Wikipedia as a source (with some exceptions) If in middle school, it might be OK, as part of a long term plan to teach students how to write papers, but even there, it may not be a good idea. Wikipedia is a great resource, but if your daughter found something useful inGiant panda, she should be looking for the reference, reviewing that to make sure the facts are valid, and then using the reference as her source. the reference should have a date on it. In the rara cases that a reference to Wikipedia is valid (such as an article about Wikipedia) then one should go to the history of the article, and get the perma-link to a version on a particular day, use that as the reference, and that date as the date. pimenta racemosa information

I don't know how to edit here but the information about the pimenta racemosa tree or bay rum tree has some very serious errors or contain some erroneous information. Two of the most glaring are that it is not an invasive species that takes over,it is a tree that does not do well outside of the caribbean and must be physically planted and bay rum is not the same as rum. They are two totally different products not even closely related as one comes for sugarcane, molasses, and one comes from the oil of the leaves of the bay rum tree and it's oil is toxic. Meta login not working

Why doesn't my meta login work at http://wikimediadc.org/wiki/Grants.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 16:01, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A Wikimedia account does not mean that you can login to all Wikimedia Chapters by that account. You can login using that account in sites where there is a little a WIKIMEDIA project picture at the bottom-right of every page next to Powered by MediaWiki like wmuk:. But as you can see, in http://wikimediadc.org/ there is no a WIKIMEDIA project at the bottom right. You will have to manually create an account on the Chapter itself. And for future reference, Wikimedia chapters do not represent the Foundation legally. They are separate and independent legal entities, only liable for the work they accomplish in their jurisdiction. --Ushau97 (talk) 16:33, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thx.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 20:33, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, login ability isn't determined by presence of the a WIKIMEDIA project picture http://bits.wikimedia.org/images/wikimedia-button.png. Many wikis at Special:SiteMatrix#mw-sitematrix-others have the picture but don't allow login with a global Wikimedia account. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:12, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone create a Wikipedia page for me?

Is it possible to get wikipedia pages made for a young up and coming NASCAR driver. I have tried to create it myself however I am having some complications. How would I go about completing this task? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jluchkiw (talkcontribs) 16:17, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you the subject of the page that you want created? If so, you should get someone else to create it for you, because of the autobiography policy. It will need to be accompanied by reliable sources and you will need to meet the notability criteria. You can go to Articles for Creation to make your request, if someone agrees that you meet the notability criteria. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:23, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I guess that this may refer to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Dylan Kwasniewski - David Biddulph (talk) 16:33, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) The subject of an article needs to be notable. See WP:NMOTORSPORT for some guidance. If you are "up and coming" you may not qualify yet. If you do, you can request an article at WP:RA RudolfRed (talk) 16:24, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are videos of a trailer and a release date a reliable source?

So, I'm going to edit a video game article, but I just wanted to make sure that a video/ trailer would be a reliable source for a release date? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Deviljho12 (talkcontribs) 16:34, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I would generally say yes. This page and particularly this section should have the information you need to determine if something is a reliable source. If the teaser trailer is made by the company that is making the game, than I would say that it is quite likely that it is a reliable source for the release date. You may also want to read Wikipedia:Videos as references which covers how to cite videos as references, though it may not be entirely applicable to your situation as it appears to mostly cover movies and TV shows. Referencing a state code

I am trying reference a section of state legal code. The ref goes on forever, though, what with the state and year, title number and name, chapter number and name, and section number and name - and they appear out of order when I use cite web. Is there a template that I can plug all these numbers and titles into and have it come out looking correct in the ref section? (This section of the code, btw.) 71.234.215.133 (talk) 18:40, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cite act may do it.--ukexpat (talk) 19:29, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Yeah, there is a cite act but it doesn't give you the flexibility of the Citation Style 1 templates.
Trappist the monk (talk) 19:37, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Your government at work, creating titles that are almost as long as the law. This is cite book using |at= for the section number and name:
"Chapter 78 Judicial and State Marshals". 2011 Connecticut Code Title 6 Counties and County Officers. Judicial and State Marshals. Sec. 6-38i. Special deputy sheriffs and deputy sheriffs serving on December 1, 2000, to continue as judicial marshals and employees of Judicial Department. Collective bargaining unit. cite book: External link in |chapterurl= (help); Unknown parameter |chapterurl= ignored (|chapter-url= suggested) (help)
Or because the section title is such a tangle of words, perhaps:
"Chapter 78 Judicial and State Marshals". 2011 Connecticut Code Title 6 Counties and County Officers. Judicial and State Marshals. Sec. 6-38i. cite book: External link in |chapterurl= (help); Unknown parameter |chapterurl= ignored (|chapter-url= suggested) (help)
But, as you've noted, CS1 is constrained in how it orders the elements of a citation. You could, of course, hand right a citation:
2011 Connecticut Code Title 6 Counties and County Officers. Judicial and State Marshals "Chapter 78 Judicial and State Marshals" Sec. 6-38i. Special deputy sheriffs and deputy sheriffs serving on December 1, 2000, to continue as judicial marshals and employees of Judicial Department. Collective bargaining unit.

I agree completely on what the government at work is doing; I am very sick of staring at paragraphical (?) section titles.
Turns out cite web has the at= parameter also, but it is still bollixed. I am free-handing the link and using the suggested format from the CT link. While it may not be proper per the MOS here, it will get the job done. I dislike leaving it for whatever editor comes along next, but I lack the know-how to fix it myself. Many thanks for the help. 71.234.215.133 (talk) 20:34, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, new playthings. Thank you very much for that category. I will have to test drive some of them, as the TX Govt Code is perfect - except for being for Texas. I am also unsure there is an actual webpage for the Code on State of Connecticut sites: the search from the external link (About the General Statutes) came back to a read-or-download script page, with nothing to link back to. 71.234.215.133 (talk) 21:05, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
List of titles doesn't do it? Isn't §6-38i the section in question?
Trappist the monk (talk) 21:30, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That works. It is not templated like Texas, but at least the links will go back to ct.gov and not a random law site. Thank you, all. 71.234.215.133 (talk) 00:11, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What to do when biased against another editor?

When we encounter non-vandal editors who refuse to embrace grammar, MOS standards, etc, is there a non-invasive, non-combative way to request an unbiased set of eyes regularly review their edits to a specific article? (I don't mean ALL of their edits, because that's beyond the scope of my interest). The Dispute Resolution board seems to deal with SPECIFIC disputes, not "This dude just doesn't get it" disputes. I don't find it an equitable solution that I bow-out of editing the articles I'm interested in, but I find myself biased against hard-headed editors who seem impervious to correction or edification, and I've Assumed Good Faith when reasonable, occasionally going to great lengths to explain reversions. Is there a polite way to solicit other editors' participation in specific article updates without creating an official complaint against the contributor(s) and their content? I'm not interested in banhammers, only quality articles. Thanks! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 06:26, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Does WP:RFC help at all? It also suggests alternative pages at the top. CaptRik (talk) 13:02, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think it might, thank you. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:14, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Have you tried reasoning with the user, either on his talk page or on article talk pages? My assumption is that the answer is yes, and you are asking her because the user "just doesn't get it". As CaptRik says, the RFC page describes the difference between content dispute resolution and user conduct issues. The user may be inexperienced and may not understand how Wikipedia works, but competence is required and the user should try to learn. Unwillingness to learn causes a competence issue to become a conduct issue. A user conduct RFC is generally considered a last resort, because it is a step toward requesting that the user be banned, but if the user won't listen, then the reminder that he is at risk of being banned may be an incentive to listen. Robert McClenon (talk) 14:18, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have indeed tried to reason. I think an article RFC might be warranted. Thanks for your input! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 15:22, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean an article content RFC, or a user conduct RFC? If the editor won't listen to reason, then a user conduct RFC may be warranted. (An article content RFC may also be warranted.) Robert McClenon (talk) 16:36, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In keeping with my original intention, I don't have a vested interest to have the editor disciplined, only to help develop articles that meet encyclopedic standards. I figure if I submit article content RFCs, it will help to get other eyes on the article(s), steer the article toward better quality, establish consensus, keep my bias in check, and potentially help the editor to learn. If the editor refuses to learn, it would become a matter for the community. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:37, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Account Cleanup

I have two accounts, this one which I used on the English wikipedia and one I used on the dutch wikipedia. I would like to rectify this situation and if I'm not mistaken, I should make a usurpation request. However, I really don't like either of the names I used, so I would like a username change as well. How would I best go about this?

What I think I would have to is to first request a name change for one of the accounts, then once that is done create a usurpation request to merge the two accounts and then verify that the other account is my own by responding to the request with it.

Is this correct? Is there a more direct way to approach this situation? Is it a problem that I don't have all that many edits in any of the accounts?

Sorry for all the questions and thanks for any help. My name is Jasper (talk) 08:18, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do I add a photo of myself to my home page?

I am having problems navigating the image insert of a photo of myself. It is a photo of me that I own. It is up online at my IMDB home page gallery, and also on my personal website danielquinn.net. I was able to enter it on the Wikipedia Commons site, but I would like viewers to see it on my regular Wikipedia page.

Thank you, Daniel Quinn — Preceding unsigned comment added by Queenmab819 (talkcontribs) 16:19, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Help:Images This should answer you queries. Cheers, Mlpearc (powwow) 16:41, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That the photo is of you, and that you own it, does not necessarily mean that you have the right to upload it to Wikipedia Commons. It may seem absurd, but Wikipedia aims to comply with the law, which says that the copyright in the photo belongs to whoever's finger pressed the button on the camera, and that person's permission is needed for the upload to Commons. Now, you say that you want the picture to appear on "your regular Wikipedia page". I guess that's not this one, that Daniel Quinn is older than you. Is it this one? If you tell us the name the image has on Commons, and the page where you want it to appear, then once the copyright issue is clarified, I or another editor here can do it for you. Maproom (talk) 16:39, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for responding so quickly. Yes I am the younger Daniel Quinn. I am the actor not the writer. This is the jpeg I have uploaded to the Commons site. /Users/dqactor/Desktop/Daniel_Quinntwick.jpeg I appreciate all of your help! Best regards, Daniel Quinn — Preceding unsigned comment added by Queenmab819 (talkcontribs) 16:54, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Daniel. In Mediawikiland, that picture is referred to as (and the case of letters and punctuation must be right). You put what I've just said in your user page, and the picture will appear.
Incidentally, I see you have posted a reply on your user page: that is not what user pages are intended for: you have both a user page User:Queenmab819 and a user talk page User talk:Queenmab819; the latter is for discussion and communication between you and other Wikipedia editors.
One more point: it is possible that what you are intending to do is to write an article about yourself. If that is your intention, please read WP:AUTOBIO for why this is strongly discouraged. You can write about yourself as a Wikipedia editor on your user page, and place a picture there if you wish; but an article about you outside Wikipedia (i.e. as an actor) should be in article space not user space, and should not be written by you. Apologies if you're already aware of this. --ColinFine (talk) 17:06, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Editing about yourself is not impossible but, is highly discouraged. Mlpearc (powwow) 17:41, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Digging for Help

Hey, has anybody seen Cacycle? I need his help on the subjects of a couple of posts that I added near the bottom of the talk page that he uses for wikEd stuff, but he hasn't responded to either of those or to an e-mail that I sent him. Maybe he'll pop in later today with a new version of wikEd or something, but he needs to read the feedback that I've given him first!

Photo and data updates to the 152d Airlift Wing Wiki page

Please advise how I can go about updating a photo which shows the 152nd Airlift Wing's current unit patch. Also, I'm unable to update the page to say "152nd Airlift Wing" instead of "152d Airlift Wing." Thank You! 152AW/Public Affairs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.79.9.16 (talk) 17:31, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That move had been made (we rename articles by moving them). However, something isn't quite right, let me check into it.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 17:40, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see that it was moved, but then moved back with the explanation " Air Force does not use "nd" suffix". How do we sort this out?
One other note, I thought I would check the official website, which appeared to be linked at the bottom of the article, but that is a dead link. Do you know the correct link? (we'll get to the image question shortly.)--SPhilbrick(Talk) 17:43, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see this page, claiming to be the official site, used "nd". Does 152AW/Public Affairs agree this is the official page?
I posed a query to the experienced editor who moved the article to its present name. It can be found here. While I await a response, let's discuss the image issue. Some people go to the image description page, see "Upload a new version of this file" and mistakenly think this is the way to change an image. I do not know if that was your issue. Can you explain whether you are looking to add a new image, or replace an existing image with a new one? The processes aren't the same. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 17:57, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
From what I can tell, there are three points of view on suffixes of USAF units.
* If you visit the Air Force Historical Research Agency site which is where official lineages and histories are kept, numerical units are without any suffix (i.e. 1 Fighter Wing, 354 Operations Group). Although this seems to be a recent method.
* If you look at documents from the AFHRA (Maurer, Maurer. Air Force Combat Units of World War II. Maxwell AFB, Alabama: Office of Air Force History, 1983. ISBN 0-89201-092-4.) you'll see unit designations are with the "d" for 2d (ex: 2d Bombardment Squadron). The other day, in fact, I asked the AFHRA for a current active-duty unit history unpublished on their website and they sent this in email File:22d Intelligence Squadron.pdf which uses the "d" suffix.
* Now if you look at unit websites, some are "d" some are "nd". (http://www.152aw.ang.af.mil/). However, even there the suffix is dropped in the URL, although they use "152nd" on their website, and the individual who first raised this question uses "152AW/Public Affairs" (w/o a suffix).
I tend to use the "d" suffix as that is what is historically been used, although I believe the No Suffix method (ex: 152 Airlift Wing) is the current "official" designation. Bwmoll3 (talk) 20:07, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the response. Sounds more complicated than I had hoped. I'm going to take a pass on moving the article, until such time as there is more clarity. I'll try to respond to OPs issues about image upload, if I see it.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 20:30, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free use rationale templates

I have no idea where to ask this, but I'm curious why the Upload File option uses Non-free use rationale 2? It's not so much that it's confusing to fill out, but that the end result looks like it was hacked out by some noob (me). See here. Whereas has so much more information that's far better worded and explained. Why can't these two templates be combined so that the NFCC links appear, but the wording is still more professional, and the template doesn't look like some half-filled out thing with "n.a."s and sentences that start with lowercases and so forth? – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 17:36, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, the file pages "Summary and License" sections look fine. Mlpearc (powwow) 17:45, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:NPA

Hello,

English is not my mother tongue and I am new at Wikipedia. Could you please tell me if I may do something not according to Wikipedia:NPA here http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Primark&oldid=553381930#.27Sweatshops.27_.26_Primark?

Many thanks, New worl (talk) 18:38, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It looks to me like a simple miscommunication; I believe he thought you were saying you were going to Google his name, whereas it's fairly clear to me you meant you were going to Google for information about the subject you were discussing and provide it to him. I've commented on the talk page. --Floquenbeam (talk) 18:49, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Floquenbeam very much for your correct understanding.
I have a very bad feeling of being told I can also tell you that if I was an administrator on this wiki, I would likely consider that a threat and you would end up blocked although I am not the one who misunderstood. New worl (talk) 19:00, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Floquenbeam. If you were me, would you expect 'some words' from the one who misunderstood? Thanks, New worl (talk) 19:12, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think their subsequent comments on that page were fair to you, no, but it is usually not worth trying to insist that someone who was rude apologize to you. If they interfere with your ability to discuss things reasonably, that would be a bigger problem. But right now all they have done is be needlessly aggressive in warning you not to be disruptive. --Floquenbeam (talk) 20:01, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Floquenbeam, you are a true hero. Have a good day / night wherever you are. Best wishes, New worl (talk) 20:09, 3 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do I change company name

On the QSI Corporation page, the page title needs to change from QSI Corporation, as that company has been bought out by Beijer Electronics in 2010, to Beijer Electronics Inc.

I know how to change the text within the page but the page title.
