Finding a source

Tips for finding a source yourself

Main page: WP:Find your source
  • Send a request to the author(s) of research papers for a copy of their paper by email.
  • Check what sources are available to you in The Wikipedia Library – editors active for at least six months with over 500 edits, at least 10 of them in the last month, and with no active blocks have immediate access to the Wikipedia Library Bundle.
    • Available databases in the bundle include: Gale, EBSCO, JSTOR, Oxford and ProQuest
  • Consider applying for access to additional Wikipedia Library sources at The Wikipedia Library Card Platform.
    • Additional databases include: Newspapers.com, NewspaperARCHIVE.com, Project MUSE, Taylor & Francis and much more.
  • Search for periodical titles in the Wikipedia Library database index at The Wikipedia Library/A–Z.
  • Check on Google Books, or your local library or national library may be able to obtain it through an interlibrary loan or subscription.
  • Search Google Scholar for archived copies of journals in institutional repositories.
  • Check whether your alma mater's library offers electronic document delivery services for alumni, if applicable.
  • If the article is paywalled, a browser extension may bypass the paywall. Try Unpaywall for academic journals or Bypass Paywalls Clean (Firefox, Chrome) for news websites.

Note that sites like Library Genesis (LibGen) and Sci-Hub offer direct, free access to a large range of publications, but there are legal questions around their use and neither the Wikimedia Foundation nor the Wikipedia community endorses them.

Making a request

  • A request may be an open question or you may ask for a specific journal, article or work.
  • All kinds of sources are possible here: newspapers, magazine article, databases, encyclopedias, court decisions, laws, books, etc.
  • We cannot perform full book copy requests due to copyright. Please ask for specific pages that relate to the article(s) you need them for.
  • You may contact research helpers directly or make a request on this page.
  • To receive email without disclosing your email address publicly, configure your email in Special:Preferences.
  • Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, and date or identifiers like DOI, ISBN, ISSN, PMID, OCLC, etc.
  • Indicate which Wikipedia articles are being improved.
  • Once a request has been fulfilled add the {{Resolved}} template.
  • Filled requests are archived.
  • Requests unfilled after three months will be archived.

Fulfilling a request

  • Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests.
  • Indicate which part or parts of the request is being handled so others do not duplicate your work.
  • Notify (mention) the requester using {{ping|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}.
  • You can:
    • point to a pre-existing electronic document by giving its URL ( http://... )
    • share scans of pages or documents using a file-sharing service, provided it is legal
    • upload out of copyright works to Wikimedia Commons and/ or Wikisource (but be careful that this does not breach your own institution's policies)
    • email a link or plain text to a requester using the Special:EmailUser feature but for attachments, you need to ask them to mail you first so you can reply.

Copyright tips:

  • Respect copyrights and terms of services of any online services you use.
  • Share content in a limited manner that is targeted at as few individuals as possible to achieve a specific improvement on Wikipedia. All content is shared under a presumed non-commercial, educational, fair use purpose in order to conduct research about topics on Wikipedia and/or to improve Wikipedia content.
  • Share copies privately rather than with a publicly accessible link whenever possible. Copyrighted articles from print publications or copies obtained through online databases should not be uploaded for unrestricted distribution via open websites. Preferably, do not share login access codes for entire websites; rather, share only an individual copy of a resource.
  • Remember that you take on the individual risk when sharing content, and act in a way that is comfortable and safe for you. Individual editors are solely responsible for sharing copyrighted content and assume all legal risks.

Since we're still waiting on the Bonmariage source, can I get some help to try to solve a mystery? Kusma found this which might be the 1892 portrait of Dumont, Christie's supposedly sold in 2010. The Christie's page says it is confirmed in Dortu, volume 2 on pages 279 and 461, but Archive.org only has vols 4, 5, and 6. Google books hits on volume 2, but when you pull it up it is vol 1. Worldcat doesn't show any open access volumes. Christie's shows alternative verification in Tout l'œuvre peint de Toulouse-Lautrec, which is on Hathitrust, but locked, so cannot see p. 113 and Toulouse-Lautrec by G. Néret has no on-line version that I can find. Any chance someone can find Dortu, volume 2?

Vasily Katanyan's Memoirs, sourcing an image

  • Katanyan, Vasily (1998). Воспоминания [Memoirs] (in Russian). p. 128.

The photograph 1918 vmayakovsky-lbrik retouched.jpg is used in the article Lilya Brik. The metadata on Commons states that it was taken in 1918 and "appeared retouched in official Soviet publications" in the 1960s, but AFAICT this is insufficient to establish that the image is in the public domain in Russia or the United States. I am hoping that the book from which the photograph was sourced may have additional information. Therefore, if the photograph appears on page 128 but is described in neighboring pages, I request those pages as well.

Брик и оставит поэта наедине с деревом. Milwaukee Journal article on Forever Young, Forever Free

As I was taking care of old article drafts in my user subpages from yesterday evening till today's overnight (a process I'll resume soon enough), I approached the one for a little-seen 1975 South African family film called Forever Young, Forever Free (a.k.a. e'Lollipop). Back when I set up the draft in mid-July 2011, I left in a GNewspapers link to a Milwaukee Journal article from ca. 1976–78 mentioning U.S. distributor Universal's decision to shelve the film. That very link, news.google.com/newspapers?id=9lYaAAAAIBAJ&sjid=PSoEAAAAIBAJ&dq=forever-young-forever-free&pg=6179%2C1411996, is no longer around due to licensing issues; the current Journal-Sentinel team switched to a partnership with NewsLibrary by the late 2010s. (Not even Wayback has it preserved, to my dismay; why do such things tend to happen to me?)

Fourth of July tomorrow or not, I'd preferably like someone from Wisconsin or nearby to fetch the story from library microfilm/database or otherwise—en route to the last missing piece this article needs. (Bonus points if more material is unveiled.) With luck, we might aim for GA status sometime down the road.

Hi guys. It looks like WP Library now has an awesomely comprehensive search engine across all my available libraries, such as EBSCO and friends, right? That's too good to be true, so does it work like it appears? Thanks to everybody involved.

1) Does anybody have the full contents of this article titled "THE STRUGGLE FOR THE SOUL OF FRONTIER BAPTISTS: THE ANTI-MISSION CONTROVERSY IN THE LOWER WABASH VALLEY"? This inquiry is for Isaac McCoy and possibly others: his associates (Johnston Lykins and Jotham Meeker), and their missions (Carey Mission and Pottawatomie Baptist Mission Building).

2) I'm looking for the Lexington Express article cited in "Seizure of Arms". I know 1800s newspapers like to change their names all the time, and I found one mention of "Lexington Weekly Tribune". The closest I can find to "Lexington Weekly Express" is this collection of 8 pages. For Katarina Bogdanović On the second source, neither the German or Serbian WP articles indicates a volume number. The Serbian article lists pages in the ref section, so I have shown those above. A search for the book produces nada for me except the locked google profile. There is a Scribd link to Part 1 and you can see from the 10 names listed in the table of content, she isn't one of them, which is why I am fairly certain she is in Part 2. Any help would be appreciated.

I did a bit of searching but I had no luck. American pre-Civil War newspapers, as you already expressed, is a hodgepod of different titles, some lasting just a few issues. Have you looked the library of congress's newspaper site?[5] The LoC records are great to see if a title did actually exist during a time that you are looking for it. Both the Express and the Democrat existed and would have published on those dates. You may want to check with KC public library. They may be willing to help. Tell them you are doing it for Wikipedia. I am trying to find what address Lufthansa was at in 1980. Previously Flightglobal had easy online access to PDF archives from previous decades, and I used online PDFs to find addresses of airlines. However it seems Flightglobal has yanked these, and not all of the PDFs were preserved by the wayback machine. I wonder if someone has access to Flightglobal and could peruse the World Airline Directory of that year, for airlines starting in "L," to find this info.

WAN-IFRA

For List of newspapers by circulation. The World Association of Newspapers (WAN-IFRA) publishes a worldwide newspaper circulation report, including the top selling newspapers, these are not public. The latest report that I have been able to find is the 2016 one (see article) which contains details on the top 20 such newspapers. While I located the 2019 one as well ([6]) this version does not contain circulation figures, though a headline "Average daily unit circulation print" indicates that it was perhaps contained separately, also further confirmed by this press release. But I have been unable to fully access these 2019 figures, if someone can help it would really help in updating the article.

On classmates.com, a classmate that graduated from that school in 1994, mentions in her bio that she went to high school with Amoia. Unfortunately there's no yearbook there for 1994. Tale from a Thai Ban Nai village about a snake marriage

For Champavati and The Story of the Hamadryad. A preview of the work indicates there is the episode of a woman marrying a snake husband that turns out to tbe human after all, and another girl getting devoured by a real snake, like the Indian tale. A search on Google directs me to an independent page with the Thesis, but, on Proquest via Wikipedia Library, I do not seem to find it on the search engine.

None of them outright state that they are year-end charts, but the data itself suggests that this is the case (e.g. with highest peak and overall time on the charts). I have the data saved elsewhere in case I need it, but no pictures of the pages themselves. The Moxy Show

The first citation is a bit of a weird request. I can already preview the one time where The Moxy Show is mentioned on page 211. What I actually want is its reference. After the sentence where The Moxy Show is mentioned, there is a superscript "3" that indicates the third footnote of the chapter, pointing to a reference. However, said reference is located in a section of "Chapter Notes" that I cannot preview. If I can look at the reference, I might be able to continue my research.

The second citation is one already used in the article above. However, the link does not contain the full text. In fact, the link is dead, and the archived link requires one to purchase the source to read it. I feel like this article could have information about the show's premise and production.

The third citation is even more elusive. There is very little information about this particular issue of Animation Magazine, and it doesn't allow readers to preview it. The only reason why I want this source is because I am having a very difficult time finding sources about The Moxy Show's third and final iteration, The Moxy & Flea Show, which only had one episode, and the preview text from the search results says "The Moxy and Flea Show debuts on the USA Networks."

The last sentence of the abstract on ProQuest says, "Just so you know, Flea was added to the show at the request of kids who thought Moxy should have a sidekick." I requested this previously, see WP:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request/Archive 146#George Griffith – The Warrior of If, and was alerted to Moskowitz's "War: Warriors of If" in Strange Horizons: The Spectrum of Science Fiction (1976), which is available via the Internet Archive. It turns out that these two essays are not identical, and there is a fair amount of information in the earlier essay that is not present in the later one. Beethoven reference in Michelmore biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer

For J. Robert Oppenheimer

If someone has a copy of "The Swift Years", Peter Michelmore's biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer, I'd appreciate if they could look up Beethoven in the index. That should point to a page somewhere close to the end of the book, that says something about Beethoven. Specifically, if the book is the one I think that I remember, it says Oppenheimer and his students liked listening to a particular Beethoven composition. It wouldn't surprise me if it was one of the late string quartets, given various other woo-woo Oppie was involved with.

Could someone check this for me, and maybe let me know what composition it was? There is no need to scan the page or anything. No I'm not trying to use the info in the Oppenheimer article. I basically want to know whether I'm confusing this book with a different one. If it's the one I'm thinking of, my physics teacher recommended it to me quite a few years ago, so I'll try to get a copy and use it as a general purpose source for the article.

There is a scanned copy of the book in archive.org's digital lending program, but it relies on some kind of in-browser DRM that the browser I use doesn't support and which I find obnoxious in principle. But it might be a convenient way to access the book if you use DRM anyway.

Evening Standard article from 1965 (may need microfilm search)

Hi, I'm looking for a copy or full transcript of a 1965 Evening Standard article which I believe is titled "IT'S THE GHOST OF LILLIE LANGTRY - AS QUEER THINGS HAPPEN IN HER OLD HOME". I am told the date of the article is April 2, 1965. One exact quote I've seen attributed several times to it is "Langtry's ghost appeared one day".

Evening Standard is part of the Newspapers.com collection, but I was unable to find a piece like that in the 2 April 1965 paper. Yeah, I had tried and failed on Newspapers.com as well, which is why I came here for other sources. Apparently there are other archives available for the Evening Standard, and apparently it is also viewable on microfilm in libraries such as the British Library, St. Pancras, London. Our article seems to suggest that the Evening Standard printed as many as six editions per day, so I'm guessing this was from one of the other ones. ("In the days before commercial broadcasting ...a given edition could be your only source for a particular piece of information.") We have two editors that 'claim' to have read it: AnthonyCamp, who is a professional researcher, author, and genealogist (but may have erred in his recent recollection of its contents), and Inspector Colombo, who is a disruptive and combative newbie determined to disprove experienced editors and who claims to have read the library microfilm and posted the article contents on a now-archived talkpage. I would like to get a bona fide copy of the article to prove or disprove what each of those editors says, so the wiki article can be corrected if necessary.
