Goodmayes railway station is on the Great Eastern Main Line serving the district of Goodmayes in the London Borough of Redbridge, north east London. It is 9 miles 23 chains (14.9 km) down-line from London Liverpool Street and is situated between Seven Kings and Chadwell Heath. Its three-letter station code is GMY and it is in Travelcard Zone 4.

The station was opened in 1901 by the Great Eastern Railway. It is currently managed by TfL Rail. Train services call at Goodmayes as part of the Shenfield-Liverpool Street stopping "metro" service. From 2019, the station will be fully served by Crossrail, linking Goodmayes to additional stations in central London as well as Reading and London Heathrow Airport.[2] TfL Rail, the precursor of Crossrail, took over the running of the Shenfield "metro" in May 2015.

History

Goodmayes station was opened on 18 February 1901 by the Great Eastern Railway (GER) on the Great Eastern Main Line out of London Liverpool Street. The station once had an extensive shunting yard for goods traffic, but this fell into disuse following the Beeching cuts to the railway system in 1963, and was eventually dismantled. The site of the yard stood on the area between the present track and the High Road and has been replaced by a supermarket, other shops and housing. There was also a large yard area between the existing track area and Kinfauns Road. This yard area went as far as Chadwell Heath.

Services

The typical Monday-Saturday off-peak service at Goodmayes is as follows:[3]

Operator Route Rolling stock Frequency
TfL Rail London Liverpool Street - Stratford - Maryland - Forest Gate - Manor Park - Ilford - Seven Kings - Goodmayes - Chadwell Heath - Romford - Gidea Park - Harold Wood - Brentwood - Shenfield Class 315 6x per hour

Future development

In 2017 new Class 345 trains will enter operation as the new Crossrail service partially opens. The route will be extended through central London to Heathrow Airport and Reading in 2019. The four platforms at Goodmayes will be extended from their current length of 184 metres (201 yd) to accommodate the new trains, which will be over 200 metres (220 yd) long.

The station will also receive three new lifts providing access to all platforms, improved lighting and signage, help points, and new ticket machines and gates within a refurbished ticket hall.

Connections

London Buses routes 364 and 387 serve the station.
