Grundy County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 10,432. Its county seat is Trenton6. The county was organized in 1841 and is named after U.S. Attorney General Felix Grundy.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,134 km² (438 mi²). 1,129 km² (436 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it (0.49%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 10,432 people, 4,382 households, and 2,887 families residing in the county. The population density was 9/km² (24/mi²). There were 5,102 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.61% White, 0.40% Black or African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 1.58% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 4,382 households out of which 27.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.80% were married couples living together, 8.00% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.10% were non-families. 30.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.85.

In the county the population was spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 23.70% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 20.60% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 90.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $27,333, and the median income for a family was $34,583. Males had a median income of $26,706 versus $18,043 for females. The per capita income for the county was $15,432. About 12.30% of families and 15.80% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.80% of those under age 18 and 13.30% of those age 65 or over.
