Adventure Time is an American animated television series created by Pendleton Ward for Cartoon Network. The series follows the adventures of Finn (voiced by Jeremy Shada), a human boy, and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake (voiced by John DiMaggio), a dog with magical powers to change shape and grow and shrink at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo. Throughout the series, they interact with the show's other main characters: Princess Bubblegum (voiced by Hynden Walch), the sovereign of the Candy Kingdom; the Ice King (voiced by Tom Kenny), a demented but largely misunderstood ice wizard; and Marceline the Vampire Queen (voiced by Olivia Olson), a thousand-year-old vampire and rock music enthusiast.[1] The pilot first aired in 2007,[2] and it was later re-aired on the incubator series Random! Cartoons on Nicktoons Network.[3][4] The pilot eventually leaked onto the internet and became a cult hit on YouTube.[5] After Nickelodeon declined to turn the short into a full-fledged show, Cartoon Network purchased the rights, and Adventure Time launched as a series on April 5, 2010.[6][7] Season seven, which also contains a special mini-series, began airing on November 2, 2015.[8][9] The show has also been renewed for an eighth season, and a feature-length film—which is being developed by Chris McKay and Roy Lee—is also in the works.[10][11] On September 29, 2016, it was announced that the series would conclude following its ninth season.[12]

Each Adventure Time episode is about eleven minutes in length; pairs of episodes are often telecast in order to fill a half-hour program time slot.[13] The first four seasons each contain 26 episodes, the fifth contains 52 episodes, the sixth contains 43 episodes, and the seventh contains 39. For the first five and a half seasons, the show aired on Monday nights.[nb 1] However, starting with the sixth-season episode "Breezy", the show began to shift both its timeslot and its day of airing.[14] Ever since its debut, Adventure Time has been a ratings success for Cartoon Network, with the highest-rated episodes scoring over 3 million viewers. The show has received positive reviews from critics and has developed a strong following among teenagers and adults, many of whom are attracted due to the series' animation, stories, and characters.[15] Adventure Time has won two Annie Awards,[16] six Primetime Emmy Awards,[17] two British Academy Children's Awards,[18][19] a Motion Picture Sound Editors Award,[20] a Pixel Award,[21] a Peabody Award,[22] and a Kerrang! Award.[23] The series has also been nominated for three Critics' Choice Television Awards,[24][25] two Annecy Festival Awards,[26][27] a TCA Award,[28] and a Sundance Film Festival Award,[29] among others. Several compilation DVDs have been released. In addition, the first six seasons have been released on DVD and Blu-ray. Adventure Time is produced by Cartoon Network Studios and Frederator Studios.

List of episodes

The seventh season of Adventure Time, an American animated television series created by Pendleton Ward, premiered on Cartoon Network on November 2, 2015, and concluded on March 19, 2016, and was produced by Frederator Studios and Cartoon Network Studios. It follows the adventures of Finn, a human boy, and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shape and size at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, where they interact with the show's other main characters: Princess Bubblegum, The Ice King, Marceline the Vampire Queen, Lumpy Space Princess, BMO, and Flame Princess.

The season was storyboarded and written by Tom Herpich, Steve Wolfhard, Seo Kim, Somvilay Xayaphone, Jesse Moynihan, Adam Muto, Ako Castuera, Sam Alden, Kirsten Lepore, Andres Salaff, Hanna K. Nyström, Luke Pearson, Lyle Partridge, Kris Mukai, Graham Falk, and Kent Osborne. The seventh season of Adventure Time features an eight-episode story-arc, promoted and originally broadcast as the miniseries Stakes, which examines Marceline's backstory and follows Finn, Jake, Bubblegum, and Marceline as they attempt to defeat several newly resurrected vampires. This season also features the stop-motion episode "Bad Jubies", directed by guest animator Kirsten Lepore.

The season premiered with the episode "Bonnie & Neddy", which was viewed by 1.07 million viewers (this marked a decrease in ratings from the previous season finale, "Hot Diggity Doom"/"The Comet"). The Stakes miniseries, which aired near the beginning of the season, rated well, with each episode being seen by around 1.8 million viewers. The season concluded with "The Thin Yellow Line", which was watched by 1.15 million viewers; this made it the lowest-rated Adventure Time season finale at the time. Critical reception to the season was largely positive, and the episode "The Hall of Egress" was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Short-format Animation at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards. At the same event, Herpich and Jason Kolowski each won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, for their work on "Stakes Part 8: The Dark Cloud" and "Bad Jubies", respectively. "Bad Jubies" won an Annie Award for Best Animated Television/Broadcast Production for Children. Several compilation DVDs that contain episodes from the season have been released, and the full season was released on DVD on July 18, 2017.

Development

Concept

The series follows the adventures of Finn the Human, a human boy, and his best friend Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shape and size at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, wherein they interact with the other major characters, including: Princess Bubblegum, The Ice King, Marceline the Vampire Queen, Lumpy Space Princess, BMO, and Flame Princess. Common storylines revolve around Finn and Jake discovering strange creatures, dealing with the antagonistic but misunderstood Ice King, and battling monsters in order to help others.[208] Multi-episode story arcs for this season include Bubblegum adjusting to life in exile and eventually reclaiming the Candy Kingdom crown,[209][210] and Marceline coming to terms with her vampiric nature.[210][211]

Production

This season features episode outlines penned by Ashly Burch.

On July 25, 2014, the series was renewed for a seventh season.[212] On September 26, 2014, Tom Herpich posted a picture on Tumblr of himself and Steve Wolfhard pitching the season premiere to the Adventure Time crew, suggesting that storyboarding for the season had already commenced.[213] By August 9, 2015, production of the season had been completed and most of the staff's focus had shifted to the eighth season.[214] In regards to the tone of the season, at the 2015 New York Comic Con, Muto said that this season focuses more on telling "simpler stories with the characters".[215] While he contrasted the show's seventh season with its sixth—which he described as "heady"—Muto asserted that the seventh season would not be a "throwback" to the show's earlier seasons, which had been defined by their focus on comedy.[215]

Originally, the show's seventh season comprised episodes "Bonnie & Neddy" through "Reboot", for a total of 39.[g] However, when it came time to upload the seventh season onto streaming sites, Cartoon Network chose to end the season with its 26th episode, "The Thin Yellow Line."[218] The network then began counting the remaining 13 episodes (which included "Broke His Crown" through "Reboot") as making up the first portion of season eight, despite their having been produced as part of the seventh.[219] This new episode count was cemented by the release of the complete seventh season DVD on July 18, 2017, which included episodes up until "The Thin Yellow Line".[220]

This season's episodes were produced in a process similar to those of the previous seasons. Each episode was outlined in two-to-three pages that contained the necessary plot information.[221] These outlines were then handed to storyboard artists, who created full storyboards.[222] Design and coloring were done at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, California, and animation was handled overseas in South Korea by Rough Draft Korea and Saerom Animation.[223][224][225] Kirsten Lepore directed the episode "Bad Jubies", which was animated via stop motion, continuing a tradition from the previous two seasons of using a guest animator for an episode.[226] Lepore had previously animated the short stop-motion tag for Frederator Studios, one of the series' production companies.[227] There was a sneak peek of "Bad Jubies" at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on June 19, 2015, several months before the season's premiere.[228]

Storyboard artists for the season included Herpich, Wolfhard, Seo Kim, Somvilay Xayaphone, Jesse Moynihan, Muto, Ako Castuera, Sam Alden, Andres Salaff, Hanna K. Nyström, Luke Pearson, Lyle Partridge, Kris Mukai, Graham Falk, and Kent Osborne.[h] Pearson—a British cartoonist who had worked on the fifth season with Xayaphone—was temporarily hired to storyboard two episodes with Partridge.[229][230][231] Similarly, Castuera, who had stepped down from her role as a regular storyboard artist after the fifth season, returned in a temporary role for three episodes with Moynihan.[232]

While series creator Pendleton Ward worked on a few outlines for this season,[233] Osborne told IndieWire that Ward did not take an active role in developing stories that were produced after November 2014. Ward had an oversight role and provided occasional input, focusing much of his attention on developing an Adventure Time movie.[234] In February 2015, Ashly Burch was hired to write story outlines for the show. Burch had voiced several characters in the sixth season[235] before becoming a permanent member of the writing staff. She later joked that, because she was a fan of the show prior to being hired, writing for the show was akin to writing fan fiction.[236]

Miniseries

Rebecca Sugar returned to write a song for the miniseries.

On February 18, 2015, during Cartoon Network's upfront announcing shows for their 2015–16 season, the network announced a special miniseries, which would air as part of season seven.[237][238][239] Cartoon Network was encouraged to greenlight the miniseries after the success of the 2014 event series Over the Garden Wall, which was created by Pat McHale, the former creative director of Adventure Time.[240] The eight-episode miniseries, entitled Stakes,[241] follows Finn and Jake as they face a new threat brought about when one of Princess Bubblegum's science projects unleashes the ghosts of Marceline's past.[237] Former storyboard artist Rebecca Sugar returned to write a new song for the miniseries (entitled "Everything Stays") and to voice Marceline's mother.[241][242]

Cast

Several guest stars lent their voices to Adventure Time characters for the very first time this season, including Jenny Slate (left) and Tunde Adebimpe (right).

The voice actors for the season included: Jeremy Shada (Finn the Human), John DiMaggio (Jake the Dog), Tom Kenny (The Ice King), Hynden Walch (Princess Bubblegum), and Olivia Olson (Marceline the Vampire Queen). Ward provided the voice for several minor characters, including Lumpy Space Princess. Former storyboard artist Niki Yang voices the sentient video game console BMO in English, as well as Jake's girlfriend Lady Rainicorn in Korean.[243] Polly Lou Livingston, a friend of Pendleton Ward's mother, Bettie Ward, voices the small elephant, Tree Trunks.[244][245][246] Jessica DiCicco voices Flame Princess, Finn's ex-girlfriend and the sovereign of the Fire Kingdom.[247][248] Andy Milonakis voices N.E.P.T.R., a sentient robot who makes and throws pies.[249][250] Several episodes also feature The Lich, the series' principal antagonist. The Lich's demonic form is voiced by Ron Perlman.[251] The Adventure Time cast recorded their lines together to capture more natural-sounding dialogue among the characters. Hynden Walch has described these group sessions as akin to "doing a play reading—a really, really out there play."[252]

Guest voices were provided by actors, musicians, artists, and others. Andy Daly returned as the King of Ooo and Paul Scheer as Toronto in the season premiere "Bonnie and Neddy".[253] Daly would go on to be featured in other season seven episodes as well, like "Varmints", "Mama Said", "May I Come In?", "Take Her Back", and "The Dark Cloud".[254][255][256][257][258] "Bonnie & Neddy" also features supervising director Andres Salaff voicing Neddy.[253] Anne Heche returned to voice the titular character in "Cherry Cream Soda", and storyline writer Jack Pendarvis reprised his role as Root Beer Guy.[259][260] Pendarvis returned in the episode "Mama Said", with storyboard artist Ako Castuera as the voice of Canyon.[255] The miniseries features Sugar as Marceline's mother, Ava Acres as a young Marceline, Rebecca Romijn as The Empress, Billy Brown as the Vampire King, Paul Williams as the Hierophant, Ron Funches as the Fool, Beau Billingslea as the Moon, and Kyle Kinane as Cloud Dance.[261][262][263] "The More You Moe, the Moe You Know" features Chuck McCann reprising his role as Moe, and guest stars Thu Tran as AMO.[264] Paget Brewster and Ron Lynch return in "Summer Showers" and voice Viola and Mr. Pig, respectively.[265] In "Angel Face", Kyla Rae Kowalewski reprises her role as Me-Mow.[266] "Weird Al" Yankovic returns as Banana Man in "President Porpoise is Missing", with James Urbaniak as Vice President Blowfish.[267] Kevin Michael Richardson appears in "Bad Jubies", lending his voice to an automated storm alert and an aggressive storm.[268] In "King's Ransom", storyboard artist Tom Herpich reprises the role of Mr. Fox.[269] Max Charles appears in "Scamps", voicing Hugo the chocolate-dipped marshmallow.[270] "Crossover" features Kumail Nanjiani and James Kyson reprising their roles of Prismo and Big Destiny, respectively; Lou Ferrigno appears in the same episode, playing Bobby, an alternate universe variant of the hero Billy.[271] In "Flute Spell", Jenny Slate voices Huntress Wizard and Steve Agee voices Science Cat.[272] Tunde Adebimpe, the lead singer from the band TV on the Radio, appears in "The Thin Yellow Line", voicing Banana Guard 16.[273]

Various other characters are voiced by Tom Kenny, Dee Bradley Baker, Maria Bamford, Steve Little, Kent Osborne, and Melissa Villaseñor.[243][274]

Broadcast and reception

Broadcast

As with the sixth season,[275] the seventh season of Adventure Time featured several "bomb weeks", where new episodes debuted each day. During the first of these, which ran from November 2–6, 2015, the episodes "Bonnie & Neddy" through "Football" aired.[276] During the second week-long string of episodes, which ran from November 16–19, 2015, the eight-episode Stakes story-arc was aired as a miniseries.[277] The third and final bomb started on January 11, 2016 with "Angel Face" and ended on January 15 with "King's Ransom".[278]

Ratings

The season debuted on November 2, 2015, with the episode "Bonnie & Neddy". This episode was viewed by 1.07 million viewers and scored a 0.3 Nielsen rating in the 18- to 49-year-old demographic—meaning that it was seen by 0.3 percent of all households aged 18–49 who were watching television at the time.[279] This marked a drop from the previous season finale, which was seen by 1.55 million viewers,[207] and it marked a decrease of over two million viewers when compared with the previous season opener.[169] Nevertheless, the miniseries Stakes saw an uptick in viewers, with the first two episodes scoring a 0.4 Nielsen rating in the 18- to 49-year-old demographic and being watched by 1.87 million viewers.[280] During the week that Stakes aired, Adventure Time was able to hold a 0.4 Nielsen rating in the 18- to 49-year-old demographic and attain viewership numbers over 1.7 million for each episode.[280][281][282][283] The season finale, "The Thin Yellow Line", was watched by 1.15 million viewers and scored a 0.28 Nielsen rating in the 18- to 49-year-old demographic, making it the lowest-rated season finale for the show at the time,[284] and making the season as a whole the first in the series to fail to hit the two-million viewer mark for any episode.

Reviews and accolades

The A.V. Club writer Oliver Sava reviewed all of the episodes, grading each with a different letter grade; Stakes was collectively awarded a B, and the rest of the season received two C's, nine B's, and seven A's.[285][286]

Stakes was met with mostly positive reviews. A wide variety of critics applauded the miniseries for its philosophical musings, with Charlie Jane Anders of io9 arguing that it is a meditation on the concept of change, and Heather Hogan of Autostraddle proposing that the miniseries is a commentary on depression.[287][288] Many critics also applauded Sugar's song, "Everything Stays".[289][290][291][292] Some critics, however, felt that the miniseries did not live up to expectations.[291][292]

At the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2016, the episode "The Hall of Egress" was nominated for a Short-format Animation.[293] Herpich and Jason Kolowski each won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, for their work on "Stakes Part 8: The Dark Cloud" and "Bad Jubies", respectively.[294] In late 2016, "Bad Jubies" won an Annie Award for Best Animated Television/Broadcast Production for Children.[295] Kirsten Lepore was nominated for Outstanding Achievement, Directing and Jason Kolowski was nominated for Outstanding Achievement, Production Design for this same episode.[296]

Notes

  1. ^ David C. Smith storyboarded the final act, but is credited only as revisionist.[74]
  2. ^ Larry Leichliter served as director for the first part of the season, before the title was phased out solely in favor of "supervising director".[110]
  3. ^ On the credit screen for the episode "Davey", it is stated that the episode was storyboarded by Jesse Moynihan and Skyler Page. However, this is erroneous, and the episode was actually storyboarded by Page and Somvilay Xayaphone, according to Pendleton Ward.[117]
  4. ^ According to Rebecca Sugar, Adam Muto also contributed "additional scenes" to the episode and "did a lot on this one and put it over the top."[125]
  5. ^ "Evergreen" first aired on November 10, 2014 on Cartoon Network in Latin America.[164] "Astral Plane" was first uploaded on December 24, 2014 onto Cartoon Network's official Brazilian website.[165] "The Visitor" first aired on February 3, 2015 on Cartoon Network in South Korea.[166] "Friends Forever" and "Jermaine" aired on Cartoon Network in Latin America on April 6, 2015 and April 13, 2015 respectively.[167] However, because this field specifically refers to domestic airdates, the information here will denote when these episodes first aired in the United States.
  6. ^ a b c The two halves of the season seven episode "The More You Moe, The Moe You Know" were produced as two separate episodes, each with its own production code.[302][303] However, the official season seven DVD counts the two parts of "The More You Moe, The Moe You Know" as making up a single, collective episode, resulting in the DVD packaging listing only 25 episodes.[304] "The More You Moe, The Moe You Know" is being listed here as comprising two episodes to be consistent with the treatment of previous two-parters (e.g., season five's "Lemonhope", season three's "Holly Jolly Secrets").[305][306]
  7. ^ In the past, Adam Muto (the series' showrunner) had explicitly referred to "Preboot"/"Reboot" as being the collective finale to season seven.[216] This ordering of the season was delineated by an image that hung in Muto's office, which listed episodes "Bonnie & Neddy" through "Reboot" as belonging to season seven.[217]
  8. ^ Information regarding story development and storyboard artists is taken from the opening credits of the season's twenty-six episodes.

List of episodes

The eighth season of Adventure Time, an American animated television series created by Pendleton Ward, premiered on Cartoon Network on March 26, 2016, and concluded on February 2, 2017, and was produced by Frederator Studios and Cartoon Network Studios. It follows the adventures of Finn, a human boy, and his best friend and adoptive brother Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shape and size at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, where they interact with the other main characters of the show: Princess Bubblegum, The Ice King, Marceline the Vampire Queen, Lumpy Space Princess, BMO, and Flame Princess.

Tom Herpich, Steve Wolfhard, Jesse Moynihan, Laura Knetzger, Kris Mukai, Lyle Partridge, Graham Falk, Charmaine Verhagen, Sam Alden, Pendleton Ward, Seo Kim, Somvilay Xayaphone, Hanna K. Nyström, Ako Castuera, Aleks Sennwald, Polly Guo, Kent Osborne, and Adam Muto storyboarded and wrote the season. The miniseries Islands, which follows Finn, Jake, BMO (voiced by Niki Yang), and Susan Strong (voiced by Jackie Buscarino) as they leave Ooo and travel across the ocean to solve the mystery of Finn's past, aired during this season. It also features guest animators Alex and Lindsay Small-Butera (who worked on "Beyond the Grotto") and James Baxter (who worked on "Horse and Ball").

The season debuted with the episode "Broke His Crown", which was watched by 1.13 million viewers marking a slight decrease from the previous season finale, "The Thin Yellow Line", which was seen by 1.15 million viewers. "Islands Part 8: The Light Cloud," the eighth-season finale, was watched by 1 million viewers, making it the lowest-rated Adventure Time season finale at the time. Critical reception to the season was mostly positive, with The A.V. Club writer Oliver Sava expressing pleasant bemusement that the show's quality had not suffered despite this season being its eighth. Critics were also complimentary towards the Islands miniseries: In April 2017, Common Sense Media awarded the miniseries "The Common Sense Seal", and at the 69th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards in 2017, the Islands episode "Imaginary Resources" won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation. Several compilation DVDs that contain episodes from the season have been released, and a set containing the entire season was released on September 4, 2018.

Development

Concept

The series follows the adventures of Finn the Human, a human boy, and his best friend Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shape, grow, and shrink at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, where they interact with the other major characters, including: Princess Bubblegum, The Ice King, Marceline the Vampire Queen, Lumpy Space Princess, BMO, and Flame Princess. Common storylines revolve around Finn and Jake discovering strange creatures, dealing with the antagonistic, but misunderstood, Ice King, and battling monsters in order to help others.[2] Multi-episode story arcs for this season include the introduction of the character Fern,[3] and Finn meeting his mother and learning about what became of humanity.[4]

Production

This was the last season to feature long-serving storyboard artist Jesse Moynihan.

On July 7, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter announced that the series had been renewed for an eighth season.[1] The season's storyline writers included Jack Pendarvis, Adam Muto, Kent Osborne, and Ashly Burch.[5] Originally, the show's seventh season was supposed to comprise the episodes "Bonnie & Neddy" through "Reboot",[a] and its eighth season was supposed to include the episodes "Two Swords" through "Three Buckets",[b] but when it came time to upload the seventh season onto streaming sites, Cartoon Network chose to end the season with its 26th episode, "The Thin Yellow Line."[10] Consequently, the episodes "Broke His Crown" through "Reboot" (which had originally been ordered as the last episodes of the show's seventh season) and the episodes "Two Swords" through the Islands miniseries (which had originally been ordered as the beginning of the show's eighth season) were combined to form the show's official eighth season. This new episode count was cemented by the release of the complete seventh season DVD on July 18, 2017, which included episodes up until "The Thin Yellow Line",[11] as well as the release of the complete eighth season on the Cartoon Network website.[c]

This season's episodes were produced in a process similar to those of the previous seasons. Each episode was outlined in two-to-three pages that contained the necessary plot information.[13] These outlines were then handed to storyboard artists, who created full storyboards.[14] Design and coloring were done at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, California, and animation was handled overseas in South Korea by Rough Draft Korea and Saerom Animation.[15][16][17] Continuing a tradition that started with the fifth season episode "A Glitch is a Glitch", this season also features the work of guest animators. "Beyond the Grotto" features 7 minutes of animation courtesy of Alex and Lindsay Small-Butera, a husband and wife duo known for their web series Baman Piderman,[18] and the episode "Horse and Ball" features animation courtesy of James Baxter. He had previously provided guest animation for the fifth-season episode "James Baxter the Horse". In both episodes, James Baxter the animator lends his voice to the equine character of the same name.[19]

Storyboard artists who worked on this season include: Tom Herpich, Steve Wolfhard, Jesse Moynihan, Laura Knetzger, Kris Mukai, Lyle Partridge, Graham Falk, Charmaine Verhagen, Sam Alden, Pendleton Ward, Seo Kim, Somvilay Xayaphone, Hanna K. Nyström, Ako Castuera, Aleks Sennwald, Polly Guo, Kent Osborne, and Adam Muto.[d] This was the final season to feature several long-serving storyboard artists and production crew members. Moynihan left the show after completing "Normal Man" to finish his web comic Forming.[20][21][22] Finally, supervising director Andres Salaff left after this season to storyboard on Cartoon Network's series Uncle Grandpa.[23] Conversely, the season also saw the return of former storyboard artist Ako Castuera (who returned to storyboard the episode "Broke His Crown" with Nyström before working as a storyboard revisionist, starting with "Two Swords").[24][25] and former storyboard artist and creative director Cole Sanchez (who took the position of one of the series' supervising directors starting with "Two Swords").[26][27]

Miniseries

During the eighth season of Adventure Time, the miniseries Islands aired at the end of January and the beginning of February 2017.[28] This event was first hinted at before the airing of the first Adventure Time miniseries Stakes (2015) when head story writer Kent Osborne revealed that the show would likely produce several more miniseries.[29] Islands tells the story of Finn, Jake, BMO (voiced by Niki Yang) and Susan Strong (voiced by Jackie Buscarino) leaving Ooo and traveling across the ocean to solve the mystery of Finn's past. During their trip, they encounter various creatures, new friends, and a variety of mysterious islands. The voyage culminates with a trip to Founder's Island, where Finn learns what happened to the rest of the human race and meets his mother, Minerva (voiced by Sharon Horgan).[30]

Cast

The season's voice actors include: Jeremy Shada (Finn the Human), John DiMaggio (Jake the Dog), Tom Kenny (The Ice King), Hynden Walch (Princess Bubblegum), and Olivia Olson (Marceline the Vampire Queen). Ward himself provides the voice for several minor characters, including Lumpy Space Princess. Former storyboard artist Niki Yang voices the sentient video game console BMO in English, as well as Jake's girlfriend Lady Rainicorn in Korean.[31] Polly Lou Livingston, a friend of Pendleton Ward's mother, Bettie Ward, plays the voice of the small elephant Tree Trunks.[32][33][34] Jessica DiCicco voices Flame Princess, Finn's ex-girlfriend and the sovereign of the Fire Kingdom.[35][36] Andy Milonakis voices N.E.P.T.R., a sentient robot who makes and throws pies.[37][38] Justin Roiland provides the voice of the Earl of Lemongrab.[39] Several episodes, including most of the episodes in the Islands miniseries, feature Jackie Buscarino, who voices Susan Strong.[4] The Adventure Time cast records their lines together as opposed to doing it individually. This is to capture more natural sounding dialogue among the characters. Hynden Walch has described these group session as akin to "doing a play reading—a really, really out there play."[40]

Several guest stars lent their voices to Adventure Time characters for the very first time this season, including Lauren Lapkus (left) and Lennon Parham (right).

In addition to the regular cast members, episodes feature guest voices from a range of professions, including actors, musicians, and artists. In the season opener "Broke His Crown", both Lena Dunham and Pamela Adlon reprise their characters Betty and Gunter the dinosaur.[41] Dan Mintz, Henry Rollins, and Laura Silverman return to reprise their roles as T.V., Bob, and Ethel in "Lady Rainicorn of the Crystal Dimension". This episode also features former storyboard artist Bert Youn and comedian Fred Stoller voicing the rainicorns Lee and Roy.[42] The episode "I Am a Sword" guest stars Amy Sedaris, Agee, and Melinda Hill; Sedaris plays Bandit Princess, Agee plays a Merchant and Science Cat, and Hill plays Space Bear and Sharon the spiky person.[43] Storyline writer Ashly Burch plays Bun Bun in the titular episode, which also features Keith David reprising his role as the former Flame King.[44][45] In "Elemental", Lauren Lapkus is introduced as the voice of ice elemental, Patience St. Pim.[46] "Five Short Tables" sees the return of Madeleine Martin, Roz Ryan, Donald Glover, Grey DeLisle, and Emo Philips; they voice Fionna, Cake, Marshall Lee, Ice Queen, and Cuber. The episode also guest stars Hannibal Buress as Flame Prince, Crispin Freeman as Turtle Prince and Ice President, Keith Ferguson as Prince Gumball (standing in lieu of the character's original voice actor, Neil Patrick Harris, who was unavailable due to prior commitments), and Elle Newlands as Butterscotch Butler.[47][48][49] "The Music Hole" features several guest actors, including Ashley Eriksson as the titular Music Hole, and Jackie Buscarino as Susan Strong.[50][51] Alia Shawkat voices Charlie, Rich Sommer voices Grand Prix, and Reggie Watts voices the turtle announcer in "Daddy-Daughter Card Wars".[52][53] "Preboot" sees the return of Buscarino as Susan Strong and Collin Dean as Tiffany; the episode also introduces Lennon Parham as Dr. Gross.[54] Rainn Wilson reprises his role as Rattleballs, as well as voicing the adult version of Sparkle in "Reboot".[55] The episode "Two Swords" introduces the character of Fern, voiced by Hayden Ezzy.[56] The next episode, "Do No Harm", sees both Jeff Bennett and Hill reprise their roles as the Grass Wizard and Doctor Princess, respectively.[57] In "Wheels", Marc Evan Jackson reprises his role as Kim Kil Whan, and Rae Gray guest stars as Jake's granddaughter, Bronwyn.[58] Ron Lynch returns as Mr. Pig in "High Strangeness".[59] "Horse & Ball" features British animator James Baxter, who voices the horse of the same name.[60] Alan Tudyk returns to voice the character Chatsberry in "Jelly Beans Have Power".[61] The Islands miniseries features Josh Fadem as Whipple the sea-dragon, Helena Mattsson as Alva, Reggie Watts as Vinny, Jasika Nicole as Frieda, Livvy Stubenrauch as young Kara/Susan, Sharon Horgan as Finn's mother Minerva, and Laraine Newman as the Widow. The miniseries also sees Lennon Parham reprise her role as Dr. Gross and Stephen Root return to voice Finn's father, Martin.[4]

Other characters are voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, Maria Bamford, Steve Little, and Melissa Villaseñor.[31]

Broadcast and reception

Broadcast

Much like the sixth and seventh seasons,[62][63] the eighth season of Adventure Time featured several "bomb" weeks, or weeks when new episodes debuted every day. The first of these began on January 23, 2017, with "Two Swords"/"Do No Harm" and concluded on January 27, 2017, with "Jelly Beans Have Power".[64] The second week-long string of episodes occurred between January 30 and February 2, 2017, during which the whole of Islands aired.[65]

Ratings

The season debuted on March 26, 2016, with the episode "Broke His Crown". It was watched by 1.13 million viewers and scored a 0.3 Nielsen rating in the 18 to 49-year-old demographic. Nielsen ratings are audience measurement systems that determine the audience size and composition of television programming in the United States. In this case the episode was seen by 0.3 percent of all households with viewers aged between 18 and 49 years old.[66] This marked a slight decrease in viewership compared to the season seven finale, "The Thin Yellow Line", which was seen by 1.15 million individuals, but it marked a marginal increase compared to the previous season's premiere, "Bonnie & Neddy" which had 1.07 million viewers.[66][67][68] The season concluded with the eight-part miniseries Islands. This string of episodes saw an uptick in viewers, with the first two episodes scoring a 0.3 Nielsen rating in the 18- to 49-year-old demographic and being watched by 1.2 million viewers.[69] During the week that Islands aired, Adventure Time attained viewership numbers over 1 million for every episode.[69][70][71][72] Despite this, "Islands Part 8: The Light Cloud" was still the lowest-rated finale for the show at the time of its airing.[72]

Reviews and accolades

In a review for the episode "The Music Hole", The A.V. Club writer Oliver Sava wrote, "I love that after seven seasons the show hasn't lost sight of what makes it so compelling to such a wide audience."[73] Each episode was also graded by The A.V. Club with a different letter grade; Islands received an A, and the rest of the season received nine B's, and nine A's.[74][75] The A.V. Club did not review "Daddy-Daughter Card Wars" because episodic coverage of the series was intended to stop following the airing of "The Music Hole".[73] However, after the airing of "Preboot" and "Reboot", their episode coverage returned due to popular demand.[76]

Islands was met with mostly positive reviews. Many critics—such as Zack Smith of Newsarama and Oliver Sava of The A.V. Club—applauded how the miniseries started with quirky adventure episodes before culminating in an emotional finale.[77][78] Other critics complimented the greater development of the miniseries' characters.[78][79][80] Zach Blumenfeld of Paste Magazine complimented the miniseries' philosophical musings, which he argued "takes on shades of Black Mirror and existentialism to cast a critical eye on technology and the human spirit."[81]

In April 2017, Common Sense Media awarded the Islands miniseries The Common Sense Seal, calling it a "beautiful animated miniseries [that] explores a deep backstory."[82] In July 2017, the Islands episode "Imaginary Resources" won a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation at the 69th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.[83][84]

Home media

Warner Home Video released several DVD compilations that contain episodes from the eighth season. The first was Card Wars, released on July 12, 2016.[104] The second release, Islands—which included all of the titular miniseries—was released on DVD on January 24, 2017.[105] This release was notable because it marked the second time that Adventure Time episodes had been released on DVD before officially airing on Cartoon Network. The first instance was the release of the episode "Princess Day" on the DVD of the same name on July 29, 2014, before it first aired on TV on July 31, 2014).[85][106]

US release

The collective DVD cover for the domestic release of seasons 8, 9, and 10.

A DVD set that includes season eight along with seasons nine and ten was released in the United States on September 4, 2018.[107]

Notes

  1. ^ In the past, Adam Muto (the series' showrunner) had explicitly referred to "Preboot"/"Reboot" as being the collective finale to season seven.[6] This ordering of the season was delineated by an image that hung in Muto's office, which listed episodes "Bonnie & Neddy" through "Reboot" as belonging to season seven.[7]
  2. ^ The official Adventure Time production blog announced in January 2017 that "Two Swords"/"Do No Harm" collectively made up the eighth season premiere,[8] and Adam Muto later explicitly confirmed that "Three Buckets" was envisioned as the season eight finale prior to "the official season divisions [having been] moved around."[9] This means that episodes which aired in between these (e.g. "Two Swords" through the Islands miniseries) were originally considered part of season eight.
  3. ^ On Cartoon Network's official webpage, "Broke His Crown" is explicitly listed as the first episode of season eight, and the episode "Orb" is explicitly listed as the first episode of season nine, suggesting that the episodes that aired between these two now make up the show's eighth season.[12]
  4. ^ Information regarding story development and storyboard artists is taken from the opening credits of the season's twenty-seven episodes.
  5. ^ The Islands miniseries was released on DVD and made available for download on iTunes and Amazon.com on January 24.[85] However, because this field specifically refers to episode airdates, the information here will denote when these eight episodes first aired on Cartoon Network.
  6. ^ Seven minutes of this episode were animated and directed by Alex & Lindsay Small-Butera.[88]

List of episodes

The ninth season of Adventure Time, an American animated television series created by Pendleton Ward, premiered on the Cartoon Network on April 21, 2017 and concluded on July 21, 2017, and was produced by Frederator Studios and Cartoon Network Studios. The season follows the adventures of Finn (a human boy) and his best friend and adoptive brother, Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shape and size at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, where they interact with the other main characters of the show: Princess Bubblegum, The Ice King, Marceline the Vampire Queen, Lumpy Space Princess, BMO, and Flame Princess.

The season was storyboarded and written by Adam Muto, Sam Alden, Polly Guo, Seo Kim, Somvilay Xayaphone, Laura Knetzger, Steve Wolfhard, Tom Herpich, Graham Falk, Kent Osborne, Hanna K. Nyström, and Aleks Sennwald. During this season the miniseries Elements aired, which follows Finn, Jake, and BMO after they return home to discover that extreme elemental magic has turned Ooo into a dystopia. Finn and Jake join Ice King (voiced by Tom Kenny), Betty (voiced by Felicia Day), and Lumpy Space Princess (voiced by Pendleton Ward) to set things straight. The season also features guest animators Alex and Lindsay Small-Butera, who worked on "Ketchup".

It began with "Orb", which was watched by 0.71 million viewers (a decrease from the previous-season finale, "Islands Part 8: The Light Cloud", which was seen by one million viewers). The ninth-season finale, "Three Buckets", was watched by 0.85 million (the lowest-rated Adventure Time season finale at the time). Critical reception of the season was mainly positive, with the episodes making up Elements largely well-received. For her work on the episode "Ketchup", Lindsay Small-Butera won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation at the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards. A set containing the entire season was released on September 4, 2018.

Development

Concept

The series follows the adventures of Finn the Human (a boy) and his best friend, Jake, a dog with magical powers to change shape, grow, and shrink at will. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo, where they interact with the other major characters: Princess Bubblegum, the Ice King, Marceline the Vampire Queen, Lumpy Space Princess, BMO, and Flame Princess. Common storylines revolve around Finn and Jake discovering strange creatures, dealing with the antagonistic-but-misunderstood Ice King, and battling monsters to help others.[2] Multi-episode story arcs for this season include Finn and Jake undoing extreme elemental magic which had transformed Ooo into a dystopia while they were away at sea,[3] and Fern (Finn's grass-based doppelgänger) struggling with his identity and eventually succumbing to evil impulses.[4]

Production

A smiling, squinting Ghostshrimp, in a white jacket with headphones around his neck
Former lead background artist Ghostshrimp returned to work on several episodes this season.

This season's episodes were originally ordered as part of the series' eighth season. With the release of the seventh season DVD, Cartoon Network began re-arranging the season divisions; the seventh season now consisted of "Bonnie & Neddy" through "The Thin Yellow Line".[5] "Broke His Crown" through "Reboot" (which had originally been ordered as the last episodes of the seventh season)[a] and the episodes from "Two Swords" through the Islands miniseries (which had originally been ordered as the beginning of the eighth season)[b] were combined to form the series' eighth season.[10] "Orb" through "Three Buckets" (which had originally been ordered as the end of season eight)[c] were then considered by the network to constitute the series' ninth season.[d]

The season's episodes were produced similarly to previous seasons. They began as simple two-to-three-page outlines with necessary plot information.[12] These outlines were then given to storyboard artists, who expanded the rough outline into a full storyboard.[13] The episodes' design and coloring were done at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, California, and Rough Draft Korea or Saerom Animation created the animation in South Korea.[14][15][16] Continuing a tradition which began with the fifth-season episode "A Glitch Is a Glitch", this season also featured guest animators. "Ketchup"'s animation is by Alex and Lindsay Small-Butera, a husband-and-wife team known for their web series Baman Piderman.[17][18] The Small-Buteras had previously contributed animation to the eighth-season episode, "Beyond the Grotto".[19]

The season's main storyline writers included Jack Pendarvis, Adam Muto, Ashly Burch, Osborne, and Julia Pott.[20] According to Pendarvis, after Burch left following the eighth season "Julia parachuted in at perhaps the most mind-boggling moment in the sweeping arc of the series just totally undaunted, and showed incredible spirit and ingeniousness that encouraged us to press forward."[21] Storyboard artists who worked on this season included Adam Muto, Sam Alden, Polly Guo, Seo Kim, Somvilay Xayaphone, Laura Knetzger, Steve Wolfhard, Tom Herpich, Graham Falk, Kent Osborne, Hanna K. Nyström, and Aleks Sennwald.[e] Ghostshrimp, the series' former lead background designer, returned to work on background pieces for "Abstract", "Fionna and Cake and Fionna", and "Whispers".[f] Ghostshrimp left the show after the fourth season, but returned to draw backgrounds for the seventh-season miniseries Stakes.[22][23]

Miniseries

A miniseries, Elements, aired during late April 2017 as part of season nine.[24] It was first announced on March 31, 2017, by Cartoon Network during the unveiling of their 2017–18 program lineup.[24] Elements follows Finn, Jake, and BMO after they return home to discover that elemental magic has turned Ooo into a dystopia. Finn and Jake join the Ice King (voiced by Tom Kenny), Betty (voiced by Felicia Day), and Lumpy Space Princess (voiced by Pendleton Ward) to set things straight.

Cast

The season's voice actors included Jeremy Shada (Finn the Human), John DiMaggio (Jake the Dog), Tom Kenny (the Ice King), Hynden Walch (Princess Bubblegum), and Olivia Olson (Marceline the Vampire Queen). Ward voiced several minor characters, including Lumpy Space Princess. Former storyboard artist Niki Yang voiced the sentient video-game console BMO in English and Jake's girlfriend, Lady Rainicorn, in Korean.[25] Polly Lou Livingston, a friend of Pendleton Ward's mother, Bettie Ward, voiced the small elephant Tree Trunks.[26][27] Jessica DiCicco voiced Flame Princess, Finn's ex-girlfriend and ruler of the Fire Kingdom.[28] Andy Milonakis voices N.E.P.T.R., a sentient robot who makes (and throws) pies.[29][30] The Lich, Adventure Time's principal antagonist, was voiced by Ron Perlman in his demonic form[31] and Ethan Maher in his Sweet P form.[32] The cast records their lines together (rather than separately) for more natural-sounding dialogue. Hynden Walch described the group sessions as akin to "doing a play reading—a really, really out-there play."[33]

Several guest stars voiced Adventure Time characters for the first time this season, including Felicia Day (left) and Chelsea Peretti.

In addition to the regular cast members, episodes have guest voices by individuals from a range of professions, including actors, musicians, and artists. Tom Scharpling reprised his role as Jake's brother, Jermaine, and Thu Tran returned as AMO in "Orb".[34] Felicia Day voiced the Ice King's fiancée, Betty Grof, in the Elements miniseries; in previous episodes, Betty was played by Lena Dunham).[3][35] Hayden Ezzy voiced Fern, Ethan Maher voiced Sweet P, Ron Lynch returned as Mr. Pig, Lauren Lapkus reprised her role as Patience St. Pim, Dana Snyder voiced the Life-Giving Magus, Cameron Esposito appears as Carroll the cloud woman, storyboard artist Tom Herpich voices Mr. Fox, Jeff Bennett voiced Choose Goose, John Hodgman reprised his role as Elder Plops, Andy Samberg returned to voice Party Pat, and Andrew Daly voiced Wyatt in the miniseries.[3][36] Andy Merrill reprised his role as James, and Scharpling returned in "Abstract".[37] In "Ketchup", J. G. Quintel voices an unnamed blue bird.[38] "Fionna and Cake and Fionna" saw the return of Madeleine Martin as Fionna and Roz Ryan as Cake. Chelsea Peretti voiced the Queen of Ooo and Charlotte Newhouse voiced a fake Fionna.[39] In "Three Buckets", Fred Melamed voices Uncle Gumbald.[40] Other characters were voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, Maria Bamford, Steve Little, and Melissa Villaseñor.[25]

Broadcast and reception

Broadcast

Much like the sixth, seventh, and eighth seasons,[41][42][43] the ninth season of Adventure Time had several episode "bombs" in which a number of episodes premiered in a relatively-short time. The first string of new episodes (including Elements) aired between January 30 and February 2, 2017.[44] The second began on July 17, 2017, with "Abstract", and concluded on July 21 with "Three Buckets".[45]

Ratings

The ninth season premiered on television on April 21, 2017, with "Orb", although the episode had been released on the Cartoon Network phone app a week earlier.[46] Seen by 0.71 million viewers, it had a 0.19 Nielsen rating in the 18- to 49-year-old demographic (Nielsen ratings are audience measurement systems for audience size and composition of television programming in the United States; the episode was seen by 0.19 percent of all households aged 18 to 49).[47] This was a decrease from "Islands Part 8: The Light Cloud" (the season-eight finale, seen by one million viewers) and the previous season's premiere, "Broke His Crown" (seen by 1.13 million).[47][48][49] Elements had a slight uptick in viewers, with each episode watched by just under one million people.[50][51][52][53] However, season 9 was the first season to fail to hit the one-million viewer mark for any episode, which was a dramatic decrease from the often over two-million viewers the show regularly enjoyed up until season 6. The season finale, "Three Buckets", was watched by 0.85 million viewers and had a 0.23 Nielsen rating in the 18- to 49-year-old demographic (making it the series' lowest-rated season finale).[54]

Reviews and accolades

The season was praised by critics. Oliver Sava of The A.V. Club reviewed and graded each episode with a letter grade; the Elements miniseries received a B, and the rest of the season received three Bs and three As.[55][56]

Elements was particularly praised. According to Sava, the miniseries helped return the viewers to the land of Ooo and re-center and reconfigure the characters' central relationships.[57] Smith said that the miniseries format permitted "a stronger sense of focus ... with every episode giving the sense that the story is building to a larger conclusion".[58] Paste magazine's Zack Blumenfeld praised the miniseries, writing that Elements "is superior to and more cohesive than both Stakes and Islands, simultaneously a return to Adventure Time's surrealist roots and an emotional step forward".[59]

For her work on the episode "Ketchup", Lindsay Small-Butera won an "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation" Emmy at the 70th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, making it the show's sixth win in this category.[g][61]

Notes

  1. ^ In the past, Adam Muto (the series' showrunner) had referred to "Preboot"/"Reboot" as the collective finale of season seven.[6] This ordering of the season was illustrated by an image hanging in Muto's office, which listed "Bonnie & Neddy" through "Reboot" as part of season seven.[7]
  2. ^ The Adventure Time production blog announced in January 2017 that "Two Swords" and "Do No Harm" made up the eighth-season premiere,[8] and Adam Muto confirmed that "Three Buckets" was envisioned as the season-eight finale before "the official season divisions [having been] moved around".[9] Episodes which aired between them (e.g. "Two Swords" through the Islands miniseries) were originally considered part of season eight.
  3. ^ "Two Swords" and "Do No Harm" were originally announced as the eighth-season premiere,[8] and "Three Buckets" was envisioned as the eighth-season finale.[9] Episodes which aired between them (e.g. "Orb" through "Three Buckets") were originally considered part of season eight.
  4. ^ On Cartoon Network's website, "Orb" is listed as the first episode of season nine and "The Wild Hunt" is listed as the first episode of season ten (suggesting that the episodes which aired between them now make up the show's ninth season).[11]
  5. ^ Information regarding story development and storyboard artists is taken from the opening credits of the season's episodes.
  6. ^ Information regarding background art is taken from the end credits of the episodes "Abstract", "Fionna and Cake and Fionna", and "Whispers".
  7. ^ Previous winners included Andy Ristaino (2013), Nick Jennings (2014), Tom Herpich (2015, 2016), and Jason Kolowski (2016).[60]
  8. ^ "Orb" was released through the Cartoon Network phone App on April 14,[46] the Elements miniseries was released for download via iTunes on April 18,[62] and "Abstract" through "Three Buckets" were released via the Cartoon Network phone app on July 14.[17] However, because this field specifically refers to episode airdates, the information here will denote when these fourteen episodes first aired on Cartoon Network.
  9. ^ Three sequences in this episode were animated and directed by Alex & Lindsay Small-Butera.[17]
