Replaceable fair use File:Westerplatte burning.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Westerplatte burning.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mormegil (talk) 17:31, 10 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Halibutt, I've declined the speedy for being replaceable, however I've added a tag for missing rationales. PhilKnight (talk) 11:41, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Kazimierz Fajans
Hi Halibutt, you started the article on him back in 2005, and you decided to write his name Kazimierz. I found a lot of his publications and all of the ones I looked at were signed with Kasimir. I think this is the name he self used for the most of his life. He is recognized also mostly under that name, I think. The article should reflect this, I think. A comment would be nice, you might have more knowledge on him. --Stone (talk) 17:41, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks! The naming of articles is very critical. The Copernicus example is a bad example for me. The wikirule that the most comon name should be used is sometimes a problem for the nationalist lobby groups. --Stone (talk) 12:02, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
- Rules which are 100% followed are always ending up in a stupid solution for a non existing problem. The German wiki uses a book with the mostly used German expresions and if the article name is above level 20 (I never remember the numbers right) it is a German expression and has to be written in a way done in Germany. If the expression is below 20 it is a foreign expression and has to be written like in the original language. This led to changes in the article names and some edit wars due to the changes. Stupid and time consuming, but this is always when people have to follow the rule without thinking. The Coperikus, Fritz Pregel and Kazimierz Fajans case have a easy solution, use both names and make clar which name was used by the person and which one was in general use.--Stone (talk) 10:01, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
Erika z Rumii
Dear Halibutt,
Thank you very much for making available the English language translation of Erika z Rumii by Piotr Szubarczyk and Piotr Semków from the Gdańsk office of the Institute of National Remembrance.
It helps a lot to understand the current debate around her person both in here Germany and in Poland.
While most of the article looks factual and well researched, there is one detail which looks odd to me.
On the return of Erike Steinbach's mother Erika Hermann to Germany in early 1945 the article says:
>>she packed her belongings and returned to Hanau in January 1945. The informations of her miraculous salvation from the Wilhelm Gustloff disaster are false. Erika did not want to obtain a ticket for Gustloff since she reached Germany two months before Gustloff started her first voyage on the Gdansk-Germany route.<<
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Hannibal the Wilhelm Gustloff was torpedoed and sank off the Pomeranian coast, (with possibly as many as 9,400 fatalities), on January 30, 1945, as part of the hasty evacuation operation started by the Nazis on January 23, 1945. So the Gustloff can't have made the fatal trip two months after January 1945.
Erika Hermann may have made her decision to leave before the general evacuation operation was ordered on January 23rd, but the calendar tells us that it was very close to it.
This doesn't make her an "expelled" or displaced person of course. She was just a soldiers' spouse evacuated from a war zone.
It seems that the original in Polish language contains the same error on the date of the Gustloff journey, although I can only guess (see http://www.ceeol.com/aspx/getdocument.aspx?logid=5&id=289071383a874b20b95e8e8b41ba9c5d):
Maybe you forward this information to the authors, Piotr Szubarczyk and Piotr Semków
Best Regards

The articles you created: Fryderyk Józef Moszyński, Józef Zeydlitz, Krystian Godfryd Deybel de Hammerau, refer to "Cadet Corps". Was it Cadet Corps (Russia) or something Poland-specific? Authority to use some of your work
Hello Halibutt,
I would like to request your authority to use some of your maps about Poland as I have an interest in Poland and have started my own website about the country. [1]
The site is mainly for education but hopefully it will generate some income for me in the future, but that will be a bonus if it happens!
I would also like any photographs to do with Poland that are non-copyright.

Orphaned non-free image File:Emil Hacha.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Emil Hacha.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. JaGatalk 22:03, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
Głos
Hello there. I was wondering if I could enlist that "proficient nitpicker" side of your contributions on a Polish-related subject that I would stand no chance of approaching myself. While I was writing the Sămănătorul article a while back, I encountered a reference to Głos, and assume from the context that it refers to either an old avatar of the present-day magazine or a completely unrelated defunct publication. The article doesn't explicitly say either. Here's where you come in: in case it's the same magazine, could you add just a bit there on how old it actually is? and in case it's not, could you suggest under what title the potential article is likely to pop up when it does? Many thanks in advance.
Incidentally, since I only noticed it now, am perplexed, and fishing a chance to comment: it's a shame about Piotrus' (partial) retirement, and I hope he will reconsider (I also hope this project will somehow do away with some of the problems that drove him to despair). Dahn (talk) 13:15, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for the quick answer. It seems we're both on the run, so let me just quickly answer your (implied) question: 1886-1905. Kudos. Dahn (talk) 15:55, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
Wow... here I was expecting a stub or some indication on where to point the redlink, and here you give me one full, sound and ironclad article! Congrats, it's simply outstanding (let alone "hope that helps somehow"), and quite simply leaves me in awe. Dahn (talk) 22:33, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
- Noted, and thank you. I've tried my hand at a slight expansion, feel free to rework it if necessary. I remembered I "caught" the term in the original source, wondered if it was worth a separate article, and then wen "hm, let me think about it later". This is a precious stone for my garden.
- If we don't get a chance to talk over the following days, let me squeeze in an anticipatory "Merry Christmas!" Dahn (talk) 15:41, 23 December 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for the words of appreciation (I was actually quite lucky not to have screwed up the article, given that I had only met the term once or twice before and that's as much as I knew of it...; so your validation means a lot) and I'm looking forward to the expansion. Unreferenced BLPs
Hello Halibutt! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 9 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 340 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

File source problem with File:Ostra_Brama22.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Ostra_Brama22.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Mapy II RP
Mam parę uwag do Twoich interesujących map II RP. Narysowałeś ciekawą mapę II RP, którą potem użyłeś w wielu formach do ilustracji różnych wydarzeń politycznych przede wszystkiem z pierwszych lat II RP. Wydaje mi się, że powinieneś przejrzeć jeszcze raz wszystkie te mapy, aby dokonać paru drobnych, ale jednak bardzo istotnych poprawek - lata 1918-1923 to okres, w którym kształtowały się granice II RP i krajów sąsiednich i należy tutaj być niezwykle ostrożnym, bo każdy rok przynosił istotne zmiany (szczególnie Górny Śląsk i Litwa Środkowa obie prowincje przyłączone do Polski w 1922 r.). Oto moje uwagi:
Do poprawki:
- File:PBW March 1919.png
- File:PBW June 1920.png
- File:PBW August 1920.png
- File:PBW December 1919.png
- File:Liniadmowskiego.png
Najlepsze pozdrowienia, Kiejstut9 (talk) 12:49, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

General Josef Sowinski
Hi! In my family there was a legend that General Sowinski is related. Our family originated from Warsaw and the name was Sovinski or Sowinski (changed in the 1920s to our current family name, following emigration to England). I read some of the information about General Sowinski, but did not find any mention of being of Jewish origin (as our family is Jewish). Could uou possibly have more information on this matter?
Thanks, Daniel Saville

You are now a Reviewer
Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Karanacs (talk) 17:28, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I've nominated Henryk Cederbaum, an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article here, where you can improve it if you see fit. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 16:52, 11 July 2010 (UTC) (nominated on behalf of User:Piotrus)
- Halibutt, could you please comment at the DYK nomination thread, Template talk:Did you know#Henryk Cederbaum? There is some confusion regarding the meaning of the suggested hook (hook ALT1) which requires your input for clarification. Thanks, Nsk92 (talk) 11:41, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
DYK for Henryk Cederbaum
On July 14, 2010, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Henryk Cederbaum, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check ) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Hi Halibutt, per the original log here in wp this file was once added by you, author information was however lost or never added. Can you add the author information please and update the old {{PD}} license tag with a new {{PD-user-en|Halibutt}} or another appropriate tag? Thanks, --Martin H. (talk) 00:16, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, it's been 6 years since I re-uploaded the file (from PL wiki to EN wiki) and I don't remember who the original uploader was. //Halibutt 08:49, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
- (Copied your comment back from my talk) I see that my idea that it is your photo was wrong, too bad. Regretably the file wasnt used in pl:Cmentarz Na Rossie w Wilnie and is also not burried somewhere in the version history. Also people who edited the page have, as far as I looked in talkpage histories and talk archives, no information about the image or its original name. If you find any information please add it to the file on Commons, I watch it, otherwise the file will go it way. --Martin H. (talk) 09:23, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Herb wolyn.png
Thank you for uploading File:Herb wolyn.png.

ORP Gryf (Hansa class)
Re the ORP Gryf (Hansa class) article, which you created. There are discrepancies with Mitchell & Sawyer's book on the Empire ships. Whilst M&S are reliable, they are not infallible. Where did you get your info from? A precis of the info in M&S's book can be found at List_of_Empire_ships_(Co–Cy)#Empire_Contees. I intend to expand the article in the next day or so, which may mean removal of info that I can't verify, and addition of that which I can which is not currently in the article. Witaj. Dobrze byłoby to wyjaśnić. Pozdrawiam. Gytha (talk) 23:19, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
Pozdrawiam. Gytha (talk) 09:27, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

Lemkos
Some discussion about Polish-Ukrainian conflicts around the time of WWII are here [2]. One of the points of agreement seems to be that there should be a separate article on Lemkos in regard to these events. I seem to recollect that you wrote some stuff about Lemkos way back when which is relevant here. I'm lazy and time constrained though, so I don't feel like pouring through your 2005 or 2006 or whatever edits to find it though, so, despite the fact you're not very active these days, I was wondering if you could point me to some relevant articles which could serve as a starting point for such an article. The article Florian Siwicki has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Not notable. Fails biography guidelines
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ⋙–Berean–Hunter—► ((⊕)) 03:59, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:106 0665 t.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:106 0665 t.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-enwikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-enwikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. There has been a major revision of the the Service Awards: the edit requirements for the higher levels have been greatly reduced, to make them reasonably attainable.
Because of this, your Service Award level has been changed, and you are now eligible for a higher level. I have taken the liberty of updating your award on your user page.

Schneider arms
Are you an expert on identifying Schneider arms? I started an article on Schneider Coast Defense Train. I was wondering if you could match the artillery used on the train to one of the existing Category:Schneider et Cie arms already listed. The article is just a stub now. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 18:11, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
Monitor. WikiProject Poland Newsletter: Issue 1 (April 2011)
WikiProject Poland Newsletter • April 2011
For our freedom and yours Welcome to our first issue of WikiProject Poland newsletter, the Monitor (named after the first Polish newspaper). Our Project has been operational since 1 June, 2005, and also serves as the Poland-related Wikipedia notice board. I highly recommend watchlisting the Wikipedia:WikiProject Poland page, so you can be aware of the ongoing discussions. We hope you will join us in them, if you haven't done so already! Unlike many other WikiProjects, we are quite active; in this year alone about 40 threads have been started on our discussion page, and we do a pretty good job at answering all issues raised. In addition to a lively encyclopedic, Poland-related, English-language discussion forum, we have numerous useful tools that can be of use to you - and that you could help us maintain and develop:
This is not all; on our page you can find a list of useful templates (including userboxes), awards and other tools! With all that said, how about you join our discussions at WT:POLAND? Surely, there must be something you could help others with, or perhaps you are in need of assistance yourself? You have received this newsletter because you are listed as a [member link] at WikiProject Poland. • Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 21:11, 25 April 2011 (UTC) |

Witaj!

Sorry to bother you on a non-wiki related mattter...
Hello,
I'm really sorry to bother you on a non-wiki related matter, but I saw on your User page that you are a Polish Jew. I have to write a short story for school, and I'm trying to find out if Polish Jews (particularly Polish Reform Jews) have middle names. If Polish Jews do have middle names, is this a recent custom, or have Polish Jews historically followed the custom of having middle names?
Again, I'm sorry to bother you, but I want so much for my story to be accurate, and I don't know who else to ask!
Thank you so, so much for your time. Good sabbath. 86.26.75.252 (talk) 21:44, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Template:Art-pd listed at Redirects for discussion
An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Template:Art-pd. Since you had some involvement with the Template:Art-pd redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion (if you have not already done so). Sfan00 IMG (talk) 12:11, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
