Authority control
Hi there, just for interest, I tend to put {{Authority control}} on any biographical article I stumble across - Wikipedia:Authority control has a bit of background on what it's for. -Kj cheetham (talk) 14:45, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
AFC
Hi, as your account is marked as Autopatrolled, you know you don't need to submit anything via AFC and can just publish to mainspace directly yourself? Articles you create don't require reviewing. :) -Kj cheetham (talk) 20:07, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Kj cheetham: - while I am not writing about close colleagues (or current colleagues), the pages I submit to AfC are those people who I have interacted with at some point in the past. I have been moving pages directly into the mainspace for people where there is no possibility of anyone considering a conflict of interest. --DaffodilOcean (talk) 00:30, 26 October 2021 (UTC)
- Ah, that makes sense in that case. Thanks for clarifying. -Kj cheetham (talk) 07:58, 26 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello, DaffodilOcean,
If you find a draft version of an existing article, it's best just to turn it into a redirect to the main space article rather than deleting the page. Then the information in the page history remains in case the draft has information that could be incorporated into the main article. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 04:01, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
- Liz, I only know how to start a new #REDIRECT. How do I redirect a draft without deleting the contents of the draft? Do I blank the page and then put the #REDIRECT line at the top? DaffodilOcean (talk) 11:58, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

Why did you also delete my statements about why Bers will meet the criteria laid out at WP:PROF? Question for you
DaffodilOcean, I'm not sure if you will see this.
I've done a little bit of editing and contributing of Wikipedia, but some of this site I find super confusing. For example, I couldn't figure out how to message or talk to you. So, I'm giving this a try. Feel free to delete.
I originally wrote this article - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwen_Marston
I thought that I had added third-party sources, but it was initially rejected: Declining submission: bio - Submission is about a person not yet shown to meet notability guidelines (AFCH 0.9.1)
I noticed that you ended up publishing the article. Is it possible to explain what I could have done differently initially to get this article published sooner?
I fear that it was originally rejected because some editors may not understand the value of the quilting craft and the role of many quilting industry pioneers (many of whom are women). I tried to address that by citing articles such as the QuiltFolk article which is a print magazine (not a blog or YouTube): Cox, Meg. "Gwen Marston - Her own fine self" (PDF).
Any insights you could offer me on the editing, creation process would be helpful.
Also, why is Wikipedia's publishing system and infrastructure so arcane and confusing?
Again, thank you for publishing the article. If I didn't publish these questions in the right way, feel free to delete. Thank you.
Finally, is there a somewhat simple way to add photos of Gwen's quilts to this article? Drivincryin (talk) 20:14, 7 May 2022 (UTC)
- Drivincryin - you have found a good way to message me - talk pages are a place to share messages and questions. Now, allow me to address some of your questions.
- You can see the differences between what you wrote on the Gwen Marston page and the information I added here.[1] When you look at that link you will see that I removed all of the YouTube links you had on the page and the all the links to websites that are blogs. I left in the article about her by Meg Cox, but added in additional coverage of her work from the newspapers. You are right that readers may not know about quilting, hence the coverage of Marston in the newspapers is a key part of demonstrating that she is notable.
- In terms of the speed of getting the article on the mainspace, there are no deadlines on Wikipedia. I simply came across the page and found it interesting and worked on it. If I had not done so, perhaps someone else could have made changes. Or, you could have continued to work on the page and address the comments left by the reviewer.
- You can add pictures of her quilts if you yourself take them and upload them at WikiCommons. This process is described here [2].
- Wikipedia does take some getting used to, but it is designed to be a place to share knowledge and not simply gather websites about everyone. Happy editing. DaffodilOcean (talk) 15:40, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you DaffodilOcean. I really appreciate your response and explanations.
- I have a few more questions for you:
- 1. I'm curious if you know of a research tool for finding newspaper articles. I did note the many newspaper citations that you added to the Gwen Marston page.
- 2. Now that those newspaper citations have been added, can I edit and add to the article and use blogs as citations? Or, does Wikipedia discourage using blogs as citations? I understand the need for newspaper and magazines, but quilting (like many other crafts and arts) is now written much more extensively in digital publications vs. quilting magazines (which are now fading in place of online digital publications). Drivincryin (talk) 16:48, 9 May 2022 (UTC)
- Drivincryin - you can apply for access to newspapers.com through the Wikipedia Library, see the information here [3]. You can also search at news.google.com for articles on Marston.
- As for using blogs, Wikipedia discourages the use of blogs and you can read about why here: WP:BLOGS. You can add news information from digital publications, but self-published blogs are frowned upon. DaffodilOcean (talk) 00:27, 10 May 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you again for your help DaffodilOcean.
- Is it possible for you to look at another article that I've written that has been rejected?
- I'm curious, given your knowledge, if the issue is the same one here - lack of citations in newspapers vs. digital media. Drivincryin (talk) 13:56, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- Drivincryin - the information in the top box has links that you can follow to read about why the page was rejected. Specifically I would read about WP:RS to learn about what is a reliable source, and WP:INDEPENDENT which will talk about finding sources that are not written by Wiater. In the case of this page, the fact that Wiater wrote many articles is not of interest, what you should look for are newspaper articles about Wiater. The Janz interview is also not a means to determine notability, see the essay here [4]. At the same time YouTube and IMDB are not considered reliable sources and are to be avoided. DaffodilOcean (talk) 14:56, 11 May 2022 (UTC)

Hey! Saw your recent tweaks to the article Greenland Ice Sheet -- noticing that the lead could be greatly improved to include such things as melting related to climate change, and its role in larger geosystems such as the Thermohaline circulation. Would you like to do that? It seems like it is the kind of work you have been doing. Sadads (talk) 13:14, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
- Sadads - honestly, while I am interested in the topic, I am more focused on the people doing the research. That is why I spent time making sure the correct papers were cited rather than the press releases. DaffodilOcean (talk) 14:02, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

You write that you don't know what do to about the redirect to her father. What you can do is, first, to ask for advice at the Articles for Creation talk page, and an admin may help you with it. What you can do is, second, to tag the redirect with G6 as {{db-afc-move}} to request that the redirect be deleted so that you can complete the move. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:15, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for Your Work on Julie Sze
Much thanks for your work on Julie Sze’s page, and for your work linking to her page on other pages she’s referenced on! It will now be much easier to reference and link to her important work on other wiki pages without editors questioning her notability or expertise (clearly indicative of the wider gender bias problem on wiki). At any rate, thank you for your this! —Hobomok (talk) 02:22, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

Joanne Roberts - possible ref error
Dear DaffodilOcean, Hope is OK to bother you with this. I was looking at the AFD on Joanne Roberts and was looking up things to try and see about notability. The first entry in Selected Readings -(Amin, Ash, and Joanne Roberts. 2008. Community, economic creativity, and organization. Oxford: Oxford University Press.) which I think you might have added might be by another person with a similar/the same name (I thing she is not the same as the Joanne K. Roberts) See here: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/people/5x9xnm/professor-joanne-roberts. Just letting you know. Best wishes (Msrasnw (talk) 11:35, 29 July 2022 (UTC))
- Thanks for the heads up Msrasnw but the point is now moot as the page was deleted after a discussion at WP:AFD. DaffodilOcean (talk) 00:16, 31 July 2022 (UTC)
Katherine Power
Those reviews you have added to the Katherine Power are not reviews. They are classic PR written in that breathless style, "its a great book so buy it", mantra and adding rank content to an article is not the way. I also noticed this is the second time that you've turned at Afd I've posted and started on the article. Are you part of the WP:ARS? I see you have several barnstars for article rescue. scope_creepTalk 10:19, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
- Scope_creep - I am not part of WP:ARS, instead I try to keep an eye on articles (biographies) that come up at AfD. When I think a person might be notable, I sometimes add sources to the article before considering my contribution to the deletion discussion. I still consider myself new to Wikipedia, so I hope this is not a problem. DaffodilOcean (talk) 11:43, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
- No I don't think so. That was excellent work on the composer, Cesarina Ricci de Tingoli that was obviously notable. This article, however, was created by a UPE who was found to be socking to get more of their articles on WP. An abusive practice that went on, over many years. I don't think there is any doubt they either were either paid in kind, or in actual money. Either way it is a crock. The whole article is a PR construct, paid for and written by a UPE. The subject is absolutely transitory, in 10 years time, when she comes out the industry, she will be completly forgetten. They're has been no change in the world for the better, due to her existance, like my existance. That is why I think working to save these, particularly since most of the coverage is manufactured is problematic, not really problematic, more a waste of times. I hope that explains in part why I posted the message in the first place. scope_creepTalk 12:23, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
- I have not yet made up my mind about Power, though I appreciate your thoughts and the ones already shared at the deletion discussion. The article is not how I would write it, but she is lead at a large business enterprise (though I will consider the comments at the discussion about whether that is appropriate). Biographies of women
Hi there, DaffodilOcean, and congratulations on all the informative biographies of women scientists you have created. You are certainly helping us to chip away at the gender gap. In this connection, you might be interested in becoming a member of wp:Women in Red, especially as we are now preparing to create an initiative on climate for the whole of 2022. Perhaps you can assist us by adding the names of deserving scientists to our evolving red list of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Climate or perhaps simply suggesting here some lists or names we could look into. Keep up the good work!--Ipigott (talk) 09:43, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Ipigott: - I am not entirely clear on what it means to be a 'member' of WP:Women in Red, though I do poke into different points of the project's presence here on Wikipedia. Regardless, I can certainly add names to the red list of women in climate. I will think of some options and share them as they come to mind. DaffodilOcean (talk) 03:58, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
- We are always happy to have any editor participate in WiR activities but members actively take part in deciding our priorities, assisting new contributors and generally encouraging efforts to reduce the gender gap. We also develop red lists in a wide variety of areas, write essays on how to improve articles about women and and discuss items of interest on our talk page. If you would like to become a member, you can register at the top of the Women in Red|main WiR page.--Ipigott (talk) 06:52, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

It's not a big deal. You couldn't possibly have known that this was an issue, because it's a new issue that's only been happening in the past couple of weeks for some reason, and never happened before — and it's certainly not your fault, but some kind of system bug that shouldn't actually be happening at all. I'm quite sure that people have adding categories to draft pages in advance of moving the page for years without incident, but these phantom redirects have only started emerging as a problem in the past couple of months. So yeah, when moving pages from draftspace to mainspace, either you can do the page move first and then add the categories second, or you can add the categories to the draft wrapped inside the {{draft categories}} template — once the page is in mainspace that template will actually inactivate, so that the page is filed in the categories even though they're technically still "wrapped". But it's not that you did anything horribly wrong, it's just that the system is being weird lately about something that never used to cause the problem at all. So just consider that "being helpful" rather than "fixing a mistake". Bearcat (talk) 16:11, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
- Does this mean I can leave the {{draft categories}} wrapper in place, and it will magically go away when the article is moved to the mainspace? DaffodilOcean (talk) 02:30, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
- The wrapper doesn't automatically get removed from the page once it's in mainspace, but it doesn't function in mainspace the way it functions in draftspace: in draftspace it wraps the categories in a "The article will be filed in these categories if and when it's moved" box that renders the categories as text links while not filing the page in them, but once in mainspace the page actually files in the categories even though they're still technically wrapped. So you can edit the page again after the move to take the wrapper back out, but it's not urgent because the page will still be properly categorized even if you forget about that. Think alike! The book reviews will I think push Jennifer Elder over the notability threshold. :) Mujinga (talk) 03:15, 12 January 2023 (UTC)
- Mujinga - They certainly help...though I would feel better about them if the reviews come from a broader set of authors. I am done editing the page for now if you have more to add. DaffodilOcean (talk) 03:17, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

Draft: Linda Adler-Kassner
Hello, thanks so much for your edits / updates to this page. I am still struggling with establishing academic notoriety while avoiding this pitfall, "The professional work section still is promotional and not informative." I am fairly good at adapting to writing standards and guidelines, but if someone (anyone) could take a sentence in that section and rework it in a way that isn't promotional...that would be great and I could use it as a template for re-working everything else. How does one share significant academic accomplishments in the field without sounding promotional? This is an honest question, as the best way for me to learn is via an example specific to the norms I am trying to adapt. Any detailed advice would be helpful. Thank you. Dr. B.C. Ernst (talk) 19:59, 1 September 2022 (UTC)
- Bcernst - Adler-Kassner will meet WP:PROF criteria #1 because there are multiple reviews of her work, which is why I added the reviews to the several of the books she has published. Establishing notability is based on what other people say about her, not about what she has said. For example, the first sentence of the section I noted says this:"Adler-Kassner was the past chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, delivering the Chair's Address, titled "Because Writing is Never Just Writing," on March 16, 2017." As someone outside her field, I distill this to Adler-Kassner gave a talk. I don't know why it's important, or what impact it was viewed as having in the community.
- Then, further down there is this: "Following the creation of the Framework, Adler-Kassner promoted its policy recommendations nationally, including in discussions with the U.S. Department of Education under the Obama administration in 2011." This would distill to Adler-Kassner promotes her ideas, but the page would be better if it were made clear what the community views as important from this work.
- One final example, "Along with Isabel Baca and Jim Fredicksen, Adler-Kassner co-wrote the November 2018 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) position statement, "Understanding and Teaching Writing: Guiding Principles," which revised an earlier NCTE position statement." She wrote a statement, but I don't know why it's important.
- I hope this helps, and you can adapt that section of her page to make it clear what her impact is in her field. DaffodilOcean (talk) 01:28, 2 September 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you so very much for this response! You are the first Wiki editor to engage with me (after I asked questions on other talk pages) and your guidance has been instrumental. Again, I greatly appreciate you taking the time. I have continued to update the "professional work" section with additional context from the speech. It is my hope that these added details develop and clarify how Adler-Kassner has contributed to the field by explaining how / why. I am sure additional edits are needed, but I am hoping that this latest attempt shows promise. On the whole, the entry is looking much more clear, concise, and properly referenced compared to earlier attempts. Again, thank you. Bcernst (talk) 19:04, 2 September 2022 (UTC)
- I trimmed down the 'professional work' section of the page, and left the points that seemed most important to me. One additional consideration is whether or not you have a conflict of interest here (see WP:COI). Given that you uploaded a picture of Adler-Kassner that you noted was your own work, it seems likely you know her given the close nature of the photograph. Please read through the information at WP:COI and take any next steps that may be appropriate. DaffodilOcean (talk) 03:03, 5 September 2022 (UTC)

I took a swing at cleaning up the article sourcing issues. I also found that there was significant copyvio, which I cleaned up. I'm waiting to have the copyvio revdel'd before I move it to mainspace, but I'd appreciate if you would take another look and let me know if you agree the sourcing is acceptable now. Thanks. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 13:43, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
- ScottishFinnishRadish - I added an additional source for her 2020 award since the award was discussed beyond her institution. I also put the information about her being named a 2018 fellow into the awards section and the lede since that is the point that is a clear pass for WP:PROF. DaffodilOcean (talk) 15:31, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks a ton. I'll mainspace it as soon as the copyvio is revdelled and I get the ok on my rewrites. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 15:40, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
- Also, ScottishFinnishRadish - nice catch on the copyvio, I didn't even think to check. DaffodilOcean (talk) 17:27, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
- I only noticed because I found the page it was ripped off from while searching for sources. After paraphrasing, I ended up using it as a source. Lucky catch, really, since they didn't cite it. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 17:30, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Robert McClenon (talk) 01:55, 1 July 2022 (UTC)- Robert McClenon - thanks for accepting the article on Elizabeth Cochran. Your comment about the hatnote was clear, but did you have to delete the page with the redirect to Nellie Bly? DaffodilOcean (talk) 01:58, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- I don't understand the question. The redirect to Nellie Bly was in the article slot for Elizabeth Cochran. I couldn't accept the draft without deleting or moving the redirect. The hatnote takes the place of the redirect. Is there something else that I don't understand about the questionh? Robert McClenon (talk) 02:07, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- Robert McClenon - perhaps I am being dense, but I truly am just interested in learning how this is done. Let me see if I can re-phrase this. When I look at the history of the current article for Elizabeth Cochran [5], I see the history starts with the page I started and there is no indication of the old page which would have only had this text on it: "#REDIRECT Nellie Bly". Did you have to request the page with the redirect text get deleted first? In other words, how come the history of the page that is now found at Elizabeth Cochran doesn't start at the redirect? DaffodilOcean (talk) 08:31, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
- Yes. I had to tag the redirect from Elizabeth Cochran to Nellie Bly for deletion. After the redirect was deleted, known as G6, the draft could be accepted. If you have more questions about the review process and redirects and deletions, maybe you can ask them at the Teahouse. Yes. The redirect had to be deleted. Yes, it would have been theoretically possible to build the draft on top of the redirect, but that would have been even more complicated, so this is the way it is done. Rusalkii (talk) 18:06, 10 April 2022 (UTC)- Hey! Thanks for the great work, as usual. Minor issue here: the previously deleted Karen Morse seems to have been entirely unrelated to this Karen Morse, so all the incoming links except those to Karen W. Morse expect a British water skier and get an American organic chemist! My first instinct was to just link the water skier as Karen Morse (water skier), but it isn't actually clear to me that the chemist is the primary topic, and there isn't a page that a hatnote could link to either. Thoughts? Rusalkii (talk) 18:12, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
- Rusalkii A quick search shows that the water skier is also notable. I just drafted up a page for Karen Morse (water skier) and submitted it to AfC. I know the notability for sports is different from academics, so if you feel it needs more sourcing, let me know. There is quite a bit on the water skier.
- I think it's OK to have Karen Morse and then the chemist page at Karen W. Morse (and then put hatnotes on both of them). Does that work for you? DaffodilOcean (talk) 20:17, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
- Looks good to me! Rusalkii (talk) 22:27, 11 April 2022 (UTC)

Now moved to mainspace
After looking carefully through this article and making one or two minor changes, I've moved it to mainspace. In my opinion, the article is well referenced with sources which clearly demonstrate notability. Well done!--Ipigott (talk) 12:09, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help @Ipigott:. I have been making my way through older pages declined from AfC. There are some notable people in there, with pages that need help in formatting and citations. DaffodilOcean (talk) 14:09, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
- For some unexplained reason, once an article has been refused at AfC or deleted under AfD, reviewers tend to refuse the next attempt. In this case you had made a good start on the article and it seemed to me your sourcing was more than adequate. As I have strong connections with Denmark and am fluent in Danish and German, I took a particular interest in the article. Please let me know if you run into further problems with AfC. As I've suggested before, if you joined Women in Red and tagged your women's biographies with a WIR banner, they would be noticed by other participants in the project. And with your experience, you would no doubt be able to help other contributors. But membership is of course entirely up to you. COI?
You !voted at an AfD and your user page remains nebulous about your CoI. Can you provide assurance that your edit is above board? Chris Troutman (talk) 20:16, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Chris troutman - I have no COI with the University of Michigan, Sharon Matusik, or any of her previous institutions. I keep an eye on women academics nominated for deletion, and add details to pages that I feel meet WP:PROF. My COI is nebulous as I do not want to reveal my identity, but acknowledges that I am aware of Wikipedia's COI policy. DaffodilOcean (talk) 00:34, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you; good enough. Chris Troutman (talk) 00:39, 27 August 2022 (UTC)
- Can you be a bit more precise about what you promise to do with respect to your COI? Just being aware is a bit weak. Will you disclose your interest if you get involved in a page that your have a COI with regards to? Or will you entirely abstain from editing such pages? Would be good to have some general statements that are not just "being aware". I understand you may not want to reveal your institution, but something else should be possible. - Apologies for my late reply. I think I was just confused why you didn't simply say that if you will edit an article for which you have a COI you will disclose that COI, which of course is what you will do if you follow COI guidelines. But it's just nice to be clear about this. AncientWalrus (talk) 11:22, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
