Wells Cathedral and St Edmund

Hi, I don't know if Saint Edmund falls within your specialist area but I wondered if you could help. I've just requested a peer review of Wells Cathedral in the hope of pushing it towards a FA nomination, but I'm aware of one problem. Within the description of the North Porch is a link to the dab page for Saint Edmund. I presume it should go to Edmund the Martyr but none of my sources make it clear. Any help on this or any other issues related to the cathedral article welcome.— Rod talk 17:11, 10 November 2013 (UTC)

That's got to be the correct saint - there are no other St Edmunds until Edmund Rich or later.Ealdgyth - Talk 17:45, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks - its been changed by another editor who agrees with you. If you had any other comments on the article that would be great.— Rod talk 17:29, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I have been putting a few weeks work into developing the Wade's Causeway article and have developed it from stub to GA class so far. I aim to get it to FA soon, but at the moment it needs a good peer review. I am having trouble finding people with sufficient time, knowledge and interest in the topic to commit to performing a peer review so far. Your user page, as well as your edit history and article involvement, suggests that you might be able to help out here. If this is of any interest, please drop me a note, or dive straight in at Wikipedia:Peer_review/Wade's_Causeway/archive1. Many thanks - PocklingtonDan (talk) 10:14, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Update on RS question

Ealdgyth, what's the consensus this week on About.com as a RS? I just tossed a blatent copy and paste, but what of the source itself? Montanabw(talk) 19:54, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

(tps) It's usually treated as a self-published source, so reliability depends on the author's credentials; they hire freelance writers of a variety of backgrounds. Nikkimaria (talk) 20:03, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
So, basically not an RS unless there are particularly unique circumstances? (Is it really that easy to publish there? Hmmm and do they pay? Hmmm....) Montanabw(talk) 04:36, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
Pretty much. (The likelihood of you being published depends on not only your abilities but also the policies of the specific subsite you want, and they're not real open about their selection criteria, particularly not after they fired most of their editorial staff a year or two ago. There are piles of similar freelancing sites out there). Nikkimaria (talk) 05:17, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
I recall looking at one of those sites a few years back and thinking, "yeah right, they'll pay me... when hell freezes over." There's one out there now called "ponybox" that really pays only in "company scrip" - you can redeem coupons for worthless junk... yawn. If I want to work for free, I'll stick to editing wikipedia. Montanabw(talk) 06:48, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
I did some work for one of those sites a couple of years back, and did get paid in actual money...and on the RS question, not even I would consider me an expert on some of the stuff I was writing about! (One odd prompt I recall was "Do Canadians know X?" and my article said, in essence, "I'm Canadian and I do, does that count?") Nikkimaria (talk) 07:03, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
So far I have found RL article writing to be easier than WP. But then, sometimes you go back and look at your work and also see a lot of errors you wish another editor had caught! LOL! Montanabw(talk) 21:27, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
That's been my experience too, but with a RL article you don't get all these little bugs bothering you all the time. I even once got a fee for international syndication rights, something I can't ever see happening here. Eric Corbett 21:42, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

Guide

Hey, just thought I'd address something I saw in your guide. You wrote you're concerned I'm a "bad word" civility person, whereas I wouldn't consider this the case. I think everyone has the right to a few choice swears, and honestly it doesn't bother me. I definitely use my fair share in IRC and real life, though I tend to refrain on wiki since I don't want to unintentionally offend anyone. When it comes to civility I'm much, much more concerned about personal attacks and rather likely to ignore swearing and the like. Ks0stm (TCGE) 20:35, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Henry I

Hi, on this reversion, perhaps if the image caption was "In 1125 Henry I briefly settled at the King’s House in Sheen and became the first known royal resident of what in the following centuries evolved into the Richmond Palace" as per Richmond Palace#Norman? In other words does it bring value to the article if Henry was the first to settle there and is the origin of/influenced the location for a future royal landmark? Gts-tg (talk) 18:16, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

Not really. It's trivia - important to the article on the palace - but trivia in terms of his life. Ealdgyth - Talk 18:18, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
:Quick comment from a page lurker! Yes, it might tell us something about Richmond Palace (although I've got to say that the picture isn't very clear on my screen - I can't make out any of the writing, so it just looks like a blurry white plaque) - but not much about the King, who, as you suggest, was there only briefly, well before the site became important. Hchc2009 (talk) 18:22, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
I can tell you what the plaque says if it helps...? No answer required if not. Nortonius (talk) 18:55, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
No prob's - the Commons page has the text. Hchc2009 (talk) 19:03, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
Typical! I didn't even think to look, as it's not normally so helpful! Nortonius (talk) 19:23, 19 November 2013 (UTC)
Would it at least help if the text from commons was part of the caption or the caption itself? Gts-tg (talk) 01:46, 20 November 2013 (UTC)
No, it wouldn't. We don't list other spots he stopped at and rested a while - that's the level of detail that goes into BIG book length biographies. We aren't that. Ealdgyth - Talk 01:49, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Article Request

Hi. Dont think I am stalking you, but I saw this comment and was wondering if you could send me that article or summarize it for me? Thanks. I found an interesting forum posting from Grey and was wondering if the article you cited shared the same sentiment. Thanks. WeldNeck (talk) 03:59, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Email me so I can send it? Ealdgyth - Talk 13:50, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
Ha, don't think I'm stalking you, WeldNeck! I have the article as well, and some more. I'll place a note on the article talk page. Ealdgyth, thanks once again for that useful link. Drmies (talk) 15:59, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Merge?

I don't think it's exactly your normal timeframe, but should Cuthwulf of Wessex and Cutha Cathwulf be merged? They both say they are the father of Ceolwald of Wessex, and the family tree is generally the same, but the date of birth is off... Dana boomer (talk) 18:31, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

I think it safe to say both articles are entirely too sure of their statements for what is an entirely murky period of history. Kirby The Earliest English Kings is quite clear that we don't have the least idea who or what Cutha/Cuthwulf/etc may be, much less who he was related to, when he was born, and whether he even existed. He may have been one person, two different people, or perhaps even three different people. THat's from pages 43-44 of that work. Yorke in Kings and Kingdoms of Early Anglo-Saxon England is equally at sea amongst the guesswork - so my personal opinion is that someone with a LOT more knowledge of the period (and interest) is needed to deal with it. Plop it on Mike Christie's lap? Ealdgyth - Talk 20:01, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Horsey question

Do you or any of your horsey TPWs see anything salvageable in Equine massage? I don't doubt that it's a legitimate topic, but as it stands the text reads like a weird mix of spam and ponycruft, while the lead image looks to me like Charles Pooter rehearsing for a Tijuana donkey show and adds no conceivable understanding to the topic. – iridescent 19:18, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

I'll leave that pile of horse-by-products for Dana or Montanabw... it's so far beyond salvagable in my mind that I really want nothing to do with it. I'd be more likely to dig into the Cutha/Cuthwulf mess above than this. (And, no, Dana, I'm not dealing with the Cutha/Cuthwulf problem ...) Ealdgyth - Talk 20:02, 22 November 2013 (UTC)
I've taken a stab at rewriting it. The majority of the text was unsalvageable, so I deleted it and started over. It's nothing fantastic, but I'd like to think it's better than what was in there previously. I don't have any better replacement for the lead image, though, so if someone wants to suggest one... (Also, pinged Mike Christie on the issue above.) Dana boomer (talk) 15:30, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
Ah, the legacy of User:Una Smith. Dana has my blessing to work on the article. I would note for Iridescent that equine massage is, in fact, a legitimate field or alternative equine medicine (there is also equine acupuncture, equine chiropractic, etc... just as human massage, human acupucture, human chiropractic, etc...) and equine massage has, in fact, benefitted a couple of my own horses immensely. Dana's edits were well done and the article is vastly improved. I will note there are many books on the topic. Montanabw(talk) 19:51, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for that! Wasn't doubting that it was a legit topic, just whether this was one of those cases where the best thing to do is delete the article and rebuild from zero. Normally I'd do it myself, but (despite growing up about five minutes walk from the alleged oldest racetrack in the US) what I know about horse anatomy could be written on a stamp. – iridescent 23:29, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

My block log

Re: your question at User:Ealdgyth/2013_Arb_Election_votes about that 2 year self block. I didn't think this important enough to mention in any of my answers or my statement, and I'm not sure where or how I'd address it there. The gist of it is I screwed up, in a minor way but one that is embarrassingly and permanently preserved. I was trying to range block a persistent vandal/troll/stalker. I went to the block user page from my own user page, so my username ended up in the form by default. I either pasted the IP range from the rangeblock calculator tool into the wrong box on the form or forgot to paste it altogether and accidentally blocked myself. Facepalm Facepalm In retrospect, I should have added a more informative log comment with the unblock, but I was just trying to laugh it off instead of dying of embarrassment and shame. Gamaliel (talk) 04:38, 24 November 2013 (UTC)

Oh, i figured it was a mistake (most folks don't block themselves without it being a mistake) but I don't think I can just ignore the fact that it exists either, because then someone would point out my "error" to me. Gotta love folks who love to score "points" in that way. I'm hoping to complete my decisions today... my elderly mother fell earlier in the week and was in the hospital, so I've been busy with that since Wednesday. She came home last night - no serious damage done, thankfully. Ealdgyth - Talk 15:22, 24 November 2013 (UTC)
Oh, I understand. I have no expectations about what you do with the information, I'm just putting the facts out there. In that same spirit, I've updated my question on vested contributors in response to your concerns. I hope your mother continues to be well and don't give Wikipedia a second thought when you have real life to deal with. Gamaliel (talk) 00:35, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive

Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days!

In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00.

At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or leave a message on the Backlog Drive talk page. And remember, there are less than 4 days before the drive starts!--EdwardsBot (talk) 03:16, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

User:Jennifer Cassie & edits to Pope John VIII

I noticed the recent edits of this user at the Pope John VIII article. At least one appears to be copy & pasted from here[1]. I do not have access to the book, Medieval Papacy by Geoffrey Barraclough, but I feel it would be wise to check that as well. --Kansas Bear (talk) 19:33, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

I was just doing some cleanup on the article - and the mess defeated me before I could handle much of it. It's a mess - if you think it's a copyvio, probably best to remove the edits. I don't have access to Barraclough's book either. Ealdgyth - Talk 19:35, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Main Page appearance: Easy Jet

This is a note to let the main editors of Easy Jet know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 20, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 20, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Easy Jet (1967–92) was an American Quarter Horse foaled, or born, in 1967, and was one of only two horses to have been a member of the American Quarter Horse Association (or AQHA) Hall of Fame as well as being an offspring of members. Easy Jet won the 1969 All American Futurity, the highest race for Quarter Horse racehorses, and was named World Champion Quarter Race Horse in the same year. He earned the highest speed rating awarded at the time—AAAT. After winning 27 of his 38 races in two years of racing, he retired from the race track and became a breeding stallion. As a sire, or father, he was the first All American Futurity winner to sire an All American Futurity winner, and went on to sire three winners of that race, and nine Champion Quarter Running Horses. Ultimately, his ownership and breeding rights were split into 60 shares worth $500,000 each—a total of $30 million. By 1993, the year after his death, his foals had earned more than $25 million on the racetrack. Easy Jet was of sorrel color, a light yellowish-red. Guy Fawkes

If your assertion is the Fawkes indeed reached the noose and was attached to it when he jumped off the scaffolding, the article is poorly written, in particular, this sentence: Weakened by torture and aided by the hangman, Fawkes began to climb the ladder to the noose, but either through jumping to his death or climbing too high so the rope was incorrectly set, he managed to avoid the agony of the latter part of his execution by breaking his neck. It should read: Weakened by torture and aided by the hangman, Fawkes climbed the ladder of the scaffolding, was affixed to the noose, but either through jumping to his death or climbing too high so the rope was incorrectly set, he managed to avoid the agony of the latter part of his execution by breaking his neck. Don't you agree? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nxxus (talkcontribs) 16:01, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
