Reporting vandals

Hi HackedBotato! I'm guessing you are a little confused about how reporting vandals works, hence the misplaced abuse report in the article namespace. Here's the lowdown: if you want to report a vandal, you have to list them at the administrator intervention against vandalism noticeboard. Twinkle is a very useful automated tool that can help you do this; you can turn Twinkle on in your preferences. Also, we don't use the abuse response system anymore, hence the tag on it that says it has been marked historical. Even back in the day, Abuse Response was only used for very, very severe and prolonged cases of vandalism. Meanwhile, I have nominated your report at 216.100.91.10 for speedy deletion. You did the right thing by reverting the vandal's edits, but you just happened to file the report in the wrong place. I'd say in this case it would be a good idea to see if the IP continues vandalizing and then give them a few more warnings before reporting them. Happy editing! Altamel (talk) 01:20, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thanks for telling me! I will not do anything like test... again!

I'm dazed and confused...

Hi, I was wondering why you reverted the edit I made to the xkcd article. Was my contribution incorrect? Please forgive any bone headed mistakes I may make, as I am a fairly new user. Also, did I ask this in the right place? Thanks! Cap'n Tightpants (talk) 02:04, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Thanks!

Okay, it looks like you reverted the revert correctly. Thanks for fixing it! Cap'n Tightpants (talk) 17:34, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Your recent contributions

Hi HackedBotato. Thank you for your good contributions. There are a couple of things that may be an issue, and I thought I'd drop by with a bit of guidance.

When you see a brand new stub, ask yourself if it is an advertisement for something. You moved Lilypad lacquer to Lilypad Lacquer when it was clearly an advert. If there is a website where someone can buy something, or the content at the userpage is promotional (even self-promotional), please consider tagging it for speedy deletion instead.

You moved Kyle marta to Kyle Marta, but googling shows the subject as almost certainly not notable. (I could be wrong about this because I am forced to use Bing in the country where I live.)

User:Sydnarose made an attack userpage. You tagged it as G7 (then removed the tag) and never dropped him a note. Better would have been WP:G10 and a caution at his user talk telling him not to make attack pages. (Consider also watchlisting such pages and even going back to check his contribs after a while.)

If you have an questions, please ask. Very best wishes, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:01, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback! Will keep in mind and use the useful advice you have provided for me. Thanks again! ~HackedBotato Chat with meContribs 01:46, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

Rollback granted

Hi HackedBotato. After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! MusikAnimal talk 21:20, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

I wanted to know why on earth you changed the word 'paediatric' back to 'pediatric' on the Durdan's Hospital page. I don't care that you think this is the right way to spell it as it is the American way, I did not change it to match my British beliefs, but rather to match the Sri Lankan spelling, the country where said hospital stands. If you do not believe me, go to the Durdan's Hospital website and look at the paediatric department page, I think that should make things clear — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.29.92.254 (talk) 21:21, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

My message on the Softonic page was not in any way 'not constructive', I downloaded a program from Softonic and it screwed my computer with attached viruses and malware.

Now THAT'S 'not constructive'! And people should be able to know this, that behind all the 'trust our product' rubbish Softonic spreads malware. And your attitude in deleting my comment shows the company is happy to do this and deceive customers. WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

One of several of Godot13's quality submissions during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Game Notability Discussion

Hello. From your experience, review and edit history of video game articles I would like to get your objective, neutral and unbiased opinion about this article which is nominated to be deleted Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/MonsterMMORPG_(2nd_nomination). Feel free to check references it has: Talk:MonsterMMORPG (a little bit scroll down). Article were also created as a draft, then accepted by an editor. I believe that Wikipedia is an ocean of knowledge so we should add as many as possible information, of course based on solid references, and I believe that is what you do. WikiCup 2015 May newsletter

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by India The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Belarus Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! Figureskatingfan (talk · contribs · email), Miyagawa (talk · contribs · email) and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) 16:33, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks, HackedBotato for seeing a problem with the new Sabaapathy article. It does appear that a user improperly copy-pasted text from within Wikipedia onto their own user page and then moved their user page to create a new article. All of it was in violation of our copyright policy as is explained at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. You'll see that the problem could not be fixed by simply moving the article back to the original page name-- that would have left an incorrect page history and failed to properly credit the original page authors. So I reverted the moves and restored the original copy of the article at Sabapathy -- and I believe the problem has now been repaired. I appreciate your mentioning that something was strange on the talk page. Cheers. CactusWriter (talk) 15:57, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

@CactusWriter: I spoke to the user before (You can find it on this page), he blanked a page I reverted and said he was "Moving from his user page", yet I have no idea what he wanted to do. He has a lot of "alts", as you can see in his user history. ~HB ChatContribs 17:02, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Dank memes, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from an implausible typo, or other unlikely search term.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you believe that there is a reason to keep the redirect, you can request that administrators wait a while before deleting it. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the page and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Greetings! Thanks for downloading and trying out the STiki tool. Unfortunately, your first use came at a time when STiki was experiencing some technical difficulties, so your test-drive probably wasn't as positive as the STiki community would have liked. Because of edit ingestion problems you probably experienced an usually low "hit rate" (the percentage of edits a user sees that they revert). Typically these numbers hover in the 20-33% range, so I encourage you to come back and give us another try. Thanks, West.andrew.g (talk) 16:58, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Your request for adminship

To all Wikipedians who would like to comment on my adminship submission: User:GottaGoFast/Editor review ~GottaGoFast Stepitup 19:58, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

Discuss

I'm not saying this isn't worth trying for at some point, but you've been on Wikipedia for less than a year and have less than 3,000 edits. If I were you, I would wait a bit longer per WP:NOTNOW. No matter how qualified you may be, you don't have any significant chance of succeeding in my honest opinion. I expect to see oppose votes in the request just based on you edit count and/or the amount of time you have been here for. I'm not saying this isn't an option to look at at some point in the future, but I don't think now is the right time. I just thought I'd try to help you out, so don't take this in a bad way, okay? Dustin (talk) 19:36, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

I probably won't get admin rights, and I know that I have very little chance of succeeding right now. I'll probably get overwhelming oppose votes, but I just want to see what other users think I need more experience on. Thank you for giving me your advice and honest opinion! ~GottaGoFast Stepitup 19:43, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
It's not a problem! There used to be an editor review process but that process is no longer available... This might not work, but maybe if you created a subpage such as User:GottaGoFast/Editor review or something along those lines and highlighted it on your userpage, you could get some comments by other editors passing by. I can't guarantee that that would be particularly effective, but that's the best I can come up with (and it's just a suggestion!). Dustin (talk) 19:52, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
Hi, GottaGoFast, you've certainly been a very useful editor to the encyclopedia ever since I first welcomed you a year ago. But I have to agree with Dustin above, most RfA voters want to see a little more experience. You do a lot of vandalism reversion, which is good. But many RfA voters also want to see some strong content contributions, like writing a large portion of an article. Don't let this discourage you in any way; feedback is good, but you can always ask me or the other well-meaning editors around here if you want a check-up on how you are doing. I'm just glad to see that you're still around. I've welcomed hundreds of new users, most of whom make one or two edits and never come back. You are one of the only ones who haven't lost interest and have kept helping the encyclopedia. Altamel (talk) 19:48, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
Altamel, your welcome was that little "push" that got me into Wikipedia. If you never did that, I wouldn't be even close to where I am today. I wanted to thank you for that, but never had the chance to, as I didn't even know what a userpage was back then. Thank you. ~GottaGoFast Stepitup 19:55, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. That means a lot to me, especially seeing that welcome in your "museum." Altamel (talk) 01:10, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

I am sorry it did not go well. If you feel like trying this again in the future when you have a better chance contact me. I will help you with some pre-vetting and even a nom if I think you are ready. Chillum 20:04, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

  • Hi. Since there seems to be no realistic chance of success, I have closed your RfA per WP:SNOW. Generally, when running for adminship, you should have at least one year of experience (a few months more is preferable, though), and a few thousand well-balanced edits. A decent amount of participants at RfA usually expect at least a bit of content work, participation in Wikipedia maintenance (stating your opinion on proposals, working in one or two admin areas, etc.) Don't be discouraged though; remember that failing an RfA doesn't mean that you aren't a valued editor. Regards, --Biblioworm 20:16, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for closing the RfA and the advice! I will keep them in mind. ~GottaGoFast Stepitup 20:18, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
  • Point being that if you can't read instructions when you see them, you won't be able to read and understand all the policies you need to know as an admin. Start at WP:Advice for RfA candidates and the links and footnotes on that page. All of them. Hi there, although I agree that Osan Kumar Singh is likely a candidate for speedy deletion, I did want to draw to your attention that tagging an article 60 seconds after creation is a bit bitey and doesn't really assume good faith. This, of course, doesn't apply to things like adverts or attack pages, but generally giving a new user 10+ minutes is a good rule of thumb. --Non-Dropframe talk 20:39, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for this advice, I will give newly created articles time before tagging them as speedy. ~GottaGoFast Stepitup 20:39, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

G U H O O Y A M F

Hello Lance, with all respect I have done my reaserch with the necesary citations and all, and even the film itself is recognized by many people as a satirical black comedy drama film, even wikipedia says it here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Beauty_(1999_film)#External_links, so there you go I´ve got enough evidence that American Beauty IS actually a black comedy satirical drama, and I would really appreciate if you stopped taking out my sources and my editting because I have to do my research all over again. Ok, thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by CHCHque verchis (talkcontribs) 19:16, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi, CHCHque verchis. I believe you are mistaken, as I have not taken out any sources or citations and another editor has reverted your edits and has added an edit summary explaining that, although many sources say that it is indeed black comedy and satire, the consensus is to exclude the genres from the lead section. ~Liancetalk/contribs 19:21, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Scotland Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Philadelphia Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
  2. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
  4. Somerset Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
  5. Washington, D.C. West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
  6. Somerset Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
  7. United States Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
  8. England Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

WikiCup 2015: The results

WikiCup 2015 is now in the books! Congrats to our finalists and winners, and to everyone who took part in this year's competition.

This year's results were an exact replica of last year's competition. For the second year in a row, the 2015 WikiCup champion is Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points). All of his points were earned for an impressive 253 featured pictures and their associated bonus points (5060 and 1695, respectively). His entries constituted scans of currency from all over the world and scans of medallions awarded to participants of the U.S. Space program. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) came in second place; she earned by far the most bonus points (4082), for 4 featured articles, 15 good articles, and 147 DYKs, mostly about in her field of expertise, natural science. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), a finalist every year since 2010, came in third, with 2379 points.

Our newcomer award, presented to the best-performing new competitor in the WikiCup, goes to United States Rationalobserver (submissions). Everyone should be very proud of the work they accomplished. We will announce our other award winners soon.

A full list of our award winners are:

We warmly invite all of you to sign up for next year's competition. Discussions and polls concerning potential rules changes are also open, and all are welcome to participate. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2016 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Beginner help

Hi Liance, and thank you for your quick review today. I've tried to fix the references, but this is my first translation of a wikipedia article, and I'm not quite sure i understand what "lead sentence missing" really means. I could't find a lead sentence in the original article, and I've tried to look at other similar wiki pages, but without much insight gained. Could you give me an example of what I need to do? Hello Liance,

Thank you for reviewing my article. I wanted to include Rentberry to Wikipedia because it is actually the first platform which offers transparent bidding on rentals. Message misplaced on userpage

Dear wiki/editor/Lance, How are you, today? I've read your comments & on my article live biography. I really accepted your comments constructively, as per wikipedia.org/article compliance standard which you indicated did not meet the wiki standard at this time. However, you indicated areas where my anomalies will be fixed. Paradoxically, i've focused on the references & external links which are my major areas of deficiencies. I,ve with meticulous, carefully revamped, modified these areas of your comments with renaming my user: names & articles still bears the avalanche of the original contents with expansion & new opened categories/subcategories. Please, i'm requesting another "review" of the similarly article with residual changes focused mostly on the titled which elicits the primarily "article live biography" "references & external links" I therefore placed this request for your another "review". I will like you or any other wiki editor, who may have the chance, since you gentlemen & ladies are very busy editing other articles; in this light therefore, I implore you, please, review this article requested from wiki accepted edit/contributor. Thank you. (message originally by User:Dr. Anthony Jones Okafor Offu.)

Help in improving the Her Story Draft

Hello,

I was wondering if you could help me to correctly edit the Her Story page I am trying to put up. I am new to wikipedia and have already tried to remove references from the article that were considered unreliable by Wikipedia. However, my attempts so far have not been successful!

This is the draft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Her_Story_(documentary)

I'm sure any tips you could give me would be helpful.

Thanks very much!

Best,

Declined article "Max Headrooming" curious as to exactly why you declined it

Hello Liance I'm Robert Haazen (Username Ezee Posse) I am curious as to why you rejected my article "Max Headrooming", I am new to all this so please forgive my ignorance if any. You say that articles need verified and such like. But what about articles that make debut show on here, there won't be any way of verifying anything because the article is the first of its kind. Now as much as most of us know that the TV character Max Headroom did exist at one point. The item explains about a video lag and/or glitch that I personally nic named "The Max Headroom effect" and wanted some form of way to make it official that it was myself who coined the idea and no one else. I have seen many times where people take credit for things that they are not responsible for creating which leaves out the actual creator of what ever item, term or saying that they created. I wanted to put my name on the term/saying "Max Headrooming" so if it did catch on and in years or decades that someone wished to research it and find out where the saying came from that it would lead back to me as the creator first ever posted in Wikipedia. How am I supposed to be able to do this when there is nothing to reference it as this will be the first ever reference to the subject that could then be used to verify other people who may write about it if my saying caught on. How do other people with similar ideas manage to post their creations here as a first foot into making something theirs. Could you advise me on how to do this and what changes I would need to do to my original article to have it allowed publicly on Wikipedia for all to see and read about it. I wish no one no harm or anything, I just want my name on something that I come up with first instead of some other person doing so without me and to find they take all the credit for something I did. I don't mean to seem like a pain in the ass with all this. I just want to somehow make my little mark on the world and have proof it was me who did it. I know you probably have a back log of items to get through so I will wait for as long as it takes for you to get to me in regards to this.

Thank you for your attention.
