State park ads and new domains

I described the situation in this talk page, regarding fixes to external links for Pacific Beach State Park, but I'm posting here for greater visibility in the hopes it reaches someone with more time/access to more automation than myself.

As the talk page link says, state park info website URLs are all now likely broken. No redirects were put in place, but the only change should be the domain: "www.parks.wa.gov" to "parks.state.wa.us".

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

  • Strong oppose. There is no other project named just Washington, so disambiguation is unnecessary. This would also trigger yet another debate on the naming of Washington-related article, which reveals systematic biases on Wikipedia and often result in unfavorable compromises. In regards to Wikipedia:WikiProject George Washington University, there are tons of WikiProjects for universities that share names with states (e.g. Wikipedia:WikiProject University of Florida and Wikipedia:WikiProject Florida), and none of them have disambiguation pages. First Ever Wiki Edit-a-Thon at Washington State Historical Society for Women's History Month

Hello Wikimedians! I was urged to create a post about this event by the Cascadia Wikimedians FB group. We at the Washington State Historical Society are currently developing statewide commemorative activities and events in honor of the upcoming national suffrage centennial in 2020. Our first event will be a Wiki Edit-a-Thon focused on improving pages related to Washington State suffrage and suffragist history and will be held here at the History Museum in Tacoma on Saturday, March 9th 2019.

The event will be hosted by myself and two Washington State suffrage historians and we are looking for at least two seasoned Wikimedians to help guide the event in case folks have questions about how Wikipedia editing works. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. Recent additions to city articles

I've noticed that in the past week, several newly-registered accounts have been adding information about indigenous tribes to articles on various cities (e.g. Puyallup and Bothell) that has been poorly sourced and not entirely fitting. Ridgefield Cemetery

SounderBruce has PROD'd Ridgefield Cemetery, which is fine, but the city's website suggests a 150-year history. I'm struggling to find detailed coverage via Google, but perhaps there's coverage in some archives or behind paywalls? I've learned of 3 alternative names for the cemetery, so this may be part of the challenge. Not the end of the world if the page is deleted, but I figured I'd see if any project members are interested in helping with a research project. Need help with a page

On the page Airports in WA State I'm trying to edit it as Everett Field (currently CS non-primary) would now be categorized as Primary as in FEB 2019- FEB 2020 had over 1 mil passengers served. I have no knowledge on how to do the table or where to get more up to date data as the current data is from 2016. The airport got commercial service in 2019. Some tech company gets super high traffic

Normally I do not care about companies but this Seattle-based software company seems to be getting crazy amounts of high traffic every weekday. I am not so sure about traffic for companies but I think this is unusual.

Wikiproject banner

Is there a reason that the WP:Washington banner is still being replaced with the WP:US/WA banner? I recall there was a point maybe 5 years ago when WP:US was subsuming many of the state specific WPs, and did for a time take WP:WA, but as this is still at least a semi-active project, with at leas one semi-active task force (Eastern Wshington), shouldnt we utilize the older WA specific talkpage banner?--Kevmin § 15:27, 4 May 2021 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

You may have heard that the WMF recently hired a new Chief of Product and Technology Officer, Selena Deckelmann, who is based in Portland, OR. We would like to organize a meet-and-greet event in Portland either on August 3 or August 4 2022 for area Wikimedians (inclusive of WMF staff) to get to know Selena a bit, and vice versa. Details are still TBD - and will be somewhat dependent on how many people we expect to attend. Gonna start List of marine organisms Washington state

Lists of all other freshwater and land organisms exist, seems weird in such a maraine state that this list doesn't already exist, Ill condense the marine mammals of olympic national park and fishes of the Salish sea as well as add coast species and invertebrates and create an invertebrates of the Salish sea. Boundary changes between Clallam and Jefferson Counties?

There appears to have been a boundary adjustment between Clallam and Jefferson Counties sometime after 2007. Can anyone provide a source that might give information about this? (I am trying to understand a series of edits related to Dodger Point Fire Lookout, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. When it was listed in 2007, it was documented as being in Clallam County, but current maps show it to be in Jefferson County, in a portion that may have been transferred between the two. There have been conflicting edits on NRHP lists for the two counties as a result.)

@Magicpiano: The 1990 USGS topographic map I retrieved from TopoView shows the lookout as being in Jefferson County, so perhaps it was just an error in the original listing. SounderBruce 19:53, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the pointer, the historical maps available there made for, err, interesting perusal. The National Register nomination includes a copy of the 1990 Mount Queets quadrangle, in which Dodger Point appears at the far northern edge, clearly marked in Jefferson County, but with the line also labeled "indefinite boundary". The only specific references to Clallam County are in the fields where jurisdictional info is given, it's never mentioned in the narrative text. It does appear as if the decision to list it in Clallam County was based on older maps, where the county line runs directly east-west south of the peak, instead of jogging north just to its east. Lushootseed names

ʔi čəxʷ I have been discussing this with @SounderBruce on my Talk page and I was recommended to bring this here. How should I go about adding Lushootseed names to places? I was told that the names don't apply since they were the names of previous settlements, and not the names of the current/modern location. But this is not true, since these names are used and have always been used for places regardless if the settlements are modern or original. Sometimes it is the case, for example, sq̓ʷuʔalqʷu was the name of the stuləgʷabš (Stillaguamish) village in stiqiyuʔ (Arlington), but it is called stiqiyuʔ nowadays, since that is the term that has always referred to the area of Arlington, and since the village was destroyed, the usage of the name has shifted. Any additions need to have reliable sources and, in the case of featured articles like Arlington, they need to be from "high-quality sources". In this case, we'd need sources on the continued use of stiqiyuʔ to refer to Arlington in the present-day from an established and reputable outlet. It's best to include the terms in the History sections of various articles and allow other editors to judge whether they belong in the lead sentence and infobox, where brevity takes priority over nuance (and thus a reader will assume that the term is the one currently in widespread use, which would be misleading). What would be an appropriate source for continued use? For bəc̓adᶻali, the word for Coupeville, the dictionary source was denied on the basis that the village doesn't exist anymore. There are other sources that list bəc̓adᶻali as the word for Coupeville, such as this map[1] from the Tulalip Tribes' Language dept, where I am training to teach. There is an ongoing discussion at Template talk:Infobox settlement where the sentiment seems to be against including modern indigenous names in U.S. city infoboxes. In any case, the name would need to be in widespread use today to be used in the infobox, and that isn't the case for translations, so I will be removing the ones I've added. Article moves to include parenthetical disambiguation

A couple dozen articles with "Washington" in their name have been moved to have "Washington (state)" instead (such as List of high schools in Washington -> List of high schools in Washington (state), even if there's not another article with the same name it needs to be disambiguated from. Should all articles related to Washington include the (state) parenthetical? Please see Wikipedia_talk:Article_titles#Parenthetical_disambiguation_for_all_topic_articles for discussion. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
