Kankurgachi is a neighborhood in North-Central Kolkata, India. With a cosmopolitan crowd and several commercial buildings and restaurants, Kankurgachi is considered as one of the upmarket and elite places in Kolkata.[1] Kankurgachi has become a very important part of Kolkata due its excellent connectivity and infrastructure. Airport, railway stations, Bidhannagar( which houses the technological park of Kolkata, sector V) and New Town,Kolkata are extremely close to Kankurgachi.

History

Kankurgachi was developed by the Kolkata Improvement Trust (formerly Calcutta Improvement Trust.)[citation needed] Kankurgachi township began in the 70s along with Salt Lake. Earlier it was planned to provide residential houses only to doctors and lawyers, but eventually this placed developed into a cosmopolitan neighborhood.

Transportation

The area is well connected with other parts of the city by extremely convenient bus and auto routes. Buses from almost every location in and around Kolkata are available from here. Auto-rickshaw services are extremely frequent in this area, and are available from Kankurgachi to Phulbagan, Salt Lake Bidhan Nagar, EM Bypass, Sealdah, R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital and Ganesh Talkies regularly. Ultadanga, one of the city’s important junctions and the location for one of Kolkata’s busiest railway stations Bidhan Nagar Road, is less than a kilometer away from Kankurgachi. The place is a major junction to reach few other important destinations, namely the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport Kolkata Airport and Rajarhat New Township. Kankurgachi is also connected to the Calcutta Tramways Company connecting Ultadanga to Central and South Kolkata.

Commerce and services

Kankurgachi is primarily marked by a huge outlet of Pantaloons, one of India’s leading retailers. Tanishq, Fabindia, Koutons and M.P. Jewellers has been called a "jewelry hub" with several large jewelry stores in the area.[2]

Kankurgachi is considered to have "an excellent social infrastructure."[1]

In addition, the area is also noted for providing good health care services.[1] Kankurgachi has become home for all the major banks. Axis Bank, HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Allahabad Bank, Indian Bank, UBI and PNB are some of the major banks located here. Many renowned educational and training centers are also situated in this area, the most prominent one being Arena Animation Kankurgachi, one of Eastern India’s largest animation centers. Bengal Chemicals, a renowned chemical trader was found by Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy in Kankurgachi. Mani square is the local mall in this area, which houses various luxury brands and restaurant.The nearest multiplex is Inox Swabhumi.

Education

Purwanchal Vidya Mandir is the main school of the area.the school follows ICSE/ISC curriculum. Other schools are Surah Kanya girls' school, C.I.T. SCHOOL, narkeldanga high school. Gurudas college is the major college in this area. The college is affiliated to the university of Calcutta.
