Use of Anime News Network encyclopedia as a source, tagging edits as minor

Hi TiMike,

I put most of the unsourced anime and manga related BLPs from January 2009 in my watchlist, and noticed that you made edits to some of them recently. It looks like you used Anime News Network's encyclopedia as a source, but it is not considered a reliable source since it is user edited (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Anime and manga/Online reliable sources). Since any user can submit information to the encyclopedia, but only staff memebers can remove information and they rarely have time to do so, often errors remain for years at a time even after people identify them as errors. As such, the encyclopedia should not be trusted as a source, even though in most cases it is accurate. Basically any part of Anime News Network other than the encyclopedia and forums is considered a reliable source, so if you can find a news article on the site that lists a person as having worked on an anime or manga, that is a reliable source. Also, there is a "lookup sources" link on the bottom of each ANN encyclopedia page that will allow you to check if people adding information to the encyclopedia listed a source for that information. Though people aren't required to give a source and often don't, occasionally people will list sources for information that could be used as a reliable source.

Also, I noticed that you were marking your edits as minor when adding references and removing the tags saying that the articles were unsourced. Help:Minor edit says that edits should not be tagged as minor when references are added or tags are removed. The point of marking an edit as minor is so that edits people wouldn't care about are not displayed on their watchlist. However, adding references and removing tags are both things that people are likely to care about. In fact, in this case I was specifically watching the articles you edited solely to look for tags being removed and references being added (though I have my watchlist set to display all edits including minor edits). If in the future you could not mark edits as minor when adding references or removing tags, I'm sure people who have their watchlist set to not display minor edits would appreciate that. For the Delaware Hundreds, do you think we can use geonames.usgs.gov to find the geo coordinates? Wikipedia:Obtaining geographic coordinates says geonames.usgs.gov uses the NAD83 map datum (what ever that means). -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 18:35, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Erroneously adding Category:People from Camden County, New Jersey

TiMike, I just wanted to alert you to the fact that you are inappropriately adding categories using HotCat. Anyone who is in a category such as Category:People from Collingswood, New Jersey does not belong in the parent category People from Camden County. This applies to anyone who is already in a specific town category from Camden County. Lund's article was already categorized 'Sportspeople from Detroit, Michigan'. So adding 'People from Detroit' is considered overcategorization. This edit to the article for Gloucester City Junior-Senior High School was one of more than a dozen edits that added the Category:Buildings and structures in Camden County, New Jersey (or its corresponding category for the city of Camden) to articles for high schools in the county. I guess that each of these high schools does occupy a building, but these are articles about the schools as educational institutions, not as structures. Magazines

Hi, if you tag an article with, e.g., "American bi-monthly magazines", you should not only remove the cat "Bi-monthly magazines", but also the "American magazines" cat. I'm not sure either that it is actually a good idea to intersect the magazines by country and magazines by frequency trees, but that's a different question. I was told before, that you should only show the most specific category. American is a sub of Bi-Monthly, thus it should only be in American bi-monthly. Just so you know, I reverted the article on Rowan Atkinson for the same reason as Drew Barrymore [1]. I didn't understand what speech impediment was being referred to, having heard them in movies and interviews. So, a lisp. I thought Atkinson lisped only when assuming a character. I see what you mean now with Barrymore. Lisping, though, is really more of an accent. As in these cases, understanding is not usually impeded.

For people to qualify for the category, I think there should be a secondary source speaking to that, rather than relying on a blanket definition that a lisp is a speech impediment. I noticed your recent edit to Richard Serra in which you changed {{Reflist|30em}} to {{Reflist|3}}. I have undone the edit as my understanding is that a set number of columns has been depreciated and moving forward they should be based on column width per Template:Reflist#Columns. This states, "The syntax {{Reflist|2}} (for example), which specifies two columns of equal width regardless of the available display width, is deprecated (and is disabled for mobile view)." Use of circa template

Heads-up: here you inserted some {{circa}} uses. One of them replaced part of an image filename - I've made the same mistake myself more than once with an AWB find/replace and not vetting the results. In the other cases, the template is designed to include one or two years as parameters; this has typographical value as explained in the doc. Finally, the {{c.}} template has been deprecated in favor of using the lk=no parameter in circa; the difference is that it suppresses the mouse-hover hint, which is recommended for all but the first use in an article. coordinates for NRHP places

Hi TiMike, thank you for adding coordinates to Olcott Avenue Historic District and other National Register of Historic Places articles. Please note I refined your addition in this diff, in which I placed it within the NRHP infobox and I also noted your username as the source (by "source:TiMike" within the coord template).

There are issues with bad quality coordinates in NRHP articles usually from a bad database, and identifying that the coordinates are from specific editors who used Google maps or whatever will be helpful in rooting out the bad info, later. Your name will likely not get credit forever, but recording usernames for now seems economical before we have some other scheme worked out.

Also if you do change coordinates in an NRHP article, it would be great (but is not essential) if you could also change them in the corresponding NRHP county list-article, using "coordsource=TiMike". This procedure was most recently discussed at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_National_Register_of_Historic_Places/Archive_65#footnoting_coordinates.

Hi - I have noticed that you’ve been adding the category “West Chester University alumni” to many articles. In some cases, the categories for athletes at that university are already in place (example - “West Chester Rams baseball players.” The parent category (university alumni) should not be added if the athlete sub-categories are present. Chester Benjamin

I deleted the article Chester Benjamin, which you edited after Smeenge created the article. It was tsaggrf for [[WP:CSD#A7|A7| speedy deletion. This appeared to be largely an exercise in ancestry/family research. That Benjamin was a descendant of the well-known Taft family in no way indicates his individual nptability. There was no assertion of anything about him that would make him in any way different from tens of thousands of other soldiers who fought in the US Revolution. Moreover, all cited sources seemed to be WP:PRIMARY. Wikipedia normally needs independent secondary sources about a subject to base an article on. Public records are primary sources. Schofield was a frequent houseguest at Redfield's farm, upstream from New Hope, Pennsylvania, and the two would go out painting together, competing to capture the better view. Redfield served on the jury for the 1904 Annual Exhibition of the Carnegie Institute; at which, despite Redfield's opposition, Across the River was awarded the Gold Medal and $1,500 prize. It was not until a 1963 interview that the 93-year-old Redfield revealed the painting as the cause of the 40-year feud between them. Schofield may have painted it in England, but a blindsided Redfield knew that it was a view of the Delaware River, from his own front yard!

Please fix your incorrect removal of women from Category:American physicists and Category:American mathematicians

I see that you have removed many women from Category:American physicists and Category:American mathematicians. I assume you are doing this because they are in the subcategories Category:American women physicists and Category:American women mathematicians. However, those subcategories are clearly marked as non-diffusing subcategories. This means that (like most gender and ethnic based subcategories) we have deliberately determined not to remove their members from the parent category, in order to avoid ghettoizing the women and ethnic minorities into places where they won't be so easily found by people looking for people in the main category. Please stop your removals, and please take the effort to fix the problem you have made by restoring these women to the parent category, rather than making others clean up after your mess. Incidentally, for both the physicists and the mathematicians you can and should diffuse members of the main category into the "by century" category; if you do that properly, you can remove them from the parent category, because the century categories are (as most categories) diffusing. —David Eppstein (talk) 05:50, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
