:::This is a bit of a poser, Treehouse1234. To be a little technical, Wikipedia (like many other encyclopedias, is a Tertiary source based mostly on published, independent, well-edited Secondary sources. It prefers not to rely on Primary sources (of which a birth certificate is a classic example) unless they've been checked and their relevant details published by a Reliable Secondary source, and does not accept uploads of copied original documents, because such things are easily faked online and some mischievous actors do so. For this reason, a Birth certificate would (bizzarely) not be acceptable.

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
• For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
• Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
• If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
• Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
• For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
• New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

Hello Wikipedia Help Desk.

I need your help!

I haven't used my account for a number of years and now I am really confused about my gmail, username and password.

To make things worse, I tried to set up a new account and confused myself further.

Would you help me please. I want to add to "Rudy Buttignol".

Many thanks.

User:Sofiabrampton has not specified an email address. Passwords never expire. If you don't know the password then you cannot gain access to the account. You can create a new account with a different name and say on the two user pages that you are the same user. Most articles including Rudy Buttignol can be edited without logging in. This will show your current IP address in the page history. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:04, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I doubt very much whether that would be appropriate for Wikipedia. If you still want to try, please first carefully read WP:AUTO and WP:YFA. Shantavira|feed me 08:47, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Clinicalharish Creating a new article is the hardest task one can attempt to do on Wikipedia, and it's even harder for those in your situation. Typically, an article is written by an independent editor that takes note of a topic receiving significant coverage in independent reliable sources and chooses on their own to write about it. That occurring is usually a strong indicator of notability. A topic trying to force the issue- as you are doing- is not often successful. The best thing you can do here is abandon attempting to write about yourself and let independent editors wholly unconnected with you do so in time. You should also be advised that an article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. There are good reasons to not want one. Someone could vandalize an article about you to say bad things about you, and although it would be removed, it would still be visible for a time. Any article about you could have any and all information about you from independent reliable sources, whether it is good or bad. Any article about you will not necessarily say what you want it to say, and you cannot prevent others from editing it just because.
I don't doubt that you hold the record that you say you do. You need, however, independent reliable sources with significant coverage of you, and not just telling that you obtained the record. That coverage can't be just an interview with you, but a news outlet that decides to write about you and study your life on their own. If you really think that you have the sources that do that, you may draft and submit an article at Articles for Creation. 331dot (talk) 08:58, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That information is supported by two reliable sources. In order to change it you would need to find a reliable source to support your assertion. Unfortunately "everyone in Sweden" is not a reliable source. Please see WP:RS. Shantavira|feed me 08:52, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure about the sources, I can't see a mention of Turkish in the GP article and I haven't listened to the whole radio interview. TSventon (talk) 09:13, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Outline frame around map object area

Hello, how do I make the map show an outline around an area as seen here:

Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve

I tried copying the template but it doesn't work here:

Umtiza Nature Reserve Maqdisi (talk) 11:11, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Maqdisi I found some Mediawiki guidance, which suggests that you need to link Umtiza Nature Reserve on Open Street Map to its Wikidata item. TSventon (talk) 15:49, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for this, I wouldn't have found this. I added it but I probably have to wait until the maps are updated. Maqdisi (talk) 04:27, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Maqdisi, I think I was lucky to find the guidance. My reasoning was that I couldn't see any difference in Wikipedia, so I looked at Wikidata and didn't see anything there either. I then clicked on a map in Wikidata, clicked on a link to Wikimedia maps and found a link there on How to use objects from OpenStreetMap in your map.
If my suggestion doesn't work you could ask at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). TSventon (talk) 05:29, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon I just saw this page:
Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve
and the openstreetmap entry:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/589157082#map=12/-26.4886/28.2486
which doesn't have the outline. It has the wiki tags for a year now it seems. So I suppose it's an additional thing that's required. How do I even ask a question on Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)? Maqdisi (talk) 09:03, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Maqdisi, VPT works just like this helpdesk, you click on the link, start a new section and add your question. However, I think a more relevant venue would be Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Maps. TSventon (talk) 09:34, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Which person do I use for the SFN?

Hi,

On the Nazi racial theories I want to use the SFN to reference Mein Kampf. Do I use Hitler or Manheim (the translator)?

Thanks.--FriendlyFerret9854 (talk) 11:37, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at the documentation for Template:Cite book, you'll see that it has the fields translator-last1 and translator-first1 for Manheim's name to go along with the author's name. Oops. Clarityfiend (talk) 14:37, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You'd use Hitler for the SFN and 1943 for the year. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:54, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Non-scientific language in some Psychiatry wikipedia pages

Hello,

I am a physician, and I volunteer some of my free time to review and update contents of wikipedia. I have noticed at least one page that include language that may be appropriate for lay-person level, however, the language is not necessarily scientifically accurate. Some of the sentences are quoting books that may have been written to general public, and they are obviously outdated. I shy out of correcting others, as I respect their contributions. However some of the sentences/statements are ambiguous.

My questions are: 1. Do you have subject matter experts who are in charge of reviewing those pages? 2. Is there someone who I can notify in case I come across those pages? 3. Is there a working manual or a specific protocol that explains how to deal with the issues mentioned above?

Thanks, Sarmad — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sarmad.ghazi (talkcontribs) 17:26, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly, the protocol is WP:SOFIXIT. Wikipedia is not run on a permissions or approval system. If you have access to better general-use sources than the texts currently used, please feel free to add or update any relevant information by citing your sources. If someone disputes your changes, discuss the matter on the article talk page and come to an agreement by discussing the matter civily. You might want to read the Wikipedia guidelines for medical articles before proceeding too aggressively, but if you're confident something is wrong as currently written, you can update information with more accurate sources. At the very least, if you want to be more tentative, you can add dissenting viewpoints from additional sources, while leaving the prior information in the article. I hope this helps! --Jayron32 17:34, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Duly noted. Thank you very much. SGhaziMD (talk) 18:20, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sarmad.ghazi you can also get subject-specific advice and guidance at WikiProject Medicine. -- Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 17:55, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. SGhaziMD (talk) 18:19, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sarmad.ghazi: First: Thanks for helping. As an MD, you are likely to be as "expert" as anyone else, and considerably more expert than many. Next: nobody at all is "in charge" of any article. Each article is the collective responsibility of all of the self-selected editors who have worked on the article. This chaotic approach has resulted in the largest and most comprehensive encyclopedia in the world, so I guess we must be doing something right, but we really need folks like you. who are willing to join our collaborative editing effort. -Arch dude (talk) 21:29, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sarmad.ghazi. As pointed out above, you can improve articles just like anyone else as long as you do so in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines. You may, however, want to take a look at WP:EXPERT and WP:JARGON for some general advice given the specifics of your situation. You shouldn't feel you need to automatically defer to others or shy away from editing articles about subjects that you know a lot about, but you shouldn't assume that your expertise gives you some sort of editorial control over such articles. As long as you don't try and win disagreements with other simply based on your expertise, you should be fine. You might also want to consider joining some WikiProjects about subjects you're interested in since I'm sure they'd be happy to have someone with your expertise as a member. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:49, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Changing a Page's Name?

Hello,

I am needing the ability to change a client's page's name. The page is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tahnee_Ahtoneharjo-Growingthunder and the page name should just be "Tahnee Ahtone" while the current name "Tahnee Ahtoneharjo-Growingthunder" should be listed as an alternative / other name in the right bio box.

Please let me know how to proceed to get this change.

Thank you. User4200 (talk) 19:37, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@User4200: Please disclose your paid affiliation on your userpage. Wikipedia article titles go by the subject's common name, and you should probably discuss this on the article's talk page. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 19:41, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User4200, Wikipedia policy is to title an article using the name which reliable independent sources generally use for its subject. The sources cited in that article mostly use "Growingthunder" as part of his her name, so the title of the article should not be changed. Maproom (talk) 20:06, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template editing help

I made this edit but it didn't work as intended. Instead of only replacing the slash "/" with an "or" when |mos=1, it replaced it for all instances. What did I do wrong? --- C&C (Coffeeandcrumbs) 20:44, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't you have written |mos={}?

Strange changes I did not make

Hello. I added a link to new page Sharon Lee Williams to Greatest Hits (Bob Seger album) here. You can see that there are a bunch of other changes made, but I did not make them. Any idea how this happened? Polycarpa aurata (talk) 22:54, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Polycarpa aurata, this tends to happen when users accidentally make their edit to a version of an article which isn't the current one. This causes all the later edits to be undone. I rolled the article back to the version prior to your edit. You may now make your edit to the current version of the article.--Quisqualis (talk) 01:35, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, you apparently edited a 2021 version. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:27, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that would explain it. I thought someone had blanked the "Personnel" section and I started looking in the history. DYK nomination not being reviewed.

Hi everyone, I apologise if this is not the right forum to reach out for help but I have tried to access other communities (such as wikiprojects) to no avail. I submitted a nomination for an article that I contributed significantly to, Subneolithic, on May 11th. I believe some formatting correction was made on the submission that has resulted in it being overlooked for review as a nomination. Thus, despite all other nominations from May 11th being reviewed and edits suggested, my nomination has had no traction. I was wondering what next steps I should make in order to have it reviewed as I have attempted to resubmit (not possible) and have reached out to the community with no success. Thanks in advance! :) OK872 (talk) 02:20, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The best place to ask about DYK problems is at Wikipedia talk:Did you know. I have looked in the DYK nomination queue and your nomination is listed there awaiting a review. It's just that no one has reviewed it yet. It was only nominated on May 11. Reviews are not done in any particular order, you just have to wait for a volunteer to be interested in reviewing that one. There are several other nominations from that date as well as even earlier ones that are unreviewed. Just be patient. MB 03:03, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, thanks so much for your help! OK872 (talk) 04:13, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK872 the additional citations tag will need to be removed before the DYK nomination can be passed, but I see you have already started a conversation about that. TSventon (talk) 09:26, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:NLT

How do you respond to a person threatening legal action, such as in User talk:Thewatcher123, after they attempted to blank sections from Dean Blundell? Nythar (talk) 05:48, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Report it at WP:AN/I, as a general rule. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 06:47, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Nythar: The account violating NLT has already been blocked so there's really nothing more that needs to be done. For future reference, though, the best you can do is remain civil and avoid edit warring with the account. Once a threat like this has been made, you can add a user warning template like uw-legal to the account's user talk page. Since templates are sometimes strongly worded, a follow up post politely explaining that they will need to retract or strikethrough their threat if they want to avoid being blocked and that they can discuss their concerns about the content on the article's talk page might help stop the situation from further spinning out of control. If they double-down and repeat the threat or show no interest in trying to follow WP:DR, then don't engage them anymore and seek administrator assistance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:48, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How do we edit the FiedlNames in infoboxes?

I am trying to develop pages for the Northern Sotho wikipeda (nso). I have not been able to translate the field names in the infobox from English to Northern Sotho (nso). In the Afrikaans case 1 the template for the infobox shows “Amsbekleër” and “Termynaanvang” instead of “Incumbent” and “Assumed Office” as used in the English Cyril Ramaphosa page. In the Zulu case 2 the template for the infobox shows "Manje" and "Isikhathi". I would like to do something similar for the nso page for 3 but use the Northern Sotho words and not the Afrikaans or Zulu words. I looked at Designing_infoboxes which is where I saw the difference between a variable name ( FieldNameA1 ) and a variable value (FieldParameter). However I was not able to find where the FieldNames are defined in the infoboxes. It would seem the multiple levels of transclusion (if I have used the word correctly) hide where these FieldNames are actually defined.

So this is the question: Where does wikipedia define the FieldNames for the "Infobox officeholder" templates for all the different languages? Phillip (talk) 18:31, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ptpare: Languages can make templates independently with different features and implementation. I haven't examined the other languages but "Incumbent" and many other field names are defined with numbered labels in nso:Template:Infobox officeholder/office, e.g. label29 = Incumbent. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:11, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. The problem was finding the "/ office" in "nso : Template : Infobox officeholder / office "
Is there a list or an index somewhere which describes all these subpages or suffixes?
Phillip (talk) 20:33, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ptpare: If you edit a whole page or preview a page then the bottom of the window has an automatically generated list "Templates used on this page" or "Templates used in this preview". You may have to click a small triangle to see the list. Subtemplates like nso:Template:Infobox officeholder/office are included. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:36, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you once again for this. I seem to have got most of the field labels translated in the Northern Sotho version of the Cyril Ramaphosa page 4 .
However a small problem remains with the field labels in the Personal details section of the infobox / sidepanel / template. It would seem that this information has been embedded or transcluded from/in some other template or module. Do you perhaps know how I should go about searching for these field labels? I did edit "https://nso.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Infobox_person" but it would seem that this is not the template that is being used for the transclusion.
Phillip (talk) 19:05, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ptpare: The article uses nso:Template:Infobox officeholder and some of the labels are defined there. The list of transcluded pages does not include nso:Template:Infobox person so it couldn't be that. The list is generated automatically by MediaWiki and will never miss pages. Hello, Cattywampus23. There is no way to predict, because it depends on whether an individual volunteer happens to look at your draft and decide to review it. My guess is that it will be quite quick, because I believe that a reviewer will quickly conclude that you have only one independent source, and that is just a passing mention, so the reviewer will decline it. I may be wrong though. Notability requires several sources each of which is all three of reliable, independent of the subject, and containing significant coverage of the subject. Changing topic name

Anyway I can edit the topic name? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeffp56 (talkcontribs) 16:10, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Jeffp56 I think you are asking if you can change an article title; the answer is yes, an article title can be changed, but should it be changed? This you should discuss with other editors on the article talk page. I'd also be familiar with policies like WP:COMMONNAME. 331dot (talk) 16:12, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, as 331dot says. But what you may absolutely not do is hijack an existing article about something of the same name. The existing article Sartor is about a fish, and editing it to refer to something else is disruptive editing. If the company of that name meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then somebody could write an article about it; and if such an article were accepted, it would be necessary to sort out the disambiguation between the two different subjects of the same name: we have standard ways of handling this.
If you wish to have a go at the difficult task of writing an article about the company, please read your first article carefully. ColinFine (talk) 19:03, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, how do you cite, but you keep it in a link format? For example, Buchholz (1789), but with the link giving a citation. Hope that should clear a little. - TomEpsilon (talk) 16:11, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi TomEpsilon. The article Buchholz hydra doesn't use conventional inline citations, which is why there is a comment at the top. For example, you added today an entry/link Buchholz (1987) which, when clicked, takes readers directly to the source reference at the DOI you specified. This is against the policy (see WP:EL for what external links should be in the body text of articles). Instead, inline citations should be in the form "Bucholz's publication in 1987 was thought...."[1]

.... and all that article should really cite from its sources that way so that readers know and can verify which source supports which claim in the article. Note that journal articles with DOI don't need access dates, as their URL are supposed to be stable. All this is summarised in WP:REFBEGIN, which will give you the full details of how that article might be cleaned up. Good luck. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:35, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to correct the references in this article by removing the (incorrect) references to the 1978 TV miniseries "Little Women", in which Jessica Harper did not appear, to the follow-up 1979 pilot for a failed TV series, in which she starred.

Note that Wikipedia has an article for the miniseries... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Women_(1978_miniseries)

...but not for the TV pilot in which Harper starred.

However, I probably used some incompatible terms (and possibly mark-ups) in my description of the TV show pilot episode. If a Wikipedia editor could check that over and make edits as needed, I'd appreciate it.

Pizza Express

The English Wikipedia was sorely missing an article about pizzerias, so I translated the Finnish article. The Finnish article says that one well-known pizza chain is Pizza Express. Now the Finnish article links to fi:Pizza Express, a Finnish pizzeria chain, while the English article Pizza Express is about an unrelated British pizzeria chain. However, as both are well-known pizzeria chains, I figure it doesn't matter that they are not actually the same pizzeria chain? JIP | Talk 01:18, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@JIP: Translated articles don't have to follow the original article and it's sometimes best to avoid it. Pizza Express redirects to PizzaExpress. Use the article title if you want to include that chain. Pizzeria claims "Famous pizzeria chains include ..." I think all Finnish pizzeria chains should be removed unless they have somehow become famous in other countries. Finland only has 5.5 million people and isn't known for pizza. Category:Pizza chains by country has plenty of others to choose from. Large American/multinational chains are probably best known. I would at least list the three with own subcategories in Category:Pizza chains of the United States. Page views can be a crude estimator of fame. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:54, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would also be cautious about using the word "famous". See WP:FAME. Use "notable" or "popular" if that's what they are, which is more objective. Shantavira|feed me 09:03, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Hi Mikewspc. Is there a reason the url needs to be changed? The doi.org link appears to be a WP:DEADREF, but it's not always necessary to remove or replace a reference just because it's no longer accessible. If the two links lead to the same identical source, then it would make sense to replace the one that's no longer working; if not, then perhaps you should add the worldscientific source as a separate citation. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:48, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to use invisible thumbnail image in article which means when I searching index on Wikipedia, there are images appeared within the article because they are put in the lede section. Thumbnail like this emblem in Foreign relations of Ethiopia does not exist in the page. I want to implement the emblem to the article Ethiopia under federal republic. The Supermind (talk) 06:19, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@The Supermind: You apparently refer to searches in the mobile version of Wikipedia. The page image is shown there, an image picked by mw:Extension:PageImages. A page image must be displayed in the lede and not tiny so you cannot effectively hide it in the article by making it tiny. PrimeHunter (talk) 07:00, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If I understand correctly, you are asking how File:Emblem of Ethiopia.svg shows up in the article Foreign relations of Ethiopia without being added directly to the article. The Emblem of Ethiopia is part of Politics of Ethiopia, which is the little box that appears at the top of most articles related to politics in Ethiopia, including Government of Ethiopia, Federal Parliamentary Assembly, Elections in Ethiopia, and more. The image is part of that template, and the template is transcluded in each of those articles. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 14:34, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

RSN (lack of) feedback

Hello, I tried opening a discussion on the reliable sources noticeboard twice for Thomas de Waal [5][6], but on both occasions there were no replies and the discussions were archived without anyone commenting. What could the next course of action be to assure somebody will review the concerns? ZaniGiovanni (talk) 10:06, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ZaniGiovanni. Just from looking at what you've posted at RSN, I'm going to guess the probably one of the reasons you didn't get any replies had to do with WP:WALLOFTEXT. Your posts were so dense and filled with information that it would've probably taken quite a bit of effort to just read through them, yet alone try to assess them. Try to remember that all editors are WP:VOLUNTEERs which means that many respond to things they're interested in or that they think they can help resolve, and they may avoid things that look as if they're going to take lots of time and effort to figure out.
Perhaps if you try reposting once more but only this time keeping things much simpler, you might get some responses. Try to provide some specific examples from Wikipedia articles where this person is being cited as a reliable source and why you think that's problematic. Try not resolve so many issues in a single post, but just pick the one example which best represents why this person shouldn't be considered a reliable source without all of the extra interpretation or commentary. Once the discussion gets started, you can then start to go into more detail as needed.
Please understand, though, that all sources are WP:BIASED to some degree and a source isn't necessarily not reliable just because it presents or represents a viewpoint that you may not agree with. As long as the source isn't WP:UNDUE (i.e. given more weight than other equally reliable sources), then it might be acceptable for Wikipedia's purposes.
I'm posting this after only briefly scanning over your two RSN posts because I'm simply not familiar enough with the subject matter to make a good assessment. You can also seek input from the members of relevant WikiProjects (e.g. WP:ARMENIA or WP:AZERBAIJAN) to see if others might be aware of this person and be able to help assess his reliablity as a source. Once you start a discussion at RSN, use the template Please see to let the members of those two WikiProjects know about the discussion. Just make sure that by doing so, you don't fun afoul of WP:CANVAS. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:34, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies for posting my own WALLOFTEXT above, but hopefully you'll understand what I'm trying to suggest. -- Marchjuly (talk) 10:37, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Image help?

Template:Unsigned -->— Preceding unsigned comment added by MDmulwa (talkcontribs) 11:57, 23 May 2022 (UTC) Please, help me on how to fix images on my Wikipedia articles.[reply]

@MDmulwa What sort of help do you need with images? I've taken a look at your edits to your userpage and your sandbox, and I don't see where you have tried to add images. Perhaps looking at Help:image tutorial will help? ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 14:25, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please help with changing DOB

Is anyone able to help me change Connor Evans date of birth? It keeps on changing back to 24th January 2001.

He was born 24th January 2002.

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Treehouse1234 (talkcontribs) 14:13, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a reliable source that his birth year is 2002? This clearly lists his birth date as 2001. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:18, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I am his mother and I gave birth to him on the 24th January 2002. I have his birth certificate but not sure how to upload it. Treehouse1234 (talk) 17:46, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This is a bit of a poser, Treehouse1234. To be a little technical, Wikipedia (like many other encyclopedias) is a Tertiary source based mostly on published, independent, well-edited Secondary sources.
Where articles about living persons are involved, Wikipedia has particularly strict rules governing what can be included and what rules must be followed, in order to protect those subjects and their families, etc. (see WP:BLP). Bear in mind that as of now, Wikipedia has no proof that you are who you say you are (though I am not actually doubting it). If the current, referenced date is disputed (and it is, by you), and cannot be contradicted by one or more "better", published sources, it would be preferable to remove it until such sources are available.
Tedious though it may seem, your ultimately best option would be to persuade the currently-used source to correct itself (thus obviating future disputes) and/or to get the correct date published in a (more) Reliable source as described above. However, if you can find some already-published (Reliable) sources (such as newspaper articles) that corroborate your date, and can link to or give bibliographical details of them in the Talk page of the article so that others can check them and make the correction (you should really not be editing the article yourself, as you have an obvious Conflict of interest), someone will doubtless do so.
I'm sorry if this seems annoyingly bureaucratic, but Wikipedia's rules in this regard are designed to protect subjects from misrepresentation. Incidentally, I'm a Rugby fan in the UK, and I look forward to seeing Connor play in future competitions :-). {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.209.235.54 (talk) 19:16, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism help request from SarahTHunter

I have noticed some vandalism at Anderson High School, Lerwick. Namely, this page has been repeatedly vandalised due to "controversies" section being uploaded again and again, this is the third time that I've had to take this down and I'd like to request for semi-protection to prevent this happening again. Would an editor please assist me with fixing it? Thank you, SarahTHunter (talk) 15:53, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

On the surface they look like good factual references to a crime that happened at the school. It's not vandalism to add that information. Wikipedia is not here to manage the school's reputation as you seem to imply on the talk page. - X201 (talk) 16:05, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I understand but the problem is that it gives the school a really bad reputation and I've been made aware of this section by a close friend who works in this school. I've been a pupil at this school too and having this plastered about my old high school is disgusting. SarahTHunter (talk) 17:34, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Please see WP:NOTVAND. That's not vandalism. While there may be other issues with including such information, such as WP:UNDUE, I see no evidence that the information you removed is vandalism. It looks like you object to including that information, which is your right per WP:BRD, but the fact that you want it removed doesn't make it vandalism. --Jayron32 16:07, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I believe it does make sense now. Like I said above, the controversies section has been deleted by me three times and it's getting on my nerves when it keeps reappearing. I've asked for semi-protection a while but I didn't get any success (the edits have been done by new users and I believe that they are school pupils who are misbehaving). I have a very close friend who works at this school and said that she'd like this section to be taken down because it gives the school a bad reputation. Okay there are news stories about the controversies but I honestly feel it is really inappropriate to put it up! Anyway, I'm stuck in the middle with this as it has been plaguing on my mind for months since this all started. SarahTHunter (talk) 17:59, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So much to unpack. First WP:3RR, read it, and then I would advise you getting a mug of tea and stepping away from WP for the rest of the day (or at least the article). Next, the article does not belong to your friend or the school. It is Wikipedia's article, the school has no control over it apart from requesting inaccuracies are fixed. This is not an inaccuracy. By your own admission, you are WP:COI editing for your friend by proxy. I'd advise another mug of tea and stepping away from the article. The only question to be raised about this content is how noteworthy it is. Personally, I think a school failing in it's safeguarding procedures twice in nine years, and failing in one of the worst ways possible, IS noteworthy. - X201 (talk) 18:50, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I don't think that can be counted as vandalism. The information has several reliable sources, and is probably noteworthy. Bazza (talk) 16:07, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How do you apply for page protection? Can someone show me a link for this. SarahTHunter (talk) 18:10, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@SarahTHunter: page protection will not help. You are engaged in a content dispute, and page protection if for vandalism and/or edit warring. When there are two legitimate sides to a dispute, then an admin is not supposed to pick one or the other, so protection might freeze on the one you think is "wrong". Instead, you must engage with the other editor(s) on the article's talk page and reach a consensus as to what should be in the article. If you keep reverting, you will be administratively in the wrong even if you feel you are morally in the right, and you will be blocked. -Arch dude (talk) 18:37, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Daryl McCormack birthday change date

How do I change Daryl McCormacks birthday to the 20th of January? - which is his correct DOB not December. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tillyjames123 (talkcontribs) 16:44, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Are you referring to Daryl McCormack or Darryl McCormack? Because neither list a birth date in January and the first doesn't list a birth date and won't unless a source can be provided. PRAXIDICAE💕 16:46, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Short citation usage

This is a question about the circumstances when short citations are an appropriate citation style in an article that uses more than one style (also uses standard inline citations). This question concerns the article Michael Gove and the format of its references for The Price of Peace, Unleashing Demons and Dods Parliamentary Companion. These three books are cited once, using standard citations, whereas many different pages of the book Michael Gove: A Man in a Hurry are cited, with short citations used. Should I create a short citation for a book if only one page of the book is referenced once in an article (as it is with the citing of each of the first three aforementioned books), or should a standard citation be used? Or is it more appropriate to use short citations for all the books cited in the article if the short citation style is already used for one (which in this case is A Man in a Hurry)? Thank you in advance. Andysmith248 (talk) 16:58, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding of WP:CITESTYLE is that style citation should be consistent, so picking one style and sticking with it is WP-good. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:33, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Gråbergs Gråa Sång, thank you for your reply. The use of short citations for Michael Gove: A Man in a Hurry allows for many different pages of the source to be cited without having to copy the entire citation. I would like to keep this as it is, but I am unsure of the ideal citation style for the first books I mentioned. Andysmith248 (talk) 17:46, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Andysmith248, I think it's a bit eye-of-the-beholder. Personally I'd prefer turning the book into a named "reftoolbar" style cite and then add Template:Rp as appropriate in-text. Re-using named refs is nice and easy. And all the "Benetts" under references get merged into one. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:58, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
...and now I've learnt from WP that Gove was trapped in a lift for 30 min. I wish I hadn't. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:05, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
