The Al Hamra Tower is a skyscraper currently under construction in downtown Kuwait City, Kuwait. Designed by award-winning Chicago-based architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the tower will be a signature and spectacular landmark on the skyline, with its elegant curvilinear design and all-glass exterior. Upon completion, the tower will rise to 412 meters high, making it the tallest building in Kuwait (overtaking the nearby Liberation Tower), as well as one of the top 25 tallest in the world. It will also be the tallest sculpted tower in the world.
The site used to have two popular theaters next to each other. The Al Hamra Theater (the Tower's Namesake) which used to play Arabic or Western films, and the Al Firdous Theater which used to exclusively play Bollywood films.
The tower will include 98,000 square meters of commercial and office space. The building will connect to a five-story retail mall which totals 23,000 square meters of retail space and will include an integrated theater complex, and an 11-story parking garage. The Al Hamra Tower will be built on an 18,000-square meter construction site in the East Maqwa district of Kuwait City. The developer is Al Hamra Real Estate with Ajial Real Estate representing the owner.
The complex will contain a 77-story tower consisting of prime office space and crowned by a spectacular rooftop restaurant, a spa and a attached lifestyle shopping center. The shopping center will include a 10-screen cineplex which will also have IMAX theaters.
The tower's construction progress (as of September 11, 2007) has greatly advanced, with the tower's foundations now complete and the tower itself nearly nine stories high. The eleven-story car parking is currently eight floors overground, while four floors of the shopping center have also risen overground. Topping-out is scheduled for late 2008, with the tower opening in early 2009.
Turner Construction is in charge of the tower's construction.
