Help Page Patrollers are a group of Wikipedians who patrol the help desk and help users who have placed the {{helpme}} template on their talk pages. The patrol is an optional service. Patrollers can come and go, and there is no official sign up process.

Regular patrollers may add {{User HPP}} or {{user help desk}} to their user page:

It was speedied. I was notified to request assistance from the WP:GL. I did so immediately. I recieved no talk page notice of the imminent deletion possibility. Utah State Cleanup

I've recently been working a little on cleaning up the Utah State University page. One particular section, on USU's OpenCourseWare seems to be in pretty bad need of a grammar and structure overhaul. I'd do it myself, but I don't really know anything about OpenCourseWare. Is there a way to tag it for grammar cleanup so someone with a better understanding of the subject could rework it? There is no correct answer, just tell the interviewer about yourself, your interests, your strengths, and what you enjoy to do. Other languages added to Wikipedia

Hi I am wondering how you get to add other languages to Wikipedia. I often use wikipedia for information and always have to translate my questions before I am able to use the site.

I would love to see Afrikaans added to your list of languages.

Slow link to Wikipedia and unavailability of images

Maybe it is a localised problem. Something to do with your own internet browser. I am using Internet Explorer with a broadband connection, and I'm having no problem with it. Page looks different, when logged in or logged out

I recently edited Template:Location map Haiti however my recent edit does not show up when I'm logged in, it does however when I'm logged out. I tried this on IE and Firefox. When I'm logged in I can still access the latest revision by clicking in the history however. Also the pages which transclude the template, show the correct latest version. I remember something like from a while ago with the Hitler article being vandalised, but not visible to users who were logged in. Anyone know how to fix this ? Adding button (next previous)

When will article appear?

Hope I'm in the right place. I didn't find a more appropriate place to ask this.

I wrote a short piece on an area where I live called Whiteway, Bath.

The item appears when you enter "Whiteway, Bath" into the search engine but it does not appear for "Whiteway" on its own. I would like to change that. How?

I Can't Find the Right Template

I've been looking for over half an hour for a template I'm pretty sure exists. I know I've seen it somewhere before but it is being ever-so-elusive now. It's the disclaimer template you can put on top of a draft or copy of an article that is in your sandbox. I've searched through WP:TM and the related categories. Have I gone insane? Am I imagining things? Am I staring it in the face and not realizing it?

I'm overhauling an article in my sandbox and would like to put a disclaimer on it to distinguish it from the article namespace. Help with delicate issue

Hello :) I have a problem. I am a registered user of Wikipedia, but in another language, which I would like not to mention yet, as the problem I'm refering to is delicate. Going straight to the point, I feel, and based on my reasoning capacity, I understand, that I've been unfairly banned from that Wikipedia, with a bann for undefined period of time. Before explaining that situation, I would like to ask the Help Desk a simple question, as Jimbo Wales suggests in his user page for us to do. This simple question is, then, if I can be helped by the Help Desk in the matter I'd explained at the top of the paragraph. Finaly, coming back to the issue "unfair bann", and just for a bit wider introduction, I'd like to explain that I was banned for undefined period of time by an administrator whom in his justification alleged that he had the authority to ban me using the policy "ignore all rules" and based merely in a supposition and that the administrator that revised my defence didn't invite me to talk about it, but merely confirmed the mentioned supposition as consistent proof of my guiltiness and closed the two-sentence refutation of my complaint with a personal remark clearly mocking me and celebrating my banning, even though I had no relation wathsoever with both administrators. I must say also that I have benn user of that wikipedia for just one month and that I have contributed in many articles in that wikipedia, such as the biography of the brithish philosopher and novelist "Olaf Stapledon", and the articles "Moral Value", "Justice", "Truth" (in agreement with another wikipedist), "Order" and "Axiology". What browser are you copying from, and what application are you pasting to? What happens when you try to copy and paste? When you talk about our website, you do mean Wikipedia, right? I am trying to create an account on "weatherpedia". But i get this.

There are apparently different sites called Weatherpedia. I guess you are referring to http://weatherpedia.easternuswx.com and not the site NanohaA'sYuri linked to, but it makes no difference. Wikipedia and http://weatherpedia.easternuswx.com use the same MediaWiki software but are otherwise unrelated. Wikipedia is a Wikimedia project and Weatherpedia is not. Was my account removed?

I used an account with the login name "aldomedina". However today I couldn't access anymore. I recreated the account using the same username without getting any error messages. I believe my previous editions were deleted. I remember the last article I edited was the "Click Mexicana"'s one, and I don't see my name anywhere in the history.

I want to know if this is a mistake I made, some technological problem, or some editorial problem.

While it's technically possible that your account could have been renamed, that shouldn't have happened without your consent (and indeed request). It is impossible for an account to be deleted entirely. I'm afraid the most likely possibility is that you've just misremembered your username. Algebraist 00:07, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

{E/C} Since the errors you list are normally unlikely to occur and so much more unlikely in combination (accounts can't be deleted, except by developers; page histories are very robust and individual edits can only be removed from them by checkusers, barring crude deletion and restoration), I suspect that you attempted to create an account but it didn't actually take, and then when you edited, you did so under your ip address without realizing it. Is that possible? One way to check is to look at some of the edits to Click Mexicana by ips in or about the time you think you created you account using the radio buttons in the edit history to compare diffs.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:08, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pedantry

I have been reading the article College Town and on the talk page I came across a discussion over whether college town should be the correct term as some may technically be cities or villages. I stated there that 'college town; is the term in common use and that in my opinion it is the job of an encyclopedia to state what is in common use and not what should be in common use. I'm sure these examples of pedantry are fairly common on wikipedia but didn't find anything in the content guidelines about this. Prawn

This article has been under attack for the past thirty minutes. It seems the user is switching computers to not use up the same IP, since the vandalism says the exact same thing on each edit. I just talked to NJGW who created the page and I think he was surprised because he didn't intend to create the page as a second nomination. Can you do that? If I go and make a page on XXX I figure it will pop up (3rd nomination) because there's an automatic protocol built into the system that keeps track of things. If you create the page manually then you can call it anything and I don't think there is an automatic protocol. But it appears from the edit summary of NJGW that the page was created with Twinkle. I don't have Twinkle and don't know how it selects the page name. This is pure speculation but maybe NJGW chose a wrong Twinkle function which creates the page with "(2nd nomination)" without checking whether a 1st nomination exists - or maybe there was a Twinkle error. If you create a new page then I suggest calling it "(3rd)" (omitting "nomination" is recommended), and explaining on the page that there probably is no 1st. Looking for a third party

Hi. I'm reasonably new to Wiikipedia and have been editing an article Fire pit because it read like a sales pitch about selling fire pits for the garden. However, I don't know a huge amount about garden-fire-pits, and whilst I've put some information in about fire pits in history, it seems like it's lacking a bit now. Can anyone help me improve the article without it being too short OR an advert for fire pits?

How to Note that on many wikis you have to be logged in, and there may be a set length of time that you will have to have had an account for (often four days).

With the correct page displayed, click on the "Move" tab near the top of the page (in default Monobook skin). You'll be asked for a new name for the page, and given the option to also move the page's talk page. NOTE: Unless you know what you're doing, it's safest to say yes. As of MediaWiki 1.5, the reason for the move can be given, like an edit summary.

Click the move button and the page will be renamed to the new title. The old title will become a redirect page, so any links to the old title will still go to the new page. However, note that double redirects (pages that redirect to the original page), will not automatically follow to the new page, so you will have to refer them manually (as explained at How to fix a double redirect and Checking for double redirects.)

after a successful page move, a page looking like this will be shown: MediaWiki:Movepage-moved;

PICUM title

When I tried to create a page, a message came up that I cannot use the title PICUM for a page because it is on a blacklist. I don't really understand why, and can I change this? What is the exact name of the page you tried to create? I don't see a problem with the names PICUM or Picum. Are you sure the message was not about a blacklisted external link on the page you tried to create? There are problems with you creating an article about your own organization. OK. I didn't get any message for PICUM on my admin account like I have gotten for other protected titles and I couldn't find any log for PICUM. The problem is apparently that it matches a regexp protection at MediaWiki:Titleblacklist on page names containing "CUM". Some vandals create or move pages with dirty words in the name. Sometimes links are added to Wikimedia Commons (here), which is a repository of free content images. Often these images are more topical too, as they have been uploaded by users. To add this type of link, add {{commons|SUBJECT OR TOPIC}}. Changing PNG to SVG in an article

I originally posted this here but was advised to post it again, here. So, here goes:

The above is a favourite hobby of mine on Wikipedia and is usually fairly straightforward (just editing the image link in the article, so long as an SVG exists). However, with this page the PNG seems to be embedded in some template - {{runic}}, I think - but I can't make head nor tail of Template:runic. How do I change the PNG contained within to an SVG? Thanks in advance.

The .svg image in the table on the right of the article comes from here, a template created for the article. User:Leolaursen edited this template on 14 July to make the picture a .svg. See this difference for how they did it. To find a template like this, look on the main article page and you will see something like this at at the top: {{EXAPMLE infobox}}. The just type in Template:EXAMPLE infobox to the search box to see the template.

Look in \WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc. If you have a file named "hosts", open it in notepad. Look at any lines that start with "127.0.0.1" and check the URL after it. These URLs are blocked. Lupin's tool

I've been around Wikipedia for a while now, and have had Lupin's tool installed but have never really used it due to errors it caused on my PC. Recently I have tried using the "edit history stats" tool to see who's made the most edits to a certain article, and my name does not appear on the list despite the fact that I have made many edits to the article. That was my point: If you mean Java, than the MediaWiki is incapable of handling it (it's web-based, and you can't run applets on it. Mediawiki:Common.js is JavaScript, not Java). If you mean JavaScript, it could be, but is disabled due to the fact that well written malicious JavaScript could compromise your account, destroy the wiki within seconds, etc. etc. etc. etc. if it ran automatically for all users. Using episode list template

I'm having a bit of trouble with the "Episode list" template that I created (Template:Episode list/All Saints). I have been using it in the transclusion of stuff from All Saints (season 11) to List of All Saints episodes. I want to add an 'Audience' column to the episode table at All Saints (season 11) but I dont want it to show up on the table at List of All Saints episodes (under season 11). I believe it's fixed, now. The column existed on both All Saints (season 11) and List of All Saints episodes, but was only fed data on the former. Is it wise for me to make an account?

I've been using this site for a while now, initially for research purposes, but more recently I have begun making the occasional anonymous edit. I was thinking about creating an account, but I don’t really see the benefit of doing so, and now I have read something on user:barneca’s talk page which has kinda put me off making an account. The user says "Although I think I’m a very low-value target for Hivemind-type people (I don’t really do controversy much), I’ve simply been too careless, and left too many clues to my real life identity sprinkled around the internet, and have no desire to risk being put thru what others have been put thru recently." An account at base is more anonymous than editing under your ip address. Ip addresses can be traced to internet service providers and to geologic locations and in some cases to the actual computer being used. An account shields you from this type of tracing by the general public. Of course, if you post a profile and include volunteered personal information, then that can lead to somneone finding out your real identity. I don't know what happened to Barneca, but I can tell you that there are a number of websites dedicated to finding out the real identities of Wikipedia administrators they dislike and smearing them. The quote shows by admission that it was the posting of details and clues about himself/herself that led to whatever vulnerability was exploited. Hi. I don't really think you need to worry about the issues mentioned on Barneca's usertalkpage. The thing is, a select few high-profile users and administrators are harrased by off-wiki projects (like ED, WR, and 4C). The "Hivemind" that she talks about is sort of like an attack site by wikipedia review (which I'm not allowed to link to). Simply creating an account does not put you at risk for such problems, as long as you don't leave your personal information all over the Internet. I currently run an internal wiki tool for my company and would like to add infobox's to client profiles. equipment lists

my question has to do with world war two equipment lists, should these be posted or not? for instance, if you look up a "SCR-584 radar" it stands to reason that there is an scr-1 through scr-583 ect. most of these are radios. each one you could write a page on, some of these sets had a vehicle made just for them. which is a hole nuther list. and of coures each vehicle had a mfgr, which is a hole nuther list. the cross refrenceing would be nice, but?

most of these lists already exhist on other sites but there "dumb" lists. another words thay dont click to other items, bottom line, I dont want to spent 5,000 houres doing the data entry only to have it deleted, becouse its not an "article"

On a side note, there are actually some computer programs (called "bots") owned by some of our users which can take care of laborious tasks like that if it ever comes up. I agree with User:Someguy1221 that there might not be enough information available to get more than a link out of it though. Maybe you could write an article about the series as a whole? Not sure what you're referring to but, generally, watermarks are used to explicitly call out copyright on the image. Since Wikipedia prefers freely distributed images, and the primary focus of the image should be its subject, watermarks seem contrary to building an encyclopedia. Did you forget your password? If so and if you submitted an e-mail address when you registered your account, you should be able to have your password e-mailed to you by following the link on the log-in page. I see from User:Martin Jee that you are a researcher for Mr Heald. That puts you in a conflict of interest, so your edits will be heavily scrutinised. A mother in need!

I am a single mother of four children that has been in court for three years now and got full custody of my children but yet the police will not inforce this order. My son is with his father a man with a history of abuse and I have police inforcement in my order. Why is it that a police officer can look at me in the face and say, "That order means nothing to me? but yet it's just a paper?" Why did I spend so much time for my children safety if the law doesn't protect me? How do I get my son back? A worried mother that only had 2 of her kids at home worring sick of their bother or my son? I was in the hospital all day yesturday because I can't take this stress anymore. Are you sure that another page is not causing the problem? Doing that should make you end up at European Food Safety Authority. Wikipedia will not attempt to download anything but a file called "index.php", and that is only when you ask for it by appending &action=raw to the URL. My computer sometimes does that as well, it is very annoying. It seems to think that the page your are opening is a document or other such file and that the website is trying to download it. Restoration of Article

I mistakenly edited an article "Nova Lehota" and would like to restore the original text while saving my edition as a new article. Can't find how to do it in your FAQs and tutorials. How can I restore the older version of an article if possible? I do not want to loose my editing too, so I want to esteblish/split the new article.

I wanted to make an article about a village Nova Lehota which has been a former German minority inhabitat. However, there has been another village of this name with its own article which I thought to be about mine but with wrong data. I only later realized I ruined someone's article. Therefore I want to restore the original article about the village of the same name and proceed working on my own village's article.
