Eduardo Saverin (born March 19, 1982 in São Paulo, Brazil)[2] is an American of Brazilian descent who is an entrepreneur and co-founder of Facebook, along with Mark Zuckerberg and others.[3] He owns a 5% share of Facebook, worth $2.5 billion USD as of January 4, 2011.[4]
Personal life
Saverin was born in São Paulo, Brazil to a Brazilian Jewish family,[5] and raised in Miami, Florida. His father was in export and real estate. He attended Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami, and went on to Harvard College, where he was a member of the Phoenix S.K. Club, and president of the Harvard Investment Association.[6] In 2006, Saverin graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with an A.B. in Economics. He is currently believed to be living in Mozambique.[7]
The verifiability of the claims made in this article is disputed. |
Saverin met Mark Zuckerberg during his freshman year and later co-founded Facebook with Zuckerberg during his sophomore year, assuming the role of CFO and business manager.[8] Due to internal conflicts and differences of opinion with Zuckerberg over the following summer, when Saverin was living in New York (where he worked briefly as a finance intern), Saverin drifted away from what was then known as "thefacebook", a fast-growing Silicon Valley start-up. After outside investors—principally venture capitalist and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel and Napster co-founder Sean Parker—took control of the start-up's finances and capital needs and backed Zuckerberg as its CEO, Saverin's role diminished and his influence evaporated. Saverin sued Zuckerberg and Facebook in April 2005, after he dropped Saverin's percentage ownership share of Facebook to 0.010%.[9] Saverin won in court; the court verified 7% ownership.[citation needed] Saverin also won his claim to label himself as a co-founder of Facebook.[10]
Depictions in media
In the film The Social Network, Eduardo Saverin is played by actor Andrew Garfield. The film depicts the relationship between him and Mark Zuckerberg from the creation of Facebook to Saverin taking legal action against Zuckerberg. In a recent interview on Conspiracy Worldwide Radio, Ben Mezrich, the author of one of the books that The Social Network movie was based upon, discussed his relationship with Saverin and his motivation when writing the book. The Social Network was released on 1 October 2010.[11]
