2011–2012 Egyptian revolution - Post revolution timeline article title
Hello. Due to the overall length of the 2011–2012 Egyptian revolution article I wanna create an timeline article which hosts the timeline events under the presidency of Mohamed Morsi as described here 2011–2012_Egyptian_revolution#Under President Mohamed Morsi. My problem is the title for this article. Is "2011–2012 Egyptian revolution - Post revolution timeline under Mohamed Morsi" appropriate or is "Post revolution timeline of the 2011–2012 Egyptian revolution" better? In general: What is an appropriate title? Thanks in advance. <small><span class="autosigned">— Preceding unsigned comment added by P3Y229 (talk • contribs) </span></small><!-- Template:Unsigned -->

Editing the page

I did a minor edit to the article icebox, all i did was indent the paragraphs and add 1 sentence, but i think i corrupted the article. what do i do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheDamnedIV (talkcontribs) 04:11, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can't use spaces at the start of a line. The Wikipedia software interprets that as a command to change the formatting. If you read the tutorial, it should help you figure out how to insert the formatting you're aiming for. RudolfRed (talk) 04:17, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, it looks like another user has already fixed this. RudolfRed (talk) 04:19, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have been using Wikipedia:AutoEd since June 28, accessing it from the link at the top of the article page and/or the edit page. Now neither are available. I wonder if this has anything to do with the recent changes to editing Wikipedia earlier this month. Can anyone advise? -- Gareth Griffith-Jones/GG-J's Talk 09:11, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User name and account

Hi I am setting up an account for myself (Frank Akinsete http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Frank_Akinsete&diff=cur) and I have put my user name as my own name as I thought I would have to use the name for the page I am creating however when I view my wikipedia page the title comes up as Editing User: Frank Akinsete when I look at other peoples pages theirs just comes up with their name. I have tried looking in the help guide but find it very confusing - should my username be different to my name that I want my page to be .... please advise. Many thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frank Akinsete (talkcontribs) 12:57, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your user name is the name you edit under. Your user page, which is User:Frank Akinsete, is somewhere to tell other users about yourself and the kind of editing interests you have: in other words, information about you as a user of Wikipedia. Do you mean that you are trying to create an actual article about yourself in the encyclopaedia, entitled "Frank Akinsete"? If so, please read WP:BIO WP:AUTO and WP:COI before you go any further. You have an enormous conflict of interest, and are very strongly discouraged from writing about yourself on Wikipedia. If you do decide to create such an article in spite of this, you should use the Article creation wizard and submit it for review by other editors before it goes into the mainspace. - Karenjc 15:08, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

editorial incompetence

Hi, someone at your end has declined publication because the article lacks "notability". Please carry out the due diligence, ignorance on the part of Wikipedia editors is unacceptable. Please broaden your reference resources, the individual in question is a national celebrity of the 1950s and 1960s with international reputation. Please name and shame the individual who falsely advised on this matter. Such lame decisions along with poor editorial control underpin the reasons for the wider public refusal to accept seriously any information found in Wikipedia. It is the editors' responsibility to ensure accuracy of information and siple rejection through editorial incompetence is unacceptable.

Yours truly,

Dr Bonev, MRSC, PPhys — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bonev (talkcontribs) 13:12, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It would help if we knew which article/draft you are referring to. Presumably it's Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Dr Nadejda Hadjiivanova?--ukexpat (talk) 14:12, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is it editorial incompetence or is it that the author didn't do a good enough job of portraying the importance of the subject 24.160.140.240 (talk) 14:28, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, two things. First, we require contributors to assume good faith and to be civil. Your post above does neither of these things, and you need to reconsider your approach urgently if you wish to interact with other editors here. Please do not do this again. Second, you are labouring under a basic misapprehension about the review process. It is indeed the editors' responsibility to ensure accuracy of information, and in this case, the editor is you. The article was declined not because "it lacks notability", but because it fails adequately to demonstrate the notability of the subject - unless it does demonstrate it, it will automatically be declined. Reviewers don't do research about article subjects - that's the job of the submitting editor. Nobody is going to go off and look up the subject in reference books, or check whether she meets the Wikipedia notability standards. If you want an article about her in the encyclopaedia, it's your responsibility to ensure that the article asserts how she meets those standards, and provides checkable sources to back up your assertion. Wikipedia does not require all sources to be in English, but this is the English Wikipedia. I would strongly suggest you (1) read the advice in the decline template carefully, (2) read the notability criteria at WP:ATHLETE and ensure the article wording shows exactly how the subject satisfies them, and (3) find some English language sources that back this up, so that any reviewer checking the article can see clearly how Nadejda Hadjiivanova satisfies the criteria. For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure she satisfies them amply, but unless the article demonstrates this clearly it can't be accepted. Oh - and you need to change the title too, as one reviewer pointed out, we don't use "Dr" in article titles. See Wikipedia:manual of style. - Karenjc 15:38, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Google search "Nadejda Hadjiivanova" -Wikipedia gives zero relevant information for me so without searching the name in Bulgarian I cannot even confirm she exists. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:56, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

List of Wiki markups and their uses

Dear Sirs
Can you provide me a link or at least a hint to find all the markups usable in Wikipedia. (I promise, I won't add them to Help:Wiki markup to make it explode.) At least you provide me a list of <span>'s markups like id="toctitle" or even simpler things like class="error". Otherwise I will have to look at the html markups of different pages, even the blank pages, to learn and classify all of them :(

Are you looking for Help:HTML in wikitext? Most of the "class" and "id" names are listed at Wikipedia:Catalogue of CSS classes. But you shouldn't need to know anything about them in order to edit articles; article markup should be kept simple so that other editors can understand and improve your work. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:17, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much. Both of them helped me a lot. (Of course, no way I am going to use them in to the articles, directly. I just wanted to use them in talkpages, templates (only when necessary), userpages, etc.)

One more doubt,
Does every thing I see in WP under class="..." or id="..." like ui-button, ui-widget, ui-corner-all etc.[1] goes into it Wikipedia:Catalogue of CSS classes? What about role="button"? Some works for div but not for span. e.g., <div id="mw-page-base" class="noprint">
So does anyone mind creating a new page for all that is applicable to span so that it will be an aid for creating/beautifying templates, userpages etc.?···Vanischenu「m/Talk」 18:27, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Adding photo to article

(edit conflict) There's an image already at Commons, File:StateLibQld 1 133465 Arlanza (ship).jpg, which is used in the German Wikipedia article. Is this the image you want to use? If so, then it's easy: add it in a simple form to the article RMS Arlanza (1912) by putting exactly the following code at the top of the page: This code specifies the filename, the position and size, and puts the image in a box with a caption. If you want to use a different picture that is not already uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, you will need to determine its copyright status and then upload it with the correct licence before you can paste it into the article in the same way. Instructions for this procedure are at Wikipedia:Uploading images. - Karenjc 15:59, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

K2 peak

Sir, I have noticed in the information given regarding the K2 peak. It is undoubtedly the second highest peak in the world. But K2 or Godwin Austin is in India in the Gilgit area in Jammu & Kashmir. That K2 is the highest peak in Pakistan is an ill conceived and misleading information. Please get corrected that the second highest peak in the world K2 is in India. I'm sure you would make necessary changes in the wiki paedia and inform me regarding your initiative.

Thanking you

Question about GA nominations

Hi, is there a limit to the number of GA nominations a single editor can make? I have an article I want to nominate shortly (once it goes through a copy edit), but have another pending at GAN. I know Peer Reviews and FACs are limited to one article per editor, but is the same true for GAN? Paul MacDermott (talk) 16:50, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting question, never heard of any limit and after looking at WP:GAC and just using the logic of WP:COMMON I don't see and wouldn't think there would be (Interested to confirm this if any editor has a fact I missed). However seeing there is a backlog of review at GA nominations it may be useful to not limit oneself in reviewing as well! Marketdiamond (talk) 17:13, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I couldn't see anything when I looked through the guidelines, but thought it was worth asking just in case. Paul MacDermott (talk) 17:20, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify I don't consider myself an expert on WP:GAC, so I may be corrected. Marketdiamond (talk) 17:38, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Astrology

There have been a debate issue about the Chinese Zodiac signs and the Western Horoscope signs, I am going to remove the mythology from the Western Horoscope signs due to WP:BOLLOCKS. I went to the page protection page and wanted to protect the signs of these zodiac, because they are a reliable source to Eastern values and they constantly being vandalized by IP's and one user believes it's "crap" which is unethical of the user, I want the share of the same values with the Western Horoscope signs, because they both are psuedoscience source, but mainly from mythological sources and I am hoping to keep them as they were for mythological purposes, I tried hard in to protecting these articles and allowed the IP who helped. Yes, to some it may be fiction, but it is mythology to another nations heritage and I don't want another horoscope deleted while the other is better, please at protect these pages and the Western Astrology signs for the WP:RS is pertains to mythology. One administrator will be deleting the revisions. Although, I believe it was reliable to mythological uses, and not from another user unethical reason of "Pure Crap".

Yes, fiction, pertaining to mythology, but it doesn't need deletion, and at least if there is any way to the informative sentences. Western Astrology already had mythology sections, and Chinese Zodiac signs as well, but since it is going to be deleted I suggest removing the mythology from the Western Horoscope. I want to work for both sources from mythology, and it is not just Bollocks, but since this occurred I would go on and remove it from the Western Horoscope, although both sources were fact from their mythology, and there are IPs who do mess with one culture to another. I would like to build more on the Chinese Zodiac the sources of mythology and its heritage it pertains to their countries values about mythology and folkore.--GoShow (............................) 16:57, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You seem very informed on that subject, I see a few different things going on here. Word of caution, however, before you--as you say--"remove the mythology from the Western Horoscope signs" (and thus potentially violate WP:POINT) you may want to preserve editors WP:AGF in your actions by instead directing your energy to starting a WP:RFC or seeking a 3rd party to intervene in the Chinese Zodiac additions. I can appreciate that some editors deep into those projects can become slightly myopic (indeed that is simply human nature) and may become rigid with certain views. That is why the two options of RFC and 3rd party may assist in resolving this amicably and through compromise. Wish you a happy resolution to this. Disambiguation of human names

Let's say I have 15 notable people named John Doe and I want to write articles about all of them. 5 of them were politicians and the other 10 had different professions. Some of those 15 are alive and well and others deceased. I would create a page called John Doe (disambiguation) where I list all the John Does and link to their respective article. Maybe I would write about one of the John Does, who I deem most notable, under the title John Doe, or just have that page link to the disambiguation page. However, I'm not sure how I should seperate all the politicians from one another. Here are some ideas:

• John Doe (musician)
• John Doe (politician, 1944), a politician who was born 1905 and is still alive.
• John Doe (politician, 1905–1985), a politician who was born 1905 and died 1985.
• John Doe (Prime Minister), a politician who became Prime Minister.
• John Doe (scientist)

Can somebody provide me with a general guideline? Cheers. Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson (talk) 18:23, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can also disambiguate the politicians by the highest positions they held:
• John Doe (US Senator)
• John Doe (Govenor of Texas)
• John Doe (Member of Parliament, Australia)
• John Doe (Mayor of Birmingham, England)
• John Doe (Mayor of Vancouver, Canada)
Roger (talk) 18:38, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong Information

Resolved

Hello I am the sister of Keith (Cowboy) Wiggins the article stated that my brother passed away of the aids virus. Keith didn't pass away from aids, he passed away from pneumonia. Mother had test done to check if my brother had the virus all results came back stated that Keith (cowboy) Wiggins didn't have HIV/AIDS.

I checked the article and all I found about his death was the cited and sourced: "Keith "Cowboy" Wiggins died due to his addiction to crack cocaine on September 8, 1989." with the last article edit in September and nothing about AIDS nor HIV anywhere . . . where do you see an issue here exactly? If you have other information that is cited or sourced you may edit the article and add that information along with the < ref > tags, thanks. Marketdiamond (talk) 20:02, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Articles

I'm the grandson of an American Civil War veteran and I've come to know that there are still 300 living children of veterans of the war and I'm just amazed. I've tried to make articles about them but they are not relevant, my question is, once the last of them dies, would that make it relevant? I don't want 300 people dead haha, but just wonder. Thank you. Iowafromiowa (talk) 21:50, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There's a concept on Wikipedia that notability is not inherited. It isn't even clear that any particular Civil War Veteran is notable (clearly many are but not all), so it is even harder to understand why being the child of a veteran would make on notable.
However, we don't make the call. If a number of newspapers decide to write articles about the living descendants, then it might be worthy of an article.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 22:15, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Template question: Duration of event in countdown

I can't set duration for countdown, even though I follow the pattern given in the documentation. See my attempt. Note the timestamp I placed above where I tested the template, which confirms that I got the timezone correct (time as UTC).

Even when I set duration to an enormous amount (100 hrs if counted in microseconds), it still flips straight from "There are 27 seconds left before event starts" to "event has ended" when I preview again a half minute later.

I tried various units after the duration (s, sec, seconds, h, hr, hours) with and without spaces - same result. Is it a bug? --Chriswaterguy talk 23:27, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I took the liberty to add a copied version to the bottom of your sandbox, it appears to work . . . is there a specific item within it you are seeing an error on in the display? Marketdiamond (talk) 23:38, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. btw I'm not all that familiar with UTC but the current time in London is 12:43 AM October 14th. When you, as I did put in for 1 AM 10/14 it works. There might be a bug with the UTC and the format but in real world London (GMT) its Sunday morning as I post this. Marketdiamond (talk) 23:43, 13 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think I explained it badly. It works fine when the event has yet to start (as your test showed), but when I checked just now your test showed "event has ended".
I want it to give the "event has started" message after the start time, during the event itself (i.e. before the duration has expired). It's not working.
(Btw, if you're in London, it's still BST (daylight saving time), not GMT until 28 October 2012.) --Chriswaterguy talk 02:53, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The template made a wrong test of the duration parameter. It looks like [2] has fixed it. It counts seconds. The former code tested whether a page with the name of the duration parameter exists, instead of testing whether the duration parameter is present. I imagine the template coder only tested small durations, and all small numbers have a page in Wikipedia (about the corresponding year such as 60), so testing would have given correct results. The future is hard to predict. There have been suggestions but no agreement. Currently there is an option called Sharebox for logged in users, but it's not enabled by default. It's free and easy to create an account and has many benefits. Everybody can manually copy a url from the browser address bar and post it somewhere. The url for this page is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Help_desk.
Sharebox is a script that reorders your toolbox. It adds new buttons that make it easier to mail, print or share an article on Facebook or another linksharing service. You must have an account to add Sharebox to the sidebar. See User:TheDJ/Sharebox for more information. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:44, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This is a perennial proposal and is unlikely every to be implemented as part of the site software. However, if you create an account, you can install the Sharebox script for you account, which provides a number of "sharing" options.--ukexpat (talk) 01:49, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This involves the death of Mary Vestera (sp) mistress of Prince Rudolph of Austria-Hungary

If the last exhumation of her body proved to be "a (corpse)of 100 years," HOW CAN THAT BE?

She died in 1889? And, the corpse was last exhumed in 1993. The years don't add up.

I know what the pages on her/Mayerling/and Prince Rudolph are trying to say; but this is not 100 years.

See the documentation for archive box - the "auto=yes" option only works with the simplest form of naming for the archive pages. You will have to adapt one of the other examples to make the template work. -- John of Reading (talk) 11:01, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Some subpages were not moved, maybe due to the 100-page limit in Wikipedia:Moving a page#Automating multiple page moves. Special:PrefixIndex/User talk:GreatOrangePumpkin/ shows redirects in italics. Some subpages are not in italics. This means they were not moved. And some subpages are only in italics because they were already redirects before the user rename, and not because they were moved. In addition, you requested deletion of User talk:Tomcat7/Archive 1 and User talk:Tomcat7/Archive 2. If Special:PrefixIndex/User talk:Tomcat7/Archive had shown sequentially numbered redirect pages from User talk:Tomcat7/Archive 1 then I think in [3] would have worked. By the way, "7" in your signature links to the old talk page. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:02, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, stop wasting your time trying to install AWB under Ubuntu because AutoWikiBrowser (often abbreviated AWB) is a semi-automated MediaWiki editor for Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier. (AWB also functions reasonably well under Wine on GNU/Linux but this is not officially supported.)

I'm actually trying to reach Graham87, who wrote me about my edits of the page on Robert C. O'Brien. I am Robert C. O'Brien's daugher, and corrected the page versed on personal knowledge. Thus, I don't have a work I can cite, so I'm not sure how to footnote such a source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sobconly (talkcontribs) 12:51, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can reach Graham87 at User talk:Graham87. I admit it's hard to figure out for a new user because his signature at User talk:Sobconly#Sources doesn't say "talk" like mine. It's subtle but "87" at the end of his signature is a link to User talk:Graham87. See Help:Using talk pages. As his daughter I'm sure you know him best, but our policies Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:No original research do not allow editors to add their personal knowledge about things which have not already been published by a reliable source. If such a source does not exist then the material has to be omitted from the article. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:14, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Citing the ODNB and Complete Peerage

I hope this isn't too minor a question to bring up here, but I frequently cite articles from the online Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, to which I subscribe, and The Complete Peerage, which I have on CD-ROM.

Up till now I've been using the cite book format for both. For example, this is how I recently cited an article in the online ODNB:

• Chibnall, Marjorie (2004). Matilda (1102–1167). Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Retrieved 11 October 2012. cite book: Invalid |ref=harv (help) (subscription required)

However another editor recently changed all my citations for both the ODNB and The Complete Peerage in the article on Edmund de Mortimer, 5th Earl of March to a cite encyclopedia format at this link:

Article on Edmund de Mortimer, 5th Earl of March

These look the same in the Read version of the article (and in this message as well unless one views it in Edit version), and in one sense it probably doesn't make any difference whether I use the cite book format or the cite encyclopedia format, but I've never considered either the ODNB or The Complete Peerage as an encyclopedia, and it somewhat irks me to adopt that format unless it's the standard format for those works on Wikipedia, in which case I'll do it.

Any help with this would be much appreciated. NinaGreen (talk) 20:48, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cite encyclopedia is for any publication that is a compilation. See the template documentation. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:49, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for your help. I looked at the link, and this seems to be applicable:
Despite its name, Cite encyclopedia is actually used for citing articles in any sort of edited collection. This can include works such as encyclopedias and dictionaries, but more generally any book or book series containing individual sections or chapters written by various authors, and put together by one or more editors.
This description doesn't fit The Complete Peerage, so it seems Cite book would still work best there. It fits the ODNB somewhat better in that all the articles are written by different authors, but it doesn't seem to offer much advantage over Cite book because there are no overall general editors who need to be cited, so I think it's a toss-up, and one could use either Cite book or Cite encyclopedia for the ODNB.
I did learn from looking at this link that Cite encyclopedia is really useful in citing articles by individual authors in a book published under the name of an overall editor, and will tuck that away for future reference. Thanks again. NinaGreen (talk) 22:49, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I was just reading over the article about John D. Rockefeller, Sr. The article states his mother was Baptist. According to National Geographic, and an interview with the Rockefeller family, they state that Eliza's religion was Puritan. But I don't know how to go about getting the article fixed. In U.S. religious discourse, "puritan" is an adjective rather than a religious affiliation. You are reading far too much into the use of that word, especially in describing a family once famous for their Baptist faith. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:32, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agree, puritan was used as an adjective, as in puritanical. By the time of Mrs. R., there were no basically no more religious Puritans (captol "P") in the US, because there was no establsihed Church to "purify."— Preceding unsigned comment added by Alanscottwalker (talkcontribs)
Also, a careful reading of the article Baptists indicates clearly that the Baptist movement originated with the Puritan and English Separatist movements, so modern Baptists are among the descendants of Puritans anyways. Though, the sentiment is correct that there is no "Puritan Church" in the modern world. However, John D. Rockefeller Sr. may have, being born in 1839, been old enough that the terms were used semi-intechangably. That is, while there were clearly Baptists at that time, there may have also been Puritans, or the terms may have been used alongside each other. --Jayron32 19:52, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Citation style

If I have two sentences based on the same page of a source, should a citation be given at the end of both sentences or only at the end of the second one? The sentences are like this

It was proven that blah blah.[1]: 333  The authors also showed that blah blah.[1]: 333

1. ^ a b [1]

Both are referencing the same page of a paper. Should the first cite be kept or removed? -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 12:52, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I guess there is no specific rule for this. If the sentences are short, give it at the end of the second sentence. If the sentences are too long, you can give it at the end of both sentences. --Anbu121 (talk me) 12:55, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would advice you to keep both references, because editors later can split the sentences, or remove the last one and then the whole reference gets lost. Thanks GB Fan - I wanted to be sure I was in the right place before putting everything up.

The Wiki articles that cite my website are:

All of these articles say Martie Duncan (a living person, she was a contestant on the show) gave her age as 50.

The exact statement in Zin's blog post was: "...she finally says this is the culmination of 50 years! Wow! She finally gave her age!" that is not the same thing. It is an indirect quote followed by a snarky intepretation.

The citation to my website is A Just Recompense - Food Network Star 2012: Episode 10 – “Pilot Greenlights” - http://sloopie72.wordpress.com/2012/07/16/food-network-star-2012-episode-10-pilot-greenlights/

My blog is just a personal Wordpress blog, and though I go to some efforts to make sure my posts and Zin Kenter's posts (including the one cited) are accurate, I have from time to time made mistakes (I incorporate corrections immediately when notified). It's self-published; there is no editor, no board, no oversight at all, so I could actually say anything I wanted within the bounds of slander, which makes it inherently unreliable.

So it should not be used as a source by anyone. I will delete the post if you will not delete the reference. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sloopie72 (talkcontribs) 21:36, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Inconsistent Information

In the "Turkey" page, percentage of ethnic groups in Turkey are shown wrong. I tried to fix it by using references from Turkey but it is still not changed. And because of that, the information in the page "Turkey"(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkey) and "Turkiye"(http://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Türkiye) is inconsistent for the percentage of ethnic groups in Turkey, where the page "Turkiye" has the right percentage. Please help me to solve this problem and to change the information not to inform people in wrong way. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bozdogan35 (talkcontribs) 01:35, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The English and Turkish Wikipedia are edited independently. They don't have to use the same sources and display the same information. Read Talk:Turkey#Percentages of ethnic groups in Turkey before doing anything. I strongly suspect your suggested change is controversial so post it to Talk:Turkey for discussion if it isn't already there. See Help:Using talk pages. Be specific and give a reliable source. If your source disagrees with [4] in The World Factbook then explain why you think your source should be preferred. The English Wikipedia usually prefers English sources, and there is scepticism about Turkish numbers. The Turkish government has a political interest in under-reporting the number of Kurds in Turkey. Block/Restrict edits by IP address

I've noticed from the talk page that a large number of edits have been made by our school IP address. Who is the best person to talk to about permanently restricting edits for our IP address (203.82.100.214). This IP has been temporarily banned previously, but the ideal would be to permanently ban edits from this IP address, which is the school proxy server.

Totdave (talk) 03:59, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Per Wikipedia:Blocking IP addresses, we generally don't permanently block IP addresses. Also, it isn't policy to block any IP addresses just on the potential that they may act up. It is fairly quiet now, with only 5 total edits since the most recent block expired. If it gets to be a problem, you can report it at WP:AIV, but I don't see anything currently happening from that IP address that would lead me to believe it needs to be blocked presently. --Jayron32 04:14, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Why not educate your students as to the proper way to contribute to Wikipedia rather than suggesting that the school's IP address be blocked? This looks like the ideal opportunity for a school project.--ukexpat (talk) 13:46, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Who knows

See? You look up help page and think well, this is it. I can send the company a letter about the issues, but no....I did look up what said help, so please don't let me know I've screwed up yet again. SEPARATE the real help from the edit help.

I had a message saying that I changed facts about cholera. I changed nothing so I don't want to look at five pages of things done wrong. Keep trying and you'll get it straight. However, this seems as if this could be an issue, since the readers are the ones who make the changes. Oh, hey, if you stopped the non-qualifing readers from changing things then I would not be falsely accused, either. 2 birds, one freaking stone!!!!!! I know nothing of cholera so unless someone was joking I made not changes. What is this page even about? Look up...look down. I sure as shit don't know how to do this.

Help uploading an image to this page: The Price for Peace by Brayden Summerfield

Hello my friends created a page about my book i have had published and its now selling around the world and we are unable to upload an image could you please help us

thanks Brayden --Brayden Summerfield (talk) 09:28, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You cannot yet upload images because your account is not yet confirmed. Since a book's cover is invariably copyrighted, you will not be able to upload it to Wikimedia Commons as a free image, so you will either have to request it at Files for upload or wait until you meed the autoconfirmed criteria. However, since the book does not appear to meet either our general inclusion guideline or the specific inclusion criteria for books, I am afraid that I have proposed the article for deletion. I also can't see any problem with the flags (Korean or otherwise) on any of the above pages. There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with either the flag template and its deritives or the image files of the flags you mention. What exactly are you seeing? Yunshui  11:49, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The image is not displaying properly. KOR should show as  South Korea with the flag, but I see just a grey bar. The template uses an image size of 22x20px to show File:Flag of South Korea.svg. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 11:47, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am seeing the same thing as Deor in that the South Korea flag is not displaying properly. Also, the Chile flag is the same way when I look at the 2012 Summer Olympics page, which I find odd as all the other flags show up just fine. SassyLilNugget (talk) 15:27, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried this on a couple of different browsers, same result. Whatever this is, it's new: I regularly look at the international sports results but haven't seen this before. Vertical text in Tables

Hi, i wanted to know if it's possible to change the "Glava" text to vertical in the case of these tables i'm making for an article:

Name(s) / variants Notes Film appearances Game appearances
G
l
a
v
a
Glava-Begunats None Resident Evil 6
Glava-Dim
Glava-Sluz
Glava-Smech

This would increase readability and i wouldn't need tonnes of new sections in the article that way. Someone else suggested images but i want to avoid that for being time consuming, troublesome, and affecting load times. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 10:59, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

According to this help page, vertical text alignment support in web browsers is minimal, and it seems like images is the only way to do it. –– Anonymouse321 (talkcontribs) 11:13, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Darn...Is there a guide to this or do i just upload images created in Microsoft paint? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 11:17, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't do it because it could potentially result in an accessibility problem. - Purplewowies (talk) 12:17, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
How would you do it? I considered putting the identifier of the species on the top but it doesn't look too appealing. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 16:07, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly would just do this:
Name(s) / variants Notes Film appearances Game appearances
Glava Glava-Begunats None Resident Evil 6
Glava-Dim
Glava-Sluz
Glava-Smech
If you still feel you need to use images, you might want to read these first: Wikipedia:ACCESS#Images, Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Accessibility/Data tables tutorial#Images and color (there's another page I thought was pertinent, but I can't remember/find it). - Purplewowies (talk) 19:01, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also, for a place to make the image, I would create it with WordArt in a Microsoft Office application, and save the WordArt as a picture. One of the reasons I think it is bad to use images as text for accessibility reasons is that the text in the image cannot be customized through browser settings or CSS. - Purplewowies (talk) 19:09, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think i'll just use the column with the species name in that case. I suppose it doesn't look too bad. Thanks for the work you put in Jenova20 (email) 19:40, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How can I get a "watchlist"-type display for an article's history? A list that uses the "(diff | hist)" or "(last}" format instead of the classic radio buttons. The Reformation

In reading the material on the Reformation I have noted several errors of content. For example, the author confuses the distinction between the Puritans and Pilgrims in Massachusetts. These two groups had different origins and sentiments regarding the reform movement in England and only came together after establishing separate colonies in Massachusetts in the early 17th century. I have researched this in preparation for a recent book on the history of the West Parish in Haverhill, MA.

And the writing of the entire Reformation article is ambiguous to the point of confusion in several cases. I could re-write many sentences easily to remove ambiguities. Having written a textbook in philosophy I have some experiences in expressing ideas with clarity and precision. This article needs work. How might I go about revising/improving this entry?

Well, I would first like to say welcome and point out that Wikipedia is a collaborative effort. There is no one single author on a topic, anyone can edit them. You can started by clicking the "Edit" tab at the top of the page and editing the article. Its that easy! However, there are some basic rules here. We like to have reliable sources so that other editors can verify what you say is true. Articles you create should be notable. Wikipedia has a ton of resources for new editors, if you have any super newbie questions about what to do, you can also ask at The Teahouse. I would like to encourage you to be bold and make any of the edits you think need to be corrected and you can leave a note on the articles talk page or write in your edit summary about what you are doing. Don't feel too bad if someone reverts your edit, it happens all the time. Just back up what you are saying with sources and work it out with other editors. Also, if you are going to make continued edits, I would encourage you to create an account. It makes your edits easier to attribute and if anyone has a question for you, you would have your own little place to let them leave it. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask me on my talk page. Livewireo (talk) 17:38, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you expect to make more than one or two edits, I recommend you to register an account before you start. Then it will be easier to see which edits are yours (and, rightly or wrongly, your edits will be treated with more respect by other editors). Maproom (talk) 19:23, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Multi-article RfC

I'm engaged in a discussion on the Greece Talk page as to whether the Greek economic crisis should be mentioned in the article lead. I've suggested an RfC on the question and am trying to agree the terms of the question with the other editors. One of the editors wants to broaden the question to say, in effect, if it's mentioned in the article lead of one of the so-called PIIGS countries it should be mentioned in all of them i.e. a kind of centralized mult-article RfC. Does anyone now if that's possible, how it can be done or where to go to get guidance on how it might be done. DeCausa (talk) 19:35, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That smacks of recentism and undue weight. How significant is the current event in the context of the thousands of years of history of Greece - or the other countries. It's just a single ripple in the timeline. Roger (talk) 20:15, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Walter Winterbottom

The information on Sir Walter Winterbottom has some inaccurate and misleading statements and substantial omissions which I would like to ammend. I am his daughter and my husband, Graham Morse, has just written the first biography of Sir Walter Winterbottom, titled the Father of Modern English Footabll' which will be published by James Blake in March 2013.

We would like to substantially revise the entry and would like to know if we can cite Graham Morse's book now? Appreciate your help. GRAHAMMMORSE (talk) 21:06, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, only publicly-available sources may be use as citations in Wikipedia. It may be possible to use the book as a source once it is published, depending upon the reliability (as defined by Wikipedia) of the publisher. Wikipedia strongly discourages editing of articles by individuals who have a close relationship or interest in the subject of the article, see the conflicts of interest policy. It's particularly inadvisable to try to do so when you are not an experienced Wikipedia editor, since it is hard enough to have the objectivity needed to avoid policy violations when you have a conflict of interest and you know all the pitfalls. If there are some particular inaccuracies which you would like addressed, you might raise them at Wikipedia:Editor assistance/Requests but be sure to point out that you are not attempting to make the changes yourself due to your conflict of interest. Regards, TransporterMan (TALK) 21:19, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You may remove any information which is not referenced from the article; but if you want to make any other changes, (including removing information which appears to be referenced to a reliable source) you should suggest them on the article's talk page, rather than editing the article yourself, because of your conflict of interest. Once the book is published, facts cited to the book may be added to the article, but again it would be best if you did not do so yourself, but asked others to do so, via the talk page.
One other point: in order to be able to attribute contributions correctly for licensing purposes, Wikipedia does not allow people to share accounts. The fact that you identify yourself as the wife of Graham Morse but are using an account in his name suggests to me that you may be intending to do this: please create a separate account for yourself. --ColinFine (talk) 22:38, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia article on homosexuality and the Anglican Church of Canada

In your article on homosexuality and the Anglican Church of Canada saw no reference to the break-away Anglican Network of Canada which is growing across Canada, keeps its Anglican identity, affirms traditional marriage, and has established alliances with Anglicans outside of North America who also affirm traditional marriage. This important segment of the Anglican church in Canada deserves to be identified in a Wikipedia article on homosexuality and the Anglican Church of Canada. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.27.141.229 (talkcontribs)

If you have references to independent reliable sources which talk about the Network, you are welcome to add the information to the article, referencing these sources. A mere assertion that this splinter group is "important" does not signify, if you cannot provide some sources to back up the assertion. If you feel undue weight is being given to certain items or issues in the article, then Template:Undue may be what you are looking for. Gandalf61 (talk) 08:00, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not so free

I have a problem to report. Wikipedia is too crambed with rules. EITHER ITS FREE OR ITS NOT!

My edits were neither vandalism or clutter and I'd appreciate if Wikipedia steered toward a fun, interactive site again.

It is free in that it is possible for editors to delete sections of content without explanation, as you did at Heathers. It is also free in that it allows other editors to restore that content. Maproom (talk) 08:44, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And in fact your edits have been consistently unhelpful, often ill-spelled and pointless. This is a reference work, not an interactive game. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:07, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Who's George Ballantyne then? —Tamfang (talk) 09:07, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We have millions of articles. Please give the exact title or URL of pages. After a search I guess the post is about List of Wakefield Trinity Wildcats players#Other Players 1970s which says "circa-1970…78". Do you have a published reliable source for 1968? Good Morning,

I had edited a submission entry about the story of my sister Catherine O'Leary who suffers from Locked in Syndrome which was online at Locked-in syndrome#Catherine O'Leary . I didn't write the original story however there were some errors on this which I needed to correct , as there was wrong information being displayed and for legal reasons had to be changed.

Upon doing this a few days ago, the entire paragraph was removed, which I find completely unfair. and im not sure how to proceed.

Many thanks,

Patrick — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.45.217.208 (talk) 09:07, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The trouble is that we have no way of knowing that Catherine O'Leary even exists, without reference to some reliable source such as a newspaper; that's why the passage was removed as "unsourced". We also prefer that you not write on matters to which you're intimately connected. —Tamfang (talk) 09:20, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thats fine; but there is a wealth of newspaper articles available online by doing a quick google search, can list a few: http://www.sundaymercury.net/news/midlands-news/2012/09/02/birmingham-mum-of-locked-in-girl-catherine-o-leary-says-her-daughter-wants-to-live-66331-31745618/

It would be great if this could be relisted, as I think it is great to have the information available — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.45.217.208 (talk) 09:28, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Best bet is to mention those sources in the talk page of the article. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:06, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help with infobox

Hello,

in Russian Empire, in the infobox after "February Revolution", why are there two times the year "1917"? I could not find the error... Regards.--Tomcat (7) 09:14, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The error was that years had been included in the parameters for date_start and date_end, but Template:Infobox former country says they're not needed. They get picked up from year_start and year_end. I've fixed it. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:21, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguating two books with identical title

There exist the page Fermat's Last Theorem (book), with a redirect from Fermat's enigma. This article is about a Simon Singh book, but someone has pointed out there exists another book of identical title. Obviously the title has been disambiguated from the actual theory fairly successfully, but I'm not clear on the usual format for Disambiguating two books with the same title. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (books)#Standard disambiguation. Scarce2 (talk) 09:59, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Right, so Fermat's Last Theorem (Singh book), makes sense. Thanks. 217.41.84.185 (talk) 10:06, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
