This is a List of Formula One broadcasters and 'World Feed' producers. Formula One, the highest level of circuit racing defined by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, motor sport's world governing body, can be seen live or tape delayed on television in almost every country and territory around the world.

It attracts one of the largest global TV audiences after the Football World Cup and the Olympic Games, with a total global audience of 527 million people for the 2010 race season.[1]

TV broadcasters all take what is known as the 'World Feed', which since 2007 has been produced by FOM (Formula One Management), for almost every round of the World Championship. Every race is produced in 16:9 widescreen.

Previously, a 'host broadcaster' from each nation produced the World Feed for their home race, for example TF1 for the French Grand Prix. This led to a two-tier system which was unpopular with viewers due to local broadcasters focusing heavily on local teams and drivers, whilst missing key moments.

For the 2012 season, the World Feed is produced by FOM for every race apart from the Monaco Grand Prix, produced by Télé Monte Carlo.

Alongside the main World Feed, FOM also produce a Pit-lane channel, showing shots from the pitlane and alternative camera angles, along with detailed weather and tyre information, and extra team radio. FOM Also produce a 5 onboard channels (A "Master" on-board channel and 4 additional on-board channels), showing live video from cameras installed the drivers' cars. The channels switch between different cars throughout the session. FOM also make available a "Driver tracker" channel, showing live positions of all the cars on the track during a session, as well as a timing screen showing live lap-times and circuit sector information.

Currently, brodcasters offering coverage of these extra, FOM-produced channels include Sky Sport in Germany and Sky Sports F1 in the United Kingdom, and also BBC in the United Kingdom, whenever the latter are showing the race live. Out of the 5 onboard channels, the BBC only shows the Master onboard channel to its viewers, whereas Sky Sports F1 makes all 5 onboard channels available. The Pitlane, Driver Tracker and Live Timing channels are available to both Sky and BBC viewers in the United Kingdom, whenever the races are being broadcast live by those broadcasters.

For the 2011 season Formula One Management released a High Definition feed to broadcasters for the first time.

New TV deal in the United Kingdom from 2012

In 2011, Sky Sports signed a 7-year deal with the BBC to show live Formula 1 in the United Kingdom for the first time. The deal which runs between 2012 and 2018 will see Sky Sports show live coverage of every session of the season on their own F1 dedicated channel, Sky Sports F1.[2] Sky Sports F1 will show all races and qualifying sessions live without the interruption of adverts.[3]

The BBC will continue to show live coverage of half of the races in the season. In 2012, they will show live coverage from China, Spain, Monaco, Europe, Britain, Belgium, Singapore, Korea, Abu Dhabi and Brazil.[4] They will also show live coverage of practice and qualifying sessions from those races.[5]

For the races that the BBC don't show live, they will show "extended highlights" of the race just a few hours after it has been broadcast.[6] The BBC Radio 5 Live coverage will be unaffected.

Australian broadcast

Despite promising to broadcast all Formula One races in 2012 live on their digital station One, Network Ten dropped their high-definition coverage following the Chinese Grand Prix, replacing the slot with movies, with live F1 coverage returning to the their primary station Network Ten, in standard definition.

Ten also delayed broadcast of races in Western Australia and South Australia.

This move angered fans across the country, who threatened to boycott viewing, with a "Boycott Ten Sport" fanpage set up.

As a result, prior to the Spanish Grand Prix, Ten re-instated live F1 coverage in Western Australia and South Australia on One, meaning all states and territories will continue to receive live coverage either on One or Network Ten.

United States broadcast

On October 14, 2012, NBC Sports Group signed a 4-year deal with Formula One to acquire the exclusive United States media rights to broadcast the sport. The deal will run through the 2013 Formula One season to the 2016 Formula One season. The Formula One United States media rights were previously owned by cable channel Speed for 17 years. According to the Associated Press, a spokesperson from Fox Sports (parent company of Speed) said that they had been out-bid by another network during contract negotiations. NBC said that the deal will provide over 100 hours of programming across NBC and its cable channel NBC Sports Network. Four races will be broadcast on NBC. These four races are (as of the 2013 Formula One season), the Canadian Grand Prix, and the final three races of the season. The other 15 races will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network. However, there could be scheduling conflicts. NBC Sports Network also broadcasts the IndyCar Series, which could result in the races being broadcast on NBC Sports Group's live-stream platform. NBC has also said that NBC Sports Network will also broadcast all practice and qualifying sessions and will most likely have a pit reporter at every race and have a booth in the United States. It will also use the world feed produced by FOM.[7]

  • Below are the previous World Feed Producers for Grands Prix from 1990 until 2011.
  • Between 1997 and 1999 the Brazilian GP World Feed was produced by FOM. What was shown was a reduced version of the F1 Digital+ main feed, mainly lacking onboard angles and without the pay per view graphics. GloboTV continued to produce an alternative National Feed for Brazilian viewers.
  • In 2001 and 2002 the US Grand Prix was broadcast locally by ABC. However, they did not ever produce the World Feed.
  • In 1991, the French GP was broadcast in France by La Cinq, which held rights for F1.
