    Redirect page reconverted into article

Heya, was looking for a little guidance on this redirect: Neon Knome. Several weeks back I nominated the article for deletion because it was entirely original research, poorly written, contained trivia, and any notable information it did impart could easily be incorporated into the parent article at: The Problem Solverz. The AfD passed and the article was turned into a redirect to the parent article. Shortly thereafter, an editor at IP 173.11.226.201 restored the disputed page (with glaring flaws and all) with no explanation. I reverted that edit and made it a redirect again. The IP user restored the article a second time. Another user turned it back into a redirect. Then an IP editor at 50.8.27.98 (who I believe to either be the same editor, or working in tandem with them, based on how closely their biases and edit histories intersect) restored the flawed article. I just want to be sure that my efforts to keep the redirect aren't misguided. I believe these IP editors are fans of the show and seem to have a heavy bias to keep any and all information about the show and its creators, rather than to ensure the quality of the articles. Any assistance is appreciated. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 00:16, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Consider requesting the page be protected at WP:RFPP. Don't engage in an edit war. RudolfRed (talk) 00:27, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If there was consensus to delete and redirect the article, then shouldn't the anons be warned for edits that violate consensus, as well as having the article page-protected? Robert McClenon (talk) 00:54, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is where I get a little confused about consensus. I nominated the page for deletion because it didn't meet encyclopedic standards. Nobody objected. Is that consensus? But then two editors (theoretically) at these IPs want to restore the junk article. Is that consensus? Cyphoidbomb (talk) 03:17, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On further checking, IP address 173.11.226.201 has a LONG history of disruptive edits and has repeatedly been warned and sometimes blocked. I've requested administrator intervention. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:46, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the assist. I piggybacked a mention of 50.8.27.98's activities onto the AIV report. Among other unhelpful contributions, here they are submitting the same copypasta--first one IP does, then after I reverted it for unsourced original research, the other IP resubmitted it. Example from 173.11.226.201 and example from 50.8.27.98. The edit was eventually reverted by another editor. Per RudolfoRed's suggestion, I submitted a request for page protection. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 03:17, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It might be worthwile reporting the two IPs as possible sockpuppets too. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:32, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New articles and submission for entries

    Hi,

I am doing a project for a grad Public History class and we need to create a wiki article for a site that doesn't have one yet. I chose the Cockayne Farm Preservation Project. I used sandbox to do most of the writing/coding then submitted it to somewhere(?) Then it said about putting it on something called talk and then talk:articlesofcreation for Cockayne Farm Preservation Project. After doing this, I found another part that let me put my writing/coding in and the page appears to be active. My question is, did I just do a bunch of things wrong, or did I make my (and the editors) lives more complicated?

Thanks. John — Preceding unsigned comment added by JohnHospitaller (talkcontribs) 00:56, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your article is at Cockayne Farm Preservation Project. I didn't read it through but I see that there is still some work to be done to it. First, we don't generally put external links (those going to off-Wikipedia web sites) in the text of the article. Those are generally put in an external links section at the bottom. Second, articles don't have "Conclusion" sections. Articles aren't term papers where you have to sum up your arguments. Articles should be devoid of personal opinion. See WP:NPOV about that. I do appreciate that you have references though! Dismas|(talk) 01:19, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Submit objection on WIkipage Indosat

    Dear Wikipedia Admin,

Herewith we submit objection to a page that related to our company information, namely Indosat. The information is incorrect and repeatedly being updated by anonymous person to be misslead. We have been updating it frequently but still being edited by this person.

Could you kindly help me on this matter? To assure that the information is being correct and useful for anyone who lookung for Indosat information in Wikipedia.

The article is Indosat. The best place to discuss your problem is on the article's talk page. You say "We have been updating it frequently", but User:Pras2312 has never edited the page at all. In any case, anyone associated with Indosat should read Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest before editing the Indosat article. Maproom (talk) 11:36, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Correction of article name

    To Whom it May Concern

    The Wikipedia Team,

It is to inform you that there is an article named as Teenda an Wikipedia, but the actual name covering a large area is Chowki Tinda. Tinda is a village in union council Chowki Tinda. Other villages include Kalah, Athroin, Panakha and Kakanni. The name may please be corrected. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yasiraltafhotmail (talkcontribs) 08:35, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Chowki Tinda currently redirects people to Teenda. Are you saying this should be the other way around? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 14:45, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Edit statistics on ice hockey player wiki page

I am interested in updating my personal Wiki page that has been created for me. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brad_Leeb)

I would like the page to represent my current ice hockey statistics, as the current Career Statistics have not been updated since 2008-2009. I do not know how to update this section. I see that the stats are from HockeyDB.com, but I can't figure out a simple way to update/copy paste code to update my this section.

Can someone please help? Or please update for me?

    Any info is appreciated.

    Thanks. Bradmleeb (talk) 11:26, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for not editing the article itself – it is best that you avoid doing this as you have a conflict of interest. Please give you current statistics, and any other changes you would like made, on the article's talk page so that other editors can edit the article. If possible, please include references to reliable published sources where the information can be verified. Maproom (talk) 11:46, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(ec)The best place for you to address your concerns would be Talk:Brad Leeb where neutral editors can evaluate the information and edit the article accordingly.
Before you, or anyone representing or associated with you, do any editing please read WP:Autobiography and WP:Conflict of interest. The article is not your "personal wiki page", it is Wikipedia's article about you as a notable subject. It was not created for you and you do not have any special rights regarding its content - see WP:OWN and WP:NPOV. Your interests are however protected by Wikipedia's very strict policies about biograpies of living people. -- Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 11:59, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have updated the statistics, by copying from http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=28823. I don't know what any of them mean. I observe that the +/- column has not been copied to the Wikipedia article. Maproom (talk) 15:19, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Template Help

I am finding dozens and dozens of pages of templates but not a general page that explains how to work with templates, what they are, when they should be used, how to use the code, where to put it. When I look at Template:Help, it's a template for a Help page, not a page trying to help people work with templates. I just need to know how to use one specific template in order to do a category deletion request but it's not a simple tag I can paste in, it's a template and they seem much more complicated. There should be a guide explaining what they are, why they are used and how to choose the right template from the hundreds listed in the category Templates. 69.125.134.86 (talk) 14:34, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Instead of looking at Template:Help, look at Help:Template. Looie496 (talk) 14:42, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

     Done -- John of Reading (talk) 15:17, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Quite recently {{cite encyclopedia}} has had this test enabled: Help:CS1 errors#Unknown parameter#|????= ignored the trouble is that it has introduced a problem in dozens of wrapper templates that call {{cite encyclopedia}}. For example {{cite EB1911}} which is transluded into about 15,000 articles.

The problem is that to protect the wrapper template from setting null value parameters that for example break things like author=name when an empty last= parameter is also passed into {{cite encyclopedia}}. The code for passing in parameters in wrapper templates like {{cite EB1911}} is

    |{{#if:{{{last|}}} |last |HIDE_PARAMETER}}={{{last|}}}
    |{{#if:{{{author |}}} |author |HIDE_PARAMETER}}={{{author|}}}

This means that a hidden parameter is deliberately set to protect a valid parameter being set with an empty value. Now there are several ways this can be fixed easily, but while it is discussed it would probably be a good idea to roll back the alteration to CS1 errors which has made this error appear in tens of 1000s of pages.

    -- PBS (talk) 14:50, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    What does HIDE_PARAMETER do? --  Gadget850 talk 14:57, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If it is being used to not inject a blank field, then it is no longer needed with the Lua module. All you need is:
    |{{{last}}}={{{last|}}}
The Lua module will totally ignore any parameters without a value. --  Gadget850 talk 14:59, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    I think you mean:
    |last={{{last|}}}

    Right. --  Gadget850 talk 16:05, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Can you point to any examples where you see this error message with that template? I don't see why it should ever occur. Unknown parameters are ignored if their content is empty, which seems to be the case for the usage shown. According to the CatScan tool there are only 119 pages using {{Cite EB1911}} in Category:Pages with citations using unsupported parameters, and a quick perusal of the first 10 seemed to confirm that these were coincidental. The CS1 error was being reported by some other citation on the same page and not related to the use of {{Cite EB1911}}. Dragons flight (talk) 15:15, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information. I came across it for the first time in this page Christian Schussele for the template {{Cite ODNB}}.
    As in
Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (online ed.). Oxford University Press. {{cite encyclopedia}}: Missing or empty |title= (help) (Subscription or UK public library membership required.)
I'll check the code and see if it is set to anything other than empty.
    -- PBS (talk) 15:24, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Review/assist new article!

Hi, I'm new to Wikipedia and I'm trying to write the following article: User:Bblears/Madeleine Riffaud

I was wondering whether anybody could help me produce this? I feel ethically bound to make it, yet I do not speak French, and most of the sources are French.

Particularly - should I translate the titles of her works (poetry anthologies, books, publications) into English or post the French titles? --Bblears (talk) 15:01, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I got you an infobox. It's not much but I have a lot of other side projects i'm working on. Good luck with your article, it looks very interesting! Jenova20 (email) 15:22, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If the works' titles were in French, you should use those French-language titles. Translating them would be confusing, and make the sources harder to find. Incidentally — your article looks very good, far better than most editors' first articles. Maproom (talk) 15:25, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'm sort of at a dead end now, I've put in all the information that I know, but without a French contributor my knowledge is very limited. And I am guessing that the sources are not sufficient. Bblears (talk) 15:47, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    I'll fix the Bare URL references. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 15:57, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have page numbers for the book reference? Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 16:03, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
One of the web references is dead - it might be due to a typo. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 16:09, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry Roger, the quote from that article is shown here www.12ozprophet.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-94477.html but I don't suppose I can use that. I'll look for additional sources. Bblears (talk) 17:18, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article looks pretty good to me. Rather than leaving the draft in userspace at AfC, is there any reason why she shouldn't go ahead and create the article in mainspace and then request assistance from someone who knows French? Robert McClenon (talk) 18:15, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I support Robert McClenon's suggestion. I'ld move it myself, but it's past my bedtime. Maproom (talk) 23:10, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Since I'm on the United States East Coast, I took up my own suggestion and copied the article into mainspace. Robert McClenon (talk) 00:54, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Are you saying that you did a copy and paste to mainspace, rather than moving the draft from Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Madeleine Riffaud and maintaining the attribution of the previous edits. Are you sure that you intended to do that, Robert? - David Biddulph (talk) 01:15, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    I've requested a history merge. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:02, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Because it was done as a copy/paste move the AfC Project template has not been placed on the Talk page - this needs to be fixed. AfC has specific procedures for moving drafts to mainspace which includes the automagical addition of the AfC template and categorisation. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:30, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I'm honoured! Hopefully I can find a French person to improve the article now. Bblears (talk) 07:31, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think the easiest way might be to ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject France. Seems likely a few of those contributors can understand French and English. Good luck! Jenova20 (email) 08:29, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is no way to prevent people from editing an article provided they have reliable sources to back up their edits. If you discuss desired changes on the associated talk page, and provide reliable published source, you may be able to convince the other editors of your proposed changes. Since this is a BLP (Biography of a Living Person) unsourced material will be immediately removed if challenged. Please be cautious in making changes to this article since you are seen as having a conflict of interest. RJFJR (talk) 19:48, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
First, you should familiarize yourself with Wikipedia guidelines at WP: Biographies of living persons. Then as RJFJR suggests, you can discuss changes on the talkpage of the article you are concerned about. If that fails, and the article violates WP:BLP standards, you can report the problem at WP: Biographies of living persons/noticeboard. Textorus (talk) 04:17, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Making a work-in-progress copy of a page

Is it permissible to make a copy of an article to my userspace to work on it and then merge it back into the main article after I'm done? I'm wanting to work on expanding an existing (stub) article, but I'm not wanting to leave the mainspace article in a half finished state while I work. If it is permissible, what is the proper process? Grandmartin11 (talk) 19:38, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Making a copy in userspace is fine. I'm not sure there is any particular procedure to follow. (You may want to put a message at the top of your userspace copy describing what you are doing in case someone finds it. You may also want to remove maintenance tags from your copy since they may add it to categories.) Ask to have your user copy deleted when you are done. RJFJR (talk) 19:44, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    damaged article on Pete Hautman

I am the author Pete Hautman, the subject of the Wikipedia article on "Pete Hautman" Pete Hautman. Recently, the (formerly accurate) article was heavily edited, and there are now several problems with it including

    1) It says I have written some books that I did not write. (i.e. I am not the author of "The Walking Dead!") 2) Nearly all of the publication dates of the listed books are wildly (and apparently deliberately) inaccurate (i.e. one of my books is listed as being written in 2025) 3) Only a dozen of my 28 published novels are mentioned, with my more popular novels (including some that have their own Wikipedia articles) omitted. 4) The grammar has been altered, and not for the good--it now reads as if written by an eighth-grader.

The alterations do not appear to be vicious or damaging, but they are bewildering and not at all useful to any reader. It looks as if some kid got in there and started screwing around with the article just for fun.

I don't know if it's appropriate for me to attempt to edit a page about myself, so I'm starting here at the help desk. Is there anything I can do to help correct this damaged article?

    Thank you!

Thank you for not editing the article yourself, which would have violated the conflict of interest and autobiography policies. If there are any other errors, you can identify them on the article talk page, preferably with links to reliable sources, such as book catalogs. Which of your books should be listed is, as mentioned above, a question of which of your books are considered notable. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:01, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"List of characters" articles and other spin-off articles

Are there established guidelines for "List of characters" articles? When are they appropriate, and when should they be avoided? What about other spin-off articles like "List of episodes," "Mythology of," etc.? - ClaireJV (talk) 20:16, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I thought there would be something in WP:MOSFICT, but it only mentions characters in passing. I don't know where else to look. Sorry. --ColinFine (talk) 23:07, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think it all boils down to user experience. For example, NCIS (TV series) would be way too long if it contained the episode lists and list of characters. But, for a series that only lasted one season or just a few episodes, it would probably be inappropriate to break out the episode and character lists into separate articles. Perhaps try clearing your cache and see if that has any effect. Sir Rcsprinter, Bt (yak) @ 21:26, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I tested it and bypassing the browser cache made it work for me. Let us know whether that resolves your issues with the script. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 21:33, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've already tried clearing the cache, and it doesn't help. Alphius (talk) 22:04, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What browser are you using? The documentation says that it won't work at all with Google Chrome and there may be problems with Internet Explorer and Firefox (though it works fine in Firefox for me). Are you aware that in order for the script to work, you have to click edit on a page, then click preview, and only then click the "Page size" link?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:57, 29 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It says that trying to do it without installing it might have problems in certain browsers, but doesn't say anything like that for the installed version. I didn't know you had to edit and preview first, but even after trying that, it still hasn't worked for me. Alphius (talk) 00:07, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes, you're right, that's for the uninstalled application. However, there's some indication on the talk page that, regardless, it may not run in some versions of IE. If you're using it it, I'd try it with something else.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:19, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm using Chrome. I guess I can try another browser and see if it works, then. 129.93.5.133 (talk) 00:58, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oops. I apparently wasn't logged in when I left that comment. I'm sure most of the edits on that IP address aren't mine, because I'm on a shared IP address. Anyway, I am positive I was logged in when I tried to get the JavaScript to work. I just tried Firefox and Internet Explorer, too, and it didn't work for me in those, either. Alphius (talk) 01:04, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

() Alphius, instead of the {subst:js... method, try puting the line

    importScript('User:Dr pda/prosesize.js'); //User:Dr pda/prosesize.js

in your vector.js (and of course, clearing the cache again). It works for me (IE8).

@Fuhghettaboutit: you do not have to enter edit mode and preview to use it. Just load the page you want and click the tool. --Stfg (talk) 21:29, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! That worked! Alphius (talk) 17:07, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The tv series, in 1960-70 period. There was an island where the people greeted each other saying "we are not thieves".

There was a captain who traveled with his yacht in the Pacific or Indian Ocean, He came to an island where he noticed that the people of the island were greeting each other "We are not thieves"..He was very curious about why the people were greeting each other this way. This is what he found out: In the 18th or early 19th Century, these men and women were descendant of people who were branded as convicts and condemned by the British Government for transport to New South Wales, Australia., Somehow they either survived a violent storm or commandeered the ship they were transported, came upon an island and survived.. Their crimes were petty crimes like stealing shirts, embroidery or just a few pennies. They did not consider themselves as thieves so they were greeting each other by saying "we are not thieves". This sort of greeting persisted. They survived and married and multiplied., But the fear of being discovered and be transported to New South Wales has stayed with them. The leaders of the group prevented any escape from the island lest those who escape may reveal the location of the island, subject being rediscovered and condemned again for transport to New South Wales.. Only the leaders had the knowledge of the use of a sextant and other navigation instruments.. They kept the knowledge of use of those instruments very secrect. They multiplied, they built houses and other dwellings in the architectural models of the old England.. Their language was old English. When the captain arrived with his yacht, they did not allow him to leave the island for the same fear.. But the captain was able to leave the island, convincing them there is no more fear of being transported to Australia as convicts , it was the 20th Century, and they were not considered convicts any more. This kind of story has always intrigued me that it was a possibility.. If I could find the movie I would like to see it again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.249.104.159 (talk) 03:46, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You will be able to change the name of a page when your account has been registered for four days and you have made ten edits with it. However, before then please check out WP:TITLEFORMAT, as the usual convention here is that only the "First word is capitalised". We don't "Capitalise Every Word". This applies to section names within articles too. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:54, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Expand Autocollapse Table

In the article, alcohol laws of New Jersey, there is a table at the bottom of the page linking to the alcohol laws of other states. It uses the Template:United States topic template which is autocollapsed. In all the other alcohol law series (e.g., alcohol laws of New York, alcohol laws of Missouri), the box is expanded. I Googled "Ambler Borough PA boundary" and clicked on the Wikipedia site. It said on the site that Temple University Ambler Campus is in Ambler Borough when, in fact, it is NOT. It is in Upper Dublin Township. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.225.198.232 (talk) 18:11, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You appear to be right. It looks rather as if the Borough of Ambler is smaller than what people think of as Ambler, and somebody has added the Temple University Ambler campus to the article for that reason (that article does not explicitly say what community it is in, but has an Upper Dublin Township template).
I'm not sure what is the best thing to do. As it stands, the statement is wrong; but might somebody come to the article wanting to know about Ambler, and not knowing or caring that the Borough is only part of what is referred to as Ambler? You could simply remove the sentence from the article (with a suitable edit summary); or perhaps edit it to say that it is near Ambler but not actually in the borough. It might be best to open a discussion on the talk page Talk:Ambler, Pennsylvania, and get consensus. --ColinFine (talk) 22:36, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Einzelnachweise means references. It's a list of references for the content of the article. If you click the arrow ↑ next to a reference then you get to the place it's used, where the reference number is shown. References are auto-numbered by their placement in the article. Your link is not a reference and absolutely doesn't belong in a reference section. It also seems inappropriate for the much smaller weblinks section. Wikibooks

I just noticed that http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Category:Recipes could use a new template like Template:Large category TOC which doesn't seem to exist over there. I would try and fumble through it myself but don't want to break anything.--Canoe1967 (talk) 21:45, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That seems completely unnecessary. There are only 2740 pages in the category, corresponding to 14 category pages. Most letters use less than a page. Template:Large category TOC would make it much harder to navigate the category when you have to scroll the TOC to get to a letter. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:19, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Disambiguation page vs. set index

    What's the difference between a disambiguation page and a set index? Revolution1221 (talk · email · contributions) 21:45, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am not entirely sure what you mean by a set index. Do you mean the table of contents at the top of a typical Wikipedia page? If so, whether to use a table of contents for the multiple sections and subsections or a disambiguation page depends on whether it should be one article, or multiple articles about different subjects that have the same name. Can you clarify? Robert McClenon (talk) 22:28, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Revolution (and, sort of, Robert): Does WP:SETINDEX answer your question(s)? If you still have questions after looking at that, you can come back here with more specific questions. --Floquenbeam (talk) 22:32, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's clear enough to me. Both are lists. A set index is a list of things of the same type, possibly with different names. A disambiguation page is a list of things with the same or similar names that may be of different types. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:43, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For instance, Lake Erie will take the reader to the article about one of the Great Lakes. It has a disambiguation page that lists other things with the name Lake Erie (disambiguation), which include a United States Navy cruiser. A list of United States Navy cruisers would be a set index. See Wikipedia:Changing username. Dismas|(talk) 09:17, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No, Dismas, you've misunderstood what Bazarsarkar wants. They have created a draft article in their user page.
Bazarsarkar, the way to do this is to move the page, but do not do this yet: your article is not ready, and will certainly get deleted if you move it to mainspace now, because it has no references to establish notability. Please read WP:YFA and WP:CORP. However, it will reduce confusion if you first move it to a user sandbox, such as User:Bazarsarkar/Boikart (red because that does not at present exist): it will still be in your user space, but separate from your user page, which is meant to contain information about you as a Wikipedia editor. One more point: if "we" means that several people are sharing an account, please be aware that this is contrary to Wikipedia policy: please create individual accounts. --ColinFine (talk) 11:14, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Dismas misunderstood the request because it wasn't clear. However, if I understand what is being discussed, there may also be conflict of interest issues. Robert McClenon (talk) 11:47, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It wasn't clear because people new to Wikipedia often don't understand a lot of things about how Wikipedia works, in this case user pages (and promotion). Please don't bite. --ColinFine (talk) 12:52, 1 May 2013 (UTC) [reply]
Robert McClenon suggests that you may also be involved with boikart.com, I guess because your draft article says "We". If this is so, you need to read WP:Conflict of interest as well. --ColinFine (talk) 12:52, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pages can be categorized by adding [[Category:***]]. For example, if you want to add an article to Category:Living people, then you would add [[Category:Living people]] to the bottom of the page. Using hotcat is much easier. It can be found at the bottom of every page. To add a category, click the "(+)"-Link at the end of the category line. This will open the input box where you can enter a new category name. --Ushau97 (talk) 16:39, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dammit, nevermind. I just found the note way down in the 'technical details' of the doc for cite isbn that was I was trying to 'fix' because I though it was a typo is a 'feature'. Sigh. Now I need to move it back. Revent (talk) 20:18, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have been trying to figure out how to correct the Oakland Athletics cap logo, which is incorrect. The logo should be this one: http://www.brandprofiles.com/oakland-athletics-cap-logo-3 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cheesesteaks3 (talkcontribs) 20:14, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The first step would be to upload the current logo to en:wikipedia, or if possible to Wikipedia Commons. But there may be a problem with the copyright of the logo. I hope some better-informed editor can give advice. Maproom (talk) 22:41, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As a general rule, any logo has to be uploaded here under a Fair use claim. Mdann52 (talk) 12:48, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"As a general rule" meaning "protected by copyright". There are many logos that are not protected by copyright (eg too simple) on Commons, see commons:Category:Logos of companies and its subcats.--ukexpat (talk) 13:57, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If I had to make a guess, I would say that their logo is likely not protected by Copyright given how simple it is. That being said, I am not a lawyer. I would think though that it would be fine on Commons. Zell Faze (talk) 16:07, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Watchlist

Not too sure where this should go, but I figure this is the best place: I've been using my watchlist a lot recently, especially after getting involved in AfD, AN/I, and such. I was wondering if there is a way to filter out the results on the watchlist to only one specific section of a page, specifically, the section in which I was engaged in AN/I - I don't really need this for AfD though since those are transcluded pages (I think). I've seen WP:HIDEPAGES, but I don't think this is exactly what I'm after. Any ideas? Thanks, Ansh666 20:46, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Might I add, this page is now clogging my watchlist as well Ansh666 22:01, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting a Class C block be blocked for vandalism

Is it possible to request that a range of IP addresses, rather than an IP address, be blocked for vandalism? There is a considerable amount of vandalism coming from multiple IP addresses in a range assigned to a school system in Florida. (Also, am I correct that if an IP address is blocked, that does not block a registered user who is logged on from the IP address? If a teacher at the school system wants to make legitimate edits to an article from her registered account, would that be permitted?) Robert McClenon (talk) 21:07, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In extreme cases, it is possible to block a range of IP addresses. There isn't a specific place to request range blocks, but you might try posting the WP:Administrator's noticeboard. A user using a blocked IP address will be blocked too unless the user requests a WP:IP block exemption. The Anonymouse (talk | contribs) 21:12, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    Since vandalism is involved, WP:AIV? Ansh666 21:21, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The templates at AIV are for an IP address and for a registered user. I expect that if I were to put an asterisk in the last octet of the IP address, I would get an error. Also, if it would block the entire range including for logged-on users, it sounds like a more extreme action than is needed against middle-school vandals. If it were a vandal-bot, like Willy on Wheels, that would be different. Thank you. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:25, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
AIV is only for simple cases of obvious vandalism, and also range blocks usually require CheckUser attention since they may affect many other (potentially innocent) users. The Anonymouse (talk | contribs) 21:27, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    Ah, didn't know that, thanks. Ansh666 21:32, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That is actually false. Most rangeblocks are soft blocks which allow accounts to edit on them. -- King of 05:18, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't aware of that... thanks for the clarification. The Anonymouse (talk | contribs) 05:24, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, soft blocks are exactly what should be done when there is continuing vandalism from a school system, which will permit teachers or administrators with registered accounts to make constructive edits. Since the vandalism appears to have stopped, I won't request soft blocks unless the vandalism restarts. Robert McClenon (talk) 14:57, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is the ability to maintain a Watch List limited to confirmed users? I created a legimitate alternate account to test the notification changes, but I can't put pages on its watch list. Do I need to wait until I have replied to the confirming email, or is something else wrong here? Robert McClenon (talk) 21:55, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I confirmed the alternate account, and I still can't add articles to the watch list from the page tab. I can edit the raw watch list manually, but that is a nuisance. Is there a setting that I need to set? Robert McClenon (talk) 00:20, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder whether you have changed settings in your normal account and forgotten how it works by default. Do you have a tab with a star in the new account? If yes, what happens when you click it? PrimeHunter (talk) 00:34, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is a tab with a star, and it does watch or unwatch the page. Thank you. However, how do I get a "History" and a "Watch" tab to appear at the top of the page? I did that to my main account a few years ago apparently, and I don't remember how exactly. Robert McClenon (talk) 14:01, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Obviously Inaccurate (but widespread) Material

I'm currently doing research to update the article on Creagerstown. I noticed that one of the sources that the article currently cites includes the following text:

NOTE: The name of John Cramer as the founder of Creagerstown in other resources is an error.

    — CREAGERSTOWN, FREDERICK CO., MD , in x, x, Audrey Shields Hancock

From what I have seen in my research, this statement is accurate. Most of the sources that I have read state that the town was Founded by John Creager; only one book source I have found at the library says John Cramer, and even that source mentions it being John Creager later on. I suspect that this book is where the error stems from as it is widely used for research about the towns in the area.

How should I handle this? Should I just treat it as though the book says John Creager, or should I note that some sources state it was John Cramer? Or would it better to just not cite that particular section of that source? I would like to use some of the other information that is on that page, but I know if someone goes back to check the source they will see the mistaken John Cramer instead of John Creager. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you. Zell Faze (talk) 12:36, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You aren't forced to cite every single source. What makes a source reliable is that its information can be trusted. Where information is demonstrably wrong (preferably with reference to other sources), that calls into direct question the reliability of that source. The whole point of "verifiability" is that something has the ability to have its truthfulness confirmed: truthfulness is a precondition for being verifiable (break apart the word: veri- from "Veritas" or truth, -ify- meaning "to make" and -able "has the ability to"). When you see "Verifiability not truth..." mantra spoken around Wikipedia, what that means is that "Truth by itself is inadequate. What matters is the ability to confirm something is true". If it isn't true, it isn't verifiable, by definition. --Jayron32 12:48, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Jayron, I am saving that brilliant explanation in my clipboard manager and I shall plagiarise it shamelessly! Thanks.--ukexpat (talk) 14:04, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect that the issue in that source is that it is a typo and is thus reliable for the remaining information in the text. Thank you for your explanation. I think then that the solution will be to omit that as a source for the name of the founder, but continue to use it as a source for other information about the town. That is the only spot that I have found that it doesn't match the other sources (except of course sources derived from it, which carry the same mistake). Thank you. John Laing disambiguation page

    Hi there,

I am a PR professional (working for an external agency) representing John Laing plc and have an edit I would like to make to the "John Laing" page. The section I am looking to edit is the disambiguation page . At the moment it describes John Laing plc as a "British developer and construction company." John Laing haven't actually built anything for a number of years since they sold their building arm, and so this descriptor is no longer accurate. I would like to change this to "infrastructure asset manager and investor" as per the descriptor found at the bottom of the company's press releases (one example of this can be found here: [1]) - what is the best way of going about this?

    References

I have already posted this on the "Talk" page as I understand that is the best place to start, but so far received no response.

I am keen to go about this according to the appropriate guidelines, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Regards Sdmpwct (talk) 12:45, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First, let me commend you for being prudent here; we ask that PR representatives and others with a conflict of interest do exactly as you are, which is to avoid directly editing the text of articles whose subjects they are directly involved with. It is quite refreshing as an experienced Wikipedia editor to see someone doing it "right". It makes it easier to help you. Now, I'd like to help, but I'm not exactly sure what sort of fixing you need doing. There's two articles here: John Laing, as you note, is a disambiguation page used to point readers to the correct article where a bunch of articles share the same or similar names. John Laing plc is the article about the specific company you represent. Do you need to change something at the John Laing plc article or just at the John Laing disambiguation page? And, most importantly, do you have reliable sources so we can verify the changes you wish to see made? If you can answer those two questions, I think we can move forward fairly easily. --Jayron32 12:55, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The place to suggest changes is on the talk page of the relevant article, so in this case Talk:John Laing. The place where you posted the message yesterday was on your own user talk page, and people interested in the John Laing article won't have seen your message there. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:24, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
... and I think that you intended to provide a reference, so I have taken the liberty of modifying your question accordingly. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:29, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you all for your help so far. The content of the actual John Laing plc page is fine, it's just the descriptor on the disambiguation page. I would like to change the description from "British develop and construction company" to "infrastructure asset manager and investor." The best reference for this would probably be the "notes to editors" at the bottom of any of their press releases. Thank you very much user:David Biddulph for including the full link above - here it is again. [1]
I will raise this on the Talk:John Laing page as suggested by user:David Biddulph. User:Jayron - does my explanation above answer your questions, and if so is Talk:John Laing still the best way of going about this?
Thanks again for your help Sdmpwct (talk) 13:56, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Why not just change the description to "British company"? That would avoid any argument about whether and how to describe its activities; or, indent it under "John Laing (businessman)" and describe it as "the company that he founded".--ukexpat (talk) 14:07, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've just implemented the recommendation of ukexpat, for a couple of reasons 1) Indenting the entry makes it clear the relationship between the person and the company. 2) Being more general seems to be better here for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the phrase "infrastructure asset manager and investor" sounds like industrial jargon bordering on technobabble, that is while to someone working for the company may understand such phrasing, the average reader will not be able to parse that description in a meaningful way. I'm pretty sure that's why the phrase "construction company" was used. Most people understand what a construction company does (A company that builds things). Most people would have a hard time understanding what an "infrastructure asset manager" does, so perhaps having a more detailed descriptor isn't overly helpful. People who search for "John Laing" when they are looking for that company should be able to find it easily on the disambiguation page, and if they read the article they can find out what the company does anyways. I hope this works. --Jayron32 15:06, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    👍 Like--ukexpat (talk) 16:00, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A small point, but you will probably have noticed that your attempt to show the reference above has merely produced [1] without showing the information or an active link. To get the information to show it needs a {{reflist}}, or (as this is a talk page) better {{reflist-talk}} as I used in my addition to your original question. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:11, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't state the class of your daughter, and it isn't really any of my business. However, it is my opinion that a student in high school should not be citing Wikipedia as a source (with some exceptions) If in middle school, it might be OK, as part of a long term plan to teach students how to write papers, but even there, it may not be a good idea. Wikipedia is a great resource, but if your daughter found something useful inGiant panda, she should be looking for the reference, reviewing that to make sure the facts are valid, and then using the reference as her source. the reference should have a date on it. In the rara cases that a reference to Wikipedia is valid (such as an article about Wikipedia) then one should go to the history of the article, and get the perma-link to a version on a particular day, use that as the reference, and that date as the date. Two of the most glaring are that it is not an invasive species that takes over,it is a tree that does not do well outside of the caribbean and must be physically planted and bay rum is not the same as rum. If you don't feel brave enough to try editing the page yourself (perhaps after reading Wikipedia:Tutorial), you could always explain your proposed changes at Talk:Pimenta racemosa, providing references to published reliable sources to support your proposals. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:46, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is someone notified when I edit a page?

I'm doing a paper on Wikipedia and I was wondering.. If I (or anyone else) edit a page, will someone be automatically notified so that they can check the legitimacy of my edit? Or will it just appear on someone's watchlist ?

    Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ilovecats1378 (talkcontribs) 14:59, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If it's not a user page they will only see it in their watchlist. If it's a userpage then they get an orange banner (or they used to, i'm not sure if that's now changed) letting them know and an entry on the watchlist. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 15:06, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The orange alert has been replaced by WP:Notifications, but you can bring it back with this javascript.--ukexpat (talk) 16:05, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally all changes show up on the Recent Changes page. There is a group of users known as the Recent changes patrol that keep an eye on that page to look for anything that is blatantly wrong or blatantly vandalism. Zell Faze (talk) 15:48, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Meta login not working

    Why doesn't my meta login work at http://wikimediadc.org/wiki/Grants.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 16:01, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A Wikimedia account does not mean that you can login to all Wikimedia Chapters by that account. You can login using that account in sites where there is a little a WIKIMEDIA project picture at the bottom-right of every page next to Powered by MediaWiki like wmuk:. But as you can see, in http://wikimediadc.org/ there is no a WIKIMEDIA project at the bottom right. You will have to manually create an account on the Chapter itself. And for future reference, Wikimedia chapters do not represent the Foundation legally. They are separate and independent legal entities, only liable for the work they accomplish in their jurisdiction. --Ushau97 (talk) 16:33, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone create a Wikipedia page for me?

Is it possible to get wikipedia pages made for a young up and coming NASCAR driver. I have tried to create it myself however I am having some complications. How would I go about completing this task? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jluchkiw (talkcontribs) 16:17, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you the subject of the page that you want created? If so, you should get someone else to create it for you, because of the autobiography policy. It will need to be accompanied by reliable sources and you will need to meet the notability criteria. You can go to Articles for Creation to make your request, if someone agrees that you meet the notability criteria. Robert McClenon (talk) 16:23, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I guess that this may refer to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Dylan Kwasniewski - David Biddulph (talk) 16:33, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) The subject of an article needs to be notable. See WP:NMOTORSPORT for some guidance. If you are "up and coming" you may not qualify yet. If you do, you can request an article at WP:RA RudolfRed (talk) 16:24, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are videos of a trailer and a release date a reliable source?

So, I'm going to edit a video game article, but I just wanted to make sure that a video/ trailer would be a reliable source for a release date? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Deviljho12 (talkcontribs) 16:34, 2 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Henry W. Bloch page

On the following page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_W._Bloch - the third item in the References list is a broken link. This link http://www.bloch.umkc.edu/about-the-bloch-school/about-henry-bloch/index.aspx needs to be changed to http://bloch.umkc.edu/about-us/fast-facts.aspx or removed as a Reference.

Unfortunately I have been unable do either. Thank you for your time.
