Main Page error reports

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

• Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
• Offer a correction if possible.
• References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
• Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 21:14 on 11 August 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
• Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
• Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
• No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.

This is incoherent because wealth in Barcelona specifically is not adequate to explain protests in places like the Canary Islands, over a thousand miles away. And the complaint is not the wealth per se but its alleged iniquitable distribution. The hook has numerous other issues including WP:WEASEL, WP:CLAIMED, WP:RECENTISM and WP:NEOLOGISM. And it's not a definite fact that is unlikely to change per WP:DYKHOOK as the protests and politics are trying hard to change things.

A more definite hook for this issue is

• ... that protestors in Spain shot tourists with water pistols?

I mean, hooks don't have to be applicable to the entire article, I don't think anyone is going to assume that the wealth equity divide in Barcelona is relevant to the Canaries, that's just looking for a problem. I'd also like to know what Andrew thinks is causing those other issues, too, bearing in mind the need for concision insofar as "claimed" is concerned. Like, especially saying there's a recentism issue when the protests are (shock) recent — you could level that against many DYK hooks if you wanted. But it is a definite fact, these protests were caused for that reason, that's not going to change. Andrew's issues aren't real issues.

All that being said, I don't really care what hook gets run, feel free to discuss among yourselves which one to use. Kingsif (talk) 10:01, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

Glass eye

• ... that New York Mets executive Jay Horwitz did not publicly reveal that he had a glass eye until he was in his 70s?

Oddly (and improperly), someone chose to add the word "publicly" before "reveal." That's simply not what the source says; nor was it in the proposed hook, which was accurate. The source says "Having one glass eye is something he never revealed until now."" The word "publicly" should be removed, to be true to the RS ref .. pretty much WP 101.

His eye was removed in sixth grade, so presumably his parents knew, as well as whoever sold him the glass eye, and any optician giving him an eye test over the years. Here's what the man himself said about this:

I was born with glaucoma, and had a blue eye and a green eye. Naturally, kids in grammar school could be pretty cruel. They made fun of me and I was subject to a lot of ridicule. So in about fifth or sixth grade, I went to a great eye doctor and he said, “Listen, if you don’t take the right eye out, the glaucoma could spread to the left eye.” So I had the surgery and they put in an artificial eye. Up until when I finally decided I was going to write this book, I was always embarrassed to tell people I had an artificial eye.

And he said something about his glaucoma to the WSJ in 2011 when he was 66 but that's behind a paywall for me. Note that he calls it an "artificial eye" as ocular prosthesis says that these are normally made of plastic rather than glass. Andrew🐉(talk) 09:35, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

We follow the RSs. We have the man's own words. It's a bit odd that an editor would assert that "he" revealed to "whoever sold him" the glass eye (or to his parents, or optician doing an exam of him) that he had a glass eye. That "presumably" makes little sense. The doctor inserting the eye doesn't have to be told by the patient that now he has a glass eye. Nor do the parents have to be told - they bring their child in for the operation and arrange payment for it of course. The word "publicly" wasn't in the RS, wasn't in what he said, and the "rationale" for putting words in the man's mouth is .. unconvincing. No they don't. Artificial eye is imprecise as it also covers to visual prosthesis. WP:COMMONNAME likely suggests we stick to glass eye. Bazza 7 (talk) 12:48, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

Clearly it is a leftover from an earlier edit along the lines of "on [day, month]". When the edit shifted only to year, "on" somehow remained instead of switching to "in" or "during". In any case, the matter is moot now, as the item in question has moved off the front page. Incidentally, "on" is clearly not solely limited to physical objects. Is the front page honest?

Is it "the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit?" Anyone? Or just the politically correct? For instance, I'm a woman with transsexualism who is not transgendered nor has any LGBT involvement. I'm Conservative, religious, have traditional values. I support heterosexuality and have never supported the LGBT thing (though haven't bashed it either). The way I see myself, I'm a woman with a birth defect and not "trans" anything, but I'll take the label of transsexual if necessary, not "trans" nor "transgender." I'm deeply disturbed that normal girls born with TSism (ie., they wrongly were born with penises and will eventually need them gone) are being ushered into the chosen TG lifestyle. I was angry when "MtF" TG men in drag who only partially transition, and mostly for sexual/fetish or recreational purposes hijacked OUR resources and community and then made decisions for us and told us to shut up. That hijacking happened around 2000. Then we TS started receiving the consequences of the TG's choices.

Anyway, the problem is that when I correct the disinformation that lumps the birth defect of TSism in with the CHOICE/lifestyle/politics of TGism, my changes are reverted, I am attacked, I am blocked, the articles are protected, etc. The mods or whoever have a conflict of interest in that they profit off of abuse of TSs and lumping TSs in with TGs, most who are about recreation, constant sex, partying all the time, and keeping intact penises. Every genuine TS woman hates the wrong genitals they have, while most TGs love them - and quite a few love parading around with them sticking out while they are in partial drag. Genuine TS women tend to side with normal society, while male-born TG's support mostly queerness, the unpopular, anything pro-sexual, all while attacking traditions. One reason for lumping TSs in with TGs is to destroy their political power and artificially inflate the LGBT lobby and left-wing causes, since they wrongly claim us when we're in the other camp. So I'm angry, disillusioned, etc. I'm sick that only men in drag are allowed to write about TS women and their changes stand. But it figures when every "MtF" non-op TG has the heart and being of a man. So lumping TSs in with TGs is just one more tactic of sexist men to oppress women. MtF TS's were supposed to have a vagina, but nature robbed them, but MtF TGs are mostly self-hating men who were supposed to be born with their penis (as evidenced by how much they enjoy using it and showing it off online and in port). There needs to be a way where the words of individual TS women count for something on this site when male-born TG folks are used to using male advantage and authority to trample over others and get what they want. This politics and an unfairly stacked deck is why I cannot in good conscience join this site. I am a member of another Wiki site, and its culture is messed up and broken, but not nearly as far gone as this site.

So this is NOT the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit, only the chosen few who drink the Koolaid and march in step with every liberal college professor and with every bully who claims to be a "victim".
