Help, please

A message left at Module talk:Citation/CS1/Archive 9#Change to lua library yesterday suggests that some code you wrote for the Citation Style 1 module is going to die on 18 February 2014. In particluar, mw.message.newRawMessage is going away. This seems a rather hard deadline. I'm concerned because I'm not quite clear on what's happening in that library function. Your change to use the library happened with this edit.

Can I go back to the pre-library function code without problems or is mw.message.newRawMessage doing other things for us that will require additional code?

Keeping track of DOIs used.

Of interest to all devs on the Lua module Citation/CS1 @Dragons flight:, @Trappist the monk:, @Wikid77:

I'm working on the Open-Access Signalling Project, which aims to upload the full article text to wikisource and link it to the reference in Wikipedia. I'm writing the bot at the moment to do this, and I'm encountering a question - how do I keep track of the values of the template {{Cite doi}} and the doi parameter of {{Cite journal}}, in as close to real-time as possible?

Is it possible to modify code of {{Cite journal}} in such a way that it will make a record or push a stream of when the "doi" paramter is changed?

The most efficient approach I can come up with at the moment is to query the SQL servers on Labs in constant loop, returning the results of "What transcludes {{Cite doi}} and {{Cite journal}}" and seeing if the last_edited timestamp is newer than previous? If the last_edit is newer, then get the content of the page and see if the doi values has changed, checking against a local database. But this seems horribly ineffecient.

If I understand what it is that you want, and I'm not sure that I do, I suspect that what you're looking for is not possible. But is 'real-time' tracking of the |doi= parameter in {{cite journal}} citations really necessary? Documents with doi identifiers don't change.

You may recall a discussion of this then-new chart at New bar chart. You seemed to agree that it would be better to change "Largely caused by humans" to "Significant human impact."

This never got done, and the issue has been revived at Graphic.

After you told me to look for it I found it in my spam folder. Under ordinary circumstances, I almost never check the spam folder so there would be a high probability of missing it, if you hadn't mentioned that it was coming. Keyword: Smaug. Google also added a big warning bar over top of it that said: "Be careful with this message. Our systems couldn't verify that this message was really sent by yahoo.com. I've noticed you've blocked the above mentioned user recently. I just want to point out that he is at it again. I've been following him for the past couple of weeks and this user is showing highly disruptive behavior. Now, while I don't agree entirely with ChumleeS method (he should have reported him already several times instead of reverting him) I believe his intentions are in good faith. This is not some content dispute, this is one user deleting content from one page (sourced with reliable references) and inserting content with dubious references (tabloids, daily portals, etc.) on other pages. I also believe this user has one other clone account User:Mitrale89 and also that he he was the same anon user User:212.200.65.244 which I personally reported and which got blocked about a week or so ago...they all have same modus operandi, same interests and identical rhetoric. The source cited but not quoted is 2008. Nothing is said about the proper attribution, and copvio covers unattributed statements of other authors even if they are out of copyright. It seems the 2008 source is inappropriate. Until the the copyvio tag should stand. As for the tools, I get "server error" when I try to check the rest of the text. But if you've read any of it it is a load of copy and paste not suitable for the project. Though related (and often simultaneous), WP:COPYVIO and WP:PLAGIARISM are separate issues. My contention is that {{copyvio}} is not appropriate for issues that consist solely of plagiarism. (I'm not saying that plagiarism is not an important issue, just that the full blanking of copyvio is not generally regarded as an appropriate or approved response.) This is the first time I have dealt with such an issue. I replied at ANI. If plagiarism is the "real" issue, that's fine with me. But the cited source is from 2008, so we seem to be stealing from them what stolt from others. I think a response from a regular copyvio editor can be awaited. I have registered quite a few feature request bugs on phabricator which will be help full for edit filter manager/admins and make their work easier, as below

Besides I am looking for earlier resolution of two priority bugs namely T21565 and T48773. Resolution of this will help wikimedia commons, many small wiki's and to some extant en wiki too.

• Edit filters can track file uploads, they can track comments of files; but can not track upload and comments together and in T21565 we need to achieve the same.

• About T48773 I suppose wikimedia software/search works properly about unicode word borders but unfortunately edit filter has not been able to do it till now, T48773 bug has critical importance level for indic wiki's, and certainly be useful to effectively control vandalism using indic script even on en wiki.

This is just to keep you informed and request whatever help possible about above fearure and problem bugs

It's just a colloquial way of saying average. Specifically, each edit by a non-bot registered user is associated with an account age (defined as the months elapsed since first edit by that account) and the plotted value is the mean of those associated ages for all edits made during each month. I downloaded the stub-meta-history dump of enwiki from dumps.wikimedia.org (43 GB), which contains revision metadata but not page contents. The analysis was done myself using custom code written in Python and Matlab. If that sound like something you would be interested in doing, I could see about sending you the code. To be honest, I never really finished the analysis. I have meant to do a full write-up and add a few more images, but I've been preoccupied with real-life events the last couple months. Question regarding Solar Spectrum

Hi, Dr. Rohde!

I am currently working on a project regarding the greenhouse effect, and came across your excellent [spectrum]. Specifically, I am referring to the 5250 °C blackbody curve. I am trying to plot something similar using the expression for solar exitance and converting to irradiance at earth by multiplying with the factor (Rs/d)^2, with Rs being the solar radius and d being the distance from the earth to the sun. Doing so however, I get a curve which is very similar but with a slightly smaller amplitude (peak amplitude in my graph is 1.4 but above 1.5 in yours).

I would greatly appreciate it if you could comment on my approach and/or elaborate a bit on yours.

Help me Admin! I want to participate in Wikipedia, and use my username. I can't log-in. A temporary password problem has prevented me from logging on while I make this edit to an Admin's Talk Page to ask for help. When I try to log-on at the temporary password page, i get an error. It tells me that I am either already logged-on or am using an expired or incorrect password. This is not correct. I think that you should also work on the error messages, to make trouble-shooting errors possible. Knowing what might have gone wrong is not useful to developers. There is a lack of a place to report technical problems. Assuming that all the code will always work is not up to the standard of what is possible with coding today. Please fix the log-on problem, I can’t do it myself. I want to participate in some form in the future, is there a course or short introduction to editing and writing available? In what order should I read the available resources? How much of the content on any help page is repetitious and duplicated on some or all help pages? AbuseFilter question

Hey Dragons flight, just wondering if you could answer a quick question about the AbuseFilter configuration. I'm going to propose enabling the block function, but I'd like to leave the rangeblock and degroup capabilities disabled while providing the block capability to only administrator edit filter managers, not non-admin EFMs. Is there a way to do this? If I understand the code correctly, to edit any filter you need to the user right "abusefilter-modify". In addition, to apply an abuse filter "restricted action" you need the user right "abusefilter-modify-restricted". By default the restricted actions are "block", "degroup", "blockautopromote", and "rangeblock". The restricted user right is needed to add or remove the restricted actions as well as to edit any filter that has it applied. Given this understanding, I believe that if you give the "abusefilter-modify-restricted" right to admins then only administrator EFMs would be able to use the block function. One would separately need to enable the block function which is currently disabled on enwiki.

Blocks would come from a user with the name Mediawiki:abusefilter-blocker with the log message Mediawiki:abusefilter-blockreason including filter description and number as parameters (currently the filter number, parameter $2, is not used). According to my reading of the code, if a block is generated, the message Mediawiki:abusefilter-blocked-display is displayed to the blocked user with parameters for filter description and filter number. Assuming the blocking filter is also set to show a warning, the user should also see the associated warning message which can be customized in the normal way.

I should note that I haven't tested these features, and this is just my understanding of the code, so I may be mistaken in some way. Dragons flight (talk) 11:51, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

@Dragons flight: That's really helpful, thank you. You mentioned that the block function is disabled here; how would we enable it, and could we disable the degroup, blockautopromote, and rangeblock functions so that they don't become available when admins are given modify-restricted? Also, MediaWiki:Abusefilter-blocker seem to have been changed to "Edit filter" but there's no User:Edit filter or User:Edit Filter. At present, "blockautopromote" is available by default. "Block", "degroup", and "rangeblock" are not available by default. Though available, no one can use the "blockautopromote" function since no one has the required abusefilter-modify-restricted permission. So to add the block option and no others, one would have to add the "block" option and remove the "blockautopromote" option.

I think one would need to add the following to the enwiki section of [10]:

$wgGroupPermissions['sysop']['abusefilter-modify-restricted'] = true;
$wgAbuseFilterAvailableActions[] = 'block';
$wgAbuseFilterAvailableActions = array_diff( $wgAbuseFilterAvailableActions, array( 'blockautopromote' ) );

It appears that before issuing a block the AbuseFilter actually creates the account for MediaWiki:Abusefilter-blocker if it doesn't exist (or in fact seizes control of it, if it does exist). So it shouldn't be a problem what name is used. Though it creates the account, I don't think it creates or modifies any of the pages associated with the account, so someone would need to create an appropriate user page, etc. Dragons flight (talk) 13:21, 1 January 2016 (UTC)

Numerical recipes for fixed point convergence

If you just iterate the function, then near the fixed point you are dealing with approximately a linear transform of the deviation w.r.t. the fixed point. This means that components of the eigenvectors with eigenvalues close to zero will vanish rapidly, after a while you're then left with a vector that lies approximately in a subspace spanned by eigenvectors with relatively large eigenvalues (close to 1). You can then easily estimate how this linear transform acts using Gram Schmidt orthogonalization. Near the fixed point we have:

$f(x)=x^{*}+A(x-x^{*})$

So, if you iterate this k times and subtract $f(x)$ then $x^{*}$ drops out and you are dealing with vectors that can be assumed to be in a subspace spanned by eigenvectors close to 1. If you perform a Gram Schmidt orthogonalization using a few of these vectors and then expand subsequent differences of iterates in the basis, you obtain the dominant eigenvalues (many eigenvalues close to each other will appear as a single eigenvalue). Then you're done because you now have access to both A and f(x), e.g. the difference between $f(x)$ and $Ax$ is $(1-A)x^{*}$, so you can then make big step forward by computing $x^{*}$. This can be made more systematic as follows. You have to deal with the likely case of a large number of eigenvectors with large eigenvalues, many of which make a subdominant contribution to the initial vector. If you then eliminate the most dominant ones you're going to be left with the next dominant one which you need to eliminate via Gram -Schmidt again. So, what you end up with is a scheme were you iterate the function a number of times, extract approximate eigenvalues $\lambda _{i}$ and eigenvectors $\left|v_{i}\right\rangle$ and then construct another function with the same fixed point $f^{\text{new}}$ that has the eigenvalues of these eigenvectors reduced to approximately zero. In Dirac notation we can write:

5 Million Year temperature graph

Hello, I saw your temperature graph at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Five_Myr_Climate_Change.png . Since the Earth experiences such large variations in temperatures, it makes sense to consider that our trend towards global warming is inevitable. It seems as if we've been in a temperature dip, and maybe we're just climbing out of it at a faster rate than we might have (at worse), but in any event a global temperature increase is just part of Earth's cycles.

That's a possible interpretation of your graph, is it not?

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Dragons flight. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

• Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
• A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

ITN for Shimon Peres

Hi Dragons flight, you promoted the ITN for Shimon Peres to the main page. I was the nominator. It is my first successful nomination at my second attempt so I am still an ITN relative neophyte. In the Peres discussion, I asked a few questions but never got a response, so I hope you might be able and willing to help:

1. I noted as nominator that I was not sure who qualified as an updater. I did add his death to the "post-presidency" section, though others had already included the date of death in the infobox. I'm not clear on whether the updater refers to the first person to add the ITN-blurb fact, or if there are multiple and it goes by quality / extent of additions (like these), or also to addressing the issues in the ITN discussion (like these edits adding references, content, and addressing referencing problems, adding a total of 3862 bytes). TRM adding a single updater, Avaya1, who has certainly added a lot to the article, including since Peres' death but those didn't start until the ITN discussion was at this point and you posted the blurb about 90 min after Avaya1 started editing. So, would you please clarify for me what qualifies an editor(s) as an updater, and did I qualify in this case?
2. It was my understanding that a user talk page credit goes with ITNs. TRM gave one to Avaya1 but I have had no notice - is it only for the updaters? If there is one for the nominator, does s/he also get an updater credit if s/he is an updater?
3. Any other comments or advice for an ITN newbie?

ITN notifications are considered optional. As mentioned at Wikipedia:In the news/Administrator_instructions#Credits, once something is posted, anyone is free to give notice since it doesn't require admin tools. Some admins do give notice most of time, others do so rarely. I'm definitely in the latter camp, but I've given you a notice now since you asked about it. There isn't an official definition of "updater". The person or people that included the new news will definitely count. Personally, I would also consider other people who significantly improved an article prior to posting to also be "updaters", but as I already noted, I only rarely post such notices myself. Dr. Rohde, I have for a long time been a fan of this chart, and the fact that it is so often reproduced in other sites is a testament to its effectiveness. But I feel it is overdue for an update. 2015 was (and 2016 will be) much warmer than 2004, and I would imagine there are many updated proxy records that have been published since then that could be useful as well. I thought about taking a stab at creating an updated version myself but thought I would try contacting you first to see if you were already planning an update, and, if so, if there is any way I could help you.
