== Brook Benton Goldmine Article - "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy" ==

Hi,

Just following up on my message of 16 November 2016. I haven't heard from an editor so I thought I'd check to see if there's a problem. Here is my original message:

Brook Benton Goldmine Article - "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy"[edit]

Hi,

My name is Bill Bronk. I wrote an article about Brook Benton which was published by Goldmine Magazine on 27 September 2016. The article is extensive and covers his bio, chart activity, singing style, song-writing prowess, reviews by various music writers and the lack of recognition for Benton by the powers that be in the music industry.

Your coverage of Benton is excellent. Parts of my article, I believe, could be used to broaden that coverage. Or the article could be used as a reference tool by fans or researchers. Here's the goldminemag.com link: http://www.goldminemag.com/article/brook-benton-let-sing-im-happy.

I hope my article can be used to give the public a more enhanced picture of Brook Benton... and more recognition for a truly great singer, songwriter and performer.

Thanks, Bill Bronk 100.4.148.37 (talk) 22:39, 16 November 2016 (UTC)

    UK nationality edit warring

I need a bit of help here. I'm not sure where to mention this, and don't think this has reached WP:ANI level just yet. Erzan (talk · contribs) is an occasional editor who makes changes to people's nationalities in BLPs seemingly through personal preference, then seems prepared to edit war if these are changed back, and refuses to compromise and just wants to argue the toss by providing links that make passing or tenious references to the subject. The British v constituent countries argument is an old one on Wikipedia, and they can be highly disruptive. I tend to think that they should not be changed without a good reason, and have pointed this out to the editor concerned, who currently has the article Adele in their sights. Previous attempts to discuss this matter with them have failed. Can someone advise please? Thanks, This is Paul (talk) 01:00, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It may be the time for a trip to the ANI board, in order to determine wider community consensus and views. It depends on the level of disruption, if any, that the colleague is creating. I would suggest that it is indeed your call, but maybe more eyes are needed here. Irondome (talk) 01:06, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, this argument has previously been had with the user, so more eyes would be useful. I'll post it and see how it goes. This is Paul (talk) 01:11, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I seemed to remember a consensus about not changing it one way or another just for the sake of it but I cant remember where that was. MilborneOne (talk) 16:00, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How do I turn off auto-spell correct?

How do I turn off auto-spell correction? I don't remember having this feature before, and it's driving me batty. Thank you. Netherzone (talk) 02:49, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Linking to a category with a piped link

I am trying to make a link to [[Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Massachusetts]] in my User Page. However, simply adding the aforementioned text will cause it to categorize my User Page under that category, rather than link to it. Specifically, I'm also trying to make a piped link, such as [[Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Massachusetts|Massachusetts]] with no luck. I am sure this has been answered, but I have checked the Linking and Pipe Linking templates with no answers, and my search terms aren't specific enough to turn up relevant answers. Thank you for any help. BostonUrbEx (talk) 03:01, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, duh... I already have these linked elsewhere in my User Page and I forgot. I believe I have solved the issue with a colon. BostonUrbEx (talk) 03:02, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    I'm all set. Please disregard! BostonUrbEx (talk) 03:08, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@BostonUrbEx: I'm glad we could be of assistance! --Gronk Oz (talk) 06:26, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@BostonUrbEx and Gronk Oz: Yeah, me too! And I'd like to add the same trick works if you need to link to an image (instead of embedding it in a page, e.g. [[:file:smile eye.png]] file:smile eye.png). A colon simply forces special wikilinks to stay just wikilinks. --CiaPan (talk) 10:06, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Citation links to copyright works

Following a previous thread from another board, I'd like to know what the policy is regarding links to copyright works in article references outside of Google Books. In my case, I worked on a references section for a particular article and linked to specific pages on Google Books where possible, although I couldn't do so for the ones not uploaded to Google Books yet. I had some reviewers at a FAC nomination ask to do a spotcheck of sources, although this would seemingly be difficult to do for these non-Google listed sources.

My question is if I can either: (a) have the "Informational notes" section (see "references section" link above) on a different page than the main article and quote relevant text from the book page for each source not in Google Books. Thus, each reference in the article would link to either a citation with a corresponding Google Books link directly to the page cited or a ref note with a quote, or (b) Upload a PDF of the book to a third party website such as archive.org and link there rather than Google Books. The PDF could be abridged similar to Google Books to comply with fair use requirements.

For consistency and simplicity, option B would likely be better, although I would like to confirm whether it is acceptable under fair use and Wikipedia rules to use links to PDFs of copyrighted books without explicit authorization, granted that the PDF is abridged to only have the pages necessary for the article's references.

Please let me know if I need to clarify anything and thank you for the help. Tonystewart14 (talk) 03:34, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

PDFs of scans are not deemed reliable sources in this era of Photoshop. There is nothing on Earth wrong with a footnote to a printed work without any internet link whatsoever. --Orange Mike | Talk 04:52, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Tonystewart14, I've written more than 60 FACs and often used book sources. I don't usually link books, even through Google books, since the text viewed there is not constant either with time or geographically, the exception being out-of-copyright books on eg archive.org. Similarly, I don't link abstract-only journals, only full text. spot checks don't have to be on every source you use, and I'd expect there would be some web pages that could be checked. And a reviewer might use Google books to check a book source Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:16, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(later) your question inspired me to look back at bee-eater, a recent FAC. It's clear that the large majority of my sources don't have non-paywalled links to confirmatory text. However, there are checkable weblinks, Google books can be used to check some of the books (since that's how I read the text initially), and people have access to journals to check those. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:29, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good example. In my case, there is a bibliography section with ISBN/DOI numbers for most sources. Considering all the feedback so far, I believe the article should be fine in terms of reference formatting and I'll just go through once more and make sure all text within the article is cited appropriately. Tonystewart14 (talk) 14:43, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
IMHO citing a Google Books page is almost as bad as citing amazon.com or another book dealer. Simply cite the book itself, and whenever possible include the ISBN in the citation as it functions as a "magic word" (when correctly formatted) that links to Worldcat, which in turn locates the book in libraries near the reader. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 07:44, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Tonystewart14: As others have already said, web links are not necessary. If there's an important point or nuance from a source which is difficult for other editors to access, I'll often use the |quote= parameter in the citation templates to add a short quotation, so that the sense of the original is preserved through successive edits.
@Dodger67: I don't see anything wrong with including a |url= link to google books in addition to an otherwise complete {{cite book}} with ISBN &c. But there's no need to. 71.41.210.146 (talk) 03:16, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The inclusion of a "convenience link" within a book citation is perfectly acceptable. The problem is when editors reference Google Books (or Amazon) as if it, rather than the book, is the actual source. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 10:13, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Vandalism in "RELATED PAGES" link

There is vandalism in one of the articles below "RELATED PAGES". Below the name of the page in this section (at the bottom of the page) there is some text that must be deleted because of vandalism. How can this text be edited? -- Odalcet (talk) 04:15, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Odalcet. You can fix this yourself using the "Edit" tab at the top of the page / section (on a mobile device it looks something like a pencil). Or if you don't feel confident doing that, let us know which article has the problem, and somebody here may take care of it. --Gronk Oz (talk) 06:55, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Odalcet: The "Related pages" feature at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures uses descriptions from Wikidata. Click "Wikidata item" under "Tools" in the left pane of the article. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:53, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Often articles about areas where the native language is not English have poor spelling and grammar because people from the areas that are concerned who have learned English try to edit the articles themselves. Even though they don't know the language well enough to do it well. It can sometimes be a challenge to know what they meant to say. Please, feel free to fix what you can. †dismas†|(talk) 16:19, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've just made a mistake re. linking to the original French article which should lead to fr:Joseph Delteil (poète). Don't know how to correct the mistake. Can somone please fix it? Thanks in advance; LouisAlain (talk) 11:02, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted your erroneous edits to the Wikidata page for the French disambiguation page, and added a link for your English page to the Wikidata page for the poet. I would recommend that you complete the translation before adding any more links to your page from other pages in the English Wikipedia. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:21, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Galaxy note

    This article is biased.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_Note_7

Words like "It is best known for being one of the first phones to spontaneously burst into flames" and "As an unannounced feature, it also included increased risk of fiery explosion" are INEXCUSABLY BIASED and must be rewritten.

Wikipedia should not be a playground for biased people to do this kind of childish misinformative rants. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.103.75.241 (talk) 13:41, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

To support what the original poster said, it is worth noting that Wikipedia has a formal policy concerning writing articles with a Neutral point of view. So while those battery problems should be included in the article, they should be described in factual, unbiased language and they should be given appropriate weight in the article. --Gronk Oz (talk) 19:40, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Out of date article

I did some copyediting on Kingston and District Sports Hall of Fame, basically replacing external links with references. Then I decided to see if I could find some reliable sources about the hall. What I found instead is that no new inductees have been added to the list in about 10 years. It seems inevitable that a list like this will constantly be out of date, especially if it is a subject that is not in the headlines. Wouldn't it be better to just have the inductees page as a source and not try to keep up with all of the new inductees?

And, although I found lots of newspaper articles about the inductees, I couldn't find any (by googling) about the hall itself. The pages that I did find were just copies of the history that is on the hall of fame website; this raises issues of notability as well. So, I'm not sure if I should flag the article for deletion, remove the section on inductees and leave the article unreferenced, or leave it as is and put my concerns in the talk page. Leschnei (talk) 14:15, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No independent references, no evidence of notability – looks to me a strong candidate for deletion. "Out of date" could be addressed, but that's not the issue here. Maproom (talk) 15:08, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've never proposed an article for deletion. Do I just use {{subst:proposed deletion|concern=reason for proposed deletion}} at the top? Leschnei (talk) 15:35, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And there is one editor who started the page and did the initial edits. I can ping him. Leschnei (talk) 15:37, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    Ok – I've proposed it for deletion. Maproom (talk) 16:11, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help, Leschnei (talk) 18:13, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Marketing Firm Wikipedia.

Hello, I was tasked to create a wikipedia page for my marketing firm.

Hey Hallarsan. It was deleted because it was copy/pasted from http://hallarsan.com/info/. In almost every circumstance, it is not permitted to copy and paste substantial content from other websites onto Wikipedia, because this is usually a copyright violation. In some cases, content owners choose to legally release text or images for use on Wikipedia, and instructions for how to do so can be found at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. However, full text from a website is usually inappropriate for the encyclopedia because it is usually overly promotional in tone, whereas Wikipedia's policy on article writing requires that they be written from a neutral point of view.
Finally, you may want to consider requesting a change of username at Wikipedia:Changing username, or register a new account to use with a different name, since our username policy forbids usernames that give the impression of representing an organization or business. TimothyJosephWood 15:55, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hallarsan: User:Timothyjosephwood is right, Wikipedia takes copyright law very seriously, and copyright violations are removed immediately when found. But that was not the only reason for deleting the article. If it was like the text you posted above, it would also have been deleted as failing to include any evidence, in the form of references, to establish thet the company is notable, in the sense in which that word is used here. Moreover, it used excessively promotion al language, unacceptable in an encyclopedia. Maproom (talk) 16:03, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
All of this assumes that your company is notable enough for an article per WP:CORP. Maproom touched on this but I thought I'd include a direct link to our guideline on companies. You may also want to read what what Wikipedia is not which includes WP:PROMOTION. †dismas†|(talk) 16:07, 27 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The language, in addition to being a copyright violation, is appallingly and unacceptably promotional, and would have to be cleared out with a metaphorical flamethrower of purification. Crap like, "propels forth unique ideas and the passionate people behind them" and "sculpts the most solid form of online brand expression that allows the customer to interact and learn" has no place in an encyclopedia. --Orange Mike | Talk 02:27, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Topic: crowd funding - new page or article "Community Capital Marketplace" or "Hybrid Funding"

Our Company, Breakaway Funding, LLC would like to publish an article on a derivation of the crowd funding model. We have tried several times to publish but the articles continue to get taken down.

Alternative funding models are emerging in the marketplace for businesses trying to raise capital.

"Community Capital Marketplace" or "Hybrid Crowd Funding"- Commercial funding sourced from individual investors as well as financial institutions (e.g. community banks/credit unions). Differs from crowd funding in that the model is specifically for business (not individuals) and source of funds includes accredited financial institutions.

We understand Wiki's position on Conflict of Interest, Self-Promotion and have written an article within the parameters which continues to get deleted. Could we please speak to someone about how to overcome this hurdle.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Someone Keeps Deleting Things Off Of The Page That I Monitor

The page is for a collegiate comedy group that I am in charge of. A user keeps deleting things that have been on the page for years. [1] I am an official person related to this content and I know more about what should be on the page than a random person who is trying to delete everything. The things he's deleted have been on the page since 2012 and there is no reason they should all of a sudden be deleted. Not sure what's up - a page is (or isn't) being redirected, but it doesn't seem to be a cache or move issue.

At the bottom of my talk page, a user left a message about the article cashless society. I clicked to view the article but it follows an old redirect to Cashless Society (band) when I do so. However when I go directly to the article from the browser there's no redirect, and indeed the logs + histories of both pages don't show any redirect.

Can other people see this redirect from my TP, and if so, what's going on? (If not, why am I seeing it!)

How do I get back to the wikitext editor?

I make 99% of my edits in the Visual Editor. Today I needed to use the classic wikitext editor for something. Clicking the Edit tab while in the VisualEditor used to take me there - now it doesn't. I can't find anything in the documentation about how to get there. What gives? If you are referring to the Visual Editor, Login, uncheck Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta, optionally change Editing mode to Show me both editor tabs, and save your preferences see WP:VE for more information. TiggerJay(talk) 08:13, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Quote within a quote

Normally, a quote within a quote is handled with double-quotes encapsulating single-quotes; however, using the {{quote}} template necessitates not having external double-quote marks. The question is: should the internal quotes remain as single marks or be changed to double? The specific example (from here), also contains song titles which normally would be in double-quotes:

The overall style is as that of boogie-woogie, as Mancini explained:

I looked at the scene several times [and] I thought, 'Yeah, they're walking eight to the bar', and that brought something to mind, an old Will Bradley boogie-woogie number called 'Down the Road a Piece' ... Those little elephants were definitely walking boogie-woogie, eight to the bar. I wrote 'Baby Elephant Walk' as a result.[1]

What you are describing is basically quotation marks within a block quote. Per MOS:QUOTEMARKS within {{quote}} you would use the original, source quotation marks, so if they're single then use single, if double - use double. Match the source. But again this is only in blcokquote form. Your understanding of single-inside-double is accurate for short quotations. TiggerJay(talk) 08:07, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there - I fixed the problem with this edit. The flagicon was in the wrong spot, and there was an extra pipe (|) in there, which means 'new column' in wikitable syntax. Is there a reason you switched around the Pin and Time rows for Tozawa and Johnson? I ask since I'm pretty clueless when it comes to wrestling / where the Pin mark belongs. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 08:15, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have extended a quote from a reliable source already on this page. Unfortunately, a subsequent editor was not aware and accidently deleted this additional information - citing no reliable sources!!! The information/source is clearly in the references - particularly ref. number 22 which has the full quote about the coronations - and other refs: 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27. I see now that a new editor - Luis150902 - has fixed it all up which is great. But the edit is "pending". 101.182.188.199 (talk) 09:03, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello IP. The appropriate place to have this discussion is first and foremost on the article's talk page, which it looks like neither you nor the other editors (hello user:Luis150902, user:Srbernadette, user:HJ Mitchell, user:Antique Rose) have yet attempted to do. Hello, 101.182.188.199. My fixing was not accepted because I was fixing errors in the editing of a IP user and because I'm not a pending changes reviewer (= user that can accept pending changes). Chinese stealth fighter: J-31 vs FC-31 nomenclature

Nearly two months ago, I indicated an apparent error in the name of a new Chinese aircraft, called on Wikipedia Shenyang J-31, based on a lot of sources. However, a well-documented military expert, specialist of the Chinese defense, explained on his website why such name in in reality incorrect despite its wide use: http://www.eastpendulum.com/la-fin-du-programme-shenyang-fc-31

Indeed, as he explains, the name J-xx in the Chinese military nomenclature implies a program that has been approved and financed by the Chinese army, and this name is given directly by the army. It is equivalent to what is observed in the US Army. For example the Eurocopter EC145 is called UH-72 Lakota in the US nomenclature. But the internal reference in Eurocopter remains 'EC145'.

To come back to the 'J-31', the problem is that this model has neither been financed, neither been accepted by the Chinese army. As consequence, the name 'J-31' in incorrect. Thus, we should refer to this aircraft under its Aviation Industry Corporation of China internal reference 'FC-31', also considering that Shenyang is now trying to sell this model to foreign countries. For the same reasons and in the name way, the FC-1 developed for the export market by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group (subsidiary of Aviation Industry Corporation of China) has never been called 'J-1' but always 'FC-1'.

As consequence, I suggest: 1) to rename the article Shenyang J-31 as 'Shenyang FC-31', 2) avoid from now to use the name 'J-31'. If other websites want to continue to use erroneously the name 'J-31', that's their choice, but it is incorrect, 3) possibly include somewhere in the article a small sentence or small section explaining why the name 'J-31' is not correct, despite a wide use.

    Ndiver (talk) 09:45, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, therefore the most common usage is the guideline for page names; however, a concise nomenclature section explaining above information (with sources) would be very welcome. --2606:A000:4C0C:E200:E0D2:D810:9DBE:2D63 (talk) 15:50, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • WP:COMMONNAME say we should use whichever name is used most commonly, not the official name. The sources go by J-31. This being said, I am going to add a short explanation of the name in the lead. TigraanClick here to contact me 16:22, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Wouldn't it be even better to use for the article the correct name and redirect the incorrect name to this article? Ndiver (talk) 18:35, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, by that logic Volkswagen Beetle page would be named Volkswagen Type 1, for example. (Please read Tigraan's link). --2606:A000:4C0C:E200:E0D2:D810:9DBE:2D63 (talk) 19:03, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've read the article, but my point-of-view is that for this article, Wikipedia is responsible for sharing and propagating an information that we know to be wrong, because it is not a nickname like for the Beetle, it is an error from journalists or bloggers that are not doing their job properly. That's their choice, but Wikipedia should keep its articles correct and without errors. Which is presently not the case. Moreover, the Chinese version of Wikipedia calls it FC-31, the aircraft is sold by AVIC as FC-31, and the aircraft is not in service in the Chinese air force. Lastly, there is an increase trend to call it FC-31. As example, a recent article from the French journal Le Monde says in its first sentence: 'an improved version of the FC-31 Gyrfalcon, previously known as J-31, maid its first flight Friday in Shenyang'.Ndiver (talk) 23:40, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Our job is not to decide what is correct or incorrect, but to relate what reliable sources say about a subject. The article's talk page is the best place for this discussion. In my opinion, the article is adequate the way it is currently; with sourced explanation of the nomenclature. If the "correct" name becomes more common in media sources, then renaming the page could be reconsidered. --2606:A000:4C0C:E200:E0D2:D810:9DBE:2D63 (talk) 02:17, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This is an unusual case. Unless somebody can produce a proper registered type certificate per the Project guide, policy obliges us to go with WP:COMMONNAME. In essence, our policy is "verifiability not truth".— Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 15:26, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am a translator and I read Wikipedia in several languages. The same thing happened about 4 years ago, when I got a new computer, and so I gave up on Wikipedia for several years. But, eventually I created a new user account. At that time, admin said there was nothing I could do to reset the passwword. Is it really necessary for me to create a new account every time I get a new computer? To be clear, we do NOT need to see your full email address. But if you tell us what email provider (gmail, etc) you're using it might help us tell you specifically where to look. But generically, you will need to search places like your spam, junk, or promotional folders/filters in your email program. Also in order for it to email you a new password, you must have associated your email address with Wikipedia which is optional. So basically, if you didn't associate an email address to your account, the admin was right that your only option is to create a new account. TiggerJay(talk) 21:27, 28 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Trying to understand some odd swproxy.wmflabs.org behavior

I was looking into the issue discussed at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Computing#swproxy.wmflabs.org gets indexed in Google when I encountered some odd behavior.

I have a user page at https://swproxy.wmflabs.org/wiki/User:Guy_Macon that appears to be a proxy for my normal userpage, but when I click on the talk tab or directly enter the URL https://swproxy.wmflabs.org/wiki/Talk:User:Guy%20Macon I see:

    Talk:User:Guy Macon
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Error fetching body for Talk%3AUser%3AGuy%20Macon: 400
    Categories: Disambiguation pages

Instead of what I expected (either my talk page or the normal page not found)

Clicking on the view source or view history tab gets me:

    {"type":"https://mediawiki.org/wiki/HyperSwitch/errors/unknown_error","method":"get","uri":"/w/index.php"}

The log in /create account tabs go to the expected pages, but trying to actually log in or create an account lead to a file not found error.

Normally I wouldn't care what weird things swproxy.wmflabs.org does, but swproxy.wmflabs.org gets indexed by Google and a user could easily end up on a page that looks like Wikipedia but acts screwy. Assistance in creating a new article

Hello all. I've posted a comment on Talk:Margaret Thatcher about why I believe a new article (namely Public image of Margaret Thatcher) needs to be created. Margaret Thatcher#Political impact is packed with excessive detail that could easily be moved to an article based on e.g. Public image of George W. Bush. I need experts on the subject to help contribute to this yet uncreated article, yet I'm not sure who to WP:CANVASS other than users that have already contributed at the talkpage. I have only received feedback from one user so far, but on the other hand I have contacted a couple of WikiProjects related to the subject also. In short, I want to create an article based on the public image of Mrs Thatcher and how divisive her reputation is in Britain and perhaps elsewhere, like Bush. Help in creating such an article would be very much appreciated indeed.--Nevéselbert 15:40, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a look at (and share with your supervisor) our conflict of interest policy:
    Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest
The best practices are that you should list corrections and suggestions for improvement on the article talk page. In the case of highly trafficked pages, this may be enough, and other editors of the article will evaluate and take action. In the vast majority of articles, there may be too few editors following this particular article and the request can be brought to a broader group of editors by adding {{request edit}} (Including the curly braces) to the post.--S Philbrick(Talk) 17:31, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Asking for a blacklisting modification - any way for it to be done in a prompt fashion?

It seems like the process for reviewing blacklist modification requests is somewhat lacking in admins attending to such requests, so how do I get help?

My issue concerns the site listed at [1]. I DO understand why it was blacklisted (it is a forum, and was being linked to MASSIVELY on mainspace, when it is not a reliable source per wikipedia rules), even though it is NOT a spam site. But I want the blacklisting modified so it only applies to mainspace, which would fully serve the intended purpose. Someone asked a question on the refdesk, and I wanted to post a link to a page on the site, but couldn't, even though it would be useful to them. How do I get this request attended to in a prompt manner? I don't mean to sound pushy, I understand you're all volunteers, it's just that it seems like the relevant area for reviewing requests for blacklist modifications and exceptions has suffered a degree of admin neglect. I am also hopeless at formatting such a request, and finding the relevant page, I am no wikipedia expert. Please forgive my frustration. Any advice or assistance? Using Subscribed Software for Image Creation

If I have access to a software subscription, such as a database that allows users to create maps using the subscribed database and ArcGIS software, would I be able to upload those images to Wikipedia?

    Thanks, 144.121.83.50 (talk) 21:01, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP user. It depends entirely on the copyright status of those images. If the proprietors of the database claim copyright on the maps (or assert that they are copyright some third party, which is possible) then you cannot use the images in Wikipedia, unless they have licensed it in a way consistent with our Image use policy. If they state that the copyright in a map produced using their database will belong to the person who produces it (unlikely, I think, but possible) then you are the copyright holder, and you can choose to license it on the fly as you upload it to Wikimedia Commons. If there is no explicit statement about copyright, I think you have to assume that you do not hold it; but I am not sure. In that case, I suggest you ask at the Copyright Questions page. --ColinFine (talk) 22:54, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Finding "my" XFDs that are still open

Is there a simple way to find all the open deletion discussions that I have participated in, as proposer or as commenter? Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 21:55, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Dodger67: It doesn't look like there are any AFDs that you have participated in that are still open. I'm looking at this. For me, the same page shows I have participated in one that is "Not closed yet". That only includes AFD though, not RFD or MFD or CFD or IFD or whatever other FD we have. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 23:30, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Odd - I checked your contributions and it came up with Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Adam Parker, which the tool didn't find for you. But the tool found Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Komboni for me. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 23:33, 29 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    New Editor - Adding Content

I'd like to add my Mother and have my siblings help edit. Is this possible? Or would it be considered a conflict of interest? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bettyssonnumber2 (talkcontribs) 13:52, 30 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Central discussion forum for content issues

I've heard that consensus was reached to create a centralized discussion forum for issues that would include merges, but that it has yet to be implemented.  I'm trying to locate that consensus.  I've skimmed the archives at the Village Pump and here, but am having trouble locating the discussion.  Thanks, Unscintillating (talk) 16:16, 30 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Brook Benton Goldmine Article - "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy"
