Gionee (officially Gionee Communication Equipment Co. Ltd. and stylized as GIONEE; Chinese: 金立; pinyin: jīn lì) is a Chinese smartphone manufacturer based in Shenzhen, Guangdong.[2] Founded in 2002,[3] it is one of China’s largest mobile phone manufacturers.[4] According to Gartner, its market share in China was 4.7% in 2012,[5] and it has expanded into other markets, including Taiwan, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Vietnam, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, the Philippines and Algeria.[6]

Gionee Communication maintains two processing plants (Dongguan Jinming Electronics and Dongguan Jinzhong Electronics) with a total investment of more than 80 million RMB (about US$12 million), a factory floor area of more than 20,000 square metres (220,000 sq ft) and over 1000 employees.[citation needed]

Gionee India

In August 2016, Gionee introduced their plans to build a manufacturing plant in India. At the same time, Gionee introduced its first Made in India smartphone with the introduction of the F103 model. The model was manufactured in a Foxconn plant in Sricity, Andhra Pradesh.[7]

On 30 September 2016, Gionee launched the S6 Pro in India. The S6 Pro is Gionee's first VR ready smartphone which is powered by MediaTek's MT6755 octa-core processor.[8]

Association with BLU Products

BLU Products, a cell phone manufacturer based in Miami, Florida, sells many rebadged Gionee phones under their brand name in the United States and other North American markets, and engineers phones together with Gionee China and Gionee India.[9] Curiosity was generated in 2014 after Internet users noticed a similarity between the Blu Life Pure XL and the Gionee Elife E7.

Controversies

In 2014, Gionee was accused by German media of delivering smartphones and tablets with pre-installed malware.[10][11][12]
