Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

Independent editors

After having my draft Wikipedia page declined, I was emailed by a Tamsin Amanda who describes herself as an "experienced Wikipedian", and stating she can fix my draft for approval. Then I get a message that she will charge USD 280 for the task. Is this legitimate? RhetorPete (talk) 04:33, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@RhetorPete: Do not pay this person any money. You should never need to pay anyone to get a draft approved. Report them to paid-en-wp@wikimedia.org immediately. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 05:05, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@RhetorPete: If this person e-mailed you via Wikipedia, then they violated the terms of use of this web site. This should tell you all you need to know about the person's sense of business ethics. Paying someone to create or edit a web page is often futile and is strongly discouraged but is not prohibited, as long as the paid editor makes a full disclosure (see WP:PAID). Using our resources to advertise this service is prohibited. An article is ultimately accepted or rejected based on the notability of the subject and not on the quality of the editing (see WP:AMOUNT). We will help you for free to improve the quality. -Arch dude (talk) 15:54, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@RhetorPete: Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure#How to disclose says: "paid editors must provide links to the user page(s) of their Wikipedia account(s)". I guess this "Tamsin Amanda" didn't do that. There is no User:Tamsin Amanda. The name may be false. Some male scammers give female names because many people are more trusting of women. It sounds unethical if they first give the impression their help is free and then mention payment after the client/mark has expressed interest. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:33, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Best way to preview edit messages on other wikis

I noticed that English Wikipedia allows you to preview your edits and also preview the edit message. This is not available in German Wikipedia and a few others. Am wondering if people have insights/suggestions on best way to preview. For example something like

or :Category:Cats would show up as a blue link in an edit message, but inside a namespace would either show a blue link, or behave as an actual category page. Shushugah (he/him • talk) 15:12, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Shushugah: - if you are working outside article space, then categories need a colon after the square brackets. Non-existent categories will show up as redlinks. Mjroots (talk) 15:36, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Shushugah: I just went to edit an article on the German Wikipedia, and it has a preview option just as we do here. If you are having trouble editing there, the help desk is at [1] RudolfRed (talk) 16:50, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@RudolfRed: My question is specific to the syntax/limitations of the Edit message preview, not the article preview. For example I already know that templates don’t link properly inside edit message. Shushugah (he/him • talk) 18:14, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Shushugah: By "edit message" I guess you mean edit summary. It works the same and shows on preview in the standard source editor at the English and German Wikipedia. Maybe you use another editor in German. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:15, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Need help wording an article

I'm currently constructing the article "Murder of Cameron Blair" (it's not anywhere near finished, so I'm not looking for general feedback here). The article is about a heavily publicized murder committed in Ireland, which involves two minors who, under Irish law, cannot be named. I am referring to them in the article as "the then seventeen year old" and "the then fourteen year old", which is similar to how they are described in Irish national newspapers. I'm just wondering if there might be a better way of phrasing this, as the constant repetition of "the then x-teen year old" seems clunky. Cheers. Xx78900 (talk) 15:24, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Xx78900: how about "the older" and "the younger"? In the lede, state "the older, then 17, and the younger, then 14" and use "older" and "younger" thereafter. If you think you should, you may use "the older suspect" (or whatever noun makes sense) but the noun can remain implied, just as it is with the clunky wording. -Arch dude (talk) 15:40, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see that the news coverage uses Boy A (older) and Boy B (younger). That would work.--Quisqualis (talk) 20:55, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Top 5 CRM

Who decides which companies get a mention and which don't? https://top5-crm.com/eu/ 1, 4 and 5 have a Wikipedia entry - 2 and 3 don't. Who makes this call and on what basis? Bernburgerin (talk) 17:13, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Bernburgerin: It is up to an interested volunteer editor to create an article. First, the company needs to pass WP:NCORP, and then someone can go to WP:YFA and follow the steps to create an article for review. RudolfRed (talk) 17:23, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bernburgerin: Take a look at our Customer relationship management article and the various "list" articles that are linked from it. Our own lists are at least as well researched as some random web site. Why should we care what is listed on a site named "Top 5 CRM"? -Arch dude (talk) 17:36, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Compilation DVD

A compilation of four notable short films (Lieberman in Love for one) was published on DVD "Perverse Destiny Vol. 3." in Australia by one MRA Entertainment Group, probably now defunct. Is there any way of properly referencing this fact ? Cite AV media does not seem to cover this kind of publication. Doug butler (talk) 22:24, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Doug butler: Citation templates are for your convenience and are not mandatory. The information you place in your citation must be adequate to identify the reference so another editor or reader can in theory identify the published work. Just format the stuff between the ref tags to create a citation that is similar to the one generated by a template. -Arch dude (talk) 18:53, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks AD. I'll see whether the reverting editor considers that an improvement, but I think he wants a reference independent of the DVD package (quote:"Anyone can say that"), which is worse than unlikely. Doug butler (talk) 22:00, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Shortened footnotes

I want to add a large number of new references to a page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abe_Gubegna), most of which would relate to specific pages in longer texts.

I'd therefore like to change the referencing style to that used on this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._A._B._Mynors. I believe these are shortened footnotes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Shortened_footnotes).

However, I don't know how to replace the old with the new. Can you help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andyisediting (talkcontribs) 09:08, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Andyisediting: Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors contains over 25,000 articles with errors caused by shortened citations. It's best not to attempt them at all unless you are highly experienced in their use. DuncanHill (talk) 09:18, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@DuncanHill: Thank you. Is there an alternative that would allow me to capture page numbers in the references? --Andyisediting (talk) 09:39, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Andyisediting: I like Template:Rp used with refnames. DuncanHill (talk) 09:51, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Andyisediting: I've made an example page at User:DuncanHill/References. You can see there how to use rp, and I've given examples of using the chapter field in Template:Citebook which I think can be helpful when one book is used for lots of references - it can also help readers when different editions have differing paginations. DuncanHill (talk) 10:21, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Andyisediting: R. A. B. Mynors already has a consistent referencing system (it uses sfn and cs1|2 templates). Adding rp runs afoul of WP:CITEVAR so don't use rp on that page. If you want to switch the article to rp, you must gain consensus for that at Talk:R. A. B. Mynors. There are no sfn errors in that article and, comments here to the contrary, using sfn does not require an advanced degree in rocket science. There are tools available to assist in the implementation of sfn-based short-form citations. See ‹The template Category link is being considered for merging.› Category:Harv and Sfn template errors.
Trappist the monk (talk) 10:39, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk: Andy isn't talking about the Mynors article, it's the Gubegna article he wants to improve, and that does not use shortened refs. DuncanHill (talk) 10:44, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And the Mynors article is not consistent in using shortened citations, I count three (used between them nine times) which are not. DuncanHill (talk) 10:52, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh - and it didn't start with shortened citations, see original version, and there is no discussion on the talk page to approve changing to them. DuncanHill (talk) 11:04, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Goodness! So much anger. Yeah, I erred in my understanding of the question. On 10 May 2021, R. A. B. Mynors was promoted to FA. Since that version of the article, decay; it happens to every article, FA or otherwise. Still, the preponderance of citations in the article body are sfn. That the article made it through GAN, two peer reviews, and two FACs suggests that consensus for the current CITEVAR was achieved; how, I don't know – I stay away from those discussions – too much drama.
Trappist the monk (talk) 11:57, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Not angry, just dispirited. DuncanHill (talk) 14:25, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Turner was born two miles from Nottingham Racecourse in north Nottinghamshire, one of three daughters of Kate and Richard Turner.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Arteeeze (talkcontribs) 10:04, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Arteeeze, the article has a talk page where you can discuss its content. However, the assertion that she is one of six daughters appears to be supported by the source used in the article. You'll need to be clear on why you think this should be changed to 'three daughters'. Girth Summit (blether) 10:32, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is a newly-created organisation, so I am creating a page for it out of the precious Cambridge University Press page. The infobox however is not formatting properly, and I can't work out where I have typed the wrong thing. Help in rectifying this would be appreciated ASAP.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Fabius Planciades Fulgentius (talkcontribs) 4 August 2021 11:45 (UTC)

I've cleared up the mess at the top of the article, by ensuring that the square brackets within the infobox were paired up. Something that's not clear to me: is "Cambridge University Press & Assessment" a new name for "Cambridge University Press"? If not, how are they related? This ought to be explained in the first paragraph of the article. Maproom (talk) 13:47, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see. The very well known Cambridge University Press, and the long established Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate, have merged, into an organisation using a name that no-one has heard of. You are merging the two Wikipedia articles, without prior discussion. I really don't think that's a good idea. Maproom (talk) 14:01, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for clearing this up. However, I don't think that is an issue at all. This is a well-publicised merger and there is no reason why this would be objected to considering that the old Cambridge Assessment page redirects to this page. Also, the Wikipedia pages of the preceding organisations are now redundant - so *not* doing the merger makes no sense.Fabius Planciades Fulgentius (talk) 15:37, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No, Fabius Planciades Fulgentius, just because an organisation has merged with another one does not necessarily mean that Wikipedia's article about it is redundant. Things that were notable remain notable even if they cease to exist. If they transform into something else, sometimes it's appropriate to move the article and add new information, but sometimes it's more appropriate to create a new article. A fortiori, if two organisations merge it is sometimes appropriate to keep both articles and add a new one. The merge may make sense, but certainly needs discussion. --ColinFine (talk) 16:35, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, point taken regarding the need for further discussion to iron out any potential objections. However, I still maintain that in this case it is a non-issue. The new page is the re-named University Press page and the Assessment page (from which all relevant details were merged) was relatively sparse. Furthermore, the merger is really a top-level organisational reshuffle that doesn't affect the examination boards under Cambridge Assessment (each with their own pages) as well as the underlying publishing structures of the Press. It is *not* the same thing as two companies merging to form an entirely distinct entity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fabius Planciades Fulgentius (talkcontribs)

Articles that do things...

I noticed that List of ISO 639-3 codes has a module(?) that allows for searching based on codes, this is something that I've never seen before. Is having this sort of thing in an article something that needs approval in advance? And is there a list of articles in mainspace that have this sort of capability?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Naraht (talkcontribs) 4 August 2021 13:43 (UTC)

Naraht: The search box itself works using the InputBox extension. It's not specific to the article, only the parameters it is used with. The code-to-language mapping is done using redirects. It appears these redirects were originally maintained by PotatoBot, apparently generating them from the very list itself, but it hasn't edited in over 7 years. I don't know if they're still being kept up-to-date. – Rummskartoffel 16:07, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't call that edit "vandalism," but I would agree with Frank6292010 that it's inappropriate, as it violates WP:UNDUE; we don't put spam warnings on Bill Gates's page either. Wikipedia is not here to right great wrongs. OhNoitsJamie Talk 14:05, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

German Wikipedia may have different conventions to en.wiki (they are all separate projects). Also WP:OSE; & FWIW I would agree this is not vandalism but good faith edits which may (or may not) be unencyclopedic but a clearer explanantion for removal would be useful. @BaboonOSX: See WP:REMOVED. A user may remove (almost) anything from the user's own talk page, without replying. Other users are free to interpret this as an acknowledgement that the user has read the removed content. @Coxalanx: A WWII-era postcard is almost certainly copyrighted, so you cannot upload to Commons. If you can offer a fair-use justification that satisfies our very rigorous fair-use test, you can upload to the en.wikipedia. However one of the criteria is that there is no non-copyrighted alternative picture available. Since a picture made by a US government employee in the course of duty is non-copyrighted, it is very likely that such a picture exists. -Arch dude (talk) 18:42, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A chunk of the lede, including , was stuck inside reflist's |refs= parameter. This created duplicate definitions for these references, and those duplicates were empty, which caused the error. Removing the chunk in question fixed it. – Rummskartoffel 20:29, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

article taken down

Hello,

The article that I wrote, my hours of work was simply taken down by another person without providing me feedback or notes. They called it promotional and just took it down. However, whatever I wrote was cited from newspaper articles and other IMDB sources. It's my hours of work. I cannot believe that the content that I provided was simply deleted without me having any access to it, or even before getting a chance of editing it. I was not provided any feedback either.

Please give me access back to the content I created. I don't know who deleted it, but they cannot hold my content hostage. Please get back to me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pathgechhe (talkcontribs) 22:37, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The deletion log visible at Neil Mukherjee tells you who deleted it. --David Biddulph (talk) 22:44, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
‎Pathgechhe (ec) I'm sorry that you haven't had a good experience. Successfully creating a new article is the absolute hardest task to perform on Wikipedia, and diving right in can often lead to the feelings that you are probably feeling right now. We usually suggest that editors gain experience by first editing existing articles and also using the new user tutorial.
You may request undeletion at Deletion Review, but to succeed you will need to show how the deleting admin erred, or any new information that was not available at the time. You may ask the deleting admin directly for their views. I can say that most of what you wrote was completely unsourced(or at least the sources were not inline next to the information), and much of it seems to be your opinion instead of a summary of what independent reliable sources say about this musician, showing how they meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable musician. 331dot (talk) 22:51, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You might also/instead say how you now realize that you erred, and what radical transformation you plan for the article if it is returned to you as a draft. (Tip: One part of this transformation would be elimination of the numerous external links at the foot of the deleted article: see Wikipedia:External links. Readers who are interested can look in a search engine for themselves.) -- Hoary (talk) 23:23, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please give me access to my work. It is hours of work, and it cannot be taken down by someone's whim without giving me any feedback. Wikipedia cannot be that subjective...right? I will require access to my work to reform it. The thing that perplexes me most is the lack of detailed feedback. If you have to take something down, then provide feedback, give them the chance to do better, if they fail at that, or hold on to their opinion that they are correct even after giving them proof, then it can be taken down. More than anything, it is my work, and I will reform it. But it cannot be held hostage to someone's view, to be entirely taken down so that I don't have any access to work on it. And, I can provide proof for whatever I wrote. It's in the external links that I listed. It also has three direct references to it. I can provide more proof, but first my article has to be reinstated as a draft for me to work on. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pathgechhe (talkcontribs)

And, whoever deleted it, should know that it's their responsibility to provide feedback, or we are dealing with a power differential here that has no relation to the work or the article.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Pathgechhe (talkcontribs) 23:47, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Pathgechhe: As 331dot has mentioned in his reply, you can ask for the elimination of the page be undone at Deletion Review. Read the instructions and leave a request there so an admin can review it and give you a proper answer. Isabelle 🔔 23:51, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I will do that. If I get access to the draft, I am willing to work on it too. And, the links I provided are published newspaper articles. I was suggested not to include them. I thought references should be done through published data.....so if you can.provide me with some feedback on that, that will be great Isabelle Belato. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pathgechhe (talkcontribs)

@Pathgechhe: You did get feedback, it was just very terse. The feedback is in the deletion log. Your article was deleted because it meets the speedy deletion criteria for WP:G11. Please read that section. You seem to think that just because you spent hours on it, some unpaid volunteer here should spend a non-trivial amount of time giving you a more detailed explanation for the deletion. Because so many people try to use Wikipedia for advertising and promotion, we simply do not have the time for that: hundreds of articles must be deleted every day. If you had used the process recommended in WP:YFA, you would have created a draft instead of an article and you would have been treated more gently. -Arch dude (talk) 01:36, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Pathgechhe, references must be to reliable, independent, published material. Newspapers vary in reliability. Britain's Daily Mail, for example, is not reliable. (And newspapers aside, you mention IMDb above. IMDb is not reliable either.) Unfortunately, it's possible to use reliable, independent, published material to confect a promotional article. Be careful to avoid promotion. -- Hoary (talk) 02:22, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your constructive feedback.

What about if IMDB listed the truth of awards? How do you want me to cite it? I used IMDB for that purposes only, as it cited the list of awards. This was not a promotional article, and the information that has been cited is not promotional. There is no lie in it, or extra talk or embellishment. Give me an alternative source that is not IMDB that lists awards. And, also give me examples of how people list it in wikipedia, when they get the awards. I will be happy to oblige. DO you want pictures of the certifications themselves? No one posts that....do they? And the other sources were from the "Times of India", which is a respectable source, and in the external link, there are articles from The Hindu, from The Rock Street Journal, from The Wire. Pathgechhe, I would skip deletion review and instead post a message at the talk page of the admin that did the deletion, and ask them to DRAFTIFY the article. Mention that you have sources and that you want to use the Articles For Creation process to get help and clean the article up. The admin may be willing to restore the article to our special "Drafts" area. Hope that helps. –Novem Linguae (talk) 09:04, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Lexikon des Mittelalters

Hi all, does anyone know how to get Lexikon des Mittelalters to recognize surname in the harvid? Currently it asks for an author, which breaks harv citations (see Alaholfings). - Aussie Article Writer (talk) 00:18, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalisation of "manor"?

The category Category:Manor houses in Finland includes both articles named with "manor" and articles named with "Manor". These should be made consistent, but what is the preferred style? Is it "manor" or "Manor"? JIP | Talk 00:54, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is a tricky one. "Manor" is of course not a Finnish word, but the English one being used to translate the Finnish kartano (or the swedish gård). In English the word can be part of a name, and so capitalized, or it can be a descriptive addition for an establishment whose actual name does not contain the word, in which case it arguably should not be capitalized. So for example somewhere might be called "Bogmyrtle Manor", or it might be a manor called "Bogmyrtle" (compare Broadlands or Kultaranta) and be referred to as "the manor of Bogmyrtle" or "Bogmyrtle manor". (That said, I doubt that there is much consistency in this regard in English historical usage.)
We need someone with Finnish expertise to say whether or not this is also the case for kartano in Finnish. If it is, then "M" or "m" should be used on a corresponding case-by-case basis, assuming the usages are known. If not, I myself would prefer to standardise on "M", but others may take a different view. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.122.62.68 (talk) 06:13, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well Finnish does not use capitalisation like that. The word "kartano" is always spelled with a lowercase letter regardless of how it is used. So "a manor in Hagalund" is "kartano Hagalundissa" but "Hagalund Manor" would still be "Hagalundin kartano". The word "kartano" is only spelled with an uppercase letter if it begins a sentence or is itself a proper name, for example a surname "Kartano" instead of the word "manor". JIP | Talk 09:55, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
JIP I would suggest a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Finland, pinging the authors of articles in the category. Manor with capital M would be consistent with Category:Manor houses in England and most articles in Category:Manor houses in Sweden. TSventon (talk) 11:56, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What is the easiest way to get Google Chrome to properly display uncommon unicode characters, such as the characters in the infoboxes at Rohingya people and Sumerian language? Please ping on reply. Thanks for your help. –Novem Linguae (talk) 08:35, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think you’ll have no choice but to install appropriate unicode fonts for every single script you want to display. GNU Unifont is good as a fallback, in my experience. The Noto Sans fonts are quite extensive (but also about 1GB alltogether). Noto Sans Hanifi Rohingya can be found here, Noto Sans Cuneiform (for Sumerian) here. Navigating the user portal - where to submit a draft article

Hi - as a newcomer to Wikipedia I've been working through the tutorials and still find the portal complicated to navigate. I think I've submitted this article for review but not sure I've done it correctly. Draft:Clive Wilson (author). Is there anyone who could help advise if the article is good enough for publication and if I've actually managed to submit it? sorry if its a really basic question.— Preceding unsigned comment added by SarahMorganPrimie (talkcontribs)

SarahMorganPrimie You need to click the "Submit your draft for review!" button in the box at the top of the draft to actually submit it. I would not submit it yet, as there are large unsourced portions. Please see Your First Article. 331dot (talk) 13:29, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi all - I think I've declared I know this person and want to be sure there is no bias - is there anyone who would be interested in editing and/or adding this article? @SarahMorganPrimie:The only absolute requirement for an article is that the subject must be notable by our definition, based on references that meet some specific criteria. Until you find such references, you should not do further work on the article, since it will be rejected. Please see WP:NAUTHOR and especially WP:CSMN. Nothing else will substitute for these references: see WP:AMOUNT. -Arch dude (talk) 16:06, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, SarahMorganPrimie. Three of the five references in your draft were written by Wilson and therefore are of zero value for establishing notability. The other two are links to organizations that he is or was affiliated with. An acceptable article should summarize what reliable sources completely independent of Wilson say about him. You have furnished no such references. The draft has a promotional tone and phrases like "purposeful alignment and leadership of individuals, teams, organisations and communities" amount to non-neutral jargon unacceptable for an encyclopedia article. Please read the neutral point of view and eliminate all traces of promotionalism. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:27, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting sidebar templates

Hello there! I have a question but also a favour in a sort of way. I would like to have these three templates, Template:Bakir Izetbegović series, Template:Zlatko Lagumdžija series and Template:Đinđić sidebar be deleted. I had made them four months ago as I thought they were needed I guess. Now that I think about it, they aren't really needed. There's almost no series of articles on them, most of the links point to just one article and are not really detailed on enough. Yes, I am basically putting "my own" templates up for deletion :D. Is there a way for them to get deleted in a short amount of time and do I need to put them up for deletion or can someone else do that? Can I even put up for deletion pages that I created? Bakir123 (talk) 15:32, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bakir123, see Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#G7. Author requests deletion. You can nominate your own pages for deletion by adding Db-self which should be fairly quick. Only you can self nominate your pages TSventon (talk) 16:59, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

1/ Could someone review the text if the English translation is ok ? 2/ How could I add the colomn with the picture and the main info

Thank you very much for your help

Best regards

Gilles

@Gillescar: The article still needs work. Although it could be moved into mainspace already, I recommend you leave it in draft space a little longer and keep working on it. The right-hand sidebar column is called an Infobox, and we have a lot of types, all deriving from the same base. Other photographers' articles (e.g., Ansel Adams) seem to use Infobox artist. If your subject does not seem to fit that one, try the more generic Infobox person. -Arch dude (talk) 17:30, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Gillescar: I did a trivial amount of copyediting and added the submit template. When you submit it the editors who enjoy this work will help you: I'm not good at it. (I may have messed up and actually submitted it by mistake. Sorry.) You might also try to attract the attention of some additional bilingual editors. Sadly, I only speak English. Some of these guys are listed at Wikipedia:Translators_available#French-to-English. • Yes you can. Accounts are not tied to specific IP addresses or physical devices. If the other account has logged out, you can log in to Wikipedia on the same device using your own account. JIP | Talk 01:07, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)@Damak15: Yes. When you bring up the browser and then bring up any Wikipedia page, look at the upper right corner. If it says "log out", then your device is already logged in. log out by clicking that "log out", and then log in using your own user name. When your are done you should again log our, since you are obviously using a shared device ans you do not want somebody else using your account after you leave. You can log in on ad many different devices as your wish. -Arch dude (talk) 01:09, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Damak15: Some devices (e.g., Linux computers) support multiple users. In this case you log onto the computer, and then bring up a browser. In this situation, there is no need to log out of Wikipedia, just log off of the computer, and the next time you log onto the computer you will already be logged onto Wikipedia. The computer will keep its various users separate. -Arch dude (talk) 01:14, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Editor bugs

I'm still using the old low-level edit application ( , ) and see no reason to change. Recently it's become smarter, turning the text within the brackets and blue. No problem with that but several bugs that affect the editing experience (Ins key toggles overtype mode, lower slider button inactive for two). Are other users affected? I've seen no comments or am I looking in the wrong forums? Doug butler (talk) 12:48, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have not seen any such improvement to editing the source. The text doesn't turn blue for me. Are you using some kind of extension? JIP | Talk 13:35, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The only extension I have added is a patch that highlights differences between "before" and "after" edits in Revision History. Very useful for detecting tiny differences, but yes, the highlight is the same pale blue. I didn't understand the code, just followed the instructions from an experienced user and it's worked fine for over 5 years. I haven't changed any options, not deliberately anyhow. The "lower slider button" quirk is really weird — it won't move the slider, and hover over it and the mouse pointer turns to a diagonal arrow and you can move the whole slider bar sideways. Another weird effect is a reduction of functionality of [Ctrl+F] — the number of found instances is correct, but the search arrow buttons won't take you to them. Doug butler (talk) 16:09, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If source text has different colors then you have enabled one of Wikipedia:Syntax highlighting#Syntax highlighting of wiki-code for editors, probably the highlighter marker mentioned first. Maybe it interacts poorly with your browser. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:12, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mev Dinc

Someone wrote quite a good draft about Draft:Mev Dinc, a famous video game programmer in the 1990s. Dinc is worth mentioning on Wikipedia as there are articles about quite many of his games already. The problem however is that part of the "Games" section is in Turkish, which I can't translate because I don't understand the language. Otherwise, if it can be translated, can I just click on "Submit" and have the draft submitted for review? JIP | Talk 16:38, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think, for something relatively simple like these isolated terms, Google Translate is probably sufficient. It translates, for instance, "Yarış" as "Race" and "Sürüş" as "Drive", so "Yarış/Sürüş" would presumably be "Racing/Driving" in English as a designation of a game genre. Deor (talk) 17:06, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JIP: Belated ping. Deor (talk) 17:13, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I translated the Turkish terms into English using Google Translate and clicked on "Submit". Let's see what happens next. JIP | Talk 17:24, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently the submission was rejected because of lack of sources and reading like an advertisement. The original creator can now see these messages too, I'll let them work on the draft first. JIP | Talk 18:23, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Book copyright violations?

Hi,

Oh dear God, I might have just totally invalidated two days and too many hours worth of my own research work.

I have made a page on the Dennis Rapier fire engine, heavily edited the Dennis Sabre article and just recently inserted an infobox and context for the Dennis DS series. I have done so with the use of a Google Books copy of Andy Goundry's 'Dennis Buses and Other Vehicles' that I have - admittedly - skipped through the limited pages with a trick in the URL, doing so with the rationale that what I was doing was fair use. Only in retrospect following my edit on the DS Series have I just realised Google's 'Copyrighted material' notice meant something important.

Flicking through WP:COPYVIO and WP:NOTFREE, I think I've now realised I've made a grave mistake. In essence, what I should've done is bought a physical copy of Goundry's book. Even then, though, I don't think that would've helped either, as for the DS article, I think I've violated point 2 of WP:NFCCP: "Respect for commercial opportunities. Non-free content is not used in a manner that is likely to replace the original market role of the original copyrighted material."

What I've now realised is that nobody needs to read the DS section of Goundry's Dennis book anymore, as it's all there instead on the Wikipedia page. On balance, though, it seems Goundry's book is only the current accessible, encyclopæedic-type source I can find on older Dennis fire engine specifications, and without that, it is only unsourced or inaccessible sources. This leaves me in a bit of a pickle. I am ready, but not so much willing to make an emergency revert of the violating content, so to be sure, are my previous edits certain violations of US copyright law? What is fair use, and what is not? And where on earth do I cite this information?

Please help, I really should've considered the implications of these edits earlier. Hullian111 (talk) 19:35, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Hullian111: Did you summarize information from Goundry's book in your own words? If so, you should be in the clear; every article on Wikipedia is a summary of sources about the article's subject. Facts are generally not copyrighted; for example, the fact that the Dennis Rapier stopped production in the early 2000s is just basic information. On the other hand, the specific text that Goundry wrote about the Rapier is protected by copyright, so you would not be able to directly copy (or closely paraphrase) his words into a Wikipedia article. For all intents and purposes, it doesn't matter whether you obtained the information from a hard copy of the book or through Google Books, and no one would be able to tell anyway. DanCherek (talk) 20:28, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@DanCherek: Sorry if this is a bit long, haven’t figured out paragraphing replies: Reviewing my past edits using Goundry's book, I think the bulk of the problem might lie in the Dennis DS infobox edit. These are statistics and info on the dimensions and engineering on the fire appliances, and while I can easily pull stats from the archived Dennis Fire website for the Dennis Rapier and Sabre, there are no credible online sources for the DS, RS and SS besides enthusiast sites/forums, and I'm not sure whether I can use those as good references. That would essentially knock out a big bulk of potential edits for the RS, SS and redlinked Dennis appliances. And by my "own words", would the extract on the Rapier article (compare with the source: "and a parts shortage as a result of the discontinuation of the Renault Midliner, which sourced the Rapier's front suspension and brakes") be fine as a benchmark? I’ve realised that copy-pasting is a no-no, but I’m not so sure on this form of paraphrasing. Hullian111 (talk) 20:47, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The infobox at Dennis DS series seems like a perfectly fine use of the Goundry source, because the fact that the Dennis DS is 6,136 mm long is not copyrightable — it's just a basic fact, kind of like the Empire State Building being 1,454 ft tall. I would agree that the book you cited is a far better source than internet forums. For your question about the Dennis Rapier article, I compared it to the source (I think you referenced the paragraph starting with Towards the end of the Rapier's production run...) and your wording seems sufficiently different, so I don't believe there are copyright concerns. DanCherek (talk) 21:02, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Whew, thanks for the aid, looks like I might be in the clear - let me know if I'm not yet totally. Guess I'll hold off on my "Emergency Revert per WP:COPYVIO", then - hopefully this self-styled bad press doesn't get the attention of the author. If anything, I'll make sure to buy a physical copy of the book before I consider adding new fire appliance pages, and I will take better notice of copyrighted source regulations. Hullian111 (talk) 21:17, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your work on the articles. Google Books is a fine and legitimate resource for writing Wikipedia articles, and if you ever want to refer to a source that you don't have access to, feel free to ask at WP:RX to see if someone else can provide it to you. DanCherek (talk) 21:30, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@DanCherek: Our rules are intended to prevent you or anyone else from introducing copyrighted material into Wikipedia. You have (apparently) not done that: you have read copyrighted material and extracted (non-copyrightable) information and then written or enhanced our articles in your own words, which is exactly what we editors are supposed to do. Neither Google nor the original author can require us to remove your work from Wikipedia. As an entirely separate issue, you appear to believe that you may have violated the terms of service of the Google Books site: this has nothing to do with Wikipedia or Wikipedia's rules, and is between you and Google. Many authors believe that Google was sailing awfully close to copyright violation when they digitized those books in the first place, and Wikipedia does try to avoid encouraging or abetting copyright infringement. If this bothers you, you might try to see if the book is available in a library. It may be available for electronic checkout via the Internet Archive, which lets you borrow the same book over and over for free, usually in 30-minute increments. -Arch dude (talk) 00:41, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging Hullian111 since I'm guessing the above message was meant for them, not me. DanCherek (talk) 03:43, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude: Thanks for the additional clarification, and sorry for the very late reply, I got a little caught up. Think that answers my initial concerns very plainly, and I might keep that Internet Archive library cite idea in mind - besides, I’ve got the book on order from a bookshop chain now, so I shouldn’t be needing to use Google Books anymore.
Interesting what you say about Google Books - I’ve always seen it as an incentive for readers to buy the full book, but I can understand the copyright concerns. With the book due soon, I think I might soon be in the clear using it. With that, I think that might be it for this, thanks all - hope to get back to Dennis fire engine editing soon. Hullian111 (talk) 18:05, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Hullian111:To be clear, you are not citing Google Books currently, and if you use the Internet Archive you will not be citing it, either. In all cases, you are citing the book and not the method you used to read the book. The Google Books or Internet Archive URL that you place in your citation is what we call a "convenience link", and is not mandatory (although it is appreciated) even if that happened to be the link you used to read the book. By analogy, you would not give the address of your local library if you borrowed the book there. You should leave your convenience link in your citation even if you do eventually use the physical book. -Arch dude (talk) 19:22, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

William Appling

Hello,

I am a new user and have recently been creating an article for the american composer William Appling. It was deleted as it apparently fell under the category of unambiguous advertising/promotion (G11). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:William_Appling_(conductor,_pianist,_educator)

There is still clearly a lot for me to learn about Wikipedia, and I believe the main issue was with innapropriate use of external websites as references. It was not my intention to promote or advertise anything or anyone.

Could anyone here clear up what the issue was? Is my best bet contacting the user that originally deleted the draft?

Thanks.— Preceding unsigned comment added by CharlesVictorDudley (talkcontribs)

User:CharlesVictorDudley, clicking on the link to the deleted page produces a message that the page was deleted for reason WP:G11: the page consisted of unambiguous advertising or promotion. The link explains G11 further. You can contact the deleting admin who may be willing to supply a copy of the page. Your user page says you are a paid editor and it is best practice for paid editors to mention the fact on talk pages. TSventon (talk) 20:37, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@CharlesVictorDudley: Please read WP:YFA to get some guidance. The only absolute requirement for a article is that its subject must be notable by our definition: see WP:NARTIST and WP:N. Do not do any further work on your article until you have found acceptable references to establish notability: look at WP:CSMN. Nothing can substitute for acceptable references: see WP:AMOUNT. We can help you with anything else. -Arch dude (talk) 00:04, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
CharlesVictorDudley, I am an administrator and so I was able to read your deleted draft. I would not have deleted your draft under G11 although it did contain some promotional language that could have been easily corrected. I believe that Appling is probably notable and that Wikipedia should have an article about him. You are correct that your draft completely misused external links, which have an important but circumscribed use on Wikipedia. A larger problem is that vast swathes of the article are entirely unreferenced, which raises concerns about verifiability and the prohibition on original research. The fact that you are a disclosed paid editor may also be a factor. As a paid editor, you are expected to be fully conversant with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines and comply with them, and should not expect experienced unpaid volunteer editors and administrators to have much patience with substandard work. Simply by answering your question, I am helping you to get a paycheck and will not get a nickel out of it. But in the spirit of improving the encyclopedia, I will provide you with a copy of your draft by email if you contact me on my talk page. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:30, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Criminal Partners - how to create individual articles when significant overlap

I'm interested in creating an article about Sal Magluta and Willie Falcon who were recently chronicled in Cocaine Cowboys: The Kings of Miami. They def. are deserving of an article beyond the brief mention on Continuing Criminal Enterprise Statute.

However it's unclear to me given the overlap in much of their crimes and background, if there should be two separate articles about the two of them or one single article. I'm not exactly sure if even a shared article is something that exists.

I'm wondering what the best way to approach it is.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks! | MK17b | (talk) 22:37, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

See Bonnie and Clyde for an example of a "shared article". Maproom (talk) 22:46, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

THIS IS CONFUSING. I am wondering if someone can help. I'd like to write on an article something like this:

I am hoping to widen this article. Here is a reference for a perspective that is yet to be Mentioned.

@Treepose1: Please refrain from using big text. If the concern is that the text is too small, please use your browser settings to magnify text. Otherwise, please rephrase your question. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 22:40, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Treepose1: You could use the Refideas template on the article's talk page, or just create a new section on the article's talk page with the information and your suggestion. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 01:34, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate articles

Someone created an Olympian stub, Darnya Pikuleva, with the athlete's first name spelled incorrectly. A few minutes later someone created the same article with the correct spelling (Daryna Pikuleva). Not sure what to do here and I was hoping someone with more exp might. Thank you. JTtheOG (talk) 22:42, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As the two versions had roughly the same content, I went ahead and converted the Darnya article to a redirect to the Daryna article. If "Darnya" is not considered to be a "likely misspelling" (per WP:R), then it can easily be deleted later. --Finngall talk 22:54, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help restoring truncated discography

Hello,

regarding this page: [1]

I noticed that someone edited avant-garde jazz musician/recording artist Joe Gallivan's discography down to about 12 recordings.

If you look at the Way Back Machine's last save of this page from 2016, there are 39 recordings.

[2]

I tried to select and paste Joe Gallivan's 2016 discography into his current wikipedia page, but, because I was unable to click into edit mode in the Way Back Machine, I was unable to make the list format correctly.

Maybe I should retype the old list into the current page?

Please let me know.

Aliciabaylaurel (talk) 06:19, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Vmavanti had trimmed the discography deliberately. I see that that you have now figured out how to revert what they did. (The discography now seems to me excessively long relative to the actual text of the article; and incorrectly italicised. But what do I know.) Maproom (talk) 07:56, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Are Translations of Religous Texts Secondary Sources?

Essentially the title. If I'm going to cite a translation (into English) of a religious text (originally composed in Sanskrit), would it be a secondary or primary source? Aathish S | talk | contribs 10:46, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Aathish S, a religious text is a primary source, whether in the original or in translation. WP:PSTS discusses primary, secondary and tertiary sources and mentions religious scripture in a footnote. TSventon (talk) 11:08, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Aathish S Primary. WP:RSPSCRIPTURE may be of help. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:10, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Watch changes to category contents

How does one watch changes to category contents? I’ve added a few categories to my watchlist, but it only shows changes to the page itself. - Aussie Article Writer (talk) 12:04, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Aussie Article Writer: You have to enable the "Category changes" filter. See Help:Category § Watching category additions and removals. – Rummskartoffel 12:17, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Rummskartoffel: I just fixed a ref error in Agriculture in the United States, but my category changes filter doesn't show any change in Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors. Do you know what I'm doing wrong? - Aussie Article Writer (talk) 12:49, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Aussie Article Writer: Sorry, no idea. All or most of your other edits show up there; I don't see any good reason why that one shouldn't. – Rummskartoffel 13:40, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DYK article has mistitled illustration

The DYK article Insect flight is illustrated by a diagram (GIF) of 'direct flight' as it occurs in dragonflies. The illustration appears to agree with the description in the article. However, the image is actually titled File:Indirect flight in insects.gif and therefore contradicts the article. I have noted this on the image's discussion page, but have posted here as I have no idea who might be watching the image page.--Verbarson (talk) 14:49, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Curious filename. However, the image does indeed show direct flight (the muscles attaching directly to the wings and moving only them), so the text and image as displayed are correct. Clearly the filename needs to be fixed on Commons (and then updated over here) to reflect its content. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:16, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Article deletion

Hi, The below wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_methods describes in detail about different ways a person can commit suicide. The page is easily accessible, and anyone vulnerable can easily put their life in danger, following any of the suicide options elaborated here. The page must be removed asap for public safety

See WP:NOTCENSORED. The article talk page also has some discussion and links to previous deletion requests. RudolfRed (talk) 16:41, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) On Talk:Suicide methods, the second-from-bottom box at the top of the page lists nine previous efforts to delete the artice, mainly for concerns like yours. You can look at those deletion discussions, along with some of the discussions currently on the talk page, to get a sense of why the article remains on Wikipedia and is unlikely to be removed. add a surname

Welcome to Wikipedia. What are you trying to add, and where? RudolfRed (talk) 17:16, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Christopher87292: I see you are working on some drafts. Moze_(surname) has been approved and is now in main space. Draft:Di Moze has been declined due to lack of sources. Keep working at it. Im trying to add the surnames "Moze" and "Di Moze" under the category of: italian-language surnames (surnameshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Italian-language_surnames). Im not sure if I have to contact someone to add the surnames or do I do it on my own and if so how do I do it? @Christopher87292: Thanks for explaining. That category is already on the article. My understanding is that we don't put categories on drafts, but the category can be added if the draft is approved. RudolfRed (talk) 20:05, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Editing article with prior asking in the Talk section of article

Hi, I was wondering if I don't receive a response from anybody regarding an edit I want to make, am I authorized to make that change? If so, how long do I need to wait for a response before publishing my changes to the article? Also, can other authors reverse my edit after their period to answer my question expires or they must first obtain approval in the talk section to reverse my edit? Sincerely, LukeA1 (talk) 21:59, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@LukeA1: I assume this is about Talk:Adolf Hitler. If no one responds to the discussion, it is implied to have consensus per WP:SILENT. It is the weakest form of consensus, though, so if someone comes and makes a reversion, you should start a discussion with them on the talk page. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 22:09, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Tenryuu: Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, this was regarding Talk:Adolf Hitler. Do you maybe know how long do I need to wait to apply the WP:SILENT rule? If there isn't a fixed time period, would 48 hours suffice for an article where there are plenty contributors? LukeA1 (talk) 22:23, 7 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
