Mississauga Transit (MT) is the city of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada's public transportation operation.

The city's Transportation and Works department is in charge of its operation. MT only operates buses, but as part of the Greater Toronto Area, is connected to commuter rail with GO Transit. The system also connects with Brampton Transit to the north, Oakville Transit to the west, and the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to the east, including the Islington and Kipling subway stations on the Bloor-Danforth line. Mississauga Transit is a member of the Canadian Urban Transit Association.

History

MT was first operated by Travelways Limited as Mississauga Transit Systems with 4 buses in 1969, but it was acquired by the city's newly formed Mississauga Transit in 1974, incorporating the former towns of Mississauga, Port Credit and Streetsville. Services began on November 1 1973.

It later acquired routes, formerly operated by others such as;

Currently, the Mississauga Transit is a primary source of transportation for seniors living alone, high school students, and the unemployed. Since the introduction of the MT, high school students in Mississauga have called the system 'the TTC', which is the Toronto Public Transit. Though the TTC and the MT are different organizations, Mississaugian students use the phrase 'TTC' to mean 'Mississauga Transit'.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)

In 2007 Mississauga received federal funding for its long awaited BRT line, the Mississauga Transitway. This line will be built alongside Highway 403, which passes through the City Centre. It will connect to Toronto and Pearson Airport at its terminus point, Renforth Dr. Completion of the BRT route is expected to take place in 2012. GO Transit will also be using the BRT roadway for its BRT plan.

Accessibility

Mississauga Transit operates many low floor, wheelchair accessible buses. A separate transit service for the disabled, called Transhelp, is operated by the Peel Regional Municipality.

Schedules

Mississauga Transit's paper Ride Schedule ended in 2004 and all schedules from 2005 onward were viewed from their system's website only.

Mississauga Transit provides an up-to-date bus schedule via their CityLink telephone service. MT has released a schedule finder on their website, called Click 'n Ride with information specific to each bus stop in November 2005.
