I have a problem with your definition of Agnostic. I was seven years old when I accepted the definition as my belief. That was 45 years ago and at that time the definition I read and took to heart said that an agnostic was a person who BELEVED in a Higher power ( something higher than Human) but did not believe in or condone any organized religion. Later in life a Phd in theology explained to me that that was then in fact my religion, which I couldn't argue with but which doesn't change the fact that I self describe myself as "Agnostic" defining it as a person who believes in a higher power but not in organized religion. If Wikipedia doesn't define my belief structure as agnostic, then what would Wikipedia define it as?

P.S. I believe Jesus could be defined as Agnostic if it weren't for the fact that he didn't believe in a higher power, he claimed to have personal knowledge of its existence. I believe Jesus lived (Human), I don't presume any relation he claims to of had with any diety. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.252.200.32 (talk) 00:28, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, we can't discuss article subjects here. The help desk "is only for questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia". Feel free to discuss the matter on the article's talk page if you have any suggested content changes for which you have reliable sources. However, per WP:TPG, please keep in mind that "talk pages are for discussing the article, not for general conversation about the article's subject. Keep discussions focused on how to improve the article". Good luck! --76.189.111.199 (talk) 00:34, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, published reliable sources are critical to Wikipedia. I have never seen a source which used your definition, and lots which use Wikipedia's definition, so I don't think you would get support for a change. I don't know whether there is a term for your belief. That question would belong at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:55, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I want to know more about a topic and i came here to see if i could find it. It is not a topic and i would love to know more about it. I searched around the site for a good hour, looking for a button to suggest a topic that hopefully someone would write about. Is that a thing on this site, or am I out of luck? 174.55.63.62 (talk) 01:11, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Look at WP:RA. That's the place to suggest new articles. But, only things that are notable get articles, so its possible what you're looking for doesn't qualify. RudolfRed (talk) 01:23, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

can a lawyer if he changes the contents of a will be charged for doing so?

That will depend on the laws of where you lived or where the lawyer works. You can try asking at the reference desk, if you provide more info, but the answer will only be in general terms. We can't give legal advice. RudolfRed (talk) 02:16, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

simple question - how do i get rid of the drop down list on the search box? It's suddenly reappeared after years of using wiki and now i can't get rid of it.

Go to your preferences page, under the search section check the box to disable AJAX suggestions. RudolfRed (talk) 02:46, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Morgan Freeman's daughter not wife in that picture

The woman attending the Academy Awards with Freeman is not his wife, it is his daughter. Please change it. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.30.6.159 (talk) 01:57, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Done. I have corrected the caption in the article and on the image info page. That image is a crop of a bigger image that does include his wife.--ukexpat (talk) 02:45, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

oddity in Special:Search

When I do a search for "talk utc" in the Special:Search page with the default namespaces checked (including article) it returns nothing. However if I limit the search to only the article namespace, it does give me results. Why should reducing the namespaces increase the number of matches? (Note, I'm searching for this to find places where people have signed incorrectly on articles.Naraht (talk) 02:01, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not seeing this. Here you've added quotes around "talk utc" - did you search with or without the quotes? -- John of Reading (talk) 08:18, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see what Naraht is talking about, but I don't know why it's happening. To replicate this you have to click the "Advanced" tab from Special:Search and then enter "talk utc" without quotes into the search field. If only "(Article)" is ticked then results show, but if any other boxes are ticked in addition then no results show.
The same result can also be seen if you switch from "Content pages" (the default setting at Special:Search) to "Everything". Presumably "Everything" should cover "Content pages" too, yet whereas "Content pages" gives search results, "Everything" gives no results. -Thibbs (talk) 08:53, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thibbs, thank you. That is *exactly* what I am talking about.Naraht (talk) 15:31, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Noob Under Attack by an Old Pro

I'm new to the game and I think I've spotted a problem with an article but each time I make a change or propose a change, "SlimVirgin" undoes it with either no explanation or an argument based on demonstrably incorrect information.

For reasons I do not understand, "SlimVirgin" now seems to be accusing me of "harassment" and is threatening to contact the "admin".

I don't know what I did to earn this seemingly hostile and irrational response.

I'm willing to learn but I'm not being offered any explanations or assistance.

Please help! MalibuSurfKing (talk) 02:09, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You are not under attack, you need to read WP:NPOV and WP:BLP. Heiro 02:31, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

why has mad bot deleted my article

I spent hours creating a page about my great grandfather which you have now deleted,MADBOT wahtever that is. some computer program no doubt|?? and there is no body else even called his name let alone being defamed or whatever, I HAVE GENEROUSLY DONATED TO YOU IN THE PAST AND FEEL extremelly let down to be treated in this way. and wikipedia has gone down in my estimation as result and now has no credibility. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thorp12 (talkcontribs) 03:34, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The message from User:MadmanBot is a little confusing, but I think it's saying that you tried to recreate a deleted article without making changes to address the reason it was deleted in the first place. The article Bernard Andrew O'flynn was speedily deleted by User:Jimfbleak due to the criteria at Wikipedia:CSD#A7. If you disagree with that deletion, you can leave a message at that user's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 03:46, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thorp, you should fully educate yourself on Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines, which explain that "you should not create or edit articles about yourself, your family or your close friends". Therefore, you should not attempt to re-create an article about your great grandfather. Also, the guidelines instruct that if you are participating in an article in which you have a conflict of interest, you should disclose it on both your user page and the article's talk page. Good luck. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 05:03, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@76.189.111.199: The guidelines do not so instruct as you assert: "Also, the guidelines instruct that ...". In fact, the guidelines (currently) say

COI editing is strongly discouraged. [...] Editors with COIs who wish to edit responsibly are strongly encouraged to follow Wikipedia policies and best practices scrupulously. They are also encouraged to disclose their interest on their user pages and on the talk page of the article in question, and to request the views of other editors. If you have a conflict of interest, any changes you would like to propose that might be seen as non-neutral should be suggested on the relevant talk page or noticeboard.

So, please don't bite the newcomers. You may be interested in my own views on such help-desk behaviour --Senra (talk) 12:07, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Senra, I provided relevant information which was intended in a friendly manner. I'd suggest you re-read your own comments to see a much more applicable example of biting. The bolding and excessive wikilinking can be considered shouting and, therefore, uncivil. I'm sorry you objected so strongly to a single word (instruct), but I would have been happy to change it had you requested it. Perhaps I could've used a term that was more accurate. In any case, this issue was rather simple: Thorp created an article about his great grandfather and the guidelines say that "you should not create or edit articles about yourself, your family or your close friends". Pretty straightforward. In terms of the rest of the COI guidelines, anyone can of course read the full text for themsselves if they so desire. I chose to allude only to the ones which I felt were most relevant to Thorp so that he wouldn't be unnecessarily flooded with information. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 05:34, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Who gave the right to a bot to leave messages on a user talk page that chews them out for re-creating a deleted article? This can really confuse new editors which doesn't help the project. Should we look for a shut-down slam-dunk button and clue that bot in?--Canoe1967 (talk) 06:24, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Now, I'm not sure that's what happened. The message from the bot is confusing, so that was my guess. I see now that the bot left its message before the speedy delete happened, so I think I was wrong. It's still a little confusing as to why it says the one article was a copy of itself. I'm going to ask the bot operator for an explanation. RudolfRed (talk) 06:32, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The bot operator is very lucky I just got off a block for civility BS or my comment on her talk page would be far harsher.--Canoe1967 (talk) 06:37, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a he, by the way; otherwise, I suppose I'd have to change my username to Madwoman. Cheers, — madman 07:10, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

reference page numbers

Is there a way to specify a reference and assign it a name, and then use it multiple times, each time with a separate page number? Or do I have to repeat the entire reference, with only the page number changed? PAR (talk) 06:15, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Look at the examples here: Help:References_and_page_numbers. I think the rp tag or the sfn method would do what you want. RudolfRed (talk) 06:24, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Basically, you can use a References/Notes approach. The References section contains book information, for example, in Template:Citation. the Notes section can link/refer to the book in the Reference section and the page number listed in the Notes section can link to the Google book page showing the sourced information. See this article for an example of the References/Notes approach. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 11:38, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For the references/notes approach to work via the sfn template (do not enclose sfn in <ref> tags), ensure that each citation (in the references section) has a |ref=harv parameter and either a |year= or |date= parameter --Senra (talk) 16:42, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Problems searching multimedia

I am trying to add pictures to an article and using the advanced search multimedia setting but no pictures come up and the message: "There were no results matching the query." appears. If I try refreshing the search, the pictures can come up some of the time. Could this be a poor internet connection?, too many people on Wikipedia to ask for pictures (be that pictures are a lot of data)?, or did one of my roommates somehow blacklist this computer by trolling or doing some kind of mischief? Biobrit (talk) 06:24, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Biobrit. Are you searching Wikipedia for images? Could you possibly give an example of an article you would like to add an image to? That would give a start on answering your question. --Shirt58 (talk) 09:18, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I noticed that yesterday. Most of the time it finds nothing I'm looking for. I did some searches on "margaret court" and "ken rosewall", tennis players whose images I uploaded awhile back. margaret court seems to find nothing for me and ken rosewall finds some pics the first search, but if i re-search for 50 images it finds nothing at all. Wikimedia Commons search has the same problem right now and is very frustrating as i know there are a bunch of pics that I uploaded. Fyunck(click) (talk) 09:48, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was looking for sketches by Leonardo da Vinci for fun by searching “da Vinci” and I was going to put an infobox on the article on thumb sucking reflex in babies using the search “thumb baby” (note I already put infoboxes on sneezing and yawning). Thinking about it I was searching for a solution to this problem. I found that Wikipedia maybe reducing servers to save money, can this be why? On the trolling suggestion 1 I find it unlikely and 2 wouldn’t Wikipedia make some accusation of ill will coming from this computer?Biobrit (talk) 07:21, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture Sizes in Galleries

Wherever there are pictures on Wikipedia organised as "galleries" they are a bit small for me. Obviously I don't want to edit the pages involved every time, but is there something I can do (e.g. in my preferences) to make them appear bigger, by default, just for me. AndyJones (talk) 12:44, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No. The template "Gallery" image sizes cannot be changed using preferences. The size of images in the gallery default to a maximum of 180x180 pixels unless modified by the person creating or editing the gallery. Your own user preferences can affect the display of other non-gallery images on Wikipedia. For example adjust your preference settings
• Preferences->Appearance->Image Size Limit (320x240px–1280x1024px default=800x600px) and
• Preferences->Appearance->Thumbnail Size (120px–300px default=220px)

List of Jewish Actors

About your Lists of Jewish Actors and Jews in Sport. You have to understand something a Jew is someone with a Jewish mother, regardless of the father. If you have a Jewish father and a non Jewish mother, they are not Jews, some may consider them half Jewish. If you had a list of Italian actors you wouldn't include half Italians now would you. But Jews don't think there real Jews unless your mum is Jewish. It comes from your mothers side. Strictly! So I think you need to change all your Jewish Lists of people to only ones with a Jewish blooded mother. And why do you have a list of Jews in industry anyway. Are you trying to make a point? I think you are? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.190.250.123 (talk) 12:59, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The issue you mention has been widely discussed multiple times in the past over many years and probably will be in the future. Also, there is no "You" in Wikipedia as in "Are you trying to make a point? I think you are?" Per Wikipedia:Size of Wikipedia, the total number of users as of this post is 18,431,685. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 14:07, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Much of what you wrote is the viewpoint of some (not all) people. You might want to read Who is a Jew? to discover the others. There are other viewpoints. Talk:Adam Yauch § Request for comment is one such large-scale discussion on the subject. Personally, I don't like the religious/cultural categories, either. Throughout history, such lists have almost never been used to benefit the subjects. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 18:16, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Template for maintenance category

Resolved

Is there a template to tag a maintenance category for files that advices not to add files to that category manually and where I can indicate how files are being added to that category? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 14:15, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've seen this kind of thing done using category headers mainly. For example, Wikipedia:WikiProject Mississippi/Article alerts/Header includes a warning not to manually edit the list and it's transcluded in this page. You might be able to model something similar based on these pages. -Thibbs (talk) 15:09, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think I'll leave that categories I had in mind as is for now. It's probably not that important. Thanks for the links anyway, I do appreciate them. I might get back to it at a later point. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 18:08, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to join WikiProject Singapore?

I thought about joining Wikipedia:WikiProject Singapore. How can I do this? Or can't this project be joined like other WikiProjects where I just add my name to a list of participants and add a userbox to my userpage? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 15:06, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You may have noticed that there is no direct Wikiproject Singapore project page. The link you provide above actually is a redirect to Wikipedia:SGpedians' notice board. There does not appear to be a list of participants on that page like some Wikiprojects have, but there is User WP Singapore which will add you to Category:WikiProject Singapore members. Given that only four people use the template and are in the category, it looks like it's not well recognized.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:56, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to edit a page?

how can i post or edit on Wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dalton Wienhoff (talkcontribs) 18:05, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, in general just as you did when you edited this page: Click the Edit tab at the top of any page and enter your post or the changes you want to make into the edit window. You can click Show preview below the edit window to check whether your edit does what you want to do (note that the edit won't get live at that point). If not, simply make any changes necessary. If the edit looks good, click Save page and the edit will be saved. As a note, it is sometimes considered a good practice to leave an edit summary in the field below the edit window (see Help:Edit summary). For more information, you might also want to check Help:Editing and Wikipedia:How to edit a page (concise). -- Toshio Yamaguchi 18:17, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also it is considered good practice to sign your posts when posting a comment to a talk page. You do this by simply typing four tildes at the end of your post like this: ~~~~
Help:Using talk pages covers everything one needs to know about talk pages. Note that only edits to talk pages should be signed, not edits to articles. Note that, for that matter, this Help desk also counts as a talk page. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 18:25, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Procedure for referring to a person who appears on Wikipedia, but in another language

I'm preparing a biographical article in English on Pierre Schwartz whose descendants Pedro Schwartz and Juan Schwartz Díaz-Flores are the subject of biographical articles in the Spanish version of Wikipedia. Is there a way to attach a link toward the Spanish articles when their names appear in the English one?Lisaby 20:02, 17 February 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lisaby (talkcontribs)

Use the :es: prefix for the Spanish Wikipedia, so :es:Pedro Schwartz for es:Pedro Schwartz. Note that it does need the leading colon, or else otherwise it would treat it as an interwiki language link for the article where you are inserting the link. - David Biddulph (talk) 20:18, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you'd really want to pipe that link into Pedro Schwartz (which shows as Pedro Schwartz), wouldn't you? At any way, that's how those links are created. If the use is for within the article space, though, I generally prefer the redlinked way, as redlinks tend to shout "Hey, I'm about someone notable! Create me!" To do that, just use Pedro Schwartz (which shows as Pedro Schwartz). – Philosopher Let us reason together. 04:48, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to pipe you can shorten the syntax and use the "pipe trick", so :es:Pedro Schwartz gives Pedro Schwartz. You can, if you wish, combine the redlink and interwiki links, as shown at Help:Interlanguage links#Inline interlanguage links. -David Biddulph (talk) 05:09, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Antipsychotics

You have some horrible material on this page about Antipsychotics, including brain shrinkage and lower mortality and bad for heart. No psychiatrist on the planet thinks that and believes that. And they should know. You scare people because lots of people take them including me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.190.250.123 (talk) 23:06, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Whether or not the material in the articles scares people like you isn't really something Wikipedia is concerned about because this is not a censored encyclopedia. But it is supposed to be an encyclopedia based on reliable sources, so the claims that are made in these articles need to be properly attributed and are subject to removal if they are not properly sourced. The claim about brain shrinkage in the article, for example, seems to have a "citation needed" tag next to it. This means that if no reliable source for this claim can be located then it should be removed. I'm not sure where you see the claims about reduced mortality and heart problems, but if these claims do not have sources then you can edit them to affix "citation needed" tags. -Thibbs (talk) 23:54, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the unsourced sentence about brain shrinkage from Antipsychotic. The phrase "possible increased mortality (death)" had a source. I did not find "bad for heart". -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 09:17, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Incest in fiction: moving pages to subcategories where applicable.

The Help Desk is a place where people can come to ask about how to use Wikipedia. It's not a notice board where you can recruit other editors to make edits. I think the best place for you to post your request is either at Category talk:Incest in fiction (although that's probably not a very commonly visited page) or at Talk:Incest in popular culture. Good luck. -Thibbs (talk) 23:58, 17 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The photo caption of president Truman, Bishop Walsh et.al notes that Bishop Walsh is fourth from the right behind the judge. Actually, he is fifth from the left (wearing glasses). How do I know? I am his cousin

Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

According to the photo's information page the people shown are (left to right)
1. Miss Anna Lord Strauss;
2. unidentified man;
3. Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz;
4. the President;
5. Chief Justice Bolitha J. Laws of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia (administering the oath);
6. Most Rev. Emmet M. Walsh, Coadjutor Bishop of Youngstown;
7. Rt. Rev. Karl Morgan, Episcopal Bishop of California;
8. unidentified man.
The fifth from the left is not wearing a clerical collar nor glassses. Maybe you are counting differently. Counting from the right is more difficult, it is not clear how many photographers to include. Maproom (talk) 08:14, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Karl Morgan is 6th, not 7th from left per image here. That makes Emmet M. Walsh 7th from left, and I revised the article here and fixed the commons caption here. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 09:01, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removing Table Of Contents

Hi, is it possible to make sections of an article not appear in the table of content's? If you click here you will see the table of contents includes what is inside the 'This is the title text' box. How can I get the table of contents to exclude what is in the box?--Dom497 (talk) 04:11, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What you'd want is a "magic word", and I don't see anything like this at Help:Magic words. Nyttend (talk) 04:19, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So is it possible to get one added?--Dom497 (talk) 04:21, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You could fake section headers so they would not be recognized in the table of contents. For example:

This is not really a section header

though it look like one, huh? Also, if you use a lower level section header, say three equal signs, you can hide it from display using 2 --Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 06:21, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Although that has the weakness of missing an [edit] link. I don't believe magic words can be added by us, since it's a software thing; you'd have to ask the developers for that. I think doing that requires you to file it as a bug with Bugzilla. Nyttend (talk) 12:42, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was edit-conflicted out of mentioning "TOC limit" yesterday, but I think that's the ideal solution here. "TOC limit" does not result in a missing [edit] link. Its only effect is on the visual display of the TOC. -Thibbs (talk) 15:11, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My personal view on TOC_limit is that if you have to use it the article has far too many levels of subheadings. For most articles sections with two levels of subsections should be sufficient, otherwise it gets confusing and messy.--ukexpat (talk) 15:29, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In this case it would being used to hide material from the TOC, though. There's no reason the page has to be confusing or messy. In the scenario I'm imagining, the deeply subsectioned portions would only be used as anchors for linking and wouldn't show up on the TOC. There needn't be any more than a handful of subsections including the deep ones. -Thibbs (talk) 15:34, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks!--Dom497 (talk) 20:09, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Alter page

Hello, I was reading the page about Quinton Kynston school and there is a factual error. I was a very un-willing pupil there from 1964 untill I walked out in 1969. The headmaster listed left at christmass 1964 and his deputy, Caterling took over. He was head when I waked out in 1969. We had no school uniform and it was not a tecnical, it was just a school. I am sorry that I am doing it this way. In the 44 years since then I have become a Grade 3 Serial Epileptic with PTSD from my service as an attendant at the House of Commoms. I there for do not understand your method of editing a page and I can no longer spell. My E-maill addresse is, XXXX — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.148.61.50 (talk) 06:18, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I assume you're talking about the articlle Quintin Kynaston Community Academy? That says the school became a Technology College in 2001, long after your time there. That appears to be correct according to the sources cited. If you have other concerns about the article, you should raise them at the article's talk page. I've removed your email address to save you from being spammed. Rojomoke (talk) 06:37, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think the factual error OP wants addressed is that Caterling was headteacher from 1964 until at least 1969 and the Wikipedia article does not say that. I'll see if I can find any sourcing that will all us to add that to the Quintin Kynaston Community Academy article. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 08:30, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A quick search online google archives, official website did not turn up anything. The information is old, so it might not be online and Caterling might not be spelled correctly per OPs initial post. It would help to have a first name of Caterling. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 08:44, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've had a quick look through the school history page here but sadly it doesn't go into that amount of detail: it names names, but not all of them. I'm not sure how this can be taken forward. It's particularly awkward because of the merge and name changes. If I find anything (frankly not that likely) I will report back. Best wishes DBaK (talk) 08:55, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can you say that your business meets these qualifications? Thanks, Dismas|(talk) 11:38, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to be referring to Michel Aoun. I have no idea what tayyar.org is but considering that Aoun was an officer with the Lebanese Army, I'd tend to believe them when they say what his birth date is. Therefore, I have reverted your changes which, by the way, also broke a template at the bottom of the page. As for references, please see WP:Referencing for beginners. You seem to be referring to an infobox. You can find more info about infoboxes at that link. Which infobox you use is going to depend on what you're writing about. For instance, if you're writing about a person, you might use Template:Infobox person. But be aware that there are special infoboxes depending on the occupation of a person such as models, athletes, etc. Dismas|(talk) 11:31, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

i do not know how to edit a headline

i went to a site to find the results of the 2012 general elections in bermuda. the headline is bermudan general elctions. the correct spelling of the adjectival form of bermuda is bermudian. that is, there is an "i" in the adjectival name. (just like a person from canada is called a canadian; not a canadan.)the content of the article has the correct spelling. how do i edit the headline? Aminorsbda (talk) 13:29, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

When you say that you went to "a site", do you mean one of the articles here at Wikipedia? Are you referring to the title of the article, i.e. what is displayed in big bold letters at the top of the article? If so, then the article must be moved to its correct spelling. It would help greatly if you told us which article you're referring to. Dismas|(talk) 13:35, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the article should be renamed, as the articles Bermudian dollar and Bermudian pound also use Bermudian rather than Bermudan and the infobox at Bermuda also gives the demonym as Bermudian. Maybe all articles in Category:Elections in Bermuda should be renamed in this fashion. You can rename an article by simply moving it to the new title as pointed out by Dismas. You can do it yourself if you like, but if you do, be prepared to explain to other editors why you are making this change. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 13:43, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No User:Aminorsbda cannot move the article themselves, as they are not WP:autoconfirmed - Arjayay (talk) 15:20, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are a number of pages that will need to be moved if this is accepted; I'd suggest filing a move request for all of the in one place (maybe Talk:Bermudan general election, 2012). Whilst "Bermudian" seems to be preferred by inhabitants of Bermuda, "Bermudan" is widely used in English and may be the more common spelling. Yunshui  13:50, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The most commonly used is irrelevant. Under WP:ENGVAR, this clearly falls under the subsection "Strong national ties to a topic" (WP:TIES) so should use the English of that nation. - Arjayay (talk) 15:42, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
• For the curious, OED: "Bermudian adj Of or pertaining to the Bermudas or their inhabitants. Bermudian rig n. a rig for a yacht, carrying a high tapering sail, called a Bermudian mainsail. So Bermudian-rigged adj., fitted with a rig and sail of this kind" and "Bermudian n. An inhabitant of the Bermudas; a Bermudian ship; a Bermudian-rigged ship." whilst (confusingly) The Times Style and Usage Guide (2003): "Bermudian, not Bermudan; but a Bermudan-rigged boat" --Senra (talk) 16:00, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
• Even curiouser, many adjectivals are formed by the suffix -ian such as Lancastrian (from Lancashire), Mancunian (from Manchester), Novocastrian (from Newcastle) and, erm, Yorkie Yorkshireman (from Yorkshire). Bermudan would be odd in British English --Senra (talk) 16:16, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just as a comparison, a google search of bermudian on site in .bm gives 239,000 hits, bermudan less than 2000. I'm good with a change in the article names.Naraht (talk) 21:47, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for pointing this out. All the information in the infobox was added by an anonymous user about a year ago, and as you say the place of death seems to be nonexistent. As I haven't found a reference which mentions his place of death, I have simply removed it.
Wikipedia is the Encyclopaedia that anybody may edit, so you could have removed it yourself; or even better, if you have a reliable source which gives the correct place of his death, you could add that. In fact, if you have reliable sources for any of the information in the article, you could add citations, as the article is woefully lacking in references.

Best regards, Jonathan Smeeton. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smeeton (talkcontribs) 21:30, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jonathan, and thanks for asking. The answer is in two rather different parts.
With regard to a photo, Wikipedia is always glad to accept photos which are relevant to articles; but be aware that in order to be used a photo must be either public domain or explicitly released by the copyright owner under a licence compatible with Wikipedia, allowing the material to be used for any purpose, commercial or not. See WP:Donating copyright materials for more information.
With regard to the content of the article, the situation is a bit different, because of the requirement that all articles are required to be written in a neutral tone and not promotional: people who are close to the subject, because of their conflict of interest, are likely to find it hard to write in an acceptable way. While we would welcome your suggestions for how the article might be improved, you are strongly discouraged from editing the article yourself, and should instead make your suggestions on the article's talk page, for uninvolved editors to decide what changes to make in the article. You should also be aware that, particularly for biographies of living people, all information in the article should be referenced to reliable sources, independent of the subject: material from your own knowledge, or private archives, is not acceptable unless it has appeared in a published reliable source. --ColinFine (talk) 23:52, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I would also point our that the Jonathan Smeeton article currently lacks any independent references – the only reference is to his own website. Without third-party references that establish its subject's notability, the article is in danger of being deleted. So, while a headshot would certainly improve the article, Mr. Smeeton could also help improve it by finding a few such references, and mentioning them on the article's talk page so that an independent editor can add them to the article. Maproom (talk) 00:05, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Excessive copying

I have discovered an editor has been copying and moving text among articles frequently and without attribution. Some material has been moved enough times that I am having problems figuring out the articles from which some content may have originated. Other than warning the editor, what steps should be taken?Novangelis (talk) 21:49, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your first step should be to discuss your concerns with the other editor. Their talk page would probably be the best place.--ukexpat (talk) 22:05, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Then what?Novangelis (talk) 22:46, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are some examples of how to fix this problem at WP:CPM. If the other editor doesn't stop doing the copy-paste, and you've warned them about it, then that might fall under vandalism and you could ask they be blocked from editing. But, that should be a last resort. RudolfRed (talk) 23:38, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If this is about David Hedlund, then Novangelis is, I believe, right to draw attention to the problem. Maproom (talk) 00:23, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If it's not cut-and-paste moves of entire articles but only sections or paragraphs which are copied or moved then see WP:RIA. I have for example made dummy edits with edit summaries like "The edit by XXX copied content from YYY". PrimeHunter (talk) 00:29, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Deficient article

As per the community guidelines for Autobiography, I'm writing about an article about which I'm the subject: Ken Kalfus. The page, which I did not originate, could be more complete, more accurate and more interesting, if anyone wishes to take the trouble. Some suggested revisions:

- I never attended Trinity College. It's true that I don't have a degree; the last school I left, however, was New York University. Reference: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/03/22/books/it-started-with-a-vision-of-tolstoy-s-death-then-segued-into-a-first-novel.html?gwh=1245049D7B4BAD52B1D7CAF68CF3985D

- My first collection of stories, Thirst, is comprised of short stories that I published in literary magazines, including the Village Voice Literary Supplement, the North American Review, and the University of Arizona's Sonora Review, when David Foster Wallace was its fiction editor. References: already cited Salon piece; also, about the Sonora Review: http://www.sideshowmediagroup.com/?p=88

- From 1994 to 1998 I lived in Moscow, where my wife Inga Saffron was the Philadelphia Inquirer's correspondent. (reference: Times article)

- My story "Pu-239" was adapted for film by Scott Z. Burns and starred Paddy Considine, Radha Mitchell and Oscar Isaac. (Reference: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0472156/?ref_=sr_1)

- My new novel, Equilateral, is being published in April 2013. It's set in Egypt at the end of the 19th century; its theme is the search for extraterrestrial life. (Reference: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_10?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=ken+kalfus+equilateral&sprefix=Ken+Kalfus%2Cstripbooks%2C262)

- My wife is now the Philadelphia Inquirer's architecture critic. (Times article)

Please excuse me if I've violated some protocol by making these suggestions. I'm an enthusiastic supporter of Wikipedia and would like its article about me to be as complete as possible. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Walesspeed (talkcontribs) 21:58, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am continually blocked in editing the page "Peter Vettese" or "Peter-John Vettese". Please can you advise how to review the page — Preceding unsigned comment added by Violet Lushington (talkcontribs) 22:31, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

First, don't mark edits with the minor edit box unless you're changing something very small like a typo. When someone reverts your changes, instead of putting them back, raise the issue on the article's talk page. See WP:BRD. Also, read the guidance at WP:COI. Some of your edit summaries suggest you might have a conflict of interest. RudolfRed (talk) 22:37, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Besides the above raised by RudolfRed:
• You cannot replace a cited article with a new version that doesn't contain any reference.
• The new page is completely unformatted whereas the previous page contained correct Wiki formatting.
• Most importantly: You cannot overwrite it with a page that is both advertising and non neutral in tone.
And to parrot the previous statement: please read WP:COI as well. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 22:42, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody is going to contact you by email or phone: interaction is here only. If there is incorrect unsourced information, it may be removed, but information to be added must be non-promotional in tone, and verified by reliable published sources. --ColinFine (talk) 12:01, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OP's edits are here. The history being incorrect seems to relate to that St. Martinus University was was not founded by John Daryanani and that St. Martinus changed ownership in October 2010 rather than reopened under new ownership in October 2010. The John Daryanani information was unsourced, so I removed it. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:28, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do I find an edit that corresponds to an edit number?

Sometimes in a page history, the summary will say something like "Undid revision 538965000 by user xyz". But, the page history doesn't show version numbers, only time and date and editor name. If I know the revision number, how do I find which edit in the history that corresponds to? I can see the diff, but that doesn't show me when the original change was made. Is there a way to see the page history with version numbers included? RudolfRed (talk) 01:42, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know a tool to help but here are two manual methods to find the edit. 1) Your browser can probably search for the user name on the page with Ctrl+F. Or just look manually. Hover over the timestamp of revisions by that user. Your browser will probably show the url somewhere, for example near the bottom of the window. The url ends with the revision number. If the user has multiple edits then you can also look for one which changed the page size by the same number of bytes with opposite sign (see Wikipedia:Added or removed characters). 2) Click a random diff. The url in the browser address bar should end with something like &diff=536935949&oldid=536934926. Manually (use copy-paste in your browser) replace this with &diff=538965000 (the revision number). Delete the oldid part. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:17, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Use the oldid parameter. For example, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Help_desk&oldid=538964944, for example, will bring up revision 538964944 of Wikipedia:Help_desk. At the top of the resulting page is a box showing the editing user and timestamp. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 02:21, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Add a logo / picture

I had created "Singapore Indian Artistes Association", a non-profit arts organisation in Singapore. But Im stuck in going any further in getting the page fully done like most pages I had seen in Wikipedia and to load a logo on the right side of the page. The tutorials I read didint help me much ... please help. Advance thanks. Kevin Raja — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kevin raja (talkcontribs) 03:50, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry about the logo just yet. The article has some more fundamental problems which will need to be addressed if it is to avoid deletion. 1. It does not not cite a single reliable source that demonstrates that the organisation is not able as described at WP:ORG. 2. It reads a lot like an advertisement. 3. Was the text copied from somewhere else, maybe the organisation's website?--ukexpat (talk) 04:48, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mystery redirects

My Dog Has Fleas

I encountered "My dog has fleas instrument" as a crossword puzzle clue, with the answer "uke." Fine, okay, what's that about? I searched for "My Dog Has Fleas" in Wikipedia, and got a redirect to "Ukulele." But that doesn't really tell me a darn thing. Shouldn't there be a Wiki standard requiring an entry on the page to explain the redirect? Here's more info, by the way (I see that some of this is reflected in Talk, but shouldn't there be a Wiki standard?)

From http://www.ukeschool.com/ukulele/tuning/my_dog_has_fleas.html:

You may have heard the phrase My Dog Has Fleas about ukulele tuning. It's a little song, or phrase, that can help you tune your ukulele really quickly! Pluck each of the strings, unfretted, starting with the "G", and sing a word of that phrase to the note each string makes. (G)My (C)Dog (E)Has (A)Fleas! Try this little song every time you've become satisfied that your uke is reasonably in tune - it will become "stuck" in your mind. Sing it out loud, get it more stuck.
So, when you're out trying to tune your ukulele in the real world, you can use the "My Dog Has Fleas" song as a shortcut when you feel that your uke could use a bit of tuning. Let the song "play" in your head - and pluck each of the strings in the order that should produce the little song. Before long, you will be able to get a fair idea of which string is out of tune - because it won't fit with the little song in your head! It's nice to be able to just re-tune the string that's gone out of tune, and using the "My Dog Has Fleas" song as a "reference" can really help you figure out which one to tune, fast!

(Cross-posted at [Talk:Ukulele]) -- Jo3sampl (talk) 04:32, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Note the history of the redirect; it began as a redirect to Banjo before arriving at its current target. In general, we expect the connexion between redirects and their targets to be easily understood — either they should be obvious (for example: redirects from spelling errors such as Untied States, different punctuations like George W Bush, or diacritics like Pokemon), or the article should mention the alternate name. It looks like you've made a decent case for a deletion nomination. Nyttend (talk) 05:47, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Or for updating the Ukulele article to mention the term "My Dog Has Fleas". -Thibbs (talk) 13:25, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I've bumped into this several times before. Based on these replies and my own brief search, I conclude that there's no Wiki standard that applies. Still seems to me that there should be such a guideline. -- Jo3sampl (talk)

Помощь

Long posting in Russian

— Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.134.25.60 (talk) 06:18, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Centring table text

Hey, how can i centre the text of an entire column in the first table here without adding | align="center" | to every cell? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 12:21, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if that would be possible. What if you added yes to the numbers that you want to have centred? It would correspond with your use of no and TBA, and it appears to include a command to centre the text. Nyttend (talk) 12:54, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

On image in a different WP

Hi,

I'm trying to port this article from the italian WP over to the english WP but I'm having troubles with some images that can't be linked. This is the list of said images:

What can I do to make them correctly display here? Is this a copyright issue? Regards. Gaba p (talk) 12:52, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Most of them appear to be marked as "Nonfree copyrighted, and used with permission". However, that doesn't explain File:Gum25atlas.jpg, which is PD-USGov-NASA. Nyttend (talk) 12:58, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry, but those images can't be used because they have only been uploaded to the Italian Wikipedia, not to the English Wikipedia. Those files can only be used at the Italian Wikipedia. You can only use files which have been uploaded to English Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons here at the English Wikipedia. Sincerely. --Ushau97 talk contribs 13:01, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
English Wikipedia can link to images in commons.wikimedia.org. If they are Nonfree copyrighted, they probably would have to meet WP:NFCC and also be uploaded directly into English Wikipedia. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:03, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I figured it had to be something with the files not being uploaded to Wikimedia. I've asked the original uploader permission to re-use the files here. I'll wait to see what he says about it. Thanks everybody, cheers. Gaba p (talk) 13:13, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand what the Italian Wikipedia is doing, but we can only use files that bear a free license compatible with ours or are PD. We can't use images by permission for our use only. Having permission may be boot and suspenders to a fair use claim but a full fair use claim would be needed anyway, so getting permission for our use only, while they retain a license that is incompatible with ours, is fairly worthless.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:42, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So what are you saying Fuhghettaboutit? I can't use the images even if the original uploader uploads them to Wikimedia? Gaba p (talk) 13:47, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The copyrighted images cannot be used on EN Wikipedia, as they clearly violate WP:NFCC#1. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 13:49, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Couldn't the original uploader get a similar copyright license to use them in the EN WP? (sorry for all these questions, I still don't really grasp all the subtleties of copyright and such) Gaba p (talk) 13:52, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure how the Italian project does it; but here in the EN WP, we do not accept any kind of "permission to use in Wikipedia only" license. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:00, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, AFAIK you can't use any of them here except as fair use and I agree with Toshio that they would not qualify under the first NFCC criterion. Whether the original uploader uploads them here or you do is neither here nor there since the non-free copyright license is retained by the owners. You can always ask for a second opinion at WP:MCQ.---Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 14:04, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot see the OTRS ticket for these files and I don't know whether the ticket permits use on EN Wikipedia or not. If not, then the images cannot be used on Wikipedia under any circumstances. The images need to be released under a free license or in the public domain to be usable at EN Wikipedia. Sometimes images can be used under a fair use claim. Such images, however, need to comply with our non-free content policy, which these images never can, because they will always fail the first of the non-free cotent criteria. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 14:10, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, the original uploader has left a message in my talk page[2] saying something about an "OTRS ticket" (no idea what that is) He mentions that "under specific cases, not free images could be uploaded in local wikipedia (in this case, en.wp). Altough an OTRS ticket should be valid for any version of wikipedia, specific cases may have to be discussed in the local wiki in wich you want to use it". What do you guys say? Is there a chance I could use those images over here? Regards. Gaba p (talk) 14:19, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Did you not follow the link that he gave you, to meta:OTRS#Permissions? That page explains what OTRS is. - David Biddulph (talk) 14:26, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I had missed that. I read that article now but I'm still not sure if anything can be done regarding the use of these images here. According to the uploader there is an OTRS ticket concerning those images that should be valid here too. He also directed me to EDP policy which apparently is what permits it.wp to host those files. He's not sure the same applies here though. What should my next step be? Should I contact a specific team to sort this out? Regards. Gaba p (talk) 15:07, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh dear, I am an OTRS agent, and I looked at the ticket for Vela R2. I haven't reviewed it in detail, but I don't believe it would be acceptable for En wiki, and I'll be surprised if it is acceptable to it wiki. However, it is four years old, and we are a bit tighter today that we were then. I can't look into this thoroughly now, but I'll ask.
FTR, there is a OTRS noticeboard for questions like this.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 15:36, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ticket To Purgatory

I am in the process of updating the above story as in my career as a musician, actor, builder, writer, etc. I have run into other people who was at the fire or know some one who thinks they know some thing about the fire. I was 11 yrs old and went to the fire with my uncle, Milt Shaw who was Chief of Police in our home town of Farmington. I would like to know if you can use this true story as i will be sending it out this spring once it is ready to newspapers. Magizines, to keep this story alive. Even Inside Edition needs to update it. Please advise me on this or who to send it to . If one or more of the newpapers that you send your information to subsequently publish the story, we can use that as a source to create or amend an article, but until your account is published in a reliable source, Wikipedia cannot make use of it. The article National Library of China says that NLC is the largest library in Asia and there are three citations for this claim which all look relatively reliable. Yet according to List of largest libraries, both the National Diet Library and the Grand People's Study House are larger. Is there a way to resolve this? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 15:02, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

if the reliable 3rd party sources say one and they say the other wikipedia has to say both and refernee to both, wikipedia does not make the deicison on which is larger only what the sources say as long as there reliable. i had similar problem on another article where the reliable 3rd party sources said two copletel oppisite ends of the spectrum and it psychical impossiable to be both but the article meantions both in teh context of the reference it not for wikipedia to decide, sorry my head to sore to spell checkAndrewcrawford (talk - contrib) 15:07, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The official page of the NLC here numbers the collection at 28,979,203 items, so if the numbers for the National Diet Library and the Grand People's Study House in List of largest libraries are correct (which I haven't confirmed yet), then the claim that the NLC is the largest in Asia is clearly incorrect. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 15:21, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Without looking at the specifics, I think the usual approach is to acknowledge the differences in the text, e.g "according to source X, Location a is the largest, while according to source Y, location B is the largest." --SPhilbrick(Talk) 15:29, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)There are a few ways to handle this situation. First of all, Andrewcrawford is right that presenting both contradictory facts is often a good way to proceed if both claims are sourced by RSes of equal quality and strength. But the article usually must point out the contradiction and discuss it (e.g. "Official sources differ on which is the biggest X. Although the Department of Y claims that it is Z,[source] The Department of W claims that it is V.[source]"). This puts it in proper context unlike e.g. "The biggest X is Z[source] or V[source]". Another way to handle this requires the use of WP:LOCALCONSENSUS. Here the sources will be carefully analyzed by multiple independent editors on the talk page and a consensus will be formed regarding which is the correct fact. The incorrect fact can then be removed as according to the consensus. This requires an in-depth examination of the sources and a reasoned explanation for why one source is trusted and the other isn't. This can help to avoid problems where one otherwise reliable source makes a typo or mathematical error, etc. (i.e. an oversight, minor mistake, or mistake unrelated to the RS's field of expertise, but not an evaluative error). But this is a weaker solution as consensus can change and new editors can always challenge the removal of the previously determined incorrect info. -Thibbs (talk) 15:31, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also it should be noted that local consensus can never subvert broader consensus or the guidelines or policies of Wikipedia. It only allows limited editorial discretion. -Thibbs (talk) 15:33, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am going to analyze it further at User:Toshio Yamaguchi/Library figures. I found that the source provided for the Grand People's Study House doesn't actually contain the cited figure (at least I couldn't find it). The information in the article on the North Korean library merely says that "the building can house up to 30 million books", so there seems to be room to improve some things. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 16:01, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Annie Shepherd Swan

I think your information on the birthplace of annie Shephed Swan is wrong. According to Mildred Robertson Nicoll who edited the Letters of Annie S. Swan, she was born in Edinburgh, see page 2. This is an easy mistake to make as Annie in her autobiography,My Life, refers to her early life at Mountskip and it is natural to assume that she was born there. soon after her birth her father moved to the farm of Temple Hill near Coldingham in Berwickshire — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.157.133.65 (talk) 15:37, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This source notes that the Discover Scottish Writers series published by the Scottish Library Association identifies Swan as being born in Edinburgh. I opened an article talk page discussion here. I suspect that she was born in Mountskip since some people born in less well known locations use the nearest big city/place as their birth location. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 12:58, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not only wasn't the company named, but he was named the founder of an entirely different company. He may have only worked there, or he may have founded it as stated, but the citation provided no corroboration either way.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:26, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

When does a non-fiction book "summary" become too long?

I'm currently in the process of writing an article for the book Before the Dawn: Recovering the Lost History of Our Ancestors, and attempting to summarise its 314 pages. I'm only superficially covering the main points of each chapter and have decided to condense the book's twelve chapters into five sections. However, the first section (which covers chapters one to three) has already grown to four paragraphs. Assuming I give the other sections a similar treatment of three or four paragraphs, the summary might end up being 16–20 paragraphs long. I want to adequately summarise the book, though, and I don't think I could do that in under ten paragraphs. How long is too long? Hayden120 (talk) 17:26, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure that it is necessary or appropriate to provide a detailed summary of every chapter. Wikipedia isn't Cliff Notes after all. There is some guidance at Wikipedia:BOOKS and if you need additional advice, you should ask on that WikiProject's talk page.--ukexpat (talk) 17:34, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll ask the question there. Hayden120 (talk) 17:53, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you are writing for a Wikipedia article, you should find reliable sources that are independent of the Before the Dawn book and summarize what those independent sources write the 314 pages of Before the Dawn. In other words, rather than looking directly at the Before the Dawn book and using your own judgment as a Wikipedia editor, you should be using the judgment of the independent reliable sources to determine what is and is not important enough from the Before the Dawn book to include in the Wikipedia article. Editors with different/better/worse judgment than your own can come along change your summary based on their own different/better/worse judgment whereas the information from the independent reliable sources are fixed in time. Using independent reliable sources also will help you keep the length of the Wikipedia article in check. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 12:43, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mahatma Gandhi's name is misspelled in Wikipedia.

There is a Wiki page entitled "Mahatma Ghandi". The correct way to spell his name is "Gandhi". The reason that I noticed this is because I made the exact same mistake in the past.

Merci encore,

David Vardy Dartmouth, Nova Scotia Canada, eh? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.7.174.205 (talk) 19:08, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We don't have an article titled Mahatma Ghandi; that page is a redirect to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, precisely because it's such a common misspelling. Deor (talk) 19:31, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Out of curiosity, why did you think "Mahatma Ghandi" was the name of the page? The page history of the redirect shows that many others have thought this and added complaints.[4] I have never seen a redirect with a single such comment, and this has five. All were added while the page was a working redirect and people shouldn't land on the page unless they click a special type of link like http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mahatma_Ghandi&redirect=no. I wonder whether such a link is somewhere on a popular Internet page. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:58, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Come to think of it, some mirrors of Wikipedia have edit links like http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mahatma_Ghandi&action=edit. This would enable people not knowing how Wikipedia works to edit the redirect page instead of following the redirect to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Maybe a mirror is displaying a copy of the real article on a page with heading "Mahatma Ghandi", and an edit link to Wikipedia's redirect. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:11, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation help

We don't have an article about a 2006 German film called NimmerMeer which was released in the UK and US as "Nevermore". [5] However, we already have a Nevermore (film) article about a 2008 US movie. I was thinking of creating a stub but din't know what to call it. Help! Alansplodge (talk) 19:15, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermore (2006 film) for instance. Ruslik_Zero 19:36, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed so, as per Alansplodge's addition of the redlink to Nevermore (disambiguation).--ukexpat (talk) 19:59, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That was a stab in the dark - I thought I ought to check here first. Alansplodge (talk) 01:49, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
WP:2DABS seems to cover this situation. The Nevermore (film) article could be moved to Nevermore (2006 English film) and the the few articles which link there can easily be manually redirected. Nevermore (film) could be deleted, could become a redirect to Nevermore (disambiguation), could become a disambiguation page, and/or WP:DABLINKS could be placed in the two film articles (making it a disambiguation redirect seems preferable to me, with disambiguation being done by Nevermore (disambiguation). Wtmitchell (talk) (earlier Boracay Bill) 21:02, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure "English film" is really helpful - it's actually American. Whatabout if I go for "Nevermore (2006 film)" and rename the other one ""Nevermore (2008 film)", redirecting "Nevermore (film)" to the "Nevermore (disambiguation)" page? My new article

Hi there, I'm going to create a Wikipedia Article for a new Secondary School in my area. Its a Church of England school so would I put that in the article name?  thesimsmania  20:26, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hide/Spoiler Tags?

Wikipedia doesn't use hide/spoiler tags to diminish the size of articles with a lot of information. Why? as an example the jazz page has so many ramifications that could use it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.22.212.119 (talk) 22:05, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Does Wikipedia:Spoiler help?--SPhilbrick(Talk) 22:10, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In some cases, hiding text to diminish the size of articles won't allow article content to be accessible on devices that do not support JavaScript or CSS. See MOS:SCROLL. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 12:25, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As a general rule we prefer to WP:Split articles that grow too long. Selectively hiding some content can be confusing to readers. Roger (talk) 12:48, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding a company page - concerns.

Hi Wikipedia Admin/Support,

I have emailed (info-en@wikimedia.org) regarding my concerns with MYOB (company) and I am one of the editors from the company. Having no intention to gain any advantage I am happy to roll back any changes that are deemed as promotional.

Kind Regards, -Sanjay — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.34.100.2 (talk) 22:39, 19 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have just taken an axe to the article and chopped out a lot of unsourced stuff, promotional content and marketing-speak. In view of your conflict of interest, please use the article's talk page to request any further changes, providing reliable, third party sources to support them. Thanks.--ukexpat (talk) 01:37, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hello IP address. I have made an effort at a quick cleanup of promotion on the page as well. Senra flagged this discussion to me, because I have previously offered to help any PR person who asks for it; meaning that I will provide more detailed advice, feedback and instructions to anyone willing to make the time commitment to learn how to contribute here constructively in a marketing role.
If you would like to take a second stab at the article that is more compliant with Wikipeida's rules, please register a username and contact me on my Talk page. So long as you are willing to make the time-commitment to learn, I would be willing to spend the time to teach the appropriate way to contribute as a marketing professional. Overriding var expandCaption = 'show'; in MediaWiki:Common.js

Is it possible to override var expandCaption = 'show'; in MediaWiki:Common.js and provide another value instead of show in a specific location where I use a template using that function? -- Toshio Yamaguchi 12:53, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ideally, I would like to be able to pass a name to a template as a parameter that would rename the link, i.e. that I can define a parameter {} in the template markup for renaming the link. -- Toshio Yamaguchi 13:28, 20 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
