Satya Nadella (Telugu: సత్య నాదెళ్ల) is an Indian-American business executive, engineer and the current chief executive officer of Microsoft.[8][9] He was appointed CEO on 4 February 2014, succeeding Steve Ballmer. Previously, he was executive vice president of Microsoft's Cloud and Enterprise group, responsible for building and running the company's computing platforms, developer tools and cloud services.[10]

Early life

Satya Nadella [11][12][13] was born in Hyderabad, India,[1][2][3] in a Telugu family from Anantapur district[5][6] in Andhra Pradesh to B. N. Yugandhar, an IAS officer,[5][6] who was a member of the Planning Commission during 2004–2009 under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.[14][15] Nadella attended the Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet[16] before attaining a bachelor of engineering in Electronics and Telecommunications from the prestigious Manipal Institute of Technology in 1987 (then affiliated to Mangalore University), Manipal, Karnataka.[10][17][18][19][20]

After moving to the US, Nadella earned an MS in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee[21] in 1990 [22] and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.[23][24]

Nadella said he "always wanted to build things."[25] He knew that computer science was what he wanted to pursue.[26] But that emphasis was not available at Manipal University. "And so it [electronic engineering] was a great way for me to go discover what turned out to become a passion," he says.[27]

Career

Nadella worked with Sun Microsystems, as a member of its technology staff, prior to joining Microsoft in 1992.[1][2]

Microsoft

At Microsoft Nadella has led major projects including the company's move to the cloud computing and the development of one of the largest cloud infrastructures in the world.[28]

Nadella worked as the senior vice-president of research and development (R&D) for the Online Services Division and vice-president of the Microsoft Business Division. Later, he was made the president of Microsoft's $19 billion Server and Tools Business and led a transformation of the company's business and technology culture from client services to cloud infrastructure and services. He has been credited[by whom?] for helping bring Microsoft's database, Windows Server and developer tools to its Azure cloud. The revenue from Cloud Services grew to $20.3 billion in June 2013 from $16.6 billion when he took over in 2011.[29]

Nadella's 2013 base salary is nearly $700,000, for a total compensation, with stock bonuses, of $7.6 million.[30] Satya Nadella played a major role in Microsoft's transition to cloud computing.[31]

On 4 February 2014, Nadella was announced as the new CEO of Microsoft,[8][9] the third chief executive in the company's history.[34][35][36][37]

Personal life

In 1992, Nadella married Anupama, daughter of his father's IAS batchmate, K.R. Venugopal.[38] They have three children, a son and two daughters, and live in Bellevue, Washington.[3][39]

Nadella is an avid reader of American and Indian poetry,[27] and is fond of the game of cricket, his passion growing up, having played on his school team. He mentioned learning leadership and teamwork from cricket.[3]
