Dear carrite, Please forgive me if I mis-step here, but I am overwhelmed and humbled at the work you did on fleshing out (oh, what a wrong metaphor that is in this context!) the wiki persona on me. I'd stepped away, having realized enough about what I don't know to see I shouldn't mess with anything, and learned enough to appreciate a kind of vital, but messy elegance to edge of the hive mind process that Wiki is, but I have been getting many messages and emails, and this morning, someone told me that you and some others had done this and that I should go look. This person also said you were a tireless defender of virtual integrity, and that they had full faith in you, and had worked with you on many controversies, and I see on your page all kinds of stars and what appear to be thanks and at-a-boys from people who understand this landscape and appreciate things you have done. So I want to say thank you, a well. I'm pretty astonished at what I have learned, and most certainly will be writing about this. It's a kind of landscape, I see, and it's one lens into human dynamics and systems. I am also bemused about the persona of me that is developing on the Wiki page. How the flotsam and jetsam of a person's life, work, scholarship on the ocean of the virtual world can be coalesced, and what it begins to look like. I am sure I will think about this a long while and also write about it.

Also, I am interested in the handshake between "authority control" and the more mutable, changeling process of Wiki.

And also, the page itself may yield some great poem prompts, even titles.

Okay, so I also need to ask something: what if I have seen a couple inexactitudes or omissions, that in my world, would be glaring (like awards that are more "significant (nothing is significant in poetry in the US!!, the subject of a couple of my poems in my most recent book, actually)" than ones you generously mentioned, and so should, or that I still teach at Ramapo, etc. I have a list that I will stick in here, with faith that if you think they are relevant--and assuming you are willing to dedicate more time to what I can only imagine was hours of work on this--you might adjust or add, or if you see me mentioning things that still reflect my non-understanding of the whole thing, that you'll simply ignore them.

Either way, thank you so much. Truly. I'd figured it didn't matter if the page got deleted, but now that I see it today, with all the work others, and apparently mostly you, I hope it is not deleted (though I also don't think I merit such a page, unless we were to agree that as the internet is going, that all of us might have such thorough pages someday [although that raises a whole philosophical concern. Who would want everything they ever said or did linked to a page? What would that mean if the age of surveillance became the age of archived living?]) because people have done so much for it.

I’m guessing you don’t want that up yet—trying to understand how this works—until there are reviews or comments about it, is that right? Both anthologies, the one on Dunn and the one on race, would be considered scholarly contributions or probably criticism rather than “chapbooks and other…” as chapbooks tend to be small projects of one’s own work, and the anthologies are years long projects (the Dunn one took over 6 years from inception to publication), editorial conception, solicitation, working with contributors, editing and shaping their ideas and writing, curating the assemblage, working with the press, indexing, etc.

--Among a number of themes in my work—you correctly identify gender and masculinity for example, but linguistics itself (Speech Acts), the hybrid border between poetry and prose, and also ecopoetics is there, too: there are many poems in which the ocean or marine life figure in. And, too, the class issues of the Jersey shore.

--I also wrote an essay on mirror neurons, poetics, and Shelley, which is out there somewhere, and I’ve written a number of long reviews on poets and writers such as Stephen Dunn, Tony Hoagland, Bob Hicok, and Andre Dubus III. Again, outn there somewhere.

--Influences: Stephen Dunn, Pulitzer Prize winning poet, was my mentor, and has become a lifelong friend.

--Teaching: I’ve taught for over ten years in the Peter Murphy Winter Poetry and Prose Getaway Conference, Seaview Resort and hotel, The Richard Stockton College. In Jersey and maybe the east coast in general, Peter is seen a poetry activist (and writer) who does a lot for the poetry community.

--Oh, and if I had my druthers—and this may be weird—but if there is a Jersey Shore category, that’s where I belong. I have lived along it my whole life, in south Jersey shore towns and now in central Jersey shore towns, and they figure into many of my poems. Panic, for example, has ALL of the poems located in different Jersey shore towns up and down the coast: WildWood, Ocean City, LBI, Red Bank, Asbury Park, Sea Bright. And my newest ms, under consideration with my publisher now, called Jersey Mercy, will have a lot of Hurricane Sandy related poems because I live 5 miles in from the water in one of the hardest hit Jersey areas.

Carrite, I just now went in and looked at the discussion about the deletion, the keeps vs deleted, and how that process went is going. I'm further amazed. And I can see you have been not just a major player, but the chief fixer and champion of my page, which does bleed into championing someone's relevance as an artist, and though I know you didn't do it for me personally, and are acting from your own sense of what is appropriate, I still feel compelled to thank you again. You noted at one point you were going to work on your deck a while, and that puts things in such context, how the virtual world and the physical one sidle up next to each other, and I wonder what the wrack line is there (well, I suppose that's where I was walking!), but you took the time to a huge amount of research on me, and thank you. Thank you. Hope the deck is coming along. We've been ripping and tearing our kitchen (my husband is a poet/writer, as well) ourselves, and doing it together has been interesting. It's another thing we actually have no expertise in though, but no one but us will complain!!

@Lmccullough — Hi Laura! I usually reply on people's pages but I think I'll keep this one on my own page to keep things together, particularly since the very high profile deletion debate about your page is still ongoing. Wikipedia is an interesting thing behind the scenes, is it not? Your deletion debate has been a perfect storm of about three factors: (1) the ongoing, heated debate about "Conflict of Interest" editing and your easily identifiable user name, which is what got the page nominated for deletion in the first place; (2) an intense and heated debate over the causes and effects of Wikipedia's enormous gender gap, which your piece got sucked into when you intimated that you had been singled out for reasons of your gender; (3) a fury which broke out when you (unknowingly) broke a cardinal rule of Wikipedia and "canvassed" supporters to come weigh in on the debate via Facebook. A typical deletion debate on a page such as yours would probably have about 5 people weighing in. Yours might end up with 10 times that when the smoke clears... It is important to emphasize that it is not a "vote" over whether to keep the page, it's a debate over whether the subject (you) passes muster for inclusion by the standards of the site's lengthy collection of guidelines about such things.

I'd also like to reaffirm what one or two people have passed along to you: the deletion nomination is not about gender, but rather about Conflict of Interest editing — the nominator being both a humane and progressive person politically and one of WP's most vehement, hardline opponents of COI editing. The issue of what a person can and should do to a page with which they have a direct interest, such as a biography, is controversial. I think everyone pretty much agrees that if there is vandalism, one should not hesitate for even one second to remove that. Simple, basic facts that are wrong can also be changed out uncontroversially. Beyond that, things get sticky. It's always best to have someone not directly connected with you make substantial amendments. Poets are difficult to "defend" in a deletion challenge; the fact that you have been interviewed so many times, in conjunction with the number of books you have published and the reviews written about them have been enough to "pass" Wikipedia's notability guidelines, in my opinion. It seems that is the emerging consensus. Interestingly, the very hardest defenses are those for career journalists, since their biographies are very rarely covered by competing news organizations and Wikipedia does not have any "Special Notability Guidelines" to serve as a reasonable metric for their inclusion. Poets, I have just learned, are also hard, owing to the fact that the journals and internet sources that write about them are small and comparatively unknown.

I would like to get a photo up to help illustrate the piece. If you could have one of your sons take a picture of you and then have him get in touch with me on this page, I can coach him through the very easy process of uploading it. If you think Wikipedia's deletion process for articles is confusing and draconian, just avert your eyes from the photo deletion process, which is about twice as summary and brutal. An upload by the photographer with the correct license selected is simple, however — as long as it is by the photographer and the correct license is selected!

Anyway, thank you very much for writing. Please do drop me an email and we can speak more frankly — these User Talk pages have many, many sets of eyes reading them, not all of whom are friendly (as you can probably see from the rude fellow that unloaded on me yesterday!) Help with Michael and Marisa Deleted Page

I'm very sorry to bother you, but can you possibly help me regarding the deletion of the Michael and Marisa page? I responded the following to Free Range Frog, but I think it would help if an experienced and unbiased wikipedia user could explain why the page is viable or communicate with him on behalf of the page staying. Sorry for the length of this....Many many thanks!!!

MIchael and Marisa deletion[edit] I respectfully want to ask you to back up some of the comments you made that lead to the deletion of Michael and Marisa's page. Can you back up your comments that say they are in the same place they were five years ago? That is absolutely not the case. Can you respect a sixteen and seventeen year old who have been offered record deals but have decided to stay in school? They are full time high school students with another full time job being a music duo in which they have been extremely successful. They are in it for the long haul and are not a greedy flash in the pan effort. They spent the last two and a half years writing and recording 25 new songs and are about to release a full CD. They play drums, guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, and ukelele and they sing. Michael took a course in the production language Logic at Berklee College of Music so that he would be able to record in Boston and send files to the producer in Los Angeles to be most efficient and cost effective. You probably noticed that their songs on ""environmental issues, and anti-bulllying"" have received national attention from CNN, AOL Kids, Parents Magazine, PBS Kids and many more. Other artists "disappear" for two years to write an album, why not Michael and Marisa? They didn't disappear and did some shows while writing, just not as many and they remained spokespeople for PACER Teens against Bullying throughout. They continue to write songs with an eye toward making life better for their teen peers. They dress appropriately and are very respectful in what they do. I would think you would commend them for all of their efforts and successes. You mention the 8,000 or so subscribers on their youtube channel, but you don't mention the 2,250,000 hits on the channel. They play some covers, but there are also originals on the site. The reason there aren't more originals on the site is that the record labels do not want them out in the world until they do the promoting. Many successful artists post covers like that such as Rixton, Timeflies even Bieber started that way. Once an original song is posted, the record labels can't use it any more. You do see that "The Same" and "You Feel Like Saturday" have over 650,000 hits on them and those two are originals. We recently took some originals down at the request of the record labels so that they can release them through their channels. The comment made right above yours is absolutely correct and lists why the page should be kept alive. You can see Michael and Marisa is posted on some of your wikipedia pages like Bamboozle, and the Waiting 4 U tour pages. Now on those pages the links lead nowhere. People are curious who the acts are who played at these events. I promise you that Michael and Marisa have done a lot in the last five years, but drop out of school to run to be rock stars is not their style. Marisa is applying to college now and both Michael and Marisa's first desire is to be role models for other teens by speaking to them through their music. Even when 5,000+ people line up to meet them after a show, they stay and sign cards and post for photos with every single one of them so as not to let them down. Please excuse the mistakes made in editing, posting and trying to update the article as well as comments posted on the deletion page. Posting on Wikipedia is very tricky for the novice and Michael and Marisa should not be penalized because of adults who do such things as google how to post correctly and then get reprimanded for trying to do things correctly. I am a rule follower and googled who knows how to edit Wikipedia so that I would not make further errors posting. I did not pay anyone anything by the way, I just emailed a question and posted the response so that all would be above board and honest. I wanted to show the recommended way to rectify the problem and that I was following the recommendation. I couldn't even sign entries correctly because I couldn't find the squiggle to make the four squiggles needed before a signature. Now our page is deleted. The artist is very deserving of the page and that is very clear from their monumental accomplishments. Would you recommend and take steps for the page be reinstated? Would you research further the work they have done with A Beautiful Live Foundation? Did you know that they are working with that organization to stream live concerts into all Chilrden's Hospital's across the U.S.? Please call me so that I can further answer your questions and comments. I mean this in a very respectful way and I hope that you will take over this situation and repair the damage that has been done. Do you think that they deserve to have people google their name and then see as the second listing a deleted wikipedia page? They earned the privilege of having the page and it's just not right that it has been deleted. Thanks for taking the time to read this and if necessary research further. If it is helpful, I can send you a list of the 300 shows they have done nationwide at recognized events and venues. I can send you the Bamboozle footage or any other footage so you can see crowds in the thousands. Juliancolton -Presumably I have explained my very real concerns about the lack of a talk link. The obstinate refusal to launch a user page when one was very strongly suggested to him by a nominator indicates his personal sense of priorities — style over substance. One might argue that with 15% of contributions to mainspace, this is to be expected. I don't give a fuck about being a "tough guy" or trying to "scare" anonymous weenies with sensitive dispositions, but I do give a fuck about potentially bad administrators being voted in because RFA has had a dearth of candidates for the last six weeks. An arbitration case with regards to the Banning Policy, has now closed and the final decision is available at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

For actions discussed within this case, as well as past history of disruption for which he has been sanctioned, Tarc (talk · contribs) is subject to an indefinite editing restriction. Tarc may not edit any administrative noticeboards, nor User talk:Jimbo Wales, aside from the normal exceptions.

Tarc (talk · contribs) is prohibited from reinstating edits or comments that were made or apparently made by a banned user and were reverted for that reason by another editor, regardless of any exception to the applicable policy that might otherwise apply. He is also admonished for disrupting Wikipedia to make a point, particularly since he continued even after the disruption was apparent. Tarc is warned that he is likely to be blocked for a long time and/or banned from the project, without further warning, if he does this sort of thing again.

Smallbones (talk · contribs) is warned to refrain from edit warring and needlessly inflammatory rhetoric in the future. Further instances of similar misconduct may result in serious sanctions.

Question about the ARB page

Thank you for posting that section about gender identity politics. I was working on something like that, but you managed to say it with a bit more eloquence. I don't think you're supposed to respond to evidence in the evidence section. You state your case. There is room for debate on the talk page. During the "workshop" phase is when the debate really begins. Then there is a proposed decision phase with more debate. OK, because I glanced over CMDC'S "evidence". It's so full of misrepresentations it borders on heresy. Do arbs usually see through such submissions? I must say that sometimes I see a complaint at ANI and it seems reasonable, but others quickly figure out the truth of the matter. It is always good to rebut. The Arbs will have a predisposition to side with the GGTF regulars and against those whom they perceive as "trolling" the talk page there. The problem is, of course, that probably four of the five biggest instigators were GGTF regulars — no names needed. Sitush and Corbett are collateral damage. You should definitely make a positive statement about what you felt was going on wrong there (with diffs) and to explain your own behavior. Once they take on a case ArbCom usually comes down with the hammer on someone. You're apt to be banned off all feminist topics, loosely defined, or perhaps worse than that, meaning a 6 month or 1 year ban, unless that you can show that you were acting in good faith to fight some wrong going on there... (Your user name will be held against you, by the way, so you might think about changing that for something less sexual. It's a little late in the day for that, but it still wouldn't hurt.) Well let me share a hint with you my friend. Every cable company in the USA has to obtain a franchise license from the local municipality. Every single one of them has a complaint threshold that when exceeded, they get massive fines. But the complaint has to be lodged with your local government. Most people don't know that. My jurisdiction has an online complaint form, and every single time I have an issue I don't even bother calling Comcast and file a complaint. I get a call within 24 hours from the executive response team and they run through the hoops to get the problem resolved to close the complaint. Motives

Hello, Carrite. I noticed your comments on Bencherlite's talk page. You might recall that in the previous "Fuck" TFA request, I took issue with a fellow supporter's assumption that "troll" was being used as a noun. (In your case, I was unsure of how you meant it. Now that you've clarified, I don't doubt that you were describing an action.)

I agree with most of what you wrote here. I just want to stress that the notifications were deemed a requirement of the article's TFA consideration. Various editors (primarily those opposed to the appearance of "offensive" material on the main page) demanded them, and Bencherlite indicated that he wouldn't schedule such an article unless that condition was met.

I'm not defending this as a good idea (because I agree that it wasn't one). But it isn't fair to blame Cirt, whose only other viable option was to not request the TFA appearance at all. —David Levy 02:17, 4 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Im just contacting you to say thanks for your interest. Ive replied on my talk page to your statement.I cant be any more exact because it all took place several -3?4? years ago. I dont think Black cab is the ultimate evil either! I think being in Australia he cannot easily get the wide range of NZ resources that are available in NZ. This may be a source of frustration to him-I dont really know. Im not sure which part of the wiki world you are in but the seasoned and reasonable NZ editor Gadfium hinted strongly to non NZ editors to be aware that there are people that take VERY strong (political? personal?)positions on Maori topics. Some are Maori, some are not. Pushing the "Maori cause" is a significant political/ social movement in NZ. Maori have their own political party. Some Maori want autonomy. Millions of dollars are up for grabs. There are about 130,000 million Maori living in Australia (about 20% of all Maori).

It is perhaps significant that in traditional Maori culture it is the norm to take up an aggressive posture when there are doubts as to the intentions of an outsider. If you are from overseas you may have seen a "haka" (war dance) which is the physical embodiment of this posturing. Traditionally Maori would do or say anything to protect their "mana "(pride, authority, prestige). Blackcab may be one of these people- I cannot say for sure. What I do know is that he frequently uses a major source that has been identified by professional history writers as having significant weakness. His response has always been to say that nevertheless it is recognized by wiki as a reliable source. In the modern history world, historians are concerned with why writers hold certain positions as well as the positions themselves. Blackcab recently put his hand up to being the main contributor to the wiki page on NZ Land Confiscation. I have attempted, with limited success, to add important information to balance that article.It is getting better. About a month ago I added a section -all referenced-that Black cab immediately reverted saying it was "unsourced,POV". Clearly it was sourced. The views expressed came from a wide range of sources. They may not be Black cab's POV but it seems to me he is thinking if the article as his own fiefdom-to be protected at all costs. I have a lot more information on that topic to go in the article which presents a more rounded picture but hesitate to do so knowing what Blackcab's reaction is going to be.

I must admit I do not follow all the ins and outs of the wiki world rules -it seems to be a regular semantic jungle. I do not have the time to follow all that minutae. My interest is simple- putting forward information that enhances wider understanding of a topic, putting forward a range of valid viewpoints. I do enjoy presenting new information by constant reading around topics.That's why my edits are all about content, not wikifying. It is amazing that we now have a far better understanding of "the ancient world" than those actually lived in it. Breakthroughs in scientific research have given us far greater understanding of the past now than we have ever had before. I believe it is very important that we strive to put this accurate information in wiki, as it emerges, and be prepared to let go of old ideas that are inaccurate or redundant. Many, many of the old ideas are not only out dated but now seem rather ridiculous. It would be nice if the age of enlightenment spread all around the world-wiki is a good start to this.

I do not have any more time to enter into long debates with editors on the above -I have a job to do and this is very time consuming and distracting. I don't claim to be perfect but I do claim to be reasonable.
