The Pashtun people are the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan and the second largest in Pakistan. Pashtun (also called ethnic Afghan or Pathan) tribes are divided into four supertribal confederacies: 1. Sarbani (which has Durrani, Yusufzai, Ghoryakhel, Kasi, etc); 2. Bettani (which has Ghilji, Lodi, Shirani, etc); 3. Ghurghakhti (which has Kakar, Jadun, Safi, etc); and 4. Karlani.

According to traditional legend and folklore, the Pashtun nation is said to have been descended from the tribe of Qais Abdur Rashid and his three sons Sarbaṇ (سربڼ), Beṭ (بېټ), and Ghurghax̌t (غرغښت). Qais also had a fourth adopted son, Orməṛ (اورمړ), who became progenitor of the Karlani confederacy.[1][2] Estimates of the number of Pashtun tribes and clans range from about 350 to over 400.[3][4]
