For all your hard work on Sega. Congratulations on finally getting it to FA! Can't wait to see it on the main page. JOEBRO64 13:39, 24 May 2020 (UTC) |
- @TheJoebro64: Thanks, man. You won't have to wait long; it just barely got passed in time for the TFA coordinators to have it on on June 3, Sega's 60th anniversary. Red Phoenix talk 13:41, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

- It's the kind of copyediting I really enjoy - when someone else has done all the really hard work of doing all the research and citing it and fashioning it into a clear story, copyediting is fun and easy. I also appreciate you jumping on my "clarification needed" tags. Can't always say that's been a successful system on other articles. It really is a great article to read, so congrats again. Popcornfud (talk) 11:29, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you and all who helped for the anniversary presentation, "Sonic the Hedgehog. The world's most prolific producer of arcade games. A rise that at one point had them thinking about taking shots at Disney. This is Sega, the Japanese company whose stories are among the most interesting in video games. This article has taken years of work, starting a spinout from scratch as it got too big, and work on various articles of Sega's games, hardware, and development studios to get the whole story. It's a fantastic, well-researched and highly refined article." --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:33, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

WikiCup 2020 July newsletter
The third round of the 2020 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it into the fourth round each had at least 353 points (compared to 68 in 2019). It was a highly competitive round, and a number of contestants were eliminated who would have moved on in earlier years. Our top scorers in round 3 were:
- Epicgenius, with one featured article, 28 good articles and 17 DYKs, amassing 1836 points
- The Rambling Man , with 1672 points gained from four featured articles and seventeen good articles, plus reviews of a large number of FACs and GAs
- Gog the Mild, a first time contestant, with 1540 points, a tally built largely on 4 featured articles and related bonus points.
Between them, contestants managed 14 featured articles, 9 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 152 good articles, 136 DYK entries, 55 ITN entries, 65 featured article candidate reviews and 221 good article reviews. Additionally, MPJ-DK added 3 items to featured topics and 44 to good topics. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 710 good article reviews, in comparison to 387 good articles submitted for review and promoted. These large numbers are probably linked to a GAN backlog drive in April and May, and the changed patterns of editing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! DYK for Crush 40
On 23 July 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Crush 40, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Japanese-American hard rock band Crush 40 created music for a number of Sonic the Hedgehog games? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Crush 40. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Crush 40), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Namco - Take 3
Hi again. After doing cleanup and expansion on a bunch of Namco-related articles recently, I thought it would be a good idea to finally get back to work on Namco, after I had barely touched the sandbox I created for it for months now. For the past week I've been almost exclusively working on this one article, getting it into shape so that I can kick it off to GAN and FAC eventually. As one could tell, it's considerably different from the older version that you had reviewed a while ago, both in size and content. While I obviously won't provide an exhaustive, detailed list of every minuscule thing I've changed, I'll at least list the major changes I've done:
- While I have yet to add it into the article, I've been able to (finally) confirm that Namco and Bandai Namco Entertainment are not one of the same, but two different entities altogether. Almost a year ago in the peer review I mentioned how I was under the assumption that Namco was dissolved and Bandai Namco assumed all its assets, but had no sources to provide for such. A few months ago I uncovered this GameSpot article dating back to September 2005 that says: "Bandai and Namco will establish a new subsidiary named Bandai Namco Games by April 1, 2006. It will absorb the two companies' gaming divisions and consist of 60 developers from Bandai and 1,300 developers from Namco", which basically confirms that Bandai Namco is not just the original Namco entity with a different moniker. Hopefully this will now determine the scope of the article and how it should be written.
- If I have to be honest, I did not take summarizing into account while writing this article, constantly adding lots of real trivial, unnecessary details that did nothing but bloat out the article. I feel I got a sort-of "reality check" when I made the realization that, despite being largely unfinished, the article was almost as long as the one for Sega (a completed FA, but I'm sure you know that already ;)). This made me realize how horribly-bloated this article was by comparison, so I was extra careful with adding new information and only added details that I consider noteworthy for inclusion (ex. Soulcalibur, Namco's relationship with Sega, its PlayStation-based arcade systems, etc.) This has also allowed me to par down or remove entire sections of miniscule details (I mean, Namco making toy phones is not something that needs to be added, and neither are explanations for every notable game they've made).
- To be blunt, I thought the writing sucked. Where as the Sega article flowed well and provided short but informative explanations for everything, the writing in Namco is choppy, sluggish, and not interesting to read. In fact, I hated the writing so much that I basically rewrote the entire article to improve it (something I felt like I'd have to do anyway). This made it significantly easier to cut out excessive details or other trivia, as I was able to get rid of them as I went. Not every paragraph has been redone, but everything up until the section on Namco's decline was rewritten and hopefully improved).
- I've gotten better at sourcing things. The version you've reviewed had missing references all over the place, and it would easily fail WP:V if this was a GAN. Not everything in the article is sourced (some sections are missing a few), but I wanna say around 75-80% of it has proper citations, all coming from reliable sources. I do think I might have been over-reliant on Game Machine (it was real helpful citing some of these more obscure details), but I'll let you be the judge of that.
- The article now has a legacy section! I thought about adding one a while back but wasn't sure how much there was to even add (I guess people aren't nearly as interested in Namco as Sega or Nintendo?), but since then I've found quite a number of retrospective converge on Namco from reliable sources, like Edge, IGN, Next Generation, and others. Most of the writing there I just added real quickly to just add the source in before I forget, which is why stuff like "Official UK PlayStation Magazine credited Namco as "the godfather of games developer." is just sandwiched in there.
I'm still working hard on this page and I've been listening to many of your earlier comments, so expect other major changes to unfold here. I am in no rush, so please take as much time you need. Thanks a bunch! Namcokid47 (Contribs) 23:14, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Namcokid47: - you can definitely expect me to take another look soon, I promise. I just have a bit of an important item I have a focus on at the moment; if you check my contributions, you'll see why. But I'm actually very excited to come back and have a look - I want to see the great work you've done! Red Phoenix talk 00:40, 25 July 2020 (UTC)
- If you ever take it to GA, you can count on me to review it. It's about time that game gets some attention. Namcokid47 (Contribs) 00:43, 25 July 2020 (UTC)
- Don't worry about it Red Phoenix, I had a GA review going during my RfA, and the article got attacked during it by a long-term abuse case, who turned up to the RfA to stir the pot a bit. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 11:43, 26 July 2020 (UTC)
- Oh, I'm not worried about it. Namcokid reviews quite a few of my GAs; I know he'll do a great job with my GA nom and it won't interfere with my RfA. I only had the first two days off, though, so I have to make time to take a look at his work on his project here soon and provide feedback - he's been doing a lot to try and revamp Namco, and he's done a great job of it so far. WikiCup 2020 September newsletter
The fourth round of the competition has finished, with 865 points being required to qualify for the final round, nearly twice as many points as last year. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with 598 and 605 points being eliminated, and all but two of the contestants who reached the final round having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were
- Bloom6132, with 1478 points gained mainly from 5 featured lists, 12 DYKs and 63 in the news items;
- HaEr48 with 1318 points gained mainly from 2 featured articles, 5 good articles and 8 DYKs;
- Lee Vilenski with 1201 points mainly gained from 2 featured articles and 10 good articles.
Between them, contestants achieved 14 featured articles, 14 featured lists, 2 featured pictures, 87 good articles, 90 DYK entries, 75 ITN entries, 95 featured article candidate reviews and 81 good article reviews. Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Immediate blocking of newbie user
Hi Red Phoenix,
I notice that you have blocked a new user who tried (very clumsily) to improve Wikipedia by making their very first edit on a page that I watch, namely International Bomber Command Centre. I totally agree that the username of User:IBCC Market should be considered promotional under Wikipedia's Username policy, WP:ORGNAME, and should be changed. But that very same policy says that "Users who adopt such usernames, but who are not editing problematically in related articles, should not be blocked. Instead, they should be gently encouraged to change their username."
Given that the user did not understand how to upload a photo to Wikipedia, it seems likely that they will also not understand how to respond to the template that you posted on their talkpage.
I would offer to help them change the username, but of course I can't add to their talk page because they are now blocked. Are you willing to reconsider and unblock them for say a week, so that one of us can talk to them as recommended in the policy WP:BADNAME?
All the best
Hallucegenia (talk) 21:33, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) @Hallucegenia: You should still be able to edit their user talk page; the block doesn't affect your ability to leave them a message, and in fact, the block doesn't affect their ability to edit their own talk page either. Additionally, Red Phoenix chose to implement a soft block, which allows the user to simply register a new account with a new username right away without having to worry about requesting unblock—this is explained in the block notice that Red Phoenix left on their talk page. If they wish to rename their account instead, the block notice provides a link to that process as well. As far as the username policy goes, I see this block as within administrative discretion—everyday we see a lot of organizations try to edit their own article, which is oftentimes inherently problematic because it introduces a conflict of interest, and I don't see this account as an exception. Mz7 (talk) 02:28, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @Mz7: Do I understand you correctly? Are you saying it's OK to block this newbie user because of what he/she might do, not what they have actually done? Maybe I'm wrong, but that seems to me to be biting the newcomers of the worst sort. What do others think? Maybe we should change the wording of the WP:ORGNAME policy, because it says there quite specifically, with bold emphasis, that new accounts in these circumstances should not be blocked.
- Regards Hallucegenia (talk) 18:10, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Hallucegenia: I do understand where you're coming from. Certainly I do not advocate blocking newcomers if they are "not editing problematically in related articles", e.g. if a user created a name that sounds like an organization, but the user has overall been productive and has not edited any articles related to that organization. This is not such a case. If you read the International Bomber Command Centre article, it seems pretty clear that someone affiliated with the organization edited the article to make it sound like an advertisement. When I stumbled across the article yesterday, the first sentence of the article described the subject as
an award winning interpretation centre
. The article goes onto use subjective phrasing in various places likeone of the most comprehensive records
andinteractive and immersive exhibition
. These phrases were added by same user who created the IBCC Market account, see Special:Contributions/2A00:23C6:61B9:DB00::/64. It seems quite likely that the interests of this user are not entirely to contribute to this encyclopedia, but rather to promote their own organization, and in general we should be discouraging editors from editing articles with which they have a conflict of interest. Mz7 (talk) 18:32, 4 September 2020 (UTC) - Hallucegenia, the block was appropriate. As Mz7 said it's a soft block so they can simply click the create a new account link. They don't even need to request an unblock. They do however need to declare their obvious COI. Glen (talk) 18:51, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
- I was working on a response, but it seems I have talk page stalkers who have done so for me as well. My reasoning for issuing the block falls along the lines of Mz7's explanation, that and the username suggests it is promotional, that it represents the organization, and implies shared use. The lack of egregious promotional editing in the user's contributions, however, was why the soft block was specifically used instead of a hard block, which would have been a gross biting of a new user in my eyes. That being said, I want to thank you for reaching out - I am certainly not close-minded to the opinions of others :) . Red Phoenix talk 19:00, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Red Phoenix Official
User:Red Phoenix Official? Maybe a coincidence? Jerm (talk) 17:11, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Jerm: I’d say that’s probably the case. I would have suggested attempted impersonation, but I checked the user’s Contribs and it’s not in areas I edit, so idk. It’s definitely not me; I don’t run any alternate accounts. Red Phoenix talk 18:20, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
- Ok, That's what I thought also, but I wouldn't be surprised if another admin assumed impersonation and performed a block. Jerm (talk) 18:38, 6 September 2020 (UTC)

Looks like block evasion
Blocked user Cedille Records (talk · contribs). Or meat puppetry by ChitownJuCat (talk · contribs). Thanks, 2601:188:180:B8E0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 04:06, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- I issued Cedille Records a soft block, which actually allows him to create a new account because the username was the primary reason for the block. He declared the connection at the article talk page, and so far there hasn't been too bad of COI issues. I'll make sure to issue a welcome-col template to ChitownJuCat, but we should actually be okay for the moment. I'll keep an eye on their edits. Red Phoenix talk 11:28, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- Got it. Thank you. If there's no discernible COI content we can remove the template. Cheers, 2601:188:180:B8E0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 16:02, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

- Took care of it. The vandalism at the draft talk of the vandalism draft was done after the final warning, so that'll do it. I would just be careful if I were you on the disagreement you and this user had at the disambiguation page - those reversions likely would not have passed WP:NOT3RR and both of you broke it. Of course, his block for vandalism squares that away, but be mindful of what is vandalism and what isn't, even by a vandal. Red Phoenix talk 02:41, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- Understood. In such instances I'm willing to take that risk; the first few edits I attribute to a new and likely juvenile editor. After that, continuing to add a non notable against policy without engaging is pretty clearly disruptive. Thanks again, 2601:188:180:B8E0:65F5:930C:B0B2:CD63 (talk) 02:48, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
Thank You, RP.
Dear Red Phoenix,
Over the course of my time here on Wikipedia, no user has ever inspired me more than you. You have countless articles that have been featured and recognized as some of the best, you are still active on the site to this day, and you have even stayed chill in pretty heated times. People like me that grow up on Wikipedia and watch others inspire them throughout the time that they are active on here. You had so many supporters for the admin nomination, it was unbelievable (about 200+)! I hope you won't stop creating good articles and monitoring the evil, dirty, and disgusting vandals in this website.
Thanks, luke loves editing (chat) 18:51, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- P.S. Can you help me throughout my journey on Wikipedia? I kind of need it right now.
- @LukeLovesEditing: Thank you! Where can I help you on your Wikipedia journey right now? What kinds of goals do you have, and what can I do for you to help you reach those goals? Red Phoenix talk 19:57, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- I recently had to get an article out of deletion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Louis_Armstrong%27s_All_Time_Greatest_Hits) and I need to get it updated and functional. Someone said it looked more as a promotional article without a lot of sources cited. Also, my goals include getting at least 1 "good" article on the website, getting a featured article on the website, and getting at least 1,000 edits. luke loves editing (chat) 12:46, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

@LukeLovesEditing: I've read over your draft, and I know where you need to begin. Let's start with notability - the core of whether or not a subject actually needs an article or not. Whenever you're looking to establish whether a work of intellectual property is notable (books, music, movies, video games, and the like), what will establish the notability is, in at least 90% of cases, the critical reception. How much have people who have an influence in the industry commented on it? So, for an album like this, none of the ratings on Amazon, Discogs, or eBay are relevant. User ratings people posted online don't count for anything. What counts? Opinions from professional critics or are influential in the industry. Articles about the subject by reputable people or publishing companies with editorial oversight are good, too.
For a music article like this, examples of notability-conferring coverage might come from:
- Magazines, such as Billboard, Rolling Stone, Cashbox, or any other major music magazine publication. You might be able to find some available to read online in the texts section of the Internet Archive.
- Company websites from said magazines, as well as from news agencies such as the BBC, CNN, etc. Check the publisher of websites and make sure your story isn't by a non-staff member who just wrote something for a website one day.
- WP:JAZZ#Possible sources might be helpful as well.
I'm not truly a music editor, though, so I might contact a WikiProject or I'd also recommend Ritchie333 as someone who knows much more about music articles and sourcing than I do. That being said: I hate being the bearer of bad news, but compilation albums rarely get articles. Why? They usually don't have coverage of themselves critically. That Louis Armstrong is notable himself does not necessarily mean a compilation article of his works is notable, as notability is not inherited. The master key is this: Always base your articles on the sources you find first, not the other way around.
On promotional tone - WP:TONE would help here. Phrases such as "Many people enjoyed this album as most of the critical reception was great. As you'll see below, there were good sales and many positive reviews surrounding this album." are immediate red flags. How can you say the critical reception was great, and how do you define great? You can say it received positive reviews, but we've already discussed what "critical reception" needs to be. "As you'll see below" is also a red flag as not encyclopedic tone, and again, "good sales" and "many positive reviews" are subjective terms. That's what makes it sound promotional - keep the tone objective.
- There is no specific set of sales, but it had a good reputation within the jazz community. The song most likely had a few hundred thousand sales, but we cannot tell since there is no website that specifically tells us how many sales there are. - That is original research, and is not allowed. If it can't be sourced, don't speculate on it. Briefly, I'll share with you some advice I received in my first year here in 2008: Treat Wikipedia like you're writing a paper at school. Cite your sources, don't plagiarize, and state the facts and be explicit when you're quoting someone's opinion.
Hopefully that will be a good start. I would start with finding some new sources first on your draft, and see if an article could be made from it. I can evaluate any sources you want if you want me to have a look. Put in some research, let me know how it goes, and how I can help you next. Red Phoenix talk 18:56, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

I just started a new section of my user-page (not talk page) where you can sign my user-page (kind of like an autograph book).
