Karolína Kurková, also Karolina Kurkova (born February 28, 1984)[3] is a Czech model, best known as a former Victoria's Secret Angel, and actress. Mario Testino said of Kurková: "The proportions of her body and her face, as well as her energy level, make her a model who could fit almost into any moment."[4] Vogue editor Anna Wintour called her the "next supermodel".[4]

Kurková is among the world's top-earning models, having earned an estimated $5 million in the year 2007. She was placed 6th in the Forbes annual list of the highest earning models.[5][6]

Early life and career

Karolína Kurková was born in Děčín, Czechoslovakia, to Josef Kurka, a Czech basketball player, and a Slovak mother.[7] While Kurková was young, she was made fun of for her height.[8] But after a friend sent photos of Kurková to an agency in Prague, at age 15, she landed a runway appearance, as well as a commercial and print advertising.[3] She later traveled to Milan to gain more experience[7] and signed a modeling contract with Miuccia Prada.[9]

In September 1999, Kurková appeared in the American edition of fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue, and, after moving to New York City at the age of 17, graced the cover of the February 2001 edition.[7]

Modeling career

The appearance on the cover of American Vogue gained her momentum as a worldwide phenomenon, with covers of French, German, Spanish and Australian Vogue, not to mention a first-time-ever series of British Vogue covers following in close succession. Kurkova went on to grace the covers of every major worldwide fashion publication- from W and Harper’s Bazaar to Numero, international Marie Claire and i-D. In 2004, Kurkova crossed over into men’s magazines, gracing the cover of GQ’s “Summer Beach Issue”. In her first few years of modeling alone, Kurkova was featured on no less than 52 covers. Magazines know that Kurkova’s covers will sell. Her November 2011 Vogue Brazil cover was the magazine’s highest-selling issue ever. This record was formerly held by Gisele Bundchen. Kurkova has worked with the who’s who of top photographers in the fashion industry, including: Steven Meisel, Patrick Demarchelier, Ellen von Unwerth, Mario Testino, Michael Thompson, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Irving Penn, David Simms, Steven Klein, David Bailey, Arthur Elgort, Nathaniel Goldberg, Elaine Constantine, Richard Avedon, Herb Ritts, and David LaChapelle. Today, Kurkova finds herself in the enviable position of being one of the most sought-after models for editorial and runway as well as mainstream and consumer campaigns. She has starred in fashion and beauty campaigns for internationally iconic clients such as, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Celine, Helmut Lang, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana/ D&G, Versace/ Versus, Christian Dior beauty, Tommy Hilfiger, MaxMara, Saks Fifth Avenue, Anne Klein, Victoria’s Secret, Missoni, Blumarine and Jean Paul Gaultier, to name a few. She has also made over 400 runway appearances for such diverse designers as Michael Kors, Helmut Lang, Donna Karan, Chanel, Roberto Cavalli, Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui, Alexander Wang and Calvin Klein. Kurkova was chosen to wear the $15 million jeweled Fantasy Bra for Victoria’s Secret in 2002 and she also appears in the prestigious Pirelli calendar.

In 2009, Kurkova crossed-over into the entertainment world, making her big screen debut in the summer blockbuster, “G.I Joe: The Rise of the Cobra”. She went on to guest-star on the NBC television series “Chuck” and “30 Rock”, CBS’s “Person of Interest”, and produced/starred in the 2012 German fashion reality TV series entitled ‘The Perfect Model’.

Kurkova has been honored for her impressive achievements, including being named one of the world’s “50 Most Beautiful People” twice by People Magazine and remains the youngest model ever to win ‘Model of the Year’ at the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007, and in July of that year, Kurkova was listed by Forbes as one of the top-earning supermodels in the world. In 2012 Karolina was honored as "Style Icon" at the Vienna Awards for Fashion & Lifestyle. In the same year she also received the GALA Spa Award in the category of "Beauty Idol", which was awarded by one of Germany's most popular premium people magazines. Karolina moderated the Energy Fashion Night 2012, once again proving that she's also a force to be reckoned with in the Entertainment Industry. In early 2013 Karolina released her own fragrance in cooperation with LR Health & Beauty Systems, an international operation company. Karolina was intensively involved in the creative process. The fragrance cooperation already earned Karolina a nomination at the 2013 Duftstar Awards in the category "Novelties - Lifestyle (Women)". The German Duftstar Award is the most distinguished award in the cosmetic industry. More than a beautiful face, Kurkova campaigns for the welfare of children through organizations such as AmFar, New Yorkers for Children and Global Youth Action Network. She has also done work on behalf of the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund and Wounded Warriors.

Television/movie career

Kurková made her film debut alongside Frankie Muniz, Harvey Keitel, and Amber Valletta in Howard Himelstein's coming-of-age dramedy, My Sexiest Year.[10] She played Courtney A. Kreiger / Cover Girl in the live action 2009 G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra film.[11] She was a guest judge on the fifteenth season of America's Next Top Model and fourth season of Germany's Next Top Model.

She appeared on the 2008 Academy of Country Music Awards along with Dwight Yoakam in presenting the "Top Female Vocalist" award to Carrie Underwood.

In September 2010, Karolína guest-starred on NBC's Chuck season 4 episode, "Chuck Versus the Suitcase". She played Sofia Stepanova, an enemy spy posing as a supermodel.[12]

Kurková appeared alongside German model Eva Padberg on the reality television show Das perfekte Model, a model casting-show similar to Germany's Next Top Model. The show aired in spring 2012 on German television broadcast VOX.[13][14] The show was canceled due to low rating in summer 2012.

Kurková made a guest appearance on television series 30 Rock in Season 6, Episode 9 titled "Leap Day" in February 2012.[15]

Kurková appeared as herself in an episode of Person of Interest, in a subplot where the character of Detective Fusco (Kevin Chapman) protects Kurková from Armenian gangsters. The subplot, which is interspersed throughout the episode, takes up less than two minutes of screen time and is played for comic relief.[16] Karolina is also a supermodel coach on OXYGEN'S "The Face", alongside Naomi Campbell and Coco Rocha.

Personal life

Having grown up in the small Czech town of Decin, 100 miles from Prague, Kurkova comes from a close-knit family. She credits her solid upbringing and unfailing family support as her foundation and source of her level-headedness, confidence and self-sufficiency. Married in 2009, Kurkova and her husband, film producer and businessman Archie Drury, currently reside together with their son, Tobin Jack Drury.

Kurková announced in July 2009 that she was pregnant.

She lives in New York City's TriBeCa district and enjoys courtside basketball games at Madison Square Garden.[9]

In January 08, 2009, FoxNews.com reported that Kurková suffered from hypothyroidism, which led to her unusual heavier physique and caused Kurková being panned by fashion critics, when she walked the runway for Cia Maritima and Victoria's Secret in June 2008 and November 2008, respectively.[17][18] In February 2012, Kurková said at the Council of Fashion Designers of America at their "A Well Balanced Life"-forum about her experiences with thyroid problems:

I thought I was going crazy. I was having panic attacks every minute and I didn't know what was happening, because I've been a healthy person. I've exercised all my life. I've always eaten well and taken care of myself.[19][20]

Kurková also said she developed symptoms of premature menopause and gained 30 pounds (14 kg). Dr. Robert McConnell, a thyroid specialist, pointed out that Kurková's case includes a spate of symptoms which "totality doesn't fit into one, neat little package".[19]

In July 2009, she announced she was expecting her first child with her fiancé, Archie Drury.[21] The couple welcomed son Tobin Jack Drury, on October 29, weighing in at 6 lbs. 3 oz.[22] Kurková revealed that Drury proposed to her whilst on holiday in Cape Town, South Africa[23] and they were married in 2009 before the birth of their son.[24]

Charity

In March 2006, Kurková received an award from the non-profit organization "Women Together" for her humanitarian work. Kurková was honored for working for the welfare of children through organizations such as "the Beautiful Life Fund", "Free Arts" and "Global Youth Action Network".[25] Karolína Kurková received the Atmosphere Magazine Award at the Madrid Planet Hollywood restaurant on December 18, 2003.
