List of Linux distributions

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by DrakeJustice (talk | contribs) at 19:33, 15 June 2007 (→‎Debian-based). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

This page provides general information about each of the notable Linux distributions in the form of a categorized list. General-purpose distributions are organized into sections by the major distribution they are based on, or the package management system (generally, installation format and updating system) they are based around (and thus are, to varying degrees, more compatible and similar). Other distributions are organized by the purpose for which they are designed or other properties about them.

For a more technical approach see the page "Comparison of Linux distributions". For a less descriptive list see: Category:Linux distributions.

Refinements include a fully automated remote and local application installation system and a very versatile backup and restore system which may be used with any writable media including a hard drive, a floppy drive or a USB device. Uses Knoppix hardware detection which - although detecting most hardware selection - takes a relatively long time to boot. Includes own *.dsl packaging system, but offers options to use deb package from Debian repositories to extend the system (use with caution). Uses Fluxbox window manager. See track record.

Derived from Popcorn Edition 5.1.8, it features clean and efficient default settings along with USBview, Dillo web browser, Iceweasel 1.5.0.7 with Flash 9.0.28, Mousepad text editor, ePDFView 0.1.6 portable document reader, and modified scripts to load quickly (autologin) and function on machines with a minimal 233 MHz processor and as little as 64 MB RAM. Support notes and further documentation included on project page.
Stem Desktop

Designed for low-end hardware (266 MHz/64 MB/install on disk ~800 MB). Unlike other mini-distributions, this one does not have its own install CD.
