This is just a reminder that Wikipedia:WikiProject England/The West Country Challenge kicks off today, with the first subject being Bristol. Please remember to post entries under your name at Wikipedia:WikiProject England/The West Country Challenge/Bristol. You are receiving this message because you are listed as a participant in the challenge.

Happy editing! --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:46, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

The first leg is Bristol. Names are to be added at the bottom of the Bristol page and articles listed. Please also make sure that you add entries you improve/start to the main list on the main page. There will be £10 to win each day for the most points accumulated and then the winner of the county crowned after three days. The overall winner will be decided from the points accumulated from each county round. If you're not interested in winning anything and want to contribute anything you want from the West Country this is fine too though. Best of luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:57, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Cuban War of Independence, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page El Cobre. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hi there. I've started a new initiative, the Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. It's a long term goal to bring about 10,000 article improvements to the UK and Ireland. Through two contests involving just six or seven weeks of editing so far we've produced over 1500 improvements. Long term if we have more people chipping it and adding articles they've edited independently as well from all areas of the UK then reaching that target is all possible. I think it would be an amazing achievement to see 10,000 article improvements by editors chipping in. If you support this and think you might want to contribute towards this long term please sign up in the Contributors section. No obligations, just post work on anything you feel like whenever you want, though try to avoid basic stubs if possible as we're trying to reduce the overall stub count and improve general comprehension and quality. Thanks.

I'll update that main list once the West Country challenge is complete though so don't worry about adding your entries for the contest to it!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:19, 30 August 2016 (UTC)

Hello. I've revamped the contest page into this, based on the new British model. Long term goal, but I've added entries since the beginning of July to give it some initial life. Please add anything you've done then this then too! I hope it proves productive long term. The contests are still planned, but will be more tools towards increasing bulk output in overall goal. It's a permanent goal now, and open! I would be grateful if you could keep a record of all your articles you do there, as I really think seeing the combined efforts will encourage others to create more content too! Please spread the word to the others, cheers!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:20, 3 September 2016 (UTC)

Please don't be a jerk! I can't do your templates - just fix it. Or should I tag the inaccurate information? Thank you. Johnbod (talk) 18:10, 18 September 2016 (UTC)

  • @Johnbod: In this example, you added the statement "Another large collection of 805 pieces of Chinese porcelain from the Ardabil Shrine is now held in Tehran's National Museum of Iran, donated by Shah Abbas I in 1607-8.", and said it is backed up by Canby, 2009, pp. 120-121, 137-157. The point of citations is to make it easy to check assertions in an article. Is the information in this sentence really scattered over two pages in one part of the book and 21 pages in another part of the book?
There are 84 different examples of the {{sfn}} template in the article, and 34 examples of variants of the {{citation}} template. Both templates have excellent documentation. The advantage of this style is that it supports citations of the source page for each assertion, with each source defined just once. I urge you to make the effort to learn how to use templates. Until then, rather than introduce jarring inconsistency in an article's citations you should suggest the change on the article talk page, preferably identifying an online source so another editor can confirm that the change is warranted and then do it for you. It would really be much better if you learn how to do it yourself – it is not difficult. Aymatth2 (talk) 22:24, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
Thank you! I will resist the very strong temptation to suggest changes that would improve your editing. The text is adequately cited from Canby's pp. 120-121; pp. 137-157 are catalogue entries for individual pieces from the group. Johnbod (talk) 02:11, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Nigerian women

I'm not running it, I'm helping it out with some articles, but as I know you've done a lot of past work for Nigeria, I wondered if you could contribute something? Nigerian actresses, filmmakers, singers etc. Sourcing can be difficult and challenging but I've managed to glean some material for the ones so far!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:25, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

I haven't a clue what is going on with this. There is no Abuko page either. Bgwhite (talk) 06:54, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

I was experimenting with embedding bot-generated content into an article, which worked fine, giving an appearance much like the present version of Abuko. The "bot-generated" text was held in sub-files like Abuko/botdata/Terrain and Abuko/botdata/Location, transcluded into the article with code like {{:Abuko/botdata/Terrain}}. That worked fine until AnomieBOT, BG19bot and Yobot came along and started flagging and trying to fix up the fragments of "bot-generated" text, and then Katharineamy tried to fix the flags and made it worse.
I suppose the bots could be fooled by wrapping the relevant text in <onlyinclude>...</onlyinclude>, then adding a reference list and a category like "bot generated" to make it look more normal, but I will probably not bother. The concept is proved. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:17, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Abuko/botdata/Sources requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. A tag has been placed on João Maria de Jesus requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

Hi Aymatth2. Thanks for all your hard work on this, esp. creating the lists by subject area. It's really appreciated. Lugnuts Precious bodily fluids 18:40, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

@Lugnuts: Thanks. Let's hope the articles really get reviewed, not just restored because they "look o.k." The priority is to protect living people from errors in their bios, not to restore as many stubs as possible, but I am pessimistic about whether that priority is accepted. Maybe there should be a process to review the reviewers. I do not know what we would do if we found someone had restored 1,037 bios in one day. Aymatth2 (talk) 19:00, 14 January 2017 (UTC)
@Lugnuts: I answered my own question: see User:Aymatth2/SvG clean-up/Guidelines#Audit. This meets my condition 4.
A project is launched to coordinate the clean-up, including guidelines for review, tools for progress tracking, ways of sorting articles into groups for focused checking etc. My main concern is that there should be safeguards against casual, rapid moves back to main space without careful checking. A lot of the stubs "look o.k." but do not reflect what the source says.
I can do the audit. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:32, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
No problem. If someone is mass-moving things back without checking, then that can always be raised with them directly, or worst case, via ANI for disruption. I don't think too many people will be looking at them to be honest, but that's another story! Lugnuts Precious bodily fluids 13:34, 15 January 2017 (UTC)
@Lugnuts: It just takes one rogue editor doing several page moves a minute to wreck the process. They will probably show up early and be very visible, but could wait a few weeks before they start, perhaps using a sock. If they move hundreds of pages before being spotted I see no alternative to mass deletion. "The revised approach has failed – revert to the original approach" is simple to explain and does not involve pointing fingers at individuals. Anything else is too complicated. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:14, 15 January 2017 (UTC)

I see that I'm the second one to remove the (erroneous) statement by Jimmy Hoffa that the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen was the first union in America. Far from it. No labor historian, he, I believe the honor of first union in America is given to the Philadelphia cordwainers (shoemakers) in the 18th Century. Running to the bookshelf, Foner History of the Labor Movement, v. 1, pg. 71 has it as the New York Cordwainers in 1805. There were strikes predating that. Regardless, Hoffa was way wrong. Best regards, —Tim /// Carrite (talk) 05:16, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

SvG articles

Hello Aymatth2. I'd like to review some of SvG's articles (water polo and volleyball mainly), add some reliable sources and move them to main space. I'd like to ask you, how can I move them again to main space? Is there a tool that helps you with that? If not, what should I do, what exactly is the process? I'll be waiting for your reply, thank you for your consideration. Gtrbolivar (talk) 02:52, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

@Gtrbolivar: When you are sure the article accurately reflects what the cited reliable sources say, and nothing else, just click the "Move" tab at the top of the page. In the window that opens, under "Move page ... New title:" you will see "Draft". Change it to "(Article)" and click on "Move Page". Aymatth2 (talk) 13:53, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
Thanks man, I edited and moved that article again to main space: Eszter Tomaskovics. Much appreciated. Gtrbolivar (talk) 14:45, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
I noticed that the draft has been kept as you can see here: Draft:Eszter Tomaskovics. Is this normal? Gtrbolivar (talk) 14:51, 20 January 2017 (UTC)
@Gtrbolivar: The draft has been replaced by a redirect to the mainspace article: #REDIRECT [[Eszter Tomaskovics]]. That is normal. The redirect will get deleted by a bot in a few days. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:55, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi, can you find anything for User:MichaelQSchmidt/Aika Tappaa to make it restorable without getting redeleted?♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:46, 19 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Created Tiroran and was going to look for info on Kilfinchen Bay but discovered that there is a wider estate of the name which includes Tiroran see here. I was wondering if you could create an article on Kilfinchen and decide whether to cover the bay in it or separately. Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon is a civil parish I think but I'd guess there should be more than one article. List of listed buildings in Kilfinichen And Kilvickeon, Argyll and Bute, the parish article is missing so perhaps Kilfinichen And Kilvickeon would be the best place to start and then decide if Kilfinchen, and Kilfinchen Bay deserves their own articles?♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:06, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

this is in the parish too.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:33, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Please note

I am a retired prof whose attention was called to the Taensa language article, because it failed to capture the cultural and lexicographic reality that this title expression has two meanings—the language spoken by this historic people, to whom some modern day Americans declare their ties, and the fraud of significant linguistic and historic interest that was perpetrated, suggesting a non-Natchez language existed that could be assigned to the people. I have tried to sensitively keep all prior content, but to introduce, in as scholarly a manner possible, the second connotation of the title phrase, and so honour the original people, and those that continue to go by this name. Have a look. The work needs some further effort—some material was drawn from wikipedia pages that were not fully sourced—but those last gaps can be filled in. And I am wed, neither to the whole of the material now in the article, nor to its current organisation. I simply believed that both meanings needed to be covered by an article to which general readers and native Americans (not just scholars) would go, and so put forth the effort so the two meaning are clear. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Baré people, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Xié River. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Thanks. Not a very important topic but sort of interesting, if true. Maybe the problem is that the article does not take the subject seriously enough. Mária Homolová

Hi Aymatth,

I'm wiki-gnoming some articles, one of which is Mária Homolová. It had been tagged with the BLP notability tag. I checked that she had competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics so I removed the tag, and added a referene. I wouldn't normally bother an uninvolved editor but it's an SvG article so I thought it better to be safe than sorry. Red Fiona (talk) 22:17, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

@Redfiona99: I am afraid you have come across an article that was restored by User:Beatley, and will probably be deleted. Nobody has yet audited the restores done by Beatley, but he seems to have done a great many in a very short time, so probably was moving without checking that they matched the sources. A lot of the SvG articles are on notable subjects, and many of them have nothing wrong with them, or relatively minor errors, but some have more serious errors and a few have very serious errors. Given that we are not going to recheck all the Beatley restores, if spot-checks show some of them do not match the sources, they will all be deleted. They are mostly fairly trivial stubs, so this is not as drastic as it sounds. In this case, you could move the article to draft space, carefully check it against the sources and fix if needed, then restore to mainspace. (The article says she was an artistic gymnast. Do the sources say she has retired?) Or just let it go and hope someone later starts a more complete article on the subject. Aymatth2 (talk) 15:41, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
@Aymatth2: Makes sense. How do I move it back into draft? I suspect it will take time to find a reference for her retirement (my Slovakian being about as good as my Martian). Red Fiona (talk) 16:24, 4 May 2017 (UTC)
@Redfiona99: I did it - just a standard move. At Draft:Mária Homolová. Aymatth2 (talk) 06:20, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
Thank you. I'll watchlist it and check when I've got time. Red Fiona (talk) 14:29, 5 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. The articles done may also count towards the ongoing challenge. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Help would also be appreciated in drawing up the lists of missing articles. If you think of any missing articles please add them to the sub lists by continent at Missing articles. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:46, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

restoration of articles from SvG clean-up

Hi, Could I request you restore the articles Valérie Gauvin and Onema Geyoro which were deleted during your SvG clean-up? Gauvin is notable per WP:NFOOTY having played 4 senior caps for France and Geyoro is notable per WP:NFOOTY having played 10 senior caps for France. You can also find all France caps here. --SuperJew (talk) 08:34, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

I am not an admin and cannot restore them, but you can start them again if you want. The chances were the articles, like almost all the SvG articles, contained very little information and may have been inaccurate. It is cleaner to restart from scratch. There are pictures at fr:Valérie Gauvin and fr:Grace Geyoro and links to sources, which may help. Aymatth2 (talk) 11:30, 24 October 2017 (UTC)

Mária Homolová Again

Hi Aymatth. Someone has moved Mária Homolová from Mária Homolová (gymnast) back to Mária Homolová without any disambiguation. Just a heads up that this is still the fixed version of the article so please don't delete it. Thank you and sorry for any trouble. Red Fiona (talk) 18:57, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

You just removed a whole bunch of content on this page. I have reverted it. If you want to change the citation style, please do so without removing constructive edits. epicgenius (talk) 00:46, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

Sorry about the rant earlier. I have adjusted the new additions as per CITEVAR (although I don't agree with the citation style still). Feel free to remove this section if you want. epicgenius (talk) 01:23, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
  • No problem. I just saw a mess of apparently pointless format changes that obscured the real content you had added. The articles I do usually rely mostly on books and papers as sources, with multiple pages being cited from each source, so I find it cleaner to stick the alphabetic list of sources out of the way at the back, with {{sfn}} citations in the text pointing to the source+page. The name of the {{sfn}} citation is unimportant, but I usually try to make it close to the start of the source definition name. That way the rare reader who clicks on the footnote link, then clicks on the {{sfn}} name, jumps to a source definition with a similar name: no surprise. Aymatth2 (talk) 02:40, 31 October 2017 (UTC)
  • Thank you for the explanation. Again, I apologize that I didn't see your objection. I thought the citation style thing was just an excuse to try to remove my attempts at adding content. epicgenius (talk) 04:06, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Pierre_Fran%C3%A7ois_Dumont

--FeanorStar7 01:03, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Brémonde de Tarascon requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. CreationFox (talk) 21:25, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

Am I missing the corresponding rationale on the [for deletion log of February 14]? This hotel is obviously an example of both Art Deco and Mid-century modern architecture in Rio. Prburley (talk) 13:49, 20 February 2018 (UTC)
The PROD was on the basis that it is now a mundane small hotel - not a valid argument. The building has a Patrimônio Histórico listing, but does not seem to be very special architecturally. The hotel is notable because it was once a high-quality boutique hotel with an excellent restaurant, and was written about. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:13, 20 February 2018 (UTC)
I removed the PROD. Prburley (talk) 14:46, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

Discussion about MOS:JOBTITLES

There is a discussion about whether to add clarifying text (shown in boldface ) to MOS:JOBTITLES at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Capital letters#Clarification of "Titles of people" that you may be interested in. Sincerely, HopsonRoad (talk) 14:33, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

Translation attribution

Please, when you translate (parts of) articles from other Wikipedia languages, indicate this in the edit summary and preferably also on the talk page, as indicated at Wikipedia:Plagiarism#Copying within Wikipedia. You seem to have translated parts of es:Visitación Conforti to add content to our article on her[2]. Please also add attribution to other pages where you may have done this (if any). Fram (talk) 14:57, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

@Fram: That is odd. I am usually meticulous about crediting translations, e.g. Revolt of the Languedoc winegrowers. This case is just two unsourced sentences and a list of publications, but still - I should have credited them. My bad. Aymatth2 (talk) 15:25, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
No problem, I also didn't see any similar issues in a spotcheck of your many contributions, and this case was indeed only a few sentences. Fram (talk) 15:31, 6 March 2018 (UTC)

invitation

I hope you are not offended by my dismissive tone at the ongoing AFD; I mean to be dismissive about the list-article not about you. You seem to be quite capable as a researcher and writer; I just wish you would put your energy into something productive. :) I happen to work mostly on historic sites articles in the U.S., where NRHP-listing is accepted for notability in Wikipedia. I would be very glad if you were to join wp:NRHP. If Canada is your bag, how about improving any list in Category:Lists of historic places in Canada? --Doncram (talk) 23:29, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

My quick analysis of List of historic places in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, for example: it should be edited to include bluelinks and redlinks for the Annapolis items, consistent with List of National Historic Sites of Canada in Nova Scotia. Many topics in both of those are worthy of articles. User:Magicpiano is an editor who is active in both U.S. NRHP and in Canada historic sites, by the way. Cheers, --Doncram (talk) 23:43, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

McArthur Lake (Goldsboro) listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect McArthur Lake (Goldsboro). Since you had some involvement with the McArthur Lake (Goldsboro) redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. Doncram (talk) 01:35, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

rollback abuse

You used rollback in three edits reverting edits of mine, which were clearly not vandalism and were clearly not eligible for rollback. Pinging User:zzuuzz, who comments in this Talk page history directing you to wp:ROLLBACK, who perhaps granted you the right. I would appreciate if you would reconsider and self-revert these edits. Included within some of these rollbacks is your insertion of false statements into mainspace. The edits are further marked "minor", although they are not. These are [3], [4], [5]. I request that you revert yourself and leave the articles as they are, pending some resolution in ongoing community discussion about them. There is room for editorial disagreement about some of this, and the editorial matters are, as you know, under discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2018_June_19#McArthur_Lake_(Goldsboro). Please consider this me asking you, as nicely as I currently can, to remedy the rollback abuse part of this. --Doncram (talk) 19:37, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

@Doncram: Repeated removal of sourced content without discussion in an effort to prove a point in a deletion debate clearly is vandalism. I understand that you may be upset that your AfD requests on lakes with names like this were declined (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/McArthur Lake, Ontario, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/McArthur Lake (2nd nomination) ). However, I ask that you refrain from further edits to remove material on these lakes. If you persist, I will request a block. Aymatth2 (talk)

Hi!

You are the author of this article. I'd like to inform you, that Articus died 25 July 1947, not 1946. His death is registered at civil registry office in Berlin-Zehlendorf Nr. 1476/1947. -- Dschungelfan (talk) 19:55, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

@Dschungelfan: Thank you for that information. I would prefer an online source, but these are not always available. I will update the article. Aymatth2 (talk) 21:37, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
Hi! Thank you for your immediate response. I've once found a photo of his grave online, that was confirming the date. But I cannot find it anymore. He has an entry in "Lexikon Berliner Grabstätten" (=encyclopedia of gravesites in Berlin) by Hans-Jürgen Mende (Haude & Spener, Berlin 2006). At page 343 it says: "Articus, Ernst, (16.10.1876-25.07.1947), Präsident der Reichsschuldenverwaltung a. D., Feld JEB-211".
As you can see I have extended the German article about him yesterday. My English is not good enough to do a sufficient English translation. I could do a draft in English and would be very happy, if you could correct then my errors. Could you do this? -- Dschungelfan (talk) 08:01, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
The German article does not cite sources. The English one is much less complete, but does cite sources, so the reader can tell where the information comes from. There is nothing controversial or implausible in the German version. Could the source for each statement be added? Aymatth2 (talk) 11:13, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
I have compiled the information from the literature, that is mentioned in the article. -- Dschungelfan (talk) 15:33, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
Is there any way you could add inline citations showing which source supports which statements? E.g.

On 9 October 1905, he married Erna Witzmann, a Catholic and the daughter of the Judicial Privy Councillor Julius Witzmann. Their only daughter Gerda was born on 22 October 1908.<ref name=Degener/>

I just feel very uncomfortable adding text that has no cited source. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 15:43, 1 July 2018 (UTC)
