A message from Megerflit

Hey Home Blander, C'mon, fella ... even the most sniveling of snitches knows to send every morsel of damning evidence to the almighty review committee when you're attempting to get a contributor banned ... why didn't you include my most recent reply to all the dauntless Wiki editors who have been purposely sabotaging my bio page? In that message I specifically requested that if you bumbling butchers can't leave the current stripped-to-the-bone bio alone, then kindly remove my page altogether. Now that's a solution that any tormented tattler would be wildly in favor of, eh? Well, Here 'tis ... have a party, champ.

My, what a stress-filled job you Wikipedestrians must have. Being made to fret and feverishly convene like stammering schoolgirls when the subject of one of your profiles takes exception to being called 'pretentious" and "self promoting" by one of your unimaginative tribe. Sorry to have rattled your composure, ladies, but y'see I hail from a time long ago when a site like yours would actually graciously welcome the input and insights of a featured subject. As your corporate nightmare machine fueled by litigation fears and bean-counting lackeys lumbers soullessly forward, you've left something very valuable in your dust. The human element. Simple consideration and gratitude for the efforts of someone who's trying to add some quality to your uninspired and vacuous standard presentation. You're now sitting there ringing your hands like the world is ending because I called you on viciously hacking the brief and informative bio I supplied down to a splinter and then complaining in your tag box that it still needs extensive work when there's NOTHING LEFT TO WORK ON. Pardon me if I find your screeching and flailing a tad excessive over a bio that consists of THREE STODGY SENTENCES. I'm officially asking you here and now to leave the current page alone, as criminally spartan as it is, and quit marring the appearance with ugly tag boxes with meaningless alarm text, or else just remove the whole page, which is utterly fine with me. From what I've seen of your ridiculous behaviors and attitudes, I don't want to be associated with your silly enterprise. Frankly, I don't know how I wound up on sticky Wiki in the first place. I certainly never solicited or campaigned for inclusion ... and I have good reason to suspect that there's more than a smidgen of "agenda" going on with all the incessant harassment I've faced since my first post but, alas, that's the current trend ... the conditions that prevail, as they say. At any rate. Kindly use your noodles to find a way to leave the bio page alone or pull it once and for all. It's that simple. From the heart of my bottom, Nick Bougas Megerflit (talk) 03:25, 21 September 2017 (UTC)

hey dude- I don't know if what you told me about my citation being unreliable is right or not, but how can I tell? its impossible. plz tell me how to know if a citation is reliable or not. Thx. RealKnockout (talk) 01:25, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello, RealKnockout. You should use a source that isn't commercial in nature, i.e. trying to sell products. Both sources you've cited so far appear to be doing exactly that (when I reverted you the first time, there was no source at all). Home Lander (talk) 01:29, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

Hey, I just wanted to talk to you about my change to St. Marys, Ontario. I live in St. Marys, and Arjay Thomson's YouTube channel is pretty well known around town, so I thought it was pretty accurate to his notability in the town of St. Marys. 2607:FEA8:6C5F:FB20:21C:B3FF:FEBC:EEFD (talk) 20:41, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

It may be known around that city, but no way does it meet notability here. Home Lander (talk) 20:42, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

ok dude. thx for telling me. I will remember that advertisation tip. thx.

You removed ifno I added to the anticonvulsant article

I added the use and the biological target but you removed it without reading it

You're right that I didn't read it, because I don't recall reverting it, even though I clearly did. Looks like the software doubled up when I tried to revert something else. It's been restored. Home Lander (talk) 16:01, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

A message from Twilliams23432434

Twilliams23432434 (talk) 17:29, 7 October 2017 (UTC)Hello, I do not understand why you made the decision to add the image back into the Fake News wikipedia page after I removed it. I am trying to make the topic of Fake News more truthful. Adding images from the 1800s concerning Fake News gives the reader a notion that the "Fake News" phenomenon began 100 years ago, when, in reality, it began at the end of last year during the 2016 election.

Ummm... I reverted your edit due to a badly placed link as well as addition of slanted content. Home Lander (talk) 17:31, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

Twilliams23432434 (talk) 17:34, 7 October 2017 (UTC)Adding the Criticism section to the Fake News topic was not Vandalism. Wikipedia's own definition of vandalism is adding content with no original research. There was research associated with the edit. A link to a website that was quoted was provided.

And in looking at that link (which you misplaced toward the top of the page), it stated nothing about what you wrote regarding NPR being slanted toward the left. Home Lander (talk) 17:37, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

A message from 70.79.85.203

On Jonathan Papelbon page under 2016, it's incorrect that Storen was traded to Cincinnati Reds during the offseason. He was traded to the Blue Jays. He started 2016 season with the Blue Jays and then got traded to the Mariners during the season. Before the start of 2017 season, he signed as a free agent with the Cincinnati Reds. Drew Storen page has all the correct information.

Hence, I corrected and changed on Jonathan Papelbon page that Storen was traded to Toronto Blue Jays during the 2016 offseason.

70.79.85.203 (talk) 01:04, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

That's okay, but per WP:BURDEN it is your responsibility to cite a proper source when adding the content. Home Lander (talk) 18:16, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

Message from Safinski

I posted explanation for the removal of the passages from the article on same-sex marriage on the talk page. I first suggested the removal of these passages sometime during July and said that if there were no objections I would remove the offending passages. As there were no responses on the talk page I removed passages in September. Here is a summary of my objections to the passages, and I paste my entire objection below. 1: The two citations for the Renaissance passage are duplicates. 2: The scholars of the citations used in the Renaissance and Medieval sections make basic disqualifying errors. The medieval citation says that the two men were married by a priest. Marriage was a contract between the two parties and the priest did not have a required role in marriage prior the to split between Catholics and Protestants. The article discussing Gary Ferguson's book makes similar disqualifying statements. The Council of Trent did not require marriages to take place in a Church, nor was the priest essential to the marriage, he only served as a witness. These problems demonstrate that the scholars cited do not have the necessary understanding of history to be used as references. 3: The citation given for the statement used for the section on the Roman Empire does not support the statement. The reference does not contain anything that supports the statement. An analogous problem would be using a text that refers to the King of the United States of America (not the president of the US) to support arguments about American History.

Here is my original commentary. Citation 121 and 122 have identical text. The only differences between the citations is that they are hosted on different websites. One should be struck. Furthermore, the text the citations refers to possess errors which should disqualify it. For example it says, "when the Council of Trent decreed that a wedding must henceforth be performed in a parish church, by an authorized priest, in the presence of witnesses, and following the proclamation of “banns” (the public announcement of the ceremony).". The errors are, 1: Trent did not require marriages to be performed in a Church only 'in facie ecclasia' i.e. in the face of the Church. In actuality they were performed outside the Church on the doorsteps. The second error is that Christian priests in the Western tradition never performed marriages. Based on Roman law, a marriage was a contract between two willing parties capable of entering into the contract: the spouses performed the wedding. Trent merely required witnesses.

Reference 120 is also problematic. Problem 1: priests did not marry anyone; thus, a reference which states this can not be considered reliable as it does not demonstrate the knowledge necessary to interpret historical documents. No such basis existed in canon law (as marriage was not a part of civil law in Western Europe until the changes brought on by the Protestants) for such a union. Therefore, while the document may attest that the two may have gone through the ceremony it should not necessary follow that they were considered married.

Finally, reference 118 does not support the statement: "Still, the lack of legal validity notwithstanding, there is a consensus among modern historians that same-sex relationships existed in ancient Rome, though the frequency and nature of "same-sex unions" during that period are obscure." The reference makes no such claim. The reference does examine evidence for same-sex marriage in Imperial Rome; however, it only uses references to Boswell (mentioned reference 105 and 106) and Foucault. As such, this article by Eskridge is not a survey of the historical literature ca. 1993. Since it is not a survey and Eskridge's article itself does not contain a statement concerning scholarly consensus Eskridge cannot be used to demonstrate consensus.

In summary, I argue that references 118, 120, 121, and 122 should all be struck and the accompanying text be eliminated. Citations 121 and 122 are duplicates, 120-122 do not demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the era to be reliable sources, and citation 118 does not support the statement it purports demonstrate. I will wait a few days to see if there are any comments. If none, I will move the material to the talk page and remove it from the article. Sept. 21, 2017 Safinski (talk) 15:41, 21 September 2017 (UTC) Safinski (talk) 17:30, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

Addendum: The reference by Gary Ferguson is used to demonstrate the history of same-sex marriage. The work is not a straight forward endorsement of that. Here is a quotation from Catherine Fletcher's review of the book. "For many readers, the interest of this study will lie in its resonance for modern-day campaigns around same-sex marriage, an issue that Ferguson addresses in his closing chapter. The uncertainty about the nature of the marriage planned at San Giovanni does not make this case an easy example either for proponents of the right to marry or for the critics who have raised concerns that the campaign for marriage rights often marginalizes those whose relationships do not fit the coupledom model. Perhaps because of its acknowledgment of the ambiguities, however, it is compelling reading that should make scholars, students, and activists think again about the history of sexuality."

Fletcher, Catherine. 2017. "Same-Sex Marriage in Renaissance Rome: Sexuality, Identity, and Community in Early Modern Europe." H-Net Reviews In The Humanities & Social Sciences 1-2. Historical Abstracts, EBSCOhost (accessed October 11, 2017). http://www.h-net.org/reviews/showrev.php?id=47913

Second Addendum There are only two book reviews for Gary Ferguson's work on EBSCO and none on JSTOR.

I edited the article ash because well there are only two different ashes even though volcanic ashes were explained in a short definition later on in the article. I was trying to correctly state on the article that volcanic ash exists too. So my apologies if the short edit may have bothered you or may have seemed incorrect or inaccurate. I didn't not notice the short description of volcanic ash at the bottom of the article. I'll try reading a whole article before I edit things.

Hello,

I am Brian Acton and I am the definitive source of my personal life.

I can state definitively that I am not married to Marina Acton and I have never been. The cited source was in the Ukraine. This seems hardly a credible source of information about US Citizens.

This has affected my personal life as my real world wife is not pleased to see this in writing.

I attempted to remove this personal information and citation but it was reverted.

Can you please reinstate my edit?

I acknowledge the Conflict of Interest. If there is a protocol that I should follow to get this fixed, please let me know.

Thanks,

Brian.

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Home Lander, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: {{subst:NPR invite}}. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

  • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
  • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

New Years new page backlog drive

Hello Home Lander, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Hi Bishonen! Yeah, somehow I doubted they really are that person. My gut told me since the article's about someone from the Islanders, the editor was probably a fan of the Rangers. Home Lander (talk) 17:35, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

108.35.168.227 (talk) 22:46, 21 January 2018 (UTC) The recent edit to the article on 'the Room' was modified to specifically remove all 'POV' portions of the previous text. Specifically, I had noticed the use of the word 'hilarity' which may be biased. I had removed that from the most recent version of the edit of which you removed. The most recent version, if you actually read through it, one should fine that it contains no biased 'POV' sections and claims simply that people consider it to be one of the best 'worst' films and that it has gained cult status due to its unintentional ineptness, both of which are quite true and do not violate the NPOV policy of Wikipedia. I believe you should re-assess your judgement.

I'm not quite following what you're saying here. The content you're adding to the lead is unsourced (particularly non-intentional ineptness and unorthodox production values) and appears less formal than the original. If you could WP:CITE your sources and write in a more formal tone (see WP:LEAD), it would be better off. Home Lander (talk) 22:53, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi I did leave an edit summary for the change I made to the Silent Scream page. I removed the last sentence as it is a leading sentence that tries to lead the reader to a conclusion. I think the community benefits better by having facts only and not opinion on the description of the work (in this case a film). I will be happy to discuss further if you like. In the meantime I will re edit the article. 96.58.21.233 (talk) 04:23, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

The content is properly sourced, so it should not be removed. Home Lander (talk) 04:24, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Understood, as long as there is a source you will accept it. I will edit it with sources indicating the opposite conclusion. Got it. 96.58.21.233 (talk) 04:27, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

No, that is removal of valid sources. Now leave it alone. Home Lander (talk) 04:29, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

No, I am not removing the leading paragraph. I will just add to it with reliable sources. And please don't tell people to "leave it alone" just because they are trying to make something more accurate. Once you explained why you subjectively removed my edit I left it as is. 96.58.21.233 (talk) 04:38, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Where your issue lies is that removing valid sources does not make anything more accurate. That film was criticized by the medical community, and there's no getting around that. Home Lander (talk) 04:41, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

A message from 96.58.21.233

Not sure where the word "leading" fails to make sense here. But I will make sure the opinions of others in the medical community with a different conclusion are added here as well. Seems like another editor/moderator may agree with me. I appreciate your passion though. 96.58.21.233 (talk) 04:46, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Home Lander, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!
The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
  • We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

  • We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
  • Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

You asked that I leave you a message. The article on Senator Flores that I edited and you weren't happy about is using information based on assumptions. The news media, Miami Herald specifically, are calling this a sexual affair but that was not what either Senator admitted to. The videos show nothing pornographic and the time stamps could very well be made up. I believe that this is being added maliciously and in a slanderous manner. Words matter. If their press release doesn't mention SEXUAL AFFAIR, then it cannot be cited that way from any news media outlet. Cleanupcrew2 (talk) 19:05, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

It's already discussed on the talk page - you can't use primary sources reliably. Your username also suggests a WP:COI. Home Lander (talk) 20:39, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Dantebish (talk) 04:50, 10 February 2018 (UTC) Please leave me alone. I worked hard to make accurate and noteworthy edits and I site all my sources for everything and feel the need to erase my work and make false accusations of vandalism when all I did was correct mistakes and add noteworthy information and sited my sources which were very credible and ligit. The reasons you gave seem to come out of some unfounded anger or resentment towards the individual discussed or myself of which I do not believe you know any of those people. Why would you be anger at a stranger who uses this site for what it was intended to be used for. All the eccentric things listed on the subject I referred to were very noteworthy as well as accurate and I cited the sources. If you disagree with the individual or are a "hater" of a public figure that is not a reason to vandalize. YOU are actually the complicit one here.

Goofy

"Comedic rhymed verses" are verses that are funny and rhyme. I think the point here was that the rhymes were funny, like in, let's see..."now the hog and the frog hurry out for a jog with the cat and the rat in their new running hats...[take a deep breath]...while the moose and the bear and the goose and the hare are doing their best to keep up with the rest". That sort of thing. And then wait for the rhyme on "hippopotamus". Drmies (talk) 03:45, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

@Drmies: Ah... I can see your train of thought there. I think it's too late at night for me to hop on board, though. LOL. Home Lander (talk) 03:49, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
So you're saying you asked for it? "...but not the hippopotamus...Then the animal pack comes scurrying back saying HEY! Come join the lot of us! ... And she just doesn't know...should she stay? should she go? but YES the hippopotamus!" It's a fun book. Drmies (talk) 03:52, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

You added a statement that was dubious, and attempted to cite it using a Twitter profile used for advertising, a very unreliable source. Also, you put the ref right above the references section rather than inline. Home Lander (talk) 23:58, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Hello BilCat. I absolutely agree with you, mainly due to the dubious edits about players for the Calgary Flames. I'm going to open an SPI. Home Lander (talk) 20:04, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
It might be better to give him a little WP:ROPE and see if he reverts to his other problematic edits, such as teenagers not being "children". I'm not sure there's enough behavioral evidence otherwise at this point, and the admins may be reluctant to run a CheckUser without more evidence. - BilCat (talk) 20:12, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

BilCat: Already  Done, it's awaiting a clerk and/or CU. Home Lander (talk) 20:21, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
Looks like we we're both "right" on the SPI: One admin required more behavioral evidence, but another was able to confirm it. My gut was that it was him all along, or I wouldn't have contacted you about it. - BilCat (talk) 22:18, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi! I saw your message about removing an external link that I've added about BDSM. I'm not very knowledgeable about Wikipedia's fine nuances in its rules, but I believe that I have added a valuable resource that contributes to people's understanding of the BDSM culture. For that reason I believe that the link to the website www.BDSM.bg/en should be added, as it is aimed towards people from all over the world.

If I'm wrong, please let me know so that I can figure out how I can contribute with that resource.

Kind regards, Silent Teddy Bear

NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018

Hello Home Lander, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

  • Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

  • A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

  • There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

  • Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

  • The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

  • Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
  • The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

NPP Backlog Elimination Drive

Hello Home Lander, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

We can see the light at the end of the tunnel: there are currently 2900 unreviewed articles, and 4000 unreviewed redirects.

Announcing the Backlog Elimination Drive!

  • As a final push, we have decided to run a backlog elimination drive from the 20th to the 30th of June.
  • Reviewers who review at least 50 articles or redirects will receive a Special Edition NPP Barnstar: Special Edition New Page Patroller's Barnstar. Those who review 100, 250, 500, or 1000 pages will also receive tiered awards: 100 review coin, 250 review coin, 500 review coin, 1000 review certificate.
  • Please do not be hasty, take your time and fully review each page. It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing.

Brad Clavering

Hello Home Lander.

I’ve recently tried my best to build a Wikipedia page for professional rugby league player, Brad Clavering.

I researched the subject and noticed he didn’t have anything on here. So I gathered the basic information I needed to try and make a start on his page.

I’ve noticed you’ve cleaned things up, which I thank you for because this is the first time I’ve done a complete page build from scratch.

When will the page be completely active and out of it's draft form, if you know please?

Cheers,

ScottJohnSexton. ScottJohnSexton (talk) 20:30, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Hello ScottJohnSexton, and welcome to Wikipedia. I've added the draft template to the top of your article where you can find additional information on how to further improve it (yes, I took a few minutes to add a few things, but it's not my specialty). To start, it's going to need some more sources for many of the statements; you could use one of the existing player articles such as Andrew Heffernan (rugby league) as an example. Once you feel the article is ready for mainspace you can use the template to submit the draft for review. Happy editing. Home Lander (talk) 20:38, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.12 30 July 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. (Purge)

Hello Home Lander, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules
  • New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
  • Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
  • Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
Editathons
  • Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
The Signpost
  • The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. If you have special messages to be published, or if you would like to submit an article (one about NPR perhaps?), don't hesitate to contact the editorial team here.

I have tried to update the death date of William P. Acker and you have deleted stating that I did not supply the source. I have to inform you that I am one of his grandchildren so I am the source. Mbholcomb (talk) 02:15, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for your attention. The Instagram citation is an official press release by the instructors who quit their jobs. The information I added simply describes the content of the text. Hence I do not see why the source should be considered unreliable. In any case, the story will soon be on other websites as well and I will be happy to add the information after that.MrandMsP (talk) 18:29, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Yes, please use only a WP:RELIABLE source if/when one becomes available. Thanks. Home Lander (talk) 18:38, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Oh, no problem, wasn't even my edit, just happened to notice! Home Lander (talk) 01:01, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

I haven't added anything to the article. I simply subtracted objectionable points that are inaccurate. It would be difficult for me to cite Gavin McInnes' own words and same for the Proud Boys organization. Interestingly no one, from Wikipedia, bothered to fact check the cited articles, by contacted either Gavin McInnes or the Proud Boys organization. I was correcting that egregious mistake. The truth hurts so get ready for pain (talk) 23:50, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

That's no egregious mistake; it's properly sourced and you should not be removing it. Home Lander (talk) 23:53, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

Your user page

Hi Home Lander. I'm not sure if this is happening for you, but for my browser, on your user page, that {{committed identity}} template is messing up and casting an orange box over the whole page. To fix that, you may want to add something like {{clear}} just before the {{committed identity}} template on your user page. Mz7 (talk) 22:11, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi Mz7! That's strange. See this file for how it appears to me. Which browser/setup are you running? Home Lander (talk) 22:19, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
Hmm, that is indeed strange. I'm running Firefox 61.0.2 on macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. Here's a screenshot. Mz7 (talk) 22:23, 18 August 2018 (UTC)
Mz7, interesting. I loaded it on my cell phone just now and it is displaying like your screenshot above. I'm going to ask at the village pump to see if it's a problem with the template. Note that I actually have the script for my userpage "stored" at User:Home Lander/Userpage.css (where no one else but sysops can edit it) and then I transclude it onto the userpage. Hello Home Lander. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of User talk:2600:1:953D:628C:A45E:14F9:4BA3:2265, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not blatantly vandalism or a hoax. Thank you. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 02:45, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

@DeltaQuad: It's just a blocked editor trolling; WP:DENY was why I tagged it. Home Lander (talk) 02:46, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
While true, WP:DENY does not apply to G3, especially when it's an unblock appeal. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 17:12, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

Geely Pages

Hi,

I've noticed that you have reverted the contributions I have made to the Geely page. This is due to a conflict of interest.

I acknowledge that a conflict of interest does exist here, and I was not aware of the restrictions on this. I would however still argue that the changes should be allowed.

The purpose of the changes was not to advertise or promote Geely, but rather to provide users with clearer information. As it stands the Geely page is linked to the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group page, however these are inherently separate entities. I have already created a new ZGH page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Zhejiang_Geely_Holding_Group which is awaiting review.

I'm happy to take on any feedback or thoughts on the work I contributed - as I say it was done in the best faith and respect for Wikipedia, and the intention was purely informational and well referenced. I would also have added more images and product information which is lacking on the page at the moment.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

FPDColch — Preceding unsigned comment added by FPDColch (talkcontribs) 14:52, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi FPDColch. I reverted your edits largely because they seemed to read more like an advertisement rather than a neutral article; also, a small portion of the text was detected as possibly lifted from another site. Based on your now-declared conflict of interest (I cleaned up your declaration on your user page for you), I would recommend you suggest changes for the article(s) on the talk page and receive some feedback from others. See WP:COI for further information. Home Lander (talk) 19:48, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Explain your move of the draft from article space to user space, when others are to use it as well, to collaborate on drafting some changes. -Inowen (nlfte) 01:10, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

It's not acceptable for article space. Others are free to work on it even if it's in your userspace. Home Lander (talk) 02:27, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
But if its in user space, other's won't feel free to edit it, because it has an idea of personal posession attached to it. -Inowen (nlfte) 10:00, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
Well it's not acceptable to have in mainspace, so move it to draftspace if you don't want it there. Home Lander (talk) 14:11, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018

Hello Home Lander, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news
As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
Other
Moving to Draft and Page Mover
  • Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
  • If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
  • Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
  • The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
  • The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.
List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

  • Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget.
  • In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions.
  • MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues.
  • User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page)
  • User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50).
  • User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you.
  • User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link.
  • User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion.
  • User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Home Lander, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

Backlog

As of 21 October 2018, there are 3650 unreviewed articles and the backlog now stretches back 51 days.

Community Wishlist Proposal
Project updates
  • ORES predictions are now built-in to the feed. These automatically predict the class of an article as well as whether it may be spam, vandalism, or an attack page, and can be filtered by these criteria now allowing reviewers to better target articles that they prefer to review.
  • There are now tools being tested to automatically detect copyright violations in the feed. This detector may not be accurate all the time, though, so it shouldn't be relied on 100% and will only start working on new revisions to pages, not older pages in the backlog.

Why did you remove my addition? TopazHeart123 (talk) 16:42, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

I removed it because it was your unsourced personal opinion. Also, the talk page is for discussing improving the article, not for general discussion of anything. Home Lander (talk) 16:43, 27 October 2018 (UTC)

Why did you remove my edits? 172.58.84.103 (talk) 02:11, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Hello IP. I reverted the edits per what Wikipedia is not; they appeared to be promotional and not suitable for inclusion here. Please see Wikipedia:Alternative outlets for other options. Thanks. Home Lander (talk) 01:26, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
I'm sorry that my revisions to this page seemed spammy or promotional. Please know, that is not my intention. I'm a student trying to complete an assignment for a college course. I only need my revisions to be visible until Monday evening & then I plan to remove them. I have found other Minnesota cities with similar categories. So I thought these revisions would be okay. Again, I'm sorry. If they seem unsuitable, would you please be willing to help me revise them? 172.58.84.103 (talk) 02:11, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
Hello again. You might want to direct your professor to WP:INSTRUCTORS; this assignment doesn't seem to be meeting Wikipedia's norms. Thanks. Home Lander (talk) 01:49, 3 November 2018 (UTC)
Hello again Home Lander. Which specific revisions went against Wikipedia's norms? I'm willing to revise them, to meet the norms they currently go against. 172.58.84.103 (talk) 02:11, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi. First of all, all of the revisions will need to be WP:SOURCED. Also, although it is a failed proposal, this is probably a good rough guideline to follow. Many aspects of smaller communities will not be known to most people, and therefore, not notable. Home Lander (talk) 02:15, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.15 16 November 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Home Lander,

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
  • Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Home Lander. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

November 2018

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have recently shown interest in the Arab–Israeli conflict. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect: any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or any page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Cornelis Klein Article

Home Lander:

Thanks for reviewing my article, but I do not understand what you mean by "This submission is not adequately supported by reliable sources. Reliable sources are required so that information can be verified."

The references I added are all reliable and authoritative. Do I need to add links to the journals? That will show that the articles exist, but only users with access (members, subscribers) will be able to download them.

I could add the numbers of citations for the articles, which is the best measure of quality, but they are not published anywhere, they must be calculated in real time using Google Scholar or Scopus or GeoRef and change (increase) with time, so are difficult to maintain.

It is difficult to find links to sources for every society position he has held, as but is it not clear from the pattern of his career that he was one of the most prominent mineralogists in the US if not the world?

Thanks!

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018

Hello Home Lander,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

vandal modifying Silent English alphabet

Hi Home Lander,

I have been ratcheting up notifications to a repeated vandal of Silent English alphabet. A cursory view of their edits might seem to indicate a new editor attempting to add content from their point of view. However, after viewing a dozen or so of their edits, my conclusion is that they are a vandal.

I have reverted vandalism many times in the past, but this user is the first where I need to elevate my concerns to Wikipedia experts. I noticed your membership in the Counter-Vandalism Unit, hence this message. If you are busy, I will eventually go to the resources listed on WP:VD.

The user in question is a mobile editor (hope I am using the correct term), and they edit from at least four IP addresses. I have placed notices on 2-3 of their IP-address talk pages. They have been vandalizing two other pages that I know of: Hard and soft C and Silent letter.

I would appreciate any guidance or assistance that you can offer. Meanwhile, I will continue to revert and notify them.

Cheers, Overjive (talk) 01:10, 15 December 2018 (UTC)

Hi Overjive. I've left that IP a note regarding the unsourced contributions to the pages. What I would recommend for fighting vandalism is using WP:Twinkle. It gives you fast methods of leaving warnings, reporting to administrators, etc. I'll keep an eye on those pages also and see if they return. Home Lander (talk) 02:03, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
Hi again Home Lander. The same mobile editor has been vandalizing Silent letter. Is there something you can do about that? All the best, Overjive (talk) 22:05, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Final warnings should be final

I'm not sure why after prior blocks and two "final" warnings you would place a level 3 warning.[2] - SummerPhDv2.0 00:35, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

I messed up

Hi Lander, thank you for your help with a request for speedy deletion on the Marry Ogden Abbott talk page. I really boofed that one by creating the page and misspelling her middle name (it should be Ogden NOT Ogdon) in the process. Thank you for your help with this, Most cordially yours, feeling-very-stupid-Tom RRFWTommartin (talk) 02:46, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

RRFWTommartin, I moved the draft to the correct spelling of Draft:Mary Ogden Abbott; all appears to be cleaned up. Happy editing. Home Lander (talk) 21:18, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

Reverting users

This is vandalism. Pure and simple. You need to watch the edit, not the user's summary. --Wisdom Distributor (talk) 21:41, 22 January 2019 (UTC)

Wisdom Distributor, you obviously have no concept of the definition of WP:VANDALISM. Home Lander (talk) 21:45, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
Don't I? Just see my few contributions and ask yourself again. The edit you reverted was NOT vandalism by any stretch of the language. YOURS was vandalism because the editor - despite his inappropriate summaries - corrected the spelling of a certain word, and you returned the incorrect spelling. --Wisdom Distributor (talk) 21:48, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
Wisdom Distributor, my edit was a revert of a block-evading editor whose contributions are no longer welcome here regardless of what they are. If you'll look at the edits above that, you'll see a good-faith editor who corrected spelling errors, and I actually recognized what had happened and welcomed/thanked them. You need to have a hard look at WP:VANDALISM before you, as a new editor with less than 25 edits, begin throwing around false accusations of vandalism toward experienced editors here. James Rearden

Hello, how/why are sources needed when adding info about yourself. Many of the groups that i started/ran had to be kept secretive due to homophobia of the time so there is little to no documentation. Zoloftblues (talk) 03:12, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

Zoloftblues, we have no way of knowing who you really are. Please have a look at WP:BLP before adding details - particularly controversial details such as homosexuality - regarding living or recently deceased people. Thanks. Home Lander (talk) 03:13, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
Zoloftblues, also, have a look at Wikipedia:Autobiography while you're at it, since writing about yourself is generally discouraged. Home Lander (talk) 03:15, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the help! I appreciate it. Zoloftblues (talk) 03:23, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

Leonor Antunes draft

Hello, I noticed the deletion postponement on the Leonor Antunes draft. Thank you. I will be editing the draft/article as a part of some new Wikipedian training in the coming weeks. I plan to substantially improve the draft and publish it. If it does get deleted soon, I'll simply create a new draft. Best, MidwayKaty (talk) 21:22, 23 February 2019 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.17

Hello Home Lander,

News
Discussions of interest
  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
  • copyvio-check – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
  • The NPP flowchart now has clickable hyperlinks.

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello Home Lander,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

Decline

Hello, I am trying to make the page for Teeky and Juny, but you seem to keep declining it. What should I fix with the page? It is full of facts and itsn't a promotion nor a demotion. Neatalligator123 (talk) 01:03, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

Your page shows no demonstration of WP:NOTABILITY. Until you can demonstrate it, the page will be declined. Home Lander (talk) 01:21, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

Changes to Hilal Ibn Ali

I made the changes to remove historically incorrect information. How can I cite it? You can contact any scholar Shia and Sunni scholars on the matter to clarify it. There is also no mention of any son of Ali as being Hilal even in Sunni Islam. It's as hysterical to trace a fictional Hilal to Umamah bint Al'As and then say she is a daughter of Muhammad when 'bint' clearly means 'daughter of' in Arabic. Isn't this just paradoxical? Also, please justify how was the entry was there in the first place without any real citation other than a fake/hoax web archived link without any real sources to it? Thanks. Momin Rizvi (talk) 00:37, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello. I'm taking a look into this, but please don't just erase the content of articles; take them to WP:AFD instead. Thanks. Home Lander (talk) 00:47, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

Sugar Bee apple

I've reverted your reversion of the "unexplained removal of content". The user's edit summary was vague, but the removal was valid. There is no clear definition of a "slicing apple", and not a single cited reference validated the claim. I've re-removed the material. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 16:59, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

WikiDan61, got the alert on that when you reverted it, appreciated. Home Lander (talk) 17:00, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019

Hello Home Lander,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Other news

School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

Hello Home Lander,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Google Domains

Just for your information I've filed a complaint on Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism against the IPV6 user User:2600:1006:B10B:DA27:C93F:381A:D82C:602E and indicated that they may be a sockpuppet because there were other IPV6 users doing the same thing and responding in the same manner. Thanks for catching the vandalism on that page and reverting it. YborCityJohn (talk) 02:14, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

YborCityJohn, aware. I debated whether to simply revert their edit but based on their edit summary and seeing the various IPs in the history, I concluded that they have no intention to edit constructively. Home Lander (talk) 02:17, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello Home Lander,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 818 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:21, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
