Talk to us about talking
The Wikimedia Foundation is planning a global consultation about communication. The goal is to bring Wikimedians and wiki-minded people together to improve tools for communication.
We want all contributors to be able to talk to each other on the wikis, whatever their experience, their skills or their devices.
We are looking for input from as many different parts of the Wikimedia community as possible. It will come from multiple projects, in multiple languages, and with multiple perspectives.
We are currently planning the consultation. We need your help.
We need volunteers to help talk to their communities or user groups.
You can help by hosting a discussion at your wiki. Here's what to do:
- First, sign up your group here.
- Next, create a page (or a section on a Village pump, or an e-mail thread – whatever is natural for your group) to collect information from other people in your group. This is not a vote or decision-making discussion: we are just collecting feedback.
- Then ask people what they think about communication processes. We want to hear stories and other information about how people communicate with each other on and off wiki. Please consider asking these five questions:
- When you want to discuss a topic with your community, what tools work for you, and what problems block you?
- What about talk pages works for newcomers, and what blocks them?
- What do others struggle with in your community about talk pages?
- What do you wish you could do on talk pages, but can't due to the technical limitations?
- What are the important aspects of a "wiki discussion"?
- Finally, please go to Talk pages consultation 2019 on Mediawiki.org and report what you learned from your group. Please include links if the discussion is available to the public.
You can also help build the list of the many different ways people talk to each other.
Not all groups active on wikis or around wikis use the same way to discuss things: it can happen on wiki, on social networks, through external tools... Tell us how your group communicates.
You can read more about the overall process on mediawiki.org. If you have questions or ideas, you can leave feedback about the consultation process in the language you prefer.
Thank you! We're looking forward to talking with you.

Please participate to the talk pages consultation
Hello
Our team at the Wikimedia Foundation is working on a project to improve the ease-of-use and productivity of wiki talk pages. As a Teahouse host, I can imagine you’ve run into challenges explaining talk pages to first-time participants.
We want all contributors to be able to talk to each other on the wikis – to ask questions, to resolve differences, to organize projects and to make decisions. Communication is essential for the depth and quality of our content, and the health of our communities. We're currently leading a global consultation on how to improve talk pages, and we're looking for people that can report on their experiences using (or helping other people to use) wiki talk pages. We'd like to invite you to participate in the consultation, and invite new users to join too.
We thank you in advance for your participation and your help.

Recent changes
- Pages can use geocoordinates from Wikidata with the
mw.wikibase.entity:formatStatements
Lua function or the#statements
parser function. If they do, they will now be shown using a Kartographer<maplink>
if the wiki can use Kartographer. You can report bugs or ask questions on Phabricator. - There is now an EventStream to see when links are added or removed on Wikimedia wikis. You can read the discussions and plans.
Problems
- Some wikis will not be able to edit for a short period of time on 19 March (UTC). This will start at 15:00 UTC. It will last up to 15 minutes but probably shorter. You can see the list of affected wikis. This is because of network maintenance. You can still read the wikis.
- Editors who use Firefox to edit with the visual editor had a problem with copying text. When they tried to select text that included footnotes, templates or block images in the middle they would often only get part of the text. This has now been fixed. [8]
- Some maps didn't work for a while on 8 March. This has been fixed. [9][10]
Changes later this week

Changes later this week
- When you use rollback you will be able to get a confirmation prompt on most wikis. It asks you if you wanted to do the rollback. This is to avoid misclicks. You will have to opt in to get it. On German Wikipedia it will be an opt-out feature from 28 March. [11][12]

Meetings
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 20 March at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Admins will be able to block someone from editing a page or a namespace. This already works on a few Wikimedia wikis. You can read more. If your wiki wants to be an early tester of this, you can tell the developers. [13]
- Toolforge will shut down the Ubuntu Trusty job grid. This will happen the week of 25 March. Tools that use this grid needs to be moved to the new Debian Stretch job grid. If they haven't, they will be taken offline. Maintainers can restart the tools later. Users may not be able to use them in the meanwhile. You can see a list of affected tools.

- The new version of the content translation tool will be used for all new translations. The older version will still be used for translations that were started with it. Most users won’t see any change. More than 80% of the published translations are already using the new version. [14]
Problems
- There was a problem with editing with Safari on iOS. When you wrote an edit summary you couldn't save the edit. This has now been fixed. [15]
- The editing toolbar sometimes disappears when you scroll on iOS devices. This will be fixed soon. [16]
- Wikis can over-ride interface messages on-wiki. A problem meant that sometimes an old versions of any changed messages were shown instead. This included the sitenotice and other important parts of the interface. This was fixed at around 2019-03-22 16:00 (UTC). Logged-out users may still get the wrong message. Signature
Your signature is way too long; per WP:SIG, signatures must not be longer than 255 characters and yours clocks in at 725. Even after replacing extraneous formatting, I can't get it below 387, so something's going to have to go as far as colours are concerned. Perhaps changing colour every other letter may reduce your character count, or in a pinch you could adjust your CSS so it looks right to you.--Launchballer 19:08, 3 April 2019 (UTC)

List of stage names edit reverted
Regarding your reversion of my edits on List of stage names -
Did you bother to read the talk page where I had proposed the cleanup of this article (Talk:List of stage names#Get rid of the "not listed here" people) or did you just revert it automatically?
I did state "see Talk Page" in the Edit summary.
The article states "People are not listed here if they fall into one or more of the following categories:" and then it lists them!!!
This is patently absurd. I intend to continue with cleanup of the article.
If you can think of any reason why this contradiction should be allowed to continue, please let me know.

- Admins on French and Polish Wikipedia can block someone from editing a page or a namespace. If your wiki wants to get these blocks before they are available to all wikis, you can tell the developers. [19][20]
Problems
- You will be able read but not edit most wikis for 30 minutes on 11 April at 05:00 (UTC). This is because of a hardware problem. You can see a list of the affected wikis. [21]
- A map update caused some problems on 29 March and 30 March. It was rolled back. [22]

(empty string). When you read a page it will return"-"
(dash). For now this will only affect content namespaces. [26] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 April. It will be on all wikis from 11 April (calendar).

I printed out the article to study it, and it was so atrociously written, I could not help but mark up the article heavily with my pen. Hello, I recently got a talk from you regarding the DNS Sinkhole article about an external link not being appropriate for an srticle, can you please elaborate? --Sniff122 (talk) 14:58, 23 April 2019 (UTC)sniff122
- @Sniff122:Hello, I reverted the edit because it is not in favour of Wikipedia guidelines. Please read WP:EL. With rare exceptions, external links should not be used in the body of an article. Instead, include appropriate external links in an "External links" section at the end of the article, and in the appropriate location within an infobox, if applicable (WP:ELPOINTS). Best of luck! Thank you.--PATH SLOPU 08:49, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
Supposed Edits
Good day. I recently received a message from you stating I made a joke edit to the article of the number 24. I do not recall ever editing that article. Can you perhaps tell me what edit was supposedly made? Could this be a mistake or could my IP address maybe be compromised? Only today I made an account to inquire about this very problem, and I am not an experienced contributor. So excuse me if I am doing something wrong here. Your help would be appreciated. NelsonM4t (talk) 19:31, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
- @NelsonM4t:Hi greetings, welcome to Wikipedia. I can understand your problem. The edit which is reverted may be done by another user with same IP address, since it changes time to time as per DHCP. It is not a problem. You can remove the warnings, if it is inappropriate. Don't worry about that. Feel free to edit Wikipedia with your new registered account. It hasn't any problems. If you have any doubts on editing, feel free to approach Teahouse. You can also approach any users including me. Best of luck! Thank you. --PATH SLOPU 09:13, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
Hi. Yes you made a mistake. I had got that sentence from an entertainment news source. It is completely quoted and sourced as well. The anon used removed it because he did not like it. I revert it. Dagana4 (talk) 11:37, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
Rollback granted
Hi Path slopu. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:
- Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
- Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
- Rollback should never be used to edit war.
- If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
- Use common sense.
If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! ~ Amory (u • t • c) 15:31, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
- @Amorymeltzer:Thank you very much. I'll counter vandalism more efficient with this new right. Thank you. --PATH SLOPU 17:05, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 May newsletter
The second round of the 2019 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to scored 32 points to advance into round 3. Our top four scorers in round 2 all scored over 400 points and were:
- Cas Liber (1210), our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three DYKs. He also made good use of the bonus points available, more than doubling his score by choosing appropriate articles to work on.
- Kosack (750), last year's runner up, with an FA, a GA, two FLs, and five DYKs.
- Adam Cuerden (480), a WikiCup veteran, with 16 featured pictures, mostly restorations.
- Zwerg Nase (461), a seasoned competitor, with a FA, a GA and an ITN item.
Other notable performances were put in by Barkeep49 with six GAs, Ceranthor, Lee Vilenski, and Canada Hky, each with seven GARs, and MPJ-DK with a seven item GT.
So far contestants have achieved nine featured articles between them and a splendid 80 good articles. Commendably, 227 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2019 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. The judges are pleased with the thorough GARs that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Discussion
Hi Path
Thank you for your message.
I had made changes to British Study Centres Wikipedia page. It was not a test, I was updating the company's profile as the previous information was outdated. Can you kindly revert it back to the changes I had made? If no then can you tell me how I can go about adding the changes I had made?
Also - the logo of the company is also outdated. Any idea how I can upload the new logo?
Kind regards,
ThreeWarriors— Preceding unsigned comment added by ThreeWarriors (talk • contribs) 6:36 pm, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
- @ThreeWarriors:Hi greetings, hearty welcome to Wikipedia.
- First of all, we should discuss about few basic things.
- When starting a discussion in talk page, please add it in a new section. (you can either use
==
on both side of heading or use New section in talk page). This is also applicable for in articles. - Always sign your post with ~~~~.
- Always link article in this way-- [[article name]]. You can notice it from my change.
- So I strongly recommend you to participate in The Wikipedia Adventure for understanding Wikipedia. Best of luck!
- Hope that you will remember this.
- Now we can discuss about the issue,
- I reverted your edits, because some of them seemed as test edit. But, if you believe that your edits are in good faith and it is true, you can revert my edit by simply undoing it. Also when adding new contents in Wikipedia, ensure some citations showing it is correct information. The sources should be reliable. You can learn this from Wikipedia adventure. Please also do not try to make vandalism, disruptive edits, joke edits in Wikipedia and it may leads to blocking. (You didn't do anything like that). If you have any doubts in editing, you can approach any user including me or approach Teahouse. Best of luck. Happy editing. Thank you.--PATH SLOPU 14:28, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
Hi Path. I have reverted back to the changes I had made as the information is valid and taken from the website itself. Please let me know if there are any issues. Kind regards, ThreeWarriors ThreeWarriors (talk) 15:42, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

Incomplete reverts
Hello PATH SLOPU, I noticed you were using Huggle for countering vandalism, in some of your edits, you only remove vandalism from the latest revision, if you are reverting one edit, please take the time and revert to the last proper revision. --qedk (t 桜 c) 15:06, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
- @QEDK:Thank you for your advice. I'll do so. But I have a doubt that when using rollback we can only revert the edits of last editor. Then we should undo to the last proper edit if vandalism exist. Is Huggle has any options to solve it? Please help.--PATH SLOPU 09:39, 12 May 2019 (UTC)

This warns or stops them if they seem to just copy what the machine translation gives them. If this system is too strict or not strict enough you can tell the language team. [49]

Hi, thanks for the edit message. I agree my edit wouldn't be appropriate for the encyclopedia as a reference or cited piece of info. However, that is why I put it in the External Links section which serves the purpose of showing info outside of wikipedia on the same topic. List of The Gifted characters reversion
My edit was not a "test". Category:Lists of Marvel Comics television characters contained several entries alphabetically sorted into the "L" section rather than a more relevant section because they all began with "List of". My edit, before it was reverted, had sorted "List of The Gifted characters" into a "G" section. Notice of edit warring noticeboard discussion
Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion involving you at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring regarding a possible violation of Wikipedia's policy on edit warring. Thank you. Literacylord (talk) 11:52, 30 May 2019 (UTC)
- The case was closed. Just to state here for the record, removing an AfD tag from an article up for deletion is clearly disruptive, so restoring the AfD tag falls under the 3RR exemption for reverting obvious vandalism. —C.Fred (talk) 12:11, 30 May 2019 (UTC)
- @C.Fred:Hi greetings, Thank you very much for the help. I'm asking a doubt on a curiosity, I think the three user accounts removed AfD template in that article may be socks (they were already blocked), aren't they?. Is my assumption correct? Please help. Also can I remove the warning template now? Regards.--PATH SLOPU 13:18, 30 May 2019 (UTC)
- It is reasonable to assume that one person was using all three accounts. If there's no further activity, there's nothing else we need to do. If another user were to show up making the same edits, then we could start a sockpuppet investigation.
- And yes, you're free to remove the notification template above. I would have removed it myself, but I felt replying was better. If another sock had come back to try to pursue an edit-warring claim again, they'd see my response. —C.Fred (talk) 15:01, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

- When linking a page in Wikipedia, use the wiki markup
[["Name of Article"]]
instead of copy and pasting the URL of that page (in wikipedia). That is usually used to link external links. Please also remember the guidelines on adding external links. Thank you.--PATH SLOPU 09:24, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
Sources needed for Days of the Year pages
I see you recently accepted a pending change to June 9 that did not include a direct source.
You're probably not aware of this change, but Days of the Year pages are no longer exempt from WP:V and direct sources are required for additions. For details see the content guideline and the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide. I've gone ahead and un-accepted this edit and backed it out.
All the pages in the Days of the Year project have had pending changes protection turned on to prevent vandalism and further addition of entries without direct sources. As a pending changes patroller, please do not accept additions to day of year pages where no direct source has been provided on that day of year page. The burden to provide sources for additions to these pages is on the editor who adds or restores material to these pages. Thank you. Toddst1 (talk) 01:55, 31 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Toddst1: Thank you very much for the advises given to me. I'll always try to remember this in my future reviews. I won't try to accept the pending revisions related to dates and years that haven't reliable sources. Thank you. --PATH SLOPU 09:29, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

Hi! I reverted the revert over at Wikipedia:Help desk because the IP had a question. But at the same time I agree with you that where the question was added was not correct. But anyways thanks for reverting vandalism (looking though your other contributions) on other pages it's really awesome. Sorry I forgot to assume good faith, OkayKenG (talk) 09:34, 1 June 2019 (UTC) |
- @OkayKenji:Thank you very much for your kind appreciation. Thank you for your big and generous heart! I'll continue my efforts to counter-vandalism. Thank you.--PATH SLOPU 09:38, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
