Welcome to the Wikipedia[edit]

Welcome, newcomer!

Here are some useful tips to ease you into the Wikipedia experience:

Also, here are some odds and ends that I find useful from time to time:

You can sign your name on any page by typing 4 tildes, likes this: BrownBot (talk) 03:50, 5 June 2009 (UTC).

Feel free to ask me anything the links and talk pages don't answer. You can most easily reach me by posting on my talk page.

Best of luck, and have fun! Ccson 13:58, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

You need to subst spam and vandal templates[edit]

You should double check with someone like User:Gwernol, but as I understand it, vandal and spam warning templates are supposed to be applied with the subst keyword. So when you added a warning to User talk:66.230.200.227, you should have used {{subst:anon vandal}} rather than what you entered. This causes the actual text of the template output to appear in the page. This is supposed to reduce the load on the servers. Will (Talk - contribs) 19:38, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

thanks, i will correct that.-Robotam 15:16, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

I see on your page you like Christian Music[edit]

We need more editors at wikia:ChristianMusic. Come join us. I am the new administrator. Your Wikia.com account is good for all Wikia.com wikis and a few others like Memory Alpha (a Star Trek wiki). Will (Talk - contribs) 19:39, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism[edit]

Hello Robotam,

You posted a message on my talk page about vandalism.

I don't know exactly what you are referring to.

Did I make an edit that was a mistake?

not at all, no mistake by you--I was offering suggestions on dealing with others vandalizing the pages you are editing. -Robotam 18:28, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Montford Point Marine Association[edit]

I'm in the process of researching this article for rewrite, but I would appreciate some clarification about copyvio. another editor posted the copyright permission template on the talk page[1]; are you saying that that permission is not valid, or just not relevant? Thanx-Robotam 14:51, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Woops! I didn't notice the permission on the talk page. Sorry about that. I reversed everything (including the db-copyvio speedy tag which was what led me there in the first place - that guy's bad too...). —Wknight94 (talk) 18:37, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

that's for clarifying that--greatly appreciated.-Robotam 20:26, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:EddyWalkingOnSunshine.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:EddyWalkingOnSunshine.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Good work[edit]

Excellent work getting ahead of Mykungfu this week. I'd say this was his most concerted effort to mess with the wiki yet, and it failed largely because of your efforts. Thank you. BTW, there's a new editor moving through some of the same pages - looks innocuous so far, but let me know if you see any suspicious edits. | Mr. Darcy talk 17:44, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

I think you should label real96 [2] a possible sockpuppet of user:mykungfu . A checkuser has been requested by MrDarcy [3]

The Enigma of What is MyKungFu[edit]

This story was really meant for MrDarcy, Ccson, Robotam, Real96/Bearly541 (the edit's to the links and Real's edits to bearly's talk page gave it away) since they were always wondering as to what drove MyKungFu. Initially it was to spread the message of some of the ills that went on with some greek organizations. It later became some of the ills (that had factual basis) of other groups. After a while it was simply the joy of the debate (sentence by sentence as it seemed). Even if you don't know who I am, you are like a family. We've been debating for over a year. The cat and mouse, it honestly has been fun. Some of the article that were initially created were in good faith or eventually became good faith, Gamma Phi, Charles C. Poindexter, Walter M. Kimbrough, Holcombe Rucker, Sigma Pi Phi, and Alpha Kappa Nu. I learned strong references and loved to debate them. I know that many organizations like to be seen in a good light especially when they have their members editing it. That though shouldn't stop Wikipedia as being a source of the whole truth. Which is what I feel was being stopped from being shown. E.g. the hazing incidents of many greek organizations. The ban was a ban; and I asked for the account to be unblocked after a few months. It never happened. Oh well... Many of my screen names were caught, but in the chase there were a number of screen names that you mistakenly thought was MyKungFu. I can tell you that Vkmayes and Mukokeri weren't mine. I really laughed when I saw Real96 labeled a sock; MrDarcy than did a checkuser on her and when it was found false wouldn't apologize. Also how JeffGent was almost labeled a sock by Ccson on Robotam's page. It's funny how so many IP's were labeled socks when they weren't socks at all. Anyway, I am writing because I am currently going thru a family crises. My brother was seriously injured in Iraq by a rocket attack. I found out today on my way back home. I won't be on Wikipedia for a long time. In all it's been a lot of fun. All the best...

MyKungFu MyWingChun 05:19, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

I wish you well, and your brother the best on a speedy recovery. I know a thing or two about your angst. When you come back, as I am sure you will, I seriously hope you will go about being re-instated the right way, and then offer your energy to positively contributing to this encyclopedia. People are not as against you as you seem to believe, but even if they were, spite and retaliation make us smaller, not those that we believe persecute us. Here's hoping we all follow the facts, not the agenda! Hotep,-Robotam 16:13, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Duboisapa1.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Duboisapa1.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 16:07, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Exhibition drill[edit]

Information.svg Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to Wikipedia. However, please know that editors do not own articles and should respect the work of their fellow contributors on Exhibition drill. If you create or edit an article, know that others are free to change its content. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.-Robotam 20:31, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

BTW, excellent work on 249th Engineer Battalion (Prime Power).-Robotam 03:18, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

My decision to undo your edits in reference to the Exhibition drill article is due to the fact that the image which is displayed is already on the United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon article and does not display any "spectacular" spins or tosses. I was searching for possible replacements that would highlight this fact versus showing a very staged and small image of the Silent Drill Platoon infront of the Commadants quarters. -Signaleer 04:10, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

not a problem, but i think the article might benefit from showing more than rifle spins or tosses, thus the insertion of the "fan" formation pic. doesn't really matter if a pic is used in more than one article.-Robotam 14:40, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

How would it "benefit"? The image which you are proposing to use of the Silent Drill Platoon does not focus specificially on the members of the unit but also the Commadants quarters which I think detracts from the subject matter which is the exhibition drill. -Signaleer 14:46, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Respectfully disagree. The pic appropriately shows different setting of exhibiton drill, whether it be competition, Twighlight Tattoo, Evening Parade, Battle Colors Ceremony, or The Old Guard performing their soloists routine during the Army's 231st Birthday celebration.-Robotam 14:56, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
Then we can agree to disagree that the photograph you are proposing to use is appropriate for the section. -Signaleer 07:03, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

The Mediation Cabal: Request for case participation
Dear Robotam: Hello, my name is NicholasTurnbull; I'm a mediator from the Mediation Cabal, an informal mediation initiative here on Wikipedia. You've recently been named as a dispute participant in a mediation request here:
Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2007-06-29 Infobox Fraternity

I'd like to invite you to join this mediation to try to get this dispute resolved, if you wish to do so; note, however, it is entirely your choice whether or not you participate, and if you don't wish to take part in it that's perfectly alright. Please read the above request and, if you do feel that you'd like to take part, please make a note of this on the mediation request page. If you have any questions or queries relating to this or any other dispute, please do let me know; I'll try my best to help you out. Thank you very much. Alpha Phi Alpha members[edit]

I guess when you read this you'll be break from from your wikibreak. I am working on getting the List of Alpha Phi Alpha brothers to become a Feature Article List. I have created the format and now trying to update each member with the chapter they pledge into and also provide a source that confirms they are an Alpha, and also a source that confirms the item(s) why the person is notable. I would appreciate any assistance you can provide. Some of the current references may be useful, since I haven't gotten to all the catgories. BTW-the sources don't need to be online, it can anything even a local banquet programs which contains person;s name as a member. Also, if you too busy to help, that's okay too.--Ccson 04:25, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Montford Point Marine Association[edit]

Hi, Robotam. As previously discussed, the content of the Montford Point Marine Association article is currently immaterial to the article's title. If you are able to add information to the article relevant to its title, then the merger tag can be removed from the article page. Otherwise, I'll merge the information into the Montford Point article within five days, assuming such action does not violate the GFDL. Please let me know what you think. Cheers. – Liveste 06:51, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

The merger tag has been removed per your revision. Nice article, by the way. – Liveste 02:20, 11 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, I have a lot more information and scanned pics in another location, so this will have to do for now.-Robotam 12:59, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Hip hop v hip hop music[edit]

Hi there, I've started a vote on the merger of the above at [[6]] directly beneath your recent comments. Could you vote, following the format that I've used under your own heading. As you probably know, anyone can express a view on this - one of the great things about Wikipedia. This needs to be sorted quickly as new editors keep adding re-directs, trying to seperate the article, moving the name and so on causing real confusion. I believe there should only be: hip hop music, and hip hop culture. Otherwise new eds will go to hip hop and assume it's solely about music and start changing it without realising there's a separate article. Thanks. Regards. Escaper2007 16:50, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Good move---you may want to clarify your suggestion (in the Rfc) as being a merge that results in two articles: hip hop music, and hip hop culture.-Robotam 16:58, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Have a look at my proposal per above Escaper2007 17:03, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
sorry, I meant clarify on the Rfc section of the talk page. I'm fine with merging Hip hop & Hip hop music (with Hip Hop becoming a disambig page); although I am not fine with the current Hip Hop music page, which is...sorry, a mess.-Robotam 17:19, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Ok I'm out of time, but why don't you vote anyway, it'll all start to look a little clearer then.Escaper2007 17:22, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Robotam: Why do you think you are the arbitrator of the hip hop pages? Why would you revert a page back a great length of time, wasting all the edits and effort many people have put into it, not to mention all the votes cast in an election you enacted? Nowhere in that discussion do I see anyone else agreeing with you suggestion about switching all that information around. Why do you insist on complication? Why do you assume you know more about hip hop than anyone? I do not seek answers to these questions, so don't waste your time writing me some long and preachy harangue about being nice on wikipedia, because I won't read it. I am not obligated to be nice in everything I do, I am only obligated to be sincere. I'm done with these hip hop pages.Cosprings 19:34, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Beta members[edit]

I have added some of the names for your list of notable Beta members. Lawrence Ross, author of The Divine Nine posted a comment on my talk page about adding LeRoi Jones, who was initiated at Beta. Ross provided a link of Beta Lines but I still couldn't Jone's name and I don't believe he was listed in your link of notable beta member. Can you provide some insight and a possible web site so I can add this name?--Ccson 04:51, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Never mind, Ross updated my userp page that Jones/Baraka is an eternal Sphinxman from Howard in this text

Bro. Ross again. I decided to go to Amazon and search inside Amiri Baraka's autobio and see what I could find. As it turns out, he does talk about being a Sphinxman, but ultimately not being initiated into Alpha. His perspective on pledging is both humorous, a lot sad and pretty modern, by the way, considering the experience he details at Howard.

Many are called. . .--Ccson 04:45, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, i did not know what do do since im a tad bit new here, so read before you take off, why'd you delete the page?? Huh?? message me back[edit]

Hi--I didn't delete the article (which I don't have authority to do), but I did tag it. the explanation below was left on your talk page:
A tag has been placed on Brandon Mau's Halloween, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because it is an article about a certain website, blog, forum, or other web content that does not assert the importance or significance of that web location. Please read our criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 7 under Articles, as well as notability guidelines for websites. Please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources which verify their content.

The way it works is that if an article appears to fail certain criteria for inclusion in Wikipedia, it may be tagged for review by a Wikipedia Administrator, who then either decides to keep or delete the article. In this case, the article was deleted as non-notable. Nothing personal, and not a mark against you as the article's creator, since we try to assume good faith when dealing with the edits of others on Wiki. I hope that you stick around to contribute to Wikipedia. Thanks!-RoBoTamice 15:54, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Sockpuppet claim[edit]

Hi, Sorry, I don't have any proof other than the argument that the nature of the edits and the edit summaries by User:IslamForEver2 bore surprising resemblance to those ones from that of the IP editor. My intention was to alert an admin who could then check the IP of User:IslamForEver2 to see whether my suspicion is correct or to bring in a semi-protection for the article, banning newly registered users. The user was not willing to discuss anything and so the usual channels of dispute resolution was not going to work. The user also repeatedly ignored any pleas to read basic guidelines(like NPOV, No weasel words etc.) Thank you Zencv Lets discuss 21:29, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

Hip hop music[edit]

Robotom, you are the only one who objects to getting rid of this terrible, unsourced, unprofessional hip hop music article, which poorly attempts to duplicate the roots of hip hop, golden age hip hop, old and new school, and main hip hop articles. It is totally unnecessary and a hindrance on the improvement of the other articles. As soon as I redirected it to hip hop, the main article was edited many times and started to improve. Splitting up the subject only makes each of the other articles worsen. I cannot see how you could possibly think this is the best way for the subject to be organized. You need to back down on this issue, because everyone disagrees with you and your tyrannical treatment of the article is disappointing. Cosprings (talk) 13:49, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

APA Article[edit]

Some questions about the recent additions to the Alpha Phi Alpha article by a newer user. I think these are rather peacock-ish and unnecessarily extend the length of the article to add trivial information, but as you're a major contributor to it, I'll defer to your judgment. You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Wikipedia Reviewer.svg

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:45, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Information.svg Hello Robotam! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot notifying you on behalf of the the unreferenced biographies team that 1 of the articles that you created is currently tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 3,219 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Explain[edit]

Explain to me how is it was disruptive when in fact it's true. B-Machine (talk) 14:44, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

  • "In Fact" is the operative point. As in verifiable, reliable. Otherwise, your opinion or belief (which run counter to the majority of verifiable, reliable sourced material in the article) is just that, your personal opinion or belief. And when you continously inject your personal opinion or belief into articles with no verifiable, reliable citation or sources, that act is disruptive, per WP:DISRUPT. -RoBoTamice 20:28, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

RoBoTam you were very helpful to me in edits on Alphonso Jackson, thank-you. Recently, I have been dialoguing with an anonymous editor who has added a lot of old information. Our initial talk was contentious. I have not deleted any of Anon's edits. My concern is that a few edits seem overkill on controversies and the use of names, some deceased. If you have time ,please review and advise me. Thank-you telloucTtellouc (talk) 11:57, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
