The Telegraph is an English-language broadsheet daily newspaper in India founded in 1982 and published by the ABP Limited (an enterprise of Ananda Publishers). In 2008, with a circulation of 484,971 it was certified by Audit Bureau of Circulations to be the fastest growing daily in eastern India.[1] According to Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2008 the Telegraph is the fourth most-widely read English newspaper in India (after Times of India, Hindustan Times and The Hindu) with a readership of 2.9 million.[2] According to National Readership Survey (NRS) 2006 the newspaper has a readership of 746,000 in Calcutta.

The Telegraph mainly published from eastern India is noted for its extensive coverage of Indian foreign policy and its focused reporting on India's troubled North-East. The Telegraph is also published from Guwahati (to cater to the entire northeast), Siliguri (for North Bengal and Sikkim), Jamshedpur, and Ranchi (for Jharkhand).[3] The Telegraph comes with five editions Calcutta edition, South Bengal edition, North Bengal edition, Northeast edition (Guwahati split), Jharkhand edition (Jamshedpur, Jharkhand and Ranchi splits).[4]

History

The Telegraph was founded on July 7, 1982. The designer director of Sunday Times, London Edwin Taylor designed the newspaper provided a standard in design and editing. In 26 years, it has become the largest circulated English daily in the eastern region published from Calcutta. In 1982, M J Akbar the current editor-in-chief of Asian Age used to edit and designed the daily newspaper thus it had a major impact on newspaper journalism in India.

The Telegraph is published by media group Ananda Publishers closely associated with ABP Pvt. Ltd, the group also published Anandabazar Patrika (a Bengali language newspaper) since 13 March 1922. Apart from newspapers the group even published Bengali and English periodicals like Anandamela, Unish-Kuri, Sananda, Anandalok, Desh magazine, Businessworld, The Telegraph in Schools and Career.

Supplements

The Telegraph today offers, in addition to its extensive national, international, and business news a wide variety of reading material on special interests. In weekdays the Kolkata edition of the newspaper comes with 35 to 45 pages including all supplements and on weekend it comes with 60 pages.

The Kolkata edition of the newspaper has a daily 16 pages color supplement (in tabloid format) called T2. Five days a week the T2 mainly talks about fashion, food, films, television, arts, culture and everything young. The Telegraph has introduced 8 pages color section called Metro devoted solely to Calcutta and its people. This appears from Monday to Sunday. Apart from local news the Metro also reports on the social and cultural events in the city. On every Sunday Telegraph includes a matrimonial section.

Regular supplements of Telegraph Kolkata edition include:

  • Knowhow (Monday) - a two-page section on science, computers and health.
  • Jobs (Tuesday) - a tabloid on jobs available, on how to approach interviews with interviews on those succeeded and those who take interviews.
  • Telekids (Wednesday) - an exciting eight-page color tabloid for children.
  • CareerGraph (Thursday) - a special four-page color guide for students and graduates on the lookout for jobs and career opportunities.
  • Proper TT (Friday) - a one-page section with information related to property and real estate.
  • Personal TT (Saturday) - four pages of entertaining weekend reading in color.
  • Graphiti (Sunday) - a thirty-two page color magazine. In addition there is a seven-page section called 7days and four pages of The Telegraph Classifieds in color.

Subscription policy and pricing

People in West Bengal usually don't read Telegraph as a result the newspaper was losing readership and unable to compete with other English newspapers, therefore ABP group started offering Telegraph and Anandabazar Patrika in a joint subscription for half-yearly or yearly payment at a cheaper price.[5] Also the group provides some exciting prizes for customers who wants subscription of their popular periodicals or newspapers in half-yearly or yearly payment.

Price of The Telegraph from Monday to Saturday is Rs 2.50 and on Sundays the price is Rs 5.00.

The newspaper is the first to use run-of-press colour and the first in India to win prestigious global print awards like the SNAP and IFRA.
