:: Replying here, per the note at the top of your talk page.
:: The problem is, updating Katrina is very complicated due to three factors. The first one is just the overwhelming abundance of information. Trying to pick and choose what to write and what not to write would carry a bit of risk of giving undue weight to something. That is something that ideally would be based on several books going in large depth about the topic, not just picking and choosing websites.
:: Secondly, and more importantly, the long-term effects of Katrina are still not completely known, particularly the political and social effects. While that's not an adequate reason for not writing anything, it would mean we need to refresh the page a year or so from now, after the elections.
:: Finally, and most importantly for me, the available time I have to do anything on Wikipedia is asymptotically approaching <math>\lim_{x\to \infty}\frac{1}{x}</math>. While I'd like to work on the article, I see no way I can do that anytime soon. I can probably help out a little bit, but I don't have the time to do the heavy researching or writing tasks that this article requires. Embargoed

Sorry if I am putting this in the wrong place. I noticed you deleted an article I put up about the HR group embargoed. As there was not enough background information. Embargoed features fairly regularly in the Turkish Cypriot press, http://www.londragazete.com/popup.php/cat/19/news/11325/PageName/English_News And has recently been given backing by the Communications workers union in the UK. http://www.hri.org/news/cyprus/tcpr/2007/07-05-03.tcpr.html#10 Notable supporters include Baroness Lunford http://www.sarahludfordmep.org.uk/pages/campaigns.html

Surly this would qualify for the article to be reinstated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SolDrury (talkcontribs) 13:06, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image thumbnail for A class

Hi, I had a Idea about the little Image Thumbnail for FA and GA class article's and I saw that you know a lot about this stuff. So I am hopeing you can Help me with my Idea. FA class has a barnstar and a GA class has a round stamp, but none for the "A" class article. I thought that there could be a little Thumbnail for class A article's like the others, this may help motivate some people to work harder to get there article form GA up closer to FA class, because I know for many people the Jump from GA to FA class is a big one that requires a lot of work and more knowledge of the subject and Wikipedia. I see so many people with the little FA and GA Thumbnail pic's, on there user page showing off how many articles they have worked on and such. they have become a little like the Barnstars people give one another, becoming a little like s bag of merit or some thing. I think Wikipedia most Valuable resource would be the people that edit it, more than just the people that edit one line of text, but the people that have passion for a subject and given the right positive reinforcement will become vary productive Wikipedians. So what I would like is to have a "Talk" about this with other Wikipeadia members who may have ideas or experence with some thing like this, Do you think you could help me out? Max 14:55, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ok, no top-right stars or any thing like that. But if we expanded the Article classes to include A and B class, can we then start tracking the number of A and B class article’s? I was just thinking this because it shows how many FA Article’s there are in relation to all of Wikipedia’s Articles. Now If we could know the numbers of article’s in the different Article graded classes we could start using the numbers to track Wikipedia’s Quality Growth and completeness. Wikipedia has to be proud to have 1,745,000 article’s, But at the same time start to improving what we have By developing a better “System” of Grading that reaches all across Wikipedia pages and sections, with standard criteria that helps move Wikipedia away from rapid expansion and dissimilar criteria to a Grading system that helps make the focus on the Quality of Wikipedias work a Top Priority . I think it would also be helpful because more articles would be peer reviewed, helping to avoid the negative attention Wikipedia gets when Articles are found to be slandering a person or un-encyclopedic. The more Popular Wikipedia Becomes the more the need grows for Wikipedia to be seen as a creditable source of Knowledge. With an Expanded Article Grading System the growth of Wikipedia will be in the right Direction, no longer the massive spreading out, but focusing on Increasing the Quality. 2006AHS

I reverted the importance drop you made to this particular article. Reason is seasonal articles are fairly important to the project, in of and as of themselves. This means all post-1950 seasons (when they have an individual article) are at least mid-class. Given that, any change to the uninteresting seasons should go to project talk, but my opinion is that they should stay at least mid-class, due to significance to WPTC (much more so than the typical low-class storm).--Nilfanion (talk) 15:48, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Titoxd: I'm done copyediting the above. I did leave a few inline comments; one of my concerns was the passive sentences to the effect that "Dvorak classifications began to be employed...". They need to start with who used them, not for fact's sake but for readability. I find the article jargony, but that would need to improved by someone familiar with "convection" and storm "organization" and such. I hope this has helped your FAC bid. –Outriggr § 02:59, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

When is a talk page discussion considered current on wikipedia?

I'm under the impression that as long as a discussion is still located on a talk page, and not an archive, that it is still active. Some articles get very little traffic for months at a time. Is this idea incorrect? I'd rather not have this type of conversation on wikipedia on the regular basis. It may be revealing about the people involved in the discussion, but it does distract us from contributing. Thegreatdr 06:31, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[2]Chacor (RIP 32@VT) 14:54, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Chacor wrote - I'd like mention here that we've pretty much tried everything with Storm05, but he hasn't improved - in fact, his writing has actually gotten worse since we've been giving him advice. Encouraging him is going to cause him to continue to write bad articles that have either no content or could have copyright issues (in fact, he was blocked a couple months ago for uploading copyvio images and asserting that they were public domain). Storm05 isn't the most civil editor around, either - he is extremely confrontational and has been warned and blocked for as much.
Perhaps slander was too strong of a word for this passage. I thought it was bad form to write about other contributors to the project like this. Despite Chacor's comments, my intent was not to pressure him away of wikipedia, just be more respectful. =( Thegreatdr 01:42, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Since the thread appears to have moved to my talk page: Indeed, "slander" was probably not the wisest choice of words, but I agree with you that it being an old thread is not an excuse. MediaWiki problem

I almost got transwiki working, however, I can only transwiki from my other local MediaWiki installation and not any Wikimedia project. Here's the code from my LocalSettings.php:

/**
 * List of interwiki prefixes for wikis we'll accept as sources for
 * Special:Import (for sysops). Since complete page history can be imported,
 * these should be 'trusted'.
 *
 * If a user has the 'import' permission but not the 'importupload' permission,
 * they will only be able to run imports through this transwiki interface.
 */
$wgImportSources = array('commons' => 'commons',
'wikibooks' => 'wikibooks',
'w' => 'w',
'wp1' => 'wp1');

'wp1' refers to another wiki on my localhost - however, when I try to import from Wikimedia Commons, Wikibooks, or Wikipedia (defined as 'w' in my interwiki, it says "Couldn't open import file".

what do I need to do to fix this?? Thanks, --SunStar Net talk 20:50, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Tropical Storm Jerry (1995)

The article Tropical Storm Jerry (1995) you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold. It hasn't failed because it's basically a good article, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Tropical Storm Jerry (1995) for things needed to be addressed. Merzbow 03:49, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania 2007?

Hi Tito, I won't be able to go to Wikimania this year - last year the conference was about 8 miles from where I was teaching, this year it's more than 8000 miles away. I don't think I can just pop out of class to go to Taiwan. The organizers would really like to have someone giving a presentation on the 1.0 project, and it seems to me that you would be the best choice - very few people know as much about the "inside" of the project. OK, so Taipei is quite a distance, but I think you'd have a great time if you can go. As for finances, I think there is a lot of financial support for people in your position, I wouldn't be surprised if you could get all of your costs covered (that's a guess, nothing more!). So PLEASE think about going!

Last year it was a fantastic place to "network" - it was like a dream come true to sit down to lunch with Anthere, Delphine, Kirill, Kelson (French WP1.0) and Tomasz (Polish WP1.0) all grouped around the same table! As you can see from that list, many people traveled thousands of miles to attend, but the contacts made have proven critical for the development of the 1.0 project.

Also, I haven't forgotten your request for more background stuff on the 1.0 project to blog about. I've been very busy over the last month, but this task has risen to near the top of my "to-do list." If there's a specific topic you want me to comment on, please let me know. Once we get MartinBotII working, I'd love to see a blog on that - I think it's very exciting, quite groundbreaking actually. You've done a great job so far - you write really well! Cheers, Walkerma 17:36, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Review work for Version 0.7

Hi Tito, I know you're busy, but the release & subsequent press coverage of Version 0.5 is giving us some new people at the 1.0 team, including some people signing on as reviewers. As one of our few experienced reviewers still around, do you think you could help out a bit at Wikipedia:Release_Version_Nominations, and also welcome/guide our newbies? V0.7 has been in the doldrums for a long time, but this could give it the kick it needs to get going nicely - and with all the press exposure we need to make sure that it does. There's no turning back now! I'm really busy at work still, and much of my spare time is spent dealing with the PR part of things. I'd really appreciate some help, even if it's just for a few days. Thanks! Walkerma 06:22, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply on my talk page. Sorry you can't go to Taipei, but I understand, esp. as I'm teaching summer classes. Maybe we'll coax you out to the East Coast some time, at least!?
As for reviewing, I don't think anybody needs to review 500 articles. It's just critical that we have some activity. In WP I have learnt that activity breeds activity. If nothing happens for two weeks after you first sign on the Review Team or 1.0 team, you'll think, "This place is dead, I won't waste my time." And you're right, this is a critical time. I'll pitch in a bit too. Once the media frenzy dies down, and things quieten down at work (hopefully after this weekend things should get less silly), I will be able to help more. I'll have a go at writing some stuff for you this weekend. My last exam is May 18.
What do you think of User:VeblenBot/Version_0.7/MainTable? I think having separate tables for our ten categories is fantastic (click on a category to see each one). This is exactly what I wanted to see when we put categories into the template. This is all on WP 1.0 Bot's birthday, too! Meanwhile over in chemistry, a major molecule editor company is now writing Wikipedia-friendly patches, to allow us to draw a structure, then automatically generate a PNG file in Wikipedia format containing InChI as metadata. We live in exciting times! Cheers, Walkerma 05:05, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for helping out with some reviewing, I've been buried with stuff! I had a great chat with Emmanuel today, though. If your French is up to it, let me know if you fancy a trip to Paris this fall. Walkerma 04:28, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Titoxd. On the global warming FAR you noted the article "needs to have some sort of discussion about political and societal effects of GW." I agree with you and tried to add some myself in the last few sections; I don't think it needs a lot given all the sub-articles, but at least a nod in predictable directions. Ref formatting has also been taken care of. Do you feel it is improved wrt to 1b and 1c? Marskell 08:36, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hola Titoxd

--Pediaknowledge 03:06, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Atacarlos aquí no te ayudará mucho. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 03:09, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

--Pediaknowledge 01:03, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

IPA Template

I believe you closed the discussion on {{User ipa}} far too early. Others may be interested in commenting, and I certainly had responses to those comments that came after mine. Plus, the consistency argument is flawed. If it makes no sense to have an N-level for writing systems then we should delete all N-level boxes for writing systems. That it would be a lot of work is no argument against this. I've been overhauling philosophy of time and related pages for months, slowly doing research and making minor alterations. I'm sure many others have done long-term projects, as well. That's our job as editors. Postmodern Beatnik 16:56, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

re:Civility warning

Titoxd, with all due respect, you should be made aware of the innumerable amounts of incivility that Dev has shown during the debate. She has refused to accept any piece of evidence that I presented to her, she has an ageist attitude against me, she has called me immature, etc. Surely anyone would understand that both of us are guilty of incivility to an extent. The Esperanza debate has been drawn out for too long.--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 18:44, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Last I checked, not agreeing with someone's "evidence" was not considered incivility. Nor, so far as I know, is pointing out that most 14 year olds act like the egocentric children they officially are. I respect the few who aren't immature - witness DoomsDay349 and Shreshth91 - but we don't allow 14 year olds to smoke, drink, marry, serve or vote for a reason. They aren't fully developed. To point out that a child is immature and acts like a child is hardly ageist, unless every psychologist, parent, government, and the UN are all ageist. DevAlt 19:29, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Check the nutshell box on WP:CIVIL. It says, "Do not ignore the positions and conclusions of others." That's basically what you're doing. And, oh, what? Orphaned non-free image (Image:Jimbo_deleted.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:Jimbo_deleted.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. What I can do is use the move feature to carry the "Held Article Discussion" page over to the "Held nominations" page, since the Held Nom page seems to be pretty obsolete and inactive. Would that be alright? Diez2 17:15, 2 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Missing image file

Hi Tito, I notice that , which is used in the 1.0 template when an article is "orphaned", appears to be missing. Can you see what happened to it? It seems to be used on lots of articles.

Sorry you missed IRC, I can send you the transcript if you wish. Walkerma 03:12, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for your work in merging and cleaning up. I also see that the sad face has reappeared just above - thanks for the explanation.
As you know, on WP no good turn gets forgotten, so...We have a minor technical problem at WP:Chem (see this and this) that you may be able to help with (if you're too busy, I understand). If you can see the solution - probably quite quick - I'd appreciate it. We have a problem with InChIs and SMILES strings being often too wide, blowing up the info box. We need these to be found by Google searches intact, so our traditional approach of sticking <br/> in the middle wrecks it. My "solution" is a show/hide, which ideally should blend in with the infobox, and be hidden by default. I attempted this using my cut-paste-don't-know-what-I'm-doing approach, and got one which does the job, but looks ugly (background doesn't match, and show is the default). You can see it at User:Walkerma/Sandbox3, and in use at User:Walkerma/Sandbox4. If there is an easy fix for this that you can see, I'd appreciate it! If not, I understand. Many thanks, once again, Walkerma 03:57, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good! Thanks a lot! I'll try it in an article or two, to see if it works. I appreciate your help, the chemists aren't really familiar with this type of thing, though we do have some great template writers. Thanks. Walkerma 04:38, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Meetup

Hey, I wonder how much interest you think there might be in a Wikipedia meetup in Phoenix. --Spike Wilbury 21:39, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the above image, you removed the orphaned fair use deletion tag I applied. Your edit summary indicates that based on a discussion at WP:ANI that WP screenshots are considered free and not under fair use. I am unable to locate any such discussion using the search feature at ANI. As I understand it, the WP logo is not freely licensed and if included in an image, that would make the image non-free. Given the above noted image contains the logo, I tagged it for deletion. I know a number of WP screenshots were nominated by me as fair use orphans and subsenquently deleted. I would appreciate you pointing me to the discussions. Thanks.--User:Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr) 21:23, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I acually found a discussion about the template here and assume that is what your talking about. I would suggest to you that that discussion does not suggest the image is free. I think that the "answer" is, as quoted from Christopher Parham's reply, "Images that have the globe should probably also be tagged with {{Copyright by Wikimedia}}...Whatever it is, the template used for Wikipedia screenshots should make clearer that the logo, if it appears, cannot be used freely; for now I have tried to do that simply by bolding the relevant text." - bolding mine.--User:Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr) 21:37, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
FYI - I am going to nominate it at IfD as an orphan and make mention of our discussion - please participate. You will se the notification soon.--User:Gay Cdn (talk) (Contr) 23:02, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1.0 team

Hi Tito, Sorry to see that the Tropical Cyclone article didn't make it. Sometimes I think the process can be rather arbitrary, but it's the best process we have. When I read it (or at least the first half!) I didn't see much text needing copyediting.

As usual, I have a request - could you keep an eye on things over at WP:1.0 for the next week or so? I'm going away, and I'm not sure if I'll have internet access (possibly for part of the time). I'd be very grateful if you could handle any issues that arise, and keep WP:V0.7N reviews ticking over (Funpika, Ozgod & others have been helpful with these). Hopefully MartinBotII will be able to come online soon - do you know anything about the toolserver updrade? Please let me know, Walkerma 05:12, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since you seem to be on break yourself, I'll contact John Carter & User:Ozgod. I hope all is well with you, and that you come back refreshed. All the best, Walkerma 03:57, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Tito, since we don't have Nilfanion around right now, I figure you're the next best guy to go to for infobox coding.

WT:WPTC#Indian_Ocean_tropical_cyclones_-_1-minute_sustained_winds - The IMD uses 3-minute winds, we need to include this in the infobox. The categorisation at the top of the infobox for the IMD would show the storm's strength on the IMD scale (2007 North Indian Ocean cyclone season), maybe with the corresponding colour in the background?

Let me know if you can do it, or if we should, as Core just suggested in IRC (and Hink just seconded) - inform him (Nilfanion) and beg him to come back from wikibreak? ;) Chacor 02:17, 23 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Consolidation of powers

Hi Tito, I am unsure if you're questioning why I feel that a "separation of powers" is a good system for an organization like Wikipedia, or what I think have been problems with the system as is. For the latter, I actually think Essjay is a fine example. Would his deception have been so acute if he did not wear so many hats? Would it have upset so many people? The answer, I think, is no. If he had been just a bureaucrat, or just an ArbCom member, he would have been asked to step down, and we all probably would have gone back to editing. It's because he was one of the most trusted editors in the community, that it was such a fiasco. Why even put ourselves in the position of having a super-elite of most-trusted users? There are hundreds if not thousands of incredibly trustworthy editors at Wikipedia.

So given there are so many trusted users, why not spread it around? A system where there are lots of checks is a stabler system. Why put all our eggs in one basket, when we have so many baskets available? --JayHenry 22:55, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You raise a lot of interesting points, particularly with respect to a rigid and a fluid system of checks and balances. But see, I don't think people should have to pick "career paths" either. First, because in my opinion, all of our careers should be as encyclopedists. Second, if a bureaucrat would like to be on ArbCom, I think that's actually great. I think rotation is important in these roles. But if elected to ArbCom, I think that user should step down as bureaucrat. Definitely I think it's good for people to move around. So third, if a user is going to burnout because they feel that they need to be a bureaucrat and an arbcom member and a checkuser at the same time? Well, frankly, I don't trust a user like that in any of those roles. (And please note, there's a difference between a user who would like to serve in multiple roles, and one who needs to in order to be happy with the project.) As for the point about the Signpost, I think it just depends on what a person would like the Signpost to be. I'd like to see it as an independent, neutral check. And yes, I think this has the potential for COI, and even if unlikely, I just don't see a need to put ourselves in that position. I'm aware my viewpoint is a minority, but hopefully it's not "baffling" even if you do happen to disagree. --JayHenry 00:19, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: database & renames

Interesting! Thanks for the explanation. So you're saying that, if a user made an edit, it was deleted, and the user was renamed, that deleted edit would still be assigned to the user's original name? Wouldn't that make a big problem if some old revisions were ever restored post-rename of a user involved? Andre (talk) 01:02, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Akai's page article almost all gone by user GlassFET

User:GlassFET feels that the Akai article is not well referenced and therefore, almost everything must go. It all started when he deleted a reference to a manual that gives reference to an Akai machine listed there and he converted it into a "footnote". As a contributor, I didn't object. I asked him why though, he said, because the manual is copyrighted, so I didn't object to that answer but felt a "footnote" was probably not needed. Then he erased the word "broke ground" and re-arranged the paragraph (See: [3] and his edits [4]) from the unit's paragraph because there was no reference that can verify that it did "break ground" as a porta studio of its time (1985). So, I found one ref, he dismissed as "not notable" because the link was to a studio page. Then, he told me that I wrote the paragraph on that unit wrong. Which is untrue. I wrote it factual and with the right machine specs. He decided at that point that rather than look for better sources for references, the article should be drastically trim down for lack of references. I think this user wants to meet Wikipedia standards, but also wants to incite me into to losing my civility and to disrupt the normal development of the Akai article. Can you help by making any comments? Thanks. 19:48, 22 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Greatest Hurricane Seasons of All Time

Hink and I thought this would be kind of fun. We're going around to some of our resident hurricane enthusiasts and asking them the same question: Worldwide, which season of what basin do you think earns the title 'The Greatest Season of All Time'. List your top five picks with a reason for at least your number one pick. It's not a big deal, but I thought it would be fun and interesting to hear what some of those really into it think. (By the way, nice picture on your userpage. I was just at Bryce Canyon over the summer. It really is an amazing place.) -- §HurricaneERICarchive 22:03, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

CVU-TF Template

Hi Tito, and thanks for all the work you've done for the Task Force. Since StatusBot doesn't create each user's status page until the next round of updates, new Task Force members are often displayed with an error message, which breaks the table. Would it be possible to modify the code so that it adds the box, but shades it in a different color to indicate that no status information is available? Cheers! --Ratiocinate (tc) 15:23, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've taken the liberty to edit your code. Basically, I've changed it from:
if StatusBot Status page exists
      begin table
      switch Status page
             case 'online': background green
             case 'offline': background grey
             default: background yellow
      rest of table
else
Error: Status page does not exist

to:

begin table
if StatusBot Status page exists
      switch Status page
            case 'online': background green
            case 'offline': background grey
            default: background yellow
else
      background red
rest of table
Of course, feel free to change it if you so desire, or revert my changes if you dislike them. Cheers! --Ratiocinate (tc) 02:17, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Chacor / Erin talk page

I'm beginning to wonder if action within Wikipedia needs to be taken. Here is a portion of the Erin talk page which Chacor has been insisting on removing. How does this violate any wikipedia rules? He's claiming vandalism, trolling, and personal attacks. After reading the wikipedia related pages on those topics, any of those three looks like a significant stretch to me. If anything, I think Chacor may be guilty of flame war and personal attacks.

No Longer a TD

The HPC has stated that Erin is no longer a depression. For attempting to change the status, I got a nasty comment accusing me of vandalism from Chacor. Is this how the community is supposed to work or am I not "allowed" to make late-breaking changes to topics?

You called it a "landcane". That is clearly vandalism. – Chacor 03:06, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
This is not vandalism. It is an unofficial weather term that you are not familiar with. Google landcane or landphoon. 66.114.93.6 23:59, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
I am very familiar with the term, tyvm. The NWS did not refer to it as such. It is vandalism. – Chacor 10:34, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
So you are mirroring the NWS, despite there are multiple references on the web to the word landcane. However, with what's up on the article now; that describes it very well without using the forbidden word. I'm fine with that. But calling it vandalism is a bad decision on your part. You unnecessarly villainized the poor user. 66.114.93.6 07:45, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Thegreatdr 14:42, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tito, you should know that the IP was vandalising - you yourself warned it for vandalism. The IP trolled on the talk page, accused me of vandalism when I was properly reverting its own vandalism and warned him for it, and DR sides with the troll, also has made an attack against me. "If anything, I think Chacor may be guilty of flame war and personal attacks." How is this justified at all? Chacor 14:46, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wow. If the comment on infoboxes is a personal attack, we're all sunk. =) Thegreatdr 14:58, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I was unaware of the Dean attack. I'd been taking some time off until Erin, and thought its history was more interesting than Dean (just a personal view as I don't root on major hurricanes for obvious reasons). Anyhow, if the guy has a history of it, I could see how it could be interpreted as vandalism by those aware of the previous instances. However, I was unaware of the Dean instance and was just judging this one edit on its own merit, assuming good faith. Shouldn't good faith work both ways? Do perceived personal attacks deserve retribution on wikipedia? I don't think they do. I was very careful above in being non-commital about whether Chacor was guilty or not. I still don't know all the wikipedia nuances, even after 19 months. Thegreatdr 15:08, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"If anything, I think Chacor may be guilty of flame war and personal attacks." "I was very careful above in being non-commital" Really? Chacor 15:10, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I'm sorry you don't see it that way. I did not state that you were definitely guilty, I merely stated that you may be guilty. I wanted clarificaiton. Believe it or not, that still assumed some good faith. Thegreatdr 15:17, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, WHAT? You said I "may be guilty of flame war and personal attacks." That is NOT assuming good faith. Even if any random person doesn't agree with me in this discussion, surely he or she would agree with me that this claim is ridiculous. You can't accuse someone of personal attacks and say you were assuming good faith... Chacor 15:19, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have been restrained in making such a comment, even during the Dora incident (if we're going to use the past to haunt users on wikipedia). Some of your actions since last winter are consistent with my comment. None of us truly owns any of these pages. Why act as if we do? Thegreatdr 15:24, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have to say a lot, I'll do it in two sentences: I haven't made any attacks, I've tried to remain civil while under attack, I made an appropriate removal of trolling which has been reverted. I've been attacked multiple times - here, on my talk page and here for it, with vague references to me violating Wikipedia policy when I haven't. I don't know what the aim is here, but if this user is trying to drive me off Wikipedia he's pretty darn close. Chacor 15:33, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As have I. I should have chatted with Chacor for a while longer before bringing it to a third party's attention, but the situation seemed to be escalating anyway. Perhaps some cooling time was needed before bringing this to a third party. I don't think that would have changed the fact that everyone interprets the Wikipedia pages on civil, own, vandalism, and personal attacks differently., which seems to be at the heart of this disagreement. Thegreatdr 15:40, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You still claim you haven't made personal attacks when it's plain for all to see. I give up. You win. I'm out of here. Chacor 15:41, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Guys, come on

And all of this has to occur on the day where I need to drive four hours on a trip? :S Everyone, please chill out. I really believe this is a hurricane in a teacup. I have to walk out the door Real Soon Now, but I'll say this: Doc, I'm not sure the flame war comment was warranted, as Chacor was acting on good faith. Chacor: I'm not sure the "He's trying to drive me off Wikipedia" comment is warranted either; unless you can read his mind, please shut up. On a more general statement, not tied to any particular incident, and pointed to everyone, not just you two: I realize that everyone has users that he or she doesn't like. But if you can't like each other, then try everything to at least get along, no?

One thing does need to be said: WikiProject guidelines are supposed to be flexible. There is absolutely no reason to remove good-faith questions from talk pages, or to try to accuse users for making questions or suggestions. There is no need to say to personalize issues and tell users that they "should know better", accusing of original research, name-calling, and all other behavior that gives the appearance of WP:OWN. I see these problems more and more these days, and they are usually justified using unwritten style guidelines, which is not actually convincing, and does make it a WikiProject-wide WP:OWN issue. In many ways, I think that we need to revisit several of our guidelines, and decide whether they really are helpful or not.

I'm sorry I can't really try to hash this out today, but I recommend everyone to go to a barbecue or something similar and just relax. Tito, recommend moving this to project talk and discussing there as opposed to your talk. We are getting far too much instruction creep and to make it worse they are mostly unwritten so no-one really knows what the hell those project guidelines are any more! One comment aimed at all project editors WP:WPTC does not own 2007 Atlantic hurricane season or any other article, if we genuinely hold that perception it might be better to up-merge the project to meteorology and disband it.--Nilfanion (talk) 08:39, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Disbanding wouldn't actually fix anything, but I don't object to moving all this to WikiProject talk. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 00:47, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WP1.0 template

Tito, I hope you're well. I've held off bugging you, because I could tell you were busy, but I was wondering if you could do some basic fixes to the {{WP1.0}} template. The template generally works remarkably well, but there are just these few niggling details:

  • If you select v0.7=fail, it states, "This article is considered to fall outside the scope of the Version 0.7 test release," For example, if you look at Talk:Plastic, you failed it for low quality, not because it's outside the scope of the release (as part of WP:CORESUP, it's even within the scope for V0.5!). It has a red traffic light, which corresponds on Wikipedia:Release_Version_Nominations with a "fail on quality". Meanwhile, if one types in v0.7=held it gives the same statement, but with the yellow traffic light. Can you change the wording that results from v0.7=fail to say something like, "This article does not currently meet the quality requirements for an offline release. Please improve the article and renominate." (Is that OK?)
  • If you select v0.7=nom, it says, "This article has been reviewed by the Version 1.0 Editorial Team". Well, actually it hasn't been! See this example. Can you omit that section of the template, so it just reads "This article or list is a nominee for ...." ?
  • If you select WPCD=yes, it states that it is part of the 2006 Wikipedia CD Selection. But shouldn't this read 2007? If you look, say, at Talk:Athens it says it was in the 2006 release, but if you check here you can see it wasn't! This is probably because the same WPCD template was used for both the 2006 and the 2007 releases.
  • Should we have a nesting option (as there is with the other templates seen at Talk:Assyrian Church of the East)? This would stop people being irritated by our template being full-size. Or do you think our template should be kept separate from the project templates? (I'm happy to see it nested, myself, but I don't have strong feeling on it).

Please let me know what you think. Thanks a lot! Walkerma 02:07, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw this, it looks as if someone recently added the nesting feature! Walkerma 03:17, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Use of third person

Where your User page says, "For those who are wondering why this page is written in 3rd person, I'm practicing my formal writing so I can become a more active member/editor of Wikipedia", wouldn't it be that much more effective to say, "For those who are wondering why this page is written in 3rd person, the author is practicing his formal writing so he can become a more active member/editor of Wikipedia."?

Infobox hurricane current and other basins

Is there any way to get {{Infobox hurricane current}} to work for other basins and their relevant terminology? There have been cases of users adding incorrect or non-working infoboxes to season articles that the template doesn't yet work for, such as the NIO. Hi. The list is formatted like a List of topics, not at all like a List of basic topics. E.g. see List of basic biology topics vs List of biology topics. I'd suggest moving it back to the previous title, and reincluding the deleted information. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of topics vs Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics for details, or ask The Transhumanist. Thanks. --Quiddity (talk) 00:38, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The problem with that page is that it is excessively broad; the list, before I started chopping off stuff, included pages related to earthquakes and aviation which are not necessarily tied to meteorology. So, I was going to simply chop off the old page, and then refactor it to fit the basic topic format. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 16:35, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, my mistake about the deletions then. Ignore that part :)
I was essentially just wanting to point out the difference between the more alphabetical/comprehensive "list of topics" format, and the cheatsheet/reference-card "list of basic topics" format, in case you weren't already aware of them both. Do what thy will :)
I actually have a much larger write-up about the list/index problem, that I'll post at the pump sometime soon. I'll leave you a note here, when I do. -- Quiddity (talk) 19:21, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unexplained article move

Hi, Tito; I need to bring this to someone who understands the issue in Spanish. By moving it from the question mark to the explanation point (contrary to sources and with no discussion), the article is now POV, implying that the king demanded rather than asked (that it was an imperative rather than a query). All of the sources I have seen use a question mark, and since I'm not an admin, I can't move it back. I'm also not sure if I can post a request at Requested moves, since I don't know if CieloEstrellado will challenge. I'll also post to Jossi, since he speaks Spanish. I've given it a copyedit, fixing some small things here and there. Great observations! I moved on all of them. The biggest challenge came in the "Dissolutions" section. For one reason or another, the team didn't fare well after it relocated to Zanesville, never rising above third place in the short-lived Pennsylvania-Ohio-Maryland. Therefore, I couldn't find as much material on this phase of its development. More data was available on the team's manager, who is credited with discovering two pitchers who became stars of the major leagues. Please don't hesitate to let me know if this additional material seems out of place. Thank you, again, for the comprehensive review!

AWB Usage and mbar -> Mbar

I Could stop making this edit, however mbar (as it is linked throughout the hurricane related articles) Loads as Mbar and oddly redirects to Bar (unit) which is described as "The bar (symbol bar), decibar (symbol dbar) and the millibar (symbol mbar, also mb) are units of pressure." So as different as they may be they do appear to be the same. Slysplace | talk 01:33, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

hPa - Same scenario, I'll accept your harshness and tone however pointing out the mere typo created would have been a better suggestion, Changed setting to appease you to mbar (still fixing the redirect) and hPa Same scenario. Any other issues?Slysplace | talk 01:39, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
YOU dont have to do all the work, The attitude of many "wikipedians" That They Have To Do All The Work is so overplayed! Slysplace | talk 02:53, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Personally I can not believe a category with multiple featured lists and articles has so many duplicate wikilinks. However I have reconfigured my settings within AWB to perform accordingly to the proper terminology and have made again multiple edits within the Tropical Storm and Hurricane related articles. My intent was and is to assist in cleaning things up, including redirects. As for the odd behavior of an extra * in the External links sections I've found an odd but working solution. It appears that AWB searched for external links and add's the * as it see's fit and properly that is if == External links == is formatted properly. I'll continue to make usefull edits that benefit the articles, I will not however assist any longer with duplicate wikilink removal (in this or any other category) unless the article is fledgling. If you should have further concern contact me on my talk page.. Slysplace | talk 02:21, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I just saw your explanation on RockMFR's talk page. Are you certain that the redirect issue wasn't caused by this change (which you also reverted)? My understanding is that MediaWiki:Mainpage/en should only affect the label displayed within the English interface (and not the actual link). —David Levy 18:24, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tropical cyclones WikiProject Newsletter #12

Number 12, January 10, 2008

The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. This edition of the newsletter, after an extended hiatus, covers December 2007 and the first ten days of January 2008.

Please visit this page and bookmark any suggestions of interest to you. This will help improve monitoring of the WikiProject's articles.

Storm of the month

Tropical Storm Olga

Tropical Storm Olga was a rare Atlantic December tropical cyclone. The fifteenth named storm of the season, it developed near Puerto Rico on December 11, and quickly struck the Dominican Republic. There, it brought heavy rainfall and severe damage, and caused more than 40 deaths. Casualties were also reported in Puerto Rico and Haiti. The storm greatly weakened as it crossed Hispaniola, degenerating into a remnant low pressure area in the Caribbean Sea on December 13. The remnants of Olga passed near the Yucatán Peninsula before turning northward and bringing rainfall to Florida.

Categories and more The project has gone under somewhat of a revamping. We have a new, more realistic goal. The members list has been dropped from 89 to 34. This newsletter is to inform users of a change in policy with categories. Previously, an Atlantic and Pacific storm article would have both Category:Atlantic hurricanes and Category:Category 3 tropical cyclones. However, the two were combined, resulting in Category:Category 3 Atlantic hurricanes. The same is done with Pacific hurricanes. Tropical storm articles are dealt with either Category:Eastern Pacific tropical storms or Category:Atlantic tropical storms.

Hello,
I can see you are not really active at the moment, but as I spamming this list I included your talk page:
You are a volunteered copyeditor listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/volunteers and I'd be glad if you could have a look at the article Vädersolstavlan I just nominated for peer reviewing. My shortcomings in English most likely makes copyediting both necessary and easy.
Thanks

Request for peer review

Hi, I saw your name on the wikipedia:peer review volunteer page. I'm currently working on a science article called the Kardashev Scale, the page has gone through a lot of changes in the last 3 months, some of them reverts that I wish to overturn. I've sent out some notices to people who have worked on the page previously but I'm having problems getting open opinions and feedback. Their ideas about what they want the article to be about and look like are pretty set. I need outside opinion.

In my opinion the Kardashev scale has 3 primary interests:

  • 1) A benchmark used by Seti scientists in there search for extraterrestrials
  • 2) A catch-all vocabulary term for a scale used by scientists, in classifying advanced civilizations. This has important implications when speculating on sociological structures of advanced civilizations. But also, it is a necessary analysis when talking what about clues might be left behind or generated by alien species; which then might lead the the discovery of extraterrestrials.
  • 3) Because it is can be used for the speculation of advanced civilizations it is a magnet for those interested in science fiction. Not many science fiction writers actually talk about the scale or the power generated by fiction species in power(WATTS) terms, but science fiction enthusiasts are interested in the Kardashev Scale.

My primary goals are in advancing the content area of number 2 and diminishing the fictional content. After all, it is a scientific not a fictional topic. My secondary goals are to find and add published content on the extension of the scale. The feedback I have gotten is pretty much divided between goals 1 or 3. And I don't want to create a editing war!

So please read the article and the discussion page and tell me what you think!!

  • 1)Is the article presently fine the way it is?
  • 2)After you read it, did you get the impression that it was a science article or a science fiction article?
  • 3)Was it too long, too short, easy to understand?
  • 4)Was the article interesting, was it boring, did it feel jumbled or was it concise?
  • 5)What do you think might be needed to be added to this article, what do you think needs to be edited out?

Thx--Sparkygravity (talk) 18:39, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heroes peer review

I noticed that your user name was on the Wikipedia:Peer review/volunteers list. I was wondering if you could take some time out of your schedule to head over to the Heroes (TV series) talkpage and give us an honest peer review. The page has gone through some major changes in the last few months, and it would be fantastic if a prominent editor/contributor like yourself, could head over and give us at the Heroes Wikiproject some sound opinion and ideas on improvements for the page. We have all worked very hard at improving the page, and we need great outside, reliable and trustworthy users to come over and help us improve. I you are interested in joining the peer review discussion with other prominent users/contributors, much like yourself, please follow the link. Thank you very much for your help and your continued effort to improve Wikipedia and its quality! Storm of the month

Cyclone Gene formed on January 26 over the open south Pacific Ocean. It drifted southward, and strengthened into Tropical Storm Gene on January 28 as it moved across the Fijian archipelago. There, it brought heavy rainfall, which caused the worst flooding in several years. Half of the country was left without power, and the cyclone killed seven people in Fiji. The storm turned southwestward, developing a cloud-filled eye and quickly strengthening by the end of the month.

Other tropical cyclone activity

  • One tropical cyclone formed in the Western North Pacific Ocean west of The Philippines, which was analyzed by Japan Meteorological Agency as a depression; it tracked southwestward and did not significantly affect any land areas.
  • In addition to Cyclone Gene, Tropical Storm Elisa and Cyclone Fuma occurred in the South Pacific ocean during the month, along with three tropical depressions.
  • The only tropical cyclone in Australian region during the month was Tropical Cyclone Helen, which struck Australia.
  • Four tropical cyclones, three of which named, existed in the Southwest Indian Ocean during the month. The most notable was Cyclone Fame, which caused twelve deaths after striking Madagascar.

Wikiwork and 1000 articles In January 2008, the WikiProject began using a system called Wikiwork, or ω. It weighs the overall quality of the project's articles, and a lower number means a greater total quality. The weighed ω, as used above, is a relative number that can be used to compare groups of this article. As of this publication, the relative ω of the project is 3.404, corresponding to between Start and B class. However, when limiting it solely to storm articles, the number drops to 2.98, which is slightly better than B class. During the month, a new statistics page was created.

Additionally, during the month, Mitchazenia pointed out that we received our 1,000th article with the creation of Cyclone Elita.

Welcome back!

Wow, I got worried for a while after you fell off the face of Wikipedia. I'm not going to ask where you've been for the last two months, but I'm glad you're OK and you're back. :) ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:53, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I second that. It's great to see you haven't dissipated. (Okay, that's a bad pun;). Welcome back. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 06:25, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see you've fallen victim to the same "college thing" that I have. I keep telling myself I'm on hiatus to do schoolwork, but it keeps pulling me back in :-D Welcome back, as they say.-RunningOnBrains 14:12, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, thanks for thinking of me! I'll admit, I was patrolling recent changes, and it took me a while to find something rollbackable. Most of the anons editing were doing good things, and most actual vandalism was already reverted by the time I clicked on the page. But, I finally nabbed one. :) I'll be sure to use it carefully, though. ♬♩ Hurricanehink (talk) 05:29, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I too am glad to see you back. Raul654 (talk) 19:36, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and yes, count me in on the people saying "welcome back"! :) Acalamari 19:41, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's a good day, so glad to "see you" back again! SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:42, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback grantings

I noticed you've been granting rollback, and so I thought that you might want to know that two userspace template messages, User:Acalamari/Rollback and User:NoSeptember/Rollback, are available if you want to give an informing message to someone if you've given them rollback. Thanks. Acalamari 18:27, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, but for the record, User:Acalamari/Rollback was just moved to {{Rollbackgiven}} to make it more accessible to everyone, rather than just keeping it in my userspace. Acalamari 19:32, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback

Sorry its taken a bit to get back to you. I see you're getting to grips with the new functions. Implementation was rather controversial, with mixed views as to whether consensus was reached for the feature. ArbCom refused to hear a case about it. Both Jimbo and Anthere have commented on the implementation - Jimbo here and Anthere here if you're interested.

As to the practicalities of assignment, we seem to be seeing two views from admins. One believes that anyone who is not an idiot and hasn't abused the tool should be given rollback, the other regards it as purely an anti-vandalism tool to be given out to those involved in reverting vandalism (who have a demonstrated history of correctly identifying vandalism). I think the former is becoming the dominant view of those actively giving out the right. I do worry a little that this is creating a new class of user, rather than just assigning a new function and there has in my opinion been some fairly disappointing use of the function - giving rollback to users who have not asked for it and so not want it, admins giving themselves rollback when this does nothing and just makes it harder to keep track of who has the permission in the rights log, and the assignment of the rights to "joke" secondary accounts that clearly won't be involved in vandal fighting.

Ultimately, admins are selected for a demonstrated ability to make good judgment calls - if you believe someone will make good use of the rollback right, its probably a good idea to give it to them (though I recommend asking first...). WjBscribe 01:15, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please explain more fully?

Could you please explain more fully how the Mike Silver article got deleted?

The record shows you deleted it. But I don't see a record of where the discussion of its deletion occurred.

Was this article about the Mike Silver who was one of the participants in the controversial skirmish where Omar Khadr is alleged to have killed a GI?

Could you please userify this article, its edit history and talk page, to User:Geo Swan/Guantanamo/Mike Silver? I was going to expand the Mike Silver article with the new information about that skirmish, and I was very surprised to learn the article didn't exist, had once existed, and had been deleted.

Template:WP1.0/assessments

Certain projects (Wikipedia:WikiProject Philadelphia, for instance) are using Cat, cat, Dab, and dab as parameters for "class" to distinguish among various types of non-article pages. Unfortunately, Template:WikiProject Philadelphia uses Template:WP1.0/assessments to generate Pennsylvania article assessments for all of its pages, and so pages with those parameters are marked as "Unassessed" when they should be treated as "NA" pages. Would it be possible to include them in the swtich statement in the WP1.0 template? I thought I'd drop by and ask since you seem to have done the work for it. Hi Titoxd, Thanks, again, for your help on Jimmy McAleer! The FAC languished for more than a month, but I'm happy to report that the article was promoted. I just requested a peer review for a piece on movie mogul Jack Warner. The article includes a good deal of information, and it's reasonably engaging, but I know it can be improved. Hurricane Katrina

Hi Titoxd. Would you have time to have a look at these threads?

Thanks. Carcharoth (talk) 00:00, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Posted to the Wikiproject as well. Carcharoth (talk) 11:21, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Replying here, per the note at the top of your talk page.
The problem is, updating Katrina is very complicated due to three factors. The first one is just the overwhelming abundance of information. Trying to pick and choose what to write and what not to write would carry a bit of risk of giving undue weight to something. That is something that ideally would be based on several books going in large depth about the topic, not just picking and choosing websites.
Secondly, and more importantly, the long-term effects of Katrina are still not completely known, particularly the political and social effects. While that's not an adequate reason for not writing anything, it would mean we need to refresh the page a year or so from now, after the elections.
Finally, and most importantly for me, the available time I have to do anything on Wikipedia is asymptotically approaching . While I'd like to work on the article, I see no way I can do that anytime soon. I can probably help out a little bit, but I don't have the time to do the heavy researching or writing tasks that this article requires. Titoxd(?!? - cool stuff) 03:04, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
