:Yikes! Alt: ... that the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (pictured) is an antebellum village containing 13 historical buildings along with cemeteries and various ruins? Maury Markowitz (talk) 15:04, 21 January 2009 (UTC) |

:::Oppose to the ALT because I would like to get all 16 articles in the same hook, a record DYK for the Wikipedia:Did you know/Hall of Fame. All 16 articles are new articles that qualify. --Doug Coldwell <font color="darkblue">talk</font> 16:38, 21 January 2009 (UTC) |
|||
::::As I see it, the whole idea of DYK is to show new articles to readers. In this case a reader who is really interested in all 16 articles will find them all by reading the first. Even if that is not the purpose of DYK, I do know that the purpose of DYK does not include writing hooks in odd ways solely to get on a "hall of fame". Maury Markowitz (talk) 18:10, 21 January 2009 (UTC) |

::Would all of them even withstand an AfD? <font color="black">Grsz</font><b><font color="red"><sup>11</sup></font></b> 17:45, 21 January 2009 (UTC) |
|||
:::IMO, this game of trying to cram the largest possible number of articles into a single hook is contrary to the purpose of DYK. The original hook proposed here is much too large to have any useful value in attracting attention to interesting new articles. If this is what Wikipedia:Did you know/Hall of Fame leads to, then perhaps the Hall of Fame should be abolished. --Orlady (talk) 18:02, 21 January 2009 (UTC) |
|||
::::Second Orlady's comment. We have already been subject to some nasty criticism for perceived award-collecting behavior, and putting an overlinked mass on the Main Page just for one user's gratification would not be appropriate and would subject us to more unneeded wikidrama. (No intention there to offend you, Doug Coldwell—you've done impressive work here and, no matter what happens with this hook, we will still remember that you were able to write and nominate 16 articles at once—it's just that this kind of hook would not be beneficial for the DYK project or for readers.) |
|||
::::Besides, if you break this up into a couple hooks (assuming that a few of these article subjects are notable enough to be in a hook independent of Appomattox Court House National Historical Park), your articles would get more airtime and more attention. |
|||
::::Personally, I believe it would be better to merge all those sub-articles into Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (that might even make it a good candidate for FL or FA), but this is not the appropriate venue for that discussion; it might be worth discussing at that article's talk page, though. That kind of merge, though, would make the ALT hook fine. ::Suggest the below alternate hook of 14 articles which I believe would receive much airtime for all the articles involved, especially if it were to be the first hook in the Queue with its pictute. It isn't anything different than what has already been done for the 8, 9, and 11 article DYKs in the Wikipedia:Did you know/Hall of Fame. |

::Alt 2 ... that the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (pictured), where the American Civil War ended, contains period structures of the Old Appomattox Court House, house, Clover Hill Tavern, New County Jail, Jones Law Office, Woodson Law Office, Plunkett-Meeks Store, Bocock-Isbell House, Peers House, Mariah Wright House, Charles Sweeney Cabin, Sweeney-Conner Cabin and the Sweeney Prizery? 14 new articles, self nom by --Doug Coldwell <font color="darkblue">talk</font> 09:53, 22 January 2009 (UTC) |

::: Doug, you need an interesting fact to make a good DYK hook. The end of the American Civil War has nothing to do with most of your hook! --74.14.22.20 (talk) 16:35, 22 January 2009 (UTC) |

::Each of the period (Civil War) structures says in each article of that particular structure that the National Park Service says the structure is significant because it was in the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (then the village of Appomattox Court House) at the time General Lee surrendered to General Grant. The end of the American Civil War has everything to do with each of these structures. The National Park Service has restored each of these structures because of this significance and they are all part of this history (the end of the American Civil War). Some have more important significance than others. For example: the house is where Lee and Grant signed the surrender papers (picture of replica tables in the article). The Clover Hill Tavern is where the pardons (picture in the article of a typical parole) were printed for the Confederate soldiers, so they could return home with no hassle from others. --Doug Coldwell <font color="darkblue">talk</font> 19:46, 22 January 2009 (UTC) |
|||
::: Then put these interesting things in the hook(s), Doug! Neither of your proposed hooks explain what each item has to do with the American Civil War! Let's forget about the record and opt for hook quality, okay? --74.13.126.178 (talk) 07:26, 23 January 2009 (UTC) |

Why not save all 16 articles for 16 hooks in a special DYK (2 queues?) on April 9th, the anniversary of the end of the ACW? :::I tend to agree with Ottava Rima. These buildings are not independently notable, and should probably be merged into the article on the National Historic Park. I'm sure the next step will be going to Colonial Williamsburg and Dearborn Village and other similar places and breaking it down building by building (The Men's Restroom at Colonial Williamsburg ...). This may not be the ultimate in DYK game playing, but it's pushing it.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:43, 26 January 2009 (UTC) |

::::It is a bit of a mouthful and I ought to know. I recently submitted a 14 article hook which read much better than this (in that it wasn't a list of articles without any additional words), went off on one or two tangents and in the end was broken down into 9+5. On hindsight this was probably the best thing to do. If someone could come up with a decent string of independent articles that couldn't possibly be broken down, rather than a list of interconnected ones that could be broken down, that would be much more deserving in my opinion. It shouldn't be that records come before the type of content. --➨♀♂<span style="color:red">Candlewicke</span> <big><u>S</u></big><big><u>T</u></big> 20:15, 28 January 2009 (UTC) |

Revision as of 20:21, 30 January 2009
This page is for nominations to appear in the "Did you know" section on the Main Page.
Instructions
Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination.
DYK criteria
Sample DYK suggestion strings
Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.
- Nom without image:

- Nom with image:

- To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook:
|article2=
|article3=
|article4=
| (etc) - To include more than one author:
|author2=
|author3=
| (etc) - To include alternate hooks:
|ALT1=
|ALT2=
| (etc) - To add a comment:
|comment=
- To add the article you reviewed:
|reviewed=
- To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook:
Do not wikilink the article title, or the author username field; the template will wikilink them automatically. Do wikilink the article title in the hook field, however.
Do not add a section heading if you are using the template; the template will add one for you.
Do not include a signature (~~~~) after the template.
Do not use non-free images in your hook suggestion.
An example of how to use the template is given below:

- Note that you should only use one of the above templates for the original hook. If you want to suggest a second, alternative hook for the same article submission, just type it in manually. The above templates output useful code for each submission and if you employ them for alternative hooks, you will mess up the page formatting.
- When saving your suggestion, please add the name of the suggested article to your edit summary.
- Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
- If you nominate someone else's article, you can use to notify them. Usage: Thanks, ~~~~
Symbols
If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or that there is an issue with the article or hook, you may use the following symbols (optional) to point the issues out:
Symbol | Code | DYK Ready? | Description |
---|---|---|---|
| Yes | No problems, ready for DYK | |
| Yes | Article is ready for DYK, with a foreign-language or offline hook reference accepted in good faith | |
| Query | DYK eligibility requires that an issue be addressed. Notify nominator with
| |
| Maybe | DYK eligibility requires additional work. Notify nominator with
| |
| No | Article is either completely ineligible, or else requires considerable work before becoming eligible |
Please consider using on the user's talk page, in case they do not notice if there is an issue.
Backlogged?
This page often seems to be backlogged. If the DYK template has not been updated for substantially more than 6 hours, it may be useful to attract the attention of one of the administrators who regularly updates the template. See the page Wikipedia:Did you know/Admins for a list of administrators who have volunteered to help with this project.
Where is my hook?
If you can't find the hook you submitted to this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is in the queue for display on the main page. You can check whether your hook has been moved to the queue by reviewing the queue listings.
If your hook is not in the queue or already on the main page, it has probably been deleted. Deletion occurs if the hook is more than about eight days old and has unresolved issues for which any discussion has gone stale. If you think your hook has been unfairly deleted, you can query its deletion on the discussion page, but as a general rule deleted hooks will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

After expanding the article, nominating it for DYK and then reviewing the article's history, the article had been cut down to address a copyvio that left the stub that I expanded. The original version of the article, little changed since its creation early in 2006, appears to have been copied straight from this link. - I preserved the term used in the source. The only time I have heard of them (I study in the UK) they were just called filter beds but this manufacturer calls them percolating filter beds so perhaps it is a British only term. - That's the problem with obit writers, they're not chemistry or bio experts. xIf there is a reason to make an exception to Additional Rule A4, there is much precedent that a copyvio isn't such a reason (unless of course, we change that oft-controversial rule for everyone). Also, "this article is not exactly a 5x expansion", it's a 1.6x expansion. Art LaPella (talk) 20:38, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
- The article was a cut-and-paste from the two sources I've linked above. If I didn't rescue the article, it would have been deleted as a blatant copyright infringement. Are you saying that I should have just allowed the article to be deleted under G12, and then recreated it as a new article so that it would qualify for DYK? Cunard (talk) 21:14, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
- Well, yes. This argument has also been presented a couple times before (less politely as I remember), and yet A4 remains unchanged. I didn't write A4, but I know there is no consensus, and no time, for analyzing and debating the quality of each previous article version before determining how many of its bytes to count. Nor has there been a consensus for making an exception to A4 for copyvios. Wikipedia talk:Did you know is a better place to debate the rules. Art LaPella (talk) 05:49, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
- How 'bout this? Because I think it's worth encouraging people to save speedies on worthy subjects and removing copyvios, I am willing to delete the previous edits. That way history will show that it was started on Jan 25. Will that work? Renata (talk) 14:43, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
- I don't think so. This problem recurs regularly, so even if we agree with you, that would only fix the problem once at best. A more constructive solution would be a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Did you know, leading to a possible change to A4 to exclude copyvios. Art LaPella (talk) 22:37, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

- Of course it's not a requirement (Robert W. Floyd is another well-known example, and fine arts faculty usually have M.F.A.s) but in the sciences it's very rare, rare enough I think to be worth mentioning. The L.A. Times seems to agree; the second paragraph of their obit begins “An academic rarity who became a full professor without ever earning a doctoral degree.” Also, I think the rhythm of the hook works better with three clauses than with two, but if you prefer you could replace the third clause by "and was over 100 years old when he died". —David Eppstein (talk) 17:27, 26 January 2009 (UTC)
