Scottie Nell Hughes is an American journalist and political commentator. She was a paid CNN commentator during the 2016 presidential election, often speaking in support of presidential candidate Donald Trump.[1][2][3][4]
Career
Hughes began her career as an executive producer on the Steve Gill Show in Nashville, Tennessee.[5] With an established radio career, she went on to take producing positions with The Rusty Humphries Show, The Michael Berry Show, The Mark Skoda Show, and many others. She also was in the first group of radio talk show hosts sent by the Department of Defense to travel to the front lines of Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq and Kuwait, as well as the detention facilities at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. She has been a strong supporter of U.S. forces. [6] Scottie Nell is the former news director of the Tea Party News Network[7] and served as a political commentator for CNN until her contact expired in January 2017. She currently serves as political editor at RightAlerts.com. She serves as a columnist for Townhall, TownHallFinance.com, and The Christian Post. Her interviews as a commentator have been featured on Drudge Report, Breitbart News, Sports Illustrated, TheBlaze, WorldNetDaily, and The Daily Caller.

Controversies
In an interview with CNN's Don Lemon, Hughes got into a heated discussion with commentator Ana Navarro over the 2005 tape of Donald Trump making comments about assaulting women.[8] She was also impersonated by Cecily Strong on the April 2, 2016 episode of Saturday Night Live.
In a live interview broadcast on CNN the day before the 2016 presidential election, she made an embarrassing gaffe[9] by confusing the word "Molotov" with the Jewish expression of congratulations or good luck when she stated that a video by rap music artist and Hillary Clinton supporter Jay-Z begins "with a crowd throwing mazel tov cocktails."[10]

Personal life
Hughes is married to Chris Hughes, a custom home builder, and has two children.[citation needed]
Hughes's brother Cliff was shot and killed before she was born. He was shot to death at the age of eight, by his nanny's 12-year-old son while the nanny watched him at her home. She is pro-gun and an NRA supporter. By writing about the tragedy, Hughes received her first network appearance on CNN's Piers Morgan Live, where she defended the right to keep and bear arms despite her own family's past.[20]

Hughes graduated magna cum laude with a broadcast communications/political science degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin.[6]
