Your right bicep

Look at this, I actually have a picture of your right bicep! I wanted to put this on the article talk page, but I figured there was probably some kind of rule against humor there. --MelanieN (talk) 19:50, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

OMG. Yes! It's a close replica. And yes, I'm sure there is a rule. But, considering the tense-ness that creeps into political articles I think humor is a good thing to ease the discourse. It turns frowns into smiles...foes into friends...at least for a moment. Buster Seven Talk 20:03, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
My belief exactly. But I find that whenever I attempt humor on a general Wikipedia page, I generally get scolded for it. And for some reason, posting pictures on article talk pages is particularly hand-slap worthy. Best to keep it among friends. --MelanieN (talk) 21:27, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
OMT (one more thing....) Except for my own blathering's at the campaign article there has been zero article or talk page input in the past few days. Its not like things have not happened. The Law and Order speech, him saying he's gonna be who he is, the Manafort problem, the polls, etc. Is everyone on vacation ...resting up for the home stretch? Buster Seven Talk 21:50, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm working on some stuff. (I want to create "people and groups" articles for Paul Ryan and Ted Cruz.) And there's been a lot of action at the Donald Trump article, even if the campaign article has slowed down. I do think we will need to say something about Manafort but I don't think that story is ripe yet. --MelanieN (talk) 23:01, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
RE: No humor allowed: Apparently chit chat isn't allowed either. Teacher just came along and hatted the "I am who I am" discussion. --MelanieN (talk) 23:40, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yea. I just saw that. That's why I used to hang out in the back of class. It was harder for the teacher to hit you with the chalk when thrown from the front of the room. I did thank Nuclear for the "interesting" comment. At least it was friendly. I guess time is better spent having long-winded discussions about 1RR v 3RR and edit warring, etc. Buster Seven Talk 05:38, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hours later and still no mention of staff changes. I heard a funny comment..."It looks like the campaign is in hospice care and he wants to surround himself with friends and family." Buster Seven Talk 20:13, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@MelanieN: Still very quiet at the Campaign article. just today added a thread about the Comm-in-Chief forum and Black community and Pam Bondi. Tried to be as neutral as possible. I really think the article could be separated in two...primary and general. Not that I care how long it gets but length becomes an excuse to leave out important, almost daily, happenings. I'm working @ User:Buster7/Commander-in-Chief Forum. It was a first time event and deserves an article. Buster Seven Talk 20:48, 10 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Good for you. I'd suggest putting the year or some other identifier in the title - "2016 Commander in Chief Forum" or "Commander in Chief Forum 2016" - because otherwise it sounds like some kind of permanent organization instead of an election-year event. --MelanieN (talk) 18:52, 11 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

On this day, 9 years ago...

Hey, Buster7. I'd like to wish you a wonderful First Edit Day on behalf of the Wikipedia Birthday Committee!
Have a great day!
Lepricavark (talk) 14:35, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Rica. I hope you don't mind my nickname for you. "Lep" just doesnt have the right ring to it. Buster Seven Talk 18:19, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Don't mind at all. Lepricavark (talk) 19:26, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

Thanks for the nomination, and thanks for offering to have me sign off (here). I apologize for the delay; I'm glad the nomination got processed. They appear to be in the queue to be awarded, right? And, how are things in general? Best, JustBerry (talk) 13:05, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cubs

Your input would be a big help

Hello Buster7. I was so pleased to see Softlavender named Editor of the Week. I thought she should have one of those nice virtual plaques that are placed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Hall of Fame. My skills at creating things like this are rudimentary at best. Even that may be too generous of a word :-) Nevertheless, I have has a go at making one here. When you have a moment would you please take a look at it. Any suggestions for improvements would be most appreciated. I'm not entirely happy with the caption for the picture for instance. Also when it is finished I do not know what the process is for adding it to the HoF. Thanks for your time. MarnetteD|Talk 20:57, 4 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

EoTW thoughts

When you're linking to the nomination page (at least based on the ones I've dealt with) it's best to link to the Special:PermaLink/ where the nomination was made. Otherwise you're just linking to the generic Nom page without the specific user mentioned. Primefac (talk) 21:33, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My initial idea was to give an editor that was viewing the plaque somewhere to go (the generic nom page) to make a nomination of an editor in their "neighborhood". But I can go with the permalink...no prob. I'm just always trying to advertise The Nom page. Buster Seven Talk 21:40, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, interesting point. Looks like about half are linked to the main page, half are linked to the specific edit. If the intention is just to link to the nomination page in general, then it doesn't really need to be a parameter... might be worth discussing at the project talk. Primefac (talk) 21:44, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, if you can think of an easier way to set the EoTW stuff up, let me know. I'm not really active in the project, but since I did so much work for JB I figure I'll at least stick around for the tech stuff. Primefac (talk) 18:36, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The changes you have made are much easier for me to manipulate than before. I am far, far from a tech guy. I basically watch what someone like you does and do my best to duplicate it. I am extremely glad that the holes are being filled in at the Hall of Fame. Going forward I'm a little worried that I will be able to create new pages for future EotW's. Time will tell. Thanks for your time and effort. Buster Seven Talk 19:22, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Happy 4th!

Hey Buster, long time no see! Been really, really busy these last couple of years. I hope you're doing good and enjoying the summer. I just wanted to stop by and wish you and the family a Happy Fourth of July! Zaereth (talk) 01:33, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Collapsing discussion

Regarding this edit: to be honest, I rather wish more (in my view) off-topic discussions would have been collapsed to avoid the distraction. But unfortunately all too often when it did happen, those who really wanted to keep talking about the subject would remove the collapsing.

I do think in this case there's no point in continuing down that path. I had written up a little response before the collapsing happened, and decided to forgo posting it in the interest of moving on. I think having a mass mailing receiver list is a good idea, as well as cleaning it up. I'm not optimistic about the success of some of the other proposals, because I think it puts the cart before the horse: we need interested participants before we can have a working group. But... I may well be wrong. Maybe a working group announced in the right places will garner just the right amount interest: enough to form a group, not so much that everyone and their dog joins up, making it impossible to agree upon anything. So if someone is willing to take on the job of beating the bushes looking for help, more power to them. isaacl (talk) 04:43, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't an off-topic discussion...the elephant in the room was... that its an unfriendly take-over. The intent is fine but...maybe its time for new blood. I wish him well. My fingerprints are all over the place so I certainly don't want WER to fail...―Buster7  05:15, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I agree this particular discussion was not off-topic, and I don't think there was a real need to collapse the discussion. But it was a face saving way to restart the conversation, and who among us hasn't wanted to have a do-over? Regarding take-over: yeah, I don't understand what the motivation was for choosing that approach (seems to me the easiest thing to do was to post a friendly greeting message first: "Hi, anyone here?"). But the bell can't be unrung, so let's hope something new and better can occur. isaacl (talk) 05:25, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week

Thank you so much for nominating me. I did not realise all those weeks ago how prestigious an award it is and I am very pleased and proud to receive it. Thank you for your kindness in thinking of me. Jack1956 (talk) 20:52, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a token of appreciation for what appears to all as being a very fruitful road trip through the state of Missouri, where they showed you much and you photographed it all, as witnessed by all at List of United States post office murals. For this, and for all the other fine work that you have accomplished in the fields of the fine art your comrades at wikipedia offer this award as recognition for everything! It is rather addictive, isn't it? Carptrash (talk) 17:37, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I will mull over

who a good editor or two might be to nominate. I have been involved in some carp, carp carping at various places recently - so many of the editors I have run into seem to be on the other side of the fence from me on and those on the same side I don't know that well. I have taken List of Confederate monuments and memorials off my watch list. Okay, you might want to look at User: Deisenbe, who is dong some good monument stuff recently. Actually beating me to a few Monument and memorial controversies in the United States statues that I have been working on. Which is always "damn!" but also "well done." Carptrash (talk) 17:26, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks good friend. I will check him out. If he passes my rigorous vetting, (lol), can we co-nominate him? ―Buster7  17:29, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Co would be fine. You vet then let me know if there is more for me to do. Feel free to use my name, in vain or otherwise. Carptrash (talk) 17:36, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"the art of article creation"

Hi Buster7, I saw your comment on Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest. It seems you have more experience than I on Wikipedia, but if you do need help creating articles, feel free to reach out. I've started a number of them, and would be happy to do what I can to share that experience with others. = paul2520 (talk) 12:02, 25 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

EOW

Hey Buster7. How are you? Please let me know if I'm overkilling the Editor of the Week with my recent nominations. I saw your comment where you mentioned that you were running out of editors to nominate, so I figured I could add a few more I've interacted with in the past. I have a few more off the top of my head (and I'll keep an eye on others as I go along), but I'll hold off from adding more for now until we need more in the pipeline. Feel free to give me feedback/suggestions regarding this project. I'm happy to help! MX () 01:59, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

MX I truly can not find the words to express how happy your nominations have made me. The Editor of the Week program has been my gift to the wonderful editors of Wikipedia for many years now. Just recently it almost faded from view. Luckily I realized its worth and decided to keep it going. Great Joy since your nominations will keep the Queue filled until the new year. Welcome Aboard! ―Buster7  07:59, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Great! Happy to help. Let me know if you ever need anything. I'm following the Nominations and Accepted Nominations pages. I'll be keeping an eye from now on. I bump into editors when doing writing about Mexico, but I do come across many in other topics at DYK/GA. Thanks again! MX () 12:01, 16 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week nomination

Thank you for awarding me Editor of the Week. I had absolutely no idea I had even been nominated and I am grateful that people do appreciate what I do on Wikipedia. Though I am surprised that Presidential M&M's was mentioned as (and I don't like to brag about this) I did once hold the records of having written both most viewed lead and non-lead hooks at WP:DYKSTATS with Silver Cross Tavern and United States v. Seven years now! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:30, 17 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the words of praise: you can quote from what I said on his user talk. I think I stayed polite even in the most recent exchange. He was the forth or so person talking to me on Wikipedia which I will never forget, but - see Georg Katzer - I'm not in the mood right now. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:15, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I read the praise in the suggestion, and can't help thinking that "always of utmost kindness" and "always an edit summary" makes me think of this edit summary. I began a thread on his talk saying how miserable that made me feel, and I think we resolved some, but "always", - no. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:39, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Good to see you again! But... :( --JustBerry (talk) 15:14, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The cupboard is bare and I haven't the time to shake the trees for a candidate before I leave for vacation on Tuesday. If you have a likely candidate please nominate and I will award them next Sunday. The edit you reference above was just one of the many things in prep for the trip in case I forgot. ―Buster7  15:38, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
What happened to Gerda Arendt (Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Nominations)? --JustBerry (talk) 15:47, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda has been nominated numerous times over the years. She has made it quite clear...each time...that she prefers NOT to receive the Award.―Buster7  15:54, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(watching:) I don't want to cause you trouble, just thought that the award should go to the unnoticed contributor which I don't think I fit ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:15, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Gerda Arendt: Oh, don't be sorry! It's quite clear that your contributions mean a lot to the community. Speaking of an unnoticed contributor, though, who might some of these unnoticed editors be? I'd be happy to write the nomination. --JustBerry (talk) 16:18, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I look every day, and find them, and others found them before me, from 2007. Better would be those we didn't find ;) - I go by my watchlist, - when I see someone making a good edit to an article I watch, or supporting another use who needs it, I check them out. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:24, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Buster7: @Gerda Arendt: Aha! --JustBerry (talk) 16:58, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Buster7: If you are busy with travels, I can do some of the prep work over this coming weekend. --JustBerry (talk) 16:58, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great Nomination. Thanks JB. As you can see I moved it to the accepted page 'cause we no longer require a 2 week delay for seconding. If you like you could remove the "Current Nomination" page along with it's talk page. We really only need one place for editors to nominate. Now that one nomination is in the Queue I can award it next week Sat/Sun no problem. The biggest help, as to prep work, is finding candidates and nominating them. Have a great holiday!―Buster7  17:55, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Buster7: Why not just keep the "Current Nomination" page in the event that the project gets multiple nominations at a time? This way, editors can still continue to comment on nominations if they'd like. --JustBerry (talk) 18:07, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@JustBerry:...sounds good..."multiple nominations at a time"...that would be a dream come true. What has worked in the past is one of those 'mass distribution requests' to members. @Isaacl: did one a few years ago with great success. ―Buster7  18:16, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Buster7: That's what I was thinking earlier as well. @Isaacl: If you happen to remember, any templates, etc. you may have used in that mass nomination request to members would be helpful. Thanks, 18:19, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, you did it :) Let me see if I can find the mailing list you created and used... isaacl (talk) 20:39, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Isaacl: Huh. Did you, I, or anyone else actually send out the message? Also, do you watch this page? I never know whether or not to ping you here. --JustBerry (talk) 20:43, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Here is the request. Buster7's mailing list can be reused (and expanded as desired  Done), and the message reused. I do watch this page, but of course it's hard to know that. Since you pinged once, generally speaking, more pings for followup conversation are not required. Also, though I don't usually mention it, while I'm discussing meta matters, my indent level for my reply was deliberate, as I was following up on Buster's comment and so the "you" refers to Buster7. With the change in indent level, it looks like the "you" refers to you.) isaacl (talk) 20:51, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
For now, I think a more organic, personal way of inviting users may be more effective. There's enough mass messaging sending on wiki, no? --JustBerry (talk) 21:34, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, feel free to use whatever organic method you like to identify potential nominators. isaacl (talk) 21:44, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Nominations page (accessed from the "Current nominations" tab), Buster7 has a good point in that we probably don't need both the Nominations page and the Accepted nominations page. (There were reasons for having the two, but in practice they haven't proven to be significant.) We could drop the Accepted nominations page from the process and just work from the queue on the Nominations page. isaacl (talk) 21:44, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Buster7: @Isaacl: (Sorry, not sure if this page is on your watchlist!) Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Hall of Fame/2018-06-03 drafted! As always, feedback is welcome. --JustBerry (talk) 18:46, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DRAFT for Editor of the Week : nominations needed message!

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication to improving the encyclopedia. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behavior and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is in constant need of new candidates and so new nominations are always needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations or vandal notification?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background, out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

Retention: up to speed!

I figured you may be busy with your trip, so I got the project up to speed until Saturday. I can take care of the Sunday stuff as well. Safe travels, JustBerry (talk) 06:02, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol?

Hi Buster7,

I've recently been looking for editors to invite to join New Page Patrol, and after reviewing your editing history, I think you would be a good candidate. Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; we could use some additional help from an experienced user like yourself.

Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision. If you choose to apply, you can drop an application over at WP:PERM/NPR.

Cheers, and hope to see you around, — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 12:27, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A kitten for you!

How have you been, Buster7? It's been quite a while since we worked together on something! Thanks for all your dedication to editor retention/EotW – it has made such an impact on hundreds of editors, and I'm sure many have contributed more vigorously because of it. All the best,

Editor of the week nomination move

Hello Buster,

I have submitted an editor of the week nomination for Northamerica1000 and it has four support votes. When will it be moved in to the queue? Just curious as it seems to be a positive support for the nomination. Take your time, no rush. Thank you AmericanAir88 (talk) 14:57, 21 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

AmericanAir88, Buster has been offline for a couple days. There are several people already in the queue, so there is no hurry. Remember everyone here is a volunteer. Thanks. John from Idegon (talk) 16:29, 21 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, John from Idegon, for feeding the cat and taking in the mail while I was in Ohio meeting my newest grandson (#14). AmericanAir88. Thanks for nominating NA1000. A fine choice. He has been a member of WER since Sept 2012. I'll be putting him in the Queue later today. He will be awarded in about 14 weeks. ―Buster7  18:57, 21 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Buster7: Thanks for the quick reply. Congratulations on meeting your grandson, My wife and I have just introduced a new baby ourself. Thank you again. AmericanAir88 (talk) 04:15, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Buster, thanks for all you do

I just got back from dropping a note on Steven's (this weeks EDDY awardee) talk. You know, doing that and seeing him get our good ol EDDY made me smile more than anything I've done on the 'pedia in a looooong time. In case you didn't know it, the work you do is appreciated. Very much. A hearty Thank YOU, old friend, along with a couple choruses of "Take me out to the Cubs Game". John from Idegon (talk) 20:51, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A hearty Thank You in return for making me smile, John. I'm having a bit of a glitch @ Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Hall of Fame/2018-09-09 with the User page. As you know, Steven does not have a User page. I tried to put "User talk:Steven (Editor)" in the recipient line but that is not working. I want to be able to lead someone that will view the banner to Steven's page for congrats or whatever. Any ideas? ―Buster7  21:13, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
{{u|Steven (Editor)}}? John from Idegon (talk) 21:41, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
When creating the banner, the first line of the template states: ""<!-- user_name, without User: prefix -->"". When I try (u|Steven (Editor) as you suggest just u shows up in the banner. Not a big deal. Let's not worry about it. ―Buster7  22:27, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Don't ask me about template syntax. I'd do better at conjugating Polish verbs. John from Idegon (talk) 22:30, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Buster7  22:34, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The template adds the "User talk: prefix to the link, so the recipient parameter just needs to be set to the user name. I've updated the infobox. isaacl (talk) 02:51, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I actually knew that. I was just testing to see who would come up with the right answer..... NOT! It's a comfort to know that there is always the watchful and knowledgeable eye of Editor Isaacl. ―Buster7  05:04, 10 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Barnstar of Diligence
It is highly commendable and utterly noteworthy that you have been disseminating the Editor of the Week award with utmost diligence and commitment to the finest editors on Wikipedia. This is really an altruistic task that you have been doing from such a long time. Due to this, you deserve much more than a barnstar and your efforts are really admired and praised! I think there are so many editors who would profit more than I would from an occasional award, - I really have enough, look at my talk and that's just 2019 ;) - and which week would you take? - Do a GA review for me, anybody, that's what would brighten my day ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:08, 23 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank You so much! It has been a pleasure and a reward to bring joy to this workplace. I'll say more later. My wife wants me to watch Marie Kondo with her. ―Buster7  19:49, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Whenever I get a little down in the dumps I spend a few moments @ the recipient response page and it lifts my spirits reading the good, solid, positive effect the award had for so many. In the early days of WER, the great Dennis Brown reminded us that Editor Retention happens one editor at a time. That page assures me that it works...at least for a moment. My biggest challenge is finding, as you say, "the finest editors on Wikipedia". I feel relieved when fellow editors nominate someone in their circle of collaborators for a pat on the back and a "job well done". I also feel relieved when I see a past EDDY Editor somewhere on some talk page or at WP/ANI (as an admin) or listed at Recent Changes, still working hard, still doing good for the encyclopedia, still participating in creating and maintaining "free access to the sum total of human knowledge". ―Buster7  01:31, 22 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You!

Hey, thank you very much for considering me worthy enough of the award! I am really grateful and you are really amazing! Your nominate message was really wonderful! I would continue to do my best to contribute to Wikipedia. Adityavagarwal (talk) 09:07, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstars and editor retention

The first item at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2019-03-31/Recent research may be of interest. The "two important conditions" are interesting to think about in the context of the Editor of the Week recognition. I don't think it's faced the problem of having obviously undeserving candidates nominated, but it may be something that we should do some simple checks to guard against. I think the "no big deal" philosophy that guided us when creating the recognition has addressed the same issues as the stated second condition does. isaacl (talk) 16:34, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Our "screening process" works and has an excellent history of weeding out bad faith contributors. Since we depend on nominations, we don't cast a wide net like the German barnstar and so we don't harvest "undeserving characters". I can only remember some pre-awarding flak about "Erik" but, as I recall, he was truly honored and shared a heart-felt personal response afterward. Our basic preselection process amounts to some cursory vetting by you or I with occasional input from varied editors that "watchlist" the Nomination page. True - prior, when we used to wait for seconds, - it provided a broader support but we never really needed seconds to validate our decision to award. I am not against whatever simple checks you have in mind. The second condition (subjects who by chance do not receive the award should be an unidentifiable group who ideally are ignorant of the award’s existence) seems outside our control. Many recent recipients have commented, "I didn't even know this award existed but I'm honored to receive it." I guess the German barnstar researchers were worried about the "Why didn't I get one" faction.
I'm not a researcher nor do I know how to start a research project. But I do know that we have 7 years of awarding history and 7 years of data with the potential to evaluate, at least with a glimmer of fact, as to whether or not the EotW works to retain editors. Did the editor keep editing? Can a researcher go back to the early days and evaluate the short-term and long-term editing of an awarded editor? The following seems to imply that there is a connection between awards (barnstar or Eddy) and retaining working editors. TRA! ―Buster7  20:04, 31 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

from Editing Research:Newsletter/2012/April (section) @ WikiMedia

To gain insight in what makes Wikipedia tick, two researchers from the Sociology Department at Stony Brook University conducted an experiment with barnstars. They were surprised by what they found.

  • Professor Arnout van de Rijt and graduate student Michael Restivo wanted to test the hypothesis according to which receiving recognition for one's work in an informal peer-based environment such as Wikipedia has a positive effect on productivity. To test their hypothesis, they determined the top 1% most productive English Wikipedia users among the currently active editors who had yet to receive their first barnstar. From that group they took a random sample of 200 users. Then they randomly split the sample into an experimental group and a control group, each consisting of 100 users. They awarded a barnstar to each user in the experimental group; the users in the control group were not given a barnstar. The researchers found their hypothesis confirmed: the productivity of the users in the experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group. What really took the researchers by surprise was how long-lasting the effect was. They followed the two groups for 90 days, observing that the increase in contribution level for the group of barnstar recipients persisted, almost unabated, for the full observation period.

EotW nominations

Hi Buster7, and thanks again for your nomination of me; still bringing a smile to my face. I keep coming across editors who I think would make worthy recipients of EotW; however, I am aware that I have put in several nominations recently, two of mine are currently in the queue. I don't want to be seen as spamming the nominations page, but I am unsure to what extent you would welcome more (hopefully) sensible nominations. I wonder if you could give me a steer on this? Thanks. Gog the Mild (talk) 11:58, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gog the Mild. Your nominations are always finely crafted, informative and are more than welcome. The more the merrier. However, currently the awarding of the Eddy is at a downtime in deference to the ongoing kerfuffle at WP:FRAMBAN. I respect the workers of Wikipedia too much and cannot, in good conscience, implement the Award at this time. I'll let you know when we can start up again. ―Buster7  22:54, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your concerns completely. I've removed myself from the coordinators list at WPSCH. I had an issue with a female editor over the past few days, and no one would step up and block her. Hmmm...wonder why? Now I'm waiting for an email from SF. This is what Wikipedia has become. John from Idegon (talk) 23:47, 6 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Current status of WP:FRAMBAN in a nutshell

A beautiful comment at WP:FRAMBAN

To set the record straight, the Buzzfeed article contains a glaring error when referring to my "sarcastic references to a forthcoming Nobel Peace Prize". The certain fact that Wikipedians will eventually be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize is the furthest thing from sarcasm. This grand experiment, born jumping off the deep end, has surprisingly tapped into an unprecedented marriage of societal wisdom, advancing technology, and an almost unfathomable basic trust in the potential of collective unselfishness in the human race. Wikipedia's creation was soon joined by millions of inquisitive sharing minds, and is constantly being recreated, polished, and improved by a literal second-by-second outpouring of intellectual strength. Wikipedia, now a recognizable treasure of civilization, changes the world for the better at an accelerating rate. In 2024, give or take a year or three, when the members of the Nobel Peace Prize committee fully analyze the effect our project has had, and will continue to have, on every person, household, and the historical advancement of knowledge and ethics it provides to every corner of the Earth, the recognition of Wikipedia and Wikipedians will be an obvious and easy choice. Encouraging collaborative behaviour

What's nice to see is after years of trying to get others to consider how to encourage desired behaviours (and discourage undesirable ones), there seems to be some more interest. (Editor of the Week, of course, was an example of a few people agreeing on this and doing something about it.) Whether or not that'll translate into action remains to be seen, but at least it's one tiny step in the right direction. isaacl (talk) 16:33, 8 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

...and most of the conversation is back on trying to define incivility and harassment (a few still talk about looking beyond definitions). My guess is that many people think that the existing process is largely sufficient to deal with these issues and it's just the definitions that need adjustment and alignment across the community. And while enforcement is important, I think it's at least as important to try to prevent poor behaviour from ever happening in the first place. It's process 101: if you don't want people to do something, design the process so doing that will not help, and even be actively harmful. isaacl (talk) 17:18, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm. The Kohler approach to dog training. If it helps, the problem I find with this method is that is presupposes that animals won't actively seek out non-helpful or even harmful things. Personally, I prefer the Stephanitz method. Lead by example and others will follow. At some point the societal norms reach a point of population inversion and certain behaviors become socially unacceptable within a community. I'm not sure what this is all about, but I hope that helps. Zaereth (talk) 18:14, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
What this is about can be found @ Wikipedia:Community response to the Wikimedia Foundation's ban of Fram#HARASSMENT. I have no doubt that your input and insight would be welcome. ―Buster7  05:59, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Re-sign or resign?

Reading the edit summary for your recent edit gave me pause for a moment, until I realized you meant "re-sign". Most of the time it doesn't matter when the hyphen is omitted, but sometimes it would really help to leave it there :-D isaacl (talk) 01:05, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up. My RL wife was calling from the front room and I got 'betwixt and between'. I'm still not sure I got the ping to work. O well! I hope your inputs into the Harassment discussion get wings. I know it's been a long term goal of yours to improve editorial relations. ―Buster7  05:44, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jarvis Square Flea Market

Maybe a dozen years ago my wife and I ran a semi-successful resale shop in the Rogers park neighborhood of Chicago. I say semi-successful because while we always paid the rent, we never made any real money. When we started our little venture into "being our own bosses" the rent was a reasonable $300 a month. 7 years and two landlord changes later and the rent had more than doubled to $900. Luckily we had other "real" jobs that paid for our extravagant lifestyle :~). The store was located on a busy corner just east of the Jarvis L and had a nice big patio out front. I made it my practice to daily set up rooms and displays outside for customers and passers-by to peruse our goods. One day a kitchen, the next a dining room, followed by a bedroom. The stuff was all piled into the aisles of the store each night only to be moved back outside the next day. We opened late in the day and stayed open into the evening. Hard work, sure, but we had a great time. We had an article written about the store in The Reader, which talked about my transition from t-shirt worker to collared shirt w/ a pocket worker. Regulars would stop by on their way home, friends would stop in to visit, and we would sit outside among the merchandise to act as magnets for shoppers. We renamed the street to Jarvis Square just to add a bit of English class to the place. Early on, I painted our Marquee with the address "1447 Jarvis Square". After our opening success we started to conduct 2 day (I think it was a Sat/Sun event but I have to ask Cathy) Flea Markets and advertised "in beautiful DownTown Jarvis Square" on the patio and the city berms up and down Jarvis and Greenview. I think we had about six events over the life of the store. We usually had 25 or so independent vendors. They, like us, would set up early and stay late. The Flea Markets were a BIG hit. People came throughout the day, meeting neighbors and old friends they hadn't seen in a while. With the EL close by riders could see the event and drop in to shop. It was a big party and I wore a top hat so I could be found easily. We collected a small nominal fee for advertising and minimal expenses. No permits or permission... and no problems that I can recall. I think we would do it again in a heart beat if any ever asked us to. But no one ever has which I find very surprising.

Before we opened, the building was abit of an eyesore. The space we rented had been vacant for many years with only occasional use by the local alderman as a campaign office. The other storefronts were either empty or were office type businesses with no street presence.Don Selle's Coffee Shoppe was a local institution and hangout and did good business. I have to think long and hard about who was in the other dozen or so spots. By the time we left, the new owners had renovated rather than tear down and we had been an important fixture in the renovation and reawakening of the whole little business district. Others played their part and spent gobs of money, but without our impetus, their vision would never have been realized. Jarvis Liquors going out of business also had a big affect on the changes.
