:Any chart in particular? Is it an image of a chart or a graph that is coded into an article? If you'd stated which chart it was someone could edit it and update the data, hence no need to delete it. - [[User:X201|X201]] ([[User talk:X201|talk]]) 15:51, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

I’m pretty sure that the Queen of England was clear. No title associated with Megan Markle. Wikipedia needs to remove the title they have in regards. Thank you!

There's this one guy who told me that they reverted an edit I made in the article about the Aja people, even though I didn't do or edit anything. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24pateoh (talkcontribs) 02:18, 25 February 2020 (UTC) :[reply]

Are terrible. Some of us are using Wikipedia in environments where we *can't* sign in due to opsec reasons and forcing the language to the locale without letting us just use a cookie to change it is ill-advised at best. I realize this seems to be a side effect of the new MediaWiki software rolling out today but the vast majority of people read Wikipedia not-logged-in and I would hope this isn't a ploy to force people to log in for tracking purposes. Please reconsider this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.189.164.104 (talk) 03:18, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The people who frequent this Help desk are people who can advise about editing Wikipedia. Few or none of them have anything to do with the provision or maintenance of the software. A better place to discuss this would be at WP:VPT. --ColinFine (talk) 15:06, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is probably the same issue as #Interface language below, which is resolved now. Peter Coombe (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 15:10, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Interface language

Who thought it was a good idea to restrict the user interface language to the language attributed to the local IP address even when you are visiting Wikipedia in another language? This is totally useless and confusing since you have to look twice which language version you are looking at. There is a high chance that people who visit Wikipedia in a different language are able to at least navigate through if not read that language. Besides, the language settings are clearly broken. It says the interface language is just like the content language, which it is clearly not. I am based in Germany and I want to see everything in English when I'm on the English Wikipedia. I can imagine how monolingual expatriates would think about this. This is as bad as the horrendous collapsing of the language table into continent clusters done years ago. These changes are making things more difficult for people who speak multiple languages. --2001:16B8:3133:4800:2C9A:F755:44BF:D0B3 (talk) 09:39, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You know, you used to beat us and put soap into our mouth for not speaking English because this is America and we were dirty Injuns. Now you found a new way of showing us whose country this is. Navajo and Cherokee wikipedia are in English only. Very clever. 174.22.206.104 (talk) 10:49, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

These are English only? [1][2] Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:30, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think 174 is complaining that Navajo and Cherokee Wikipedias have their navigation links in English. But that is not a matter for English Wikipedia or its Help Desk. We here have no control over how other language Wikipedias are managed.
I find 2001's criticism harder to understand. In my experience, what I see in Wikipedia is not affected by my location. Maproom (talk) 11:42, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Given multiple edits on the issue, there's clearly been some location-based changes for IP editors. Nosebagbear (talk) 11:58, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am seeing their navigation links in Finnish. This must be because my local desktop session is somehow using Finnish as a default language. The Navajo and Cherokee Wikipedias have nothing to do with the Finnish language. JIP | Talk 12:40, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Now they have changed to what I assume are the Navajo and Cherokee languages. JIP | Talk 12:43, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is a bug, but it's sad how many people are using a browser in English when it's not their first language. The state of internationalization and localization in 2020 should be better than this. Nemo 14:13, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Help with Vandalism

If any administrator is nearby, I need your help, this guy is vandalising the main Russia page and is spreading lies to the community. Can you send him a proper warning that if he does this again, can you block him? He consistently disputes with me about this until it turned from an argument to vandalism. I need admin help immediately, please respond.

He vandalizes two pages, the Russia main page and the Demographics of Russia page. Please warn him about this issue and have him cease these actions and stop spreading lies immediately, thank you. (e.g. vandalised past 4th warning). IntercontinentalEmpire (talk) 14:24, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I fail to see how this is vandalism. It's just a content dispute about a difference in population. Nothing to block anyone about. JIP | Talk 14:30, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, IntercontinentalEmpire, but frankly you'd be better off dealing with the litany of comments on you talk page regarding conflict of interest, POV-pushing, edit-warring and disruptive editing, to name but a few. I'm afraid, unless you can provide reliable sources to justify your hiking of the Russian population figures, the issues on your talk are going to be the context in which your attempted changes are going to be seen in. ——SN54129 14:33, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it is IntercontinentalEmpire (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), who engages in vandalism of the page (putting 2017 population numbers as 2020, even without bothering to alter citation template), just because he objects the fact that Russian population declined last year (for whatever reasons). One might consult my comment of 08:22, 10 February 2020 (UTC)] at Russia TP - as an example of what IntercontinentalEmpire does. Bests, --Seryo93 (talk) 15:15, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Transcluded page

Hello, Can you please help me understand what it means that I page I created for Lynden Miller is marked as transcluded and why? Do pages get un-transcluded? Many thanks for your help. Minard38 (talk) 16:45, 25 February 2020 (UTC)Minard38[reply]

I'm guessing you're referring to what is displayed on Special:WhatLinksHere/Lynden_Miller? All pages are shown as transcluding themselves on that page. Transclusion is when a page includes some other page, I guess the database just marks all pages as including themselves. – Thjarkur (talk) 16:59, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your prompt and helpful observation. Minard38 (talk) 17:03, 25 February 2020 (UTC)Minard38[reply]

It is not Lynden Miller transcluding Lynden Miller per se, rather, it is Module:Citation/CS1 that makes it appear that Lynden Miller transcludes Lynden Miller. cs1|2 templates are rendered by Module:citation/CS1. That module reads the content of the wikipedia article where the cs1|2 templates are used to discover if the article contains one of the {{use xxx dates}} templates. To do this Module:Citation/CS1 gets a title object for the article and then calls the object's function getContent() (mw:Extension:Scribunto/Lua reference manual#Title objects). When it does that, the article is recorded as a transclusion of itself.

    Yeah, I know, tmi.

    Trappist the monk (talk) 18:08, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Trappist the monk: Not TMI, and welcome! I noticed the "self-transclusion" a while back and never got around to figuring out whether it was a bug or a feature. One more thing off my bucket list. But it would be marginally good (though not worth wasting anyone's time) if "it" were to somehow exclude this particular case somehow. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 21:40, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
But it would be marginally good ... if "it" were to somehow exclude this particular case somehow. Sorry, don't understand. What is it that you want excluded?
    Trappist the monk (talk) 22:55, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Showing an article in its own list of transclusions. Totally NBD. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 07:05, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    To whom it may concern,

I am the Creative and UX Designer for Aura Identity Guard and I would like to update the logo on the "Identity Guard" page. I read that I might have to upload it on the commons page put I do not want to relinquish rights to our company logo. Is there a way to change the old existing logo and update it to the new one?

    Thank you,

Jon — Preceding unsigned comment added by AuraIDG (talkcontribs) 17:07, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

AuraIDG, yes, logos under fair use are images that can be used without a free license here. I would recommend making a request at Wikipedia:Files for upload, where users experienced in fair use images and their templates can upload and tag it for you. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 17:30, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hello, Jon. I'm afraid there are some rather important administrative points to deal with before answering your question.
First, if you are employed by AuraIDG, you must declare your status as a paid editor before you do anything in regard to that article.
Secondly, user names which suggest that they are editing on behalf of an organisation are not permitted: you should change your username (or, as easily, abandon that one, and create a new one). The account should be personal to you, not shared with anybody else. You can use yor real name, as I do, or a pseudonym; and a name like "Jon from Aura IDG" would be acceptable.
Now, to get to your question: normally, images must be free for reuse and uploaded to Commons; but there are some exceptions, and logos are a major exception. However, because of your COI, it would be best if you placed an edit request on the talk page Talk:Identity Guard, asking for somebody to upload and use the new logo (include a URL for it). --ColinFine (talk) 17:35, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Creating wikipedia page

I would like to create Wikipedia page for my husband Peter Cohen a 18 year veteran at Amazon, investor of Mechanical Turk, AWS etc. we lost him to ALS last year at 53. He holds 20 cloud foundational patents. Etc.

Can I get a service to help me create his profile. Some of the services want me to pay them $7k to put this together.

We have create Peter Cohen Foundation a non profit 501(c)3 organization to help bring Technology innovations to Cure ALS.

Your help in this matter would really help me and us to create awareness on ALS as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1702:1D00:C84F:2CD9:E43B:BBBC:A08E (talk) 18:51, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry for your loss. Wikipedia does not itself offer paid editing or article writing services. Many businesses or individuals claim to offer this service, but don't hand over any money until you see the end result. Despite what they claim, they can make no guarantees(such as writing an article that will not be deleted). They also must declare that you are paying them per the paid editing policy. In order to merit an article on Wikipedia, there must be many independent reliable sources that have significant coverage of your husband showing how he meets the Wikipedia definition of a notable person. I do not say this to minimize your husband's accomplishments or role in people's lives, which must be substantial. But Wikipedia is not a place to merely memorialize someone who has passed. There are forums in which that can be done.
Wanting to "create awareness" of ALS is a laudable goal, but Wikipedia is not the proper platform to do that. Social media platforms would be a better fit for that goal. 331dot (talk) 18:59, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help in creating company profile for Wikipedia

    Hello everyone!

It`s my first time creating a Wikipedia page. I tried creating one for a company, but Wikipedia deleted it, alleging that it was advertising. How can I contact contributor to help me, or view some guidelines so it doesn`t happen again? I also wanted to know, if contributors provide the service to create the page for me, and if so, how can I contact them?

Thanks in advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 179.27.81.138 (talk) 20:10, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There are no edits from your IP other than the above, so I can't look at your draft to tell you what the issue was. You can contact the administrator that deleted it- if you have an account and user talk page, there is likely a notice there, or you can look at the deletion log to see who deleted it. (again, if you would tell the name of the draft, I could tell you who deleted it myself)
Note that out of six million plus pages, there is not a single "profile" on Wikipedia. Wikipedia has articles. This is a subtle but important distinction. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that has articles about subjects shown with significant coverage in independent reliable sources to meet Wikipedia's special definition of notability; in this case, the definition of a notable company.
If you work for this company, you must review and comply with the conflict of interest and paid editing policies. The latter is a Terms of Use requirement and mandatory if you work for the company. 331dot (talk) 20:16, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    WikiBirthday

I am curious about this. Today (date of February 25 in the USA) is my WikiBirthday. On one of my "user pages" (here: User:Joseph A. Spadaro/Sandbox/Page-Intro-10), I have the User Box for Wikipedia birth dates. The User Box is here: [3]. Therefore, is there any reason that I am not listed on this page here ([4]) of WikiBirthdays? Any ideas? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 20:11, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Right after I typed the above question, my name now does appear at this page: [5]. So, what's going on and what just happened? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 20:20, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Joseph A. Spadaro: The software needed a kick to get the template's logic through to the category page; for performance reasons, the software doesn't recalculate the effect of every template every time someone looks at a page. I made a null edit to your sandbox page and then a purge of the category page, and it is now showing up. But it is likely to remain there tomorrow unless someone goes through those steps again. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:24, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@John of Reading: OK. Great. Thanks. But, just so I am clear ... doesn't that specific page (Wikipedia Birthdays) change every single day? Regardless of whether or not anyone goes through all the steps you just discussed? I imagine that, day-by-day, that page changes to reflect the new day's birthdays. No? So, tomorrow (February 26), it will list a whole bunch of new people with the February 26 birthday ... and "erase" the people with the old birthday of February 25. No? Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 21:32, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@John of Reading: Also ... where is this "null edit" that you made to my Sandbox page? I can't seem to find anything in the history tabs? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 21:37, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Joseph A. Spadaro: The software doesn't know which of Wikipedia's 50 million pages (roughly) need to be re-processed at the end of today; it won't get round to updating the category. I picked a random name in Category:Current Wikipedia birthdays and found Shakibul Alam Risvy, whose userboxes page says {{User Wikipedian For|year=2014|month=2|day=21}} - four days ago.
A null edit, by definition, makes no change to the page and doesn't show up in the history. It just gets the software to re-think the templates that are already there. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:49, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Problems opening wikipedia dump file bz2 or its xml

    Hi, I just downloaded enwiki-20200201-pages-articles-multistream.xml.bz2 .

I tried to open it with wikidumpparser. It crashed on the first line, saying "System.Xml.XmlException: 'Unexpected end of file has occurred. The following elements are not closed: mediawiki. Line 45, position 1.'" I extracted the xml file. Too big for notepad++. I tried using firstobject xml editor, which I have used to open xml files larger than a few Gigabites before. Firstobject xml editor just closed without any error message when I tried to open the xml.

I would prefer to open it in .net, but any language will do. I just want a program to be able to look up many articles, and I thought a local file would be better than many calls to the online wikipedia. Perhaps I was wrong. Do you have any suggestions? Is there something wrong with the dump? Is it a newer format? Do you have any suggestions on how to access it at all or alternatively for accessing the online wikipedia often in the best way? Star Lord - 星爵 (talk) 20:15, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have used a few .net libraries some years ago, but as I read the documentation, nowadays I need permission, and probably special permission if I want to make many calls. So I thought the dump might be an alternative, not to disturb anyone too much. Star Lord - 星爵 (talk) 20:50, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This object is presented as a mound relic from Tremper Mound - which is a Hopewell Culture construction, the bird shown is from two thousand years earlier, from the late archaic era, from the Glacial Kame cultural complex. Tremper Mound is famous for the discovery of 100.s of platform effigy pipes, which are in the Ohio Historical Society Collection. Hello I am struggling with this issue. I have created an English page for the Bulgarian artist Nina Kovacheva. This is the address https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nina_Kovacheva . I am not sure whether this page is actually on the internet or in my user space?

A Bulgarian page written in the Cyrillic alphabet already exists https://bg.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9D%D0%B8%D0%BD%D0%B0_%D0%9A%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B0%D1%87%D0%B5%D0%B2%D0%B0

I am struggling to link the new English page to the Bulgarian one. When I click on 'add links' under 'Languages' on the Bulgarian page in the left hand column at the bottom it asks me for 2 things. I enter 'English' but for the second block I enter 'Nina Kovacheva' and I get the message

A page "$2" could not be found on "$1". The external client site "enwiki" did not provide page information for page "Nina Kovacheva".

I don't know what to do. Can you help me or can you link the page for me? Thanks for your assistance — Preceding unsigned comment added by FrankatAGV (talkcontribs) 09:26, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    FrankatAGV, I have linked bg:Нина Ковачева and en:Nina Коvacheva at wikidata:Q13560691. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 09:33, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
FrankatAGV, I've found why it wasn't working - the article is titled Nina Коvacheva, with the Cyrillic К character instead of the latin K. I've requested the page be moved. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 09:43, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Alex Noble, thank you. I am very grateful for this
Alex Noble, Can I ask another question? The title of the page is Nina Kovacheva. Is NINA Kovacheva allowed and how would I change that?
FrankatAGV, Nina Kovacheva is now in mainspace as an article. But it's not likely to remain there long, as it cites no references, and therefore fails to establish that its subject is notable enough to warrant an article on en:Wikipedia. Your priority should be to rectify that, rather than worrying about the way her forename is written. But as for her forename, Wikipedia policy is to write her name the way it is usually written in reliable published sources. Normally I would check that by looking at the references cited in the article; in this case, while there aren't any, I see no reason to use a non-standard capitalisation. How to request edit protection - confirmed users

Sorry, I’ve searched the FAQ, but can’t find the answer to this straightforward question.

(The article I’m concerned about is Duffy (singer), which has had several vandalistic and senseless edits in the past 24 hours, since Duffy’s Instagram revelations. Due to their nature it’s certain that the tabloids in Britain will give it continuing coverage, and that will trigger more vandalism.)

Thanks for your help. Please ping when responding. Thanks. Boscaswell talk 12:33, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Boscaswell, Wikipedia:Requests for page protection; if you have Twinkle installed the RPP button will fill it in for you.
However, there is already a request pending there, so you don't need to do anything this time. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 12:38, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Categories

This question relates to this category page (but also pages on Wikipedia, not on Commons) so not sure whether this properly belongs on another help page:

    https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:After_Dark

I have an interest in this category page as most if not all of the images originated with work I uploaded over the years. Might you help me with a couple of no doubt straightforward questions (apologies for not knowing the answers: I have been editing for a while but only sporadically and have no "advanced" editing skills)?

i/ There was a period when not all of the images I uploaded to English Wikipedia had been moved to Commons, some were only on Wikipedia. How can I check if there are any left which have not yet made it across?

ii/ Over the years I have uploaded other images (not connected with the tv programme After Dark) - how can I search for these?

    Thanks. AnOpenMedium (talk) 13:58, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[6] gives you all your uploaded files (via Wikipedia). Some have been deleted/moved to other titles during the transfer to Commons.
Is that enough for you to search through the files? TigraanClick here to contact me 17:41, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tigraan This is really helpful, thank you so much. May I ask a supplementary, slightly related, question? On more than one occasion I have received the request/suggestion that for the After Dark series, it would be very helpful if there was a Wikipedia category to show when a person has appeared on this programme (ie something like "People who have appeared on tv series After Dark") What is a good way to go about doing this? AnOpenMedium (talk) 12:28, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@AnOpenMedium: You could create the category yourself and add it to the pages of people who appeared. I am not sure, however, of the naming conventions for categories, what the appropriate parent cat(s) would be, or whether such a category would be considered useful by the general community (Wikipedia:Categorization does not say much about whether the category would be appropriate or not). @Tigraan Many thanks. I will research further. AnOpenMedium (talk) 11:26, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Hello

I published the Mambo (artist) page that I manage for my husband. I spent hours publishing and editing the information as advised (structuring the text, adding references ...) and everything went well until another person told me that I was infringing on copyright because I added a photo that I myself had taken in his studio during a photo session but of which my husband had posted a similar photo on facebook. I also added elements of his official biography, available in several publications that I have cited, but again I am told that I am infringing copyright. I was absent from the screens for 15 days for health reasons and when I return the page was simply deleted and none of the people involved in deleting this page answered me despite my questions and my explanations.

I am new to wikipedia and I certainly made mistakes, I just want to understand and make sure to publish this information correctly. I lost hours of work and can no longer access any of the content on this page. Can you help me?

    thank you so much

    Jdemarigny (talk) 15:41, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jdemarigny. I'm afraid that the most helpful advice I can give you is to stop trying to do something that is nearly impossible. Many people have a misunderstanding of Wikipedia, and think that it is a place where you can promote (= "tell the world about") somebody or something important to you: it is not. It is an encyclopaedia, which consists of neutral articles about notable subjects.
If Wikipedia ever has an article on your husband, you will not be able to "manage" it: nobody owns a Wikipedia article, but especially people associated with the subject are strongly discouraged from working on the article directly, and in any case will not have control over its contents. Wikipedia has very little interest in what the subject of an article says about themselves, or what their associates say about them (which means that, even if you get over the copyright question, it is unlikely that much material from his website will be appropriate to a Wikipedia article): it is only interested in what people who are wholly unconnected with the subject have chosen (unprompted by the subject) to publish about them. If such independent, reliably published sources exist, then he is notable in Wikipedia's special sense, and an article can be written about him; but you are discouraged from writing it. If no such sources exist, then no article on him is possible. Sorry. --ColinFine (talk) 16:09, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks ColinFine for the fast and detailed feedback and for sharing your opinion about who and what should be published on Wikipedia.

Mambo (artist) page has not initially been created by my husband or myself. He is an internationally renowned artist, more than 10 books have been published about him and the page had several contributors.

Of course, Wikipedia should not be a self-promoting platform where anyone can create a page about himself, there are plenty of social networks for that.

My understanding is that Wikipedia is a place where everyone can contribute and share valuable information and none of the comments provided by other editors had something to do with the fact that I was related to him and I have been transparent about it as I could hide it.

I could have hidden the fact I was his wife, pay someone to publish his page or as many of our artist friends ask an assistant to do it, but this is where it would be dishonest. I have the source info and don't see why I should not be allowed to update his page with content that has the guarantee to be relevant and accurate.

Isn't Wikipedia a Free Encyclopedia that encourages people to collaborate transparently in order to gather as much relevant information as possible. On his page, I am not talking about him or say what I think about him. I was factual: his bio, list of exhibitions, publications, and collaborations. I am not pretending to have control, of course, anyone can edit or publish his page, I was just contributing as I guess the community appreciates relevant info and again the reason why someone has deleted the page is not that I am his wife but because the picture I published was similar to one posted on Facebook.

Am I sanctioned for being honest and willing to provide accurate and verifiable content here? I was just hoping to get help here as I thought it was Wikipedia's spirit and if anyone found this spirit back I would appreciate his kind help. Thanks Jdemarigny (talk) 17:02, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • Hello, Jdemarigny. I think ColinFine was too quick on the trigger and gave you a standardized answer without looking at the details of the situation here.
As far as I can see, the page Mambo (artist) was deleted last December after that short discussion due to it being a copyright violation of either this or that page. The copyright violation is about the text, not the image(s). (If you wrote those pre-existing biographies and are OK with licensing them for use on Wikipedia and everywhere else, see this page.) So the deletion had nothing to do with you being his wife or something else. This was explained to you already on January 4 but you probably missed it.
That being said, looking at those biographies, they are quite far from what an encyclopedia article should look like (example: probing painter, travelling designer and observant graphic artist is WP:PEACOCK). You are welcome to resubmit a (copyvio-free) page via WP:AFC but make sure to include sources that show he is "notable" - in particular, the most significant of those more than 10 books [that] have been published about him. TigraanClick here to contact me 17:27, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Tigraan, for explaining more clearly. Jdemarigny, I apologise for jumping to conclusions: we get many people asking for help here who are trying to do what Ithought you were trying to do. --ColinFine (talk) 17:32, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jdemarigny: Perhaps the deleting admin, MER-C (who will be notified by this mention), will be willing to WP:REFUND you a copy of the page to save some work (especially since apparently some other editors contributed), since you now seem to understand and respect the relevant policies. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 23:49, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you AlanM1 and to all of ou for your support and understanding, I am truly sorry for those mistakes and believe I have now great advice to publish a page properly and that would be amazing if MER-C could be willing to WP:REFUND me a copy of the page to save a lot of work.Jdemarigny (talk) 02:45, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Copyright problems cannot be restored or shared. In addition, I refuse to restore promotional content because it is not in the best interests of the encyclopedia. MER-C 09:15, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Flying Spaghetti Monster as an ideology has no relation to the comedic and sensationalist The Church Of The Flying Spaghetti Monster (COTFSM) and therefor share a different Wikipedia page. Their combined appearance on one page as reference is a serious bastardisation of the truth.

There is no true correlation between the satirical misuse of the concept and its true ultimate question and response. The commercialization of the theory on social media in example FaceBook lend it no credible opinion on the matter but is merely used as another form of entertainment with little or no real means of educating its members.

I respectfully request and suggest that you formally disconnect the ideals/manifestos/opinions and imagery related to the church of the flying spaghetti monster (COTFSM)from it's original body of thought. removal of empty sections that have been empty for many years

Is there a policy, guideline or recommendation, on how to deal with empty sections? In my opinion they are usually bad style, bloating articles with what are essentially work notes that don't contribute to the article. If an editor doesn't have the time to fill a section with content, they should also refrain from imposing a structure to future contributors. So if I were to go through Category:Articles with empty sections, starting with the oldest dates (currently 2008!), and start to remove a lot of them, would that be viewed as an improvement, or could it be viewed as destructive? -- Theoprakt (talk) 21:42, 26 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    User citing their own articles..

I saw something which seemed slightly suspicious and wanted to see what the WP guideline on it is. Basically, there is an account created today which is inserting content and sources into articles. At first it appeared to be totally ordinary, but upon inspection I realized the name of the author of the articles was the same as the user account - that is, the user is citing their own articles. For the record, these are scientific articles which are being cited. A google search does not reveal any information about the author as far as I can tell. The user account has not made any edits which do not involve inserting the sources they wrote into articles, if that is significant. Is there a guideline on this? Thanks! ‡ Єl Cid of ᐺalencia ᐐT₳LKᐬ 04:06, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, El cid, el campeador. The relevant guideline here is WP:SELFCITE. Basically, yeah, what that account is doing is self-promotion since they're citing only their own work. If they were seeking to improve Wikipedia articles about a topic they know well, they'd surely cite sources from all sorts of authors. After all, that's what they did when they were writing their scientific articles. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 04:12, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ALIZAMAROM, What is the task you are trying to do when the software presents you with a CAPTCHA? --ColinFine (talk)
ALIZAMAROM, a common mistake (which I myself have made) with CAPTCHA is entering the required characters in the text box and then clicking the "refresh" button next to it – this does not work, because the purpose of "refresh" is to get another character string to re-type when the previous one was too difficult for the user to read.
Instead, one has to type the characters as required, and then scroll down and click the "Publish changes" button.
Also, I notice you have typed your query in ALL CAPITALS. Apart from this generally being interpreted as SHOUTING, and therefore rude, on the internet, this might not work with CAPTCHA, which might require lower case (I don't know for sure as I've never tried to use ALL CAPS in a CAPTCHA myself). Request for undeletion

ello, I’d like to request that the article on Bob Quaranta be undeleted. It has existed for about 10 years without incident and new information, such as recording credits is always being added. Google even used a snippet of the bio for their Bob Quaranta mini profile. A notice was placed on the article that it needed resources. I fully intended to do that and have been compiling them. I just didn’t have the time to get to it before the article was deleted. I should mention that when the tag was originally placed on the article, I removed it but I was fully intending to follow up on the resourcing. The tag was soon replaced with a warning not to remove it and I left it alone. A week later the article was deleted. I looked at the reasons why but they didn’t appear valid and was wondering if the deletion was a punishment for removing the tag. I think an administrator’s job is to make sure an article is presented correctly, not to make a value judgement on the validity of the information. Valuable to who? It may not be valuable to a given administrator but it may have value to people interested in this person’s participation in musical styles such as Latin Jazz and Salsa. Bob Quaranta also is mentioned in other Wiki articles: “Just Visiting This Planet” by Jellybean, “Cosas del Alma” studio album by Adalberto Santiago, Ed Palermo Big Band. All the information in the article such as recording credits, grammy nominations and record chart positions is all verifiable. I’d be very great full if you would restore the article and I will get right to the resourcing. (edit conflict)Dontwantone, I have undeleted the article and moved it to Draft:Bob Quaranta. Please add your sources there, and then we can revisit if it belongs in article space or not. As for the original deletion, the article is about a living person. As an article about a living person, it is extremely important (more so than for other articles) that all information be verifiable, i.e. adequately sourced. The proposed deletion for biographies of living persons process requires that a source be provided at the time the deletion tag is removed, otherwise the article is subject to deletion in 7 days after the tag is applied. This is an attempt to prevent damaging the reputations of living people by keeping unverifiable information about them around. Again, please add your sources, and we can move the article back then. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:22, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    official photo

what constitutes an official photo and how do i code for that in the sandbox? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nataliebrem (talkcontribs) 16:53, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Nataliebrem. Wikipedia has no concept of an "official photo". Any photo may be used in a Wikipedia article as long as
    1. It meets Wikipedia's criteria for copyright. This normally means that it is either in the public domain (usually because it is a very old photo), or the copyright holder has explicitly released it under a suitable licence. Most images on the Internet are not free in this sense. In limited cases, non-free images may be used, but Wikipedia is much stricter than most sites about this: see NFCC; and
    2. a consensus of editors agree that the image is appropriate in the article. Like everywhere else, Wikipedia works by consensus, and no single editor has an overriding power to say that something does or does not belong in an article. (And especially, the subject of an article, and people associated with that subject, do not have that power).
See Help:Upload for more on this. --ColinFine (talk) 17:01, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Sorry, I don't follow. Wikipedia does not have any means of, nor mechanism in place, to signify a photograph as "official" whatever that means. Perhaps you can explain in a little more detail about what you're trying to do? (also, please sign your messages with four tildes like this: ~~~~. ) --Jayron32 17:01, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Ray S Walters

[[]] I would like to add info on my father who was a very popular Restaurateur (and President of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, DC as well as President of the Epicurean Club of DC) who owned and operated 6 restaurants in DC.

Ray S Walters 11/3/1910 – 1/29/1991 Born in Paris, TN and raised with 7 siblings in Paducah, KY. Ray started his Restaurant career at the age of 18 at Child’s Restaurant in Chicago, IL. Over the years, Ray worked his way up from being a Porter, Busboy, Waiter, Dishwasher, Salad boy, Chef’s Assistant, Chef, Kitchen Manager and finally Restaurant Manager. Child’s transferred him to different cities where he managed the opening of their new restaurants. After he opened the new Child’s Restaurant in Washington, D.C., Ray opened his own restaurant, “The Loop” in Mt. Pleasant, N.W. Washington, D.C.

That was the first of 6 restaurants he and his wife Anna and son Ratus owned and operated in Washington.

Ray went on to becoming President of The Washington Restaurant Association for several years and then, the first American born President of the Epicurean Club of Washington, D.C. Again, serving as President for several years.

The Walters family restaurants included “The Loop”, “Napoleons”, “Café de la Paix”, “The Seagull”, “Café Burgundy” and his son’s super club, “Ray Walters’ STABLES”.

Ray S Walters received many honors including Restaurateur of the Year.

Ray met his wife Anna in 1929 while they both worked at Child’s in Chicago. Anna, at 17, was showcased in a picture window as she cooked (flipped) flapjacks, attracting customers. They married in 1931. Anna passed away in 2000.

Their 50th Anniversary Picture In front of their retirement home, Sarasota, FL

    Question on the Fascism Page

I had a questions about the Fascism. First, I am coming from complete sincerity and and respect for all the work that Wikipedia has done and all the help it has proved to millions of people.

    Extended content

I have been doing some research on fascism with everything that is going along in the political world of the US and the talks about fascism. I came across some pretty interesting articles and books on fascism and it's association with the progressive. In particular from John P. Diggins who is, "American professor of history at the University of California, Irvine, Princeton University, and Director of the City University of New York Graduate Center." (Wikipedia). In one of his articles titles, "Flirtation with Fascism: American Pragmatic Liberals and Mussolini's Italy" He quotes Democratic Congressmen Milford W. Howard saying:

"This is the day of pragmatism, not dogmatism - of realism, but a realism that can also be rich in spiritual ideals, and I want to go on record at the beginning of this unpretentious book by avowing my faith in Benito Mussolini, Italy's great premier, and Fascism, the child of his marvelous brain, as the highest expression of pragmatic philosophy of government whose invariable formula is: Does it work?"

Diggins goes on in the article describing many Left leaning intellectuals and leaders having respect and desiring for fascism in the United States. Diggins also wrote a book called "Mussolini and Fascism: The View from America." I have not read the book yet but from what I can tell is that there was a good amount of desire from progressives to institute fascism in America in the early 20s and 30s.

What I am asking is the possibility of a section on the fascism page about the influence that it had on so many people in America in the 20s and 30s. Wikipedia is about information and knowledge and I think this is an important part of our American History. I am not saying fascism is left or right on the political scale. All I am saying is that as a society we need to know our history and this is apart of the American history.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Wikipedia is feeding Google info...how to correct?

In googling my company (Rocky Vista University), it pulls up a list of "Notable Alumni," which includes entirely incorrect information. I called Google about removing this, but they said the information is actually coming from Wikipedia. I looked through our listing but can't find anything to do with alumni on our page. Can you tell me where this info might be originating from within Wikipedia? As well as how to remove/edit it?

    204.133.176.94 (talk) 22:47, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but we do not know where Google would get this information from. They compile information from throughout the internet and often display it in a way that implies it comes from Wikipedia. As you say there is no 'alumni' section at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine and it is impossible to say how Google would find it. Wikipedia has no control over what Google displays and it does occasionally cause issues. There is a feedback link at the bottom of the panel in the Google results page but wouldn't like to say how effective this may be. Eagleash (talk) 22:56, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The only part copied directly from Wikipedia is the text paragraph which ends "Wikipedia". See more at our stock reply Template:HD/GKG However, I noticed Google's list of alleged alumni matches Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine#Notable alumni. I guess Google's software thinks Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine sound similar enough to assume they are part of the same college and show alumni from the latter when Rocky Vista University is searched. Wikipedia is not responsible for this, and we are not going to remove alumni from Michigan State University just because Google may use it in a wrong way. The two articles link to eachother because they both display Template:Osteopathic medical schools, and they are both linked in Category:Osteopathic medical schools in the United States. This may also influence Google but it's all standard Wikipedia practice and not something we will change. I'm sorry for the confusion Google creates but we cannot redesign our encyclopedia every time an external site does something bad with valid information from us. And Google's algorithms are secret anyway so we might have to make a change, wait to se whether Google changes, make another change, and so on. And it's still just a guess that their error has anything to do with Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:28, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And what's doubly frustrating I'm sure is that the feedback button doesn't let you do any comments - only changing an existing field or removing the place altogether. Call them back with the good info above. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 03:28, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I checked Wikidata items for both schools and found nothing out of place there either. It's a Google bug. Whoever at Google that said they were getting it from the Wikipedia article for Rocky Vista didn't actually look at that article, since it has no alumni list. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 06:57, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The poster only said: "I called Google about removing this, but they said the information is actually coming from Wikipedia". It doesn't say which Wikipedia article. The Google search links the Rocky Vista article but only after a text paragraph at the start. It doesn't mean that any of the later information is from that or any Wikipedia article. A lot of people are mislead by this. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:54, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help with First Article. The Fish need you!

Hello I've written my first article. I have ensured to try and make it well written, with several sources obtained using Google scholar and days of research. The problem is getting appropriate images. I've been able to find a really good image that is on wikipedia commons, and a second that I'm not quite as sure of but still confident in it's usage. Yet I have issues implementing them into my article. This is my first article ( I practiced on the sandbox, the final version shall be published under Gramma dejongi) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:TheDarkMaster2/sandbox

And the two images, one for the species box https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gramma_dejongi.JPG
    https://www.reef2rainforest.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/IMG_0738-1024x618.jpg
I would really like some assistance if it cannot be too much. this is my first article and true contribution outside of erasing trolling. (Apparently the Ringed Map Turtle killed JFK according to trolls)TheDarkMaster2 (talk) 23:22, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, TheDarkMaster2. To add c:File:Gramma dejongi.JPG to the taxobox, you simply replace the value of the image parameter with the name of the file, without the brackets or File:, but with the full filename (preserving case), thus:
    image = Gramma dejongi.JPG

(Sorry, TheDarkMaster2, accidentally published my answer incomplete). As for the second image, provided that it is licenced by the copyright holder appropriately, you can upload it to Commons: see Help:Upload. Why do you think that this image is free to use? The Reef2rainforest terms of service seem to imply otherwise, though I've only skimmed them. --ColinFine (talk) 00:06, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It was stated by one of the websites to be fair use. Plus an image of this morph is HIGHLY needed. Not only for it's distinct appearance, but also for the fact that it is one of the few Marine Fish color breeds, and the first color morph of The Basslet family and genus to be bred.TheDarkMaster2 (talk) 00:15, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid that "stated to be fair use" is not enough, TheDarkMaster2. Wikipedia's equivalent of "fair use" is "non-free content", which is only allowed in very restricted circumstances, detailed in NFCC - the one that usually rules it out is that there must be no reasonable chance of obtaining a free image of the subject. We require that the copyright holder explicitly license the image under a licence such as CC-BY-SA, which will allow anybody to reuse it for any purpose: see DCM. Unfortunately this means that many articles lack pictures that would be improved by adding them if a suitably licensed one could be found. --ColinFine (talk) 01:10, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The ends of my columns are adding an extra line break

I am adding parishes to the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Newark#Parishes_of_the_Archdiocese_of_Newark.

I attempted to make the list into columns because it's quite long. The last item in each column has an extra line break before it and I cannot seem to fix it. Can anyone help please? Zachary Kirkhorn

I googled "CFO of Tesla" I got the old one. Wikipedia missed that Zachary Kirkhorn at 34 years old is now the CFO of Tesla. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.20.173.91 (talk) 04:24, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That is Google's fault, not Wikipedia's. Tesla, Inc. accurately describes the CFO as Zach Kirkhorn. I recommend reporting the error to Google. Thanks. Darylgolden(talk) Ping when replying 05:13, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
... and it has said so since 2019-01-30, almost 13 months and 1000 edits ago! I wonder what it takes to get Google to re-read an article. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 07:19, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
They read it within the last day. The problem is their attempt to automatically extract information from the Internet. The Google search CFO of Tesla shows a box saying "Ahuja, Deepak" and linking to Deepak Ahuja. That probably means Google thinks the article says he is the CFO. The lead says "He is most well known for being the former CFO of Tesla". The infobox says "Occupation Chief Financial Officer" and "Known for Tesla, Inc". Further reading says: Ahuja, Deepak. Tesla CFO Deepak Ahuja discusses Elon Musk and the auto industry – via Vimeo. Google quotes the latter which is the correct title of the linked page, but three years old.
