Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

slight change to user name

how do i do this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brinkeguthrie (talkcontribs) 02:28, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Brinkeguthrie: You can request a change at WP:CHUN RudolfRed (talk) 02:41, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This is the form that you can use to request to change your name: Special:GlobalRenameRequest Félix An (talk) 02:42, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure about this, but you might have to update your custom signature, if you have one. Félix An (talk) 02:44, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Does it count as a conflict of interest if I edit my school's Wikipedia article?

I am a student of North Toronto Christian School, and I have edited that article numerous times. I am not paid, given academic bonuses, required, encouraged, or otherwise rewarded to edit said article. I adhered to WP:NPOV while editing it. Does that count as a conflict of interest? If it does, I will refrain from editing the article until I graduate. Thanks! Félix An (talk) 02:34, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it does. Per WP:COI, "Any external relationship can trigger a conflict of interest. That someone has a conflict of interest is a description of a situation, not a judgement about that person's opinions, integrity, or good faith." Clarityfiend (talk) 10:48, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think it depends on the edits. I don't think a mere student needs to avoid editing the article if they can do so properly. 331dot (talk) 10:53, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Félix An: COI is not yes or no. It is a continuum. We do not ask all citizens of a country to refrain from editing articles about the country. In your case, I feel that you should declare your student status on your user page and on the talk page of the article. Declare pretty much what you said in this question, and ask other editors to notify you of any unconscious bias that may have crept into your edits. This is softer than the request edit process. It is less burdensome on you and on the edit reviewers, and it will only work if you are really careful about NPOV. -Arch dude (talk) 18:11, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How can I edit Wikipedia in China?

I plan on studying in China for the next four years. The last time I travelled to China, I could use my VPN to access Wikipedia, but I couldn't edit, because the VPN's IP address was blacklisted by Wikipedia. I would like to edit Wikipedia while I am in China. Am I allowed to apply for an exemption? Thanks! Félix An (talk) 03:18, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you may apply for an exemption to the block. See WP:IPECPROXY RudolfRed (talk) 04:47, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

LLC or separate company

Courtesy link: Draft:Affinity Federal Credit Union

Hello, I recently started a draft for given credit union. But I'm confused as to whether Affinity Federal Credit Union is the same as Affinity Federal Credit Union LLC. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask for it but it seems more suited than The Teahouse or Reference Desk so I'd appreciate it if someone could help me. SenatorLEVI 04:57, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SenatorLEVI: Bloomberg seems to think so. This page for the LLC lists the same web site that names itself Affinity Federal Credit Union. I would ordinarily admonish you to verify notability, but based on the history section on their "about us" page, I don't think you will have a problem. Of course, you still must deal with more than five earlier names of the organization. -Arch dude (talk) 06:10, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Information about a Creative studies.

Hi, I am from Sri Lanka, and I want to add information about creative studies. In that case, I will have to mention some creative studies universities in Sri Lanka. Is it a reason to block my account? Thank You. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AMDT2020 (talkcontribs) 05:26, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You are not blocked; you simply aren't WP:AUTOCONFIRMED.
But before that, you should read WP:COI and WP:YFA. Then, if and only if the subject meets our inclusion criteria, use the WP:Article wizard. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 06:09, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a new Article

Hi, If I want to create a new article what is the procedure I should follow? Thank You. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AMDT2020 (talkcontribs) 05:30, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@AMDT2020:The subject of any article on Wikipedia must be notable by our definition (WP:N), so your very first task is to make sure your subject is notable. We will delete any article on a non-notable subject, no matter how good the article is otherwise (see WP:AMOUNT). We delete more than 200 articles every day for lack of notability. Once you have picked a notable subject, go to WP:YFA to create your article. -Arch dude (talk) 05:46, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Changing to English language.

Becoming a autoconfirmed user.

Hi, I need to become an autoconfirmed user. Any instructions to follow? Thank You. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AMDT2020 (talkcontribs) 06:22, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@AMDT2020: Why? Even when you are autoconfirmed, I strongely advise against directly creating articles in mainspace, because new articles in mainpsace have high expectations. For now you can use the draft namespace. Victor Schmidt (talk) 06:37, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, AMDT2020. Once your account has been active for at least four days, and has made at least ten edits, your account will be autoconfirmed. This will give you the ability to create new articles directly, edit semi-protected articles, move articles to new titles and upload files. Please read Wikipedia:User access levels for more information, and use these additional powers to improve the encyclopedia in full accordance with its policies and guidelines. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:56, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
AMDT2020, if you become autoconfirmed and create an article in mainspace that is not suitable for mainspace, it will be moved to a draft or nominated for deletion by new page patrollers. As a result, I would recommend creating a draft and going through WP:AFC. Pahunkat (talk) 09:13, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

William Leslie Hooper

I am trying to upload and add a photo of my great grandfather, William Leslie Hooper (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Leslie_Hooper) to his page, but cannot figure out how to add it. The photo is 102 years old. I have had in in my Ancestry.com database for years, and found the Wikipedia entry, but no photo. I have one to enter, if I can just figure out how to do so. Thanks. - William Hooper Gleason — Preceding unsigned comment added by VergerBill (talkcontribs) 06:26, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@VergerBill: This is a two-step process. First, upload the photo to Commons by going to the Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard and following the instructions. The only tricky part is declaring the correct copyright license, which in your case is "public domain due to the age" (however that is stated in the wizard). After you get the file uploaded, follow the further instructions to add the image to the article, or come back here for further help. -Arch dude (talk) 07:37, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a draft Page.

I want to create a page. I feel like, it is advisable to create a draft page first. So any steps to follow? Thank You. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AMDT2020 (talkcontribs) 08:47, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

AMDT2020 To draft and submit an article(not just a "page"), you may use Articles for Creation. To increase your chances of success, you might also wish to read Your First Article and use the new user tutorial. You will increase your chances of success even more if you first spend much time editing existing articles in areas that interest you, to get a feel for how Wikipedia operates and what is expected of article content. Successfully creating a new article is the absolute hardest task to perform on Wikipedia, and new users who dive right in often end up disappointed, frustrated, and with hurt feelings as their work is mercilessly edited, criticized, and deleted by others. I don't want you to have bad feelings, so you should go into the process learning as much as you can first. 331dot (talk) 09:05, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Instead of creating a new section for each question you have, you can add follow up questions to this existing section. 331dot (talk) 09:07, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nahal Ha'Arava

Hi. Why was my latest edit on Nahal Ha'Araava not accepted? I am trying to follow the guidelines but they are so complicated and difficult. I used your edit features AND provided a source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yitzchakm2 (talkcontribs) 09:45, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yitzchakm2 According to the edit history, Possibly reverted your edit with the edit summary "sourced to "hiking map"". I don't speak for Possibly, but from what I can see your only wrote the citation as "Israel Hiking Map"; that is insufficient. We need to know things like who published the map, when, the cartographer/author, and so on. so that someone could verify the information. You may learn more about citing references at this page. You might also want to use the new user tutorial. 331dot (talk) 09:49, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

but still waiting to be published or move to article

Kindly help — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrkishorpantmbd (talkcontribs) 10:58, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Mrkishorpantmbd: I added a template to the top of your draft so you can submit it for review. Before you submit it, please be sure that everything is supported by a reference (e.g. bodybuilding title, cricket, birth date/place) and that the text is encyclopedic (e.g. "Fitness Freak" is not). Also, Wikipedia articles cannot be used as references - see WP:CIRCULAR. Happy editing! (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) GoingBatty (talk) 12:16, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Mrkishorpantmbd: The draft has not been submitted for review. This can be done by adding to the top of the 'markup'. However, if you were to do so now I think the item would be declined as it stands. There is little in the way of reliable sourcing (most seem to be 'music player' sites or similar) and Wikipedia cannot be used as a source per WP:UGC. Please review the guidelines at WP:NMUSIC for more information on notability. Please feel free to continue to develop the item in draftspace and to submit when it is ready. Thank you. How to list my company information on Wiki pedia

I want to know how to list my company information on wikipdeia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nexeltdigital (talkcontribs) 11:00, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Nexeltdigital: Please do not write about any company with which you have a connection. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and cannot be used for promotional or publicity purposes or as a form of directory. If the company is notable volunteer editors will create an item in the fullness of time. Please also see WP:COI and WP:PAID for other reasons why this is seriously discouraged. Your username may also be a problem as it cannot imply shared or company use. A change should be requested via WP:UNC or that account abandoned and a new one created with a more suitable name. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 12:10, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Where has "Integrated Management" gone.

For many years there has been an extensive articled titled "Integrated Management". I looked today and it is gone and a message saying it does not exist but it can be created. How can this happen with no record of why, how and who? The link to the page was https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_management Is there a mechanism for restoring the page? If another was created by me how can we stop malicious 3rd parties deleting it. I am not a Wikipedia expert. There is also no page for Integrated Management Systems which I believe already existed. Any assistance would be much appreciated. Ian Dalling (talk) 11:50, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ian Dalling: If you click on that link you provided, you will find a pink notice. It states that the item was moved to draftspace as it contained close paraphrasing (I.e. copyright violations). There is a 'redlink' to the draft where there is another notice which gives instructions on how to retrieve it. However, as it apparently contained copyright issues it might not be possible to restore it. Eagleash (talk) 12:01, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Trotsky

ON THE PAGE ABOUT TROTSKYthere is a reference:

"What is the ethic of the parasite-host relationship? Is it immoral? No, it is natural for the parasite to seek a host on which it can feed, and it is natural for the host to attempt to dislodge him. The Jew is obeying his God when he fulfills his life mission of being a parasite, of finding and controlling a host. It is the sense of his own historical rightness, as Trotsky formulated it in Communism, which led the Jew to believe that he was indeed a Chosen People, born to live off the work of others, and to take their goods and lands.

It would be easier to figure out what's up if you posted which browser you use, not which brand of tablet. This is unlikely to be a Wikipedia issue, and very likely something to do with your software. IAmNitpicking (talk) 13:11, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sutton Hoo Helmet article issues

Hi,

The end of this article is littered with large red writing that 'The time allocated for running scripts has expired'. I have no idea what that means or how to set about fixing it. Could someone have a quick look at it? Thanks Fortnum (talk) 14:05, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Fortnum. It works fine for me. But it is an extraordinarily long article (273k bytes), and something is running out of time in downloading it. Since the message you get is about "user scripts", I was going to suggest that some script that you have installed in your common.js must be taking too long to load this particular article; but you don't seem to have any .js files, so I don't know what it is - I would suspect that the speed of your connection is a factor. I suggest taking it to WP:VPT. --ColinFine (talk) 14:59, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine: Thanks for having a look - yes, it's a huge article. I have gigabit internet, so my connexion shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for the VPT suggestion: if it keeps happening, I'll do just that. Cheers, Fortnum (talk) 18:41, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine and Fortnum:The message refers to "scripts", not "user scripts". According to Wikipedia:Lua error messages, the message indicates that the server spent too much time running the LUA code that sits behind common templates such as sfn and cite book. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:07, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@John of Reading:Thanks for that. I've tried loading the page again and it hasn't given the same error messages (typical). I can't think of another article I've come across with 833 references and a sizeable bibliography - there's clearly much scholarship in that article. I assume the size of it, together with the amount of stuff it has to load (plus a large number of page requests due to its topicality) have caused this, albeit temporarily. I'll flag it up if it happens again. Fortnum (talk) 14:58, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

List copyright question

I'm not sure where else to ask this, so I'll put this here: I've come across this list article: List of symbols designated by the Anti-Defamation League as hate symbols, and it seems to be sourced entirely to this page (which has a copyright notice of © 2021 Anti-Defamation League. All rights reserved.). I think there may be some policy/guideline page about lists based on/copied from one source, but I can't seem to find it, so my question is, is this a copyright issue? Thanks . Seagull123 Φ 14:32, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Seagull123: I don't think it's a copyright violation due to the clear attribution given by the article's title, any more than List of films with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes would be a copyright violation of Rotten Tomatoes. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 19:15, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Contribute an Article

Dear sirs,

I need help I want to contribute an article how do I go about ?

Arif — Preceding unsigned comment added by Suzafa (talkcontribs) 14:37, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Suzafa: To create an article, follow these steps:
1. Read Your first article carefully.
2. If you don't have an account, consider creating one (it's not essential, but it makes some things easier, especially communicating with other editors) and logging in.
3. Learn the basics of editing with the Wikipedia:Tutorial
4. Make sure the subject is notable enough to warrant a stand-alone article
5. Gather reliable sources to cite in the article
6. Make sure no article on the subject exists under a different title by typing the subject into the search box and clicking 'Search'
7. Use the Article Wizard to create a draft.
8. Create the article, including all your references, making sure you adhere to the Manual of Style and our article layout guidelines. Base the article on what the references say, rather than on what you know.
9. Once you believe that your draft meets Wikipedia's requirements, submit it for review by picking the "Submit your draft for review" button in the draft.
10. Be aware that many drafts are not accepted the first time, or even the second time they are submitted for review, for failing to adhere to our policies and guidelines. New articles by new users are particularly likely not to be accepted, due to new users' unfamiliarity with our rules. Consider gaining experience by editing existing articles before attempting to create new ones. Seagull123 Φ 14:45, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Short descriptions for Swahili Wikipedia

I'm an admin and regular contributor to the Swahili Wikipedia. Me and my fellow admins would like to add short descriptions to our articles. I was about to import and partly translate the necessary template from the English Wikipedia, when I noticed that some of our articles do already have short descriptions (e.g. https://sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/London). I expected to see a template for that in the source code, but to my surprise, I did not see any. Now I am wondering how the short descriptions appear on those pages without a template. Can anyone explain? Once I understand it, I could use the same method to add short descriptions to other articles. Dogo (talk) 14:40, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, ChriKo. If there is no short description for an article in en-wiki, the software gets it from the associated Wikidata item (d:Q84 in the case of London). I don't know that all editions do that, but it seems likely. --ColinFine (talk) 15:02, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the English Wikipedia no longer gets short descriptions from Wikidata (after Wikipedia:Village pump (WMF)/Archive 2#Update: Scheduled shutdown of Wikidata descriptions on EnWiki). All other wikis get short descriptions only from Wikidata, and short description will not work. * Pppery * it has begun... 15:15, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot guys. Now we know what to do. Dogo (talk) 04:22, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, ChriKo, Swahili probably doesn’t have problems with description vandalism (though you’d only notice it on mobile), if so then no need to have that fight with W?F. Your best bet is to add Kiswahili descriptions to Wikidata. If the language location detection doesn’t show you Swahili labels on 'data, you can add a Babel box to your user page, which will force it to show. Editing my watch list

After some years of relentless editing I have 97,553 on my watchlist, I should like to start again but it doesn’t seem possible to edit, I get the error message “[YBmV4wpAICkAACbm8YEAAAFL] 2021-02-02 18:12:47: Fatal exception of type "WMFTimeoutException" how can I reduce my watchlist to a maneagable number please? Theroadislong (talk) 18:16, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Theroadislong, That's pretty big. I've got 12,000 entries, which is too many, and that seems to tax the system to access. I think, but I'm not sure, that the system can deal with the raw watch list even if it can handle the full size of the regular watchlist. Try: Special:EditWatchlist/raw
Your list may be too big for even that option. If someone doesn't respond soon you might try the village pump technical.
While this won't solve your immediate problem, going forward please be aware that there is now a temporary watch option. 98% of the things I want to watch, I only want to watch for a little while so I'm using the temporary watch option with a one-month time duration which I hope will keep my watchlist from growing out of control. S Philbrick(Talk) 18:33, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, yes I'm restricting my watches to 1 week for most articles going forward! Theroadislong (talk) 18:43, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Using Special:EditWatchlist/raw works, but very slowly and clunkily, I've removed all articles beginning with A and B but my article watchlist doesn't reflect this yet? Theroadislong (talk) 19:05, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the help, I have just noticed that I can clear the watchlist completely which will be quicker in the long run, though a little strange after 14 years of having an almost endless watchlist every morning! Theroadislong (talk) 19:18, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Theroadislong, I agree that editing the raw watchlist is slowing clunky but everything is relative, and I was thinking that slowing clunky was better than not working at all:) I think it takes some time for removals to be reflected but I see that you've cleared out everything so that point is probably moot. Yeah, I think the temporary watchlist option is very useful. I do have a few hundred that I'd like to save permanently, so I'm not quite ready to blow away the whole list and start over, but maybe I'll try that S Philbrick(Talk) 19:03, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's given me a new lease of life, I'm not burdened by having to trawl through thousands of articles and talk pages on my watch list each morning! Theroadislong (talk) 19:22, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Note how the "scu" in "Discuss" is underlined. This is apparently either a mistake or vandalism. I would correct it but the page source code says the page should not be edited as a bot will overwrite it anyway. How can this be fixed? JIP | Talk 18:34, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@JIP: This formatting comes straight from the bot's source code at User:RMCD bot/requestedmoves.php, so is presumably deliberate. You'd best discuss this with the bot operator. -- John of Reading (talk) 18:54, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I did, and the bot operator replied that this was by design, because if the whole word was underlined, the user wouldn't notice it changes when hovering over it. JIP | Talk 14:52, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Closing alternate account

Hello. I have been trying to figure out how to close my secondary account, User:AuditoreEzio as I am no longer using it and I am certain I won't in the future either. If my memory does not fail me, the secondary account's creation was mainly a response to login problems I encountered using my main account on mobile devices. I would appreciate if someone knows if there is any way, any procedure for closing or "blocking/banning" (not deleting/erasing from existence) an account? Or do I have to ask the admins for that? Thanks. --- SilentResident (talk ✉ | contribs ✎) 18:49, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SilentResident: It's not really necessary, but if you prefer it be blocked from editing I can do that. I'll make it clear it was at your request, not due to misbehavior. Just let me know if that's what you want. --Floquenbeam (talk) 18:53, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)@SilentResident: You can put a note on the old account's user page that you are no longer using it, and point people to your new user name. As far as I know, there's no way to disable an account short of getting blocked. This isn't a retirement so using that banner won't be appropriate. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 18:57, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Floquenbeam:,@Timtempleton: is it ok if we block it? The reason of my concerns is that I lost the login credentials for this account, and I no longer am maintaining the email associated with it either, and I would feel safer and less anxious if the account is blocked to prevent hackers from stealing it or/and vandalize Wikipedia. A block would definitely soothe my safety concerns. I thought I had the account's login credentials with me this whole time, only to realize today the problem. Hence I am coming too late here to seek help. --- SilentResident (talk ✉ | contribs ✎) 19:25, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Misinformation

I noticed that the Kamala Harris Wikipedia page says she is African American. I am very familiar with the woman and I assure you she is not. I was going to edit it to reflect the truth since that is what Wikipedia was once used for, but the page is locked to prevent vandalism or something of the sort. Lithuanian Jewish History

THE LITHUANIAN SLAUGHTER OF ITS JEWS during the Holocaust

Extended content

[1]

The testimonies published tell of the destruction of Jewish life in Lithuania. Perpetrators of the massacre, most of them Lithuanians, acted with enthusiasm and in many cases without help or supervision from the invading Germans.

The testimonies are not pleasant to read. They tell of the horrors and evils inflicted on Lithuanian Jews. Many echo the same pattern of degradation and slaughter: Lithuanians first attacked Jews morally and spiritually, imposing assorted humiliating labours, torture and other evils; then began their physical annihilation.

Armed bands of self-described "partisans” took control of Lithuanian towns as soon as the occupying Soviets left. Often, even before the Germans arrived, these bands started to terrorise and abuse the Jewish population: Partisans and others broke into Jewish homes and brazenly looted Jewish property. Jailings, torture, and summary executions began shortly afterward. First to be killed were Jews with Soviet connections; later, any perceived or invented offence could mean execution, or a Jew could be killed for no reason at all. Jews’ non-moveable possessions were claimed by their Lithuanian neighbors, particularly the partisans and their families.

In towns and villages, new civilian administrations suddenly emerged from underground with the German invasion. Lithuanian mayors, police chiefs and civil servants worked hand in hand with the partisans and a few Germans. These new governments often worked to extort money, jewellery and household goods from the Jews.

Jews were harassed and subjected to harsh decrees. They were forced to wear yellow armbands, forbidden to walk on sidewalks, barred from trading or even talking with non-Jews, and permitted to leave their houses only at certain times each day. Jews had to report for forced labour that in many cases was designed to be demeaning, harsh and degrading. Guarded by armed Lithuanians, they were constantly tormented, humiliated, beaten and starved.

Jews were forced to remove Torah scrolls and holy books from synagogues and study houses and burn them. Rabbis were humiliated, often having their beards cut or ripped off. Jewish women were frequently raped, and often tortured and killed afterward.

Within several weeks of the German invasion, most Jews were forced out of their homes and confined in small, closed areas, without food or water, and subject to constant harrassment and torture as they were prepared for the final slaughter. Many died during this process. Often their former neighbors turned up to watch Jews being beaten and bludgeoned. In other cases, Jews were crowded into tiny ghettos in rundown areas. Hunger, thirst, and filth was common, and disease followed.

Source: THE LITHUANIAN SLAUGHTER OF ITS JEWS The Testimonies from 121 Jewish survivors of the Holocaust in Lithuania, recorded by Leyb Koniuchowsky, `1in Displaced Persons’ camps (1946-48)

Eventually, the Jews were taken to pits dug in nearby forests to be shot. Amid the chaos of this organized slaughter, many were buried alive in the pits. At times partisans broke small children on their knees or bashed their heads on trees before throwing them, half dead, into a pit.

WHO COMMITTED CRIMES, AND WHO KNEW

From the 121 testimonies published here, it is clear that the slaughter of the Jews was widely known. Townsfolk saw Jews being confined, tortured, abused and taken away. Peasants with wagons at times helped to transport Jews and their property.

Besides that portion of the population that actively participated in the slaughter of the Jews, or engaged in torture or rape, many local people appropriated or "inherited" Jews’ houses. The same happened with household property, including the clothes Jews had to remove at the pits before they were murdered. Money and jewellery not taken by the Germans or by those in charge was extorted by townsfolk or rural people.

It was common for Jews to entrust their property to Lithuanian friends or neighbors, “until after the war.” The mass slaughter meant that most often, this property was never reclaimed. In some cases Lithuanians later betrayed Jews who tried to recover their property.

On the other side, there were Lithuanians who were honest, and who risked their own lives and the lives of their family members to help Jews. Today we salute, honour, and thank them. Moreover, it is important to recognize that contemporary Lithuanians are not guilty of the crimes of earlier generations.

Yet the current Lithuanian government, unlike the German government, is reluctant to take full responsibility for genocide committed on its territory. Indeed, some of the perpetrators have been honoured as heroes for resisting the Soviet occupation. They have commemorative plaques and streets named after them. None of these “heroes” were prosecuted when alive.

The extent of participation in the genocide of Jews and collaboration with Nazis is still downplayed in Lithuania and the current Lithuanian government is seeking to legislate their responsibility away.

We hope that this attitude and honouring of criminals will change.

Edits getting deleted

Hi, I'm trying to update historical information for a university and I'm including citations, but it keeps getting deleted. What do I need to do to ensure that it is approved? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.197.103.246 (talk) 00:27, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The edit summary for one of the reversions (by ElKevbo) reads "(rv copyvios (https://www.csusm.edu/pdc/campus-master-plan/campus_history.html))". "Copyvio" is shorthand for "copyright violation". It seems that you copied material from csusm.edu, material that the university neither explicitly released under a copyleft license acceptable here nor to which it explicitly waived copyright. But copyright matters aside, what we want is not what an institution says about itself but instead what independent (but reliable) sources say about the institution. -- Hoary (talk) 00:36, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the ping, Hoary. You're exactly right. The primary reason I removed that material was because it appears to have been copied directly from the university's website. Wikipedia is not only the encyclopedia that anyone can edit it's also the encyclopedia that anyone can copy and reuse. That means that we can only accept edits that editors freely create and contribute to the encyclopedia under our licensing terms (that permit further copy and reuse by anyone) or that are already freely available for use and reuse by anyone. Most materials that are available on websites are not freely available for use and reuse; they're copyrighted by default.
The second issue that you raise - what we want to include in articles - is a more complicated issue. Editors have created some advice about article contents specific to articles about colleges and universities that might be helpful. ElKevbo (talk) 01:17, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Edit of Northwestern Mutual Company Shows

So I saw that there was a list of shows that NM puts on each year. In 2019 Jimmy Buffett played for Annual Meeting, as I am an NM employee, I was there. I added it to the list and then got a note saying "I wanted to let you know that I reverted one of your recent contributions—specifically this edit to Northwestern Mutual—because it did not appear constructive." from Fuzheado. I figured since it was shared up there on the page, it should have been kept.

Creating a super-category

I would like to expande on Category:Anti-natalists as such:

May I do this? If yes, I'm not certain how to go about all this, specially the sub-categorizations.

Do I just go ahead and create Categories Childless and Childfree ? Would Category:Childless be considered over-categorizing?--Cy21discuss 12:12, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Political slant.

Although I have donated to Wikipedia in the past, I will no longer do so. Articles about certain people are written by others with a political slant. One's opponent (or opponent party) should never be allowed to write and submit as "factual" an article describing that person. For example, I read the article/biography of Marjory Taylor Green, and found it cast a very negative and NOT factual description of her and her beliefs. Sorry, unless you can find a way to be sure articles about people are neutral, I will no longer support you. (And yes, I attempted to edit the article but it would not let me). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marjorie_Taylor_Greene — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.95.96.16 (talk) 15:32, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia article summarize what independent reliable sources state, not "factual descriptions of her and her beliefs". If you don't like what independent reliable sources say about Rep. Greene, you will need to take that up with them. Donating or withholding donations has no impact on Wikipedia content, as if it did, this would cease to be a neutral encyclopedia. Wikipedia, however, does not claim to be free of bias. Any bias in sources will be reflected in Wikipedia; those sources are presented so you can judge the sources for yourself as to bias. 331dot (talk) 15:48, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I would strongly suggest finding a different topic area to edit in. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Takes a strong man to deny... 18:45, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Looks pretty factual to me. If you have "alternative facts" you can discuss them at the article's talk page, but take note of Bori's warning. Be prepared to back your arguments with real evidence (you know evidence, the kind of thing that was lacking for claims of pizzagate, stop the steal, jewish space lasers, etc.?). "I attempted to edit the article but it would not let me" = page protection is working as intended. Speaking as someone who has had requests declined at RFPP, it’s not something we do willy-nilly, even in topic areas with discretionary sanctions.
Im not a fan of saying "Soandso is a plumber and a conspiracy theorist" as if the latter was a job rather than a mindset. But on the other hand, some people seem to be making money (not just increased notoriety) by promoting certain views, so maybe it can be part of one's job? And we do say somebody is "a Wikipedian" even though for most of us that’s a hobby not employment. (If it’s a difference between saying that someone is "a conspiracy theorist" versus "has become famous for promoting conspiracy theories", does it matter?)

Articles without talk pages

Is there a way to find a list of articles without talk pages? This would be useful, for instance, to find pages that need to be tagged with relevant WikiProjects. It seems as though there's probably a way to do this, but I can't figure out what it is. Thanks! Extraordinary Writ (talk) 17:59, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

AFAIK the only option is to go through Special:AllPages, load everyone up, and check if the talkpage link is blue. The proccess might be a bit faster if you use the API, sicne you can query 500 at a time. If it shall be a bit faster, and you are only interested in new pages, You can try Special:NewPages with the same brute-force-method (there is no API call for this). Maybe some of the database experts here can also create a database query (If there is a method - I don't know). Victor Schmidt (talk) 18:09, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Extraordinary Writ: There is in fact a way to create a database query for this: see this one. If you fork the query, you can adjust the LIMIT to display a different number of pages, and you can filter to certain categories by using a query like this one (filtering to unsourced articles). Vahurzpu (talk) 19:16, 3 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Extraordinary Writ: You could use WP:AWB to find a list of all the pages in a category, convert the list to Talk pages, and preparse the list to skip pages that exist. Then you could go through the remaining list of non existent talk pages and append the appropriate WikiProject banner(s). GoingBatty (talk) 02:01, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to all for their suggestions. It looks like there's no easy solution, although the AWB route might be workable. By applying effort, time, scepticism, and experience. Beyond that, it would depend on the particular subject. For many articles, it's clear that the author has (authors have) a far better understanding of mathematics, physics, biology, law, etc than I have. For many, it's clear that they are able to read text in languages that I cannot. -- Hoary (talk) 06:14, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The ability to recognize and investigate the URLs of obviously reliable sources and ignore the URLs of unreliable sources is an important skill, as is the ability to assess the reliability of sources that are borderline at first glance. Also important is the skill to add terms to a search to narrow things down. For example, when researching a sculptor who has a fairly common name, you need to add terms relating to sculpture, art, statues and museums; and if there is a well known brain surgeon with same name, add negative search terms relating to surgery, medicine, hospitals, the brain and so on. A Google Books search will sometimes reveal tiny snippets that are of little direct use, but may yield a nugget like the name of a major art museum that might have lots of new information about the sculptor. When I am actively researching an article topic, I may try dozens of different Google search inquiries, and if I am really interested, I will start ordering books online. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:51, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Kurigo: most articles are started modestly by a single editor and then grow as other editors add to them. As you have noted, some articles are created and expanded primarily by a single editor. You can see the difference by checking the articles history (the "view history" tab). Unless the original editor did the preliminary work offline, you can get a feeling for how the editor worked by looking at the history. I have written a few articles "from scratch" based solely on web searches for reliable sources when I become interested in a topic. I simply keep adding information from all of the sources until the article is adequate. Much more often, I get interested in a subject and find that we already have an article, so I just expand it as needed when I find additional well-sourced information. There is no reason you cannot build an acceptable article yourself. If you do not have experience in writing encyclopedia-style articles, I suggest that you look at the structure of some of our articles on similar subjects to the one you wish to create as a guide to how your article should be structured. -Arch dude (talk) 06:54, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

HoustonCon

Hi! I made edits on the Houstoncon wiki page ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houstoncon ) fixing the misnamed 'Ed Blair, Jr' to the correct name of 'Earl Blair, Jr', and some robot named Andrea or something told me that wasn't constructive, and reverted it back to the wrong name. I'm Earl Blair's SON. His name is EARL, not 'Ed'. So please, fix it, othrwise I'll know for a fact that Wikipedia is unreliable information. Electric battery

I found some silly error in this article , Kindly Improve that.

A battery is a device consisting of one or more electrochemical cells with external connections[1] for powering electrical devices such as flashlights, mobile phones, and electric cars. When a battery is supplying electric power, its positive terminal is the cathode and its negative terminal is the anode.

Battery Positive Terminal is called Anode. Battery Negative Terminal is Called Cathode. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.228.174.105 (talk) 08:55, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The article is correct. The cathode is negative when talking about an electron tube or electrolytic cell, but positive when talking about a voltaic cell or battery. If you wish to discuss this further or have reliable evidence to the contrary, the place to discuss it is on the article talk page.--Shantavira|feed me 09:57, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question about tables

Hey all, I was wondering what the guideline is for the chronological order of items in tables. I couldn't find the answer in the Help section, only that an example given was from earliest to latest: Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Tables#Multi-column_sortable_standard. In most tables I've encountered it goes from earliest to latest. As in List of epidemics, List of Chinese films of 2018, List of films based on actual events, List of natural disasters by death toll. But then when I got here: List of mass shootings in the United States and World_population#Annual_population_growth it's from latest to earliest. Why? Is there a reason for this? Hanold claqueyu. You appear to be trying to write an article about yourself, on your user page. A User page is the wrong place to do that, but writing about yourself is strongly discouraged. If Wikipedia at some time has an article about you, it will not belong to you, you will not have control of its contents, and little or none of its contents will be based on what you say or want to say: almost the whole must be based on what people who have no connection with you have chosen to publish about you (so your Facebook page is not acceptable as a source). Please read the link above, and find another outlet to publicise yourself, not Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 16:54, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

thanks Humaira Begum — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.69.141.217 (talk) 16:14, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Before doing all that, you should see if the company meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines for corporations. The sources you use should be independent, secondary, reliable, and provide significant coverage of the subject. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:36, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Don't forget that you also have to disclose that you have a conflict of interest with the company on your user page if necessary. Make sure you write with a neutral point of view and not use Wikipedia as an advertising space. Félix An (talk) 17:11, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Just to clear something up, Humaira Begum, your wording is ambiguous: if you mean that the Wikipedia article has not been created yet, then my esteemed colleagues' advice above applies. If however you mean that the company has not been created yet (which is what your wording literally means), then you should absolutely NOT try to create a Wikipedia article about it. This would be pure commercial promotion, which is strictly forbidden on Wikiledia (see WP:PROMO), and an extreme case of WP:TOOSOON. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.200.40.9 (talk) 09:36, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In case you wish to use other images from Commons which are not public domain, you basically just need to follow the principles laid out at "the Commons help page"., which for things mostly held under a CC-BY-SA licence just means that you should cite Wikimedia if you put the image into any place others can see it (and specify that the "Same Again" licence condition applies). Note that on the Commons page for the image there are (at the top) icons that provide links to download the file or use it on a webpage. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:21, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

IGrafx, a few things.
• Please change your username, as Wikipedia doesn't allow corporate names or names that imply shared use.
• The article had been deleted for unambiguous promotion before being refunded to userspace. It was moved to AfC, where it was deleted for inactivity.
• Even if the page were to be recovered, you would be strongly discouraged from directly editing the article, as you have a paid relationship with the subject. In such an event, the best thing to do would be to leave edit requests on the article's talk page. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 22:24, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, iGrafx, it's probably mostly because it was created by somebody who worked for the company that it got deleted: it is hard to write neutrally about the organisation you work for. Bear in mind that Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. . --ColinFine (talk) 22:29, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting - but not sure how anyone outside the company could give the history of the company's founding. iGrafx is just looking for a simple page similar to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signavio & https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promapp - These pages were also written by employees of the company. iGrafx is also referenced in multiple articles on Wikipedia that orginally linked back to the company bio. Thank you both for the information — Preceding unsigned comment added by IGrafx (talkcontribs) 22:50, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

IGrafx, WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. Wikipedia is concerned that subjects are notable; corporations have a more specialised set. This is done by what independent reliable sources have reported on them. The encyclopedia is just that: an encyclopedia; it is not a place for company profiles. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:05, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
iGrafx (ec) Please see other stuff exists. As this is a volunteer project where people do what they can when they can, it is possible for inappropriate articles to go undetected, even for years. We can only address what we know about. The two articles you cite are themselves problematic.
If no one outside the company can tell about its history, it would not merit a Wikipedia article at this time. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state about companies that meet Wikipedia's special definition of a notable company. Wikipedia has no interest in what a company wants to say about itself. You are free to tell about what your company considers to be its history on your own website. 331dot (talk) 23:08, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How does Wikipedia display captions for audio files?

So I want to display captions for an audio file (you know how certain audio files will display lyrics when you play them?) but since have not found a detailed explanation as to how to achieve this, since all of the tutorials are for videos, and not just regular audio files (like ogg, which is the format i plan to use) I know how to create srt files, I just don't know how Wikipedia displays the captions for audio files. So what's the method that Wikipedia uses to add and display these subtitles? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheodoresTomfooleries (talkcontribs) 21:53, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No, unfortunately not. The article in question doesn't give much information on how it works. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheodoresTomfooleries (talkcontribs) 23:12, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TheodoresTomfooleries: See commons:Commons:Timed Text. It should work automatically when the srt file has been created with the right name. For example, commons:File:Jfk berlin address high.ogg has commons:TimedText:Jfk berlin address high.ogg.en.srt. Simply writing produces:

We prefer listen to be used but it doesn't do anything to add the captions. produces:
PrimeHunter (talk) 23:47, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I think I got it! Creating a page for the respective srt file with the matching file name and format will display the captions for the OGG file?
So if I were to upload a file like and then create a corresponding page called TimedText:random_audio_example.ogg.en.srt, I would see the corresponding subtitles? I think I understand now! — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheodoresTomfooleries (talkcontribs) 01:51, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@TheodoresTomfooleries: Yes. The OGG file will have a "TimedText" tab to automatically make the right name. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:21, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No. None of these sources show the day is notable, and we only include notable holidays on such pages. AdmiralEek (talk) 15:00, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

image adding

how do i add images? I tried to copy the link address of an image but it messed up the BR class 319 page and someone had to fix it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seansrobloxvideosandmore (talkcontribs) 13:52, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Seansrobloxvideosandmore: You should upload the image to Wikimedia Commons, then add the file name to the image paramater on the article. But you should only upload images that are accompanied with a free license that allows you to use the image for any purpose. Most images found on the internet have no such license, and so are assumed to be copyrighted and should not be uploaded. SK2242 (talk) 14:16, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In reference 2, in the second paragraph under Biography, you have to click on his photo to see the information about him. I want to include a note to that effect in the reference. I'm pretty sure that can be done, but I forget how to do it. Who can help? Lou Sander (talk) 18:03, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Write any text you'd like to write between the closing }} of the cite web template and the </ref> tag.

Worked like a charm. Thank you! Lou Sander (talk) 21:19, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Gallery parameters

Can you help me insert the titles in all the gallery pics so that they are flush left? The parameters that are there now are: <gallery widths="140px" heights="140px" perrow="4"> --there is nothing specifying the title is flush left.

This is not a problem in online views, but when PDF'd or printed, it looks off because the titles are justified and spread out in a weird way.

Also, the same weird view problem with the caption under the artist's picture. It looks okay online but when printed or PDF'd, the title breaks and is centered. Can I make that flush left, or, alternatively, put the photographer information in parenthesis on a second line?

Thank you for you help.

Fa

I recently was flagged by Drmies, apparently multiple times, for bad information links. I have not edited any articles since my class a year ago so I do not understand why I would be listed as making these erroneous errors of linkage. I f I linked an article that has since been pulled (?) I apologize but since all my edits were for a class learning experience and none have been done in over eight months, I am offended to receive such a detrimental email to my character by being told I was "warned about this before" (When?) and I am "still doing it." (No I have not made any edits since a class over eight months ago) "the edits are unacceptable..." "You will be blocked from editing for a period of 31 hours for abusing multiple accounts" I'm glad multiple accounts are allowed but I only have one account and it was NOT used "for illegitimate reasons" but only used for a class. I do not plan to make any edits in the near future but believe there may be a flaw in your system if I am blocked for edits you consider I have consistently made when I have not even been in edit mode on Wikipedia for over eight months and then only for a class. Not a very Welcoming gesture. JL Fenger JL Fenger (talk) 20:46, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

JL Fenger, I don't understand: the message you are citing wasn't placed on your talk page; it was on User talk:Cetko, a user who was making the same kinds of edits and continues to do so. You are not, in fact, blocked, as evidenced by the fact that you posted this; the other user is blocked and might be blocked again. So if you claimed that got an email (I didn't send any emails) that contained a warning addressed to another user, then strange things are afoot. MarnetteD, thank you for placing those links.
