Good article review
[edit]Hi! I saw that you nominated the article on the Creighton Preparatory School for Good Article consideration. I want you to keep in mind that putting an article through the Good Article process can take a long time, sometimes even months to be completed and it's expected that you will be monitoring the article if there are any concerns that need to be addressed, even if the class is over. I can't review it, as I'm involved with your class. Here are the things they will be looking at, based on their assessment template:
- It is reasonably well written. Spelling, prose, and grammar are correct and it follows Wikipedia's style guidelines. There is no copyright issues or plagiarism.
- It is factually accurate and verifiable. The article is sourced with reliable sources that establish notability and also explicitly back up the claims.
- It is broad in its coverage. All of the major aspects are covered. They also look at the general size to make sure that it's not undercovered or has too much indiscriminate information.
- It follows the neutral point of view policy. There's no bias in the article.
- It's stable, without any edit wars. There is no edit warring currently going on or people going back and forth between versions.
- It is illustrated by images and other media, where possible and appropriate. This is optional.
Offhand here are my notes for the article:
- The article needs to be checked for grammar. There's some use of the term "we" in the article, which should be avoided since Wikipedia is not meant to be written from the point of view of the school and per this guideline on second person pronouns, should be written in third person. This is especially important as second person pronouns can make an article seem too casual or even promotional. Make sure that there is no promotional language in the article.
- I am somewhat concerned about the amount of detail in the article, as there may be too much focus on the smaller details, making them indiscriminate data.
- Be extremely careful with the controversy section. Controversies should only be included if there is enough coverage to justify mentioning it. For example, I'm not sure that the Chris Nizzi situation has enough coverage.
- The alumni section needs sourcing.
- A lot of the sourcing is primary, so the reviewer will likely ask for more non-primary sources. The sourcing also needs to be fixed so that it has all of the necessary information for each source.
They may have more suggestions that are more nitpicky, which is why I wanted to caution you, as this can be a fairly labor intensive process. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:53, 10 April 2019 (UTC)
- Hi! I saw that you removed the GA tag - I hope I didn't scare you off of it! I just wanted to give you an idea of the process. I'd definitely be willing to work with you on the process if you still wanted to do it. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:09, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
Anarchism
[edit]Hi Etriusus,
I saw your work on articles related to anarchism and wanted to say hello, as I work in the topic area too. If you haven't already, you might want to watch our noticeboard for Wikipedia's coverage of anarchism, which is a great place to ask questions, collaborate, discuss style/structure precedent, and stay informed about content related to anarchism. Take a look for yourself!
And if you're looking for other juicy places to edit, consider expanding a stub, adopting a cleanup category, or participating in one of our current formal discussions.
Feel free to say hi on my talk page and let me know if these links were helpful (or at least interesting). Hope to see you around. czar 10:31, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Czar,
I'm going to add a large amount of info to The Anarchist Cookbook page, you can see my planned edits on the front of my page. I would appreciate it if you could repair the links once I take the edits live, I've been having issue with that and I'll try to fix it prior to uploading but I'm uncertain if it'll work. Etriusus (talk) 18:08, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
- Cool. I fixed a few but let me know if you need a hand with anything else. By the way, I recommend using reliable, secondary sources for the content summary instead of the book itself (primary source) whenever possible. czar 02:04, 30 April 2019 (UTC)
Circular references
[edit]Thanks for contributing to the article Creighton Preparatory School . However, one of Wikipedia's core policies is that material must be verifiable and attributed to reliable sources. You have recently used citations which copied, or mirrored, material from Wikipedia. This leads to a circular reference and is not acceptable. Most mirrors are clearly labeled as such, but some are in violation of our license and do not provide the correct attribution. Please help by adding alternate sources to the article you edited! If you need any help or clarification, you can look at Help:Contents/Editing Wikipedia or ask at Wikipedia:New contributors' help page, or just ask me. Thank you. Project classification
[edit]Hi! Some of your recent edits removed the WP Anarchism template from a number of talk pages clearly within scope, e.g., [1][2]. The template should be restored if you can revisit/revert those edits. In the case of my two examples, there is no defining connection to "philosophy" and as such those banners should be removed (not the "anarchism" one). The banner overlap is an artifact of unfinished work when the anarchism project split from the philosophy project. When eventually complete, the anarchism parameter will be phased out of the philosophy banner. Also, if helpful for the future, the WP:RATER tool makes this sort of classification much easier. czar 06:17, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
- I see, I will restore the banners ASAP. It looks like when the new format moved over, many of the templates were left blank. This makes them show up twice since they are listed under 2 separate article classes. It is not a pressing concern but something that I'll clean up for organizational purposes. [edit]Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia
[edit]Dear fellow editor,
I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.
All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.
Please note that by filling out this questionnaire, you consent to participate in this research. The survey is anonymous and all personal details relevant to your experience will be kept private and will not be transferred to any third party.
I appreciate your support of this research and thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and share your experiences! Hi, would you mind doing a quick check of this article? Your edit to expand it last month added a couple unusual typos (like a period in the middle of a sentence) that look like they probably happened as you moved things around while revising what you'd written, and I just want to make sure that's not a sign of some error or something missing before I remove them. There's one sentence in particular that's gotten mangled in a way that I can easily see a fix for but might be indicative of a whole sentence that went missing while you were moving things around: Sail Mohamed was also a passionate anti-Stalinist, and rejecting support from the Red Aid in 1932 following his arrest., a front organisation of the French Communist Party.
Thanks for expanding this article, btw! -- asilvering (talk) 20:09, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Asilvering: Go ahead and CE. I generally edit towards the later hours of the night so I'm not surprised the page needs a touch-up. I'm currently working on CLODO but plan to take Sail Mohamed to GA eventually. If you're considering taking this to GA, I'd be happy to help and do a co-nom. Etriusus 03:58, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- No plans! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to be ironing out a symptom of a larger problem than just a grammar error, like if you'd copy-pasted from a draft and accidentally overwritten part of the paragraph or something. It's hard to notice something like that has happened if someone else comes by and "fixes" things. I've done a CE pass on it now. -- asilvering (talk) 05:03, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Well I edited list of child prodigies and added Srinivas Ramanujan to it because I read it on a page specifically dedicated to [[Srinivas Ramanujan Early life]]. So I kindly request you to read that page and revert your page. I am not offending you but just requesting you. Thank you.
- @GoodHelper111:, I moved this conversation to its own section, please use the 'new section' function when starting a talk page discussion. Additionally, you can reply directly below my comment by using 2 colons and a 'user ping' (just copy the line of code I put in and change the name if you are unsure what that is). Lastly, please sign your posts, it took me a few minutes to figure out where this came from. The reason that edit was reversed is per WP:REF, all sources need to be cited by secondary, reliable sources. I don't doubt that Srinivas Ramanujan is likely a child prodigy, it was a good-faith edit. That being said, that page was protected due to prior people vandalizing it. If you wish to re-add Srinivas Ramanujan, please discuss it in Talk:List of child prodigies and cite a reliable, secondary source. I can see from your edit history you're a newer editor. Just noting that you don't bare responsibility for the copyright violation, which looks like it is existed in the article you translated it from, which you couldn't have known about. Moneytrees🏝️(Talk) 20:02, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
- @Moneytrees: I appreciate the sentiment, truly. I was rather taken aback when I saw the warning but I'm more thankful that Tol caught it and it was quickly resolved. Also thank you and Tol for reviewing the page Delina Fico, it was remarkably timely by Wikipedia standards (jk jk). Tol and I discussed the issue briefly here: User talk:Tol.
- This copy-vio/poor citations issue seems to be a reoccuring theme with [This user] on the Albanian Wikipedia. I was preparing to translate [Sevim Arbana] but then I noticed the rather questionable citations and obvious copy-vios, also done by the same user. I still plan on translating it, but will likely have to start from scratch. I am frankly unsure if this is outside our jurisdiction but perhaps a message to the Albanian Admin team is in order. Cheers, Etriusus 20:22, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
- Dealing with copyright violations on articles in other languages is immensely annoying for obvious reasons... I'm not sure what the Albanian equivalent of our Template:copypaste is, so I added a bunch of spaces and noted a copyright violation in an an edit summary. Reference requirement?
[edit]Hi. Thank you for the welcome. I'm confused by the requirement for sources. Many of the various other sources for references in movies, TV shows, and video games don't have references, so I'm just confused why this is needed for this particular case, as most of these mentions are years old. Is this a new requirement? MalamuteBoy (talk) 19:12, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
- @MalamuteBoy: First and foremost, welcome to Wikipedia!! The fact you reached out to me tells me that you really do aim to help improve wikipedia and if you ever need any help with other projects/issues, feel free to use the ping template and reach out to me. 😊
- So the edit in question (here on the Party All the Time page) was reverted because there was no reliable, secondary source provided. The edit, because you're a new account who was editing a Protected Page, ended up in the Pending Changes Log and I was the one who reviewed the edit. Since this edit ended up in the pending changes log, it unfortunately falls under a lot more scrutiny then general edits (see Wikipedia:Pending changes policy for more details).
- Ideally, every line should be cited in Wikipedia. There are specific examples where the information is implicitly cited (like movie and video game synopse) but everything ideally should be cited. Some stuff obviously falls through the cracks (WP:PERFECTION); I can see a sentence on Party All the Time that lacks a citation and should realistically be cited. The page is a Stub, so it has a long way to go till it's WP:GA quality. Your edit is likely factually accurate but there was no citation. This is always been policy, albeit Wikipedia is 6.5 million articles and not every page can be reviewed in depth. Do you mind linking me a few of these examples?
- As a general guideline, overcite, don't undercite. Its a good habit to get into here on wikipedia. If you want a tutorial, try The Wikipedia Adventure or maybe consider Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user. Hopefully this clarifies some stuff.
- Cheers, Etriusus (Talk) 16:45, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- Ah, ok. Thank you for the clarification. I was just confused. Definitely want to help. One of the examples I was looking at when I originally posted was I Don't Care Anymore, specifically the "In Popular Culture" section. A few other examples are Get Down Saturday Night, Turn Up the Radio (Autograph song); Obsession (Animotion song) and in general, pages of music. Honestly, I was originally just looking at various pages of music and was wanting to help organize things a little. Which actually leads me to a question - Is there a preference to how to name the section for references? I see some sections as "In Popular Culture", "In Other Media", and "Other Uses" so I'm also just curious if there's a preference. Ultimately, it all means the same thing, but sometimes a little uniformity is nice..at least, in my eyes. I will review the references pages, though. Thank you for the advice and links. Lots to learn. MalamuteBoy (talk) 02:28, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- @MalamuteBoy: Normally, there is some discretion that users have on header titles (see MOS:AT). There really isn't any specific header that must be used, unless Wikipedia:WikiProject Songs has guidelines I am unaware of. I see no issue with standardizing, but that is going to be a very long process to comb through all our articles. A cursory glance at those pages tells me that they need citations, consider placing a maintenance template or citing them yourself (Wikipedia:Citation needed). Etriusus (Talk) 17:34, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- Why does Wikipedia cite sources which cost money to read (such as paperback books)? I thought Wikipedia was free?
- Where is the scientific evidence on Wikipedia? There seems to be a lot of information from people printed verbatim without any scientific evidence to back it up with. Example: soandso went to france in 1970 (source: soandso) and soandso was born in 1970 (source: soandso).
- Isn't Wikipedia just a news aggregator (copycat) therefore if the news is fake then so is Wikipedia? 79.116.111.185 (talk) 09:14, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

[edit]what is difference between British or English !? A.SAFARIAN (talk) 17:16, 7 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Abtin336: Are you referring to the reverted edit on William Blake? Please take it up on the talk page. The page uses "English" fairly consistently and changing it only 2 times just confuses the article. Please give edit summaries in English, not Persian. Also, when pinging users, please give context for the question, I had to dig a bunch to find what you were referring to. If Persian is your first language, please consider the Persian Wikipedia. List of impostors pending changes revert
[edit]Your reversion of pending changes is attributed in edit summary as WP:Overcite, which relates to the Warren entry; I concur with this. However, that accounts for two of the three reverted edits; the other one dealt with other unrelated content and is not explained by the revert reason, so I thought I'd ask you to double check whether you actually intended to revert that as well or if it was collateral damage. - @Bloom6132: You were given 5 days to rectify a quick-fail criteria. Quick-fails rarely receive a 7-day window and I was more than generous in giving 5 days to complete a simple page revert and lead expansion. Most quick-fails don't make it past 1-2 days. Per policy:
An article can, but by no means must, be failed without further review (known as a quick fail) if, prior to the review:
5. A reviewer who has not previously reviewed the article determines that any issues from previous GA nominations have not been adequately considered
- Judging from your contributions you had plenty of time. Had it been communicated that more time was needed or further clarification was needed, I would have gladly given it. Implying I intentionally went out of my way to not give you a fair shake is deeply inappropriate (see above comment and [3]).
- Failing an article is not meant as a personal attack. Implying I intentionally gave a subpar review is. Etrius ( Us) 23:22, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

Reverse copying
[edit]Re Talk:Paul Dini/GA1: That report looks for all the world to me like goodreads took an old version of our article, rather than the other way around. Earwig won't tell you that, only that the two copies are similar. In some cases you can get a better idea of the chronology of other web pages from archive.org but in this case it doesn't have any useful information. Note that the goodreads incorporates some old "cryptozoologist" text, added in [4] in 2005 by long-gone editor Orville Eastland, but also incorporates the lead text of the article in the version prior to Orville Eastland's additions. Unless you are going to argue that there was a conspiracy among multiple old Wikipedia editors to gradually make the Wikipedia article more and more a copyvio of the same goodreads page, the simpler explanation is that goodreads copied from Wikipedia.
So while I won't quibble with your quickfailing the article over a drive-by and non-responsive editor, I think quickfailing it as a copyvio is a serious mistake. —David Eppstein (talk) 22:29, 27 November 2022 (UTC)

Paul Dini
[edit]Hello, I was in the process of rewriting the copyright portions of the article and was also pretty busy the past couple of days. Sorry that I didn't communicate this clearly. Could I still have a reasonable amount of time to complete the rewrite?
And I suspect the Goodreads page may have copied content that was originally from Wikipedia, because it is structured like a Wikipedia article. I can still rewrite these parts if need be. FlairTale (talk) 13:06, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
- @FlairTale What you can do is place a new GA nomination template on the talk page. It was my mistake in not recognizing the reverse-copying (someone copy and pasted the Wikipedia page). This is not a copy-vio and you don't need to rewrite anything. Once the template has been placed, I can pick this review back up and continue from where I left off. Sorry for the confusion. Good Article Nominations
[edit]Thanks for helping out with the Twin Falls hoax! If you want a bigger challenge, Roswell incident is also a Good Article Nominee. Rhodes UFO photographs also needs GA feedback -- a reviewer rejected the article's topic as too fringe to ever become a "Good Article", which is fine, but it could still become a "Better Article". Feoffer (talk) 01:00, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Feoffer I skimmed Rhodes UFO photographs and its GA review. It is not GAR's place to determine if the page is viable as a stand-alone article (Here). That's a job for WP:AFD. I don't necessarily disagree with @ජපස:'s review, in fact I quite like their merge proposal, I am just curious on why they didn't initiate an AFD. I've pinged them to ask for clarification. Etrius ( Us) 04:29, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
- To be frank, I'm not 100% convinced that I'm right in my evaluation. I take things to AfD when I'm certain. However, I struggle to see how this can be a good article simply because it is hard to properly contextualize. It would be rather like (to stretch an analogy somewhat) someone writing an article about a magic trick that had no explanation for how it was performed because it was too obscure. jps (talk) 20:59, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
- @ජපස I see what you mean. reviewing the sources does raise similar concerns regarding WP:NOTE. I tend to err on the side of caution, if it is conceivable that a topic, even if obscure, could have a decent article written I like to keep it. Some of out best articles, and many of my own GAs are obscure topics. I will assume that photographs would probably fall under a similar criteria as WP:ARTIST, since WP:PHOTO doesn't yet exist. My bigger concern is if William Albert Rhodes can be a standalone page. I strongly believe that both pages would be more viable long term if they were merged. My advice: WP:BEBOLD, AFD the page or start a merge proposal. I'd gladly support, and even help, merge them. @Feoffer What are your thoughs? Etrius ( Us) 21:25, 30 November 2022 (UTC)
- I'm very sympathetic to jps's point -- until we can fullly explain how the trick was performed, can this ever be an article we would go out of our way to recommend to readers? Perhaps not, but we can still aim to improve the article. The initial suggestion was to redirect this article to the Biography -- but the photos truly are very, very notable historic [hoax] photos that still show up on news broadcasts 75 years later.
- You raise a novel concern that has merit -- the bio may not be strong enough for a standalone. The photographs are orders of magnitude more notable than their creator -- maybe we should merge the bio material into the photographs article. Feoffer (talk) 02:12, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

GA proposal closing
[edit]Hi Etriusus, can I suggest using atop and abot templates instead of collapse top and collapse bot? This is more common for conversations where the result is meant to be referred to, as it leaves all the discussion visible without the need for more clicks. Best, CMD (talk) 16:40, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
- @Chipmunkdavis, I was aiming to cut down the page length a bit for readability's sake, its 200k bytes and growing!!! Ultimatly, I'm not really married to either template style so I'll take the advice and revert back to the atop, abot templates. Thx. 🏵️Etrius ( Us) 16:47, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

Picking on you
[edit]Hey, I saw that you were sorry to decline a GA nom, so I had a look at the review. I agree with the overall result, but a few things stood out to me, and I think you should consider my free and unsolicited advice (guaranteed to be worth at least twice what you've paid for it! ;-) ). Here are some of the things you wrote:
- Add a short description.
- This could use an infobox
- image layout could use some work. Consider a gallery template
- FNs 1 and 7 are duplicates, just condense the notes in the citation
- Per MOS:LEADCITE you should move the citations/new info from the lead to the body of the article. You only cite in the lead if there is a fact or claim that may be contentious or divisive.
All except the last have the same problem: They're not in the WP:GACR. GA explicitly does not care about ref formatting (I wrote footnote #3 myself), and the rest is not mentioned. Suggesting things that aren't required makes noms feel like they really ought to do them, either because they don't know what the criteria say and trust you to tell them what the GA-related problems are, or just because they really want to keep you happy. IMO reviewers shouldn't suggest things that aren't required, and if you do, it needs to be carefully labeled, maybe by saying something like "This is not required and will not affect the outcome of this review, but if you feel like it, you could...". It's also perfectly appropriate to simply not mention off-topic things, and focus on the problems with the sources used (and not used, in this case) and prose (good job on that point).
The last item in my list has a different problem: What you wrote is not actually, technically true. You have described the most popular choice, but you have accidentally presented it as the required approach. Editors are allowed to provide citations straight in the lead of the article, even for non-contentious facts. It, like whether to have an infobox, is basically a personal stylistic preference. MOS:LEADCITE says "The presence of citations in the introduction is neither required in every article nor prohibited in any article" (emphasis mine). That includes articles that don't have contentious or divisive information in the lead.
Finally, I suggest to you that the hands-off approach to reviewing is not necessarily the best model. I've seen reviewers spend a lot of time copying and pasting simple typos on to the review page to ask the nom to correct it. Whenever there is only one possible correct fix and it would be faster for you to just fix it than to request that someone else fix it, I suggest that you WP:SOFIXIT. Fixing a few minor problems has traditionally not been considered a barrier to completing a review, and it can make it easier to keep the review focused on the bigger issues.
I add: Thank you. Thank you for being here, for editing, and especially for reviewing articles. I know I'm dumping a big, long complaint on your page, but really: overall you're doing fine, and I think you've got lots of potential for doing even better. WhatamIdoing (talk) 07:31, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
- @WhatamIdoing AHHHH, I'm being picked on ;_:
- Thanks for the advice, I'll always take it. Can you please specify which review it is, I generally say that adding infoboxes is optional, I must have slipped up. I'm going to take a stab at it and say its Lindley Hall Farm since I was talking about it at Wikipedia:Good Article proposal drive 2023, and it seems in line with your recommendations. I felt bad about that review because everything was there to make it a GA, but the nominator was a new user who didn't quite get how WP:GA worked. I offered to help but alas, nothing came of it. One day I'll probably do it myself, just gotta get past the Proposal Drive since I've become a de facto coordinator.
- I quite like your idea of labeling more optional edits, I'll do that from now on. Thanks again, I'll never get upset at free advice. 🏵️Etrius ( Us) 13:40, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, that's the article. I saw your mention of it there, and I was curious.
- Thinking long-term, from the POV of a coordinator, the idea of GA being a pre-FAC has been a problem as long as I know. It's hard to keep it as its own thing. There is an old saying about bureaucrats that says they mistake activity for results. I think we see this in feeling like a long list of nitpicks is proof that it was a good review, and a short list of important problems is a lazy review. I don't know if those two areas of concern resonate with your experience. What other challenges do you see? WhatamIdoing (talk) 16:46, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
- @WhatamIdoing, I get that. By the way, I am in no position to be qualified to give an opinion as a 'coordinator', it just sorta happened and honestly I'm just doing my damndest. The current Proposal drive I intended to be mainly quality of life improvements but its taken on a life of its own. I'm not upset by it, a lot of the changes are needed, but it's daunting since I really don't have a ton of experience. I guess that's what they mean by WP:BEBOLD. Whatever the case, I'm at least relatively qualified as a GA reviewer since that's where I mainly reside on Wikipedia these days Even then, 'qualified' is stretching it a bit. I've only been here for 3 years and I honestly have a lot more to learn.
- I know that WP:GA, even my own reviews, can degrade into nitpicks. It's really a mixed bag for nominators, some love the peer review aspect, some don't. I've found that there is a happy medium that satisfies the onlookers without sacrificing quality. Is the nitpicking issue a symptom of a greater culture at Wikipedia, 100%. I've never seen a quickpass at GA, since it is widely accepted that even if an article is at GA criteria there is always room to improve it. I agree that GA shouldn't be pre-FAC.
- I could regale you with the issues at GA till the heat death of the universe. The backlog, the lack of incentive, the general culture at times, etc. All-in-all, I'm still idealistic. Give it 5k more edits before I become fully cynical. 🏵️Etrius ( Us) 17:16, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
- The problem with "there is always room to improve it" is that a GA review isn't really an article improvement process. It's supposed to be recognition for good work already done. For an article of any significant complexity, there's almost always some bit of unclear prose or some concern about the sources, but I worry that we are making mistakes if we feel like changes always need to be made. A quickpass should be encouraged, if one ever encounters a nominated article that meets the minimum criteria. (I've seen very few, including one article I reviewed years ago, written by an extremely experienced, extremely GA-savvy editor.) Otherwise, we're telling editors out of one side of our mouths that these are the six criteria, and out of the other side of our mouths we're saying "But it's not really enough to meet the criteria; you also have to improve the article during the week after I start reviewing it. So if you somehow managed to meet the criteria before then, I'll just make up some random extra criteria for you". It reminds me of https://dilbert.com/strip/1997-07-12
- (Since you didn't manage to become fully cynical during your second thousand edits, I think it'll take you at least 10K more edits to get there. ;-) WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:03, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

Interested in a chatbot-assisted review?

The idea is that GPT-4 will provide suggestions for criteria 1, 3, and 4, while I'll do 2, 5 and 6.
