Using a DYK suggestion string (see below examples), list new suggestions in the candidate entries section below under the date the article was created or the expansion began (not the date you submit it here), with the newest dates at the top. Any user may nominate a DYK suggestion; self-nominations are permitted and encouraged. Thanks for participating and please remember to check back for comments on your nomination.

DYK criteria

Official criteria: DYK rules
Unofficial criteria: LaPella's unwritten rules
  • DYK evaluation includes:
  • Length - The Article should contain at least 1,500 characters in main body text (ignoring infoboxes, categories, references, lists, and tables). This is a mandatory minimum; in practice, articles having more than 1,500 characters of prose still may be rejected as too short, at the discretion of the selecting administrators.
  • Verification - The DYK hook fact in the article needs an inline cite at the end of the sentence and the article in general should use inline, cited sources.
  • Date - The new article should be no more than five days old and the expanded article should be expanded at least fivefold with new text within the last five days.
  • Length
  • DYK qualifying characters: To count the number of characters in a piece of text, you will need to use a JavaScript extension like User:Dr pda/prosesize.js (instructions on the talk page), a free website like this, or an external software program that has a character-counting feature. For example, if you are using Microsoft Word, select the text from the article page (or, in the case of "Did you know" nominations, this Talk page) – not the edit page containing Wikitext – then copy and paste it into a blank document. Click "Tools" ("Review" in Office 2007), then "Word Count", and note the "Characters (with spaces)" figure. Other word processing programs may have a similar feature. For Mac users, Apple has a Word counter widget available for Mac OS X 10.4 or later. Note: The character counts indicated on "Revision history" pages are not accurate for DYK purposes as they include categories, infoboxes and similar text in articles, and comments and signatures in hooks on this page.
  • Lists: Proposed lists need 1,500+ characters of prose text. The listed items themselves are not counted as part the the 1,500 DYK qualifying characters
  • Verification
  • Suggested facts (the 'hook') should be:
    1. interesting to draw in a variety of readers,
    2. short and concise (fewer than about 200 characters, including spaces),
    3. neutral,
    4. definite facts that are mentioned in the article, and
    5. always cited in the article with an inline citation.
  • Please note that hooks are subject without notice to copyediting as they move to the main page. The nature of the DYK process makes it impractical to consult users over every such edit. In particular, hooks will be shortened if they are deemed too long: the 200-character limit is an outside limit not a recommended length. Also, watch the suggestions page to ensure that no issues have been raised about your hook, because if you do not respond to issues raised your hook may not be featured at all.
  • Articles on living individuals must be carefully checked to ensure that no unsourced or poorly sourced negative material is included. Articles and hooks which focus unduly on negative aspects of living individuals should be avoided.
  • Other issues
  • Pictures: Pictures accompanying the DYK hook should be:
    1. freely licensed suitably and freely (PD, GFDL, CC etc) licensed (NOT fair use) because the main page can only have freely licensed pictures;
    2. suitable, attractive, and interesting at a 100x100px-wide resolution;
    3. already in the article; and
    4. relevant to the article.
  • Sounds: Sounds accompanying the DYK hook should have similar qualities to pictures, and should be formatted using {{DYK Listen|filename.ogg|Brief description}}

Please use one of the strings below to post your DYK nomination, using the "author" and "nominator" fields to identify the users who should receive credit for their contributions if the hook is featured on the main page.

  1. Nom without image: {{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= }}
  2. Nom with image: {{subst:NewDYKnom | article= | hook=... that ? | author= | image= | caption= }}
    To include more than one new or expanded article in a single hook: |article2= |article3= |article4= | (etc)
    To include more than one author: |author2= |author3= | (etc)
    To include alternate hooks: |ALT1= |ALT2= | (etc)
    To add a comment: |comment=
    To add the article you reviewed: |reviewed=

Do not wikilink the article title, or the author username field; the template will wikilink them automatically. Do wikilink the article title in the hook field, however.
Do not add a section heading if you are using the template; the template will add one for you.
Do not include a signature (~~~~) after the template.
Do not use non-free images in your hook suggestion.

  • When saving your suggestion, please add the name of the suggested article to your edit summary.
  • Please check back for comments on your nomination. Responding to reasonable objections will help ensure that your article is listed.
  • If you nominate someone else's article, you can use {{subst:DYKNom}} to notify them. Usage: {{subst:DYKNom|Article name|August 22}} Thanks, ~~~~

Symbols

If you want to confirm that an article is ready to be placed on a later update, or that there is an issue with the article or hook, you may use the following symbols (optional) to point the issues out:

You may notify the nominator of problems with {{subst:DYKproblem|Article|header=yes|sig=yes}}

Please consider using {{subst:DYKproblem}} on the user's talk page, in case they do not notice if there is an issue.

  • Sorry, but the refs you added are not inline citations, so they can't be accepted for DYK. Also, I don't know if Dict.cn, iciba, and similar dictionary websites (like n词酷.com) qualify a reliable sources. But anyway, something like the etymology of 嘿, even though it's something that every Chinese speaker knows, for the purposes of DYK still needs to be cited with an inline footnote to a reliable source. —Politizer talk/contribs 06:01, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Took out "nocturnal"; everything else is verified easily. The "nocturnal" thing led me on a bit of a wild goose chase; ref 7 said that the Aotus monkey was one of the only "New World monkeys" that was nocturnal but not one of the only monkeys in general, and it pointed that "all owl monkeys are at least somewhat nocturnal." Anyway, you're probably right about the nocturnal thing, but it's harder to verify, and besides we might as well bring more attention to the monogamous thing, since that will get more hits (it's got sexxx appeal, yo). —Politizer talk/contribs 04:11, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Everything checks out OK, except:
(1) the article does not say he wrote the book in 1778; it was published in 1778. (I edited the hook accordingly)
(2) the hook fact seems to me to be rather unremarkable. I suggest this spicier variation (the Catholic priest part relies on an offline reference):
*ALT... that the first guidebook to the Lake District, published in 1778, was by Thomas West, a Catholic priest?
--Orlady (talk) 02:55, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's a bit awkward, so let me jump into the mix:
ALT2: ... that the first guidebook to England's Lake District was written in 1778 by the Catholic priest Thomas West? —Politizer talk/contribs 03:23, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I assume you didn't intend for "written published" to be stuck together like that, but I'm not sure what you intended there. I didn't want the hook to say he published it, because the article doesn't indicate that he published it himself. --Orlady (talk) 03:46, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops. That was supposed to be "written." Thanks for catching it. —Politizer talk/contribs 04:01, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I realise that you've added the 'in England' bit for geographical exactitude but it slightly alters the meaning of the hook, as it implies that the guidebook was merely the first to be written 'in England' about the Lakes. The Lakes are well known in the UK, and international readership can click on the Lake District article to find out where it is. If you're determined to have it though, perhaps 'English Lake District' would be better. Benea (talk) 13:55, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Benea regarding "in England." Either delete those words (I don't think they are necessary) or make it "English Lake District." --Orlady (talk) 13:59, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll make it "English Lake District," then. We should never require readers to click on a link when we can avoid it...I don't remember exactly which policy page says this, but somewhere it says basically "make links but write the article in such a way that readers can understand it without following them.—Politizer talk/contribs 15:41, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    • Date and length of the article verified, off-line ref accepted per WP:AGF, interesting hook. A recommendation to the nominator: the subject is almost 100 years old (will be 100 old in a little more than a month), so you may want to add some more recent references confirming that he is still alive. There are actually quite a few articles about him now in the Italian press, preparing to celebrate his 100's birthday (e.g. [2]), and it may be a good idea to add a few of them to the article. • Article length is more than ample and creation date is OK, but the only source for the plot summary (including the hook fact) is a link to a copy of the movie itself. --Orlady (talk) 17:58, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Almost all of the 4409-byte character count comes from an overly long and detailed plot summary that needs to be cut down. There is a tiny bit of info on production; the rest of the content is gone, I removed it because it was either a) unnecessary actor bios, or b) quotes from reviews. The article doesn't establish notability and the "press section" doesn't actually describe and summarize the response to and criticism of the film, it only lists links to other reviews. Finally, out of the three refs given, one is IMDB and one is the film itself. This article can't be passed without a lot of improvement. —Politizer talk/contribs 20:54, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Suggest moving/re-naming to "Monarchies in the Americas". --74.14.20.203 (talk) 15:40, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Someone's done so. I've updated things here. — BillC talk 02:01, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Article (and thus the hook) is confusing. It appears to me (from the article) that there are 12 countries in the Americas headed by monarchs (I would not have called these "monarchies," but I assume that someone has verified that the nomenclature is correct), of which 10 are headed by Queen Elizabeth II. Some parts of the article refer to the total of 12, but in other places the total is given as 10. If there are twelve monarchies, then the hook should say:

Manual of style suggests the number should be written as 10 and 12, not ten and twelve. – How do you turn this on (talk) 16:43, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I interpret MOS:NUM#Numbers as figures or words to say either is acceptable. "... numbers greater than nine are commonly rendered in numerals, or may be rendered in words ... " Art LaPella (talk) 21:19, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are no inline citations for these numbers, and reviewers (not to mention readers) should not be expected to have to count stuff like that. If the only verification available is the fact that there are 12 sources each calling some other country a monarchy, then that isn't really enough to claim that there are exactly 12 monarchies (it would only mean that there are at least 12 monarchies). —Politizer talk/contribs 20:25, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • is article is full of paintings by Sohan Qadri which Payaluttam uploaded with the same licenses. I suspect (1) the wrong licenses are used, or (2) this article is nicely decorated with blatant copyright violations, or (3) Sohan Qadri and Payaluttam are the same person, violating WP:AUTO. --74.14.20.203 (talk) 15:50, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • agree, this looks like either a major copyvio case or WP:AUTO or both. Wikipedia:Non-free content specifically says that non-free images of living people should not be used in articles about them and that fair use is not applicable to such images. The article contains a number of photographs of Sohan Qadri of questionable origin, for the years 1953, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1973. It seems rather unlikely that User:Payaluttam is the creator and copyright holder of these pictures, unless User:Payaluttam and Sohan Qadri are the same person. Either way, unsuitable for the going to the main page. Nsk92 (talk) 16:11, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Those seem like valid reasons not to take a chance on featuring the image on the Main Page. I will send a note to Payaluttam asking him to verify the copyright status of teh images. But, all that said, Payaluttam has put a tremendous effort into building what looks to me like a solid, well-sourced article about a pretty fascinating character. Someone else should decide since I nominated the article, but I'd say ding the picture but not the hook. The quote in the hook is cited to a mainstream art publication, and the person making the comment (F.N. Souza) is himself a very well-known and respected Indian artist.Cbl62 (talk) 02:06, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Payaluttam responded to my question on his talk page. He says he is writing the article for a New York gallery, Sundaramtagore. He states that the gallery does own the copyright on the images. While that may solve the copyright issue, it does suggest that the author has a financial interest in promoting Qadri's work. Even though I think the article is quite good, I think we probably ought not to feature it on the Main Page, as it may be construed as an advertisement for the author/gallery. Oh well. • Regarding the copyright issue, if the gallery indeed owns the copyrights to these photos, there is a specific process to follow. I am not an expert on our copyright plicy, but my understanding is that the gallery would either have to post a notice on its own website explicitly releasing the copyright to these photos or to contact WMF directly with this information. The licence files for the images would have to be modified too. Nsk92 (talk) 13:11, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fairuse pic Image:Sqportrait001.jpg is not free for use on DYK. Removed. --74.13.130.151 (talk) 20:04, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry, I am marking this one as DYKno. It is an interesting and well-written article, but there are significant COI and copyright problems that cannot be handled quickly here at DYK. In particular, I think that all the photos of Sohan Qadri used in the article are not in compliance with WP:NFC. I looked up their licences and the images say that the photos belong to Sohan Qadri himself and they essentially make a "fair use" claim. My understanding of WP:NFC is that "fair use" is not applicable here, since, among examples of non-acceptable uses of "fair use" claims for non-free pictures WP:NFC specifically lists: "Pictures of people still alive, groups still active, and buildings still standing; provided that taking a new free picture as a replacement (which is almost always considered possible) would serve the same encyclopedic purpose as the non-free image. This includes non-free promotional images." Maybe there is an expert on our copyright policies who can comment further, but I think that we are simply not equipped to deal with the copyright complications that arise here in the short time that we have to make a DYK decision. The article can still go through a good article review, where there is no pressing time limit, and where both COI and copyright problems can be addressed properly.
