A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

A bug in a user box?

I think I found and fixed a bug in one of the resolution userboxes. Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks, hydrox (talk) 18:58, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Quote: "UXGA is an abbreviation for Ultra eXtended Graphics Array referring to a standard monitor resolution of 1600×1200 pixels …" However, the userbox says (quote): "This user contributes at 1680×1050 resolution." But (quote): "WSXGA+ stands for Widescreen Super eXtended Graphics Array Plus and is a computer display standard. […] The resolution is 1680×1050 pixels (1,764,000 pixels) …" See it now? --hydrox (talk) 05:43, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Aisha: lede

Originaly at User talk:HelloAnnyong
As you said on Talk:Aisha that, "I'm not well versed on this subject", I'll try to give you an overview of the case, there are few personalities in early Islam who are little controversial, in general Sunnis have great veneration for them and Shi'is dispute their righteousness by pointing out their acts which are not taken so well by Sunni majority (although even their books are filled by such narrations e.g. Aisha's envolvement in events preceding to murder of third Caliph and then her as leader of Battle of Camel/Basra). Abu Bakar & his daughter Aisha, Umar & his daughter Hafsa, Uthman & his caln Bani Umayya are few of the contentious figures between the two parties. As most of the Sunni Jurispudence is based on the rulings of first three Caliphs and narrations of Hadith from Aisha their being not reghtious & being controversial is not taken well by Sunns and they try to label any such report as fringe, dubious & some time to extent of blasphemy. Ther have been riots and loss of life over these issues from start of Islamic days continuing till today (if you are aware of recent Kuwait & Bahrain fiasco against Shi'is).

Are Shi'a fringe?
Yes and no!
10–20% of the world's Muslims are Shi'a, they may number up to 200 million as of 2010. The Shi'a majority countries are Iran, Iraq, Azerbaijan and Bahrain. They constitute 36.3% of entire local population and 38.6% of local Muslim population of Middle East. Shi'a Muslims constitute over 35% of the population in Lebanon, over 45% of the population in Yemen, 20–40% of the population in Kuwait, over 20% in Turkey, 10–20% of the population in Pakistan, and 15–19% of Afghanistan's population. Nations with populations of more than one million Shi'as include (in descending order): Iran, Pakistan, India, Iraq, Turkey, Yemen, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Lebanon, and Tanzania.

Feel free to contact me in case of any question or clarifications.

Ha, thanks. That is a very succinct and neutral explanation of what appears to be an exceedingly difficult issue that has caused strife all over the world. More importantly, it reflects well upon you as an editor, and I hope that you stick around and continue to help out on that article. WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 2 - November 2010

English WikiProject News

After a missed issue, the WP:IND newsletter is back on track to being a regular bimonthly feature. The Indian WikiProject has seen plenty of online and off-line action, both in English as well as other Indian languages, and we now have a bigger, better format that intends to feature content and news from the English as well as other Indian language Wikipedias.

Reaching out to Indians has been the theme of the Indian Wikiproject over the past couple of months, aiming to involve a greater number of Indians in editing both the English and Indian language Wikipedias. To this end, efforts to set up the Indian chapter of Wikimedia have moved into their final stages, and registration of the society is currently pending. An effort is underway to push for "WikiMarathons" at meetups, where attendees will be encouraged to edit the English and/or Indian language Wikipedias. This is intended to popularise Wikipedia editing among the general public. In addition, a bot to post DYK's from the Indian Wikiproject to Twitter was created and launched by User:Logicwiki.

What's New?

Regrettably, the number of Featured Articles has dropped from 63 in June to 58 at the end of October 2010. Several FAs came up for review and were delisted, while Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India was saved. Meanwhile, Chalukya Dynasty appeared on the main page on July 9, 2010. Hearteningly, the number of Good Articles increased from 130 to 136 during the same period, while the number of Featured Lists remained constant at 16.

The source code for the Article Alert Bot is now available and the bot itself is expected to be up and running very shortly. This means that article alerts for the Indian Wikiproject will again be available, enabling editors to easily keep track of developments in respect of reviews, nominations, deletions etc.

The date change vandal mentioned briefly in the previous issue made a reappearance when the range block on his IP range expired in September. Consequently the block was extended till September 2011.

In October there was a heated discussion in the India project noticeboard regarding the copyright status of the Indian party symbols. The discussion was triggered by the deletion of Wiki San Roze's party symbol images by Hammersoft as copyright violations. No resolution was reached, partly because of our inability to explain to Hammersoft how election symbols in India differ from party logos. Comments are requested from anyone with a background in Indian copyright law to clarify this issue.

A tag has been placed on Criticism of Twelver Shi'ism, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

the article is original research, POV, in bad faith and soapbox. References given are non-verifiable and out of sync to the matter which they are tagged to.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. References & holidays

My "real life" is fairly busy from now until the end of the year so I won't be participating as extensively the next 4 weeks, but once the holidays are done I'm intent on improving the references throughout a series of related articles, including Muhammad, Ali, and Aisha. Any resources you have regarding those subjects would be a welcome contribution; in the meantime I'll do what I can to help in bits and pieces, especially on the talkpages. The Story of the Hungry Goat

You got a good chuckle out of me when I read your suggestion to call the lost verses by that name. However, some of the information actually seems worth including....the fact that Aisha was gathering the reports from people might belong in "After Muhammad's Death" section. As I told Aliwiki also, there is a lot of new material, so feel free to start a new section if you think something is overlooked. General Shi'a issues, ANI, etc.

No worries on the ANI. I was slightly miffed that it went to ANI without a post on my Talk, and more that I was being lumped in a guy doing some rather... "extreme" moves (Caliphate? really?). But I understand you meant well by it, no worries.

On a separate note, I have two folks now okay with Shi'a, so I'll stand by for more comment, and then make changes as needed, and if possible get it added to whatever "standardised spelling" list we have. Though probably just having the bulk of articles in one spelling is its own standardisation.

Before you do wander off though, it would be appreciated if you'd go to the Criticism article and weigh back in on the new version. I'm afraid that some of the "Delete" voters are POV pushing, and one seems well-intentioned but doesn't seem easily satisfiable. Having the original proposer weigh back in might be worth something. There is some real difference of opinion between Sunni and Shi'a, with the Sunni being awfully hostile about it at points, so I think it's really a topic worth covering.

Thanks for the comms, hope all going well. MatthewVanitas (talk) 05:16, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. This listing has come due for admin closure, and I have a question for you there. Hopefully, we'll be able to close out that matter soon. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:37, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think, this discussion is no more relevant, the article we are talking about has been deleted as per an Afd. --Sayed Mohammad Faiz Haidertcs 02:53, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thank you for your response, but there may be some confusion. The article is still present; the AfD has not yet closed. It was relisted by an administrator today and will not close for another five days at least. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:44, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Just to let you know, the confusion has been cleared up: the article was evidently undeleted before I saw your note and the AfD relisted for some reason. So, the article was gone, but it's back now. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:14, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

APPEAL TO YOU

However, Sonee is the writer of this book [Brahmand Pujan] written in 1999 . registered with Government of India- HRRD. Details of the registration is provided here on http://brhmaandpujanbook.tripod.com/ . More than sufficient, news and reviews are there on http://brhmaandpujan-news-reviews.tripod.com/ Since 5-6 yrs, for one or the other reason pages of [Naresh Sonee] & [Brahmand Pujan] are faced by communal bias from outside India so these articles over and again get deleted here in Wikipedia for minor reasons. However, many hits of - Naresh Sonee reflects on google search engine also. So, I request Wiki Indian community to kindly come forward and generously help these two pages to grow, as I am fed up to fight my case alone here [left] and moved out long back. Meanwhile, such an important info/issue on ‘Indian literature’ which adds & spell ‘new meaning /dimension’ to Brahman -should it stay lost else ignored? Your community panel has to judge at last. Myself, will not be on Wikipedia, for the same i apologise, but- pls. help these two pages to get reinstalled, reap, sow and grow, if you too feel so, I appeal to do this munificent favour. Merging Uttaranchal

Hi, you have repeatedly undone others' redirecting of Uttaranchal to Uttarakhand. Please discuss on Talk:Uttarakhand why you believe two separate articles should exist, since (as I've pointed out) we generally don't have multiple articles on multiple names of the same entity: e.g. Bombay redirects to Mumbai and Madras redirects to Chennai. The article in fact claimed that Uttaranchal was a "historic" region which was "disestablished" in 2007 — if you can find such a reference (all I can find is that the same state was renamed), I'd like to see it. When did Ghazi-ud-Din Haider become King of Awadh ?

Dear Faizader,

I noticed that in the additions you made on the wiki page concerning Ghazi-ud-Din Haider, you added the information that he ended being Nawab of Awadh and became King of Awadh on 19 October 1818. And yet in other books I have come across the year of the assumption of Kingship is given as 1819. Indeed in note 2 of the wiki article there is a link to a website where the date of the assumption of Kingship is given as 8 October 1819. Also in the text of the wiki article (written by someone else) the date is also given as 1819 with reference to Lord Cornwallis. I wonder therefore if the date of 1818 that you give can be right ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.14.223.210 (talk) 14:58, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

—Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.14.223.210 (talk) 15:18, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you read the article in detail & with attention, you'll find that date of 1818 is referenced while date of 1819 is unreferenced. Here are few references which mention date of 1819:

date of 1819 may be result of conversion of Hijri year 1234 into Gregorian year as in 1834 AH two CE years fell i.e. 1818 AD & 1819 AD. --Sayed Mohammad Faiz Haidertcs 18:54, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Faizhaider
Thank-you so very much for your reply. I have looked through the links more carefully, and I would like to suggest that perhaps the coronation may have taken place in 1819. In note 2 in the wikipedia entry on Ghazi-ud-Din Haider there is a link to a website called princely states of India, there immediately at the beginning we have the information "8 October 1819 The ruler takes the style of padshah (king) signaling formal independence". This I believe could be the correct date. BUT THEN lower down under "Kings" we find "19 October 1818 -19 October 1827" as the dates for the Kingship of Ghazi-ud-Din Haider, and I think the compiler of the website made an error here writting 19 October 1818 when he meant to say 8 October 1819, which would be consistent with the information that is given by him earlier. In a book, which I have in front of me, which discusses Awadh, called "India's Fabled City the Art of Courtly Lucknow" by Stephen Markel and Tushara Bindu Gude, 2010, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in the Bibliography there is the following: M.H. Fisher, "The Imperial Coronation of 1819: Awadh, the British and the Mughals" Modern Asian Studies, 19:2 (1985): 239-77. It would appear, then, that the coronation took place in 1819 and not 1818. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.14.223.210 (talk) 21:23, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Dear IPuser 86.14.223.210 (Sorry for IP address usage but I don't have anything else to address you e.g. name, etc),
Thanks for the reference, ""India's Fabled City the Art of Courtly Lucknow" by Stephen Markel and Tushara Bindu Gude, 2010, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in the Bibliography there is the following: M.H. Fisher, "The Imperial Coronation of 1819: Awadh, the British and the Mughals" Modern Asian Studies, 19:2 (1985): 239-77."
If you'll refer List of Nawabs of Awadh, there you will see "08 Oct 1819 - The ruler takes the style of padshah (king), signaling formal independence." mentioned. Now, I don't rememnber from where I got that piece of info as there is no ref provided there (I usually don't omit reference but some how I missed to provide one at that place).
It seems we need some research on the issue as there seems some confusion over the actual date. I myself have a history book History of Awadh specifically dealing with Nawabs of Awadh, although it is in Hindi but it can serve the purpose but I don't have that book with me at present and will get to lay hand on it once I visit my native place and hopefully I'll be there in two weeks time. Meanwhile you may pass any other reference info (it'll be better if its an web version as its easy to access and verify).
Thanks, again.--Sayed Mohammad Faiz Haidertcs 04:08, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Faizhaider,
Thank-you so much for your reply. When you give the link to the Wiki page List of Nawabs of Awadh, with the date of "8 October 1819 -The ruler takes the style of padshah (king), signaling formal independence", I think you will find your source was the website which is given in note 2 of the wikipage on Ghazi-ud-Din Haider. That same website ALSO then goes on to give WRONGLY the date of 27 October 1818 as the commencement of the Kingship of Ghazi-ud-Din Haider. sincerely JOHN —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.14.223.210 (talk) 11:30, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Dear John,
This may be the case (infact same phrasing of words indicate that it is the case), there is scarcity of online source over this matter and most of them are non-academic and contradictory in nature. At time we editors just forget rule of RS (i.e. Reliable third party sources which preferably should be academic in nature) in our quest for online info & references. --Sayed Mohammad Faiz Haidertcs 16:19, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

George Duncan Beechey was at Lucknow after Gazi-ud-Din Haider's death

Dear Faizhaider, I was just reading through the Wikipedia article on Ghazi-ud-Din Haider and I noticed an incongruity. Namely that the artist George Duncan Beechey was appointed as court artist by Ghazi-ud-Din Haider after 1828, and yet this king of Awadh died in 1827. So I googled "George Duncan Beechey" and came across "Portraits of the Nawabs Images from Lucknow Court 1775-1856" which is a google reprint of a magazine article, and there on note 8, I found the information that George Duncan Beeckey came to Lucknow in 1835 and stayed there till his death, which was in 1852. I am sorry I dont know how to put in a direct link here but if you just google "Portraits of the Nawabs" this should come up as first. sincerely 86.14.223.210 (talk) 22:32, 20 January 2011 (UTC) JOHN[reply]

Dear John,
That is quiet intresting point. Now I really need that History book which I mentioned but will have to wait till Feb 01, ten more days. Meanwhile you may get more startling things about Ghazi-ud-Din Haider's. BTW you can post web-link of google search you made regarding portrait (the address which appears while you are on first page of the search results). And you may pass other source info also. Why don't you make an account on wikipedia, then few things will become easy for you. Anyways, thanks for all the efforts you are putting up and including me in it.--Sayed Mohammad Faiz Haidertcs 01:46, 21 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Additions of name to List of Ayatollahs

Hi, recently you have aded few names to India section of List of Ayatollahs. All of this GAs added by you are related to Jamiul-Uloom Jawadia i.e. Madarsa-e-Jawwadia of Benares. Can you provide any reference which lists these people as Grand-Ayatollah/Ayatolla/Mujtahids/Faqih/Aalim/Allamah/etc.because I have been trying to find any reference for this since few years. basically I was searching a refernce (basically online one) for Zangipuri branch of ulemas, specially for Moulvi Jawwad & Dawood but was unable to find any RS for this. It seems you have access to some book or other hard source which mentions their name. Or is it by your personal knowledge that you have added their name? In any case I'll be happy to hear from you, expecting a response. --Sayed Mohammad Faiz Haidertcs 06:48, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
